A Complete Guide on Feeding Puppies - When, How & What
Welcoming a new puppy home is the biggest joy one could ever experience. In those initial months, your pup requires a balanced diet to fuel their speedy growth and to ensure they live a long, healthy and memorable life. As per AAFCO recommendations, your pup’s diet must have at least 22% protein, 8% fat, adequate carbohydrates, essential fatty acids with mineral and vitamin fortification. Puppy food is absolutely essential for the first year of your pup’s development as it sets the basis for their overall health and nutrition for the rest of their life. Not to mention, the growth deformities and deficiency disorders, if you fail to provide the right nutrition. Hence, getting the nutritional balance exactly right with just homemade food becomes an overwhelming process for any new doggo owner. But the good news is, we have done the research for you and with our selection of puppy dry food online, wet food, treats & more, you will find one that meets the needs of your growing pupper and your budget.
As a new or potential pet parent, you probably have these questions in mind; How often to feed my puppy? How much quantity? And most importantly WHAT to feed my perpetually hungry pup? We’ll break down each of these questions for you, so read on.
How often should I feed my puppy?
Your pup’s feeding schedule will undergo quite a few updates in the first year. Owing to their fast development and tiny gut size, your pup will start off with 5 meals spaced out in a day before the age of 2 months. Your pup will soon graduate to 4 meals a day till 3 months of age transitioning to 3 meals a day after the age of 3 months. From six months onwards upto almost a year, you can move your puppy’s feeding times down to two a day. Feeding your pet at the same time every day helps them set into a routine. Your pup may start showing signs of feeling hungry during those times and not hungry during hours you fed them earlier.
AGE FEEDING FREQUENCY
Up to 2 months 5 times a day
2-3 months 4 times a day
3-6 months 3 times a day
6 months onwards 3 times a day
How much to feed my puppy?
Its best to feed them smaller, more frequent meals. Puppy food is formulated to provide a certain amount of nutrients per amount of food. Due to the rapid phases of growth puppies experience, they require food which has higher energy-density than an adult dog along with a larger volume of food than their adult counterparts. As they grow up, their feeding quantity gradually decreases with age. Surprising, right? Think of it as feeding for the future, rather than the size they are today.
How much food a puppy should eat is a question with a lot of variables, the biggest being the breed.” Different breeds have different daily caloric requirements due to differences in metabolism and level of activity. Furthermore, the puppy’s weight plays a major role in portion control. As a thumb rule, a puppy should be fed at the rate of 15 grams of feed per kg body weight of the pup in each meal.
Say your 3-month old doggo weighs 3 kgs.
So, one meal will comprise 15 X 3= 45 grams of food.
As the frequency of feeding for this age category is 3 times a day, the total allowance for the day will amount to 45 X 3= 135 grams. You can dodge this math simply by following the feeding table on the back of the bag of dog food.
Word of caution here, DO NOT let those puppy dog eyes trip you into giving them more food than what is advised.
What should I feed my puppy?
Puppies are likely to eat whatever is found under their nose! As the parent, you need to decide the right pet foods. With countless years of research and dollars spent on perfecting the best formulation for your furry companion, they are the best bet for your pup. Your pup’s unique nutritional requirement will depend on its size, breed and age. Puppies of small sized breeds can reach their full adult size at about nine to ten months of age. While the large breed puppy can take anywhere from fifteen to twenty-four months. There’s no “one-size-fits-all diet” that could possibly cover all the needs of all the puppies in the world. Additionally, puppy food comes in a variety of types such as dry kibble, wet food, raw, freshly made and treats.
With so many tasty and healthy food options for pups, it’s definitely a good idea for pet parents to invest time in understanding the important ones.
Dry food
Dry food is a popular option for many pet parents owing to the convenience and ease along with acceptability in vegetarian households too. By the time puppies are six weeks old, they will start weaning off their mothers onto a mixture of puppy cereal and a specially formulated puppy food. The type of dry food you choose for your puppy will further depend upon the age and breed of your puppy. So, to provide a more specific nutrition, the dog food is categorised according to breed size into Mini, Medium, Maxi and Giant breed food.
FOOD CATEGORY: BREEDS INCLUDED
Mini/ Small (Adult weight below 10 kgs) : Shih-Tzu, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle, Miniature Pinscher, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua
Medium (Adult weight : 10-24 kgs): Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Poodle, Basset Hound, Dalmatian, Bulldog, Standard Schnauzer, Chow Chow
Maxi (Adult weight : 25-50 kgs): Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Boxer, Akita, Siberian Husky
Giant (Adult weight over 50 kgs): Saint Bernard, Bullmastiff, Great Dane, Rottweiler
So after figuring out the category in which your pup belongs according to their breed, find the food appropriate for his age within that category.
Each breed category has a starter, puppy and adult food which changes with your puppy's age. Starter food is an energy dense feed which supports the rapid growth of pups without disturbing their digestive system which is at an immature stage. Kibbles easily rehydrate to a consistency that is porridge-like which is very palatable for weaning puppies. Puppy food further facilitates proper growth and helps avoid excess weight gain thanks to an adapted energy content. Skeletal development is the hallmark of this growth period; hence an appropriate puppy food provides the right nutritional balance of calcium and phosphorus in their diet. Adult food is a tailored diet to maintain a healthy body conformation throughout the dog’s life.
Starter food: (Age group- Up to 2 months)
Till 2 months of age, gradually transition your pup from mother’s milk or the feed the breeder was giving to a category of dry food known as starter food. It has a combination of nutritional elements present in mother’s milk that actively promote digestive health and help maintain the puppy’s natural defences. This food facilitates an easy transition from mother's milk to solid food. If your puppy is struggling to eat dry food, you can try mixing it with a little warm water to make it softer, until their teeth get stronger.
Puppy Dry food: (Age group: 2-10 months (small breed) , 2-15 months (large breed))
Most commercial puppy dry foods have a range for puppy stage which applies for small breed pups till the age of 10 months and large breed pups till the age of 15 months. This food has excellent sources of protein namely chicken, lamb, fish and turkey which is extremely essential for proper growth. It is rich in calories from protein and fat sources. Crunchy dry kibble has an add-on advantage of keeping your dog's teeth healthy by reducing plaque and tartar build-up. Which is why kibble eaters generally have way better breath!
Adult food: (Age group: After 10 months (small breeds), after 16 months (large breed))
While puppy dry food has many of the same ingredients as adult dry dog food, puppy meals tend to have higher concentrations of essential nutrients. This is because puppies have different requirements as compared to older dogs; just as human babies have different diets from adult humans. So, they’ll need fewer of the resources in their food to contribute to growth, but need more to support maintenance. They are enriched with probiotics, vitamins, essential fatty acids to support digestive and joint health, maintain skin barrier and manage an ideal weight.
The best time to change from puppy dry food to adult dry food depends on their breed, but most dogs are ready to change foods between 12-24 months of age.
Make the change gradually: Irrespective of your dog’s age, any form of food transition with dogs must be done gradually. Start by mixing a little of the next stage food (10-15%) with the previous stage food. If your puppy shows no unusual signs and tolerates it, (translation: no intestinal disturbances), you can double the amount of new food the next day. It should usually take about a week to make the full transition.
(P.S.- make sure there is plenty of fresh water available for your pup)
Pet parents usually have their hands full with their pup’s feeding schedule, potty training and teething that they often miss out on their most basic necessity; WATER. Every single bodily function from digestion to brain development, requires water. All efforts put into providing the best possible nutrition will turn to dust, if your pup is in a dehydrated state. Therefore, it’s very important to keep your pooch well hydrated at all times so they function at the peak of their capacity and avoid any health issues that could creep up due to dehydration. As a thumb rule, puppies must have direct access to at least one-half cup of water every two hours or so. Each time you reach for your own water bottle, think of your pet’s water needs, too.
Wet Food
Whilst dry food mainly brings advantages for the owner in terms of price, cleanliness and convenience, the advantages of wet food benefit the dog itself. Most doggos would probably opt for wet food if they could choose themselves, since wet food, more intense in smell and taste, simply tastes better to them. It is ideal for fussy eaters or pets with illnesses. With grain free and chicken free options, wet food is one of the best options for dogs with food allergies. Wet puppy food also offers your dog more hydration. Wet food becomes an important source of hydration in dogs that are hyperactive and don’t drink a lot of water themselves.
Both dry and wet food have their fans, so most pet parents provide the best of both worlds by feeding a mix of the two or simply using wet food as a topper for dry food. But remember, it is the content that matters, not the variety. So, focus on a food that best supports their growth and development and helps them thrive.
Treats
These titbits not only serve as a pat on the back for when your puppy does something good, but can also be used for mental stimulation, dental care, teething and supplementation.
It should be noted that even the healthiest dog treats can never replace a balanced diet in a dog’s life. Treats should be seen as enjoyable supplements to a dog’s daily diet.
Foods your dog should never eat
It sure is difficult to resist those big brown eyes and that adorable face. But remember before giving them a little reward off your table, that certain human foods are downright dangerous for your bundle of fluff. Due to differences in body composition, digestive enzymes and physiology of the body, some foods can upset your pup’s digestive system and send them straight to the emergency vet.
Avocados, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, almonds, chocolate, coffee and tea are certain foods that are perfectly suitable for human consumption but are TOXIC for your dog, posing a serious threat to their health and well-being. Dairy products can cause dysbiosis in certain dogs further leading to diarrhoea as well as food allergies. The bones in meat, chicken and fish can be hazardous too. They can splinter and stick in the throat, break teeth or cut the intestines. Candy, gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet foods which are sweetened with xylitol are also extremely dangerous. Also, accidental consumption of alcohol, tobacco or marijuana can be lethal. So, keep these foods out of your dog’s reach and contact your vet ASAP if they do consume any of these!
A human takes 18 years to fully grow and reach adulthood. Whereas your pooch has to cover this 18 year worth growth in mere 12-24 months. This only emphasises the need for proper nutrition in puppyhood. Proper research and a consultation with a vet will help you map out the best combination of dry, wet, homemade food and treats to ensure good health for your pupper who is just starting out in life.

