Summary ~ Daryl finds a journal on a supply run and reads it, what will happen when he sees the world through someone else's perspective?  Comment if you wish to be added to the Tagslist.
Words ~ 2400ish Warnings~ A time jump other than that none. Sorry for any mistakes!! (Gif not mine, all credits go to angelwings-crossbowstings)
The Entries Chapter 2.
8 months pass, and Daryl spends the months working in the Commonwealth, going between all the communities, helping them build more houses for the new survivors, going on supplies runs, hunting and expanding the map for areas that they have explored and cleaned out. The latest run took him 4 days by bike. Daryl always checked out the big supermarkets first, before hitting the smaller ones.
Daryl reaches behind him and grab a single arrow, tapping it on the glass to attractanything inside, he waits for a few before entering the building, the smell of decay hitting him, but he ignores it, he quickly glances around before his eyes stop on a book, almost the same to the first one he found. He walks over to it, opening it to the first page, he notices your handwriting.
Like a child guarding your diary from anyone who dares to read it, it reads. "The journal of Y/N Y/L/N. Keep out (Just kidding keep reading. It's fine)"
He places the journal into a basket as he searches the shelves for anything these days, he has been keeping an eye out for seeds to plant in the gardens, he found that those were one of things that many left behind in a hurry. He wonders how long it has been since you have been here. Were you the one who killed the walkers inside?
That night he takes shelter in the office of the supermarket as the wind picks up outside and the rain pitter patters against the windows. Daryl was not wanting to risk getting caught in a horde in this weather. He sits with his back against the door, candles lighting up the small room. He opens the book, the paper crinkling as he flips through, looking at drawings, photos and small writings at the start. Entry update number ????? "It has been months since my last update, I just had to find the right book to keep writing, as if it matters though and if you found my old journal than you know what I am doing, you know my name and a bit of my story, I am wondering if you are enjoying it so far?. I know it is not an award-winning journalism but for the end of the world, you gotta take what life gives you, it's hard to write daily about the same thing that is why I try to write when big things happen, can you imagine how boring each entry would be if they were all the same? I am sure that if this was a blog you would be reading it (I joke trust me I would never write a blog)
I have come across some nice folks, I even have a group now, its small but we are doing ok, we are surviving, it is not living but it does the trick. I have learnt how to fight and hunt a little, Manny is teaching me how to track wildlife. They have a camp, it has high walls and rooms for us, it's safe enough. I can never trust anyone is 100% safe; I take my turns keeping guard and helping on supply runs. We are talking about moving to a bigger location, but we are yet to find it. We want to build crops and have animals to raise." Once again there are pictures some of before the end of the world, others from your camp. He notices the changes on your face, the way your face now tells a tale that you don't need a journal to read, a tale of survival. You glued a before and after on the page, before was you dressed up about to go out, makeup and hair done, handbags and high heels and now the after was jeans, combat boots, a t-shirt and jacket, you traded the handbag for a rifle and your hair is brushed back into a bun, he notices the scar that starts above your eye then under, wondering when that happened. If Daryl was being honest, he prefers the now you over the old you.
Entry 20 something~ "I can't remember that last entry of my old journal, so I'll start at 20 this time. My camp is on the move, we started getting more biters daily that we feared for our supplies, bullets mostly. Manny and Tim distracted them and moved them away while we loaded the cars with what we had and moved out, unfortunately we lost Tim. Biter got him on the way back to the meet up point, Manny had to put him down, I tried to comfort him, but it was hard.  I no longer feel sadness; it is like I have gotten used to losing people that tears don't form so easily these days. I try not to make too many attachments. I have had to learn to shut emotions off, some of the group hate that other get emotional over people's death, they view it as weak. I will miss Tim, but I can't mourn him, that is just the way it is now." Daryl blows the candles out and places the book next to him, as he lays in the darkness, trying to sleep. He understands where you are coming from. This new chapter isn't made for the ones who are constantly sad over losses, they are viewed as a liability. He can recall the two times he has shown weakness, the first when he found Carol and friends after the losing the prison, the second was the death of Beth. Growing up Daryl was used to being beaten by a parent and as child he learnt to shut down when you just want to break down, he always had Merle there but even his brother taught he that men shouldn't cry, it makes you weak and pathetic.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The days and weeks roll into one for Daryl, he continues reading you journal whenever he can, Carol catches him one day while he is meant to be working on his bike, reading an entry, detailing about your latest kill of a deer you had hunted yourself, how you tracked it and bought it back to the camp. "What's that you got Daryl?" She asks, he looks up at her. "Nothin'" Daryl responds gruffly, grabbing the book and shoving it into his bag. "Nah uh Dixon, you're reading something" The older woman says, smirking "Tell me is it a romance novel? Or a drama novel?" Carol jokes but stops when she takes note of Daryl's face. "It's nothin' like' 'hat" He tries to defend it. "Come on Daryl, tell me" Eventually Daryl gives in and explains what it is exactly. "So there some random girl out there leaving journals around and you just happen to keep finding em?" She asks flipping through the pages, going over them a little. "I find them intriguing ok" He shrugs, carol nods. "I am not judging Daryl, mind if I read the first one?" She asks, he nods and goes inside to retrieve it for her, passing it over to her. "Bring it back, ok?" Daryl asks. He is not too sure why he is protective of your journal, but he was. "I will Daryl don't worry" Carol walks away, her reading the pages already.
He pulls the book back out and continues reading. Entry 24 (I think) "First time eating deer and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was, the men skinned it and got the meat ready for dinner, we are going to try and use the fur for the winter, the kids need new clothing, warm clothing. We are lucky, the meat will feed us for a couple meals, our community is big enough that we won't waste it.  Biter- 60 Human- 6 Animal- 18
Entry 25 (I truly don't know, I have lost track of time)
"Can one truly lose humanity in this world? Can one only kill the dead and let the living free? Where does the line blur for good and bad these days? Where does the line between friend and enemy start? Who is to govern the right and wrong these days? I lay here wondering, so many thoughts go through my mind daily, what we lost from the old days. What are we trying to gain? Is there really a future for the generations that are being born now?"
Daryl wipes his dirty hands on the rag and shuts the book again. He puts it away and places his tools back on the shelves, heading inside to start having dinner.  Going to bed that night, he wonders if you were still out there. Somewhere.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You were running, again, the groans of the undead behind you, but you couldn't stop. Your chest is burning with each breath you took, your legs starting to feel like jelly. You have no doubt blood running down your legs from the stick and branches that have stabbed you while you run but you can't stop, you have to keep running. Your friends scattered to the winds after a horde came through your community. You break through the trees to the road, a car comes speeding down the road, skidding to a stop in front of you, adrenaline that once flowed through you quickly gets replaced with exhaustion as you pass out, your backpack taking most of the fall as they hop out of the car, rushing over to you, the last thing you hear is a male's voice commanding them to load you carefully into the car. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daryl's bike flies down the road, the wind whipping through his dirty hair, he doesn't care, getting out off the walls that keep them safe is something Daryl enjoys.  The truck behind him following him to the next location for scavenging, this destination is almost a 5-day drive one way, but everyone knew they needed to expand further out, so taking the truck for the items was the plan.  This run consisted of Daryl, Carol and Morgan. As night fall came, they used the truck as shelter for the night, Daryl's bike pushed against the side of the truck while Morgan and Carol sat in the back, talking. Daryl sat in the corner, leaning against the cold metal of the truck he used the torch to continue reading. Not really in the mood to socialize. Entry 26-
"I don't know how much longer I can fake happiness. I can't keep pretending like everything is going to be ok. I do it for the kids, they are so scared most days. I hear them crying to their mothers at night, afraid of the darkness, after of the biters. They will learn over time, they will need to learn how to fight to survive. Life wasn't meant to be like this though, not for them." Entry 27-
"Mother Nature gave us a lucky break, with the storm that hit last night, we were able to fill barrels of water, finally we have clean drinking water for the kids. It felt so nice to be able to wash all the dirt and grime off me in that rain, washed my hair, we were able to wash our clothes during the day as the rain hung around.
You never notice how much you truly take for granted till you don't have it. I miss having running water, hot showers, fast food my god I could down a hamburger right now. I miss being able to go out, have fun, go to the movies, even missing shampoo and conditioner. I miss my friends, miss being able to go outside my house without having to fight for my life daily. The rain gave us a chance to be happy, even if it was just for the short time.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You start to stir in the back of the car, you hear voices talking around you. Your eyes flutter open, and you try to sit up. "Woah be careful" A male voice says beside you. You look over at him. "Where am I?" You croak out, the man passes you a bottle of water. You quickly open it and chug it. "You are currently in our vehicle heading back our community, we almost hit you as you rushed out of the woods last night" "Who are you people?"  "My name's Aaron, Michonne and Maggie in the front seat." "I'm Y/N." "Where do you come from?" Michonne asks. "I had a small set up, but a horde of biters came out of no-where and we got spilt up" You explain sadly. "Biters? You mean the walkers?" Maggie says, looking at you quickly You grunt in pain,"Ain't they the same thing?"  "We need to ask you some questions if you don't mind. The first being how many walkers have you killed?" You try to think of how many you might be up to know "I would say around 120ish, I have lost track" "Next question. How many humans have you killed?"  "Ten" You answer.
"Why?" Maggie asks the last question. "The first couple of people, they were out to hurt me, they wanted not only my supplies but my body" You look away ashamed. "One was he didn't want to turn, but he had been bit so I had to put him down before he died. Each person after that I had to do what I needed to survive, to protect the ones within my small community."
They all look at each other, before Maggie focus is back on the road.
"I'm sorry did I say something wrong?" You question them. "No it's not that, you just said you had a small community, we just got a radio call while you were resting saying they found some straggles coming to the gate, we just wondering if perhaps they were some of you folk"
I look out the window to the trees passing us, should I be thankful that there might be some of us left? Aaron passes you back your backpack and smiles. "Why don't you get some rest, we not too far out from our community, we will have the doctor check you over, you have some nasty cuts on your legs, I assume from running" Aaron says, his eyes on the road while Maggie drives. You do just that, you close your eyes and let the sound of the car put you to sleep.

Cooking up this one modern au that wouldn't probably turn out to be something, but it is fun spinning it around my head.
bodyguard!sonetto, celebrity!vertin au.
They were childhood friends but due to life circumstances, both of them got separated, with nothing more but letters and gifts being exchanged over the years. The years go by and the correspondences grow less and distant as the two of them pursue their own careers and grow into their own persons. Sonetto turns to working as a bodyguard after realizing she's pretty good at it, Vertin works in the line of... something, i guess, feel free to throw ideas at me, that shoots her into stardom.
After years the two of them finally cross paths, in a formal reception where Sonetto's working as a bodyguard to some person and Vertin's there because she was invited. Something something they meet, catch up a little, on what's been up to them.
Then at one point Sonetto becomes Vertin's bodyguard and then after all these years she gets to know things about Vertin's life that isn't blared through the media, and somewhere along the way she kinda gets integrated into the little (massive) circle of friends and found family Vertin has picked up along the way. Everyone knows Vertin and she practically knows everyone lmao. She's the guy who knows a guy that knows a guy. Vertin also gets to know what Sonetto's been up to, and finds herself also quickly integrated into Sonetto's own circle.
Pretty fun thinking about what the other characters are doing in this world. Maybe i'll put a list here or something.
Pavia and Lilya are Sonetto's coworkers. Pavia teaches her italian/sicilian on their free time and Lilya's the one to keep nagging her to loosen up
And being coworkers for years Sonetto has been dragged to numerous gatherings courtesy of Lilya that she's a pretty common fixture in the Lilya-Druvis househould. Druvis' younger cousin Sotheby adores her.
Vertin and Sonetto were both orphans in the same orphanage, hence why they know each other.
i'm thinking the incident that takes Sonetto and Vertin away is some fuckery happening with the orphanage (cough cough constantine) causes it to be investigated and dissolved, with the orphans being sent to other ones. This is where the two part ways.
Though some time after that, Vertin gets adopted by everyone's favorite foundation parents, Miss Z and Tooth Fairy. something something the toffees Vertin sends to Sonetto on the mail is courtesy of Tooth Fairy.
Vertin Zhang-Campbell rolls of the tongue nicely.
Sonetto, unfortunately, does not get adopted and ages out of the system, but manages to get a good foothold into adulting by being... Sonetto, ever the diligent overachiever.
I need someone to give me last name ideas for her oh god
Verneider are married. The way they first met is as probably as whirlwind and chaotic as canon verneider, but less... murder and death. They have been happily married for a while : )
Feel like Schneider would be an actor. She is the embodidment of a femme fatale lmao
Anyways verschnetto endgame in my head. idk how it happens but the buildup of the three's dynamic is something like "hey my wife saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe. can we buy you a drink?"
I kinda want Blonney and Horropedia to be a brief fixture here. Both of them are horror afficionados that have made a name for themselves in their specific crafts (movie director and writer) and Sonetto has once bodyguarded them. She did not have a good time (had to sit through a horror-specific awarding ceremony type thing and had to listen to them talk each others ears off. she is forever traumatized.) also a scene im thinking off is that Horropedia off-handedly mentions Vertin, to which Sonetto of course focuses on, but all in all the scene goes like the one tweet about a dentist mentioning their son is captain america's actor but its Tooth Fairy and Vertin lmao

A/N: We are going to get CHAOTIC with this one. So buckle up. 😈
Warnings: SMUT 18+ Content, Swearing, angsty
Word Count: 4k
The Swiss Hockey Federation awards are in the late summer. And every year, Nico begs me at the last minute to come with him. With his good looks and professional hockey career, you would think he would be able to find a true date to go with. But every year, it’s me on his arm. We skip the red carpet, as per usual, and slide into the sleek, modern event space relatively undetected. The room is stunning, decked out in the reds and whites of our national colors. The Swiss flag flies proudly around the room while various projectors showcase the latest and greatest hockey talent Switzerland has to offer.
As an event planner myself, I am quite impressed. This is an detailed, high-end event with waiters trolling the floor carrying small bites and free flutes of champagne. The full, open bar has anything you could want including expensive liquors from all over the world. The bright chandeliers twinkle in the low lighting, complimenting the live jazz music that fills the room. An air of sophistication wafts through and loud laughter rings in my ears as Nico hands me a glass of champagne.
“Thank you.” I say, bringing it to my lips as I scan the room again.
“Expecting someone?” Nico asks, watching my face.
“No.” I lie. “Admiring the details.”
“I’m going to go walk the room. You good?”
“Yeah. Take your time.” I tell him.
Anticipation buzzes in my blood, eye sweeping, looking for a certain Devil who isn’t my brother. I haven’t seen Timo since March. He’s reached out but I’ve put him off, absorbed in work and my friend group. I know he returned to Switzerland weeks ago, but he’s been in and out of the country with his family, spending precious moments with them that he doesn’t get during the season. But that doesn’t mean he’s been far from my thoughts.
I don’t see Timo, but I know he will be here. Every year for the past three years, Timo has been here. I’ve been here. The night always ends the same: frantic lips, desperate hands, and silent screams of pleasure in a nearby closet.
The one just to the left of the women’s bathroom looks like the winner this year.
The moment he arrives, my body knows. My brown eyes wander to him, drinking him in like a parched camel. He’s dressed in a Navy suit and works on buttoning his jacket again after the red carpet. He has dark, sexy stubble lining his jaw and upper lip. I want to know what that feels like between my thighs. I push out a controlled breath, feeling my core tremble as he rubs a hand along his cheek, then inspects the room. I watch him find my brother. He sees Nico alone and furrows his brow, running his tongue along the inside of his mouth. He heads right to him, extending a hand and shaking it with his easy smile. He looks good tonight. Everything about him pulls me in. I’m yearning to feel his skin, tanned from his trip to Italy, beneath my finger prints.
Nico and Timo talk for a few minutes while I watch. Timo lets out a loud laugh, head tilting back towards the ceiling. It flows through the air to me, lodging in my chest, soothing some of the missing him. Nico gestures to his left, then turns, looking right at me. I freeze as Timo’s gaze finds me. Excitement fills his face. He gives me a smile followed by a brief, friendly wave that has butterflies growing in my abdomen. When Nico turns away, Timo tosses me a wink. It’s brief. Anyone else would have missed it, but it’s been the agreement I’ve been waiting for.
Tonight, we’ll play another round of desperate roulette. Winner picks the tempo.
As the night drags on, I visit with various players, running around with my brother until I bore of the same conversation over and over again. Yes- Jersey is great. Yes, the team is getting better. Yes, its so funny how it’s become Switzerland of the West. Ha, ha, ha. Bleh. I don’t know how Nico does it. But, he’s always been sweet, charming, and attentive. It’s what makes him a great captain.
The one person we don’t go see is Timo. It’s all part of our game. When Nico and I get close, he moves along to the other side of the room. There, his gaze drags along my skin, spreading wildfire through me and an ache that I’m getting desperate for him to cure.
I’m on my third glass of champagne when I perch myself perfectly in Timo’s view. Lust fills my cheeks and lips as he strokes the glass of his drink, rubbing at the condensation while chatting with Kevin Fiala. If I close my eyes, I can imagine that same thumb rubbing against my throbbing clit. My teeth tease my lip wondering how much longer it’s going to take for him to make his move. Nico is drawing closer and closer to me again. The night is seemingly winding down after speeches and awards. I worry our time is running out.
Kevin disappears with his wife from the bar, but Timo remains. He glances over his shoulder in my direction, a small smirk tilting his lips at seeing me staring at him.
Here we go.
He pushes up, turning my way when a petite blonde with bursting cleavage intercepts him. My eyes narrow slightly. She’s ruining my night. I look towards my bother who is in conversation just to the left of me now. Shit. I contemplate how to get him further away while watching Timo from across the room. The blonde is closer now, absorbed, watching his mouth. Her fingers brush the jacket of his suit. I suddenly feel hot, but not in a good way.
It’s a different twist in my core now. Shades of green and ugly- about to rear into something I haven’t felt this intensely before.
The woman tosses her hair like she’s in a shampoo commercial, giggling at him. I jut my jaw out in irritation. She is so fake. And plastic. I bet she’s stuffed with fillers to hide from her insecurities. So unattractive. Yet… he’s looking at her like he’s interested? Is this what he picks when I’m not around? Yuck.
She calls out to the bartender who tosses her a white napkin on the bar top. She takes out her lipstick from her purse, red and deep just how I know he likes it. It’s almost the exact shade I picked tonight, just for him. She sketches what must be her number onto the napkin. Then, she places it in his hand, letting her fingers linger, taking stock of his curiosity. I stiffen, watching as she places her red lips against his cheek, then slide to his ear to whisper parting words.
My cheeks sting like he slapped me when he stuffs the napkin into his pocket. He knows I’m here, watching, and he did that? He could have tossed it on the bar. He could have let it accidentally drift to the floor from his hand. He could have not taken it at all. He should have don’t that. Instead, he’s saving it for later. My fingers almost smash the flute in my hand when I see his eyes soaking in her ass as she walks away.
And in that moment, I am decidedly done with this night.
“Can we go?” I interrupt my brother’s conversation next to me. “My feet hurt.” I point down to the black Jimmy Choos he bought for me last Christmas.
“I told you not to wear those.” He rolls his eyes. Truthfully, he doesn’t seem too disappointed at the prospect of leaving.
“You’re right as per usual.” I shrug, pacifying him so we will leave.
“I’m going to go say goodbye to Josi. I didn’t get to him earlier.” Nico hands me the valet ticket. “Have them grab the car.”
I stalk from the room before Timo can get to me. If he’s coming, I don’t know. I stopped looking when his eyeballs were glued to a sequined ass that wasn’t mine.
I’m standing at the valet podium when the man in question extends his vehicle ticket to the remaining valet. The employee walks off towards the parking lot, leaving us alone.
“Hi.” His voice is warm rolling over the bare skin of my shoulders to blanket me. One word and he makes me want to bury my face in the side of his neck.
“Hi.”
“Do I get to see you tonight?” He asks
Some fucking audacity. My eyes squint as I stare forward.
“No. But I’m sure the girl who’s number is on that napkin in your pocket is available.”
“Oooo.” He chuckles. “Careful, Em, you sound a little jealous.” I turn my icy stare on him. No words pass between us because we both know I am. “Ask nicely and I’ll come over.”
“I’m not begging for shit.” I snap back. He observes my anger, softening with his approach.
“You really don’t have to. I’m more than willing. You look so beautiful tonight.” He reaches his hand out to slide along the small of my back. His touch caresses like it belongs there. I close my eyes, jaw tightening as I resist the pull I feel to give in. “All I wanted was to be across the room with you. Be that glass you held all night.”
“Fooled me.” I snip. Damn him and his compliments.
“We were just talking.” Timo says. I turn to face him, demeanor still cold. “I’m out here with you, no?” My eyes drag along his suit jacket, stopping at the button holding it together. “I’m trying to end the night tasting the sweetest parts of you.” He reaches up, fingering the diamond stud in my ear that was a gift from him.
“I’m really not in the mood.” My teeth are tight from the tension. Timo’s fingers pause on my lobe until he slowly drops his hand back to his side.
“Why are you mad at me when I’m the one who hasn’t heard from you in months? I texted you earlier this week asking if you were going to be here and you ignored me.” His thick eyebrows pull together in annoyance. “I didn’t even know you were here until your brother told me.”
“It’s not your business where I am in the world.”
“It’s not?”
“No, you’re not my boyfriend.”
“Not by my choice.” My nostrils flare at his pointed tone.
“If I need to get crystal clear with you, I will. We’re never going to be together.”
“Yeah, because you’re fucking scared.” He scoffs, rolling his eyes at me.
“No. I’m not giving up my entire life for you so that you can have all your dreams come true while I’m just your trophy wife. Staying silent and pretty is not the life for me.” I whirl my hands about. “Plus, your behavior tonight just shows how incapable you are of loving me the way I deserve. You want options and I’m not going to share you.” Even to my own ears, I sound scared and unsure of what I’m saying. Like its a bunch of rapid fire excuses to deflect from how badly I want him right now.
“Behavior? I didn’t do anything wrong.” He spits out. “You just told me I’m not your boyfriend, so why does it matter who’s number I take?” He holds his hands out to the sides exasperated. “And I never asked you to give anything up for me. You’re making this all or nothing because you’re too damn chicken to try. I told you in Jersey that I want this. You were the one who ghosted me for months.” His chest is rising and falling rapidly. “That fucking hurts, Em.”
Tears fill my eyes as I dig my teeth into my bottom lip. I peel my gaze away from him, trying to regain my composure. Footsteps fall heavily behind us belonging to my brother.
“You’re leaving too?” Nico asks Timo as he comes between us. Nico snuck up on us, but a quick glance at his lax posture makes me believe he has no idea about us.
“Uh..” Timo clears his throat, stepping back, balling his hands into fists in frustration. “Yeah, early training tomorrow.”
“Bummer. Was going to say you should come over for a drink.” I hold my breath in anticipation of Timo’s answer.
“Nah, I shouldn’t.” He says as the valet comes forward with Nico’s car. Disappointment rattles in my stomach. Even as I want the distance, telling myself I don’t need this, I crave him.
“Next time.” Nico extends his hand for Timo to shake. I begin to walk forward without acknowledging Timo.
“It was great seeing you, Emma.” I toss a look at him over my shoulder. I can see the hurt in his blue eyes. I know I should say something to keep the act up, but I can’t. Instead, I slide into the passenger seat without another word.
Nico allows the silence for a few minutes on our drive home.
“You seem upset.”
“I’m just tired.” I toss a small, appeasing smile to him. His eyes don’t leave the road, but he sighs like he doesn’t believe me.
- - -
I’m outside.
Timo’s text comes through just as I settle against my pillows to sleep. I’m utterly exhausted after such a whirlwind night. I decide to ignore him, tossing my phone onto the other pillow and turning the lamp off. Light from my screen fills my room a minute later.
Come out here or I’m coming in.
Well. Can’t have that.
I toss my covers off begrudgingly, moving as quietly as I can down to the front door. I carefully tip toe out of the house, looking down the driveway to where Timo’s car purrs in the street, somewhat hidden by the trees and bushes. As I walk further down, I can see Timo outside the car, leaning against the driver’s side tire.
“Get in the car, Em.” He says as I approach. He takes in my matching pajama set of red shorts and an old, navy t-shirt.
“No.”
“Yes.” His jaw visibly tightens at my defiance.
“Or what?”
My body shakes from the chill of the mountain air. I underestimated how cool it was without the summer sun.
“Or, I’m going to drag you back inside and fuck you so hard we wake up your brother.” Whoa, this is new.
“Shh.” I hiss, stepping forward. I glare at him as I walk around the car and put myself into the back seat. He gives me a tired look. “You didn’t say where to sit.”
“You’re being such a brat.” He rubs angrily at his forehead, mumbling under his breath as he slams his door shut. He begins to drive, weaving with the road towards a hidden park down the street from home. He tosses the car in park, then comes into the back seat with me. I stare straight ahead. “You don’t get to act like this.”
“I’m not acting like anything.”
“You’re playing games with me. You’re all jealous because I took some girl’s number, then telling me we’re never going to be together? Which one is it? It doesn’t get to be both.”
“Fine. Fuck whoever you want then.” I snap. “I don’t care.”
“You don’t?” He snarls, grabbing my face with his hand. “It would be fine if I was balls deep in someone else tonight?” I wince from his words and he softens his grip instantly. “I’m sorry. I’m.. so sorry. I need you to… stop doing this to me. You’re driving me crazy, baby.” My eyes close when he murmurs the pet name. I get weak when he calls me that. “Acting like you don’t care and then getting all hot and jealous. Throwing tantrums and glaring at me before your eyes go dark, silently begging me to take you right in front of your brother.” He strokes his thumb along my cheek. I wrap my hand around his neck.
“Fuck me.” I tell him this time. “Right here. Please.” The rapid change between us is fitting and he takes it in stride.
“Thought you weren’t going to beg.” He reminds me, placing kisses along my throat, working down towards my chest.
“I don’t care. I just need you.” I confess as his fingers slide up my t-shirt, skirting along the soft skin of my abdomen. “So bad.” I whimper as he sucks against my collar bone.
“I don’t have anything.” He tells me, kissing sloppily over towards my ear. He pulls me into his lap after his confession. I contemplate, knowing we both know I’m on the pill. It’s a risk- I know it is. I hesitate, pulling back to look at his face. He pauses his movements, getting soft and serious as he holds my neck. “I’m clean. I’d never do anything that would hurt you.”
I believe him. Because he looks at me like he’s in love with me and it matches the yearning in my chest for him too. He could be anywhere else right now. Instead, he chose me.
“I trust you.” I whisper. “I’m good.”
“No one since me?” He asks the thing we always ask even though it hurts. I shake my head no. “Me either.” I smile against his lips on mine.
The feeling of our bare skins connecting has electric groans coming from our lips.
“You feel so good. So fucking wet.” He moans, putting his forehead between my breasts. “I’m not going to last. Can’t.” He moans again, louder this time as I rock on him.
“Good.” I whine as he strokes my clit. He watches my face as I bounce on him, thick eyebrows pulling down in pleasure as I ride. I’m not surprised at how quickly the tension begins to leak from us.
“Baby, where should I cum?” He groans after what feels like seconds.
“Right where you are.” I plea, working my hips into him faster. I grind harder against his hand, moaning loudly when his lips work my nipple over with the right strokes. “T-T- Ah.” I sob as I come, clenching him tightly in hard pulses until he shoots ribbons inside of me. The feeling of him in my heat, leaking, has my heart constricting in my chest. It’s so intimate it aches.
“Mmm.” He moans against my breast. His hot breath dances against my wet nipple, making me tremble more in his arms. I thread my fingers through his hair, tugging the strands so his head falls back into my palm. I place my mouth, wet and hungry, over his, sucking his tongue into mine. I rotate my hips, feeling him ooze more into me. “You are… incredible.” He whispers when we pull apart to gasp in air.
Our soft smooches fill the car, coming down gradually from our hasty high, savoring the taste and feel of each other.
“You deserve better than this.” He eventually speaks against my shoulder. “You should be in my bed, 800 thread count sheets hugging your beautiful curves. Or a luxury apartment building where you can look at New York City while I fuck you from behind. Not this.” He gestures to the back seat of his car, where our heads are awkwardly avoiding the roof. I turn to bury my nose into his shoulder again.
“I can’t leave my life here.” I whisper against his hot skin.
“What is here that I can’t give you? Events are everywhere.”
“I have a client base that can’t be recreated anywhere.”
“I have connections. So does your brother. We can build you something new in America. Maybe even better?” Irritation pops my bubble. Why is he pressing this again?
