different anon: thank you for your gif making post! do you always use the same settings for vapoursynth/photoshop? can you share them with us? do you use windows or mac? is there a difference? i made my first gif today but it looks so ugly. and my pc is super old and slow. maybe i’ll better stop and just admire your work instead.

i used to change settings on vs all the time but now i just use the KLMN denoise filter, here r the settings (its just the default settings): 

oh also i process in 60fps fast when i use ts files and i usually put nothing when its mp4 and i sharpen on ps using smart sharpen and here are my last settings: 

this varies tho, i usually change up the amount and the noise reduction  depending on the quality of the footage i used. sometimes i just use vs to resize the gifs and then denoise on ps using that option depends on my mood loll also i dont understand sharpening so most of the time i just play with it until it looks decent. u didnt ask for it but for the speed of the gifs i do .05 for mp4 and .04 for ts files! 

im on mac now, but i started giffing on a pc that was SO slow and had so little storage it took me ages just to make one single gif, it takes me a few seconds to save one gif on this one compared to several minutes on the old one so yeah i really feel the difference between both but its bc that old laptop was a nightmare 😭i dont think there’s a difference between mac and pc it just depends on the quality of the laptop itself! giffing on an old laptop is hard but if me and my impatience made it through so can u!!! nooo dont give up!!!! its ur first gif so of course its not gonna be perfect!!!! just like everything it takes practice!! ive been giffing for a little over a year now and when i look back at my old gifs back in january/february they were really awful 😭 ps was so intimidating to me bc it has so many options but i learned a little bit more about it and i still keep learning bc there is so much i dont know yet so dont give up!!! its already amazing that u created something from scratch on ur own!!!! i remember being so psyched when i made my first gif even if it looked wack HFGDHFG im here if u ever need help!!! making gifs is fun and it would b too bad if u gave up this soon :(  im sorry i talked so much omg but i hope this helped a little bit 🥺 if something is not clear i’d be happy to help!!!

Hi it’s me again (the one who asked about the gif thing) I’m both interested in the process and the colouring and sharpening and thank you so much for being willing to help it means a lot

hi again! no no it's really nothing and as i already said, im more than happy to help! idk if you want to know how i make my live performance gifs or mv gifs but i'll describe both processes!

it got a little bit long lol

- process: so for my mv sets, i first search for either a bugs, melon or master (master > rest) online. i then use mplayer for mac to screenshot the parts that i want to gif (found a tutorial online on how to screenshot with mplayer, idk what settings i had to change again but i can look for you if you want to know!) -> open ps and with "scripts" ("load as stack" i think?) import the screenshots -> convert to video time line -> convert to frames -> convert to frame animation -> reverse frames and delete the first frame. i then crop it using the ps crop tool and select the dimensions that i want (540 x 400-540 px depends on what looks the best). for live performances i use vapoursynth with denoise (6.1.1.1.2 ? something like that? idk) and sharpen in ps

- sharpening: for my mv sets, it really depends on the file im working with. i have three different kind of settings i can use, and if these don't fit i just do smth else lol, but i use lens blur, radius 0.3, 500, select "use legacy" "more accurate" + lens blur, radius 10, 10 OR gaussian blur, radius 0.3, 500 + lens blur, radius 10, 10 OR lens blur 0.2, 500 + gaussian blur 0.2, 500 + lens blur, radius 10,10. and if this doesnt look good i fool around a bit with the settings :D. for my live performances, i dont really know .. i think i fool around a bit with lens blur 0.2 or gaussian blur 0.3 ? idk i try something and select what fits