WHY you shouldn’t feed these 10 foods to your dog
Dogs might think they’re human, but their physiology is not like ours. Humans might eat a wide variety of foods with little concern, but there are some very common human foods which you should not feed to your canine companion. You’ve probably seen the foods on this list before, but this is WHY these foods should not be fed to dogs.
Chocolate, Theobromine and Caffeine:
Everybody’s heard that chocolate is bad for dogs, and it’s true. Chocolate contains a compound called Theobromine. Theobromine is a type of compound called a methylxanthine, and another methylxanthine you might be more familiar with is caffeine. We know quite a lot about these compounds, as humans use them both medicinally and recreationally. The long version is that they all inhibit phosphodiesterase and antagonise adenosine receptors. The short version is that they increase muscle activity, including the heart, and stimulate the central nervous system.
This presents as dogs that have fast and irregular heart rates, high body temperatures and increased muscle activity that can progress to seizures.
It takes a reasonable amount of chocolate to poison a dog. One M&M isn’t going to do it. For a 35kg dog it’s going to take at least 3500mg of theobromine, which is about 5kg of typical milk chocolate. But only 1.2kg of dark chocolate or 600g of cooking chocolate, which is possible.
A 10kg dog needs much less. 1.5kg of milk chocolate would do it, which is only about 3 large Easter Bunnies, or 300g of dark chocolate, which is one packet from the cooking isle.
Chocolate is super tasty, dogs will absolutely gorge themselves on all chocolate available, so it’s not too difficult to poison smaller dogs with it.
And even if you get the dog through the toxicity, the high fat content of chocolate can go on to cause other gastrointestinal problems.
Onions & Garlic:
Yes, I said onions AND garlic. All allium species contain the same potentially toxic compounds, whether raw or cooked. That goes for spring onions too, it’s just really difficult to convince a dog to eat enough of them to be poisoned. These plants cause a Heinz body anaemia by inducing oxidative damage to the surface of the red blood cells, and for some reason breeds of Japanese origin like the Akita and Shiba Inu seem particularly prone to this toxicity.
It usually takes 10 to 15g per kg of body weight to poison a dog, but those breeds can be affected by as little as 5g per kilo. So for a big, 35kg dog, that’s about three medium sized onions.
Poisoning can happen all in one go, or it can happen by eating small amounts over a longer period of time, which is why it’s infuriating to see garlic being suggested as a natural remedy for things.
Bad cases will have to be treated with a blood transfusion as there is no direct antidote. And for interest, there are other things that can cause Heinz body anaemia too, like zinc.
Macadamia nuts:
You know how everything in Australia has a reputation for being deadly? Well the Macadamia is the one native Australian plant that has successfully become a mainstream agricultural crop. And it’s poisonous to dogs. Legitimately, for some weird reason Macadamia nuts cause progressive paralysis in dogs. We don’t know what the active toxin is, but we do know it’s present in both raw and cooked nuts, and as little as 5 nuts can cause paralysis in a 20kg dog. Sometimes the dogs develop vomiting and joint swelling in addition to paralysis, but most recover well with supportive treatment.
Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas:
This is another weird toxin when it comes to dogs, and it’s especially weird in that we don’t know what the toxic compound actually is. Grapes, raisins, sultanas and foods that contain them can cause idiosyncratic (unpredictable) reactions which result in kidney failure by ischaemic injury (lack of blood flow). It’s completely unpredictable which dogs will develop the reaction, and it’s independent of dose with as little at 10 grapes causing the toxicity.
In addition to being unpredictable, you really don’t want to mess around with it. Grape toxicity when it happens has approximately a 50% mortality rate.
Yeast dough:
A dog can absolutely eat cooked bread, but raw dough with yeast in it to make it rise presents some interesting problems. First is that the fermenting yeast produces ethanol, which can be toxic on its own. Second is that the yeast can and will continue to ferment inside the dog’s stomach where it’s nice and warm. This produces more ethanol, but can also cause bloating and the sticky dough is very difficult to remove by vomiting.
Chewing gum and Xylitol:
Xylitol is a sugar substitute used in many ‘sugar free’ products, of which chewing gum is the most common, but more and more foods contain it these days. It’s found naturally in many plants such as berries, but ingesting a large amount of it, about 75mg per kg, will cause profound hypoglycemia. Larger doses can also cause liver failure, and it’s only about 50:50 whether treated dogs will survive that. Dogs with hypoglycemia can look drunk with symptoms like vomiting and difficulty walking.
For a 35kg dog, 10 to 15 pieces of sugar free gum could cause this toxicity, and they will happily eat the entire packet if given the chance.
Alcohol (ethanol):
While humans indulge in this recreational plant toxin, we have spent a considerable amount of our history adapting to its use and some human populations have evolved a higher tolerance than others. Dogs have not done this, but they will consume it either in alcoholic beverages that humans give them for a laugh, or by consuming rotting fruit that’s fallen off trees. Yeast dough can contain it too.
Signs are more or less what you would expect for a drunk dog - sleepy and wobbly, but can progress to low body temperature, metabolic acidosis and some will stop breathing.
The median lethal dose of alcohol for a dog is about 1 standard drink for 2kg of body weight, orally. That’s an average, but some dogs will be more severely affected than others, and complications can still occur at lower doses.
And remember, wine is made from grapes, which can and will cause unpredictable kidney failure, so that’s an extra No.
Stone Fruit:
The flesh of fruits like apricots, peaches and cherries are fine to feed in moderation, but it’s the large seed inside the fruit that causes most of the problems. These seeds do contain cyanide if cracked open, but the more common problem we see is not a toxicity, but gastrointestinal obstruction.
Some of these seeds are small enough to swallow, but large enough to cause a blockage either at the pylorus, where the stomach empties into the intestine, or in the small intestine itself. This will obviously vary with the size of the pip and the size of the dog. A cherry pit isn’t going to cause much drama, and a large dog like a labrador might poop out a series of peach pips, but a small dog like a terrier may not be so lucky.
Avocado:
Avocados deserve a special mention because not only are they a stone fruit with a large stone that would cause an obstruction in most dogs if eaten, the flesh of the fruit also contains a toxin caused persin. Persin is very toxic to some species of birds and herbivores and will cause inflammation, swelling and cardiac arrhythmias. In dogs, it would be unlikely to see more than vomiting from this toxin. However, avocado is also relatively high in fat for a fruit, and fatty foods are also not ideal to feed most dogs and cats.
Fatty Foods:
The most common reason for me to see gastroenteritis in the vet clinic is a dog eating too much fatty food, but it will also potentially cause pancreatitis and that’s even more of a concern. We can tolerate dogs with some diarrhoea or a single vomit after eating something unusual - even humans do that sometimes - but pancreatitis will cause significant pain as well as nausea, and can progress to sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, diabetes or death.
Dogs vary in terms of how much fat they can handle in their diet, with some being much more sensitive than others, and this sensitivity usually increases with age. For most dogs, moderation is the key, not gorging on fatty scraps that the humans didn’t want to eat or barbeque leftovers.
So now you know why these foods aren’t recommended for dogs. We’re not just saying it for no reason, even for the unexpected ones like grapes and macadamias.

Obviously no pressure, but if you wanted to share your ideas on house pets, there would be great interest from at least one person. But headcanons are closed and I totally respect that (this very ask aside sorry). No pressure to do anything!!! just wanted to let you know that it seems like fun info.
Sans (Undertale): Strongly inspired by a fantastic fanfiction I can’t recommend enough, he has a cat affectionately named Catsup (Norwegian Forest Cat). Of course he does. Pretty typical story here, he more or less went to a shelter, locked onto the biggest, fattest cat there, and filled out the paperwork to damn her to a life of having a pun for a name. He...may have only gone to the shelter because he was hardcore struggling with depression and his brother read somewhere that pets can help a little, but that's...that’s neither here nor there. Catsup turned out to be a perfect fit for Sans in spite of his initial attitude of, 'I'm only doing this to make Papyrus happy'-- she's probably just about as chill and lazy as the skeleton himself, content to flop over just about anywhere, anytime and hang out. Her laidback nature was a blessing for Sans, a first-time cat-owner who didn't really know what he was doing or what she needed right away. A more high-maintenance cat probably wouldn't have been as forgiving and there'd have been a lot more stress on everybody before he got it figured out. Now, he considers Catsup his best little pal and doesn't even need to be reminded to change out her bowls and her litter. He's surprisingly responsible, when he actually really cares about something.
Catsup’s Quirks: Likes it when you gently slap her belly, always gravitates towards the room with the most people in it, often appears in unusual places that it seems like she shouldn't have been able to get to
Papyrus (Undertale): He...begrudgingly missed working with the Canine Unit once the Royal Guard was officially disbanded... It took him awhile to be able to openly admit he was interested in getting a dog, and when he did, he had standards-- it had to be a smart dog, one that could learn tricks and follow rules, unlike a certain annoying creature that’s plagued his life and home and special attacks in the past!!! So he did a lot of breed research, found a local, ethical breeder for the kind he was looking for, and went to pick out a pup. Spike (Border Collie), so named for his incredible coolness, is a perfect fit for his energetic skeleton friend and loves to run, exercise, and learn new tricks all the time!
Spike’s Quirks: Learned to wipe his feet before coming inside just by watching Papyrus do it, hams up his tricks and sometimes does them without prompting, never leaves the park without an impractically large stick to bring home
Sky (Underswap Sans): You will literally never get him to admit the real reason he got a dog companion because he knows in his heart of hearts that it’s such a silly reason... He saw a video online of a dog delicately eating a watermelon and while most people would’ve had a kneejerk reaction of, “I NEED TEN,” but not gotten any, he had the same reaction and just...talked himself down to one. And so came Poff (Samoyed), a big ol’ floofer who’s a lot like her master when it comes to levels of energy and affection. She’s happy to follow him around on patrols, training sessions, and even through obstacle course...so of course, she tends to get very dirty very quickly. Luckily, Sky’s diligence in grooming her keeps her coat as white and fluffy as her namesake!
