SUMMARY — aventurine does not understand the twist of fate that allows him to stand beside you.

Aventurine isn’t sure how to feel. 

The low hues of noon cast a gentle light upon his gloves, giving light to the sea of shattered stones that lie in his grasp. A sea of dazzling green, torn and fragmented beyond repair.

He’s sure he sees it now, a reflection of the wildly wretched life he’s lived sitting in the palms of his hands. The remnants of the only control he’s managed to retain in his life frail as dust in the winds. SIlent he remains, still as a pound dog that has had its bone ripped away from it. 

It isn’t until he feels the ghost of your hands along his own that Aventurine realizes his heart is racing. You spin him to face you, and his heart lurches at the worry that etches itself upon your features. He fights with narratives in his head that play games of fallacies, yet the scorch of his devotion to you leaves his tongue tied.

Facades are a game that come like second nature to Aventurine, but he swears he will not do to you what he deems business in his schemes. Instead, he pulls at what little honesty remains in the depths of his heart and his breath shutters. 

“Guess I’m back to where I was five years ago.”

The words come out quiet, too soft for his nature and simply small. It’s a confession that makes him wonder how many other pieces of his life will break apart until the whole is severed. There’s a fear that lingers within, bubbling to the surface as he attempts to withdraw from your hold.

Aventurine does not believe that his life holds any meaning with or without the cornerstone. Yet, that title made him seem as if he truly meant something, and without it, what little reign he held over his life disappeared. 

He believes you deserve fire, yet he is no more than an ember flickering on a stoked match. He cannot burn in flames bright enough to keep you.

Silently, he awaits your scold, the reprimand that deems him as worthless as he believes himself to be. A reminder that it was all but a stroke of luck that brought you to him, a trial that has run out as you see him for who he truly is, barren and scared.

His hands shake as you guide them to pour his shattered stone into the box at his feet. Shock etches itself upon his features, and he looks to you with nothing but raw, unparalleled fear as you speak. 

“You will always be the same to me.”

Aventurine does not understand the twist of fate that allows him to stand beside you. Single handedly, you vowed to peer into the wasteland that was his soul, and devoted yourself to his inherently unjust destiny. And, even as his life’s worth is ripped away from him, you love him unchanged.

An insatiable want carves at his soul like a day yearns for night, and Aventurine knows no other place to put his hands but around you in embrace. His hold is tight, as if he imagines that you will fade away if he abandons it. Yet, the weave of your fingers through his hair is enough to tell him that you’re no illusion, a sensation that will cease to disappear as long as he lives.

“Let me see you, Aven.”

Your words flow as lost prayers on the horizon do, and Aventurine retracts his grasp on you, allowing his knees to bring him to the ground. Your hands, gentle as streambeds in the spring, cup his face, running over spilt tears from keeled eyelashes. Instinctively, his hands latch onto your wrists, desperately chasing after your warmth and attempting to sear it into his skin.

Aventurine outwardly sighs as you run your fingers along his jaw, stopping to tuck a stray wisp of hair behind his ear. Although your gaze rocks with the deepest seas of adoration, the child deep within his heart beckons him to gamble with his luck once again. A risk that trails the faint quiver of his lips, as he would utter no such words to any other being in the entire cosmos.

“Will you kiss me?”

Wordlessly, you nod, and Aventurine closes his eyes. The soft touch of your lips quells the troubles that brew within, igniting fire against endless water. His hands fall to his lap, melting in the passion of your touch, and his heart craves to continue beating as if you are the oxygen that fills his lungs. 

He refuses to leave you until there is no air left for him to breathe. Gasping for the vitality of you that runs rampant through his veins, Aventurine tilts his head upward, and your heart flutters at the gentle smile that greets your gaze. Brilliant hues of purple and blue shimmer amidst the night, and his hold on you returns, hands moving to interlock themselves with your own. It’s the same gesture that holds you in the deep of dusk, never waning as lost prayers to the universe whisper behind closed doors. 

The words that follow are never far from you, spinning like soft woven silk that rests in your dreams when he’s away. Your eyes shut as he presses his lips to the corner of your mouth, spreading warmth to your cheeks that subdue the chills of frosted wind. In yearn, you wait, reveling in the soft fan of his breath over your skin.

(to be clear this is an opinion i agree with, even though the writing team hilariously seems to think that the clans are totally great and fine)

Damn you caught me RIGHT before I was about to fall asleep but now I’m awake because I love to think about this and have little opportunity to yap about it.

Disclaimer I haven’t really read a wc book in years, I read them a LOT as a kid and it made a huge impression on me. It’s the fandom I’ve been in the longest and I’ll probably never leave like I fear wc amvs on YouTube irreversibly altered my brain chemistry in a serious way. So that’s where I’m coming from.

This all began when I tried to get back into actually reading warrior cats a few years ago. I started with the manga as a kid so I wanted to pick up the latest one, A Shadow in RiverClan. I’ve also always liked feathertail so it worked out.