- colouring: okay so for my mv sets i stay true to the original colours. i like to add contrast and to make the colours really pop (im still struggling with this btw) but qua process i dont really have a standard psd i use i just colour from scratch everytime cuz every mv or scene is different . itd be kinda weird to make everything look the same imo. anyways i usually use the levels layer and select the brightest + darkest spot. most of the times this adds a lot of difference. so much sometimes that i only need to add one other layer but those moments are rare. i then add some contrast (still with levels) . i then move on to selective colour and make the neutrals/greys darker. i then go the colour balance and see what fits. then go to brightness contrast, add some brightness + contrast. go to vibrance and add some vibrance. then go back to selective colour and change the settings of some colours if needed. but this is not my standard process. sometimes i use 7 layers and sometimes 2. really depends. btw this is my own preference!! there are so many different kind of styles of colouring id advice you to just look around and try something for yourself and see what you like the most :D

so for my live performances i always struggle lmao. i do the same as above but with live performances its far more difficult. i make tiny adjustments and i have no idea honestly. i use levels/selective colour/colour balance/contrast+brightness/photo filter/vibrance/gradient map sometimes/colour lookup/channel mixer sometimes/hue+saturation to get rid of some colours. i just use everything basically sjfjsf

personally, i use pc!! everything runs smoothly on my desktop its nice C”: the only time i’ve ever made gifs on mac were these the star gifs, and every single second of it was awful NSJDKHFSDJK 

(to be fair i think thats bc my laptop is very old and slow, but hey they turned out alright-ish and thats what matters)

oki dokey! its honestly p simple one u memorize the Steps! (if there’s anything you’re still ?? abt pls pls message me! im bad at typing out instructions so like jfjajfhgowigowa im scared i’ll leave u MORE confused mfmmgg) !!! 

i’ll use my lil red riding chan gif to show you!!!

1) open up the video

open up whatever video you plan on giffing !! (”file” > “navigate” > open up whatever video it is you want to gif!) 

2) cutting to the scene you want

using the snipping tool, you’ll cut the video where you want to start the gif. then you’ll let it play till where you want the gif to end! and hit the scissor icon again. now you’ll have the desired clip. 

now you’ll have 3 ‘layers’ in the layers tab. you can go ahead and delete the top and bottom layers so you only have the middle layer (the one i have highlighted)!

(side note: if you’re trying to get it PRECISE and down to the frame, using the toggles that allow you to go from frame to frame is helpful! 

this’ll let you get it down to precisely where you’d like!) 

3) getting the frames

(make sure the layer is highlighted)

so you see the four lil lines? you click on those and you’ll get a drop down menu. 

so as i’ve highlighted, you’ll click on “convert frames” and then “flatten frames into clips” 

you will now have the frames from the video! ok, now you click on the “convert to frame animation” button! (the one i’ve circled) 

now your timeline should look like this: 

now going back to the four little lines from earlier: 

you’re going to “make frames from layers” 

your timeline should now be filled with all the frames from your video! 

(side note: try to keep your gif less than 80 frames. the bigger your gif the bigger the file the more trouble you’ll have saving, uploading, etc. tumblr has a limit on size for gifs so ! be very wary ! )

4) timing

so every frame has a lil time code on it! 

as you can see, the first one is 1.27 seconds, the second is 0 seconds- i can’t speak for every gifmaker, so i’ll just say what kind of speeds i personally use. i really prefer a little bit of a slower gif- to me it feels a little smoother and is easier on the eyes, and if you’re adding text to your gif, then the reader has a bit more time to read (if your subs change in the middle or smth) 

so going back to our four lil lines 

you click on “select all frames” (or you can click on the first frame, scroll to the end of the frames and while holding your ‘shift’ key, you click on the last frame; has the same result!) now, you go to the lil drop down arrow next to the time code on any of the frames, and input your time settings! 

i use the setting of 0.07 seconds! its a little slower. some people do ‘0.05′ and some people will leave the gif at its original speed (which is ‘0′ second delay) !!!

and now you hit ‘ok’ and your times should all be the same! at this point, give the frames a once over and see if everything is running fine and you have all the frames you want, by clicking on the play button and seeing how it looks.

(side note: make sure that your looping times is set to ‘Forever’!!!)

if everything is fine then you can move on! if you think that you’d like to remove some frames then you can select those frames individually (or by the clicking and shift method from earlier) and using the lil trash icon. you can delete those frames! now you should have all the frames you want!