Poff’s Quirks: Loves baths, tap dances at the mention of treats, doesn't chew her toys and just hoards them instead
Paps (Underswap Papyrus): He wasn’t really in the market for a dog, himself. He was just along for the ride when his bro was picking up Poff, when he happened to hear the most hilarious sing-screaming sound he’d ever heard in his life. He followed it all the way to the little fellow who would soon be known as Smoochie (French Bulldog), and he sure seemed upset about...something? He never really figured out why, he was laughing too hard from hearing a sound like that come out of something so small and weird-looking. He didn't try to adopt Smoochie that day, much as he loved his sound, but he found himself going back to the shelter a couple times just to check on and play with him. After two or three months with no one else adopting the little prima-donna, he figured he might as well commit and take him home. He's a fun little dude and Paps hasn't regretted it for a second, but he's forever in denial about just how much of a Dog Dad he's become since. It's totally normal to carry your dog around in the hood of your sweatshirt, isn't it???
Smoochie’s Quirks: Screams a lot, will eat food out of peoples’ hands if they’re not paying attention, jumps higher than it seems like he should be able to
Jasper (Underfell Sans): Like most things in his life, he didn’t put a whole lot of planning or forethought into getting a dog. He was out one night, decently drunk, and a friend of a friend of a friend of a coworker was talking about this dumb dog he had that was supposed to be a guard dog but couldn't do it worth a damn because he was too friendly. The guy was yammering about how to get rid of it and something about that struck a chord with Jasper. It was pretty soon after monsters surfaced and maybe that's why it felt...important to him? He was probably just drunk and emotional and soft that he even stepped in or said anything, but it is what it is. He’s a skilled enough conman that it didn't take him long to talk the guy around in circles until he was willing to pay Jasper for the privilege of taking this animal off his hands and in short order, he was almost bowled over by the big dog that planted its paws on his shoulders at their first meeting. Jasper immediately renamed him from something cliché and 'intimidating' to Tubbs (Rottweiler) for how heavy the goofy bastard was and then brought him right home. His brother wasn't particularly pleased and swore he would not be caring for this beast, but he never had to; Jasper kinda missed having something trusting and affectionate to take care of, and Tubbs has been daddy's little fatty ever since.
Tubbs’ Quirks: Shreds even the heaviest duty toys, lays on people as if he were a lap dog, drools rivers if somebody's eating food around him
Pyre (Underfell Papyrus): Who am I to defy literal years of fanon...? His first meeting with Doomfanger (Persian) was about as clichéd as it gets-- a scrawny, dingy, scraggly and matted cat scurrying out of an alley in the rain. She went right up to him and, well... it was love at first mew. He scooped her right up, bestowed a fittingly intimidating name upon her, and took her home with him, in spite of the fact that she looked more like a mutant rat than a cat at the time. After shaving the mats off, bathing the dirt away, and getting her some regular food, though, Doomy actually ends up being an exceedingly beautiful feline! He credits his attentive care and grooming for her pristine, silvery fluff and will brag about it at a moment's notice, but he's just ever so slightly in denial about her sweet and gentle nature. Doomfanger is a vicious killing machine, a true apex predator that nothing stands a chance against! That's...that’s obviously why he carries her around so much... And why he plucks her away from any other animal that comes near her like some sort of mother hen-- he's minimizing the bloodshed! If he let her loose, there would be no survivors!
Doomfanger’s Quirks: Meows in peeps, avid shadow-chaser, extremely receptive to handling
Mal (Swapfell Sans): Hey, anyone remember FGTC? This one cameo’d in that fic, she may seem familiar~ So...he wanted a pet. At first, he thought a cat would be good, fierce independent hunters that they’re reputed to be...but after spending time with a lot of cats and not really clicking with any, he was forced to concede that he was just more of a dog person. In hindsight, of course that’s what he was looking for: a loyal companion to (literally, ha!) dog his steps and follow his orders. Before he can actually, intentionally start looking for one, though, the universe works its magic and he finds one digging around in the garbage out behind the house. The emergency vet he brings the scarred and skeletal stray to tells him that, judging by her injuries, she was probably bait in some dog-fighting ring somewhere and got thrown away when she wasn’t useful anymore. Well. Fuck that, Princess (Pitbull) deserves better than that, and she’ll have it! He takes on the duty of nursing her back to health and earning her trust and it isn’t long before she shows her true colors as the loviest sweetheart of a dog that ever was. She’s utterly useless as an attack/guard dog, but her barks are loud and intimidating, and she obeys commands at the drop of a hat, so Mal doesn’t hold that against her. She goes with him just about anywhere she’s allowed and he shows her off with the same enthusiasm you’d expect for a pedigreed Best in Show dog.
Princess’ Quirks: Wags with her entire butt, will kiss the moment someone’s face is in range, barks at doorbells both real and on TV
Rus (Swapfell Papyrus): He didn’t mean to get a cat, not really... He was just following along with his brother when Mal was kicking around the idea of getting one, and Mal may not have clicked with anybody there, but he sure did. Actually... Kitkat (Manx) may have picked him and he’s just along for the ride. Kitkat was kinda young at the time, a little smaller than all the rest and also...no tail??? But what a personality, loud and playful and super sweet and...when it was time to leave the shelter, he just...he couldn’t bring himself to do it without her, he was in love! It’s mutual, at least-- she latched right onto him pretty much instantly and is pretty much never not with him whenever he’s at home, following him around from room-to-room.
Kitkat’s Quirks: Bone-rattlingly loud purrs, loves to play fetch, prone to 3AM zest for life and zooming all around the house accordingly
Slate (Horrortale Sans): I actually wrote about this one! But the gist of it is...he likes cats. Eventually got confident enough to go get one and zeroed right in on the weirdest-looking, least adoptable cat in the shelter he volunteers at. Slinky (Cornish Rex) was deaf, kinda ugly, and a whole lotta weird, but hell, she’ll fit right in at home, yeah? And so she does! She wrecks a lotta shit and is loud as hell, but stuff is only stuff and Slate’s never had an issue with noise. Actually...she really helps him out with his sleep and focus issues, it’s hard to drop off or dissociate when you have a cat in your lap, yelling at you at batting your face because it’s Play Time or Dinner Time, wake the fuck up!!! She’s a bastardous gremlin, but he loves her to bits.
Slinky’s Quirks: Clumsy and bad at judging distances, loves ankle-looping, insists on sniffing all people-food but never actually tries to eat it
Papy (Horrortale Papyrus): Following the trauma of the underground and the ensuing massive outpouring of empathy from humanity at large, monsters were made aware of many therapeutic resources that they could take advantage of, one of which was therapy animals. Papy naturally thought this was a wonderful idea...for other monsters, who were of course far more psychologically-damaged and not quite so good at enduring as himself. But...his brother does volunteer at an animal shelter, and he goes to visit him on occasion so he's made friends with a lot of animal people. This is how he hears about a therapy dog in need of a new forever-home due to complicated circumstances with her former owner, and well... it would be rude not to offer the Lady (Borzoi) a place to stay! He’s surprised by her appearance at first, having expected something more like a golden retriever or some kind of shepherd??? But he's very quickly charmed by her and actually feels more than a little bit of kinship with her no stranger to being long and oddly proportioned, himself-- and they're both doing their best to make it look graceful instead of weird. Since Lady proves to be a sweet and gentle-mannered dog, Papy just sort of...never bothers trying to find other accommodations for her. She’s welcomed wholeheartedly into their home, which she repays with plenty of unconditional love and effortless emotional support!
Lady’s Quirks: Spins in circles when excited, very polite when begging for table scraps, never barks but howls often

Chapter 1: Hamachi
Chapter 1: Alonso
I was coming off one of the worst weeks of my career. My former boss, whom I knew only as Takuto and for whom I’d worked for about six days, was stabbed in more than two places on his torso, and once in the neck region. I found him splayed out like a starfish on the sidewalk down a side street with no street sign. There was a distant sound of running through puddles, and I swear I heard a muted trumpet echoing off the brick apartment buildings somewhere down the block.
As a bodyguard, finding your boss in a pool of his own blood, is generally hailed as the end of your shift.
It was rough. I always thought of myself as a natural guarder of bodies. I get very attached to bodies, whatever type they may be, and if I’m assigned to guard one, well, that protectiveness comes out and I get very difficult to peel off.
I tried not to fault myself too much. I didn’t have much time to get to know Takuto, it being a truncated work week and he living high on the untrusting meter. I gleaned through my investigatory talents and the brief synopsis from Alonso, that Takuto was a chef at a restaurant, probably a Japanese restaurant. I heard words like chirashi and P&L on more than one eavesdrop. Apparently in this particular field of work, this kind of thing happens. People in high places, especially ones in the high-stakes food and beverage community, often get violently replaced. Something about the number of knives at hand, the ambient heat of any given kitchen, the stress of maintaining fish at the right temperature.
That kind of thing did not deter me. Violence comes with the job. Why would someone hire a body guard if their body wasn’t in some kind of perpetual state of risk. It kind of goes without saying.
In the short time I knew Takuto, I hadn’t been given much insight into who his enemies were, what kinds of valuable assets he possessed, any of that sweet detail that might make my job easier. I got the impression that Takuto didn’t know either. He seemed like a man who hadn’t quite found his footing in his new job, an apprentice turned chef turned sushi-alderman in a manner of hours. He seemed like the kind of many who needed some thorough body-guarding, but without that information, the job was nothing more than looking scarier and more aware than you really are.
You’d have to ask Alonso personally if you want to know why he hired me. God knows he wouldn’t explain it to me. He simply said, “I know talent when I see it.” I was in the middle of a také course, miso soup included. I had become a big fan of sushi. I found the formality of the dining experience balanced me out. The beauty and grace of every aspect was a welcome vacation from my normal life. Plus such fish were high fatty oils. Perhaps you’ve gathered by now, perhaps you haven’t, but I promise, if you were to pass me on the street, you’d bet your life that I’m the kind of guy that likes his fatty oils. You might even say I look like a guy who deals exclusively in fatty oils. They’ve always held a special place in my heart. Maybe that’s why I was hired.