“You can’t just create something new that fits with what you want and think that’s payment for leaving my life behind. My answer is still the same.” I say, pushing off of him. His softening dick flops out of me quickly. I grimace at the feeling of his cum sliding out.
“Why are you arguing against everything I’m trying to do to make this work?” He asks me, holding his hands out to the side in question.
I can’t really put words together to answer him. It’s just a dreaded feeling in my soul of following someone else, somewhere else, and getting lost in their world. Never mind that I’m in love with him. I feel my body jolt at the new, inner thought and pull myself farther away from him. It’s terrifying to love someone like him. Someone that proved tonight he could have his pick of anyone else. The temptation is so much. I know enough from Nico to not want to sign up for this.
“Don’t do this.” He mutters. “Just.. sit here for a second. I want to talk.”
My afterglow has been shattered by his questions. I stretch my neck to the side, wincing at the way it tightens back up immediately under the weight of my head. He reaches out to kneed at my tense muscles, thumbs putting firm pressure where it’s needed most.
“We already talked about this earlier tonight. Why can’t you just let this be enough?” I gesture between our bodies.
“I thought you were only saying that because you were mad…” He questions.
“No. I meant it.”
“You’re not even willing to try?”
“It seems pointless.” I shrug. Unwillingly, my mind cuts out pictures of that life. City dates in New York, wearing his last name on a WAG jacket, and waking up next to him in the morning, not needing to run away. Maybe a ring.. eventually a baby or two. There’s that ache in my chest again.
Timo is silent next to me. Carefully, fingers dragging along every inch of me, he begins to pull away. First his fingers fall from around my neck. Then, he slowly moves his other hand from my bare thigh. He works himself back into his pants as I wiggle my shorts into place. The only noise between us is his belt hooking back into place.
Until…
“Emma, I can’t.” He pauses. “I can’t do this anymore.” It’s quiet and questioning, like he doesn’t want to say or mean it.
“Okay.” I pick at my thumb nail. I’ve heard this before. It never lasts.
“No, I’m serious. I love you.” The blood slows in my veins. He’s never said those words to me before and I wish it wasn’t this way. “And I can’t have only parts of you anymore. It’s not enough.” Something about his voice makes my heart drop into my stomach. Panic forces my blood to begin racing through my veins again.
He pops the back door open. Hair stands up straight on the back of my neck, jolting when the door shuts again. My body trembles as he gets into the driver’s seat. The car roars to life. I adjust my shirt back into place and tuck my hair behind my ears as he drives. I purse my lips together, looking at him in the rearview mirror. He won’t return my gaze but his flickering jaw tells me he knows I’m looking.
The house comes into view. Timo throws the car in park at the end of the driveway. The interior of the car smells like sex. I can feel my raw folds coated with his sticky seed, still remembering his thrusts. Tears poke my eyes when he refuses to meet my gaze. I have no choice but to get out of the car. Isn’t this what I want anyway? I can’t ignore the way my heart cracks when I pop the door to step out.
I turn back, expecting him to get out of the car with me. To say something else. He doesn’t. And he doesn’t wait for me to get to the house.
Instead, he drives off into the night, red tail lights blazing until they disappear into darkness.
I won’t see him again until November, under much different circumstances.

Miroctane Week
Day 4 - Memory
Octavio made his way up the short, narrow pathway, forcing himself to not pay too much attention to the overgrown flower beds as he passed them by. He could just about make out the outline of a figure through the front window, moving around at a practised pace and he let out a sigh of relief. At least he wouldn’t be alone in this. He’d never been here without Elliott before.
He slid the key his partner had given him into the door’s lock, letting himself into the trickster’s childhood home, swearing quietly to himself as he bumped the large bouquet he was carrying against the doorframe, helplessly watching as a collection of orange petals fell to the floor. He hadn’t even noticed he’d also somehow managed to crumple the decorative paper surrounding the flower's stems, and for a moment was secretly glad Elliott wasn’t here to see it.
The nurse smiled politely at him as he entered the living room. “Look who came to see you, Evelyn!” she said in a cheery tone. Octavio clenched the flowers’ stems a little tighter when Evelyn didn’t turn to acknowledge his presence; the telltale sign that she wasn’t having a good day. He nodded curtly to the nurse as she passed by him to enter the kitchen, quietly saying something about next week’s medication.
Octavio took that as his cue to approach the cosy armchair Evelyn was sitting in, crouched down beside it, and laid the bouquet in her lap. “Um…Elliott got held up at work, so he asked me to bring these over. He said he’ll come by tomorrow.” The gift seemed to catch her attention and she smiled, delicately running her fingers over the flowers’ faces. “Marigolds,” she hummed softly, and Octavio nodded. “He said he picked them especially for today.” “They’re lovely.”
The runner stood, curiously approaching a nearby shelf to inspect the few birthday cards decorating it, though he didn’t recognise the signatures inside. Elliott had decided to bring his mother’s 'main' birthday gift and card to her tomorrow, but didn’t want her to receive nothing on her birthday, so Octavio had been given the task of picking up the bouquet he’d ordered and delivering it.
If he was honest, he felt out of place being here without the trickster. Evelyn had always been kind to him since he and Elliott had begun their relationship, but they’d never spent time alone like this before. He knew about her condition, but hadn’t really seen it at its worst. He began to wonder if he should just leave, until a framed photograph on the shelf caught his eye.
He picked it up and chuckled, his eyes scanning over the image of Elliott, holding a fan-voted award for some tabloid magazine. It was a great picture, despite the actual award not being anything impressive. “I have this picture too,” Octavio said, carrying the frame to Evelyn. “He got me a smaller version to put in my wallet. But I didn’t know how to tell him I don’t ever use a wallet.” “Oh, isn’t he handsome?” she replied, turning her attention away from the photograph and towards Octavio. “Is he a friend of yours?”
Octavio felt his heart skip a beat. He wasn’t sure if he should correct her or not, or if that would just make her more confused. He took the frame from her and set it on the side table and tried to draw her attention back to the bouquet. “Should we, uh, put these in some water or something?” “Oh, yes. I wonder if there is a vase around here,” Evelyn said, lifting the flowers to her face to give them an appreciative sniff. “Oh, look! There’s even a little card in here that says, hmm…’happy birthday’! We’ll have to ask someone whose birthday it is." “I’ll go and see if I can find something to put them in,” Octavio said, taking the opportunity to back out of the situation.
He made his way back out into the hallway, and exhaled deeply. He was beginning to feel glad that Elliott wasn’t here. Seeing Evelyn like this on today of all days would break his heart. However, at the same time, he couldn’t help but wish that he was here. A selfish thought, he knew, but he couldn’t deny that he was feeling out of his depth.
As if he knew he was being thought of, Octavio’s phone began to buzz, with Elliott’s name and photograph illuminating the screen. “Hello?” “Hey, babe. Did you get to mom’s okay?” His fingers instinctively moved to toy with the key inside his pocket. “Yeah, I remembered where to go.” Elliott seemed to let out a content sigh on the other end of the phone. “Did she like the flowers?”
Octavio peeked his head around the doorframe, looking into the living room where Evelyn was sitting in her chair, exactly how he’d left her, with the bouquet of flowers still resting securely in her lap. “Yeah, amor. I, uh, think she really loved them.” “Great! If she…Aw, crap. I’m gonna have to go. Delivery’s coming in. But tell her I’ll see her tomorrow, okay?”
Octavio nodded, as if his partner could see it and hung up the call. He collected the old, painted pot from the side-table by the door, deciding it looked enough like a vase to do the job, briefly filling it in the bathroom before returning to the living room. “Will this be okay for the flowers?” he asked, prompting Evelyn to smile up at him. “That…Yes, perfect.”
She graciously passed the bouquet to Octavio, watching as he placed it by the window, the early evening light making the petals' hues appear a little brighter. “Marigolds. How beautiful they are,” Evelyn hummed. “You know, my boys…E-Elon, was it? One of them…made that pot for my last birthday.”
“Oh, cool,” Octavio replied, trying to not pay too much attention to the aging, chipped paint. “Did, um…Elliott help him?” “Elliott?” she chuckled, a fondness to her tone. “My little inchworm. He should be home soon. You know he works at that new…what was it. The water place. I think you’ll like him. He’s a real sweetheart.”
Octavio couldn’t ward off the sheepish laugh that escaped him. It wasn’t the memory he’d hoped she’d have of his partner, but it was something. “I think you might be right,” he said, sitting down on the sofa across from her. “I have a feeling he’s a great guy.”

August 20th 2024 12:33pm
I stopped writing on this blog for a bit to award some situations I was going through some privacy. I am retracting that and will never ever ever again mute myself for the sake of others.
I dont even know where to begin. I feel so angry which is a given.
Let write this all out so therapy can be easier and organized friday.
When grace and I broke up a month ago and she posted all that fucking slander - we did not stop talking. Hell we were still intimate. So while she was talking all her shit around town and telling a certain story we were fucking in her bed. Can you tell im over this lmao? There is no shame to be dealt here. We are two people who have the unfortunate fate to always feel a pull and a certain type of love for each other. Shaming any couple for trying to figure out themselves at this young age is fucking weird. I think everyone who has had SO MUCH to say about two people that are not them just prove they can only speak when it benefits themselves. Im saying this all now because I wanted to be respectful and give us the chance to try and work things out no matter the outcome. So I ignored all the fucked up shit. This of course fucked me up mentally and her as well. We tossed no contact back and forth to allow ourselves to heal and about two or three weeks ago I finally decided to uphold it and blocked her on everything. We still had ways to check in on each other indirectly but we did not speak or communicate directly at all. It started working.
About two weeks ago I started hanging out with someone who I met through a mutual friend a while back and recently (talking days lmao) we became lovers. I was RACKED WITH GUILT over it for a day or two. I felt dumb and I was afraid Grace would find out. Turns out it doesnt even matter because she took a lover herself mere days after no contact. Rebounds are just where it's at I guess. Its fun and goofy and silly and something nice I hold dear. I feel bad because I am so closed off. He reminds me a lot of Adam from the Bible because of a rib reference that we have. I am also leaving thank god in a couple months and at this point might not come back.
Grace and I took time apart and chilled the fuck out. Saturday we followed each other again on socials and we are 100% civil. WE STILL ARE. Saturday I have a movie night with Jo and we watch A Walk to Remember and I cried like 4 times lmao. Adam from the Bible goes out that night and I do not join but I do offer to pick him up when he done. Long story short I go to fetch him from bluepost and say hi to a couple of mutual friends we have and as we are getting ready to leave Grace shows up. I havent seen her in a couple weeks so I immediately feel sick to my stomach. My best friend Bay is with her and she sees me and we go to the bathroom. When I come out Grace asks to talk and we go smoke together and I am a nervous wreck. I am always nervous around Grace because I seem to be the only one who understand the power she holds over me. We smoke and small talk and it's fine. I go back in to fetch Adam from the Bible and as I am, Grace's best friend's wife, Alexis, rushes me while I am standing with my group and started yelling at me. I do not remember what she says but I say something like "I am not going to fight you girl" and some other person is pulling her back and she rushes me again and I shove her back and she tries to swing and then the bouncer drag her outta there. Grace comes to check on me a couple times - tells me she loves me and I get upset about that and leave with Adam from the Bible. My quick 10 minute pick up turned into a 20 minutes ordeal. But I mean, of course right.
Alexis is upset with me because I referenced her abuse and adultery on my blog a month ago. I did not name names but used her as an example of someone who cheats that our friend group tolerates. Now, I don't fucking care to keep that to myself. Is she wants to post things about me on her story then all is fair game now!! I personally think since such a large group knows and does nothing about it then why should I be the crypt keeper. All this info I have is from Myah and Grace so the reality of the situation of their marriage is none of my business and the only real opinion I have about it is that I hope Myah gets away from her. Myah has always been such good person in my eyes and I really just want her to get outta that. That stems from the information I was given and my interactions with them personally. Of course I don't know their inner workings. She has sent me some choice dm's which I will post now since she decided to publicly assault me lmao.
Tumblr media
This was after her lovely exchanging of words and a sloshing of one drink on my jeans. Note the child reference which is where we get into the part where I become angry.
Monday I get a call mid work day. It's DSS. On Sunday someone reported me to CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES. They claimed I leave Olive home ALONE to go get drunk at the bars and that I make him run laps around my house as punishment.
Where to even fucking begin with this petty bullshit. Of course by law I cannot know who submitted the report. I am assuming it's Alexis because of the timeline of events and she has the information needed. It could also be Ava who has been attempting to make herself relevant again by posting things about me on her story and harassing my sister at the bars. I think she misses that the most attention she ever got was when I exposed her for LYING ABOUT BEING AN ORPHAN, GRADATING COLLEGE, AND BEING STALKED BY HER EXGIRLFRIEND LMAO. Ava you fat grotesque waste of space here is your acknowledgement, here is what you want. I am publicly acknowledging Ava!! If you ever see me out and try to fight me like you claim you will I will simply just run away because the image of you trying to move your fat beefy limbs at any speed above whatever it takes to feed your face so you have energy to continue lying will taste much sweeter than just pulling out your clip in extensions and beating the fuck out of you. Cheers to being relevant for another 3 days if even that. You telling Grace that you know who made the false report but you are not telling is so manipulative and just a lie. You just are ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A WAY IN. God you are so gross!! You only hate me because I caught you in your web of lies. You are a retched terrible person!
Here is to whoever did this:
I do not post Olive and I RARELY speak about him publicly. THIS IS WHY. It's been me and Olive since the beginning. His bio dad does not know our address or where we live. Because you decided to be a dumb petty jealous cunt and report me to CPS thinking it was some cute joke they have to attempt to contact him to let him know there was a report. We are AFRAID OF HIM. Were you trying to inconvenience me? or even worse if you are trying to ruin my life and out of what? Beef? You really truly in your heart of hearts think of yourself in such a high manner that you put me and Olive's safety in jeopardy? I hope to god you did not fully understand the consequences of your actions. My 5 year old having to speak to a CPS agent. I was a CPS kid. You never forget that shit.
You as a full grown adult are pulling a CHILD INTO YOUR OWN ONE SIDED DRAMA WITH ME??? Does it piss you off that I don't give a fuck about you? Is that what it is? That I do not respond to your dms or your shit talking. Being such a jealous vindictive person over the fact that I just live my life and don't give a fuck about what anyone says or thinks about me???
You wasted that poor agents time. The report is being dismissed you literal fucking idiot. She has actual real cases to worry about and you wasted her time.
Anyways. Not only did I and Jolie, Brooke, my therapist, not deserve this but OLIVE did not. After the breakup I stopped writing on this blog, I stopped posting on my story about personal stuff, I stopped reaching out to Grace, I stopped going out on the weekends. I kept to my fucking self and guess what. You fucking people do not care. Instead of celebrating someone who does not fit into the wilmy norm fucks you all just hate it. I might be locally hated but anyone who has ever come to me with their shit we have worked out on the spot. I'm not some evil sorceress who lives in a cave overlooking the town. I just do not fucking care about what you have to say or think about me. TRY IT.
I am so very fucking sorry that my normal ass existence bothers your equally normal and boring existence as well. God how absolutely fucking flattering it is to mean this much to basically strangers. A lot of people view me as some sort of entertainment which I get because I am vocal and I don't let people just get away with bashing.
Instead of being so fucking "scared" of me or whatever you cucks say trying joining me or just leaving me the fuck alone lmao.
Ive made all my social media private and have removed anyone I simply just don't fuck with. This blog will stay public and I will continue to write whatever the fuck I want and how I want to write it. Start your own fucking blog if you hate this one so much.
Noting that this is all so fresh and this is being written out of pure disgust and anger. Im usually all fun and games and gossip but you fucking freaks brought my FAMILY into your boring petty lives so congratulations.

Review: MilkMaid Merchant’s debut indie single ‘Friends’ offers a dreamy respite from the chaos of the world, reflecting on the isolation of adulthood
Multi-Instrumentalist Derry Creaney just began his own solo music endeavours, now known to the world as MilkMaid Merchant, an indie project that draws inspiration from artists like Mac Demarco and Vacations. With past work as a music technician for Rock legends Nazarath, Mercury Award Nominees Glasvegas & Scottish Newcomers Shambolics, Derry might be fresh on his own path but he’s certainly got the talent to back it up.
Debuting his first ever single under MilkMaid Merchant, Derry delivers an easy-going offering in the form of ‘Friends.’ Sure to put you at an instant ease, the haze of sound quickly embraces you as you press play, a soft and secure bundle of honest thought tied to gentle instrumental notes. From slowly thudding drums to a bright, relaxed electric guitar riff and at the heart, deep intermittent bass twangs, ‘Friends’ begins to unwind through your headphones as the retreat you didn’t know you needed. Derry’s vocals soon accompany the opening verse with a similar sense of repose, lightly unwinding through a range that sits suitably lulled with a few moments of fleeting higher nods to match the dreamy atmosphere.
Offering a respite from the chaotic nature of the world, the simplistic sounds and sincere lines push forward together, an entwined performance that’s just as comforting as a much-needed embrace from someone you love. Picking up only lightly for the choruses shift, ‘Friends’ adds backing vocal ooh’s and distant but enchanting synth bursts, all the while the other instruments raise just a little louder into focus. The pre-established sense of relief isn’t lost though, maintaining that staple laid-back energy that’s infectious in the best way.
Stepping aside from the whimsical sound, ‘Friends’ carries through it a message that’s a little weightier, centred around experiences of isolation and the feeling of not belonging. From the opening line ‘I live my life on the sidelines’, Derry establishes that he’s a bit of an outsider looking in, always yearning to be a part of something but never welcomed into anything. As he continues to admit that he’s ‘locked up all alone, with nobody to hold’ , there’s a definite sense of both self-pity and longing for company, feeling so miserably alone yet incapable of changing that. The fear of losing time and making no progress is equally prominent, trapped in the same rooms with the same dreary routine: ‘clock is laughing is my face.’
The chorus quite heartily changes perspective though, beaming ‘that’s okay ‘cause I’m with you’, with Derry pulling himself out of the rut he’s fallen within, allowing himself the realisation that there are people who care. As we all journey further into adulthood, so much of ‘Friends’ cannot help but resonate in its realities of growing older. Finding that those around us are often too busy with work and daily chores to pour the energy they want into their loved ones, ‘Friends’ truly speaks out about how everyone is left to feel a little bit isolated in their own bubble of existence, but if we reach out to those we love they’re still often there to give a hand to hold.
Between melancholic lines and hopeful choruses, as well as a sound that’s all-around quite soft and safe, ‘Friends’ really pens something worth listening to. Whether it be to take a moment to calm down, or as a reminder that even in your lowest moments there are people who care and that can relate, it’s worth playing for yourself here.

Margot Robbie did a fine job in Barbie and I do enjoy watching her performance, but the role itself just wasn't that…interesting? It didn't give her all that much to do. And yes, ha ha, real life imitating art with the man getting nominated, but giving the lead actress an award nod just because she's a woman in the feminism 101 movie isn't great either.
The things the author suggests should be rewarded - defying all critical expectations, making moviegoing fun again, and the message about women having to work twice as hard - are not things the best actress category is about, as far as I know. (which isn't far, because I quit watching awards shows before I even joined facebook, and I quit facebook years back)
I'd imagine those are more things for the best picture category. Maybe screenplay. Editing? Costume? Those kinds of categories as well, depending. But not necessarily actor. Again, though, what do I know.
Something, I suppose, because Barbie does have a Best Picture, nomination. And adapted screenplay (yeah, I bristled at that, too, but it does fit with the usual way things are sorted, even if I'd quibble with that usual way).
Oh, shit, they got a costume design and production design nomination as well. Maybe I'm not as clueless as I assumed (to be clear, I hadn't seen this article when I wrote everything above this paragraph).
Now, it should be added that Gerwig and Robbie were nominated — just not for best director and best actress. Gerwig got a nod for best adapted screenplay for the film, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. And Robbie's work as executive producer, for which she is up for Best Picture, included convincing Mattel to take real risks in how the character and the company was portrayed.
Oh wait, what? You mean, they are actually being recognized for some of the work they did? Damn.
And I want to really emphasize that we are talking about the Academy Awards, right? Like, the Olympics for movies, I guess. As in, few even get to that level of recognition/competition, let alone get nominated, let alone win.
So when you have a single movie hoovering nominations, there are that many more projects that don't even get into the running. So. Yano. Just to keep things in perspective here.
Back to Robbie's performance - it's not that she wasn't good, but there wasn't much there there. Barbie was the character around which the movie revolved, so her purpose was mostly to...be. I believe Robbie very much has the range for a Best Actress Oscar. This role, though? Not so much.
You know what role in Barbie did have that range more than the titular lead? Gloria. She's the one who delivered the fucking feminist monologue.
Actually, we can continue the art copies life copies art reading of the situation: the outrage over Ken getting a nom when Barbie didn't has completely overshadowed America Ferrera's nomination altogether. A white woman did not receive the praise many felt she'd earned by simply existing and being pretty while the recognition of a Latina's hard work gets handwaved away as a "nice, but." Sure, it's nice that the woman who absolutely nailed the most relatable part in the movie gets nominated, but it doesn't matter as much because Barbie herself did not. And yes, a lot of that Robbie snub outrage is because Ryan Gosling did get a nod. But folks are pissed about the lack of a nomination itself as well.
This is already way too long and I haven't touched on the Best Director part yet. Though there isn't nearly as much for me to say, either. I don't know why the Academy didn't pick Gerwig over someone else who got nominated. I can't argue it wasn't a decision based in misogyny.
What I can, and do, take issue with is the LA Times writer's need to be awful about the other projects in her attempt to somehow prove Gerwig was being unfairly treated. And doing so while tying in the historic nomination of a Native American actress is just bad. Especially considering the horrid smallpox joke and absolutely pointless Mount Rushmore gag that made it all the way through to Barbie's final product. (seriously, though, did nobody say anything? or did gerwig & co just overrule?)
The state of feminism right now makes me sad and tired and articles like this are doing nothing to help. Barbie shouldn't have been seen as revolutionary by so many of my friends, and yet. I can't believe we've managed to get to a place where I long for the fucking 90s.

Episode 9: "What in in the tattooed baby Jesus tap-dancing through frozen-over hell just happened?"—eman
Tumblr media
In this round: a Popularity Contest finally gives some clues about where allegiances lie; Super Sleuth Steven reveals to Alex and Kaleigh that Jack and Champ know each other (cue an audible gasp); Michael got the only game advantage at the merge feast which clues him in to a powerful advantage at the Auction; eman unexpectedly gives up immunity to Tony and is outed as being in six alliances; and a double tribal and a Full Transparency Advantage play by Raffy sows chaos, leaving Raffy and Steven in the dust
Raffy
Last night, after tribal, people ended up staying on call. It was Steven, Kaleigh, Alex, Colin, Eman, and I. Zee and Jack were there, but they left earlier. I felt really good about those 6 people if I am being honest. We vibed really well together. I am hoping that this can be an alliance in the near future because I feel it could be a really strong group.
I am so excited for Steven to be back. I may have been a little too excited since that could easily be read as a duo, but I don't particularly care. He's back and I'm happy. I definitely think I will be working with Steven.
Right now, my next targets for tribal council are Kolby and Tony. I just feel like Kolby is very paranoid and strategic meaning he'd be a wildcard of a player. Tony, meanwhile, I just don't really know. Like, he's a person I've never been on a tribe with at this point.
Jack
youtube
Colin
what COWARDS use a RANDOMIZER during a POPULARITY CONTEST challenge?????
Kaleigh
ok. so. astyn ended up going home 5-1 (michael). zee wants raffy out. steven wants kolby out. OH AND STEVEN’S BACK. uh so we have a redemption island situation. steven came back with the vote info, who voted what, who lost their votes, etc. so we know zee and champ didn’t use their extra votes and that colin voted michael. champ had told me that she had to use her vote at the last tribal, so i was likeee ok she lied??? when i saw she didn’t use it. but apparently bc we merged before she went to tribal its just a regular extra vote now. but i didn’t learn that till after i messaged her asking for my vote back LMAOO she is fully avoiding me, took over 24 hours to respond but was at the auction and the challenge just regular degular!
at the auction i won some food which gave me a hint to the idol and also told everyone i won a hint to the idol. luckily no one’s asked me about it… but this idol hunt is soooo scary. i hate it. then i ended up being a finalist for popularity contest and in the position to pick between eman and colin. i trust eman more than colin AND thought i’d be less likely to win against eman so i picked eman but not without an award-winning performance pretending i was using a randomizer. i mean i was going to but then i couldn’t find the button on the website. ANYWAY.
so eman and i tied when everyone had to vote for who wins immunity so it was randomized and eman won. zee thinks steven/colin/raffy are a voting bloc. could be! and now she’s less wary of alex bc he was the first vote out lmao which was honestly surprising but also good like, yes plz think alex is doing nothing in this game. anyway i need to stop using confessionals like a recap, we do not need a recap.
alex and steven and i figured out that tony + michael know each other outside the game and that jack + champ are actually IRL friends so that is like…. insane and huge info. we are geniuses. steven and alex and i tried to figure out a way to get someone besides raffy out (either zee or kolby) but we’re scared. i feel pretty certain we are grossly overestimating zee’s influence in this game lol but better safe than sorry i guessss! champ still seems to want to work with me and alex despite the fact that i asked for my vote back and she curved me and then said no basically LMAO ok girl! jack messaged me after the challenge and said he “heard tony’s name.” like, okay, work! alex talked to champ and said she suggested maybe michael or tony or kolby and he was like OOOO KOLBY??? OKAYYYY, cuz we want kolby gone bc he seems to be very tight with zee annnnd it would be good to knock down her number…s? but alex told her he hadn’t heard anyone yet. good job alex. this tribal is going to be such a shitshow i’m so exhausted these calls last hours !
i still have my knowledge is power advantage and now i have the idol hunt clue and i have $60. AND I’LL FINALLY BE ABLE TO VOTE AT TRIBAL, GOODDDDD. where can i spend this money?!?!?!?!?!
i love alex and steven, they are angels and i feel very lucky and glad that we’re working together. at this point i feel i would be happy to see either of them win. colin is still a huge mystery to me, i msged them and was like LMAOOO CUTE VOTE! cuz they had msged me before the vote and said he was voting for astyn cuz there was ‘no reason to go against the tribe’ LMAO then he voted michael and was the only one. which like, sure it’s maybe not fun to have a unanimous vote annnnnd now if astyn comes back they have a buddy. but i didnt even ask who they were going to vote for, like they j randomly told me LMAOOO but ya we got to laugh about it so i feel ok with colin. tho he did vote for eman in the popularity challenge.. that little shit!
oh steven told me that you can buy a fake idol in purgatory and give it to someone in the game LMFAO SO IF SOMEONE WE VOTE OFF SENDS ME AN IDOL I WILL BE KEEPING THAT IN MIND!!! sorry hosts, i might try and do a video confessional before tribal but who knows! enjoy this diary entry!
oh ALSO. alex said jack had messaged him before the challenge and said that he was gonna vote me or alex first in the popularity contest? which he did (me) but like, telling alex that is like so random, i immediately was like, alex, baby, he knows we are tight bc we have that alliance with champ and jack and champ are irl friends even tho theyre pretending not to be LMAO alex was like ohhh yeahhhhhhh. so i was like, jack seems a lil like a lost lamb, we shld probably make a lil group chat for him or sth at some point. he honestly seems like a lil sweetie. anyway now it seems like tony is out. i would rather see kolby go but neither of them talk to me so ultimately who cares.

Eman
Oh man. Oh woman. Oh camera. Oh television . . .
Things what happened since my last confession.
Voted out Astyn.
Got to having some good conversations with Alex.
Got approached by Colin to form a secret alliance because no one would suspect us of working together.
Began second guessing more vibes. (Especially Kolby & Zee)
Vibe-checked Colin and Zee with Alex (why not).
Steven returned (which in the context of some of Kolby's other inconsistencies has me rethinking a lot).
Got involved in a MARATHON post-tribal chat/game/convo.
Which resulted in . . . my THIRD alliance.
So there's that.

What in in the tattooed baby Jesus tap-dancing through frozen-over hell just happened?
I'm actually talking about the auction not the popularity contest.
I'm slightly more uncomfortable with the peanut butter purchasing and people helping me buy it than I am with the results of the popularity contest. Why were people throwing money at me like I had the last snow shovel in a 5 foot blizzard?