5) cropping + resizing 

from your tools sidebar, you’ll pick the crop tool 

in the bar along the top of the screen, you’ll see a lil drop down menu

okay, this is also another preference thing? so like, depending on the set you’re making, you might want like a different size! 

in the first gif, i used ‘W x H x Resolution’ option, whereas the second gif i used the ‘4:5 (8:10)’ ratio! so like, its v dependent on what kind of gif you’re making. for 2x2 or 3x3 sets i tend to use 4:5 while single sets i use a free ratio so i can crop how i’d prefer the gif to look! 

so with the red riding hood gif i used the ‘4:5′ ratio! 

when you choose an option, you’ll get this sort of screen 

if you click once, you’ll be given a grid and the ability to now resize!!! 

when you’re happy with your selection, you can click the checkmark i circled in the first picture, and it’ll crop your image!

yay!! okay! now you have to resize the image! so you go to the top of the screen and you choose: ‘Image’

from here you’ll choose ‘Image Size’ or alternatively hit ‘ALT + CTRL + I’ 

you’ll get this dialogue box !!! where you can now imput your width (the height will automatically resize!) 

alright so for sets, i’m not too sure about other ppl, but i resize my gifs following this usually! 

500 pixels == 1 gif

245 pixels == 2 gifs side by side

160 pixels == 3 gifs side by side 

those sizes usually look fine on tumblr and also work well with the image size limit!!! 

(i resized this gif to 245px because i was putting 2 gifs side by side!) 

after you’ve imputed the size, you can now hit okay! you’ll get this dialogue box:

go ahead and tick the ‘don’t show again’ and then click ‘Convert’ 

6) sharpening

okay, normally, you’d have to go through frame by frame and sharpen, but ; v ; your time gets eaten tf up so like… this is just the way i sharpen all the frames at the same time!! 

so go ahead and select everything in your time line, either by the shift++click method or by going to the ‘select all frames’, and then go over to the layers panel and click on the bottom most frame, then scroll to the top and while holding shift, click on the top most frame. 

everything should be selected like this! 

go the four lines again and click on the convert to video timeline

your timeline should now look like this: 

okay, now, going back to your top bar, you’ll pick ‘Filter’ 

and then click on ‘Convert for Smart Filters’ 

(side note: you’ll get another dialogue box i believe, so just tick the do not show and go ahead and continue) 

clicking on filter again, you’ll go down to ‘Sharpen’ and then ‘Smart Sharpen’. you should get another dialogue box 

these are the settings that i use! and once you put them in, you can go ahead and press okay, and your gif will be sharpened 

(side note: there’s only SO much that sharpening can do to your gif. the best scenario: you have a video thats 1080p and the sharpening will add. but if your video quality isn’t the greatest then be understanding, ps can only do so much… also !!! some ppl sharpen twice, if you think it’ll look good you can go ahead and do that!!! i prefer to sharpen once, so that it doesn’t get too grainy!!!) 

your gif is now sharpened!!! 

7) colouring 

uhh this one i can’t give you too many instructions for?? bc every gifmaker tends to have their own colouring style. it’ll really be up to your discretion and preference on how you colour things!!! 

these are the tools when it comes to colouring!!! you can like… go to town and test different colourings! i shit you not… this is what takes me the LONGEST during giffing now.. like once i had the process down?? i was like ???? what should i make the colouring???

this is what i had on this specific gif- every video will vary and you’ll soon figure out what colourings suit what videos or lightings or etc !!! 

8) watermarking (optional) 

this is optional but like………. in this day and age…………………….

so you select the text tool and you just type your url in whatever font you want??? 

these are the settings i use!!! and then i set the ‘Opacity’ at however much i think is suitable. (darker gifs, i might make the watermark a lil less visible, whereas brighter gifs i’ll make it a lil stronger!)

9) saving to the web 

YAY! we’re done! you made the gif! pat your back!!! 

mm okay now you have to save it !! so you can either do ‘CTRL++SHIFT++ALT++S’ or!!! 