This was 1996, in case you couldn’t tell. Sushi was still an elusive cuisine in America at this point in history. The country hadn’t rediscovered its craft culture quite yet — the nineties had us all in a climactic frenzy whose origins dated to the fifties, probably earlier, but definitely at least the fifties. The factory processed food system had triumphed over its communist cousins, whose food system was undoubtedly just as factory-based but was somehow different, I’m not sure. Either way, we won, and in celebration we pumped our money into deep fried hot dogs and bloomin’ onions and all-you-can eateries and tuna melts. Not to say I have anything against those particular items. In fact, I choose them because they more or less define me as a consumer.
Sushi was just one of those things that flew under the radar. No one really trusted raw fish, they didn’t rate rice quite as high as bread and pasta, and wasabi was feared for its potency. It just so happened that a sushi bar opened up right across the street from my apartment. Me being the type that needed extended breaks from Dexter, presently my only companion and also my cat, I had the habit of trying any restaurant or bar I could find.
I was only one of a handful of people who frequented this establishment, whose sign simple read, in dull red lettering, Fishy Smell. Nor was it the best neighborhood for such a restaurant. People of that ilk, my neighbors at the time, didn’t have my unique brand of open-mindedness. It was almost as if they were attempting to deter people from eating there.
Still the sushi was good. The chef clearly took his job very seriously and treated me with respect. I did get the overall impression that they were somewhat nervous about opening a restaurant in that location. Whether it was the crime, the degenerates, the filth on the streets and sidewalks, the noise from the fire-escapes and roofs where in the heat of summer the chronically claustrophobic congregate, and how all this would influence the delicate nature of their fish, or something else, a concern uniquely Japanese, a concern about culture and its export. I won’t brag but I did some research after my third or so meal in Fishy Smell and it turns out for most of history the Japanese were not particularly inclined towards cultural imports or exports. Such a recent and drastic reversal, I suspected, might cause a few of their more traditional citizens some mild anxiety.
While the rest of the country remained in their comfy, all-American reveries, the elusive world of the sushi magnates began to form before my very eyes. Perhaps America was right to dabble in a California roll once a year, perhaps at a holiday party, and leave it at that. Perhaps they sensed that the sushi underworld was still afoot, and that stepping into an authentic sushi restaurant, and I believe I’m quoting Newsweek here, was one of the most dangerous things you could do in 1996.
As I was saying, I was in the middle of my také course, I think on my mackerel (one of my favorites re: fatty oils), getting eyed in a characteristically cryptic manner by the chef, when a well-dressed fellow walked through the doors. He was a regular, always sat in the end seat at the bar, far on the other end away from the door, and who always had a different guest with him. The chef greeted him with deference, seemed to serve him with a particular air of fear, as if at the slightest moment of disappointment, he guest could put down his chopsticks, walk outside, and shutter the restaurant, closing it forever and suffocating the staff and public unfortunate enough to be trapped inside.
So that night, as I was sitting alone at the bar, drinking a beer and reading a book on mythology, a topic to which I returned rather frequently, eyeing my mackerel, best for last. The bar was empty — it was near closing time, and it was raining outside. At about 9:30, just as I was about to pop that little nigiri in my mouth, the door opened and the regular, the fellow, enters the restaurant, then locks the door from the inside.
I sat up. My antennae told me to. I do sometimes find myself trapped in places, but never like this. The chef and waitress disappeared. The man approached me, all smiles. In New York, this is a definite sign of danger. “Hi,” he said, his voice deep and velvety. “I’m Alonso. I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time.”
I made a face that said, sure, what else am I doing. Alonso took the stool next to me and began talking. didn’t have to say much to get the idea across. He had people who needed bodily protection, which was precisely the kind of protection I offered. I didn’t really care at that time of my life who I guarded, what they did for a living, the kind of people they tended to anger to a point of needed protection. That kind of information couldn’t really be trusted coming from well-dressed sushi bar patrons anyway.
“So what do you think,” he said after his spiel.
“You’d be surprised how many people in New York have offered me per-diem jobs as their goon or thug or even a pair of legs, a pair of shoulders, an extra set of eyes, a quick change of clothes. It sounds like you’re just looking generally for an all around frightening kind of presence in any given situation.”
“You catch on quick.”
“With nine millions people running around with their own agendas, sometimes people need reminding that their own agenda’s don’t align with other more powerful agendas. Guys like me tend to fill that job role well.”
The conversation went on. Alonso liked to talk. He liked to get you to see things from his side of the story. But since this is my side of the story I’ve decided I won’t give him any more space. If I do, we’ll be here all night. Suffice it to say, I was interested in money at the time and didn’t have a lot of use for myself other than precisely what he was asking of me. I could start the next day.

Experiencing Raymonds
Given the relatively small population of St. John’s and environs (just over a quarter million people, give or take), we have a lot of restaurants. What we don’t have in abundance is fine dining; in fact, Raymonds might be the only one in the province. Despite having eaten at a lot of restaurants over the last few years, we have avoided Raymonds for a few reasons: it’s far from cheap, the menu is not published in advance, and it can be hard to get a table there. I had precisely zero experience with a tasting menu before the night, and I was slightly concerned that multiple dishes would be something I didn’t like. As you may know if you’ve read any of my reviews here before, I have been trying to expand my tastes somewhat. A recent promotion at work gave us the excuse we needed to celebrate, so we bit the bullet and booked the table. We had no idea what was waiting for us.
A caveat: Raymonds is not for everyone. While the staff are incredibly accommodating and patient in explaining the menu options and ingredients, the choices are relatively set. There’s a five- and seven-course tasting menu, and a three-course menu that is somewhat à la carte. If one of the courses is something you just can’t eat they will try to make a substitution, but ultimately it’s down to the chef. The price is also high: the five-course menu is $125 per person, with an additional $80 if you go with the wine pairings (selected by the in-house sommelier and manager Jeremy Bonia). Not an everyday outing, that’s for sure.
We went for the five-course option, which actually ended up being more like eight courses by the time all the extras were provided. As adventurous as I wanted to get, I couldn’t stretch to trying scallops so we were able to substitute them for a beef option (more on that soon). We opted against the wine pairings this time, though I think when we go back we’ll take that plunge too.
You can tell a meal is going to be something special when the bread and butter they bring you to open the palate is better than most appetizers you’ve had, ever. House-made sourdough would have been great on its own, but it was served with whipped house-made smoked butter. I had never before had smoked butter, and now I am ruined forever. All future butter will either be smoked or inferior. I could have eaten it with a spoon.
This was somehow the beet dish, a beet and apple salad with ricotta, toasted red fife, and a topping of both beet and apple “glass” and some sort of hardened foam that melted in your mouth. I really don’t know how to describe this, except for “total tongue assault”. The combination of flavours and textures made every part of the palate sing. The apples were tart and crisp, the beets had their characteristic sweetness but were also pickled, the ricotta was exceedingly light and creamy, and the red fife gave a nutty undertone. The “glass” on the top was made from the juices of the apples and beets used in the dish, somehow turned solid and wafer-thin. If you can picture the thin film of ice that forms on puddles just as the temperature drops below freezing, that’s the texture. The flavour was intense with a subtle smoky, almost ashy taste that worked so well with everything else. The bread-looking stuff on the top was the foam that served almost as a tuile, and added a really light and airy crisp. When the waiter explained the dish as if he himself had conceived of it, I knew this was going to be unlike any meal I had ever had.
On to the pasta course, a moose ragout on orrechiette with more ricotta and finely-diced carrot, topped with a toasted breadcrumb. In the 20 years I have lived in Newfoundland, I have had so many people tell me that I would love moose. So I dutifully try it and dislike it, until the next person tells me that nobody else knows how to cook it and I should try it the way they cook it. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Now I can legitimately say that nobody else knows how to cook moose. This was tender almost to melting point, with a hint of the earthiness that had been overpowering and off-putting to me before. The ricotta here was of a different texture and flavour than in the previous dish, and it gave an excellent additional dimension to the dish. The pasta was pleasantly al dente, and the whole dish felt like a warm hug from the inside. High-end comfort food if you will. Although I did really enjoy this, I didn’t get the intensity of flavour from the ragout that I expected. It needed a bit more punch and depth I think. Sarah loved it more than me, but I still really enjoyed it.
Left to my own devices I would not normally order ribeye this rare. It was served in a veal and chanterelle jus (not the last time we will see chanterelles tonight) with a parsnip puree and charred broccoli and leeks. I just...I have no words. If you watch any cooking shows you have heard the term caramelization, but I never really fathomed how important it was until I ate this. No fancy seasonings, no special sauces, just a depth of beefy salty flavour that seemed so wonderfully natural. The jus added even more depth to the meat, and almost seemed to bridge the gap between the beef and the vegetables. The parsnip puree was perfectly smooth and slightly sweet, and the charred leeks in particular were beautifully done. “Meat and two veg” might be a British cliché for Sunday dinner, but this was that old chestnut rehashed and mastered.
Lamb three ways was up next: loin on the left, tenderloin on the right and lamb belly underneath. The loin was a touch disappointing and lacking in flavour, although the tenderloin made up for it. Both cuts were greatly enhanced by (yet-again) perfect caramelization. Sarah loves lamb and enjoyed hers much more, but her loin looked less fatty than mine so that may have been the difference.
I had not even heard of lamb belly before (as a meal, obviously I know lambs had bellies...), and it was an interesting offering. Definitely less fatty than the more common pork belly, but with a flavour that was actually pronounced. It was glazed with a black apple glaze and garnished with unripe blackcurrants, but the flavour on the glaze was either too subtle for me or just didn’t come through. I don’t remember what the jus was but it was delicious. On the side we had more parsnip puree and sliced celeriac. I’ve seen celeriac in supermarkets before and it did not look appealing, but the flavour was like parsnip with a hint of celery. Probably because it is related to them both.