Don't get me wrong, the results of the popularity contest both ameliorated and exacerbated every high school trauma . . . and while I'm kinda stroking my metaphorical beard about how well I played pretending to randomize things while actually being very calculating (yes, I made a list ahead of time - and then based my vote based on every other move made up to that point (ironically, I truly suck at chess)) and also about the fact that I'm 95% certain that all the other members of the Mystery Machine alliance were doing something similar based solely on the fact that we managed to occupy so many of the final slots . . . (that may have just been the longest dependant clause in the history of the English language, nevermind my abuse of parentheticals)
BUT I am also simultaneously truly horrified at the outcome - here I am (with Kaleigh) on display as someone that everyone likes/is willing to save. Here I am (with Kaleigh) splitting the vote between everyone for winner of this immunity. Here I am (with Kaleigh) pretty much advertising that NO ONE IS GOING TO WANT TO SIT NEXT TO THIS INCREDIBLY LIKEABLE PERSON AT THE END.
Fuck me sideways with a rotting trout skeleton.
My only saving grace is that the final immunity was randomized. Thank you for that, Champ.

Wondering who actually reads the tribe posts . . .
The reason I'm wondering is b/c it looked like post-auction that I'd actually just paid all that money for nothing more than a jar of peanut butter.
But then post-tribal in the post it came out that I had an advantage--based on the auction results post.
So in one group I tried to get ahead of it saying that it was just a 10% (thank you, Tony!), in another (Tony's group, I just said, oh - hey, I got an advantage) without disclosing what it was. And then in a third, I've not said anything (mostly because based on current vibes/whims, I kinda wanna strategically tell the truth, but I'm NOT quite there yet).
AND yet NO ONE--in either group chat or DM--has said, "so, hey, eman, you have an advantage after all . . . 'sup?"
And why does this matter?
Well, friends & frenemies, the advantage is that I can bank a vote.
And in classic overthinking fashion, I'm going to be pondering whether tonight's the night I wanna use it. Mostly because when better to NOT vote then when you're guaran-damn-teed to be safe, amiright?
But I don't wanna not vote if I am not 100% certain that the person for whom I'd otherwise cast my vote is going home.
Or maybe, for just once, I let go of my control-freak type-a side and let chaos reign. (As long as I know that everyone with whom I'm tight is also safe . . .)
Colin
okay THIS is starting to feel like a real merge tribal.
last night, Jack, Raffy and I decided we wanna vote Tony because there's too many og soca, and we were gonna spread it around throughout the day today.
so THEN Steven allegedly told Zee that he wants Kolby out. Zee went around and was saying that Steven is gunning for Kolby. now Kolby is saying that he wants Steven out
I did plant a little Kolby too. He's misrepresenting it by saying Steven is recklessly throwing his name out, but I corrected it and told him it's actually ZEE who's spreading it around that his name is being said. I'm not sure if Steven told Zee in confidence that he wants Kolby out or what, but I feel like we're not getting the whole story.
i can't WAIT to see how this turns out hehe
Alex
honestly kolby saving michael over me in that first round was maybe the best possible thing for my game. it hopefully got zee off my back since she told at least kaleigh that me and kolby are all tight when in reality it's them who are tight and now zee thinks i'm not talking to people as much as i am. i want her to gooo lol. i never know where her head is at, she has NO interest in talking game to me, and now i don't know where champ stands with me and kaleigh compared to zee. the elite want to take out her or kolby but just cannot figure out how to swing the numbers yet. i'm playing with the elite and the heroes which ultimately works for me I think long-term in case the elite end up in the minority, but zee going is in my best interest. your onion is too layered! it's threatening! and i really like BOTH groups of people, i'd call kaleigh and eman my closest allies and favorite people in the game, but i don't know how to combine them without being like hiii yeah i'm coordinating more than any of you know! i've gotta figure out where eman is at without being too pushy. they were worried about colin being so willing to give that information up about zee at the summit but if i can switch it around to being worried about zee playing so strongly and not telling any of us. the way i actually WANT raffy to have an idol now so he could potentially negate the votes zee maybe wants to put on him if she's telling kaleigh the truth. ugh.
Champ
I HAVE SO MUCH TO WRITE AND SO LITTLE TIME TO DO SO😭 so like if I get blindsided by this vote IM RAGE QUITTING jk but like I will be outraged, I’m trying to set up a very big blindside and if I miss… IM TOAST so everything and everyone better work on according to plan otherwise I WILL blow up some peoples games. Also idk why I’m sounding so aggressive rn lol anyways the way it was between Kaleigh and eman for the popularity contest was not a surprise… i see right through them, great game players, so great socially!! They are pretty much allied with everyone and like who are you actually loyal too😭?? I could write a novel but I’m running out of time. I’m genuinely nervous about this vote

Tony
This tribal feels serious AF! Apparently folks are throwing my name around and it’s got me hella nervous because I didn’t anticipate myself being a threat, but maybe I am at this point in the merge. All I know right now is that Champ and Eman are backing me and that’s enough to calm my nerves for now.
Michael
Busy weekend for me and a busy time in the game, not opportune at all. I fear Tony is going next but we'll have to see. Trying to do what I can to save my friend here. There are talks of a vote being organized against Raffy, so it could go wither way. Will not be present at tonight's tribal so who knows how it's going to go.
Zee
These hoes ain't loyal. Not one fucking bit. Pardon my french but ya girl is sussed out by a lot of people recently. I don't think I can trust Kaleigh, recently I've just been getting strange vibes from her, and I think she could be in with the men, which is sad, because it means out of the Mystery Machine Alliance, she'd be the first to go. The challenge was wild, but here's what it taught me: Tony trusts Eman and Michael the most, meaning that they probably got his shared advantage which he purchased from the auction. Colin, Steven, Raffy, and probably Alex(hell, maybe even Jack) seem to be in an alliance, and they all told me they "couldn't see where tribe lines fell" meanwhile we all witnessed Steven and Colin continually save Raffy, and then the Colin-Steven saving cycle that happened a million and one times over. I also do feel like I would consider myself closest to Champ and Eman. I'm trying to get a chicken coop alliance with me, Kolby, and Eman going. I kept randomizering people's names, very obviously. But in reality I was just picking random people from the list. I picked Tony a couple times. I picked Eman, Kaleigh, and Champ. Kaleigh seemed like it was the last thing she wanted, to save me, Champ tried not to but like if it came down to it she saved me, so I'm not sure about Kaleigh. The vibes are off, and I don't think I can trust her anymore.
The plan is, hopefully, to get Raffy out, or at least flush an idol. Steven told me he wants to get Kolby, so maybe their group will be voting Kolby, so worst case scenario, Kolby goes home, or the votes are more split. Champ and I combined have 4 votes, which we're(for now) planning on using. Then Eman says they want to get Raffy out, and maybe Tony will vote with them, and perhaps Michael will vote with Tony as well. So in that case we're at what, 7? If we can get Kolby and Kaleigh on board that's 9 for Raffy, but again I have no idea who's side Kaleigh is actually on. I haven't told Eman about the fact that I don't trust Kaleigh, nor have I told them about this extra vote. If they're really worried, I might say it, but who knows.
Also as a little lover of chaos, I'm thinking of using my Full Transparency Advantage. If there is a plot against me, or Kolby, or if anyone doesn't vote the way they've said they will, then I'll know. If I go to Purgatory, I'll know who sent me, and honestly I'll probably bestow my Idol to Champ. Sure, people will know I voted Raffy, but that's alright. I'm still just considering it, depending on how confident I am at Tribal, I might use it. We'll see how it all goes.
Raffy
This morning, Zee came to me saying that Steven threw out Kolby's name as a potential vote. I told this to Jack and Colin (in our three-person alliance called "AA Meeting" - named after our dearly departed Astyn and Andrea). After comparing notes, it seems like Zee was exaggerating what Steven had said and is trying to pit Kolby and Steven against each other. I have to say that it is a smart move as that could provide shields to hide behind. However, even Alex has figured out Zee is probably lying and is playing a little reckless. So now Zee seems to be on people's radars. Even Colin told Kolby like "I actually heard your name from Zee, not Steven." I've been just trying to get Tony out as he's not really around. This is more of a planting seeds round than it is like intense strategy maneuvering.
Also I do not trust Zee. She never wants to banter or talk strategy with me. It feels like I give her all this information for free, but she never shares any of her own thoughts and opinions. Like, you've got to give me something or I'm gong to think you're just using me to get information. She's shady. I got to watch what I say to her.

When will you post more of Cambridge gojo??
a/n: how do we feel about jealous cambridge!gojo ;)
third part of my cambridge!gojo instalment - you're gonna have to find the first two parts yourself 🤣 | FLUFF, mean gn!reader- it's... banter... but it stops dw, 'beautiful' and 'darling' as endearment, lovesick gojo
Tumblr media
whatever gojo satoru wants, gojo satoru gets.
a new line of designer shades drops from his favourite brand? he's purchasing one in every colour. requesting an extension for the final because he needs to be abroad in who-knows-where? here, take two weeks, hope that's enough. ranked top of the class with little effort? easy, spedran that shit. take a dean's award while you're at it.
he does so all whilst maintaining his image of a perfect bachelor, never having a bad hair or outfit day as he shows up to lectures with a look ready for vogue whilst his classmates are struggling to not let the coffee and tea turn their teeth yellow.
when he flashes his pearly whites and offers you a flirtatious wink, you want to rip his pretty, snowy hair out, except you could never because it looks so soft.
he's also too tall to reach the top of his head.
motherfucker said he wanted to be the same height as the top shelves and was immediately blessed with long, lanky limbs.
so in conclusion, whatever gojo satoru wants, he gets.
the only anomaly in that claim would be you.
he watches from across the campus with a bitter expression plastered on his pretty face. as the students around him stare and quietly fawn over his presence, he's glaring daggers into the window of one of many cambridge cafe, heavenly eyes locked on you.
locked on you and another man, sitting opposite each other in a cozy booth. on your face is a smile that doesn't appear much around him and gojo burns with jealousy at the contradiction. it makes him feel queasy.
what should he do? should he intercept or should he wait for you to leave? a cafe 'date' (gojo shudders at the thought of you on a date with someone that's not him) can only be so long, so waiting wouldn't have any harm.
and violating your privacy would not be a good step in this 'courtship' you have going on.
but when he watches as you throw your head back with laughter, the corner of your eyes creasing due to how wide you were smiling, it gets harder to resist the urge to just storm in and steal you away.
why were you giving him the time of day when gojo couldn't even get a minute of it? what did this other specimen have that he didn't?
somewhere in the back of the white-haired's mind, he hears your voice and how it quips: 'a likeable personality'.
quickly shaking the thought away, gojo watches as you two pack up your table, shoving your laptop into your bag before shuffling out of the booth, disappearing from his sight. in retrospect, what he was doing was definitely creepy and he should have just kept going with his day but the second that he saw you with another man? his day was immediately turned on its head- there was no day to be had until he did something!
what if someone sweeps you off your feet before gojo does? he's been trying for months at this point and if some random thinks he can disrupt the progress gojo's worked his ass off to create then he has some bad news.
when you appear outside the cafe a minute later, he's relieved to see you bidding farewell to said classmate.
his body moves first and the white-haired easily closes the distance between you with his one metre stride length, curling around you to whisper a quiet 'boo' in your ear.
looking up at him, you pull a jokingly disgusted expression, frowning at him. "oh hey, it's the ugliest man i've ever seen in my life," you murmur.
gojo's jaw drops and he doesn't even have time to pick it back up when you begin to walk away. "i know you don't mean that!" he exclaims behind you, matching your steps.
"are you calling me a liar?"
"that's exactly it!"
"lies are beneficial sometimes."
he slings an arm over your shoulder, leaning onto you. "relative to the context, and darling, my beauty is not something to take lightly."
"you're a clown."
"you can just say that i capture your attention without comparing me to a circus actor."
"with your grandpa hair and overgrown limbs? i'm not looking at you willingly, y'know, you stick out like a sore thumb everywhere you go."
"good, means you get to look at me more."
"i'd rather gauge my eyes out."
"you're real mean to me."
"i will continue to be so for as long as you're vain. besides, my attempts of being mean aren't deterring you, for whatever reason."
"we're meant to be, y/n! i stay because of my heart that beats for you and you alone," he huffs, pulling you closer towards him. you get a whiff of his expensive cologne and you need to turn your nose away before you bury it in his chest. "y'know what, i think we started this interaction on the wrong foot."
"well you only have two and both are quite problematic."
gojo clears his throat, ignoring your last statement. "good afternoon, my beautiful y/n. how are you on this fine thursday?"
"why i am quite well," you respond, mimicking a posh accent. "thank you inquiring. how might you be, gojo?"
"fantastic now that i'm your company rather than that stranger you were previously at the cafe with."
your eyebrows scrunch together, conveying a mix of shock, confusion, and slight anger. "you saw me? how?"
"i was on my way back from a class then i saw you! you know me, i can't help but be drawn in by you, then i saw you with another and it broke my heart, so i was compelled to stay!"
"so you just... watched me? how long did you stand there for, you creep!"
"it wasn't like that- and not that long! just long enough to see that you were enjoying being with him," this time, a genuine frown overtakes his glorious features and a part of your heart sizzles because you caused it. "you looked happier with him than you ever are with me."
"gojo, are you upset?" you asked cautiously, not wanting to stroke the turbulence within him with another witty comeback.
"no," he lies with a sniffle, crossing his arms defensively.
the sight of him being so vulnerable breaks your heart a little and you pull him by the hand to the nearest vacant bench. you sit him down and stand between his legs.
your heart aches a little more at the way he looks up at you with such hope and wonder in those crystal eyes of his. you hate the way gojo's eyes bare into your soul; it's so unnerving, yet you don't have it in you to look away.
"i'm sorry, i realise a lot of the stuff i said just then was a little out of pocket, i didn't mean to hurt your feelings," you begin awkwardly, trying your best to sound genuine. "i'm happy around you, i promise, gojo."
with your affirmation, a wide smile replaces his previous frown and he throws his arms around your waist, causing you to stumble closer. instinctively, your hands hold on to his shoulders. he recovers quite quickly for the magnitude of his ego.
at his lighter attitude, you throw in a harmless quip. "although i might not act like it because you're too irritating for your own good."
he pouts again- jokingly.
"at least you're pretty," you sigh.
"i'm prettier than- whoever the hell you were just hanging out with- right?" he asks, prodding the extent of your vulnerability. "you're even happier around me, right?"
"what? why are you asking me these- wait... are you jealous?"
the way his nose scrunches reveals his answer, and the way that he reluctantly drags out a 'no' whilst avoiding eye contact has you chuckling at his childish behaviour.
"there's nothing to be jealous over. he's just a classmate i was partnered for for a semester project," you reassure. "i don't know what you have to be jealous of in the first place, though."
"i have to watch you interact with another man for another semester?"
you scowl at him, narrowing your eyes at his outburst. "watch your mouth, knave."
"yes, your highness," he mocks, sinking into the bench as he pouts again.
whatever gojo satoru wants, gojo satoru gets because he accepts it all with open arms... even if it's you giving him the bare minimum.
one day he'll get you to crack, but for now, he bides.

heart has his heart | part 3.
Summary: (Y/N) Heart is chosen alongside her friends to attend Auradon Prep. Of course her friend Mal’s mom, Maleficent, has a much more sinister plan than the kids just attending Auradon. Will they be able to pull of stealing the wand or will (Y/N) find herself liking Auradon a bit too much?
Pairing: Ben x reader
Word Count: 2.3k
Warnings: none
Previous Part | (Series Masterlist)
Tumblr media
“This is our one chance to prove to our parents that we can do this. That we are ruthless and vicious and cruel just like them.” You heard Mal as you walked into Jay and Carlos’ room.
“Speak for your own parents.”
“Where have you been?” Mal asked when you fully entered the room.
“Uh, shopping…” the other VKs just looked at you. “What? Auradon Mall has like two hundred stores.”
“Whatever, we figured out where the wand is.”
Mal showed you Evie’s magic mirror. It was showing the museum.
“Great, how are we getting it? This isn’t breaking into a house. The museum has guards and cameras.”
“We’re working on that part.”
“So, I guess we’re going now? Alright whatever, let’s just do this.”
The museum wasn’t nearly as guarded as you thought. It was just one man watching security cameras… with Maleficent’s spinning wheel on display right behind him. Auradon really didn’t think this through. But you guess, in their defense they didn’t expect any VKs to be running around the place.
“Okay, M. Do your thing.”
Mal pulled out her spellbook and made the guard prick his finger, sending him into a sleep. You turned off the cameras as the others located the room the wand was in. There it was floating and glowing in some blue light. Jay leaned under the railing to grab it.
“Jay, don’t!”
“M, I thought you wanted it.”
“Do you not see the light.”
“Which is just a blue light,” you reasoned. “Nothing else in this museum has any sort of protection but that guard who’s probably counting his seven hundredth sheep by now.”
What you said was good enough for Jay and he reached for the wand. As soon as his hand touched the blue light he sent back and a loud alarm came on.
“Okay, I was wrong. Definitely not just a blue light!”
“A forcefield and a siren?” Carlos covered his ears.
“That’s just a tad excessive,” Jay said getting up from the ground.
“Let’s get out of here!”
You all ran out of the museum before the guard even had a chance to see you.
“Great, Jay. Now we have to go to class on Monday!” Mal yelled as you guys kept running, even when the museum was out of sight.
You were sitting in the newly created Remedial Goodness class. It was just you and the other VKs, no shocker there. Fairy Godmother was standing at the front of the class with a blackboard and some multiple choice questions written on it.
“If someone hands you a crying baby do you: a) curse it? b) lock it in a tower? c) give it a bottle? Or d) carve out its heart?”
What sort of questions are these? It wasn’t rocket science. Evie held up her hand for Fairy Godmother to call on.
“What was the second one?”
You looked at your friend.
“E? You’re kidding, right? You’re gonna lock the baby in a goddamn tower. Mother of the year award right there. It’s C. Give it a bottle.”
“Oh well, the language wasn’t the nicest but the answer was correct again, (Y/N),” Fairy Godmother said.
The VKs looked at you impressed.
“You are on fire, girl! How are you knowing all these?” Carlos asked.
“She just picked the answer that seemed the most boring.” Mal was absentmindedly drawing Fairy Godmother’s wand.
“Or it’s called being a decent person, M.”
“Mmm. No thanks.”
“Okay, then. How about we move on to the next question Fairy Godmother?”
“That seems like a good idea.”
Before Fairy Godmother could ask the next question, her daughter Jane scurried past all of you to approach her mom.
“Hi, mom. I need you to sign off on early dismissal for the coronation.”
“Everyone here remembers my daughter Jane,” Fairy Godmother said as she signed the papers.
“Mom, no.”
“Oh, it’s alright.”
Fairy Godmother pushed Jane in front of you all. The girl squeaked out a measly hi.
“Don’t mind me. As you were.” Jane ran out the room.
“Can I go to the bathroom?” Mal asked. Fairy Godmother dismissed her.
Mal nudged your shoulder and motioned for you to go with her.
“Me too?” You asked.
Because you had been getting all the questions right, you were dismissed too. You followed Mal out the room, hearing Fairy Godmother tell Jay and Carlos maybe they should direct all their pent up energy to the Tourney Field. You and Mal followed Jane all the way to the bathrooms.
“Hi! It’s Jane, right?” Mal asked as you two lowkey cornered the girl. “I’ve always loved that name.”
“It’s very nice.” You added for good measure. You had no clue what angle Mal was playing at but you assumed it was for the wand.
“That’s cool,” Jane said trying to escape.
“Wait, don’t go!” Mal said a little too aggressively. You bumped her slightly with her hip and she switched her tone.
“I mean, we were just kind of hoping to make some friends. You probably have all the friends you need though, right?”
“Hardly,” Jane said sadly.
“Really?” you asked.
“I mean with your mom being Fairy Godmother and Headmistress,” Mal piggybacked off of you. “Not to mention your own… personality.”
“I think I’d rather go for pretty. I mean look at you guys’ hair.”
Mal looked between the two of you. “This? You know, I’ve got just the thing for that.”
She pulled out her spellbook and turned Jane’s hair from a drab bob to really pretty black layers. She took Jane up to the mirror.
“Wow, I mean you almost don’t notice your other features anymore.”
Really, Mal?
“Do my nose,” Jane said excitedly.
“Oh, I can’t. I’m not good at big magic yet and we’d want you to have a really pretty nose. But… your mother’s wand. I’m pretty sure she could do it. We should go ask her.”
Okay, Mal. You were impressed. Her plan seemed to be working.
“She doesn’t want to use the wand anymore. She thinks real magic is in the books, and not spell books. Textbooks.”
“What a rip. You know she used magic on Cinderella and she wasn’t even her real daughter. Doesn’t she love you?”
Geez, M, you thought.
“Well, of course she does. It’s just…”
“Tough love?” you interjected. If Jane felt too dejected she might turn against you two.
Jane nodded. “Work on the inside, not the outside.”
“I totally get it,” you lied. Your mother had taught you the inside meant nothing if the outside couldn’t convey it. Nasty inside was nasty out, good inside was good out. And royal hearts always looked as royal as they sounded.
Jane laughed a little before the sad look on her face returned.
“That’s it! That’s the face!” Mal yelled, startling you and Jane.
“What?”
You caught on quickly.
“Mal’s right. Give your mother one look with that face. ‘Oh mother, why can’t you make me pretty too?’ Give her that exact line and she’s got to crack. Works on my mom all the time.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah,” Mal said. “I mean isn’t that what old Cindy did and your mom bibbidi-bobbidi-booed her all the way up. And hey, if your mom does come around… mind inviting us to watch?”
“I want to ask if she can do my nose too,” you chimed in hoping you two would seem innocent.
“I mean your face is already perfect…”
“Oh, thanks.”
“But if she does, I’ll definitely let you two know. Thank you so much!”
“Don’t mention it. Just don’t forget to call.” Mal walked out the bathroom.
Jane was about to follow when you stopped her. “Hey, you do cheer don’t you?”
“Yeah, why?”
“You think it’s possible…”
“For you to join the team? We have practice later on today. Come by.”
The cheerleaders were already finished stretching as you approached the Tourney Field. Waiting for you was Jane… and Audrey. That’s when you noticed the letter ‘C’ pinned to her chest. Of course, she was captain. This was about to be a losing battle.
“Jane said you wanted to join. Let’s see what you got.”
You followed from the back lines as they went over cheers and other things. You were keeping up pretty well.
“Not bad. Take a water break and we’ll continue girls.”
You took the break as time to watch Carlos and Jay play Tourney. They were both surprisingly good at it.
“GO Jay! GO Carlos! Let’s go Jay and Carlos!” You cheered from the sidelines. Both boys stopped and turned to wave at you.
“Okay, break over. (Y/N), there’s a few more tryout things you have to do before we decide.”
“Okay give it to me.”
“Can you do a double toe touch? Back handspring? Leg extension? Back tuck? Hurdler? Basic toe touch? Pike jumps?”
“Um… we didn’t really do any of that on the Isle.”
“A simple cartwheel?”
“I can do a split.”
“She can do a split. Looks like that’s not good enough. Do we think so girls?”
The other cheerleaders didn’t say anything against Audrey but they didn’t seem like they completely agreed. Something told you that not everyone on the team could do those things.
“I mean, I’m not asking to be front line. I’ll improve. I’ll take some tumbling classes. I’ll get better.”
“But you’re not better right now.”
“Is there a problem?” You heard Carlos’ voice get as deep as he could make it.
Carlos and Jay were behind you in an instant. You guessed their Tourney practice ended. Ben and Chad Charming came strolling up as well.
“No, guys. There’s no problem. I was just trying out for cheer.”
“Oh that’s great, (Y/N). Between Jay and Carlos on Tourney and you on cheer, you guys are really fitting in here.”
“Don’t get your hopes up, Ben. I don’t have the skills.”
“Hmm?”
“No tumbling. I’m not making the cut this year.”
“That’s crazy not everyone on the team tumbles… I don’t think.” Ben turned to his girlfriend. “Audrey can’t y—”
“Ben.” You cut him off.
“I don’t need you fight battles for me. It’s cool. I didn’t make the cut, I’ll just try again next semester. Thanks for the chance, Audrey. I’ll see you other girls later, maybe? Come on guys, let’s bounce.”
You wrapped your arms around both Carlos and Jay, the three of you heading away from the fields and back towards the school.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Eww, Jay you’re so gross!” Evie said laughing as the boy was trying to fit as many chicken nuggets as possible into his mouth.
“Are they always like this?”
“Jay? Yeah, Moe. He’s pretty much always like this.”
“Am not.”
“Are too.”
You, Moetini, and the VKs were outside for lunch. While Jay tried to stuff his mouth with chicken nuggets, you were dipping them one at a time and eating like a civilized person. Aside from the setting, it was just like being back on the Isle. You and the gang, having fun, doing dumb stuff.
You could hear Chad, Audrey, and Ben talking from above you guys. It was whispered, but you could still hear it.
“Those kids are trouble,” Chad said.
“You guys are jumping to conclusions. We just need to give them a chance.”
“Okay, Benny-Boo, you are just too trusting. I know your mom fell in love with a big nasty beast that turned out to be a prince; but, with my mom the evil fairy was just an evil fairy… that girl’s mother. And with Chad’s mom, the cruel stepmother was just a cruel mom. And I don’t know about you but when has ‘off with your head’ ever been just a friendly saying.”
“Well, in her defense, I don’t think Heart ever said it was a friendly saying. I think you guys are wrong. I’ll see later, okay. I’ve got to see how they’re doing.”
Ben appeared at your table minutes later. “Hey guys.”
“Hello, our trusting Benny-Boo.”
You spared no one from teasing, even someone being nice like Ben. It was a talent you had.
“How much of that did you hear?”
“Try all of it. I like to listen to things.”
“Noted. Anyway, I just wanted to see how you all are doing. Especially you, (Y/N).” Ben sat down at the table.
“Me? Why?”
“I just noticed that everyone else has something to do here but you. Jay and Carlos do tourney, Mal does art, Evie has design. You’re doing nothing. I just don’t want you to get lonely here.”
“Ha. Thank you. I have Moetini and these guys I’m not lonely. And I was supposed to do cheerleading if you remember a few days ago. Didn’t work out too well, so let me wallow in my nothingness.”
“You know what I mean, Heart.”
“Do I, Ben?”
“Just give me a hobby you like and we can sign you up for something.”
“Fine, whatever. I like gardening, I guess… what?”
“Oh, I just wasn’t expecting that. I like gardening too.”
“Really?” Ben and gardening was not something you pictured.
“Yeah. My mom and dad are really into it.”
“Beast? King Beast? That’s even more shocking.”
“Gardening, you two, really? Just like old women. My dad doesn’t even do that and he’s hundreds of years old…literally,” Moetini said, making the VKs laugh.  “So, if you like gardening, what’s your favorite flower?”
“Oh that’s easy.” Ben started. “Only the best one out there obviously…”
“A rose.” You and Ben answered at the same time and then looked at each other. “Red ones.”
You and Ben stared at each other before Carlos cleared his throat and Ben returned to what he was going to say. “Yeah, so, um… we have a gardening club I could sign you up for.”
“Yeah, that sounds good.”
“And my mom’s always looking for someone to help her tend roses, if you want. We don’t grow those on campus on account of their reputation for—”
“Being difficult to handle.”
“Exactly that.”
“I swear, if people just paid attention they’d see that they’re not that hard. And the reward is so worth it.”
“That’s what I’ve been saying.”
“Tell your mom I’d be happy to help her.”
“Cool. I’ll see you in class.” You and Ben had four classes out of your schedule together.
Note
maybe something like interviewer asking her sexist questions and the boys stand up for her , after that interview she feels insecure and the boys comfort her . that's just an idea you don't have to write it !! <33
I hope you like it, and I'm so sorry about the delay 😭 I couldn't find my footing with this one, and I hope it's what you wanted ! Have a lovely day 💙
The One Where They're There For Her
Tumblr media
Pairing - One Direction x Reader (6thmember!female!reader)
Fandom - One Direction (Directioners)
Summary - A particularly sexist interview decides to reduce you to just a sexual being and makes no effort to hide his misogyny. But the boys are there to support you.
Warnings - sexualization of the lgbt community, sexist comments, swearing, (honestly I hated myself for writing some of the comments here,and I'm so sorry)
Being a part of the biggest band in the world comes with certain responsibilities. Not responsibilities that come along with signing a recording contract, but those that a person deems themselves responsible for. For example, as the only female in a boyband, a female with a fanbase as large as yours, you took it upon yourself to always stand up for what's right, and to be an ally for the causes close to your heart.