‘File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)’ 

your gif will take a moment to render, but when it does you’ll get this screen!!! 

these are the settings you should adjust to !!! 

(side note: pay attention to the size !! 

above certain mb your gif will be too big to upload !!! and tumblr will give you an error and tell you to try sizing down!!!)

also make sure: 

that it says ‘Forever’ !!!! 

and finally !! give your gif a play by clicking on the play button! make sure everything is fine and that your gif loops, and everything looks how you want it!!!

if you’re happy with how everything looks! 

click save !!! 

you can chose where you wanna save it and name it aptly !!! 

10) BASK IN YOUR AWESOMENESS!!! (AKA: uploading your gif) 

i wont explain this but now u get to upload your !! gif to tumblr!! eee :D

hi there!! hfhsl i’m not sure if you’re looking for a general tutorial or like how i colored it and stuff but i’ll try to do both amdlshfslhfs WARNING i suck at explaning stuff

ok so first you find a cute photo of someone in my case DOJAE ♡♡♡♡♡ here is the super adorable picture i used:

OK uh icon making isn’t science so you really just... paste it into photoshop and adjust the position etc etc. i like starting with a 200 px by 200 px canvas but it’s really up to you!! i downsize it later to 128px by 128 px so if you want you can just start with that size but it’s kind of hard to erase the background when your photo is too tiny 

ok now time to remove the background!! there are many ways to do this but i strongly recommend working with a MASK LAYER!! (so if you mess up you can get the parts you erased back easily) to add a mask layer just select the layer you’re masking and then click the little rectangle with the circle in the middle

and you should get this:

make sure when you’re masking, you have that mask layer selected!!! because or else it’ll start erasing the actual photo which then defeats the whole purpose of having a mask layer. check that your foreground color is white and background colour is black

ok so basically now you can just use the eraser or lasso tool or pen tool or whatever you use to remove the background!! AND NOW YOU MIGHT BE ASKING rini what is the difference if i just erased it normally.... WELL IF YOU MESS UP YOU JUST TAKE YOUR BRUSH TOOL AND YOU CAN EASILY RESTORE THE PHOTO! :o 21st century technology i know.... 

so when you’re done masking you should have something like this

(i used the lasso tool and did it in like 30 seconds so its kind of ugly but since im not actually making an icon ALLOW ME)

NOW time for the fun part: COLORING ❤️i really can’t make a tutorial for this part since it’ll be different for each photo but i like starting with exposure, color balance, selective color, hue/saturation in that order and then. if coloring is a big headache for you then you’re welcome to just slap on a psd bc yolo. 

idk about you but when i make icons i like to add the background last because the coloring often changes the background color so like you can start off with a pink background and then at the end.... it’s green somehow LOL but if you already added a background color and everything’s great then skip this next step.

select all the layers of coloring, right click, select “Group from Layers” or use shortcut command + g (mac users). now we want to add the same mask from the photo to the coloring so that it doesn’t affect the background. you can do that by right clicking the mask and selecting “Add Mask to Selection” (mac users can press and hold command while clicking the mask layer)

now select the coloring group and click the mask icon like before. tada now your group should have the same mask layer linked to it :D

now you can make the background whatever color you want and you should end up with something like this:

resize to 128 by 128 px (you can use avisynth if you want a sharper downsize)

now if you want a regular square icon then you’re basically done but if you want a circular one like mine then you just need to do one last part!

first unlock the background layer if you haven’t already (just click on the little lock beside it)

now select ALL the layers and make a new group.

next find the elliptical marquee tool:

change the style to Fixed Size and adjust to width and height to 128 px

and now you literally just centre the circle selection it makes. 