Next up we had a “pre-dessert” as our waiter Julian called it - blueberries poached in brown butter with a chanterelle and blueberry pound cake, chanterelle meringue (!!) and chanterelle ice cream (!!!). Again, something I would never in a million years ordered on its own. Who’d even think of chanterelle ice cream? That said, this was a surprisingly good a refreshing amuse-bouche before the dessert. I am not normally a fan of blueberries, but they were good here with the brown butter. Pound cake is almost always delightful, and the addition of chanterelles almost seemed to lighten the usually dense cake. The real treats though were the meringue and ice cream. Sarah isn’t a big meringue fan but even she really enjoyed the lightness of it, and the ice cream had such a clean and subtle flavour that I finally understand the term “palette cleanser.” A bonus course, you say? Don’t mind if I do!
It’s not often I have to google an ingredient, but I had never heard of sea buckthorn before. One of the things mentioned in the description was that its flavour is enhance by something called maltolactic fermentation. Lactic, as in milk? Well that’s helpful. It was served as a curd, topped with a streusel and milk sorbet. The flavour is very hard to quantify: it reminded me of passion fruit, sour orange, mango and bakeapple all at the same time. The milk sorbet did wonders to mellow the tartness of the berries, which Sarah found stronger than I did. Definitely a unique flavour, but one I really want to work into a cheesecake somehow. To cap the meal off (in addition to our coffees), a lemon verbeena salted caramel was served, A delightful little treat to send us home.
Aside from how much I enjoyed everything, I think the biggest surprise to me was that despite the small serving sizes I was pleasantly full at the end of the meal. The service was impeccably friendly and helpful, not at all snobby as once could be forgiven for thinking. The decor really is reminiscent of every high-end restaurant you’ve seen on TV, complete with waiters with one arm in the small of their back. If you have an occasion to celebrate and/or the income to manage it, you owe it to yourself to visit Raymonds, It is not a meal you eat so much as it is a food experience, and I am a more rounded person for having done so.
Now to plan the return trip...

Legal grass without high
In Austria, there are more and more shops where you can legally buy cannabis flowers. However, without the psychoactive drug tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
In Switzerland, cigarettes with cannabis have been available since mid-July - cost around 20 francs (around 17 euros) per pack. But the "Swiss Tschick" from Switzerland do not make high, because the THC content is well below one percent (which is still above the Austrian limit of 0.3 percent). The cigarettes, which are regularly sold out due to high demand, contain cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD).
CBD is also allowed in Austria and enjoys increasing popularity. It is - unlike THC - not subject to the drug or drug law. Products can legally be bought and sold as long as they are not offered as a medical device or remedy.
One who specializes in the sale of such CBD products is Alex Moser, who is actually a full-time fisherman. I visit the young entrepreneur in the third district of Vienna in his business. Also, cannabis plants are raised and sold here. Its characteristic scent is heard several meters from the shop.
A look in the salesroom shows that Alex's shop is not a cliché-grow-shop. What you are looking for in vain, are about bongs, which are usually stacked in other grow shops to the ceiling. Alex stores his CBD specialties in a glass-door refrigerator in the corner of the sales room.
Who takes the stuff and what does it do?
The substance CBD is attributed by supporters numerous positive properties: It is said to have an anxiolytic, neuroprotective, antipsychotic and antispasmodic effect and also inhibit inflammation and nausea.
cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are substances found mainly in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica). The most studied cannabinoid is THC.
The cannabinoids are stored in special glandular hairs in the inflorescence and are present to a lesser extent in the leaves and stems of the plant. Hemp seeds contain no cannabinoids but are rich in fatty oil. The content of the individual ingredients depends on the type of hemp and climatic factors.
(Source: Wikipedia, AGES)
cannabidiol
Previous studies on CBD are said to have shown some success in epileptic patients as well as in patients with anxiety. Allegedly, the dose of analgesics was also reduced in some chemotherapy and pain patients by CBD. However, critics complain about the quality of the studies carried out so far: they are not sufficiently meaningful.
The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) concludes that "there are currently insufficient studies on possible effects on health. [...] Many effects attributed to cannabidiol have not yet been scientifically confirmed. "
Among his clients, Alex has many people in medical treatment: "For example, chemotherapy patients, epileptics, chronic pain patients, but also people with depression come by," Alex states. He grants you a discount of 10 percent.
There are also customers who have no health problems. Some come regularly, others maybe only once. Because not everyone has an effect on CBD at all. One thing is clear: the substance is not psychoactive like THC. In terms of side effects, Alex has only seen one thing: "Some have complained of mild abdominal pain after taking CBD oil."
That the skeptics still too little objective research results about CBD are on the table, the regular customers of Alex do not seem to bother - the majority is convinced of the positive effect.
A whole product range Cannabidiol comes in various forms and similarly diverse are the ways to eat it. On the one hand, you can simply add the oil mixtures to a piece of bread or add to the food. Alex usually takes a few drops under his tongue. "You do not taste the bitter taste so much and the active substance goes through the mucous membrane quite quickly into the blood." One can rinse with a glass of water a minute later, he explains to me.
Oils and flowers can also be taken with a "vaporizer", where the contents are heated up to 180 degrees and the resulting vapor is inhaled. High-purity and fine CBD crystals can be added to e-cigarette liquids and steamed in commercial e-cigarettes.
Furthermore, there are higher dosages in paste form, which are also taken sublingually as drops or spray. There are also CBD ointments. The shop also offers processed foods with CBD. The highlight: by Alex self-caught and smoked Reinanken of Lake Millstatt, which he has marinated with, among other CBD oil and rosemary.
And finally, cannabis flowers are sold in Alex's shop. They come from special breeds and hemp, in which the THC content is kept as low as possible. They do not visually differ from cannabis herb with THC. If you attack the flowers, they are less resinous. The legal CBD cabbage costs a little more than on the road: Twelve euros you have to pay for the gram. The CBD content of the flowers is about 17 percent. The THC content should not exceed 0.3 percent.
Then the police came: "Yes, what is that?"
What happens if I am picked up by the police with these legal flowers? In Switzerland, this happens allegedly more often - because there shoot for some time stores that sell CBD flowers from the ground like mushrooms. To prove in case of doubt that you carry legal stuff with you, the suspicious herb must be examined in the laboratory. In Switzerland, such a test with rich 500 francs (about 450 €) to book - the cost of the taxpayer takes over, which is a thorn in the side of many.
According to Viennese police spokesman Paul Eidenberger, this problem is still "not an issue" in Austria. He was not aware of any such cases. He stresses, however, that those who are caught with legal CBD grass are usually treated the same as someone who carries THC-containing cannabis herb.
"Allegations made by the accused of any ingredients are irrelevant, as they can not be reviewed on the spot anyway." - Paul Eidenberger, Press Spokesman LPD Vienna
"I always give my customers an invoice," explains Alex. Not only because of the cash register duty but to show that the herb was legally acquired and is also legal. However, the Vienna police spokesman Paul Eidenberger points out that an invoice cannot be recognized as evidence in an official act. The official acts would, according to police "according to the law and depending on the case."
In suspicious cases, the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation carries out an investigation in the laboratory in Austria. Contrary to the statements of the Vienna LPD, I learn from the Federal Criminal Police Office that in fact there have already been some isolated cases where, on the basis of information provided by the accused, an investigation was carried out. The results were mixed: some samples did not exceed the THC limit, in some cases, they were higher.
In the latter case threatens an ad according to the drug law, otherwise one remains impunity. The cost of a laboratory examination amounts to 100 euros in Austria and therefore does not burden the state budget as much as in Switzerland.
Selbstversuch Although I do not suffer from anxiety, have no epilepsy and no chronic pain. Despite missing "indication" I am curious and would like to try the self-experiment. For this, I roll a cigarette with some flakes of the CBD herb.
First, pull: The smell of smoke reminds of the air at festivals, the taste is sweet-earthy, but is dominated by the tobacco taste. While I smoke, I notice no effect. I'm clear in my head, I'm not dizzy, "Munchies" or other side effects are not noticeable.
About fifteen minutes after I finish smoking the "legal joint", I feel something: lying down in bed, my limbs and muscles actually feel a little more relaxed, as if the body tension had been somewhat throttled. Of high-being or a sense of intoxication but can be no question. It feels like you've just gently massaged the muscles for a short time. I stay clear in the head. That was it.
The flowers I smoked just before going to bed. Whether my sleep was better than usual, I can not really say, because I usually sleep quite quiet and usually without noticeable interruption.
The medicinal plant, Hype plant, high plant As with any substance, the effect is probably not least a matter of dosage and varies from person to person. Maybe just a placebo. From conversations with some consumers, I have at least heard that not everyone perceives a significant effect.
The current trend for CBD Alex says back, "that more and more people notice how positive it can affect, and that's just the round." Many people lose the fear of contact with hemp: "For some, it is interesting, because they do so finally try hemp without falling into the illegal area ", Alex emphasizes. The mood has even changed with many of his former critics.

Fighting Depression with Fish Oil Supplements
Depression Is a severe medical illness that an estimated 19 million individuals suffer with on a yearly basis. A high number of people don't seek treatment for a psychiatric condition; nonetheless, this type of condition often requires essential attention to be able to stop the problem from worsening or alternative conditions from growing. Normally, the ones that suffer with this illness have a lack of motivation or energy, they lose interest in activities which were once enjoyed, have a loss of desire, or be easily frustrated and frustrated, which frequently interferes with daily life--work, family, and socialization. But, this type of condition has come to be widely accepted and recognized through the years using the over-whelming amount of individuals --kids and adults alike--which suffer with depression.
Depression is not a condition To be ashamed of, and is an understandably accepted phenomenon in the current society. With gentle, mild, and even intense anxiety, you will find all organic therapy alternatives available--like the use of fish oils. When the majority of men and women seek therapy for depression they're originally prescribed drugs in their doctor in the shape of a pill or are known to a therapist for more evaluation of the status. Even though these anti-depressant medications may operate, there have been a number of harmful side-effects linked with antidepressant medications as well as the people that suffer with depression and take such drugs on a regular basis.