That meant that your social media was often flooded with information about important causes, or your opinions on issues like feminism. Was it always well received? Heck no. There were people filled your feed with hate and comments calling you the most horrible names and labelling you a 'man hater' and a 'bitch' But you didn't let it get to you. On most days. On days like today, it was all you could do to keep it together. It had been a tiring few days, touring, recording, performing and doing an endless amount of interviews and photoshoots. It was safe to say you were on the last of your nerves, having battled your way through a makeup artist who had insisted on pointing out your flaws and had used a shit ton of makeup to cover them up. You had battled a photographer who had not hesitated to tell you that if you didn't look more feminine people would think you were turning into a man.
Before you could retaliate, Paul had dragged him away and told management to cancel the photoshoot, and find another photographer before grabbing the six of you some sandwiches and had let you all go back for a quick power nap at the hotel. Then in about half an hour he had woken you up, to get you ready for another interview. That's how you were here, in a white jumpsuit and a black blazer jacket, paired with black heels. Another day, another interviewer that got on your nerves. But this one, this one was different. This interviewer was different, but also the same. Another misogynistic man who thought he was entitled to stare at your ass and cleavage, and eye fuck you as you settled into a seat in between Niall and Zayn.
Settling in, you crossed one knee over the other, plastering a fake smile onto your face, as the man leaned back in his chair, throwing you a sleazy smirk. Noticing the look, Zayn shifted so you were out of view of the interviewer, but in view of the audience. It was in moments like this that you were a 100× more grateful to have your boys. They were well aware of how sleazy some interviewers could be, having had plenty of experience with them, and Zayn and Louis in particular were very protective about the way you were treated. Squeezing your thigh softly, he leaned back a little, lips settling into a thin line as he looked at the interviewer with a cold look. A little behind, Louis threw the interviewer a dirty look.
"So, One Direction! Congratulations on the album, as you all know its out on November the 22nd, with eighteen new songs, including the singles Night Changes and Steal My Girl Speaking of stealing girls, do you think I could steal your number Y/N? And may I mention, you look ver, very hot in that outfit" The interviewer joked, throwing you what he thought was a sexy smirk. (P.S - it wasn't) Answering with an awkward laugh, you shook your head, as Niall tensed up beside you. "Aww come on, your'e a pretty girl, I'm a handsome guy, let's go out sometime" he pressed on, ignoring the growing anger in Harry's eyes. "That's umm, nice. But no thanks, I'm not going to go out with you" was your answer, as you pushed a strand of hair behind your ear. Picking up on your nervous tic, Zayn moved his hand to rest on your knee, stopping it from bouncing up and down.
"Aww come on baby, what is it? You like girls or something? Because I wouldn't mind being a part of that action either" the sleazebag chuckled, ignoring the disgusted look Liam sent his way. "That's rude" Liam said, while Zayn tightened his grip on your knee. "Oh come on lads, are you telling me the idea doesn't appeal to you? Two women together, mm, makes me all excited just thinking about it, especially if one of them's Y/N" That comment was all it took for Louis to stand up, turning to the man and saying in a voice much rougher than his usual voice, "Alright, that's fuckin' enough, what the fuck is actually wrong with you?" he was backed up by Liam, who stood up, going to tower over the interviewer, whose eyes had lost some of the sleazy look in them. "All you've done since we walked in here is make those disgusting comments about Y/N, and it's sickening. Have some fucking respect" he practically spat.
Behind him, Zayn took your hand in his and pulled you to your feet, noticing the slight glossiness in them, leading you back to the dressing rooms, while Niall, Liam, Louis and Harry stayed back to continue to snap at the interviewer. "That is no way to treat a woman, and not only are you disrespecting her, you also made those god awful events about seeing women together. Your'e a shame to every single person in this room by talking like that" Harry continued, glancing over his shoulder to check if you were okay.
"And no, it doesn't excite us, because we are not assholes, and you are, a disgusting sleaze who does not deserve the job he has. Fuckin loser" Niall chimed in, standing up and storming out. Louis stood up as well, turning to directly face the cameras and the cameramen and sound technicians, who had all looked shocked when the man had made his comments towards you. "I sure as hell hope you have that on record, so you can see just how fucking sexist this industry is to women. Y/N does the same job as us, works just as hard and has the same number of awards, nominations, and records and yet you decide to only focus on her body, clothes, love life and sexuality. Get a fucking life" he spat at the camera, before walking away himself, eventually followed by Harry and Liam, who apologized to the outraged fans before leaving themselves. As they made their way to the dressing rooms they could hear the audience telling the interviewer to apologize to you, their anger at the way you were treated echoing through the building.
Walking in, Harry caught sigh of you curled up in one of the armchairs, with Louis sitting beside you, while Niall and Zayn talked to a furious Paul. "He had no damn right to treat her like shite, and you need to make sure that he knows those comments were un-fuckin-acceptable" Niall was saying, looking angrier than Harry had ever seen him. "And to make those sickening comments about wanting to get action? Can't we sue him for something?" Was Zayn's reply, glancing over his shoulder at you to make sure you were still okay. "We can't sue him, atleast I don't think we can, but I'll have someone let the smug bastard know that he needs to learn how to respect a woman" Paul said, before leaving the room to give the six of you some time together before you had to head back to the hotel.
"How're you feeling darling?" Louis said, moving over and patting your knee so you moved. "I'm okay" you mumbled back, letting Louis settle in next to you, leaning back to rest on his chest. "He had no fuckin right to say any of that, and don't you let it trouble you for a second" Zayn added, pouring out a cup of tea for you and for Louis and Harry. "I don't care about what he said, I couldn't care less, but it was just so frustrating, sitting there and listening to him just sexualize a whole community of people. You've got to be in a really sad place to think of shit like that. That's what annoyed me. You think I give a damn about what he said about my clothes or wanting to take me out on a date? It was the way he was talking, like he was sure any woman would be glad to have him that irked me. He's really tiresome" was your reply, as you reached forward for a sip of your tea. "That's the right attitude love. Haters gonna hate" Harry said.
"I know that. But I just wish I could punch him once, which sounds mean, but he does kind of deserve it" Niall said, earning a laugh from you. Niall was never usually aggressive, and even now, he wasn't particularly rude but it was rare to see him wanting to punch someone. "It's okay Niall, you don't have to. I can do it myself, but I won't" you replied, leaning up to squeeze his hand. "Besides, Ni, if you went and punched him, I'd do it too, and then we'd all go to jail" Liam chimed in, scrolling through his twitter. "Twitter isn't happy either babe. #stopsexualization and #Y/Ndeservesbetter is trending already" he added, showing you his phone. "If it means some of these sexist asses get their heads out of the sand, I'm happy. But I dont want to to think about it now" you replied, cuddling closer to the warmth radiating from Louis's body.
"Okay, we won't talk about it. Do you want to go back to the hotel?" Harry asked, standing up and walking to the door "No I want to go to Nando's. Anybody else hungry?" You asked, to nods of assent from the boys. "I'm starving. Those stupid sandwiches didn't fill me up at all" Zayn said, standing up to grab his coat and wallet. "I know and I'm craving some hot Peri Peri chicken with some fries. Do you think they'd let me put the lemon and herb sauce on the fries?" You asked, standing up yourself, earning a laugh from Louis. "Your'e an international superstar babe, I think they'd give you some lemon herb sauce" Liam joked.
Laughing, the six of you made your way to the car, with Harry and Niall squishing you in between them, as Louis sat in the back with Liam, and Zayn sat in the front with Paul (he was driving thank GOD) "I'm proud of you darling" Harry chimed in suddenly. "I am too" Niall added. "You know I am" Louis said, before Liam added "Always babe" and Zayn turned to smile at you before adding, "We are all proud of you, and we always will be, not only because you do a damn good job of not listening to the haters, but because you do what you think is right" "Awh come on, your'e gonna make me cry" you mumbled, leaning into Niall's shoulder. "Almost makes me feel bad for teasing you about having an extremely low spice tolerance the last time we were at Nando's Haz" you smirked, earning a roar of laughter from the boys.
"That chicken was spicy love!" "It was lemon and herb with no peri peri!" "And it was spicy!"
And just like that, you were back to messing around with each other. Sleazy interviewers would come and go, but your boys were always there to support you. Always.
-------
A/N - Thanks for reading ! I'd also like to apologize on the behalf of this fictitious interviewer I made up, I felt so bad while writing some of this 😭 anyways, I hope this is what you wanted! Enjoy !
romeo roulette | jung yoonoh
Tumblr media
pairing: jaehyun x fem!reader
summary: if finding your soulmate is the same as a damn game of russian roulette, you are determined to not pull the trigger at all. except, you know who your soulmate is and he doesn’t—and given a choice to pretend, you find that jaehyun is the lesser of the two burdens to bear.
genre: soulmate au, office au, fake dating, fluff (a lot), angst (a little), romcom, magical realism (??)
words: 21.2k
warnings: language
song recs: playlist here !
a/n: behold ! a kdrama compressed in a fic ! ok i was lying there was more than a little angst but all in good fun <3 i have never experienced working in an office (thanks to the panny) but i tried making it as accurate as i could !! hope you have fun with this <3
Tumblr media
It’s not that you’ve never been looked at with a lover’s gaze, it’s just that whatever look Jaehyun has been giving you is mildly uncomfortable. It’s not supposed to be that way. Hell, even his hand clasping yours are a little too clammy for your liking.
Jung Yoonoh. Get your act together.
You wish he were a better actor than this. For someone used to eyes on him in each and every room he’s in, he’s not very good at making eye contact. You’ll be saving this performance. Not to stroke your own ego but at least you know how to behave under strong gazes.
There are three people staring at the two of you and your fingers intertwined, scrutinizing your postures and the expressions on your faces. Maybe Jaehyun should face them instead of glancing at you wordlessly. He’s a terrible liar for someone who acts so smooth.
You look up with a short smile. The aforementioned three are your coworkers—former class rep at uni and your current boss Doyoung, your friend Soojin and Jaehyun’s friend Sicheng from IT. None of them look happy—like it concerns them. If there was a competition for nosy coworkers, this entire group would be winning awards left and right (and that’s including you).
They’re going to find out, an annoying voice giggles inside the quiet corner of your brain. Like hell, they will. You didn’t take up acting lessons in college for nothing. You just need to focus on the details.
This whole charade dates its beginning to a week ago.
If someone were to tell you Jung Yoonoh from marketing is your soulmate, you would most certainly either laugh or take it as a genuine insult. Hence, you were glad when you found that he isn’t.
It was an accident. You had glimpsed at his soulmark, right below his collarbone, at a particularly wild office afterparty—and somehow, you thought it was fitting that his tattoo was a little red heart. For someone born on Valentine’s day (which you know from a night out with coworkers, not because you’re remotely interested), if his soulmark was not something as disgusting as a heart, it would be the textbook definition of irony. But then again, fate is a funny thing. Your soulmark is a heart roughly the same size, with a little more intricacy in the form of a piercing arrow.
Despite all, however, if someone were to ask you if Jung Yoonoh is the worst person to be your soulmate, the answer is no. You can name at least five coworkers off the top of your head that you’d choose him over. You would choose him over Doyoung (and especially his nagging), you would choose him over Taeyong because he’s too hot and you also don’t like men in a higher position than you are, you would choose him over Jungwoo because you suspect he’s secretly a furry. Jaehyun is certainly better than your deskmate Dongmin who, despite an angelic smile, is: a) too distant to make actual conversation with, and b) in a relationship despite being your soulmate. Sweet-tempered Dongmin doesn’t even know it’s you. You’d love to be the bearer of bad news but this one—you’re not exactly ready for it yourself.
So that’s the explanation for why you hunted down Jaehyun and in a desperate attempt to not seem pathetic, coerced him into a role that has carefully picked benefits for either of you. You just have to bite the bullet sometimes.
“And I get what out of this?”
“Me? Temporarily, that is.”
Jaehyun laughs in amusement and you drop your smile, almost offended. If you were a gift, you’d certainly be an attractive, spicy, hot one—he doesn’t have to look at you so incredulously. In a neat business suit, Jaehyun is as kempt as ever though his tie could do with some more work.  As an HR assistant, his appearance pleases you. However as a person, the perfection annoys the hell out of you. He could show himself to be more human. It would make your job (both the actual and the metaphorical) easier.
“I’m leaving,” he announces with a nonchalant exhale. “You keep messing around during work hours like this and people are going to think you’re jobless.”
“Wait!”
You jog up to him and block his path, crossing your arms as you huff at his indignance.
“I said no,” he repeats, and when he tries to evade you, you push him back with your palm flat against his chest. Jaehyun doesn’t show any more discomfort than usual, biting the inside of his cheek.
“You haven’t found your soulmate, right?” you say, taking a deep breath. If you have to resort to psychological warfare, so be it.
His smile wavers and he straightens, no longer leaning against the printer desk. “No. How does that matter?”
“It matters because you’re going to be my pretend-soulmate. Now, don’t be a pussy.”
He opens his mouth and closes it, furrowing his eyebrows. “You can’t always trick me into doing what you want.”
“I’ll ask Doyoung if you say no.”
“See—enough with the tricks, they don’t work anymore. I’ve known you for two years.”
“I really will ask him.”
“Not convincing enough. You don’t even talk to Doyoung outside work.”
You groan into your hand, taking a few moments to come up with another plan. How is your obvious charisma not enough? You certainly can’t tell him how rejected you feel with the whole Dongmin situation even if his rejection hasn’t officially come yet. It’s too embarrassing for a grown adult to go through. You don’t mind being lonely for the rest of your life if you’re successful. There’s a price tag on each decision you make anyway.
“I’ll treat you to lunch every day. I’ll pay.”
You cross your arms, tapping your foot in anticipation. They say the way to a man’s heart is through the stomach. Besides, Jaehyun hates spending his lunch money on himself. This ought to do something.
Jaehyun places his hand in front of his mouth in mock surprise. “Oh no, out of your beloved paycheck? That’s kind of scary, honestly.”
“Jaehyun. Stop messing around. I’m being serious.”
He purses his lips, hesitation across his face. You don’t like the way he thinks, with quiet, lost eyes and no clear giveaways on his lips.
“Okay. I’ll do it.”
You smile in relief though you try somewhat to not let it show on your face.
“On one condition.”
Your eyes dart across his face, nothing that tells what he might suggest next. You hate when you don’t get to decide on things.
“You have to come visit my family next month and pose as my soulmate—”
“No way.”
“—and when this whole game you’re playing is over, you’re going to say I rejected you.”
You stare at him, weighing the odds.
“Fine,” you say finally, voice pitched in slight annoyance.
Jaehyun shrugs.
“But I tell my parents that I rejected you. Or they’ll come after you with a task force or something.”
You mutter the last part.
He grimaces, holding his breath for a good few seconds and then letting it go.
“Alright. It’s not like mine and your parents know each other—or will ever meet.”
“Fine then,” you say. “We have an agreement.”
“We have an agreement,” he repeats.
Now, back to more pressing matters. The people in front of you aren’t a stupid lot—even if you've seen Doyoung spend $500 on plush toys, seen Sicheng absentmindedly walk into a desk and pretend to not be in pain for the next five minutes and Soojin somehow convinced a senior to get her coffee because she thought he was an intern (in her defence, it worked).
The only way is to act through. You clear your throat.
"We… we discovered it last week. Our signs match."
Technically, you drew an arrow with a permanent marker over Jaehyun's tattoo in an attempt to resemble yours. It's not awful, but perhaps not perfect.
“Discovered? Like just happened to find out?” Doyoung asks.
“Isn’t Jaehyun’s on…” Soojin leans in to whisper hurriedly in your ear. “On his butt? Did you guys sleep together?”
You contort your face in disgust. “The what? What? Who told you that? And no.”
Soojin makes an ‘ah’ sound and leans back. “I should stop listening to office rumours then.”
"You should." You glare at her.
Sicheng is the only one without questions at the tip of his tongue but the look on his face worries you most.
“I’ve never seen your tattoo, now that I think about it,” he muses, turning to Jaehyun. “Although we’re roommates.”
Jaehyun clears his throat, looking around with shifty eyes. "Why is… why is everyone looking so suspicious?"
"It's just… so sudden," Soojin says, looking around at the others.
"Yeah," Sicheng mutters.
"Soulmate fraud is a big deal too, you know that right?" Doyoung informs. "You could get put in jail."
You throw up your hands in exasperation. "Why would we pretend? We don't have any reason to. And, uh, you're sure about the jail thing?"
You look at Doyoung, hoping your question didn’t come off too squeaky.
"You’re right,” he says, sighing. “It’s so unlikely for soulmates to work in the same company, let alone the same building.”
“Oh, yes, I’m so lucky,” you mutter under your breath.
Doyoung sighs. "Look, we're happy for you. It's just that… it's a little sudden."
"Literally what I just said," Soojin says.
"Literally what she just said," Doyoung agrees quickly, not wanting to pick a fight. Sometimes you wonder who the real boss is.
"Look, just because we don't even acknowledge each other or find each other remotely attractive or wouldn't even be each other's office Christmas card candidate—"
Jaehyun nudges your side with his elbow and gives you a look that seems a lot like "You're making it worse".
You clear your throat. "That's what happens to most soulmates! You think you're going to land the perfect one and boom. You get a chump from marketing."
Jaehyun makes a sound of protest. "I didn't want a snob from HR either."
The two of you glare at each other, and you find that clenching his jaw makes Jaehyun slightly (around 0.05%) more attractive, or at the very least more bearable to look at.
Doyoung gasps. "Okay, I get it. You're having adjustment issues. I know a guy for that. He's helped every newly found soulmate couple adjust with each other."
"We don't need that," you interrupt, offering your fakest smile.
"You do," Doyoung responds, his smile equally fake. "I'll drive you this weekend if you're free. He’ll give you one free session. No more, because we all know how capitalism works."
People have got to stop copying your fake smile. You wish you could have it copyrighted because after all, it’s the same smile that tricks interviewees into thinking they got the job. It’s not evil if you say it isn’t. You open your mouth, look at Jaehyun doing the same and when you can't come up with an excuse, give up and nod.
"Don't look so resentful," Doyoung says, tone slightly complaining. "I'm not doing this as your boss. We were friends in college and I'm just doing you a favour. A friendly favour."
Soojin hums in deep thought. "I feel like this is some sort of nepotism."
"I feel like you should open a dictionary once in a while," Doyoung mutters, only to get a vaguely threatening look from Soojin.
"Anyway," Sicheng diverts, eyes curious when he turns to Doyoung. "Why did you call us here?"
"Ah." Doyoung's eyes widen. "I heard promotion rumours."
Sicheng lets out a loud huff of annoyance. "You summoned us here for company gossip?"
Doyoung crosses his arms. “So, you’re not interested?”
“Who said that?” Sicheng responds quickly, leaning in.
The five of you huddle closer in a circle, looking as conspicuous as a cult.
“You guys know that Jinyoung’s leaving, right?” Doyoung starts.
Soojin gasps audibly only to get a smack on the arm from Doyoung. “Why’s he leaving? He's like employee of the month every month. ”
A few chuckles pass through the group at her discontentment from months of losing out on the title.
“I heard he found his soulmate. Lucky ass gets tax benefits too now,” Sicheng complains. “Why is he leaving?”
“Oh, look who’s interested in gossip now,” Soojin coos.
Sichengs turns red in the face and looks away, clearing his throat. “You’re gonna answer my question, Doyoung?”
“Oh! Right.” Doyoung looks up from a text. “He got rejected by his soulmate.”
Soojin covers her mouth this time when she gasps and you can’t say your jaw doesn’t drop as well.
“Rejected? Like our picture-perfect Jinyoung got rejected?” you repeat, trying to process the information. “Please don’t tell me he decided to be an idiot and sign a mutual rejection.”
“No, he didn’t lose his senses,” Doyoung responds with a duh undertone. “He’s getting the compensation money.”
You sigh. “Man, I feel bad for him.”
Jaehyun hums in agreement. There’s a hush over the group and you feel fear rise in your chest. You don’t want to be rejected. You’ve seen how happy Dongmin looks with his girlfriend—he’d reject you in a heartbeat. Of course, you could just receive the compensation money from the one-sided rejection and get it over with but you refuse to. It hurts to not be wanted. It hurts to not be wanted by someone who’s supposed to want you. To be specific, it hurts your pride. Every time you see the damn arrowed heart on Dongmin’s wrist, which he tries so hard to cover with his watch, you feel like throwing up. You’re glad yours isn’t as easy to spot—resting right above your hip bone.
“Anyway, someone’s getting promoted to that HR specialist position.”
You gasp. “Is it me? It’s me, right?”
Jaehyun rolls his eyes and you elbow him. “What’s with you?”
“Don’t get too excited,” he says, shrugging. “Isn’t it stupid to get your hopes up over a rumour?”
Doyoung breathes out. “Wow, (name) really sucked the life out of you, Jaehyun.”
You glare at him when Soojin breaks into a fit of laughter. “You- you know what that- you know what that sounds like, right?”
Your face contorts into disgust and you shake your head. “Let’s be more professional, alright, Soojin?”
She clears her throat and straightens her clothes, like a teenager being reprimanded. “I’m your senior. It’s embarrassing when you say that to me.”
Jaehyun speaks up and turns to you. “I think lunch break is almost over.”
You raise an eyebrow. “So?”
“You’re forgetting something.” He smiles, dimples showing, but his eyes come off menacing.
“Fuck,” you mutter under your breath. You forgot about that stupid lunch promise.
“Hey. Professional,” Soojin warns.
You groan and link your arm through Jaehyun’s, making him bite back a smile. What is it with men and getting weirdly happy about lunch?
“We’re gonna go get lunch,” you announce.
“Ooh, (name)’s ditching quality time with coworkers for dates now,” Soojin coos.
You roll your eyes and exit the office, stopping to wait in front of the elevator.
“I think that went well,” Jaehyun says, shrugging lightly.
“Shh. What if they hear us?”
“Do you think they’re X-men? We’re a long corridor and closed doors away.”
You huff, crossing your arms. “Still…”
Jaehyun’s smug smile makes you want to smack it right off and this isn’t the first time you’ve felt this way with him. You swear he’s not as bad as some of the guys you’ve met but Jaehyun is simply annoying. An A grade nuisance. You can trust him though. If Soojin says he’s a reliable guy, you’ll believe her—she doesn’t bluff when it comes to seeing right through men, though she does have a tendency to believe stupid rumours.
“Your acting was shit though,” you snipe.
Jaehyun lets out a low sardonic laugh. “At least I was subtle when I was messing up.”
You cross your arms and huff. “You know what? You can take the next elevator ride.”
“Huh?”
You step into the elevator just as the doors open and quickly jam your finger to the close doors button. The look of betrayal on Jaehyun’s face is subtle but it’s enough to satisfy you. As the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens—it’s very applicable to elevators. He can take the other one.
However, almost immediately after, the elevator doors open and you groan, opening your mouth to send a sarcastic congratulations to Jaehyun for pressing the button on time.
Your words hitch on your tongue. Dongmin greets the two of you with a smile, standing beside Jaehyun, who has his eyes averted from you.
“Hey,” Dongmin greets. “Congratulations. I heard the news.”
“Thanks,” you croak, clearing your throat with a bit of heat on your cheeks. Jaehyun looks like he might burst into a fit of laughter any moment and you shoot him a subtle glare.
“Where are you headed to?” You ask.
“Oh, I’m going to grab a sandwich from the cafeteria.”
“We’re also headed to the cafeteria,” Jaehyun declares, with a smile that’s almost devilish.
“No, we’re not,” you say quickly, making Dongmin raise an eyebrow. You hold back a groan. If only Dongmin weren’t raised to be the politest man you know and a little bit more of an asshole.
You hum and turn to Jaehyun. “I told you about that new cafe. Remember, honey?”
Dongmin makes an ‘o’ with his mouth. “Nicknames, already? Ah, I’m so jealous. It must be great to get along with your soulmate.”
Oh, the sweet summer child that Dongmin is.
Jaehyun furrows his eyebrows. “Oh, won’t it take too long, darling? We have—”
He makes a show of checking his Rolex, a gift he received from his superior that he spares no chance to flex.
“—Around ten minutes left.”
You hold back a groan and plaster on your smile. “Come on. Now is the best time.”
“That sounds like a load of—”
You elbow Jaehyun hard in the gut and a restrained sound dies in his throat, eyes widening in the sweet look of discomfort taking over his features. You smile triumphantly and turn to Dongmin with an immediate change of expression.
“I’ll see you in office later,” you say, bowing slightly.
Dongmin nods and gets off on the fifth floor. You watch in quiet relief as the elevator door closes and turn to your dear companion, irked.
“Did you have to do that?” Jaehyun asks, voice raspy with pain.
“You deserved it. Don’t you dare make this a bigger mess than it already is.”
“You came up with it.” Jaehyun straightens, finally. Apart from the few loose strands of his neatly parted hair, he doesn’t seem all that disgruntled.
“And we’re going to set some ground rules,” you declare, closing your arms.
Jaehyun straightens to his full height, the space between the two of you diminishing.
"Okay," he agrees. "Then we both get a say in it. It's a contract, after all."
"Fine. First rule, no being weird around Dongmin."
Jaehyun chuckles. "I think you need to be more careful about that than I do."
You pat his cheek. "Focus. Just don't- don't be around him for too long."
Jaehyun purses his lips. "Why are you so uncomfortable around him? I thought you were doing this because you didn't want to reject him."
You glance away, feeling uncomfortable. "It doesn't matter. I just don't want him to know."
Jaehyun hums. "Fine. My turn. No calling me a chump."
Your cheeks puff up as you try to contain your laughter. "It bothered you that much, huh?"
Jaehyun furrows his brows. "No one's ever called me that before. It's always 'oh my god, he's so handsome, who is he?' or 'ooh, I might faint from how hot he is'."
You giggle. "Alright, handsome."
Jaehyun exhales, his puffed cheeks making him look like a resentful five year old instead of a grown man with a professional job. You pause before you get back on track.
“No nicknames,” you blurt. “It’s weird when you call me something endearing. And your flirting feels kind of threatening.”
“What do you mean, baby?”
“See! You’re doing it again.” You cross your arms at the look on his face; anything close to victorious over Jaehyun’s features is unbearable to you.
He raises his arms in exasperation. “How are we supposed to make this work if we act like we don’t care about each other. Guess why Doyoung’s taking us to couple therapy?”
You huff, slightly pissed off. “You’re saying it was my fault?”
“I’m saying we could have avoided that with better acting.”
“You think you’re so—”
The elevator door opens with a ding on the first floor and you turn to find a bunch of interns back from their lunch break. It would be much less of an awkward affair if you and Jaehyun weren’t well into each other’s personal spaces, noses almost touching and with a mutual glare which could be easily mistaken for a look of something more sensual. You jump away from Jaehyun and leave the elevator as fast as you can, feeling far too conscious of yourself. With long strides, you exit the corporate airs of the building to a sunny, fairly populous sidewalk.
Jaehyun catches up to you, bending and trying to catch a glimpse of your face with an incredulous smile over his.
“Don’t say a word, Yoonoh.”
“Ooh, you’re saying my name now.”
“This isn’t funny!”
“I find it plenty funny.”
“That’s because of your trash sense of humour.”
“Mhm.”
“Don’t look so smug.”
Mondays are the days that make you want to scream in agony, not Thursdays—though they are pretty high up on the worst days of the week list. Maybe this was a bad idea. Maybe pretending to be in love with someone you simply cannot be in love with is an awful idea.
Soulmates don’t need to be in love with each other, you think to yourself. There’s plenty of soulmates who are just in it for the financial benefits; you can just pretend to be one of them. This dilemma is starting to fray your nerves and Jung Yoonoh, with his lax disposition and dimpled cheeks, is making it worse. And to top it off, you now have to take him to your favourite (kind of secret) cafe in the name of the lies that slipped your tongue. It was supposed to be a quiet comfort spot for you.
You blow a puff of air out and dismiss the thought. Comfort spots aren’t real anyway when you’re all grown. There’s bound to be a breach.
However, you will not let the (lacking) romance department of your life get sorted out by someone who doesn’t even know you. Lady luck would be an acquaintance to you at most. If fate is a game of chance after all, you might as well be the one spinning the roulette. You look at Jaehyun, piecing together the perfect plan for this seemingly frivolous play-pretend. The game is in your hands now.
Tumblr media
You blink at the figure of Jung Yoonoh under February sunlight on a modestly busy sidewalk. It’s not something to be surprised at—however, the stark contrast in attire makes you stare longer than you intend to. Wearing a black graphic hoodie and pair of worn out jeans, Jaehyun looks about as casual as you can bear. It’s always weird to see coworkers out of formal clothing.
“Are you just going to stare at me till Doyoung comes and picks us up?” he asks.