and add the selection as a mask AND LOOK MAGIC

now save it as a PNG and you are finished YAY upload it onto tumblr click click click oh look you’ve got yourself an icon NICE

ahh anon u flatter me!! thank you for your kind words!!! i honestly have ways to go, but it means a lot that u say this thank you 

so for starters i have a mac + photoshop cs5 so a lot of this tutorial will be based on what you do for that, but i’m sure u could do the same thing on pcs  (actually pcs have more programs available so i highly recommend, if u have a pc, finding a tutorial that is based around pcs) and other photoshop versions too! but i think the general process is still the same, a different tutorial might just be more nuanced^^

1. Finding/downloading your video~so for normal mp4 videos on youtube i use this website. it’s pretty useful it can download from actually a wide variety of sites like naver (up till 1080p!) ~for v app videos i use this site~ts files i find on kpopexciting or kpop24hrs (u need an account for kpop24hrs i think to download video but! signing up isnt difficult and its nothing fishy. i use it a lot esp for older ts files it has a good archive, kpopexciting tends to be faster though.)~the higher quality files you find the better! i find that it tends to go mp4~honestly finding the right high quality video is a HUGE part of making gifs look nice2. Extracting your video~there are many many many ways to extract your video but I highly recommend downloading avisynth! There are ways to download it for pc! avisynth is beautiful because it doesn’t really reduce the quality of your video to the extent that photoshop does, plus it can extract 60fps from ts files. some gifs ive made through avisynth ( x x x ) if you’re interested in avisynth further, tumblr user @/brandinator is a good place to start! if you want to know more regarding how to use it and a different tutorial through that, let me know! ~now i’m not sure if there is an avisynth tutorial for mac anymore, BUT theres another great program, vapoursynth, that mac users can look into. here’s a tutorial that i’ve found~Before I got avisynth I used VLC player for ts files but I had to basically screenshot each frame individually. Some gifs I’ve made through this method ( x x x ). these gifs are 60fps only bc i found a user who uploaded the ts file in 60fps. usually you cant get 60fps w/o avisynth. but this is also me saying that if you cant get avisynth or vapoursynth, there are still ways to work around it i think! one of my fav giffers for the longest time didnt use either!! and sharpening and coloring were always on point.~I think pcs can use kmplayer? id look into that if you have a pc~for normal mp4 videos I just use photoshops ‘import video frames to layers’ option (under file in the menubar)! you can use avisynth as well, but for me it takes forever to extract what i want in avisynth (minimum like a minute ish), whereas ps can get the part of the video i want to gif in a couple of seconds. I think it’s self explanatory but basically you find the video you want to extract, find where u want ur gif to start, and for photoshop cs5, you hit the ‘shift’ key and let the part u want giffed in the video play. when youre done u lift the shift key and hit ‘ok’ (idk if it differs for different versions of ps). i extract all!!! frames!! it makes it look smoother too :)