Color me shocked when I read the most bold faced fascist apologia I have ever seen in my life. Like it’s SHOCKING as someone who hasn’t read the series since I was like 12 or 14 when I was dumber and less aware of this kind of stuff. I didn’t end up reading anymore wc until the new graphic novels started coming out because of how blatant it all was to me like I was REALLY turned off of the canon material for a while.

In aSiRC feathertail is basically a woman who was almost executed for being mixed race/nationality and the person who allowed this to happen is still in power. Her brother is able to reintegrate with their society but she can’t forget that everyone in her tight knit nation-state cult thing were going to passively allow her and her brother and their mentors to be murdered for their heritage. The moral of this story is to forgive the leader and get over it which! Is fuckin crazy!

But what else can the moral be? Warrior cats at its core is just fundamentally pro-border and lowk anti-miscegenation (lowk. LOWK) and the more you look at it the more insanely fashy it gets.

BloodClan is a bunch of urban gangsters from a foreign place who, despite being impoverished and explicitly allowed to be murdered by clan cats under the warrior code, pose a threat to the Clans and have to be vanquished, essentially.

It just very much gives anti-immigrant nationalist propaganda to me! So truly atp I don’t have any real interest in just like la di da isn’t it fun to be a clan cat stories or ocs or whatever it just makes me kind of uncomfortable! Not in a super serious way I just mean like, I do not get any enjoyment out of it anymore (other than highly headcanoned clangen blogs honestly, shout out splinterclan)

And I’ve never really engaged with the books themselves as much as I have the universe and sparse lore, so I find it way more interesting to really get into the whole Clans as cult idea.

Starclan is always being shady and manipulative and the scope of their powers is super unclear, the society itself values violence and separation both between the clans who really have no reason to be doing all that to each other and “outsiders”, there are all these draconian rules about who can and can’t have babies with whom, there’s an entire class of celibate mystics (who I love to hc as more celibate and more mystic than even in canon), there’s just so much crazy cult shit! Not even to mention the manifest destiny shit in tnp.

I also have been coming at it from a non-white/immigrant/mixed race lens and that’s almost how the very first arc is framed! From an outsider’s pov, and basically I have more fun with Rusty/Firepaw types being like wait! WTF have I gotten myself into!? Or a born clan cat breaking from the cult programming and realizing they would be better off away from this society.

If I keep going I’m just gonna be rambling about ocs so to cap this off, my summary of wc fascism barely scratches the surface of how bad it actually is and this is from a LURKER who doesn’t even read the newer sometimes even fashier books!! I know the series would never do this but I just can’t imagine my little kitty ocs running around happy in the war cult commune. Like, I can’t bring myself to just enjoy Clan structure anymore I have to abolish it. I have to!!!! Anyway. Goodnight!

and okay so. iirc i made a kingdom hearts reference in that post but just mentioned xenoblade in the tags because it's so much less popular/recognizable. but i was originally going to make a reference to xenoblade chronicles 1. i love the whole series and if you like lengthy JRPGs with unique combat and wild stories then you'd probably love it too! but i feel like idia would love XC1 in particular because a major theme of that game's story is that it's about fighting for the freedom to choose your own future. it's about spending your life feeling like you're powerless to change anything, and then allowing yourself to see that that isn't true--that if you keep looking forward and choose not to give up, you can create a world where you can shape your own destiny. you can go the distance. i think it's a story that would really resonate with idia. now, do i think he would see these themes as being applicable to his own life in a realistic way? absolutely not lol, at least not before the events of book 6, but he'd love the fantasy of it. he'd also relate to shulk--the main protagonist of the game--partly for spoilery reasons and partly because shulk is a fucking nerd who resents having to go outside and would rather spend all day in his research lab working with machines. and now i've rambled on about a game you haven't played lol, but if it isn't obvious by now i highly recommend it! and kingdom hearts is my favorite game series of all time so i highly recommend it as well. fun fact: idia's voice actor, kouki uchiyama, also voices roxas in the japanese version of KH!

OFCCC I CAN TALK ABT THE POKÉMON AU i actually wrote it in my notes app so i’ll just type instead of giving screenshots since that’ll end up as a lot 😭

so basically the gist of it is the mc is barou’s younger cousin or sister or smth (rip barou male lead but the familial bond is the main theme of the story so he’s still important) and he disappears to go on a journey when he’s of age and he’s never heard from again!! originally mc doesn’t want to go on a journey but eventually she’s decides she has to in order to find barou ☝🏻 they don’t live close enough to a professor for her to get an actual starter so she takes the sibling of barou’s first pokemon, which is a houndour, so that’s her starter!! she goes through the region in search of barou, collecting badges and meeting the crew (who i will elaborate on in the next paragraph hehe) and catching pokémon/having various misadventures etc etc but eventually they realize an evil team (because is it a pokémon au if there’s no evil team) is after them after originally thinking mc is one of them because of her houndour as they believe the crew is a threat to the team’s goals 😨 it’s eventually revealed when mc breaks into the base that the leader is barou HOWEVER barou is very clearly acting strange and it turns out he actually died right before challenging the champion of the region and the evil team used a ghost pokémon to puppeteer his body so that they could use his team since he basically had the strongest team in the region and would’ve been champion if he didn’t die 😓 the evil team wants to get rid of pokémon training as a system because they believe it takes advantage of the unfortunate (such as nagi) which the mc does agree with but she can’t agree with their methods and especially possessing barou’s corpse 😭 so she and her houndoom kill barou for good which leads barou’s own houndoom to basically kill itself (the rest of his pokémon are inherited by mc and mostly like her because they realize how much she loved barou and how she never stopped looking for him) and this proves aiku’s theory that pokémon do form familial bonds as mc’s houndoom mourns for its brother (also ik i just mentioned nagi and aiku without context but i’ll explain who they are now + their teams and hopefully it’ll make more sense then!!)