You roll your eyes.
“You look nice,” he says, and you glance down at your outfit with a flush of heat over your cheeks. It’s just a short A-line skirt, stockings and a sweatshirt. This is as basic as you get. What’s worse is that his comment didn’t sound sarcastic.
“You- You look nice too. I guess.” Once in a while, you will say something extremely stupid and pretend it never happened. The frequency increases around Jaehyun for some damn reason.
“You guess? I’m pretty sure I look more than nice.”
“And how long did you look at yourself in the mirror and practise catchphrases this time?”
Jaehyun’s ears turn the shade of cherries and you press down your smile. You knew that time you caught him talking to himself in front of a car window would play to your advantage.
“What’s that you’re holding?” you ask, eyeing the plastic bag he’s holding.
“Ginseng,” he answers, staring blankly at the cars passing by. “I heard the couples therapist is in his sixties so he might find it useful.”
“Oh, old people stuff,” you muse quietly. “That’s quite thoughtful of you.”
You should’ve brought something, you think for a moment before realizing that couples probably don’t give separate gifts.
“Thanks,” you mutter.
He raises an eyebrow. “For what?”
You shake your head. “Anyway, we might as well kill some time. Twenty questions. Let’s go.”
He laughs. “What are we, in college?”
You wrinkle your nose. “Don’t make us sound like we’re thirty. I bet you’re the kind of guy who has his retirement plan figured out.”
“Wrong,” he emphasizes, face leaning closer.
“Fine. I’ll start the questions, you unsalted block of butter. How many relationships have you been in?”
Jaehyun opens his mouth and closes it, ears turning red. “That’s your first question?”
You roll your eyes. “Okay. I’m guessing it’s single digit and on the lower side.”
He rolls his eyes. “How many relationships have you been in?”
You shut your mouth. There’s a moment of silence, a breeze passing you by, carrying winter away in its arms to make room for spring.
“Never found a relationship worth it,” you mutter, glancing away.
Jaehyun hesitates before opening his mouth. “Me neither.”
“Good thing for us, eh? Love makes people crazy.”
Jaehyun faces you with a clipped smile. Never did you think Jaehyun from marketing would be relating to you on a personal matter.
“Oh, but I’ve had enough hookups and I can bet you’re mediocre at best in bed.”
Jaehyun glares at you. “I am not and I can prove it to you.”
“Is that an invitation into your bed? No, thanks.”
He opens his mouth to retort but is interrupted by the Hyundai Grandeur pulling up to the sidewalk and rolling down the driver window to reveal Doyoung. He looks as overworked as usual, but his eyes are more tired, a bit of makeup covering the dark circles. You’ve heard his soulmate is a makeup artist for an idol group and wonder how they even came to be. Does fate throw darts randomly and pick its choice?
“Get in. Quick,” Doyoung instructs. “I have to drop you off and head home. My family is visiting. I didn’t even get a warning and they think I’m in a gay relationship with Taeyong because we still have our friendship rings from college.”
You want to laugh and agree but Doyoung looks rather pissed off so you hold it in. The two of you do as told, getting in the backseat and shutting the doors in sync. The car smells rather leafy mingling with the scent of fresh clothes and you eye the jar dangling from the rear-view mirror. You open your mouth to ask what scent that is when Doyoung’s voice rings out.
“What’s that?” Doyoung signals to the bag with Jaehyun.
Jaehyun looks down. “Ginseng extract.”
“Oh, the gift pack? Doyoung asks.
Jaehyun nods and Doyoung chuckles, shaking his head. “If that’s for Mr. Lee, forget it. He hates gifts. Something about inward appreciation and shit.”
Jaehyun groans, massaging his forehead. “What do I do with this then? Is this guy a priest?”
“Give it to Doyoung,” you suggest. “His family’s visiting.”
You hear an audible hum of approval from the driver seat and turn to Jaehyun making a face of reluctance. Maybe he isn’t so magnanimous after all, you think smiling.
“You’re both quite tame today,” Doyoung remarks, just when the silence is starting to swallow the inside of the car. “Makes me wonder if you need Mr. Lee after all.”
“We actually don’t…” You shake your head. “We’re here and it’s free so why not?”
Jaehyun shoots you a questioning look. It’s not like you can cancel when you’re in Doyoung’s car and already on the way. You’ve known your boss long enough to know the wrong answer to his questions. You look outside at Seoul streets and sigh.
Jaehyun looks at you, your focus elsewhere and wishes this would end already. He has no idea what overcame him to accept your ridiculous offer but he must be just as ridiculous. At the very least, he finds you quite lovely to look at—not that he’d ever admit it to you. The foundation to this weird bickering friendship (if he can call it that) would be ruined by that. His ego, however, has been boosted up a few notches from the fact that you called him for help. He looks outside the window, holding back a smile. It’s a sunny day.
The therapist, Mr. Lee’s office building is a fancy one with an even fancier lobby. Baby pink leather couches cushion your bum nicely as you wait for your appointment. The architecture is that of a corporate firm and you feel quite at home with the large glass walls by the revolving door. This therapist guy must be rich as hell. The receptionist wears a formal uniform; her blouse is light pink with a grey pencil skirt and you like the look of it. You wonder if asking her where she bought it is time-appropriate. More couples sit around you and you, unfortunately, have to scoot closer to Jaehyun as a result. You do not want to catch that disease they all have. Why are they even here for therapy if they’re smiling at each other in that sickly enamored way?
Now that you’re here, you’re starting to feel that this arrangement was ill-decisive. You should’ve done a better job of acting. You wonder if you can get a refund for that college course on acting, pouting as the ticking wall clock gets on your nerves. Even the marble floors are pink; the walls are mahogany red and there’s a heart-shaped wall clock, and should you glance around more, you’re going to nauseate yourself. This guy certainly takes his job seriously—or just really likes pink-red themes.
A woman in her early thirties exits the elevator and announces your names, and you click your tongue at the fact that she used Jung for your surname. It sounds distasteful.
You follow her, starting to get nervous. You really hope this Mr. Lee isn’t as good as Doyoung says he is. Your fraud falling apart within three days is too embarrassing a defeat, not to mention bordering on illegal if found out. What the fuck does the government care about broken hearts and beneficial relationships? It’s so nosy. You understand the financial situation in case of happily bonded soulmates but apart from that, there really shouldn’t be this much discrepancy in the name of love.
Love drives people crazy. You’d rather not lose your good sense in the name of something so inane. After all, money makes the world go around, not love.
Restricting a gag at the deep red heart on the door, you push them open with Jaehyun to find an old man sitting on a similar baby pink couch as in the lobby. He gets up to greet the two of you, the wrinkles on his face deepening when he smiles. Despite everything, he has a sort of grace to him, the one that comes with growing old elegantly. An upbeat song plays on a record player attached to the wall, although at a very low volume, and the tune reminds you of Animal Crossing.
“Doyoung told me about the two of you,” Mr. Lee says, gesturing at the two of you to sit down. “How long has it been since you found out?”
“Six days,” you answer at the same time Jaehyun answers, “Four days”.
The two of you look at each other.
“Four-Six days. We didn’t keep track.”
“Ah,” Mr. Lee says. “How do you propose to celebrate your anniversary?”
You hesitate opening your mouth and declaring that you don’t really need to do that crap. Mr. Lee notices your expression and breaks into gentle laughter.
“I’m kidding. Anniversary dates don’t matter,” he laughs. “It’s okay to celebrate your 100-day on the wrong day. Don’t worry.”
You purse your lips. To your dismay, Jaehyun isn’t as bothered by the sickly pink environment and Mr. Lee’s relaxed demeanour.
“I have a hundred percent success rate,” Mr. Lee assures the two of you, looking directly at you.
“That’s what I’m worried about,” you mutter under your breath and get a nudge from Jaehyun, who has his politest smile on.
You can’t believe Jaehyun has a better customer service mode than you do. If you didn’t know him, you’d be fooled into thinking he’s the nice guy character every office has. Unfortunately, that one goes to Dongmin. You hate getting stuck with nice guys (unless they offer financial stability).
“I think Doyoung might have been exaggerating,” Jaehyun explains calmly. “Whatever he told you.”
“He told me the two of you have a bickering problem. And staring at each other when the other isn’t looking.”
You cough. “That is not true. The staring part.”
Jaehyun narrows his eyes at you. “I knew you were checking me out,” he mutters.
You roll your eyes. “Keep dreaming, Jaehyun.”
Mr. Lee laughs. “Your bickering seems to be quite affectionate. I don’t know what that boy was worried about.”
You press your lips together into a thin smile, annoyed that anyone would ever describe your interaction with a man as affectionate. It makes you feel like an idiot. You were always better off alone—the universe was wrong to assign Dongmin to you. Maybe you needed to see the apparent love of your life clearly in love with someone else to snap you to reality.
“However, what is a playful lover’s fight in the beginning can turn into real fights.”
“Right,” you mutter. “It’s all fun and games in the beginning.”
“The two of you have almost no animosity—you’ve known each other before you discovered the soulmark, right?”
The two of you nod, having already reconciled yourselves to this session. It’s a one-time thing, you tell yourself. It will be over soon.
“The soulmate information shouldn’t influence the relationship you already had. If anything, it should be drawing you closer. First time awkwardness is common.”
He’s starting to sound a lot like your high school sex ed teacher. You get the idea to pretend to be sick and get out of this early.
“Company policy too,” Jaehyun mutters. “Unofficial company policy makes office romance out to be some sort of sacrilege.”
“You know, I was the CEO of your company so I do know the policies,” Mr. Lee says, smiling in the confident, reserved way senior citizens offering wisdom do.
You choke on the water you were taking a sip of, a coughing fit overcoming you and Jaehyun hesitates before awkwardly patting your back.
“Huh? CEO? I’m sorry?” you manage.
Mr. Lee lets out a loud, hearty laugh. “I stepped down two years ago.”
“That’s when I joined,” you and Jaehyun say at the same time.
Mr. Lee smiles at the two of you wordlessly. “I have an idea for the two of you. Why don’t you try turning your ‘I’s into ‘we’s? Do some activities together and when you talk about it, you’ll find yourself much closer.”
You narrow your eyes. “You know, Mr. Lee, I’m a little curious about your relation with the company—”
“My recommendations won’t help you get promotions faster.”
“Dammit.”
Jaehyun chuckles beside you but a glare from you turns it into a suppressed smile. The one thing that wouldn’t be a waste of time opened its door and closed it right back.
“But you know how promotions work,” you press, leaning forward.
An alarm rings, so pleasant in tone that you know it’s a Samsung. Unfortunately, it’s the ugly flip model and you question Mr. Lee’s taste (and wealth).
“Oh, look, time’s up,” Mr. Lee announces, and you think you catch a hint of nervousness in his voice.
Jaehyun springs up before his ears turn red, embarrassed by the gusto with which he himself got up and looks at you expectantly. You get up, sighing.
“Next time, Mr. Lee,” you warn. “I will get those details.”
“I charge by the hour.” He smiles.
“Stop threatening the therapist,” Jaehyun mutters to you, taking your arm and turning to leave.
“Oh, and,” Mr. Lee calls. “It’s always better to be honest than to pretend.”
You blink in surprise when Jaehyun tugs at your arm, bowing in thanks and leaving the room with you.
“Was it just me or did he see through us?” you whisper to Jaehyun.
He shakes his head, whispering back, “There’s no way he could tell. He’s probably referring to something else.”
“Like what?”
Jaehyun doesn’t answer.
“Tell me, are you always so domineering towards strangers even?” he asks. “I just thought you liked to press my buttons because I’m easygoing.”
You scoff. “Don’t flatter yourself. You’re not as cool as you think you are, especially since you get so hot and bothered by me.”
“It’s just you,” he whispers earnestly and your pulse rises. “No one else.”
You cough to kill the awkward silence and walk faster to the elevator. Jaehyun follows at a leisurely pace and it’s never occurred to you before but the sound of someone’s footsteps can also be annoying, proof currently standing beside you.
The elevator doors open, and much to your appallment, a young couple happens to be full blown making out inside the elevator, hands where there certainly shouldn’t be in broad daylight. Jaehyun whips his face away, clearing his throat loud enough for the couple to detach themselves from each other and hurriedly exit, fixing their clothes on the way.
“So he wasn’t lying about the success rate,” Jaehyun states quietly, a look of resigned horror on his face.
You can’t even respond for a few moments, following him into the elevator and shaking your head to get rid of the thought that inevitably jams itself inside your head. It might have a point, however.
"Maybe we should kiss too," you think out loud.
Jaehyun stiffens, looking at you with wide, fearful eyes. "No."
"We have to kiss, we're dating!" You exclaim, hands on your hips.
"We're not actually—ah, whatever. It’s not worth bickering with you."
"Why? Afraid you'll fall in love with me?”
Jaehyun shakes his head, and you’re suddenly aware that your bickering keeps drawing you closer to each other, your faces nearer than you’d realized.
"If anything," he starts with a confident smile. "You better not fall in love with me."
"Oh, please. You're taking this way too seriously."
"You're the one that wants to kiss me."
Your cheeks heat up. "You're- I- That's not—argh, fuck you."
Jaehyun looks smug, and you have the unstoppable urge to punch it off his face. You take a deep breath. Violence is not the way, (name).
“If we were a few years younger, you’d be begging for mercy under me,” you seethe.
Jaehyun’s eyes shift over your face in confusion, ears burning bright red with each passing second. Before he can open his mouth, you let out a short yell.
“Not like that, you pervert,” you say, leaning away from him.
“I didn’t even say anything. On an unrelated note, were you a delinquent in school?”
You roll your eyes. “Kind of. I had a temper and a sharp tongue.”
“And now you’re a people pleaser. That’s quite the development.”
You smack his shoulder. “You’re getting on my nerves, punk.”
He makes an ‘oh’ with his mouth before smiling. “You totally did the delinquent accent.”
“I’m guessing you were the shy, little boy who flushed red at conversations about kissing.”
Jaehyun clears his throat in annoyance. “I was not. I was quite popular in high school and college, you know?”
“Yeah,” you mutter. “It’s that face of yours.”
“Sorry, what? I didn’t catch that.”
“Oh, look, we’re on the first floor.” You exit the elevator, leaving a puzzled Jaehyun to follow in stumbling steps.
“I don’t think Doyoung’s picking us up,” you state. “You take the bus? Or do you have a car to flex? I don’t ride in anything below a Tesla, unless it’s Doyoung because he’s technically my boss.”
“You’ll have to do with good old rented Hyundais,” he answers.
You exhale. Maybe he’s getting used to you. The bus stop is opposite the building, the structure squeaky clean and a bunch of people waiting on the seats. It’s a busy place and you wonder if the scammy-therapist-slash-your-former-ceo’s business has anything to do with that. You sit the first chance you get, shoulders pressed against Jaehyun’s for the lack of space and admiring the passing traffic. Seoul really just depends on the lenses you see through. Work days make the screen tinted grey and blue and you hate them often but some days, it’s good to experience those. Weekends are brighter, sunny and usually not with Jaehyun but he doesn’t really put a damper on them either.
You scan his side profile, a little envious when you realize that his confidence isn’t misplaced. You might have trained yourself to be more of a pleaser over the years but he’s the sort of person people come to like naturally. Moreover, his skin is perfect and his hair is always looking styled even in a mess. Fate and Life are partners in crime when it comes to being unfair.
Jaehyun turns to look at you and you snap your head to your lap, turning on your phone and staring at the homescreen for a good few seconds.
“Twenty questions,” Jaehyun announces. “Let’s play again. I’ll go first. Do you check me out when I walk away?”
“What is this, playing my own cards against me?” You scoff. “You’re so full of yourself.”
“So, yes or no?”
“Sometimes,” you mutter. “But it’s not the good kind of checking out. I’m checking out how terrible you look with your mess of a tie.”
Jaehyun laughs, the sound a hearty rumbling sort and you can’t help but smile back at that. It’s kind of cute when he laughs—the sound of it and the way his cheeks are dusted pink.
“My turn,” you say with a cheeky smile as you lean in to whisper. “Have you ever had a wet dream about me?”
Jaehyun chokes on air, coughing out the surprise as he stares at you dumfound. You stick the tip of your tongue out and throw him a wink, thoroughly enjoying this victory against him. It feels great to fluster someone like Jaehyun.
“No,” he says with clear emphasis.
“Even the night you said I was so unbearably hot very loudly to Sicheng?”
Jaehyun leans back sighing, covering his face with his hand. “I was tipsy. And it was my first night out with coworkers. Give me a break.”
You giggle. “Honestly, it wasn’t that bad. There were worse incidents that night. An intern threw up on Doyoung’s shoes—I can’t even imagine the horror the poor girl experienced.”
Jaehyun shakes his head, smiling through his hand.
“Have you ever sent nudes?” you ask, wiggling your eyebrows.
He sighs. “Maybe. Have you?”
“Oh, wouldn’t you like to know?”
He curls his lips. The answer seems to be no but you’re at least seventy percent sure he would be attracted to you in a world where your personality traits weren’t being nosy and annoying.
“Do you think you’re a good kisser?” Jaehyun asks, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees.
“Definitely.”
He scoffs, a smile tugging at his lips.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You cross your arms.
He shrugs, leaning in slightly as though flirting (if he had the audacity). “We could test that.”
You feel your cheeks heat up. “What happened to no kissing in the contract?”
“It’s not officially there.”
You roll your eyes, glancing away. “You know, I’m starting to believe you were some sort of desperate fuckboy in college.”
“I- I was the hottest dude on campus and if we went to the same college, you would be pining after me. I literally had the Campus Prince title and girls would follow me to see me in class.”
He crosses his arms, a frown tugging down his lips.
“Ooh, Jung Yoonoh’s getting fired up,” you say in a monotonous voice. “Wonder how many girls you pulled with your chewed up fuckboy dialogue.”
Jaehyun scoffs but he clearly finds your accusations amusing, as hinted by his unbothered smile. He asks a question again.
“What’s more important to you—truth or happiness?”
The question catches you off-guard. Jaehyun’s eyes are delicately curious, nothing too strong and even so, you find yourself holding your breath under his gaze.
“Huh?”
“Twenty questions. We were playing?” Jaehyun raises an eyebrow.
“Right.” You clear your throat, rubbing the back of your hand. “I… I’d choose happiness, I think. I’m… I’m not sure.”
“Really?” He doesn’t look too hellbent on taking apart your answer so you breathe out. He’s starting to pry into you finally. “I think the truth will make you happier.”
“That’s not- that’s not always true.” You look away, hoping the quietness of your voice ends the conversation there. You don’t know how to talk about it—you never really have. You’ve ugly cried over the lack of your love life to a stranger after five shots of whiskey but you don’t think you can talk about things like this sober. You don’t even know why you answered. Jaehyun makes you feel oddly comfortable.
Jaehyun shrugs, getting up when the next bus halts in front.
“What did you major in?” you ask, following him.
“Business,” he answers before thinking. “Kind of hated it. But I started out with IT and that was somehow worse.”
You gasp, taking a seat beside him on the bus. “I started with IT too! It was a nightmare. You took that Database Management course?”
Jaehyun smiles. “It was like the course equivalent of reading the back of a Wi-Fi Router.”
You laugh. Maybe he isn’t so different after all.
“You know, you do look like a business major,” you hum, furrowing your brows as you pretend to scrutinise him.
“So, you’re indirectly saying I either look like a rich kid or a jackass.” Jaehyun raises an eyebrow.
“They’re both the same thing.”
The laughter from the two of you makes an old woman behind you grunt in displeasure and the two of you apologize. It’s nice to talk like college kids again. The Seoul sunlight shines on Jaehyun’s face and you bite back a smile when his dimples appear. They aren’t all that bad. If you get along like this, there’s no reason to worry about fate and the universe and other superfluous things offered to you on a boring old ceramic plate. It’s a smooth ride.
Your eyes drift to Dongmin’s workspace instinctively and you shake your head. This is exactly why you were avoiding him and even started the entire fake relationship with Jaehyun. You’d choose fake dating a (good-looking) chump from management over embarrassment and possible heartbreak any day.
You groan internally before glancing again and find the desk empty. Surprised, you blink and turn only to scream at Dongmin’s figure behind you.
“Shh!” he says urgently. “Don’t move. And don’t panic when I say this but there’s a bug on your shoulder.”
“What the fuck? Get it off, please,” you say, voice choking up.
Dongmin rolls up a stack of papers and you let out a low screech. “Don’t kill it on my shoulder!”
“Sorry,” he says and your eyes soften as he gently pushes the paper against your shoulder and takes it away. You breathe a sigh of relief and he signs you a thumbs up as he wiggles the paper in the air outside the window.
“You saved me,” you say, smiling.
He returns it, his most beloved eye smile making you wonder if you made the right choice. Wouldn’t it be fun to just crash everything and watch it burn? You know you want to. Benevolence and grace were never your style. However, it’s his smile again that stops you. Maybe you don’t really want to be the bad guy after all. You’re sparing him from confusion and dread.
You’re sparing yourself from rejection and inevitable loneliness (yay).
It’s been a week, discussing details with Jaehyun before the both of you collectively decided to just wing it and hope you’re not caught. After all, there’s no real way to prove you’re not soulmates if you’re careful enough (the same way you can’t prove someone’s cheating if they’re careful enough but that’s quite a depressing analogy). Perhaps if you renounce the soulmate benefits (and Dongmin didn’t smile as often at you), it would be less morally taxing. You, however, are greedy. When you want something, you’ll do anything to get it.
You stare at the computer screen and sigh, cross checking the employee records for incorrect data and your eyelids start to droop. Of all the days, you just had to be assigned the most boring task on a Friday. You also should’ve gotten sleep instead of getting mad at Jaehyun’s dry responses to your plan of action. It was perfectly viable; unnecessary, but perfect nonetheless.
Soojin rolls her chair backwards into yours. “We’re going drinking tonight. Wanna come? You can bring your boy-toy too.”
You roll your eyes. “As much as I’d love to call him that, he’s still the chump from marketing for me.”
“Or,” Soojin emphasizes. “Your actual soulmate. How lucky is it that you work in the same building, in the same company?”
“I’m not sure if you’re being ironic.” You scroll through the database with trained eyes.
“I’m not. A lot of soulmates don’t even get to see each other because of their line of work. It’s so tragic.”
You’d be glad if you didn’t get to see Dongmin ever too. But you’ll keep that to yourself. You hum in response and hear a sigh from behind you.
“Let’s have fun,” she whines. “Is Jaehyun that much of a downer? He’s one of the hottest dudes in the building. I thought you’d be cheery.”
You pause and think to yourself. She does have a point. You’re definitely supposed to look happier. Your soulmate has the looks of a model and fifteen year old you would fawn over him no doubt.
“It’s the work,” you answer. “I’m working overtime to compensate for my rent.”
You work overtime anyway because you hate heading home to an empty apartment.
“Ah, you signed a new lease, right? Near Songpa?” Soojin looks at you with pity and pats your shoulder. “You know what? I’ll treat you to drinks tonight. You deserve a day off, missy.”
You smile. “Thanks, Soojin.”
“And,” she adds in a singsong voice. “The love of your life is here.”
You furrow your eyebrows before tilting your head and almost sighing in exasperation at the figure of Jung Yoonoh outside the glass door. He may not show it, but you know distress when you see it. You’ve seen enough squirming undergraduates at company interviews.
You quickly get up from your seat, praying that he didn’t mess something up. However, you find it cute when he looks like this, the urge to fluster him even more presenting itself to be rather tempting.
“I think you have a sick obsession with me, Jaehyun.” You cross your arms after closing the door behind you.
He exhales, closing his eyes for a moment before taking your arm and pulling you away from the door.
“Woah, this isn’t high school. You can’t just pull me into a corner to make out.”
Jaehyun’s ears flare hot red and he clears his throat. “You’re in high spirits today.”
You weren’t, actually. Somehow, teasing Jaehyun gives you the same rush as caffeine. You just love when the nonchalance on his face turns into discomposure.
“I came to give Doyoung these files. Or you, since you’re practically his assistant.”
You ignore his comment. “There’s clearly something else.”
“The team sports event is coming up,” Jaehyun starts, hesitating. “I’m not managing it this year. I have to participate.”
“So?”
“So Dongmin has a higher chance of finding us out. What if he sees my mark in the changing room and it all goes to shit?”
“Great! He’ll think you’re his soulmate and I’ll be spared from this nonsense.”
“I’m being serious. It’s already difficult living with Sicheng and having to change with my doors locked. It’s kind of suspicious.”
“Do you guys sleep naked with each other or what?”
“No, but I do sleep with my shirt off.”
“Ugh. Why would you give me that image?” you complain. The image isn’t bad per se but it’s not what you need right now.
“You clearly liked it,” he mutters.
You furrow your eyebrows. “You’re not doing this just to give me a load of unnecessary anxiety, are you? Do you know how swamped with work I am?”
“No, of course not,” he answers, no indication of which question he answered. “Also, is there a reason Soojin’s glaring at me?”
You wave your hand in dismissal. “It’s just the haven’t-warmed-up-to-coworker’s-new-boyfriend glare. Don’t worry about it.”
He doesn’t seem too relieved but you have more anxious thoughts invading the privacy of your Friday evening. You have to keep up your composure. It could happen one way or another, perhaps in a situation better than a team sports activity, but you have to figure it out. You reject your soulmate anyway—the same way he would.
Glaring at Jaehyun one last time, you get back to your desk. Jaehyun looks at your receding figure and finds himself checking you out, the largest blow he’s taken to his dignity. He shakes his head, breathing in and out. This is so not like him. He’s supposed to be the suave, handsome guy who people can’t seem to get to and yet—yet, you do it so easily. It’s unfair. He swallows his heart and tells himself he’s too old to feel this way. He’ll just drown himself in work and pretend love is a commodity like everyone else with a corporate job is supposed to.
“You know,” Soojin starts when you get back. “Jaehyun kind of looks high if you look at him long enough. Weed is illegal though but who knows? Maybe he’s a bad boy deep down after all.”
“Which rumour have you been paying attention to now?” You sigh deeply.
Soojin laughs. “It’s funny to hear everyone’s opinions. Even if most of them turn into scandalous tall tales.”
“Anyway,” she continues. “I’m clocking out. I’ll get Jaehyun to take you to the sake bar.”
You look at her, puzzled.
“You’re a matching set now,” she follows up and you groan.
“Don’t give me that cr—”
“Toodle-oo! Let’s have some fun before we’re grey and old, eh?”
You sigh and nod. Maybe you should look into a caffeine fix, even if it costs you a mental power outage at the end of the rush. It’s not like you to be so down on a Friday but alas, Fate is as miserable a woman as you are. The sake bar is starting to sound good.
Or, you could always watch a few ASMR cooking videos instead of staring blankly at the employee records. Either way, this Friday better improve by tonight.
Tumblr media
“This is going great,” Soojin says, louder than she probably intended after her fourth shot.
“Of course it is,” you mutter.
You haven’t yet had a chance to drink more because of two reasons: one) Soojin is hogging the alcohol and two) it would be embarrassing to get drunk in front of Jaehyun. Adding to your misery, Soojin has been gushing over her soulmate and the way she always makes breakfast for Soojin, listing off every single recipe she’s made. You would love to listen but you’re a tiny bit past your limit.
“Wooh, Jaehyun, you look hot,” Soojin whistles, in more of an older sister manner. “I can almost see your tattoo. Why don’t the two of you show us at the same time and we can take a commemorative picture?”
You cough loudly. “Mine’s on my waist, Soojin. I’m not ready to expose skin.”
“Right. Sorry.” She turns back at lightning speed to bother Dongmin with her stories, who smiles at her politely. It seems so genuine that you’re slightly enamored with it for a moment. There’s Jungwoo from marketing beside him, some more HR employees and thankfully, no interns. Doyoung is the only one partly miserable in the lot, talking into the phone for half an hour now.
“Shit.” Jaehyun nudges you and whispers, “I forgot about the tattoo. This T-shirt makes it very visible.”
You look at him, alarmed. You fix his jacket, startling him, and pull the zipper all the way to his neck, making sure to backhand him on the chin.
“There.”
“It’s hot in here.”
“What do you want me to do about it? God, you’re like a child.”
“I’m like a—okay. Just cover my tattoo with foundation or something.”
“You think I carry around a whole bottle of foundation?”
Jaehyun blinks, deeming it safer to keep his mouth shut.
“Okay. Fine. I have an idea. Come to the washroom with me.”
“Oh my, this isn’t your making out in the corner type of thing, right?”
You glare at him and he shuts up, following you quietly to the surprisingly clean restroom. The fact that it isn’t gendered makes you very glad. You make Jaehyun sit on the low enough basin counter and push your knee against it to balance yourself as you take out a permanent marker from your bag.