3. Coloring/Sharpening/Cropping/Etc~now this is the step that I can’t really give a tutorial on because honestly it varies for everyone! but i feel that this is the step that a lot of ppl need guidance with (me included) because it is the hardest step, probably because it is so ‘up in the air’ for lack of a better word? there is no one right way of doing it the possibilities are literally endless but here are some tips~Coloring:       ~most important rule: don’t whitewash ur gifs!!       ~other than that, the world is yours.       ~honestly have fun with this part! coloring is something that i haven’t fully learned yet       ~i tend to play around mainly with the curves, selective color, hue/saturation, and color balance layers       ~you can also download psds other ppl have made (i dont do this myself) and use those!      ~also i feel that a lot of the times, the right coloring can make ur gif seem higher quality. coloring can also play a role in reducing gif size if u do it correctly.      ~honestly this part is just a lot of experimentation, over the course of a gifset and over the course of time in general. some people find their coloring style easily, but i was not one of those people. ive spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to adjust what layers to get the colors that i want and i think only as of this era ive been able to execute the coloring i had pictured in my mind. so patience is a virtue!!! ~Sharpening:      ~ah yes my biggest enemy: sharpening      ~first things first, i sharpen my gifs using smart sharpen + topaz                  ~settings for my smart sharpen are 500%; 0.4                 ~check the box that says ‘more accurate’ and i personally remove ‘gaussian blur’      ~some people also use topaz denoise, and/or topaz clean     ~ honestly topaz is a lifesaver for me bc it smoothes out a lot of grain that can be introduced via coloring! also!!! it can reduce gif size by a lot!!!!!!!!!!!          ~on topaz denoise i hit the ‘light’ setting on the side and adjust the settings accordingly          ~idk how to use topaz clean even though I have it, because it refuses to work          ~to apply topaz you have to hit ‘flatten frames into layers’                ~some gifs i’ve made with just topaz and no avisynth ( x  x x x)        ~there are ways to make it look nice without topaz but i’ve forgotten how after i got it               ~id duplicate the frame then use smart sharpen and ‘gaussian blur’ under ‘blur’                       ~then adjust the opacity levels in some way.                       ~my settings for the opacity levels aren’t good so i’ll refrain from sharing               ~some gifs ive made through this method ( x x )        ~last but not least i’ll bring up avisynth again. avisynth is nice at preserving video quality                 ~a lot of ppl i know say they don’t even sharpen gifs out of avisynth                 ~here are some gifs i have made with avisynth + topaz ( x x x x x x x )    ~honestly when it comes to sharpening, im still floundering with it. my sharpening needs a lot of work but, amongst the people who i consider good sharpners, most of them use avisynth, topaz denoise and/or clean, and smart sharpen! so all the resources are here !

~Cropping:     ~it’s super important to follow tumblr dimensions otherwise gifs come out looking grainy! even when they’re not ! (case in point: x in which i used 168 instead of 178 for the dimensions)~Timing:   ~Timing is so important!!! I almost forgot!! Always make sure u dont have duplicate frames for starters! for 60fps source videos i use .03, for mp4s i typically use .04 but sometimes the frame rate is kinda funky so you may have to go slower accordingly! and the important thing about timing is that if u use smart object, when u save ur gif, it’ll be in a different timing? like .04 gets changed to .07 but in order to fix that, u can simply just save ur gif in the wrong timing, and then reopen the gif in ps, simply change the timing to what u want on all ur frames, and then save it again!! idk if that made any sense but laskdjf this was the biggest mystery for me for so long omg4. Saving the gif~personally the save settings I use are “Selective/Adaptive” ; “Diffusive”; Dither: 100%; 256 colors. sometimes this makes the gif super grainy so i use “pattern” instead of “diffusive” in those instances5. Pray Perseverance   ~a lot of the time when you’re giffing, gifs won’t come out the way you want it (i’m sure for every gifset i’ve uploaded on tumblr, there’s a gifset that i started making and never finished because it looked really bad). idk sometimes it feels like photoshop has its own will, sharpenings wont always work the same way each time, video quality won’t be the way you want it, i’m honestly still very experimental right now I don’t have ps figured out at all. so yeah…sometimes all u can do is that when u hit that save for web button (that ruins everything alskf), pray that ps doesnt mess it up too bad ahahaha but also that even when it does, its okay and you can try again! or try something new!

now….. how i did my edit is very fucking complicated and there is probably a MUCH simpler way out there to do it but uh…. you know… i will explain here, under the cut, how i did it to the best of my abilities. and a reminder: i learned to edit by key smashing, googling tutorials, pulling my hair out, asking for advice, closing my eyes and moving stuff around, and talking to my pal and photoshop QUEEN @herebyproxy. so uh this won’t be that great of a tutorial. 

lemme preface this by saying i have Photshop creative cloud. if you use GIMP or any other editing software it may look a little different and i cannot help you with all the buttons and mechanics though i wish i could. you could probably google a tutorial though? 

okay so uh first i made my edit how i wanted it and where i wanted the snow to be falling. so i made my snowglobe, i put my simself in there, i added the background to the snowglobe, messed around with that, woo woo wah, got it how i wanted it. for dis tutorial i am going to keep it plane jane.