If these side-effects happen, it Could further hinder the ones that take the prescribed drugs. In more severe instances, there have been anti-depressant drugs which were associated with suicide or suicidal thoughts and tendencies. But, there's an all natural, side-effect free means to help fight depression and get back your life. It's been scientifically shown that using fish oils is connected with increased serotonin levels in the human body, which helps alleviate symptoms of depression. Furthermore, a daily consumption of fish oil helps to decrease, or even heal, a manic illness.
What causes Depression?
Depression is Due to physical changes in the brain and an imbalance of chemicals--neurotransmitters--which take the mind signals to your nerves. Especially, low serotonin levels in the brain are responsible for cerebral alterations. There's not one special reason that triggers melancholy, and it normally develops from exposure to a number of distinct factors collectively. Like genetics, so the condition very well might have been passed from a parent or in previous generations. If you're mindful of relatives who have suffered from depressive episodes or long-term depression, the probability of developing the illness yourself automatically grow.
Traumatic events and anxiety can also be Significant causes of melancholy. In the present market, people are stricken with fiscal anxieties and fears of where their next paycheck could come from or how to put dinner on the table. Additionally, the ones that suffer the loss of a loved person, or even a individual carrying out a traumatic experience, like an attack, together on a daily basis also generally fight melancholy. Many people frequently think people with low self-esteem suffer with depression, and have low self-esteem as they're depressed. To the contrary, the ones that deficiency self-confidence or self-esteem are usually proven to be cynical people by character, and finally exhibit depressive symptoms in a certain time in their lives following coping with reduced self-esteem problems for a considerable time period. Individuals who are goods of a sexually, physically, or mentally violent environment, or an environment with continuous struggles, like an impending divorce, frequently develop into a case of melancholy.
The ingestion of certain medications Also Have been Linked to instances of depression. It's been discovered that lots of people who suffer from hypertension and take drugs to help control these ailments, like beta blockers or reserpine, frequently develop depression due to the disturbance in the transmission of these neurotransmitters in the brain. Furthermore, there are also people who suffer from other medical and physical conditions--like cancer, HIV and AIDS, as well as heart failure--which fight to come to grips with the simple fact that they might have a diminished or restricted amount of time together with family and friends, and also cannot achieve all their needs prior to leaving everyone and everything . With depression, it's been demonstrated that additional ailments often accompany depression. These additional conditions include, but aren't limited to, schizophrenia, anxiety, eating disorders, in addition to substance abuse so as to acquire a little degree of relief from these melancholy conditions. Together with the daily consumption of fish oils, but the probability of developing depression or other condition that match with melancholy greatly decrease or be removed all together.
Why Utilize Fish Oils to Deal with Depression?
There've been a lot of valuable scientific research, which have demonstrated that elevated amounts of omega-3 abundant fish oils significantly decrease the signs of depression, and perhaps even cure melancholy all together. Back in 1993, a psychologist by Harvard's McLean Hospital stumbled upon the connection between omega-3 fatty acids and fish oils to either reduce or eliminate symptoms of depression whilst exploring for a brand new treatment for use against manic depressive disease, otherwise called bi-polar disease. Back in 1998, the initial analysis results were published and printed in the'Journal of Affective Disorders', saying that people with lower than average levels of all omega-3 fatty acids--found abundantly in fish oils--in their red blood cell membranes were more prone to come up with a melancholy condition or suffer from a psychiatric illness.
An Article after in 1999 with a group of medical doctors was printed at the'Archives of General Psychiatry', announced results they discovered at a controlled research group of 30 severely unhappy people, which obtained omega-3 fatty acids via fish oils. Greater than 60 percent of people from the controlled group that obtained a mere 10 g of their omega-3 rich fish oils indicated a huge improvement when the 10 g of fish oils had been obtained on a daily basis to get a 4 month interval. In different countries with greater fish consumption, because of fish being the principal delicacy, it's also been discovered that those societies in entire have lower levels of depression entire, which also straight empowers scientists to further accredit their research outcomes. Additionally, in 2007 a research was conducted that contained 10 clinical trials of people afflicted by varying degrees of melancholy, which analyzed the consequences of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils, and also the correlation between elevated amounts of fish oils and melancholy.
The Conclusion of these studies found that fish oils, that are polyunsaturated fats that can't be generated by the body naturally and are derived chiefly in the usage of sea foods, had a substantial effect on decreasing depression symptoms and basically the fish oils behaved as an anti-depressant. Researchers and scientists alike are pushing for its organic, value-added free fish oils for use more broadly so as to help cure or treat melancholy, which in turn will help alleviate different ailments which are frequently developed because of depressive problems. Given the mostly positive outcomes from the decades of study, it's widely concluded that using fish oils is critical to proper physiological functions and the reduction or total elimination of melancholy.
How Fish Oils Decrease Depression
Biochemical Researchers point out that cell membranes are partially composed of omega-3 fatty acids, which means that the brain is composed of those omega-3 fatty acids, and also the walls of neurons can also be composed of these omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oils. As a matter of fact, researchers from Harvard's McLean Hospital state that the majority of the brain's dry weight is composed out of fat. Fish oils contain essential fatty acids which aren't found within our own bodies obviously, and our own bodies just get the valuable fish oils during our diets. Fish oils can't be produced or synthetically created--it has to be ingested from a natural source or a supply created with the organic fish oil components.
If Individuals increased their everyday consumption of those omega-3 fatty acids by simply consuming more fundamental omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oils--by simply taking pill nutritional supplements or incorporating fish to their diet two or three times a week--it could be made easier for serotonin--the chemical that carries messages from 1 brain cell to another--to pass through cell membranes, which might regulate physiological functions and decrease or eliminate symptoms of depression ailments. Considering that omega-3 fatty acids--found in fish oils--right affect serotonin levels in the mind, in addition to alter how our bodies function, using fish oils is strongly advocated, and there have been discussions of prescribing the omega-3 abundant fish oils together with drugs like Prozac.
What Causes Low Levels of Omega-3 and Serotonin?
Investigators Have discovered through numerous studies over recent years that, over the past several decades, changes in dietary habits--for example ridding diets of saturated fats and cholesterol, found in red meats or eggs--are contributors to raising low levels of their omega-3 fatty acids within the body since the things cut out of daily diets tend to be rich sources of their omega-3 fatty acids. In the present society, and together with all the numerous medial developments and findings on cholesterol and tension, physicians are counseling their patients to eliminate or lower the number of foods which once provided them with the correct levels of omega-3 fatty acidsthat have been maintaining serotonin levels in check.
To be able to Relieve high cholesterol or tension, dietary modifications might want to happen under the advice of a doctor, however, good supplementation of those omega-3 fatty acids--found in fish oils--should also happen to maintain appropriate levels of serotonin so as to avoid gastrointestinal disorders, mood swings, and in addition to the development of anxiety disorders. It's particularly common in people which don't eat sea food, or are allergic to sea foods, to get lower than average levels of their crucial omega-3 fatty acids in their diets. If swallowing fish is a challenging endeavor, it's suggested to find supplementation such as including fish oil supplements through pill form so as to prevent dangerously low levels of serotonin, which might cause a melancholy condition.
Types of Beneficial Fish Oil Pills
There Are many distinct kinds of fish oils which may be taken so as for the appropriate heights of omega-3 fatty acids, which maintain your serotonin levels and depressive condition in check, and return back into your body. At times, including a true part of fish to your everyday diet can help begin to renew the appropriate quantity of omega-3 to a daily diet during the crucial fish oils. But not all fish are created equal and the quantity of Omega 3 in every fish fluctuates. It's also important to keep in mind that consuming an excessive amount of fish may result in mercury poisoning as a result of toxins absorbed from our polluted seas from the fish's skin.
To protect you from this, many caregivers counsel Finding the recommended dose of Omega 3 via ultra elegant ultra high Dose fish oil supplements. Companies selling these nutritional supplements filter Out the impurities out of the fish oil so individuals taking the capsules are Ingesting just the valuable Omega 3 fatty acids rather than harmful toxins Like mercury, lead, PCBs and other contaminants. Such nutritional supplements Can be gotten for moderate or low prices online, at neighborhood vitamin Shops, department stores, or health food shops. Since fish oils Can't Be made or synthetically generated, each one the fish oil Supplements available are created out of organic fish oil components.

Can Hamsters Eat Worms? Any Risks?

Can Hamsters Eat Worms? Any Risks?
Hamsters are omnivores, which means wild hamsters eat a mixture of plants and insects. The best diet for your hamster is the one that is similar to what it would eat in the wild, including fresh vegetables and protein-rich items such as mealworms.
So, the answer is a resounding yes. Dried mealworms are a wonderful and nourishing addition to your hamster’s diet. They provide a plus of protein, fat, and fiber. The mealworms are also rich in saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids.
The safest way to feed your hamster mealworms is dried, so they won’t get the chance to nest in your hamster’s mouth, as they tend to stuff their food into their cheek pouch.
Why are worms good for hamsters?
The nutrition plan for hamsters has to be supplemented with the animal component. In the wild, hamsters feed on insects among other things. Therefore, hamsters should also receive animal protein three to four times a week, which is best fed directly from your hand.
You might also like my articles on whether hamsters can eat bread and oranges.
The mealworms are particularly suitable for them because they have a high-fat content and many vitamins. They are an excellent source of vitamins K, B12, and calcium.
Are worms healthy for hamsters?
Worms can be included in a hamster’s diet as long as you chose the proper ones to be fed. Animal shops offer you a vast variety, but the best ones are dried mealworms. They are recommended to be offered as a treat as they are rich in essential nutrients and fat-free.
Even though they are good for your pet’s health, moderation is the key, because if your hamster eats too much, obviously they become too fatty.
Can I feed my pet hamster worms every day?
No, you shouldn’t feed them every day; 2 or 3 times a week is more than enough.
Some owners notice that their hamster has days when it totally refuses to eat and it is ok to let your pet digest its food in its own rhythm.
Can worms cause infection in hamsters?