so the main group that reader travels with is herself, tullia, otoya, and karasu!! otoya is the descendant of an exiled clan and he’s trying to regain their honor by being a legitimate trainer instead of all sneaky the way his family members were, karasu is the younger brother of the region’s flying-type gym leader (yayoi 🥹) and he ran away from home to prove himself as a trainer in his own right, and tullia is an aspiring pokémon breeder who’s basically training up her own pokémon so people want their offspring?? if that makes sense lol

mc’s team: houndoom [starter], gyarados, aegislash, donphan, galvantula, dragalge

barou’s team: houndoom [starter], pangoro, zoroark, krookodile, sharpedo, weavile

otoya’s team: greninja [starter], ampharos, blissey, sylveon, ninetales, altaria

tullia’s team: infernape, lilligant, vivillon, lanturn, granbull, hitmonchan (all pokémon mentioned to be somehow helpful to people, particularly attractive/used as companions, or, in hitmonchan’s case, having offspring with multiple evolutions [without being basic and just giving her an eevee])

karasu’s team: honchkrow [starter], pidgeot, staraptor, talonflame, garchomp, lucario (he mostly has flying type pokémon because yayoi kept giving him rejected gym pokémon to keep for himself; lucario and garchomp are the only ones he catches himself)

then we have a lot of recurring characters, some who appear more than others (ex nagi has a lot of appearances because he’s my goat whereas hiori and isagi don’t have as many)

yukimiya wants to be a battler like the rest but because of his frail health and eyes he’s forced to be a coordinator and model however he’s actually quite talented at battling so he helps mc in training and move efficiency and whatnot whenever he sees her

nagi had like 0 interest in going on a journey or doing anything difficult but a fire burns his house down and leaves him an orphan and the only way he can get any governmental assistance/literally SURVIVE is by becoming a trainer so that’s what he does

reo is the son of the current champion and he’s training to be a gym leader and eventually possibly replace his father as the champion

team: gallade [starter], mawile, persian, flygon, cinccino, florges

chigiri used to be a very famous rapidash racer but he has a very bad accident and injures his leg to the point that he can’t race anymore so he also has to become a trainer in order to earn money

team: off-the-track rapidash [starter], zebstrika, dragonite, gorebyss, liepard, pyroar

hiori literally just becomes a trainer so his parents leave him alone and he can have some peace and quiet; i’m thinking he appears in some kind of fossil-related side quest hence why he gets a fossil pokémon

team: kingdra [starter], metagross, nidoqueen, luxray, aurorus, swanna

isagi is completing the trials to become an elite four member so he kinda runs into mc and co every now and then?? he seems to have known barou in the past so mc tries to talk to him about it but isagi doesn’t know what happened to barou; or, if he does, he’s elusive about it and refuses to answer mc’s questions

team: charizard, lapras, stoutland, machamp, leafeon, raichu

aiku is in training to be a pokémon professor and is currently doing research for his thesis about whether pokémon are capable of forming familial bonds on the level that humans do or if it’s more instinctive pack-bonding for them

team: aiku doesn’t really have a team per se since he mostly does catch and release for research purposes but he does have an arbok that stays with him permanently and is his partner in crime and rizz

um…anyways…that was a lot as you can see…LMAOAOA idk who the endgame would be in terms of a love interest (probably nagi if we’re being real) because the main focus is honestly mc and barou’s sibling relationship ☝🏻 i also don’t know who tullia would end up if anyone i just wanted another female main-ish character so it’s not just mc with a bunch of boys 😭

okay i was really tired when i wrote my first response (and still am) and what im realizing is that what i was thinking was that it wasnt his system and he didnt have like absurd amounts of power. like where i was at in my understanding was that the destiny thing and the storybook were probably old enough that like. allof the kings and queens believe in it bcuz its like there and its what they believe to be like true and how to protect their stories. and grimm didnt hold insane power because all of those different kingdoms wanted it and thats why they send their kids to eah so he can execute what they want? but by nature of the number of kingdoms and everything thered obviously be a ton of very different political ideas and systems there so i think thats where i got confused? like i think in my head he was like a pawn helping enforce the system and not the leader? and the system was so broad that it would inherently not be like, specific enough? idk how to phrase this right

but like listening to what people are saying and how theyre like bringing in the amount of power grimm has bcuz i lowk hadnt like. thought about it that way. like it makes a lot of sense and i actually agree with that