“I hope Doyoung doesn’t fire me for sneaking away,” you mutter angrily. “He didn’t even make me receive his calls all day.”
Jaehyun scoffs lightly. “Please, Doyoung adores you and your work ethic. He talks about it more than what I need to overhear. That and Taeyong’s detailed aquarium maintenance rules.”
“He does?”
Jaehyun clears his throat and you hold back bombing him with more questions till you’re done with painting an arrow into his tattoo.
“Isn’t it weird?” He looks at you with round, curious eyes. “Yours is a heart. Mine’s a pierced heart.”
“Hm. Funny coincidence.”
“Do you have to sit on my lap for this?”
“I’m not sitting on your lap,” you hiss. You are kind of close. You train your eyes on his collarbone as you pull his neckline down.
It would be so embarrassing to be caught like this. You’d rather be caught making out with someone in the broom closet. You hold back a pained sigh. Jaehyun has some nerve speaking to you when you’re already annoyed with him. Couldn’t he just have worn his business attire? Why does he get to go home early? Taeyong is far too lenient a boss. You start swearing internally, getting nervous when you think about the consequences of your actions.
“Has anyone ever filed a complaint against you?” Jaehyun asks, and you nudge his chin upwards to draw the line on his tattoo.
“For what? Being perfect and successful?”
“For that attitude. The ‘take what I want’ attitude.”
You roll your eyes. “No. You’re saying it like I’m awful to the core for trying to take what I want. I haven’t got such a bad soul, you know, as souls go. You wouldn't write articles about how good a soul it is but… it’s well enough.”
Jaehyun raises an eyebrow and you avert your gaze from his eyes. This sort of proximity shouldn’t be bothering you, you shouldn’t be rambling.
The door opens right then and in a fit of panic, you do the unthinkable. You press your lips to Jaehyun’s and pray that whoever walked in has no idea who you are and more importantly, can’t see the permanent marker in your hand.
“I’m so sorry!”
You know that voice. You half regret it when you hear it. Dongmin exits the bathroom as quickly as he entered and you pull away to look at the empty space. Beside you, Jaehyun stays so still that you forget he’s there for a moment. You breathe out in relief though part of you still feels a heavy ounce of regret.
You turn back to Jaehyun and find his doe eyes soft and lost in thought.
“I get it now,” Jaehyun whispers. “It must hurt. That he doesn’t care about the system.”
“What are you talking about?”
“That he’s so reckless about discarding you.”
You separate yourself from him further, standing up and brushing your clothes. “You’re overstepping.”
“Sorry,” he responds quietly.
There’s a pause.
“Did you just kiss me right now?”
“Shut up. I didn’t want him to see us and especially this.” You wave the marker in front of his face.
“You just kissed me in a fit of panic. That’s the first time I’ve seen someone respond to panic this way.” Jaehyun looks a little too smug.
“What are you implying?”
“You wanted to kiss me.”
You scoff. “Don’t get too ahead of yourself.”
You want to knock the smile right off his face but you stick to flicking his forehead, his yell of surprise satisfying. This Friday night was supposed to get better. In fact, you are going to make it better if life won’t. The soju won’t drink itself and you deem that Soojin has had enough.
Ignoring Dongmin’s confused look, you order far too many soju shots to be considered healthy. As you promised yourself, you are going to make this Friday better.
//
You just had to go and get drunk. Jaehyun stares at you, blinking slowly and wondering just how much you can embarrass yourself before it becomes a burden for him. He has to get you home; you’re practically a matching set now. But are the halves of a pair supposed to take care of the other when they get drunk?
“You know what, guys?” You announce, standing up abruptly and immediately getting pulled back to your seat by Jaehyun. It doesn’t stop your mouth however.
“I hate the stupid system,” you continue. “To tell the truth—”
He smacks his hand over your mouth. Jaehyun has had enough of the silent mini heart attacks you give him. The rest look at him with puzzled looks and he can’t even bring himself to give them a polite smile before dragging you out of the bar. The night breeze is cold enough—maybe it’ll sober you up.
"You're so annoying, Jaehyun," you mutter, massaging your forehead. "Did you know that?"
Or maybe it won’t.
"Never heard that before."
"How do you always keep to yourself and still be the center of attention?" You cling to his arm for balance.
"Have you considered that maybe a polite man isn't as scheming as you think he is?"
You curl your lips. "Stop using big sentences. I hate that I barely know you, and I know everyone."
Jaehyun purses his lips. "You just enjoy the power that comes with figuring people out. Don't you?"
"Whatever you say. I want life to be a nice and smooth ride but then again, I can't even face my soulmate." You let out an airy laugh. "I didn't really need one though."
Jaehyun laughs in disbelief. "You look like you're dying of loneliness."
"Ooh, that's a big claim, Yoonoh."
"You say I keep to myself but what about you? You like hiding, don't you?"
You laugh. "Is this the part where I say we're nothing alike?"
He purses his lips, shaking his head in dismissal. He's just tired of chit-chat with someone who smells like she robbed a liquor store in Itaewon.
“You must think I’m some sort of selfish, vapid, work-obsessed overachiever,” you continue, tilting your head with a blank look in your eyes.
“Well, not exac—”
“But guess what? Your opinions are invalid, Jung Yoonoh. You’re just some chump from marketing. A very good-looking chump but still.”
Jaehyun swears under his breath as you fling your arms open in the same manner a speech-giving patriot fighting for freedom would. Unfortunately, the freedom struggle is private in this day and age, and you just smacked him in the nose instead.
You sigh deeply and he looks at you again, warily now as he holds his nose.
“You’re not exactly wrong either. I’m so empty. Like a bottle of soju with no soju. Could you bring me some?”
Jaehyun massages his temples and solidifies his resolve. He’s had enough stares from people on the sidewalk. With delicate concern, he holds you up with one arm around your waist, balancing your weight evenly so you can stand. Promptly, you bury your face into his neck and an embarrassing, high-pitched squeak evades the filter of his mouth. You’re just so adept at making his days (and nights) worse.
Jaehyun tries his best to carry you to the parking lot without any signs of struggle but good lord, are you uncooperative. Once he’s down lugging you to the passenger seat, he breathes out in relief at long last and makes sure you don’t fold in over yourself dozing off the seat. Getting you to sit up, he finds himself smiling the slightest bit at your smudged lipstick. Even like this, you’re quite pretty.
Realizing what thought came over him, he shakes his head vigorously as if he’s committing a horrible crime. He just has to get you home—Soojin had texted him the address prior to the outing just in case—and then he can go back to pretending whatever he even is supposed to.
The sports event is really just HR and Management trying to one-up the other in a more quantitative way. You’re not really fond of the sweat and heavy breathing that comes with physical exertion if it’s for the sake of competition. Competition is such a childish, masculine way of handling things, especially emotions.
HR is leading in wins, however and that means you have something to rub in Jaehyun’s face. You hate participating but you’re not allowed to opt out without a medical certificate. At least one competition, and you had to choose the three-legged race. All these potential partners, and Dongmin had to choose you.
“I’ll win,” you tell Jaehyun, stopping by him once you exit the changing room. The indoor stadium is usually a recreational facility for senior employees but on sports day, it’s closer to a gladiator arena. The seats are green and occupied by grinning employees, most of them glad for a day off but also upset they don’t get to attend their personal affairs in it.
Jaehyun stops himself from rolling his eyes. “Shouldn’t it be a ‘we’? You need a partner. Oh, are you sad you can’t pick me?”
“Not at all.” You cross your arms, annoyed at his mock pity.
Right then, Dongmin jogs up to you in a blue tracksuit. His hair sticks to his forehead because unlike you, he takes sports very seriously. Jaehyun, on the other hand, just seems to enjoy the competition. As a guilty pleasure, you’d like to see the two of them compete one day. That would be a competition worth betting on.
“I’ll have to borrow your soulmate.” Dongmin laughs. “The race is starting.”
Life strikes again with its poorly timed irony.
“Don’t mind me,” Jaehyun says politely.
The race is easier than you thought it would be considering most of the other employees struggle with teamwork. You’re the HR team for a reason. But then again, you feel a certain hollowness pervade you while you’re pressed to Dongmin’s side. Wouldn’t it be nice?
All you can think is that Dongmin and you are perfectly in sync. The realization comes off as sad despite your victory and the wide grins on both of your faces.
Jaehyun purses his lips and gives the two of you a nonchalant look. He’s avoided getting caught in the changing room quite well. For some reason, he’s glad that you’re winning but also dissatisfied about it. He would certainly feel different if he were participating in that race, wouldn’t he? He would win. Losing a competition is a huge blow to his ego. Lately, he seems to be losing a lot of races. The two of you have been growing closer and he doesn’t mind late night discussions about flawed systems and childhood memories; but the fact that you’re growing on him is something for him to be on edge about. He’s never felt so close to someone, and still so far.
“Oh, they have good chemistry, don’t they?” Doyoung comments beside Jaehyun, before taking a sip from his bottle.
“What chemistry?” Jaehyun snaps and Doyoung almost chokes on the water.
“Chill out, man.” Doyoung eyes Jaehyun’s figure in concern. “She’s like officially yours.”
Jaehyun refuses in a series of sputtering responses. “That’s not what I meant. I’m not jealous. I’m not that kind of man.”
“I didn’t paint you as that kind of man either,” Doyoung mutters before speaking up. “But love, Jaehyun. Love’s a weird thing.”
Jaehyunn ignores his comment and walks down to the grounds, jogging up to you. He immediately forgets to say anything at all. Smooth move, Yoonoh.
You just stick out your tongue at him subtly.
“I told you we’d win,” you say.
Jaehyun crosses his arms. “Congratulations. I thought you, quote, hate this stupid competition for dunces.”
You clear your throat and Dongmin laughs beside you. Before he can offer his bottle, Jaehyun offers his own in a rush. You raise an eyebrow but don’t question it.
“You guys really are a perfect pair.” Dongmin laughs. “Sometimes I wish Mijoo was my soulmate.”
You give him a pitiful smile. There go your happy feelings of victory.
“But I’m happy this way.” Dongmin nudges your shoulder with his. “Don’t give me that look.”
That is not the look he thinks you were giving. You smile.
“What about this? We can go on a double date! Those are fun, right?” Dongmin muses, crossing his arms.
“No,” you and Jaehyun refuse in a panic, and Dongmin blinks in confusion at the overwhelming response.
“I'm more of a homebody,” you explain.
“Yeah, me too,” Jaehyun agrees.
It makes Dongmin laugh aloud. “Oh, fate didn’t go wrong with the two of you.”
Your smile wavers. Did it go so wrong with you and Dongmin? Jaehyun’s hand brushes yours and you look at him. A perfect side profile and flushed hot cheeks with dimples to die for. You wouldn’t mind being in love with him. You don’t mind love much at all.
Shaking off the thought, you watch as Dongmin leaves the two of you to run to the changing rooms. Eyeing Jaehyun’s red team sweatshirt with “Management” in big typography over the chest, you look back up to his face.
“Why did you jog over here so desperately?” You wiggle your eyebrows. “Jealous?”
“Yes. I am irreparably in love with you.”
He leans in quickly and you flinch, making his dimples show up.
“Asshole,” you curse. “I’ll file you for harassment. Don’t do that again.”
“Isn’t it harassment when you feel me up while you draw—” Jaehyun leans in to whisper. “—the soulmark?”
“I would never have my hands near your greasy existence if I could,” you huff, scandalized.
But the thing is, Jaehyun is getting better at this game of flustering each other and you don’t like it one bit.
“Hey, you know Dongmin’s girlfriend?” he asks suddenly.
You nod. “Kind of. I’ve seen her pictures on Instagram.”
Jaehyun pauses before humming in realization.
You cough. “Not that I was stalking them or something. Obviously.”
Jaehyun gives you a knowing smile but doesn’t question anything, much to your aggravation. It would’ve been better if you had a chance to prove you weren’t stalking them but then again, that is exactly what you were doing.
“Well, we went to the same college. Same major too.”
“Are you serious? Wait, how do you know? Does this mean you stalked their Instagram too?”
“Too?”
“Shut up.”
There’s a beat of silence.
“She’s not exactly the evil homewrecker type,” he says.
“I know that,” you snap. If anything, you feel like the evil homewrecker even if Dongmin’s supposed to be your soulmate.
They’re so reckless. Jaehyun was right—you do blame them in a way. They don’t care who they trample under their nauseating parade of romance. But then again, that parade is better than a personal rejection.
“I’m just saying… don't hold it against them.”
“I don’t remember asking for advice, Jung Yoonoh.”
Jaehyun shrugs, dropping the issue. The preparations for the next race is starting and it has something to do with passing balls from basket to basket—you get bored already when you see Doyoung stretch before shaking hands with Taeyong.
“Wanna get ice-cream? We funded the food truck this year.” Jaehyun looks expectantly at you.
“Sure.”
You contemplate holding his hand for a moment but let that thought bury itself. You don’t have to pretend right now.
Much to your despair (or delight) however, Jaehyun takes your hand absentmindedly as he walks towards the exit. It’s not that you’ve never held hands before, it’s just that Jaehyun’s skin is soft against yours.
“I can’t believe you and Mijoo were in the same course.”
It seems she’s ahead of you in every direction you look to tread on. Of course, you will not be telling Jaehyun that. You don’t exactly feel jealousy—can’t feel jealousy when your life is perfect as it is. And for Jaehyun? You hate to admit it but you’d trade places with Mijoo any day.
“Well, she didn’t really like socializing back then so I didn’t know we were in the same program either.”
You chuckle, glancing down at your intertwined fingers despite your best efforts. It feels nice like this. It feels nice to be wanted by someone—even if it’s a lie.
“Do you think- Do you think they’re brave?” You ask. “They didn’t even hesitate to disregard the system.”
“I think people in love are always brave.”
You hum, looking down at your feet. All the more reason the system fucked up. You were never even supposed to be partnered up. You’re not brave—the face you put on is. The idea of love seems to get further and further away from you.
Just then, Jaehyun tugs at your hand, walking slightly faster and making you complain as you jog to catch up with his long strides. The food truck is fairly large, on the street outside to the stadium entrance. February is catching up with its heat and you curse at global warming for this hot winter day.
“You can take up to five scoops of different flavours,” he informs you, grinning sheepishly. “I guess the cups aren’t large enough for beyond that.”
“I didn’t know you were this passionate about ice-cream,” you say.
“Sicheng rubbed off on me.”
You laugh. IT must have given Sicheng enough stress to develop a sweet tooth. You love the HR Department when you look at the others in your company.
Jaehyun has a nice smile. You don’t know why you think that but you do and now you can’t focus on anything apart from the pink dust sprinkled over his cheeks and the handsome dimples that accompany. You don’t want to stare but clearly, Jaehyun must have been blessed by some divide being if not for fate. Maybe he’s a mess up like you. As far as you know, his soulmate doesn’t exist. That little red heart is so simple that none of the soulmate designs match it.
A rather repulsing part of you is happy about it. You like the feel of Jaehyun’s hands. You like the way he looks at you. You wouldn’t mind it if he were yours.
Tumblr media
Jaehyun’s house is as cosy as his mother makes you feel. It’s been a while since you’ve been home and if you were perhaps less emotionally constipated, you would have tears welling up in your eyes. There’s quite a few relatives too but then again, every Asian family jumps at the chance to celebrate something as mediocre as engagements and marriage and soulmate findings. Apparently, hormones are perfectly fine to them once you’re not teenagers anymore.
This isn’t so bad. What was so scary about meeting parents again? Jaehyun’s dad did challenge you with a questionnaire but lucky for you, you know exactly how interviews work. You’ve got enough information on Jaehyun from the man himself for this visit. The briefing he gave you was boring though; you already know what you need to know about Jaehyun.
You sit at the table, while most of the other guests work in the kitchen. Jaehyun’s mother asks you questions about your life, friendly and welcoming in every way possible. Mothers are truly god-sent. You wonder how she produced someone as far from divine as Jaehyun. (Except in looks, perhaps.)
You say that out loud and get a sharp quip from Jaehyun, his mother’s eyes lighting up at your childish interaction.
“Oh my, fate is never wrong!” She remarks with a wide smile. “I’ve never seen Jaehyun open up so much with anyone before. He was such a shy boy in school, you know? All the girls would send letters and confessions and he would just turn red in the face.”
“Mom.” He smiles all too sweet at her but you can see the panic in his eyes.
She rolls her eyes before turning to you. “Darling, you have no idea how proud I feel to see him this at ease. I was honestly getting tired of all the ‘your son is so polite and well-mannered’ comments. Some bickering ought to do him good.”
“Mom,” he repeats, straightening. “I think auntie needs some help setting up the table.”
“Don’t shoo me away yet. I have to tell (name) about the time you were elected class representative in middle school. And all those sports and acting awards.”
“You don’t have to advertise me, Mom,” he says, dropping his face into his hands to rub at his eyes, already growing tired. “I’m already- I’m already hers.”
His mother coos and apart from the expected deep red flush on Jaehyun’s skin, you find yourself feeling hot in the face too. Jaehyun’s aunt calls for his mother right then and you watch as she makes her way to the kitchen entrance, the two women glancing at you and giggling to each other over some shared words.
Jaehyun takes the opportunity to grab your hand and walk away to a more obscure part of the house upstairs. With significantly less relatives, it should be a good hiding spot unless discovered by his giggling cousins that he refuses to introduce you to.
“Aw, what a shy baby,” you coo, smiling at the thought of a younger, easily-flustered Jaehyun.
His ears are bright red and you think that he’s still easily flustered. He just doesn’t show it much anymore—there’s only one dead giveaway.
“Forget everything my mom said,” he instructs. “It’s not important information.”
“Oh, no, darling. Your mother is a gold mine of vital information. You know what? I’m going to go chat her up right now. I’m sure you were quite the teenage dream I should know about.”
Jaehyun grips your wrist before you can escape, pulling your closer.
“Don’t.”
You don’t know if it’s the proximity or the fact that there are most definitely a few family members that could walk in right now—but you find yourself embarrassed as you look at his face. It’s very pleasant, handsome even, and the strands of his hair look irresistibly soft from this distance. You reach your hand out and brush the hair out of his eyes, almost instinctively.
“You have nice eyes, Jaehyun,” you say out loud, not sure why. He doesn’t fluster this time but it makes you all the more aware of your nearness.
Your eyes glance at the bottom of the staircase to see a little girl, around nine, hiding from behind the wall that separates the dining room and the kitchen. You return your gaze to Jaehyun with a smirk.
"We should kiss right now. Your little cousin's watching."
Jaehyun looks mildly disgusted. "Why would I want to kiss you in front of my cousin?"
You roll your eyes. “You don't get it, do you? The fastest way to convince a family is through rumours.”
Jaehyun raises an eyebrow. "So?"
"Oh my god, you're an idiot. Nosy cousins are the most effective way to spread rumours."
"Ah." Jaehyun looks enlightened enough for you to continue.
"Okay, but first you need to have these mints." You take out the emergency mints from your purse.
"What? I don't need mints. I have nice smelling breath.”
"Everyone needs mints, Jaehyun. Especially men."
Jaehyun sighs heavily. You take the opportunity to grab his wrist and pull him into a corner.
"Have this mint or else."
You hold his face between your thumb and forefingers, cheeks squishing under the pressure as you force a mint in. He lets you do it for some reason, looking lost as he gazes at you.
You raise an eyebrow. "Oh my, you're enjoying this. Pervert."
"Wha—what? You have to stop thinking you're hot shit, oh my god. I just got distracted for a bit."
"By me, right?"
"No! I just zoned ou—you're enjoying this."
You bite down your smile but a giggle escapes you anyway. Jaehyun rolls his eyes though he smiles, looking far too close to irresistible when his dimples show.
"You can't keep teasing me," he says, voice low.
"I've been doing it for two years. I'm pretty sure I can do it for at least two more."
Jaehyun scoffs, laughing at your statement. "You know what? I'm going to get back at you from now on. I've been so lenient."
You snort before pressing the back of your fingers to your nose. "You? You're going to get back at me? You’re good at lip service, Jaehyun."
“Huh. You might be right about that.”
There's a beat of silence and you look at him expectantly. In the next beat of your heart (or lack thereof), he cups your cheeks and presses his lips to yours, surprising the life out of you as your back hits the wall. It's not just a touch either, his mouth moves over yours and when your knees feel weak, you reluctantly admit that the rumour about Jung Yoonoh being a good kisser is true. Maybe his body count isn't a lower-end single digit after all.
He pulls apart with a short smile tugging at his lips. "Satisfied?"
You sputter out a response before clearing your throat. “I- I don’t think anyone really saw us in this corner.”
Jaehyun makes a low humming sound. “Or you could just say you want me to kiss you again? I know I’m a good kisser.”
“Fuck off.” You punch his chest, eliciting a quiet grunt from him.
You move away from him, peeking from behind the wall. Oh, she saw it alright. The giggling gives it away and the fact that a few more younger cousins have gathered. This is ridiculous. The fact that you wouldn’t mind more is even worse.
You turn back to Jaehyun with steel-set eyes. “No more kissing. Ever. Never again. Kissing is officially banned.”
Jaehyun looks perplexed. “I thought that was a good kiss. Did you not enjoy it? What do you mean no kissing?”
“And I take it back.” The heat on your face is still burning steadily.
“Oh, I see. You liked it so much that you’re embarrassed.”
“You’re such a pain in the ass.”
“So I’m right?”
You roll your eyes and quickly walk down the stairs, a few words of complaint left hanging in the air as Jaehyun follows behind, stumbling over the steps.
Jaehyun likes how comfortable this is. He doesn’t mind glaring daggers at each other but this is fun too. It’s like he doesn’t have to be careful about the lines he might be crossing—there aren’t any damn lines at all. He can’t call it love, at least not by definition, but something is there. Something that is solid enough and heavy enough. Something he would be ready to hold on to.
You laugh at a joke Jaehyun’s dad makes. A family is the only place to feel at home. It might not be yours but maybe at the end of the night, you can convince them to disown Jaehyun and adopt you as their child instead. His cousins seem to be interested in the same things you were as a high schooler and it surprised you. Your job lets you advise the older cousins in a fairly friendly fashion. The little ones seem to like your dress and you find them far too adorable with their pink cheeks and dimples, much like Jaehyun’s. Speaking of which, he definitely got them from his dad. You look around and wonder how Jaehyun has so many female cousins and not an inkling about how women work.
It doesn’t hurt anymore that Dongmin discarded you so recklessly.
He’s wrong. Jaehyun’s wrong. It doesn’t hurt—didn’t hurt right now at the very least. When Jaehyun kissed you, you didn’t think of Dongmin or his girlfriend or anyone else. You thought that Jaehyun’s skin is somehow always the right temperature.
You shake your head. Jaehyun drives your getaway car and you shouldn’t get too comfortable in its worn-out leather seats. This shouldn’t be any different to you; you aren’t supposed to find love in every corner. This was all a survival instinct.
The more stories Jaehyun’s mother shares with you over dinner, the more you find it comfortable to be here. You don’t feel this welcome in your own apartment (although, there isn’t exactly anyone else living there but you and the goddamn pigeon that wakes you up at six in the morning). The more the night progresses, the more you want to believe in this lie. Jaehyun glances at you from time to time, his gaze neither uncomfortable nor harsh and you smile at him when he does. Right now, there is no loneliness and the air is warm and smells of freshly cooked food; the way familial love works is such a mystery. You feel content.
Tumblr media
“Why are we doing this again?” you lean in and ask Jaehyun, eyes focused on the TV as he tries to fix it.
“Because I need to get out of work, and fulfilled soulmates get a day off on Valentine’s day.”
You nod. “Your apartment kind of stinks. I feel sorry for Sicheng.”
“This is clean,” he defends, pointing at the lack of any visible mess in his room. His work table, however, has too many items scattered over it to be called neat. There’s a fairly large TV attached to the wall and you’re a little jealous about it. You only ever watch shows on your (quite beloved albeit small) laptop. The blinds aren’t fully closed, the evening city lights trying their best to pry their pervasive fingers in and add something more to the peach hue of Jaehyun’s room.
The doorbell rings just in estimated time for food delivery, a sigh leaving your mouth along with a ‘finally’. His place is strangely comfortable and much less of the war zone that you expected. There’s no reason to feel awkward, really, or even the bubbling in your stomach. You’re not seventeen, in your crush’s house. Jaehyun isn’t even someone you like that way.
It’s just two friends hanging out and watching a movie and doing other friendly activities. Two friends hanging out on Valentine's day. Two friends who have kissed more than once.
What do lovers do anyway?
This thing with Jaehyun has turned into clandestine smiles at the office building, subtle texts of ‘did you eat?’ and ‘good morning, idiot’, racing hearts at brushing hands on the occasional off-work hangouts (you refuse to call them “dates”) and overall, a lot more pink hearts floating over his head when you see him. It’s positively appalling.
You don’t mind it one bit.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” The delivery man wishes as he leaves and you feel a sudden rage bubble up in you.
“Ah, does he think every couple celebrates Valentine’s day? And just because we’re in the same apartment means we’re a couple? Wow.” You cross your arms, scoffing. “Who’s he to wish me?”
“Why… Why are you getting mad?” Jaehyun asks quietly, slightly confused.
You glare at him, your anger not quite dissipated and walk back into his room, placing the box of confectionaries on the bedside table with a loud thud. Jaehyun follows, placing the drinks rather clumsily beside it. He gives you one last look of concern before settling down on his bed.
You let out another huff of complaint.
"Does everything have to be heart-shaped?"
You stare at the nauseating display of baked goods delivered in a pretty heart-shaped box. The brownie is in a clear plastic box that has a tiny bouquet of hearts atop it, the coffee cups have heart stickers around the rim, and the pastry itself is heart-shaped or rather, two halves of a heart. One of them is strawberry pink and the other chocolate brown.
“You seem… suddenly fired up,” Jaehyun comments quietly.
You don’t really care if you look crazy to him right now; he’s already seen the worse parts of you. You’re just so annoyed at all this red and pink that was delivered. Aren’t cafes supposed to stick with that beige-cream palette?
While you contemplate, Jaehyun tears the little sugar packet and attempts to open the lid of the cup at the same time, your blood pressure rising at the sight because you were half sure he’d spill the drink. After much difficulty, he shakes the packet trying to get just enough sugar but of course, like the clumsy oaf he is, he misses almost entirely, spilling sugar over his coffee table. It’s oddly endearing but that’s a thought you’ll keep to yourself.
He turns to you with a sheepish grin and you give him a look of distaste.
“You are a sorry excuse of a person, Jaehyun.”
“Look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn’t mess this up.”
You turn to look him in the eyes, the honey shade alluring under warm apartment lights. They really are pretty.
“I, and every other sane human being, would not mess up adding sugar to a cup of coffee.”
“You faltered for a moment there.”
That was not the reason you faltered. You roll your eyes and look away, taking a sip of your drink and sighing at the taste.
“How do you even like Americanos? Don’t you like a bit of cream and sweetness?”
 “I don’t really care for bitterness,” he answers.
“Wow, you must be a masochist.”
“And it’s quite obvious you’re a sadist.”
You snicker. “That makes us quite the pair.”
“I would like that sentence in a non-BDSM context, thank you.”
Jaehyun turns on the TV and the Netflix logo animation pops up. You raise an eyebrow at his ‘Continue Watching’ list, eyeing Bridegerton and Sweet Home, and wondering if he could be any more of an enigma. You can’t possibly figure him out at this point. You groan when he picks a title.
“Ugh. Do we have to watch a romantic comedy?”
“What? They’re funny. And I thought you liked those 2000’s movies.”
You believed in unicorns and sock goblins and love back then too. These days, you hate to see other people in love, especially when it’s fake. The movies you loved are now the movies you hate. The couples you eyed with delight at parks and cafes are now the bane of your existence. In fact, you’d go as far as to say that you enjoy the digital fireworks from a couple having a massive online breakup. Things falling apart are entertaining when it’s not happening to you.
You purse your lips. Can't you see other people happy without wanting to tear it down for yourself?
“Fine. But I’ll pick the 2000’s romcom.”
Jaehyun shrugs and hands over the remote. You see Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds on the poster and click on it immediately. The Proposal has a good enough comedy to romance ratio, in your opinion.
“I’m kind of surprised you came,” he says quietly.
“Why?” You raise an eyebrow. “Is it because of the suggestive nature of visiting someone’s apartment on Valentine’s day? Did you think we’d be doing something… more fun?”
You lean in and bat your eyelashes suggestively, although you’re clearly joking.