People that offer alive mealworms to their hamsters always ask themselves if mealworms bite.
No. Like super worms, mealworms have a jaw, but it seems to be too small and weak to be useful in biting. Mealworms do not seem to be able or capable of biting.
The biggest problem when you offer your hamster alive worms is the high probability of getting an infection as they might not be able to digest them well. In most cases, you should see a veterinarian if your pet feels sick and has a temperature.
Another cause of the infection might be a blockage in its digestive system. This happens if your hamster eats worm larvae, alive worms, or too many dried worms at once.
Regardless of the type of worms you choose to offer your hamster, they should always be dried and fat-free.
Why does my hamster refuse to eat mealworms?
A hamster won’t starve, so he’ll eat them. Maybe you could crush a few and give them as a treat.
Another idea is to mix crushed mealworms with a small amount of flour, water, small seeds, and perhaps a little peanut butter. You can offer them in this way so they won’t waste the mealworms.
If the hamster is in a closed terrarium or a special cage, you can occasionally give it crickets or worms. They contain many proteins necessary for them and these are also safe.

17 “Zero” Calorie Foods That Will Help You Lose Weight
Even with nutritional facts available online, it can be difficult to find diet foods with the right ratio of calories to essential nutrients. In other words, even experienced dieters sometimes need a quick, low-calorie reference guide like the one below.
Do Zero Calorie Foods Actually Exist?
The short answer is no, but don’t despair. Foods have calories that generate energy for your body. There are also good and bad calories. This may seem daunting at first, but remember that the majority of bad calorie foods are also higher calorie.
Good calories come from:
complex carbohydrates in beans, fiber-rich vegetables, and whole grains
unsaturated fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 in nuts, fish, avocadoes, and olives
lean proteins in skinless chicken, fish, plain yogurt, and tofu (soy)
That doesn’t mean you can eat as much of the above foods as you want. You should still count calories because too many lead to weight gain. But at the very least, you can avoid the bad calories, which come from:
processed foods like potato chips, soda, and cookies
refined foods like sugary breakfast cereals and white flour
high-sugar foods like low-fat yogurt, chocolate milk, most canned soups, and canned fruit
There is one more thing you should know before we dive into our list. With bad calorie foods, you should basically count the calories on the label twice. Even on a 1,000 calorie diet, you can still gain weight if you are taking in too many bad calories. The list below will help you target the calories and nutrients you need, providing you with a balanced and reasonable diet. It also runs the gamut in terms of the five flavor profiles – bitter, sweet, sour, salty and savory.
1. Apples
Some are bitter, some sour, and some sweet. Regardless of flavor, a cup of sliced apples contains 57 calories and has 3 grams of dietary fiber along with antioxidants (which can help prevent heart disease and cancer) and other nutrients.
Since digesting apples actually burns calories, the net calories are probably a little less than 57. This also makes them a great breakfast food that can kickstart your metabolism in the morning.
2. Arugula
Eating arugula means you never have to have a bland salad again. This lettuce has a savory, peppery, and slightly bitter flavor. One cup has six calories.
Arugula also contains vitamin K (which helps with blood clotting and wound healing), calcium and potassium (which help keep your bones strong), and folate (which is key in cell division and growth).
3. Broccoli
Broccoli is one of the most nutritious vegetables out there. One cup provides 100% of your daily vitamin C needs. It is packed with cancer-preventing nutrients. It also contains more protein per calorie than steak! One cup contains 31 calories.
Broccoli is in the cruciferous family with cabbage and cauliflower. It can be baked, steamed, boiled, sauteed, mixed with meats, or thrown into soups.
4. Broth
Broth is an extremely versatile liquid used in soups, parboils, and gravies. One filling cup contains 7-12 calories. Chicken or beef broth will give you that salty, savory flavor, while vegetable broth will have a lighter, more complex taste. While it doesn’t have a huge amount of protein, you can pack basically any vegetable on this list into it for quick, nutritious soup.
5. Carrots
Carrots are naturally sugary and great for satisfying a sweet tooth. A cup of carrots contains 53 calories, 6 grams of sugar, and 2 of fiber. In addition, carrots contain copious amounts of the nutrients essential to eye health – beta carotene and vitamin A.
If you are tired of the flavor of orange carrots, try the starchier tasting white and yellow varieties. For a richer, earthier flavor, try the red or purple ones. They are best eaten raw but are delicious baked or grilled.
6. Cauliflower
Cauliflower is very popular right now. In restaurants, it is mashed to replace potatoes (which are much higher in carbohydrates). They can also be made into (or bought as) a cracker base or pizza crust.
This cruciferous veggie contains 25 calories per cup, 2 grams of protein, 5 total carbs, and 2 grams of dietary fiber. Cauliflower is unique in that it contains absolutely no sugar, so it is ideal for a low-carb diet.
7. Celery
Since most of celery’s dietary fiber is insoluble and therefore can’t be digested, it cannot be absorbed as calories. Insoluble fiber is one of two types essential to bowel health and function. Celery is also low-carb, low in sugar, and reasonably fiber-rich.
Containing 18 calories per cup, celery is as close to a natural zero calorie food as you can get. Its high water content gives it a low flavor profile, making it a great filler in dishes like spaghetti, meatloaf, and soups.
8. Clementines
Not to be confused with tangerines, this diminutive fruit is a hybrid cultivated from the sweet orange and the mandarin orange. They are typically sweeter and less acidic than oranges.
One of these little guys has just 35 calories. While they have trace amounts of many vitamins, just one contains almost 60% of your daily vitamin C needs. Though sweet, the clementine has only nine grams of carbohydrates.
9. Cucumbers
95% water, moderately sweet and crisp, this vegetable, which has many species, is actually a gourd in the same family as the zucchini. While they are a favorite in salads, cucumbers can also be used as pickles and in salsas, chutneys, and even jams.
One cup contains only 16 calories. Add to that trace amounts of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as magnesium, manganese, and potassium.
10. Garlic
Garlic is pungent and savory, and you will find it in many ethnic dishes. Technically a root, it is in the same family as onions, leaks, and chives. It has nearly a dozen proven health benefits, with anti-inflammatory and anti-viral qualities.
An entire clove of garlic (about the maximum you would put in any dish) contains a mere 4.5-5 calories. A clove also has a moderate amount of calcium, copper, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamin B1. It can be a great salt substitute as well.
11. Kale
Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world. It has one of the highest concentrations of vitamins K and A, which help blood clot and wounds heal. Rich, savory, and slightly bitter, it can be a salad leaf or put into soups and smoothies.
One cup has 33 calories, 6 grams of carbs, 2 grams of dietary fiber, and an amazing 3 grams of protein. With a little oil, salt, and pepper, they can be dehydrated into delicious chips that make a satisfying, low-calorie snack.
Kale, like its cousin spinach, has some interesting qualities. Its flavor concentrates and increases when cooked. It also lowers bad cholesterol, has eye-enhancing nutrients, and prevents cancer. It is very filling and an excellent daily food for weight loss.
12. Legumes (especially garbanzos and peas)
The term “superfood” is thrown around a lot nowadays, but it truly applies to the two legumes on our list.
Beans and peas are high in fiber and protein, low in fat, and contain vitamins B1, B9, K, manganese, and often iron. Studies show they may reduce your risk of heart disease. They may also mitigate the effects of type 2 diabetes.
One cup of earthy, savory garbanzo beans (chickpeas) has 269 calories (good ones), 14.5 grams of protein, and 12.5 of dietary fiber. A major study has shown chickpeas help reduce your blood sugar levels, so they are great for diabetics and vegetarians alike.
Green peas (the ones from the Pisum sativum plant) have a sweet note, and are one of the highest fiber vegetables in the world per volume. One cup contains just 125 calories, 8.2 grams of protein, and 8.8 grams of dietary fiber.
Peas are known to fight blood pressure and prevent kidney disease. A little known fact is that they can be a quick, satisfying treat straight out of your freezer.
13. Lemons and Limes
These two tangy, sour citrus fruits often go together in Mexican food, drinks, and pickling recipes. One fluid ounce of either contains just 8 calories. They are also packed with antioxidants, heart-protecting flavonoids, and vitamin C.
Studies also show that lemons and limes contain a special antioxidant called polyphenols. This nutrient may help jumpstart your metabolism, help your body process fat more quickly while enhancing your response to natural insulin.
14. Peppers
Sweet or bitter, large, small, or spicy, peppers can be snacked on raw, stuffed, roasted, put into salads and relishes, or used as an edible garnish. The health benefits of the humble pepper are about as diverse as the number of species that bear the name.
One cup of chopped red bell peppers has 46 calories, just under 9 grams of carbs (6 net carbs), and is extremely high in antioxidants. Since they contain a lot of water per volume, they also make a filling addition to your diet in any form.
15. Strawberries
These special berries range in flavor from tart to sweet. They are extremely versatile, found in jams, salads, desserts, and on yogurt and breakfast cereals. Among their many health benefits are enhanced heart health and cancer prevention.
One cup of sliced strawberries contains just over 50 calories, a mere six grams of sugar, nearly three grams of dietary fiber, and your 100% of your daily vitamin C needs.
16. Tomatoes
Sweet or tart, red, yellow, or green, tomatoes can be served raw on salads, or cooked in stews, roasts, soups, and pies. A slice or two of tomato can easily replace a sugary ketchup serving.
One cup of sliced tomatoes contains about 27 calories, no fat, as few as 4.3 carbohydrates, and plenty of vitamins like A and C. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, a cancer-fighting and heart disease-preventing nutrient.
17. Zucchini
Zucchini is one of the cheapest, healthiest, and most versatile foods in the squash family. With its high water content and mild flavor, it can be a filler in spaghetti or a flavor carrier in soups and bakes. You can even make nice, firm noodles out of it.
A cup of raw zucchini (which can be snacked on) contains just over 26 calories, 3.4 grams of protein, 1 gram of fiber, and about 4 carbs. With lots of water and low-fat inner flesh, this veggie can stretch dishes, making them healthier and more filling.
