Sanemi Shinazugawa was an explosive, aggressive, and reckless man. He was loud and his whole personality seemed to be straight up mean, unafraid to be as rude as possible. And honestly, Obanai didn’t mind. But he wondered, sometimes, about other parts of Sanemi. Certainly he’d seen some other versions of him—insistent; forcing him to eat, sullen; quiet and moody, disappointed; grumbling and stomping around—but there must be something else. Some parts of him more tender, more… not necessarily sweet. Maybe gentle. But would he really see any of this—it already sounded so unlikely, so the likelihood of it was quite low. But then, on a paired mission, he was proven that it didn’t actually take much.

They were trekking through the dense forest, their irritation rising. The Demon Slayers assigned here had sent for help and now they were stuck here, unable to find any paths that led to a village that sat apparently in the middle of nowhere. But finally, they got there, finding the (incompetent) Demon Slayers and asking what happened. Demons were quickly beheaded after that and the survivors were gathered up. Quite a lot of the villagers had been injured and a few killed. One of the dead had a child—who was reported to have no blood relatives. Unfortunately it was a baby which wouldn’t stop crying. None of the other villagers were up for caring for it, tired and traumatized from the experience, so the baby was handed to Obanai who held it awkwardly, trying to rock it to sleep. Sanemi had been helping bury the dead when Obanai was bandaging the villagers who were in more immediate need, but he came over now, holding a toddler in his arms.

Obanai looked up, slightly relieved. “Shinazugawa- Can you… help? This baby won’t stop crying,” he said, glancing down in disdain at the baby.

Sanemi rolled his eyes then turned to the toddler in his own arms. “I’m gonna put you down, can you stay close? We’re going to get all of you somewhere safe in a bit, but I need to do this first. So don’t run off, ‘kay, kid?” he asked. The child nodded obediently and let himself be put down, immediately latching onto Sanemi’s pant leg and hugging him close.

Obanai stared at him, wondering if this was the same Sanemi he’d known for the past few years before relinquishing the baby to him.

The baby, still somehow having the energy to scream was doing just that, flailing it’s little arms as if it would do anything. Sanemi held it carefully, a hand behind its head as he rocked it gently, murmuring what sounded like some sort of lullaby. The baby, unfazed, continued crying. Obanai sighed, deciding they should probably give up and go find Shinobu maybe but Sanemi wasn’t stopping, soothing it with an uncharacteristically gentle voice. His eyes had softened and he was gazing down at the baby with some sort of fondness Obanai couldn’t place. Before Obanai could say anything, the baby decided that it was done dehydrating itself and began to calm down, its cries diminishing into hiccups. Miniature hands grasped wildly and closed loosely around Sanemi’s uniform, fidgeting with the golden button a small gurgle of laughter bubbling in its mouth as Sanemi smiled, continuing to rock his arms in slow motions. Eventually, the baby dozed off (rather suddenly, Obanai noted) and Sanemi relaxed by an inch, glancing down to make sure the toddler by his leg was alright before he met Obanai’s gaze.

“…what?” he said, frowning.

“Since when were you good with children?” Obanai asked flatly, staring at him as if he was an alien.

“Uh… Next question?”

okay so this is the BARE bones of a backstory but lace is the newish secretary of a big crime boss and quintus (not her real name) is the boss's like. second cousin or something but first and foremost his most brutal enforcer/torturer. they are fucking behind the boss's back. lace is a decade and a half younger than quintus. lace is also a plant from a rival family and is literally feeding info to them. quintus is spending half her salary on lace and actually does know that lace is a traitor she just kind of dgaf. this probably isn't going to end well