“I think you should know better than to get mouthy with me,” he answers as he leans in further, making your heartbeat hike at the proximity. Maybe he’s figured you out. Wouldn’t it be so nice to figure each other out at the same time—like puzzle pieces fitting together?
You move away from him. “Well, it’s not like I can go anywhere else. And I didn’t want to stay in my own apartment.”
“Maybe you enjoy my company?”
“Look, I would be sipping my coffee at a perfectly aesthetic cafe if it weren’t Valentine’s day.”
He raises an eyebrow at your nonsensical declaration and you sigh, trying to explain yourself.
“Cafes just terrorize the single folk on Valentine’s day. You should always go with Netflix,” you say.
“And chill?”
“Do you even know what that means?”
“As I’ve told you so many times, I am not stupid.”
You inhale, an idea presenting itself.
“Hey, since we’re technically a couple, shouldn’t you be sharing your Netflix password with me?” you ask, pressing your lips into your cutest smile.
“No.”
“You’re so stingy,” you mutter. It was worth a shot.
Jaehyun laughs, your hand reaching out to poke his dimples but you stop yourself. You weren’t supposed to get this comfortable. This wasn’t your place to be. Lost in thought, the moving screen leaves you unfazed and you can’t look at him anymore. However, Jaehyun reaches out right then and wipes at the space beside your lips, your focus lifting from the beginning scenes of The Proposal and latching onto Jaehyun’s lips.
There’s a pause, your head clearing itself of thoughts when you make eye contact with him. Soft hair, doe eyes, full lips and dimples—he’s so damn attractive, it hurts your existence. Does he have to be this close to you? You have mixed feelings about that look in his eyes.
“Can I kiss you?” he whispers suddenly.
“Yes,” you answer.
If you look from a rational point of view, you should not have said that. You should have said anything but that. But you don’t want to think right now. Jaehyun’s touch is warm over your skin as his hand rests under your jaw and the other on your waist.
You should not have said that. But you feel loved.
Somewhere along, you find yourself parting only to kiss again, the feeling of skin so delightful in a way you’ve never experienced. Your shirt hikes up and you see Jaehyun eye the little heart with the arrow—the sign you so despised with a gentle smile.
“It’s pretty,” he whispers.
It’s pretty but it isn’t his. He doesn’t have to look at you like that—he’s come a long way from nervous glances and now he’s the one making you nervous. Just say it isn’t love and it will be alright.
You part, sobering up for a moment and you disentangle your limbs to sit at the side of his bed.
“What’s- What’s wrong?” Jaehyun whispers.
You exhale.
“All my life, I wait and when it comes, it’s all wrong,” you say, staring at your lap. Self-pity is the most disgusting kind of pity to feel. You’re past crying at things like this. You’re past crying for an ounce of romance, every time you listen to a love song on the radio or look at an Instagram post of a couple or pass by lovers on the sidewalk content with each other. You don’t even have cats to return home to. Modern loneliness is wearing you down but you can’t believe in fairytales anymore.
He scoffs, smiling bitterly. “I don’t even know if this is worth losing my dignity over.”
“Jaehyun—”
“We can’t pretend anymore—I can’t pretend anymore,” Jaehyun exhales. “I want you enough to forget the system. Give me an answer. Please.”
You don’t mind forgetting the system right now. Jaehyun’s lips are always the right temperature; the warmth of his body seeps through his shirt as you press yourself to him in a hug. He’s perfect and right now, you want to believe he’s perfect for you—even if he isn’t, you want to believe it into existence.
You cup Jaehyun’s cheeks, unsaid emotion in his doe eyes, and kiss him. This time, you mean it with every ounce of your being. There’s no more flustering each other, just the hot flush of intimacy when you feel skin that doesn’t burn you. It’s just the right feeling. There’s no way this can be wrong.
Aren’t you getting ahead of yourself? You wish the voice would pipe down. It’s a coward, fearing fate just as everyone else does. But you are better than that, and this feeling is too enjoyable to let go. You don’t want this to fade.
Just then, Dongmin’s face comes to mind and you think that maybe if you kiss someone else with all you have, you don’t have to think of your shortcomings ever again.
Jaehyun pulls apart and you miss the warmth.
“You’re not… You’re not thinking of me, are you?” he asks.
You don’t answer, even if the silence is overwhelming.
“I’d rather not have you close your eyes and think of someone else when I’m in front of you.”
“I’m sorry” is all you can say.
“You can at least pretend to love me.” His voice is a hoarse whisper. “Could. It’s not like this was ever supposed to work out.”
You gulp, looking away. “Jaehyun, come on. That’s not like you. We were- we were just… having fun.”
He takes a deep breath. “It hurts to not be wanted by someone you want. You know that. So why are you doing this to me?”
Because misery likes company.
“I’m sorry.”
It seems the phrase you barely uttered when you were younger is tumbling out of your lips in a mixture of grief and pity. Perhaps it’s karma. Perhaps it’s fate. Perhaps it’s just the consequences of your mistakes.
Jaehyun parts his lips, a sigh departing. He leans in again, pushing away all of his thoughts. A little more hurt won't kill him tonight. How and when did you bring him down to his knees?
However, he's stopped by your hands against his shoulders, his lips hovering over yours.
"Let's stop," you say. "You're right."
"Isn't this what you wanted?"
“I don’t- I don’t know. I don’t know anymore.”
You wish you could be brave enough to burn the instruction pamphlet from destiny. But right now, you need to get away from Jaehyun, away from any more misery business.
“I’ll get going,” you say, gathering your stuff.
Jaehyun hesitates but doesn’t stop you. He would never stop you, can’t stop so how could he even dream of stopping fate? This can never work out. It felt right in the moment but you don’t know anything more than that. You can’t close your eyes and pray everything disappears. No one else will solve your problems for you, you know that.
It’s time you start fixing the mess you made. You leave with a polite goodbye and hear a loud sigh behind you once the door is closed. Blinking away the urge to walk back in, you take long and quick strides to the elevator. You’re going to fix this.
Tumblr media
Maybe if Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ wasn’t blasting at full volume at this stupid office party, you could be thinking a little straighter.
He was right. You can’t pretend anymore. There were thousands of ways this could have gone better. You didn’t have to pretend to be soulmates when you’re not. You could’ve discarded your belief in the whole system like Dongmin and Mijoo and dated someone out of spite. You didn’t have to drag Jaehyun into your sorry mess. You need to take out the nail you hammered into your own foot.
It’s the first time you’ve visited the rooftop restaurant from the company’s subsidiary chain of high-end restaurants but you imagined it would be bigger. It’s the news’ fault for making this place seem like a football field. However, you might be feeling that way because the distance between you and Jaehyun is suffocatingly small as is the distance with Dongmin. You don’t need to see Jaehyun tonight.
You don’t intend to make your confession a public affair and you certainly don’t believe in tack things like atonement. However, improvement begins with a step in the right direction. Maybe you’ll be a better person after this. Maybe you’ll still be as annoying and pushy as ever. You need to get it off your chest so you can proceed with the already tedious journey that comes with a soulmate rejection. You wonder why there’s so many man-made laws about soulmates when fate has made it complicated enough as it is. Love is the same as legalese when it comes to this system.
You flit about the crowds, smiling and greeting people and swerving away from Jaehyun every time he tries to approach you. You’re trying to make a good decision for once. He better not intrude. You’re wearing pink too, for the first time in a while: a satin shirt, pants and blazer set in dull pink.
“Dongmin,” you say, pulling him by the sleeve of his blue tux, and away from the rest of the HR team. “I have to show you something.”
“Hm? Show me?” He blinks at you.
You get him to follow you to the inside the premises, stopping when you’re far into a
“Uh?” Dongmin looks around before leaning in to whisper. “You’re not plotting to murder me, are you?”
You blink, and he laughs at you incredulously. “Why are you so serious?”
“I was lying,” you rush. “With Jaehyun. He’s not my soulmate. You are.”
Dongmin blinks in confusion. “Are… you joking? That was a weird joke but it could pass as funny—”
“Dongmin.”
You pull out your shirt from your pants, exposing the tattoo on your hip. It’s the little arrowed heart that has been plaguing you for years but now when you look at it, you feel no animosity. After all, it’s been through the same things you have.
Dongmin’s face falls into stunned silence, eyes fixated on your waist.
“That’s- That’s my—what is this?”
Russian roulette is certainly not the same without a gun.
“I lied, Dongmin,” you answer, fixing your shirt back in. “I was so afraid of your rejection that I made an even larger fool of myself.”
His initial shock seems to have partly subsided.
“You… Why didn’t you tell me?” He looks momentarily hurt.
“You have Mijoo, Dongmin. I can’t ruin something like that.”
A love that doesn’t need fate to fix it.
Dongmin glances away in guilt and sighs, though the sound is croaky. This must be more than what he can take.
“I’m sorry,” he says, haltingly. “I hurt you, didn’t I? When I thought I was being brave, I hurt you instead.”
You smile bitterly. “We all hurt someone, Dongmin. I still have to fix that one for myself.”
He scans your face, lips trembling slightly as unspoken words die on them.
“We’ll tend to the legal stuff later, hm? No compensation. We can file a mutual rejection.”
“But—”
“Shh. I’m happy enough as coworkers and I get paid more than enough for this job. Might get a promotion soon too.”
You wink at him with an added finger gun, trying to play it cool. Despite everything, a weight feels lifted from your shoulders. Now that you are truly alone, you might as well embrace this growing loneliness crawling under your skin. Discomfort could be something you can get used to.
When you get back to the warmly lit rooftop, the HR team looks at you curiously. You have the most self-destructive thought you’ve had in a while and tell yourself, you might as well if you've come this far. This is it. This is your social death. Honesty is the best policy, unfortunately.
“Dongmin and I have the same soulmate mark,” you announce. “We’re soulmates but we’ll sign a mutual rejection.”
Doyoung looks almost like he’ll faint and Soojin’s mouth is so wide open, you could practice throwing some mini basketballs in. This is your team—almost a second family, and it’s time you stop trying to hide yourself or disguise your feelings as something they’re not. They’ll get over it, as will you.
“J-Jaehyun?” Soojin looks to your side and you turn to find Jaehyun frowning.
“You could’ve discussed this with me,” he says, an odd sound of relief in his laugh.
It hurts to look at him but you muster up your strength.
“I’m sorry,” you say, facing him. “I didn’t want to drag you into this hell with me.”
Into this loveless hell made for you.
“(name).”
It’s so painfully quiet in this corner; there are so many eyes on you and only the hurt taking shape in Jaehyun’s eyes knock some sense into you.
“I’ll leave first,” you say, bowing as you take your leave.
You brisk up your pace and exit the venue as quickly as you can and into the building corridor.
Unfortunately for you, you recognize the pair of footsteps that follow you—both of them having their timings wrong. Boys don’t chase after the girl when she’s walking away. Boys should leave a girl alone when she feels like she’s about to cry.
You turn to face two men and groan internally. This is the worst possible situation—you’d rather crawl into a hole than look at either of them. The corporate light shines harshly on either of their faces but the look on them is so earnest, you want to close your eyes and scream. You don’t mind being alone. You were overstepping when you wished you weren’t.
“(name),” Dongmin starts. “I’m sorry it turned out this way. If you’d told me, we could have talked this out.”
A light scoff leaves Jaehyun and Dongmin purses his lips. It’s kind of funny watching both of their tall frames in hesitant postures and you cross your arms. You’re going to deal with this quickly like you always should have. If you’re dealing with fate, you need to have a clear head—and fortune doesn’t favour fools. Being with Jaehyun was nice but he is not yours. Dongmin may have been assigned to you but you’d rather not ruin someone’s relationship.
“What would we have talked about?” you ask. “Compensation charges? Apologies?”
You see a hint of positivity on Jaehyun’s face and turn to face him, frowning.
“And you. Don’t look so smug. You’re the reason I realized this crap. It hurts. Like hell.”
He opens his mouth but no words come when he’s far too taken aback. He can’t offer consolation now, not after everything. You knew this would happen. You would undoubtedly end up wishing you didn’t fall in love with him on the day you leave.
“(name). Listen to me,” Dongmin calls again, voice gentle.
Jaehyun sighs. “We’re both fucking this up, dude.”
Dongmin takes a sharp breath.
“You know, soulmates can be platonic,” he reasons, looking only at you. “People are made for each other differently and maybe you and I—”
“You’re just making her feel worse,” Jaehyun cuts him off.
“How do you know that?” Dongmin asks, finally turning to him. “Because you’ve spent a month or two with her? I’m her soulmate.”
“I think a month or two is much better than a stranger with the same damn birthmark.”
“Oh come on,” Dongmin scoffs. “The system exists for a reason.”
“I don’t give a shit about the system. The same as your girlfriend—oh, sorry, did you forget about her already?”
“It’s not like that.” Dongmin quietens. “We’ll figure something out.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose. They’re worse than you are—honestly, you don’t know what you expected from the timid emotional maturity of men. Both of their polite facades have melted and you’re starting to miss their sweet-tempered work demeanour.
“Come with me,” Dongmin tells you.
He wraps his hand around your wrist and tugs, Jaehyun visibly tensing up at the gesture. He presses his tongue against his cheek in annoyance but refrains from doing anything rash. You feel sorry when you look at him.
“Dongmin,” you whisper. “Can we- can we have a moment?”
Dongmin nods in understanding and exits the hallway to cool off with a few splashes of water in the washroom.
“Would you go with him?” Jaehyun asks, jaw clenched. “An acquaintance as most? Are you willing to run into the arms of fate that you hated so much?”
He looks bitter and you can’t think of a sugar-coated response. You’ll just have to tell him how you feel.
“I need to sort things out, Jaehyun. This—”
You point from him to yourself.
“Couldn’t work out thanks to fate. Dongmin and I will never work out because he’s braver than I am. You know he’s doing all of that just so I don’t get hurt, right? He’s not suddenly in love with me.”
Jaehyun purses his lips, looking down to his feet. Is it so bad that he let jealousy get the best of his mouth? Envy isn’t so awful. He looks from your eyes to lips and wishes he were young enough to believe in fairytales.
“You don’t have to be brave,” he whispers. “You don’t have to be so brave to fall in love. You don’t have to be brave to stay with me.”
“We tried, Jaehyun. And we can’t cheat fate. That, at the very least, requires bravery.”
You press your lips into a thin line. It hurts. It hurts so bad to look at him and face the consequences of this flawed design. It’s unfair. It’s unfair that you have to follow the rules even after trying your best to break them.
“You wish you never met me, don’t you?” you whisper. “I made a mess.”
Before he responds, you bow in a short goodbye and walk towards the elevator. There’s no footsteps behind you, no Prince Charming. It’s just you and your high heels clacking against the cold marble as you head back to an empty home. You always thought freedom would feel different, that distance would give you perspective. It just feels awful when no one is around you at all. When you have no one to pick up morning calls from, receive texts from asking if you ate, spend time in peace without uttering a single word—are you free or are you lonely?
The rules state that the two of you are different. It is true. You are as different as love in real life and love in the movies; and neither of them have happy endings now.
Tumblr media
You wish you drank some more last night if you were going to embarrass yourself like that. Thankfully, it’s the weekend and you have two more days to figure out how to face your coworkers. You frown when you think of Jaehyun. Were you wrong to tell him that you simply couldn’t choose him? What if fate is right and it falls apart? You stir your morning coffee, the will to drink it fading slowly. It’s already fallen apart—and it wasn’t fate who did that, it was you. Should you have taken his stupidly warm hands and asked him to follow you? You don’t understand how it works at all.
Centuries of questioning what love is, poking and prodding at it like a lab sample, and there’s still no perfect answer. Love is blind. Love is cruel. Love is a fever. Love is temporary insanity. Love is acceptance. Love will set you free. There’s just too many variations. You can never tell if fate is meant to make it easier or worse.
No one questions you at the office and you're not sure if you’re glad or aggravated. Only Doyoung shoots you a pitiful look which you brush off and immediately get into work. Embarrassment is only real if you acknowledge it. However, every time Dongmin tries to talk to you, you ask for space and even alone in your thoughts, you don’t get it. They just have to drift to Jaehyun.
You wonder if what he said was true, that he wanted you enough to forget the system. It’s clearly ruined now. The spiral of thinking has you zoning out during work more often than not and even Doyoung ends up reprimanding you for your lack of focus. Sometimes you want to snap but other times, you’re just hopelessly reciting the events over and over in your head. This was supposed to happen, wasn’t it? You don’t even have the strength left in you to blame it all on Jaehyun.
You pace in the corridors after work, contemplating popping by the Marketing Department. What could go wrong? Sure, it was a little dramatic of you to leave like that but everything can be fixed, right? You groan. What you were supposed to be fixing, you made worse. Are your hands cursed or something? You shake your head, returning to your desk to gather your belongings and head home.
Unfortunately, the sight of Doyoung sitting in your chair alarms you and you stop a foot away.
“If you’re going to reprimand me for watching cat videos instead of checking the employee records, I can assure you my efficiency is still top-notch.”
“You’re—what? Never mind.” Doyoung shakes his head. “Can you give this ginseng pack to Jaehyun? I owe him.”
Oh no. You know where this is going.
“You know I’m going to keep that for myself, right?” You make a face. “I’d rather die than face Jaehyun right now.”
Doyoung shrugs. “Who knows? Maybe he’ll be the one running to you. This is in case of an emergency.”
You give him a fake smile and Doyoung shakes his head. “Good to see you’re still great at pretending to be fine.”
You sigh. “Thanks for looking out for me, bossman.”
Doyoung blinks, hand covering his mouth when an audible gasp leaves him. “Woah. I think that’s the first time I’ve heard you thank me. But don’t call me bossman ever again.”
“Noted,” you say, taking your bag and leaving with a short goodbye. You’re lucky he lets you off work early, even if you never took it. Employees usually can’t leave until their superiors does and if you were a senior employee, you’d be giving your juniors quite the hell.
You seem to be good at concocting hellscapes. Perhaps, you should look for job openings in the underworld. One last thought of Jaehyun exits your head and you take the bus home, admiring the city you live in and the warmth of people and their relationships. You don’t feel jealous; you just bask in them for the time—be it a mother and her son or two bickering sisters or a lovely old couple. That’s how it’s meant to be, then. That’s how love works.
Tumblr media
Jaehyun smacks his head against the sofa armrest for the fifteenth time in a row.
“Dude. You’re going to permanently ruin the fabric.” Sicheng says, eyes trained on his laptop screen.
“I should’ve said something more.” Jaehyun’s voice is so zombie-like, he thinks he should cast himself in the Train to Busan sequel as an extra.
“I’m glad I’m not you,” Sicheng mutters.
“Can you give me some sort of consolation, at least?”
“That’s not what I’m your friend for.”
Jaehyun sighs and resumes smacking the back of his head against the armrest. He really needs to figure this out. After all, he can’t really Google the solution to this.
“One thing doesn’t make sense,” Sicheng says, finally looking up from his screen. “Why do you have the same mark as (name)’s if you’re not soulmates?”
“You’re so incredibly—but adorably—stupid, Sicheng. She drew it in with a permanent marker. She kissed me too! It was sudden and weird but I didn’t mind it.
“Yikes.” Sicheng makes a face. “So… you didn’t take a shower for how long now?”
Jaehyun furrows his eyebrows. “What?”
“The ink hasn’t washed off. I heard you singing in the shower yesterday, how could you not have washed that off? Ugh. Don’t tell me you miss her.”
Jaehyun’s eyes widen as he jumps up and rushes to the washroom. Looking into the mirror, the tattoo poking out from his T-shirt resembles yours a lot more than his. The arrow is still drawn in. Jaehyun’s shoulder slumps. He doesn’t know what he was expecting. Turning the tap and letting the water flow, he wets his hand and rubs at his collarbone to remove the arrow.
Except it doesn’t budge. His skin turns painfully red from the rubbing but the ink, which usually washes off in less than five minutes has no intention of leaving. Did you use a different brand of marker the last time? When was it anyway?
Jaehyun breathes out, firming his resolve. He needs to be with you.
Sicheng blinks in surprise as Jaehyun grabs his car keys, not even bothering to change from an all-black getup of a T-shirt and jeans like some emo teenager, and shuts the front door behind him. Not even a ‘goodbye, I’m leaving!’
Sicheng sighs. Love makes people crazy. He’s not falling into that trap when his soulmate literally doesn’t exist, the same as his soulmark. It seems the contestants in this game are full of exceptions.
Tumblr media
You hit your head against your pillow. To visit Jaehyun or not to. You haven’t left your bed since you woke up around seven in the morning, and now it’s ten. Your bedsheets are a mess because you’ve rolled around too much on them (in despair, not with someone unfortunately).
You need the quiet sometimes to let your mind rest, to let your heart rest. You needed time. But maybe it’s been long enough and now you’re just searching for excuses to hold on to your last shred of dignity.
You lift your head up and glare at the box of ginseng on your table. Should you? You reluctantly get up, feeling a sting of pain in your back for lying in that awkward position for so long. Right when you’ve put on your slippers, the doorbell rings and you groan. How did the package you stress-ordered last night arrive so early? These deliveries are getting faster and faster.
You walk to the front door and open it thoughtlessly, freezing up at the sight. Your first reaction is to cover yourself. You’re not exactly your best-looking version at the moment. Jaehyun’s dark circles almost match yours but he’s better dressed than you are—in a black T-shirt and jeans while you’re wearing a Gudetama pajama set.
“We’re not just friends,” he blurts. “We’re not soulmates but we’re not just friends.”
“Huh? Oh my god, this is the most embarrassing I’ve looked.”
Jaehyun furrows his eyebrows in a question look.
“That’s not important! Look—”
He pushes you inside, closing the door behind him. His hair is so disheveled and messy, he barely even looks like the same well-maintained marketing employee you know.
Jaehyun tugs at his T-shirt, pulling down to reveal his tattoo—albeit with your marker-drawn arrow through it. He does have a pretty well-built chest, you note before chiding yourself for getting distracted.
You raise an eyebrow. “Do you, uh, need help scrubbing it off or something?”
“No.” Jaehyun lets out a huff of exasperation. “It won’t wash off. If it’s what I think it is—”
“Miracles don’t happen to people like us, Jaehyun,” you say quietly.
He gulps. “I don’t know about miracles but… I just needed an excuse to see you, I guess.”
You look up, a rose blush over Jaehyun’s bare face, and run your finger over the tattoo, sighing at the warmth of his skin. Your hand travels up to his cheek, resting atop it while you muster enough courage to look Jaehyun in his chocolate brown eyes.
You pull away. This isn’t the time. You still have an internal crisis to sort out. Are you even deserving of love? It makes much more sense if the answer is no.
However, Jaehyun pulls you in by the waist, his right palm warm against your cheek.
“I don’t care what anyone says.” He runs his thumb over your cheek in a painfully fond manner. “You’re worth more than the price I pay for this.”
He leans in and presses his lips to yours swiftly, your head clearing of thoughts almost immediately. It feels so right, you can feel the spark, the red thread around your skin, hear the bells. This kiss was far more perfect than it was supposed to be.
You part, gasping. Jaehyun blinks at you, breathing heavily.
“Kiss me again.”
Jaehyun does as told and you might just believe in miracles this way. With his hand around your waist and in your hair, his lips over yours and the low rumbling laughter that parts the two of you—you might just believe in miracles. You might just believe that love isn't something you deserve by earning.
“I like this,” Jaehyun comments. “I like the way this is.”
You press your finger to his lips. “I think you should shut up and kiss me some more.”
Jaehyun rolls his eyes. “I know you’re sexually repressed as of now, but that’s no reason to take advantage of me.”
You scowl, punching him on the shoulder and moving away from him.
“Come back,” he complains in a quiet voice.
“I am not going to do that.” You cross your arms.
“Come on,” he mutters, inching closer as you inch away, till your back hits the couch and you tumble backwards onto it, your legs on the headrest. Jaehyun laughs at your position, leaning in to keep his hands on either side of you, a doting look over him.
“Hey, did you know if I kicked my leg up, it would hit you in the balls?”
“Please don’t do that.”
You giggle, Jaehyun’s nose rubbing against yours in a bunny kiss.
“Is your place usually this much of a mess?” Jaehyun raises an eyebrow.
You sigh heavily. “I was having a bad day, okay? Or… a bad weekend.”
“Do you even have food?”
You look away, crossing your arms. Jaehyun sighs and shakes his head.
“We should go grocery shopping. How do you live like this?”
You scoff. “Oh, spare me the lecture. I’ve heard enough horror stories about your room from Sicheng. You can’t hide from me by sweeping your clothes and belongings into his room.”
“Snitch,” he mutters under his breath.
You can’t help the giggle that erupts from your mouth and you immediately cover it. Jaehyun smiles at you fondly and you look away, unable to bear that gaze of his.
“It really won’t wash off, by the way,” Jaehyun states, scratching at his collarbone.
You narrow your eyes, smacking his arms away to roll off the couch. Taking his wrist, you walk into your bathroom and turn the tap on. Something’s strange. But also strangely right.
“Look, I already tried—ow! Don’t rub that hard!”
You blink in confusion, trying again despite Jaehyun looking like his soul already left him. It doesn’t work. Your marker isn’t even that permanent. At least his regenerating skin cells should get rid of that arrow. Unless the ink was deep enough to pierce all the layers, as in a soulmark.
You gasp.
“You were right!”
“I told you s—”
"That's the point, isn't it?" you say, realization dawning as your eyes widen. "To see if people will question the system at all."
Jaehyun shrugs. “Maybe.”
"Oh, all those unhappy marriages that could have been saved," you say as you exhale.
Jaehyun chuckles lightly. "I think that the point was, people can be happy without their soulmates. It's whoever you make one out of. Or I Googled too many articles on anti-soulmate propaganda."
You smile, leaning in to press a kiss against his cheek. Watching his ears turn bright red is the cherry on top.
“Okay, fake-boyfriend-turned-real-soulmate.” You give him a cheeky smile. “Did you rethink your decision about sharing that Netflix password with me? I get the girlfriend free pass, right? Right?”
“I didn’t even share it with my mother.”
You whack his arm, him possibly used to it by now, judging from his lack of response.
“Idiot.” You cross your arms. “We can Netflix… and chill then. God, I can’t believe I said that.”
Jaehyun breaks into a chuckle. “You’re so pushy.”
 “And you like being pushed around, nerd.”
“Who said that?”
Jaehyun wraps his arms around you, spinning you so that your back hits the door. He leans in to kiss you again and you smack your palm over his pouted lips. You laugh at his face, his eyes brimming with confusion.
“You’re in my apartment. I make the rules here. Think twice before you start a game with me, Mister.”
His shoulders droop. “Fine. Can you at least let me kiss you four times a day?”
“Five times, if you ask.”
He laughs before leaning in again. “Can I kiss you now?”
“Wasn’t it obvious?”
“You are one hell of a woman. Emphasis on hell.”
You laugh and grab his collar, pulling him in for the kiss that seals this deal.
You realize a few things in the moment: a) You don’t have to play roulette to find love, b) You don’t have to pick your poison to find love, and most importantly c) Love is right where you make something of it. Fate is still not in your good books but if it bends to you this way, you don’t mind at all. If Jaehyun kisses you like this every day, you don’t mind one bit.
Starstruck- Louis Partridge x Reader
Tumblr media
Hey! I had a request. that's actually an idea that you can use if you like it :) ok so it can be a louispxreader and the reader is a singer. they meet in a Ceremony and they become friends and maybe after a while they fall for each other and confess? you can change it however you want it. thanks <3
Requested: Yes
Word Count: 2943
Warning: Just lots of fluff
Taglist: @girlincrimson
A/n: Sorry for not getting to you sooner. I am going to try to get out imagines and request as best I can this week. I am booked with work all week this week. Also requests are open.
I changed a little bit of it, but most of it is still the same as you requested.
P.s The songs that I will be using are not mine, they belong with the talented writers and their respectful owners.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your POV
I was in my dressing room waiting to be called to go on stage when I got a notification from instagram. I saw that the actor Louis Partridge followed me. I decided to do some stalking and found some really interesting photos and pictures of him. While I was looking at this one photo of him getting his makeup done I accidentally liked the photo. I then immediately started panicking, because I didn't mean to like it. Before I could do anything about it, I was called to go on stage.
I grabbed my guitar and slowly made my way up to the front of the stage. I could feel the excited energy rising off the fans that came to the show tonight. I felt a smirk form on my face when the lights came on. I heard all the fans start screaming, which made me let out a little giggle into the microphone.