Zucchini’s many health benefits include high amounts of vitamin A, C, and manganese, along with many antioxidants. The squash is also purported to help lower blood sugar, aid in digestion, improve cardiac health, and protect your vision.
To Cook or Not To Cook?
Cooking these foods at high temperatures greatly reduces many of the nutrients. When you must cook any of these 17 items (except broth), your best best for nutrient retention is dehydrating (at no more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit) or steaming.
To maximize the benefits the 16 solid foods on our list, go with raw. You can and probably should heat broth to prevent pathogens from getting into it, and heating does not change the nutritional content.
Some Final Thoughts
Remember that a calorie-counting diet primarily means avoiding the bad calories (from processed, refined, and high sugar foods) and maximizing the good calories (from complex carbs, unsaturated fatty acids, and lean proteins).
Balance the good calories with high nutrient content to keep the number of total calories (even good ones) down. Remember, dieting is about practice and perseverance. Don’t give up. You now have 17 new strategies for satisfying and healthy eating.

Can Chinchillas Eat Peanuts?
Wild chinchillas likely eat nuts and seeds, when they find them. So should you feed a pet chinchilla peanuts? And if not, why not?
Can chinchillas eat peanuts? They can, but peanuts of all kinds are nutritionally unsuitable for chinchillas. That includes roasted nuts, raw peanuts, unsalted and salted, and even monkey nuts still in their shells. They are too high in fat and calories so can make chinchillas overweight. They also don't contain enough fiber or carbohydrate for your chinchilla's gut, so may cause bloating. Feed your chinchilla safe snacks like rose hips, sweet hay or shredded wheat instead.
The guide below details exactly why chinchillas shouldn't eat peanuts, by looking at their nutritional content vs. the nutrients a chinchilla needs. We'll also look at some of the side effects that peanuts are likely to cause (and they aren't pretty). And for anybody who is going to insist on giving their chinchilla peanuts, we've also made recommendations on serving sizes that, while not good for your chinchilla, at least aren't likely to cause it significant harm.
Can Chinchillas Eat Peanuts?
Chinchillas can physically eat peanuts. They have big, strong teeth that can easily break them apart. And chins aren't stupid, so won't try swallowing peanuts whole—they know to chew them first. But while a peanut won't immediately poison or choke your chinchilla, it won't be good for its health, so we don't recommend feeding them.
Do Chinchillas Like Peanuts?
Chinchillas enjoy eating anything new, sweet and/or fatty. They're naturally inclined to eat high-calorie foods because these are hard to find in the wild—the same instinct that we have. So, if you offer your chinchilla a peanut, it will eat it.
The problem is that your chin doesn't know what's best for it. It's in the wild, and it has unlimited access to hay and pellets. It doesn't need to gorge on dense foods like peanuts. In that sense, peanuts are a lot like the chinchilla equivalent of the snacks and fast food that we enjoy eating (but probably shouldn't).
Why Can't Chinchillas Eat Peanuts?
Peanuts are nutritionally unsuitable for chinchillas. If fed regularly, they will make your chinchilla gain weight. And because your pet isn't used to them, they could cause digestive issues like bloating, too.
Nutrients in Peanuts
To fully understand why peanuts have the effect that they do, you have to look at the specific amounts of each nutrient they contain. The table below uses data from NutritionValue.org. These data relate generically to unsalted peanuts, not one brand or another.
NutrientsAmount per 100gRequirementsCarbohydrate16g35gSugar4.7g5gFat49g2-4gProtein26g16-21gFiber8.5g30gWater6.5g10-15gCalories567200
It should be immediately obvious that peanuts don't give chinchillas some of what they need, and give far too much of things they don't need much of.
Carbohydrate, Protein & Fat in Peanuts
The key issue with peanuts is that they contain far too much fat for chinchillas.
Contrary to popular belief, no one nutrient is the 'enemy'. You shouldn't entirely cut out carbs, fat, or anything else. Rather, the issue here is that fat contains more calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates (roughly double). As such, peanuts have almost three times as many calories as chinchillas need. This means that your pet will quickly gain weight if you feed it peanuts, even as a snack. The fact that peanuts have around 20-40% more protein than chinchillas need makes this problem even worse.
What else makes peanuts unsuitable is that they contain little fiber, or at least, less fiber than chinchillas need. Chins need a very high fiber diet, perhaps up to 30g per 100g. Their digestive systems are tailored to just such a diet. If your chin doesn't get enough fiber, its stools may be soft or even runny.
Vitamins & Minerals in Peanuts
Peanuts have lots of vitamins and minerals compared to other foods, both in terms of the number of different micronutrients they contain, and the amounts of each. Here is a table, again with data from NutritionValue.org, that lists each micronutrient that peanuts contain high amounts of:
Vitamin/MineralAmount per 100gVitamin B10.64mgVitamin B20.135mgVitamin B312.066mgVitamin B51.767mgVitamin B60.348mgVitamin E8.33mgCopper1.144mgIron4.58mgMagnesium168mgManganese1.934mgPhosphorus376mgPotassium705mgSelenium7.2mcgZinc3.27mg
This table may seem like a plus-point in favor of peanuts, but it's not.
Chinchillas can thrive on a diet of hay and hay alone. That's because hay contains every vitamin and mineral that chinchillas need to live healthy lives. That may seem surprising, but many animals don't need a varied diet like we do.
If your chinchilla is deficient in something, peanuts aren't an effective 'supplement'. Rather you should talk to your vet about actual supplements. Take calcium, for example: timothy hay doesn't contain quite enough, which is why chinchilla pellets often contain alfalfa, which contains lots. If your chin isn't getting enough, the vet can recommend a suitable supplement. Or, you can give your chinchilla a cuttle bone as a chew toy. Both of these options are better than peanuts because they don't make your pet gain weight or have digestive issues.
Are Peanuts Poisonous to Chinchillas? (Digestive Issues)
Peanuts aren't poisonous for chinchillas. Your chin can eat one, and it won't immediately get sick, let alone pass away.
Rather, they cause digestive issues. These take longer to appear than a poison would take to take effect. Peanuts, and any food your chinchilla is unfamiliar with, can cause bloating which is a dangerous problem for a chinchilla to face.
This occurs because a chinchilla's digestive system is set up perfectly to digest rough fibers like those found in hay. The chinchilla digests its food twice over to extract as much nutrition from it as possible, and its gut bacteria and enzymes specialize in breaking down fibrous foods. While peanuts are reasonably fibrous, they are nowhere near as fibrous as hay.
When the chinchilla's gut has to digest something it isn't used to, the food can ferment. When this happens, it produces lots of gas, and since chins can't pass gas easily, this gas gets trapped. So much can get trapped that the chinchilla's gut or stomach lining can burst. While this won't happen if you feed your chinchilla just one peanut, peanuts and other unsuitable snacks can contribute to an existing issue, or create an issue from nothing if fed regularly.
Can Chinchillas Eat Raw Peanuts?
The statistics above relate to raw, unsalted peanuts. Every peanut has this much fat in it, that many calories in it (if not more), and isn't suited to your chinchilla's diet. That applies to peanuts you get in packets, peanuts you get in tubs, or monkey nuts that you get with their shells still on.
Can Chinchillas Eat Salted Peanuts?
Salted peanuts are worse for your pet than raw peanuts. That's because of all the sodium (salt) they contain/have on their surface. Sodium has negative health effects like raising blood pressure. It's proven to increase the risks of kidney disease, stomach cancer and heart failure too. While these effects haven't been proven in chinchillas specifically, they have been observed in other rodents, so are likely to occur in chinchillas too.
Can Chinchillas Eat Peanut Shells?
While peanuts aren't suitable for chinchillas, peanut shells are.
Peanut shells are too tough and fibrous for us to eat. But it's these qualities that make them the perfect chew toy for chinchillas. Chins need a chew toy to keep their teeth from growing overlong. Apple wood sticks are a common choice, and there's no reason not to give these. But chinchillas enjoy having new toys and new treats: it keeps them entertained.
Peanut shells are a good choice because when chinchillas gnaw on things, they can accidentally ingest some by accident. That's why it's best to offer chew toys made from natural materials like wood. Peanut shells don't contain the same high levels of fat and protein that peanuts do, which means they're safe to ingest.
Can Chinchillas Eat Peanut Butter?
Peanut butter is tasty, but doesn't make a good chinchilla treat.
The same issues that apply to regular peanuts apply to peanut butter, too. Peanut butters have the same, if not higher, levels of fat and protein than raw peanuts. They have lots of salt added, too.
And besides nutrition, peanut butter poses other problems. If you got any peanut butter in your chinchilla's fur, it would be a nightmare to clean out.
How Many Peanuts Can Chinchillas Eat?
We would recommend against feeding your chinchilla any peanuts, for the reasons covered above. On top of that, though, there are snacks that are perfectly suitable for chinchillas that won't have these effects. Chinchillas enjoy these snacks just as much as fatty, sugary or generally unhealthy ones. There's therefore no logical justification for offering unhealthy peanuts when healthy rose hips or herbs will suffice.
And besides that, chinchillas don't need snacks to thrive or be happy. So even if there were no healthy snacks you could give to your pet, the logical choice would be to feed no snacks at all.
If you are going to feed your chinchilla peanuts anyway, do the right thing and limit the portion size that you offer. A sliver of one peanut will give your pet the fun of having a snack but with little chance of experiencing negative health effects.
How Often Can Chinchillas Eat Peanuts?
Again, we would recommend not feeding your chinchilla any peanuts, so the optimal frequency is 'never'. If you insist on feeding your chinchilla peanuts, though, you can limit their negative effects by only feeding them very infrequently. Once a month is a sensible maximum.
Should Chinchillas Eat Peanuts?
As a rule, you shouldn't feed your chinchilla any peanuts. No matter the brand, whether they're salted or unsalted, 'organic' or not they are all unsuitable for your pet in the same way. As such, you should consider feeding your pet chinchilla-safe snacks like rose hips, flower petals or sweet hay. These treats are cheap and easy to find, and are nutritionally suitable for your chin.