okay we’ve made our edit. hoooooray, now there are two things you can do now. you can a) make your own snow (which i have done before but it takes fooorrrrever and it is very hard to get the natural movement of snow down) but i would still recommend doing it once or twice (i found a youtube tutorial fooorrrever ago. i think i googled “how to make falling snow particles gif” or something like that. or b) do what i did, and search “snow gif” and save one you like. once you’ve found and saved one you like, open it up in photoshop. the shorter the gif is the less frames you’ll have to deal with but whatevs. 

gr8! now you drag your edit over. literally click the image (or layer whatever floats your boat) and drag it over to the gif. it should pop up like so,

for my own sanity i resized the canvas to match the size of my bb gurl but uh anyway you can resize your image to match the gif size, or resize the canvas, whatever. do what you want it’s your edit. anyway now comes the time consuming probably unnecessary part. setting each layer to screen (you can select all the gif layers and just hit screen). the duplicating your edit layer so there is one for each gif layer. then hitting command (on the mac, idk what it is on pc…) and clicking your edit layer, to bring up the selection. and then clicking a gif layer, and hitting the mask layer button (the little rectangle with the circle in the middle) to hide all the extra gif we don’t want.

once you’ve done that make sure all the duplicates are underneath their gif layer. so you want one edit layer per gif layer and you want the edit layer under the gif layer. like sew.

okay! now you’re ready to merge each gif layer with its matching edit layer. this can take a bit of time depending on how many layers you have and all that jazz.

grrrrr8! now check your first layer so it is visible and bring up your “timeline” window from the window option. because everything is set to screen it may bring up every layer already ( i believe okyio had a tutorial on this) but i am MUY Difícil  and like to make SURE everything is done how i want it done so i delete anything that pops up except for the first layer by clicking “delete animation” anyway whatever, here is what it should look like

now i hit the three little lines to click “make frames from layers” bloop.

okay now all your layers will come up and now you just play around with the speed and looping options. i set mine for 1 sec at looping forever. gr8! now to export that heaux.

hit save, name it, and voila. this is not my best work but im love it for a tutorial.

sorry this was super long, super rambley, and probably super inconvenient. i am just set in my ways and this was the first way i learned to make gifs in PS and like the true taurus i am (stubborn and headstrong) i refuse to do it any other way. you might want to hit up some much better simblrs than eye for better advice but uh yeah! you can message me anon again, or in my inbox if this was confusing or you just wanna show me what you created

usually vixx or exid !! they are my bias groups and im always smiling while i gif them !! (also twice lately, ive been giffing them a lot !!)

never never never 480 and i try to stay away from 720 tbh. for performances tho i always get .ts files so they are higher resolution, but for other vids definitely 1080 nd if not 720 is okay sometimes

on this blog there is 2 and my gg blog there are like 8 jdskhfdjkf i just lov girls

all the time, ive deleted sets from drafts just bc they dont feel good enough

i try not to post too much, probably like once or twice a week if i can

not at allllll lmao, but my captures folder is v organized, if i take captures for more than one set at a time, they are in specific folders with group name/member/performance or other

i think i’ll just share generic tips! From each stage of the giffing process. i still have so much i can improve with in giffing, so i’m sorry if i give you super wrong advice ahhh but i hope this helps a little?it got super long so it’s under the read more!!

Downloading Videos

make sure it’s the highest quality video you can get. 1080p is your friend. ok honestly, when i’ve giffed, i havent really noticed a difference in quality between 2k/4k and 1080p? maybe im doing it wrong but honestly the only thing ive noticed is that 2k/4k just slows down my computer drastically and takes up way too much space on a computer that already has like zero space to begin with. so i tend to stick with 1080p. 