“ How is everyone doing tonight!” I shouted into the mic
I laughed at how everyone was screaming again. I decided to start off with my most popular song right now. I started playing the chords to my song ‘ Good 4 you’
“ Ah. Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily. You found a new girl and it only took a couple weeks. Remember when you said that you wanted to give me the world? (Ah-ah-ah-ah)”
I then made the crowd sing along with me.
“ Well, good for you. You look happy and healthy. Not me. If you ever cared to ask.”
I let the crowd scream the lyrics while I continued to play the guitar. I then grabbed the microphone and screamed..
“ Well, good for you, I guess you’re gettin’ everything you want. (Ah) You brought a new car and your career’s really takin’ off (Ah) It’s like we never even happened.”
While singing, I walked up the front and held the microphone close to them and let them scream the lyrics.
I then jumped in with them.
“ Person who ever got you? Well, screw that and screw you. You will never have to hurt the way you know that I do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Louis POV
I was on the set of Enola Holmes when my phone buzzed indicating that I got a notification. I pulled it out to find the most famous singer I was in love with and liked one of my photos. I was just staring at my screen when my phone got snached out of my hand.
“ Ooh, what’s got you blushing like that? It looks like you turned into a very red tomato.” I heard Millie speak
I watched her face change from teasing to super shocked. I still felt shocked.
“ What! How?” She spits out
I shrugged my shoulders in response. Millie then gave me a playful glare. “ What do you mean you don’t know?”
I gave Millie a look of confusion. “ Millie, I just don’t know how she found my account. I mean I follow her but I don’t think she would ever follow me.”
She just nodded her head and handed my phone back. I then slid it into my pocket before we had to go back to our scene together.
Your POV
I was getting closer to the end of my new song so I went back to my microphone stand and put the mic back in its place before lowering my voice.
“ Maybe I’m too emotional, But your apathy’s like a wound in salt. Maybe I’m too emotional, or maybe you never cared at all. Maybe I’m too emotional, Your apathy is like a wound in salt.” I started leaning into my microphone and started getting my voice ready to shout soon. “ Maybe I’m too emotional, or maybe you never cared at all.” I then let the crowd sing the chorus until I shouted into the mic “ LIKE A DAMN SOCIOPATH!” I heard the crowd scream loud when I did that so I let out a giggle before continuing my song.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was now sitting down on my stool that one of my band mates brought over for me. I was strumming my acoustic guitar on my lap to my next song while talking to my fans.
“ How is everyone doing tonight?”
I got back a bunch of screams and I even heard some responses back which made me smile. “ Alright guys the show is wrapping up soon-” Before I could continue I heard the crowd “ Aww” in response. “ You guys are funny, but I have had such an amazing time hanging out and singing for you guys. I just want to let you know I have about two more songs for you guys. So the first song I want to play for you guys is ‘ Happier’ and then the last and final song of the night is going to be' ‘Good Boy’’.”
I gave the crowd a smile before going back to playing the chords to my song ‘ Happier’
I got closer to the mic and sang the first words…
“ We broke up a month ago.Your friends are mine, you know I know. You’ve moved on, found someone new. One more girl who brings out the better in you. And I thought my heart was detached. From all the sunlight of our past. But she’s so sweet, she’s so pretty, Does she mean you forgot about me?”
I then stop singing for a little while with a small frown on my face before looking up to find the crowd with their phone lights out. I gave a small smile before going back to a frown. I then sang..
“ Oh, I hope you’re happy, But not like how you were with me. I’m selfish, I know, I can’t let you go. So find someone great, but don’t be happier.”
I then pointed for the crowd to take over the singing for a little bit while I played the chords.
Louis POV Millie and I just finished our last scene of the movie so we had to change out of our outfits and head to the place where we were meeting the rest of the cast and crew members for a one last dinner event.
I was the last to arrive as per usual, so we all laughed it off before having a great time with each other before heading off in different directions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once I was back to my house I fell into my bed and layed there for quite some time. I got interrupted with a text message, so I grabbed my phone and said Millie sent me a link to something. Without thinking I clicked on it and saw that it was a video of Y/n singing one of her popular songs. I smiled while watching it due to my huge crush on her, if I ever met her in real life I probably would pass out in front of her.
Your POV
After I sang my last line of my last song I yelled into the mic…
“ I LOVE YOU LONDON! SEE YOU REAL SOON AGAIN!”
I then ran off stage and headed to my dressing room to pack my things to then get on my toru bus that will take me to my hotel that I was staying at. While I was sitting on the bus I decided to post a couple of my pictures I took and put them on my instagram page. After I did that I then decided to stalk that actor I saw on my feed.
‘Time Jump’
It was one of the most important days of my life because I was nominated for an award at the Grammys. So I was with my make up team and someone was helping me with my outfit also. It was a simple but fashionable dress with some simple black high heel shoes.
Third Person POV
Louis was heading to the Grammy’s because of his new movie getting picked for one of the categories, but Y/n also got a nomination for Top artist, and album of the year. The both of them were so close to seeing each other in real life and they didn’t expect each other to be so starstruck.
Louis’s POV
I was walking around the red carpet with Millie when she got asked to do an interview so I stood back and waited for her to be done. While I was waiting I heard a familiar laugh being heard only a couple of feet ahead of me. I then snapped my head into the direction to find the one and only Y/n Y/l/n laughing with the person interviewing her. It took me a little while to process everything that was going around me because I could only see her in the room. I felt my heart start beating faster and felt my hands start shaking a little bit.
Millie’s POV
I was finally done with my interview when I saw Louis staring at something so I followed his eyes and saw him staring at Y/n. I felt a smirk form on my lips and pulled him over to her with all the strength I had in me.  I heard him telling me to stop but I didn’t listen since I waited to meet her too.
Your POV
I was talking to someone when I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder which made me turn my head. I saw a teenage girl and a teenage boy behind me, so I smiled before giving them my attention.
“ Hi, I’m Millie Bobby Brown and this is my friend Louis Partridge.”  she said
“ Hi, Are you guys fans? Also, are you guys by any chance actors in this movie called Enola Holmes?” I questioned
Millie looked at me shocked and nodded her head. I gave her a smile before holding my arms out to give her a hug. I felt her wrap her arms around me. “ I am such a big fan of your music and I could say the same for him back there too.”
I let out a giggle before releasing her and looked behind her to find Louis just staring. I walked over to him and gently put my hand on his shoulder which made him jump. I raised an eyebrow “ Are you good?” He then just gave me a nod. I turned my head due to hearing Millie speak.
“ He was just in shock. He's in love with you.”
Louis’s POV
I felt my face getting hotter by the minute and glared at Millie. She gave me an innocent look and smirked before walking off and leaving me with Y/n. I saw her turn around and smile at me.
“ So in love with me.” She teased
I gave out a chuckle before scratching the back of my neck and looking back at her. I was about to answer her but someone told us to head to the seats to hear the winners. I watched her walk away and smiled before heading to my seat next to Millie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once the awards were over I decided to search for Y/n before leaving to head back to my hotel room. I saw her getting hugs from people so I stood back.
Your POV
I smiled at everyone and turned due to feeling eyes on me. I saw Louis and smiled at him. I walked over to him and gave him a hug and whispered. “ Congrats on your award.” I felt his breath on the side of my neck and heard him doing the same to me. I then pulled back due to hearing my name and slipped a piece of paper to him before kissing the side of his cheek.
Third Person POV
Louis stood there with a shocked expression again. He then looked down at the piece of paper to find her number and a message that said ‘ call me’. He then felt himself smile before heading back to his hotel to rest up.
‘Time Jump’
Y/n was chilling in her apartment writing a song when she heard her phone ring. She picked it up to find an unknown number, but just answered it hoping it would be Louis.
“ Hello?” she said with caution
“ Hi” she heard him say
Which made her let out a little giggle. “ I thought you would never call me.” she responded with. Louis chuckled on the other end. “ Yea, sorry about that. I was a little scared to call you.” Before he could say anything else he heard giggles coming from the other end of the line.
“ Why Louis?” Louis thought hard about what his next response was going to be because he didn’t want to straight up say because we were meant to be together or I was just scared of rejection. Louis finally decided to just ask..
“ Y/n.” he took a pause “ I was wondering if you would like to go out to dinner with me?”
Your POV
I let out a gasp when I heard those words and started nodding but forgetting he couldn't see me so I said..
“ Ofcourse, I will go out with you, Louis.”
Then we just chatted about our days for the rest of the day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The day my date with Louis came so quickly then I could have blinked and I was not prepared. I ran all over my house looking for things to finish off my outfit before it was time to go.
I heard a knock on my door indicating that he was here so I slipped on my heels and carefully made my way to the door. Once I opened it I was met with those hazel eyes that I fell in love with.
“ Wow, you look stunning.” he said
I felt myself start blushing. I then took in his look and stated that… “ Well you look really handsome.”
He then held his hand out for me to take. “ My lady,” he said in his accent, which made me let out a small giggle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We were coming up to the end of the date already. He took me to this beautiful restaurant where we are now sharing a piece of cake. I saw him staring at me so I questioned him.
“ What?”
He let out a soft chuckle. “ Nothing, you're just really beautiful looking under this light.”
I felt myself start to blush which made me look down. Before I knew it I felt two fingers lift it back up. “ Don’t look down, you're gorgeous when you get all flustered.” That only made me blush harder. “ Stop.” I said giggling which made him chuckle.
Before I knew it we were back in his car driving back to my place. I was looking out the window when I felt him put his hand on my leg, which sent chills all over my body. I then put my hand on top of his and intertwined our fingers together. I smiled at the thought of us going on more dates.
Louis’s POV
I pulled into her driveway and parked my car. I turned to face her when I saw her already looking at me. I then released her hand and got out of the car to go to her side and open it for her. I walked her to her door where we both stood there for a little while. I then took a risk and leaned forward. I could feel her breath on me, I then closed the gap between us. I could feel her smile into the kiss before I felt her wrap her arms around the back of my neck. I wrapped my arms around her waist to pull her in to me more. She pulled away but kept her forehead against mine.
“ I really like you Louis.” She whispered against my lips
I smiled and said, “ I really like you too Y/n.”
I then leaned in again to give her another goodnight kiss before heading off. I walked over to my car and got in, I then waved at her with a smile on my face and pulled out of the driveway.
Third Person POV
Y/n watched Louis drive off into the distance. She felt a smile creep on her face before heading inside to dream about her date with him. Louis felt the same as her. He felt all giddy inside and he could help but smile at the thought of her. He was already planning the next date for them to go on together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Man this is long, but it was worth it because I got major butterflies from writing this for you. I hope you enjoy and if you would like more Louis then comment and I definitely write more of him.
UNDER THE CANYON MOON
pairing: josh kiszka x female!reader warning(s): mostly fluff, just brief mentions of alcohol and sex  word(s): 2k note: hi hi hi !! this is just a little something i wrote up the last couple of days with the inspiration of light my love, canyon moon by harry styles, and the interview where josh talked about road-tripping the u.s. last summer <3 i don’t write one shots often but let me know what you all think bc i might shuffle some more out soon lol. hope you all enjoy !! :)
The Los Angeles sun was hot, beating down onto the city basking in its late-summer hues. You parked your car on the street in Silver Lake and carried a bag of food and drink tray to the door of a recording studio, more than prepared to be swarmed by hungry boys who had been cooped up in the studio since five a.m. on the dot that morning. They had a breakthrough the night before with a new song, and after getting home and going to bed for a few hours, the creative juices started flowing again and they were back in the booth.
A windchime on the door sang as you pulled the door open and walked inside, greeting their manager who was at a table by the door.
“The boys here?”
“Down the hall,” he nodded, pointing a finger in the direction of the hallway. “They’re more rowdy than usual so be prepared,”
You laughed and turned down the hall, walking towards the studio. The walls were decorated with memorabilia of rock and roll greats and record plaques, and among them, you spotted a picture of the four boys with their Grammy award. It seemed like time had passed so quickly. They won the award for the first album and they were already working on their third, shooting them further into stardom.
“Coffee’s here!” You shouted in a really bad New England accent when you noticed the recording light was flipped off above the door.
You stepped into the room to a chorus of cheers and “thank god you're here”’s that made you laugh while sitting the food and drinks down on the table and they all rushed over. You handed out the specific orders and pointed to which drinks was theirs when they got handsy and tried to grab everything from her out of both excitement and some desperation for caffeine.
“Our savior,” Jake said, reaching out and grabbing your shoulders to give them a gentle shake before taking the coffee you were holding out to him, and then you handed Danny’s to him, too.
“Just the coffee girl here,”
“Well, you’re a little bit more than that,” Josh said, walking over to the table to grab his full cup.
You pressed a hand against the table, leaning over to him. “Just a little?”
“A little bit,” he shot you a wink before swiftly pressing a kiss to your cheek.
You were more than just a “little more” than the coffee girl, you were typically their designated drunk driver, the one who took all of their candid photos, the mediator in times of need, and well, the girlfriend of the lead singer, too.
Everyone in the studio took their food and drinks and scattered among the seating area in a break from recording. Instead of one tiny room with all of them cramped together, they had a wide open space with booths for the different instruments and bean bag chairs and big comfy, velvet sofas, and there was dim lighting with deep toned rugs that gave off the vibe of a more relaxed feel rather than the fluorescent-light, tiled-floor feeling that made them feel rushed and confined by rules they didn’t set themselves.
You liked the studio, too, and often took naps on the sofa while listening to them play instruments individually in the recording booths and while they were writing. One night they had found you at two a.m., bundled up with a blanket on the bean bag chair after they spent the night writing in the front room on the piano, but it wasn’t the first time as you often napped in their Nashville recording offices, too.
“You guys been busy today?” You asked jokingly while lowering onto the sofa armrest, receiving nothing but glares shot in your direction. “Okay, okay, touchy subject,”
With a mouthful of bread, Sam pointed to Josh, “Josh finished a song, didn’t you?” He was grinning.
You hummed in joy and surprise, grabbing Josh’s knee as he sat next to you. “Really?”
It had been a rough few days for all of them as they tried to shuffle out a few more additions to the new album. It felt incomplete with something missing, but they couldn’t quite put their finger on what it was exactly, so they attempted to bring back and revamp old songs, write and record new ones, but nothing seemed to stick, until now.
“Yeah, wanted to wait and show you later, but someone can’t keep his trap shut.” Josh said, pretending to be serious before cracking a smile and taking a sip of his coffee. “Just wanted it to be a surprise,”
“Well it can still be a surprise, I’m surprised now,” you said. “Can I hear it? Or read what you got?”
Josh nodded and stood, grabbing your hand and pulling you with him. There was a little recording room fit with a piano inside, his writing journal placed on the music stand where he had scribbled notes and keys and melodies in pen. He picked it up and handed it to you.
“Nothing seemed to click until last night, when I started putting it together.” He said.
“Is that why you wouldn’t tell me what it was when you all got back to the house?”
Josh shrugged, pinching his bottom lip between his thumb and forefinger. “Yeah, yeah, I wanted it to be special when you first heard it.”
You sat the coffee cup down onto the floor while lowering into the small chair in the corner, holding the journal like it was the most delicate piece of art in the world. In silence, while Josh watched on anxiously, you read the words he had splayed across the blank page.
     Can you light my love?      Flames glowing bright as the sun      Deeper than oceans you run      Watch as our world has begun
     Your mind is a stream of colors      Extending beyond our sky      A land of infinite wonders      A billion lightyears from here now
You felt your throat tighten, tears tempted your eyes.
It was a love song.
“Josh-”
“Oh god you hate it don’t you, you dread it, despise it,”
“Oh shut up, I’m in tears right now, you know I love it.” You looked up at him with a smile and a sniffle.
His words across the page were sloppy, some cursive, written in different pens of different colors, some lines crossed and scribbled out, others underlined.
“Your mind is something I will never fully understand.” You told him as he sat down on the chair next to you. “How the fuck did you come up with this-”
“I was thinking about our trip out here, the week we spent driving out and all of the stuff we did… and how I think I fell more in love with you.” His voice softened.
You reached out, placing your arm on his shoulder, fingers playing with his curls. “I can’t put it into words how much I love it, how much I love you,” you said, “and you make me sound so lovely when in reality I know I was a pain in the ass that entire trip.”
“Yeah, but my pain in the ass,” he kissed the inside of your arm.
Two weeks before the boys left Nashville to head to Los Angeles, Josh called you at midnight with an idea in mind – the two of you renting a camper to drive out to L.A., falling into all of the tourist traps along the way and stopping in random small towns to sleep while exploring the in between, which would definitely beat the boring four-hour flight. And you, half asleep and across the country, agreed.
It would be fun. Right?
And it was. Every time someone asked how it went, you called it “the most magical week of my life.”
While the others waited behind for their flights the next week, you and Josh set off from Nashville, heading west with only the destination in mind and a trusty map in hand. Everything else just came to you both.
The first stop was three hours in the trip, in Memphis. You and Josh roamed Graceland on Elvis Presley Boulevard and had lunch near Sun Studio before taking in the mementos and relics at the Blues Hall of Fame where Josh talked your ear off, rattling off more details about each band and singer than was on the info-cards on the wall.
Then it was two hours to Little Rock, falling asleep in the back of the camper after a take-out dinner outside of a random supermarket. Sitting in lawn chairs in the middle of a parking lot, you held Josh’s hand under a blanket and watched the pink sunrise over the hills, and then it was back on the road again.
From Oklahoma City to Amarillo, you fiddled with the map when Josh got lost after a wrong turn in a small town where he insisted on seeing the giant 66-foot LED soda bottle sculpture, and in the middle of northern Texas, he made it up to you by cooking your favorite dinner. You thanked him in a quiet whisper as you crawled into the bed with him that night, sliding under the covers where he greeted you with warm hands and kisses against your neck that made you squeal with the tickle of his mustache and he grinned against your lips.
Josh got to choose the music all the way through New Mexico – Neil Young and Crazy Horse to John Denver’s Thank God I’m A Country Boy, and you were only able to squeeze in Joan Baez every hour when you stopped to stretch your legs on the side of the road, belting the words to him while he laughed at your voice cracks.
And after you both pitched the tent in the Petrified Forest in Arizona, Josh hummed the tune to some new song while you two sat under the midnight stars in the canyon with a roaring fire, his arm around you, his sweatshirt draped over your shoulders. When he tried to start telling you a scary story after you heard a weird noise outside the tent, you blindly hit him in the dark and accidentally hit his nose, causing you both to burst into laughter after the initial panic left. He laughed loudly into your shoulder as you held his face in shock, catching the scent of your lavender lotion, and his body relaxed when the laughter died down, feeling so at peace in his life with you there.
It was the tail end of the trip, but the excitement hadn’t died down yet. After showers in the camper in the middle-of-nowhere-Arizona and five hours west, you and Josh found a bar outside of Las Vegas that resembled Coyote Ugly, so you both had a round of tequila sodas and margaritas before walking around the small town that evening and sleeping off the tipsy-headaches in the air conditioning. On top of the covers, you looked at Josh napping in the sunshine, cheeks flushed red, curls poofy from the wind, and you felt your heart grow in your chest before falling asleep next to him.
And then came Los Angeles, the final stop, the dreaded one. But you and Josh didn’t tell anyone that either of you were sad to be back with them in L.A. when they asked, and instead, you two smiled and hugged everyone after piling out of the camper in the drive-way of the Silver Lake house.
Cleaning out the camper, tossing cheesy novelty t-shirts at each other and laughing at how many socks you two managed to lose along the way and how many bug bites were added, watching the developed clips Josh had filmed of scenes in the desert and you asleep in the passenger seat, you both were nostalgic about a trip that just ended.
It was so easy, so freeing to just be together on the road, with only the destination in mind. It revealed a part of them that the other didn’t see often, like your tendencies to get your lefts and rights mixed up while giving directions, and Josh’s equally awful sense of direction didn’t exactly pair with the fact that he was a maniac while driving in the first place.
But those parts were just added to the long list of why you and him loved each other in the first place. So you became the designated driver after Amarillo and Josh stuck to telling you “left or right” for the rest of the time. It was a compromise, another reason why you two worked so well together.
It was a form of love in itself.
“We’ll have to drive all the way back to Nashville then, so you can write more songs about me.” You teased.
Josh rolled his eyes but cracked into a grin a second later. “Let’s not get too carried away,” but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t always mentally reliving the night under the canyon moon.
Tattoo Shop AU - a quick, practical guide for writers
Guest Post by lebanon-hangover
lebanon-hangover said: this is based on my personal experience with the industry only, so depending on the era and country you are portraying, it may not be 100% accurate for your setting.
Hygiene
It may not be obvious at first glance, but most tattooists are clean freaks. We work with human blood every day, and we get clients from all ages, ethnic and social economic backgrounds, with all sorts of medical conditions.
We usually mop frequently, bleach the sinks, wipe down everything, and use cling film or bags to wrap everything. I mean fucking everything. We also scrub in, and sanitise the area on the person we work on.
Needles are collected in a sharps bin, and handled very carefully. Medical waste goes in yellow bags, and both are collected by a professional service.
Used ink caps may look full, but the ink gets diluted by blood. Like you dip the inky needle into the person, but you also dip the person’s blood into your ink. These are medical waste too.
Cleaning up must be done promptly after the session. Bin everything disposable, put things through the ultrasonic and the autoclave, and sanitise the area. We may take machines apart, but more for maintenance than cleaning, sometimes we swap parts in them too.
We have two sinks, one for hand washing, one for cleaning.
All inks and needles have use by dates.
The internal dynamics of a studio
Depending on the country, some tattoo shops tend to have ties to biker gangs, and some of those internal dynamics and unwritten rules are often present.
There’s a pecking order and it’s dead serious. Basically the longer you’ve been in a shop, the higher ‘rank’ you are, you get the better positioned stations, first pick of walk-ins, etc (Unless the client is asking for someone by name). Regardless of your actual experience in the industry, like if you move into your old apprentice’s shop, they are still senior to you. If the owner or their partner is an artist, obviously they are on top of the chain by default.
We are self employed, but we have a boss. You are only making money if you are working, but you still have set work hours.
We get paid by the clients, and we pay the studio a cut. In return, there are some items provided by them, and some we buy for ourselves. Usually the chairs, tattoo beds, gloves, cleaning products, clip cord covers, masks, aprons, ink caps, vaseline, green soap, and some basic ink is provided by the shop. We buy our own machines, arm rests, stations, pedals, power supplies, clipcords, tips and grips, needles, special colours, stencil fluid…these are a personal preference, and often depend on the artists’ style.
We totally ask to try out each other’s equipment sometimes, or ask for a certain type of needle if we ran out.
The receptionist is usually just one of us, maybe a piercer, but it also can be a hired person in top studios.
The apprentice in the traditional system is often mistreated, and they have to pay for their education, have to be there multiple days a week and don’t make any money. It’s kind of like a tear them down, build them back up again thing to see if they are really serious about the job. Times are slowly changing, but 99% of them will always need a second job. Most of them are working as bar staff.
When you open a new studio, you must visit all the existing local ones and introduce yourself, otherwise you may get a brick through the window. Otherwise there’s not much beef among individual artists, they are often friends, go to conventions together and party after, etc.
The Artists
Tattooing is a fairly physical job, stretching skin is very important. We have to also keep our clients safely still, so we often use positions to pin them down a bit. Sometimes you hit a reflex point on the foot or under a knee, and you don’t want to get kicked. Sometimes you have to pull away super fast, cos they are sneezing, yawning or giggling.
Most tattooists drink a lot of coffee, tea or energy drinks.
Some people are all rounders, some have specific styles, but we recognise each other’s art styles. Sometimes we delegate work to each other, if we think our coworkers style fits the concept better. For example if there’s a person who does script well, we give them those projects.
We don’t like when people come in with designs from other artists. Art theft is frowned upon, and we work best with our own drawings.
Most apprentices practice on their own legs, and sometimes we tattoo each other when it’s quiet. Most people have cover ups, or bad pieces from their early days. The artists’ own tattoos sometimes are in a different style than what they do, but we like to collect ink from friends or colleagues we admire.
In the first 1-2 years one is an apprentice, then junior artist. At 5-8 years of tattooing, you have earned your stripes and are considered an experienced artist.
Conventions are really fun, but can be stressful. You can make good money working at one, and sometimes get awarded for it too. We can also spend a lot at a convention.
Sometimes we poke our fingers by accident, and it’s a scary thing. Good case scenario is just some random dots on your fingers. Let’s not go into the bad case scenario.
We do guest spots sometimes, just to meet new clients, and change it up a bit.
We spend a lot of time drawing up things, and designs are meant to fall on specific muscles, stretch with the skin a certain way, so they are tailored to the body proportions of the client. A good tattoo is also an optical illusion, complimenting the body shape.
Social media presence is like a second job, you need good photos, and you need to market yourself.
Tattoo ink does not wash out, so some stains are inevitable when pouring it out. Those ink bottles get stuck so easily, and we wrestle them a lot. We try to avoid it, but wearing all dark colours is a thing for a reason.
The Clients
Tattooists need to have a good ‘bedside manners’ too. We get nervous or self conscious people, and we are told personal things during long sessions. For example scar coverups and memorial pieces can be very emotional.
We have pretty good poker faces and first aid trainings. People can faint, get shaky, throw up, some have seizures, have b.o., get sweaty, etc the same way as at a blood donation event? It’s no big deal really. We sit them down, give them some water and some sugar, and re-book them if necessary. Most artists keep some wet wipes, mouth wash, deodorant, sweets, maybe even some clean clothes at work, just in case.
If someone comes in with a wild idea for a jobstopper, we would sit down and have a long talk. If they haven’t got many tattoos, we usually try to stir them towards more safe choices, offering them creative ideas. It’s like those jedi mind tricks sometimes.
If someone is undecided, we show them our own hand drawn flash sheets. Once its gone, its gone tho, we don’t use the designs twice.
Pinterest is full of photoshopped fake tattoos, some that won’t even work as real ink. Many people also touch up their work digitally on photos, so some clients have really unrealistic expectations.
We can totally tell if someone is intoxicated or hangover. It thins the blood, and they bleed out the ink, and it’s super annoying. if it’s bad, they will be sent home and rebooked.
Some folks are self conscious about body hair, their size, stretch marks and scars. Chances are, we have seen similar, and we aren’t bothered by it, because it’s work. Surgery scars, scars from accidents, self harm scars, burns, we see it all the time. We shave some really hairy dudes all the time girl, your legs are fine. Seriously. If something makes tattooing you dangerous we will tell you.
Fit, muscular people are harder to tattoo because they are really firm. Its a workout for us.
Everyone gets midnight messages about the aftercare from nervous clients, and drunken booty calls about getting inked right at this second. We have copy paste replies…
We get creeps sometimes. Stalking, weird conversations, tmi info dumps etc.
Other things to include (for fun, or for plot reasons)
We sometimes have those “oh fuck” moments. We all do, but mistakes can be fixed, and we play it cool.
Tattooing takes time. Usually 30 minutes to multiple sessions though years and years.
Healing tattoos takes about 2-4ish weeks, and your characters shouldn’t go roll around in dirt, sunbathe, swim, pick at the scabs. Nasty infections, and messed up tattoos would be the results.
If you have a strong immune system, and you get a lot of work done in one sitting, you may get a brief bit of a temperature. It’s normal, and will go away.
Its a lot easier to get seriously drunk after getting a tattoo. Be careful.
We sometimes draw on each other for practice with our marker pens.
Tattoos are inside the skin, not on top of it. Imagine a low opacity, skin toned layer over the ink, adding to the healed tattoos’ colour. Please stop making your characters skin fully transparent.
Heavy blackwork and palms are done in multiple sessions.
You can’t cover up moles, because if they develop skin cancer, the dermatologist can’t see the signs.
There’s a stereotype about piercers having blacked out sleeves.
Stencil fluid looks just like cum.
You get that annoying itch on your face when you scrubbed in, put on gloves and finally ready to go.
Some artists have a strong preference for coil or rotary machines, and they bicker about it a lot. Coils are louder, more punchy, and more traditional, perfect for lineart. They can be customised, and they last forever. They are also called glorified doorbells by people who prefer rotaries. Rotary machines are smoother, lighter, and often use needles that are pulled back into the cartridges for safety. They are better for shading and delicate line work. Older tattooists often say they are dildo or butt plug shaped, overly delicate and are for “soft millennials” only.
Every artist owns like 5 to 20 machines, and they have specific machine builders they are loyal to.
The “which cable is broken and cutting out” guessing game. Clip cords and pedal cables get worn out easily, and that results in your machine running really jerky.
Walk-in always show up 10 minutes before closing.
We often look quite silly at work. Sleeves rolled up, folks use all sorts of plastic ppe, headlamps, and we tie up our hair. Add couple of purple smears from carbon paper, and we aren’t scary at all.