Also! if you can get 60fps, thats also nice bc it helps your gifs look smoother.

yaknow how i said 1080p is your friend? well ts files are your best friends/family. if you can torrent them or download the, your gifs will look super pretty. i highly recommend this for live performance gifs. you can find ts files for a lot of shows, but again, since my computer has

kpop24hrs and kpopexciting are two places i go for those live perf ts files! kpop24hrs tends to have more i feel (it’s where i go when i want to gif my rookie groups that dont have too much attention on them)

you can also find torrents on twitter, if you search the right things

Extracting Videos

ok for this, if you have a pc (so like not a mac) i HIGHLY recommend looking into avisynth. there’s this tumblr account named brandinator who i’ve heard gives really awesome tips for avisynth and made it really easy for people to get avisnyth.if youre like me and your stuck with a mac, or if you just want to stick with photoshop then you can read the rest of this

i have photoshop cs5? so my tips are generally based around that. 

for youtube videos (so basically mp4/avi format) i use photoshop’s video extraction feature. file—>import–>video frames to layersif your photoshop is like mine for whatever reason and it doesnt want to recognize mp4 files, then what i do is changed the .mp4 extension to a .avi extension (and its super easy to do on mac….i dont have a pc so idk how different that is) the quality doesnt really change either with that simple changing of the ending it sorta just tricks photoshop i guess lol idunno

when youre on the ‘video frames to layers’ window, make sure you don’t hit the ‘limit to every _____ frames’ bc that makes it lose the smoothness quality of gifs. maybe back when the gif limit was like 1mb that would have been important, but we live in a world of luxury now. so for smoother looking gifs, make sure that box is unchecked. other ppl (pc users i think) tend to use other video extraction softwares. i cant remember the name, but all i remember is that for macs, that software cant extract frames so its useless for us. i think it was kmplayer? not sure. like you can download kmplayer on mac but it doesnt have the same features rip.for ts files, i use vlc player (since ps can’t open it) and sit there and capture each and every frame lol. 

Actually Giffing

here’s where things get a bit interpretive

(im assuming you know how to make a gif since you’ve asked for specific things like sharpening and stuff)

for coloring, 

ive found that not changing the lighting too much of the video youre giffing leads to higher quality stuff…but i also hate not changing the lighting too much which is why a lot of my gifs turn out grainy hahah (my coloring is really centered around how to make the person in the gifs look the most ‘natural’? so that usually involves trying to take out video filters). but yea the gifs in which i didnt change too much with coloring, tended to be my most high quality gifs. 

i don’t use other peoples psds and make my own everytime for each gif, and i only usually just adjust ‘curves’ and ‘exposure’ yea.

if there’s an ugly color background that you want to make look more white, when youre in ‘curve’s, go to each color (red green and blue) and drag the little line thing in the top right corner a little to the left. idk what is actually happening there and why it only really addresses the bg but thats a good way to try to make your bg whiter without actually whitewashing the gif. 

for sharpening

lol sharpening, my enemy. its what i struggle with the most

i use .4 at 500% for smart sharpen

and then for topaz i make sure clean color is at 0 first of all, and i mess around with ‘overall strength’ and ‘reduce blur’ until i get the quality that i wanted. i nvr go higher than .07 strength. 

but an important thing for sharpening i think is deciding when you want to crop the picture? do you crop it before or after the sharpening/topaz? i dunno honestly, but for me ive found that cropping first, and then applying sharpening settings leads to the highest quality (or maybe thats what im used to so it turns out better). 

oh yea i dont resize, i crop instead. i’m not sure if that does anything but when i was first starting i found that resizing made my gifs look more blurry…? and that cropping was nicer to my gifs? i’m not sure if that does anything though lol maybe cropping is worse who knows, but its something ive stuck with ever since ive started

save settings

i’ve recently switched over to diffusion! but sometimes that doenst work out so i use the pattern one. i play around with adaptive/selective to see which one looks better or takes up less space haha

last but not least: pray

i spend a lot of my time praying that my gif will come out good haha bc even if you think you did everything right, once you hit that ‘save for web’ button, it’ll look like the ugliest thing in the world it’s really frustrating. like even when i make a gifset from the same video using the same everything (coloring, sharpening, save settings) one gif will look like trash and the other one will be like the best thing ive ever giffed so its like?? pray
