Fellas. Spidops is one of the most dissapointing Pokemon of all time.
Paldea has a trio of two stage bug mons. We got Rabsca who is Bug/Psychic, Lokix who is Bug/Dark, and Spidops who is....
Just Bug???? Why not Bug/Fighting? Commit to the Fighting/Psychic/Dark trio for Arceus's sake!

Random Old Pokemon Sprites!
Looking through all my old Pokemon sprite files, MAN is there a lot of random junk that I’d just completely forgotten about. Let’s take a look at some of it!
Tumblr media
This is... I think it was for a contest on The PokeCommunity shortly after the release of Pokemon Black and White. Since those games introduced seasons, the objective of the contest was to create a seasonal variation of an existing Pokemon. I decided to go for a winter Ursaring, fattening it up for hibernation and giving it a winter coat, kind of an extension of the shaggy shoulder fur it already has. Lookit them pinchable cheeks.
Tumblr media
This, uh... I really don’t know what this is. Clearly I wanted to see what Registeel would look like if its outer hull opened, but I guess this is as far as I got before something else came up. No idea where I intended to go with this.
Tumblr media
Oh, this one I do remember. Back then, people frequently came to me for spriting and design advice, and this person had a design for a karakasa (kasa obake? whatever they’re called) Pokemon that they weren’t happy with. I think they wanted it to be more like an actual creature than just an animated umbrella, and what I suggested was making a pattern that looked like a face while its actual face was down below. I might revisit this concept some day...
Tumblr media
This was for another contest, I guess just to make an evolution. Couldn’t tell you why, but I decided to have Chimecho evolve into a Japanese pellet drum. The design isn’t bad overall, but man, that face is really poorly-done...
Tumblr media
Wow, that’s a little freaky. A friend of mine was insisting that there was no way she could never learn to draw pixel art or make anything original, even if she started by editing Pokemon sprites. I forget how it went down, but to try to prove her point she challenged me to make a fakemon using... it looks like Absol’s head, Pikachu’s head, Charizard’s hands, Quagsire’s hands, Mew’s tail, a Magma Grunt’s legs, Meowth’s feet, and I think those are Winona’s feet.
Tumblr media
This is an interesting one. After Black/White’s season mechanic was revealed, someone suggested a snake that changes form and type based on the season, which they creatively called “Snakeason”. Well, Game Freak has done worse, honestly. It looks like I finished winter and spring, and I’m assuming the one on the right is a half-finished autumn form. I'm not sure why they’re so massive.
Tumblr media
Yet another contest! Actually, this was more of a head-to-head competition between me and one other person. I don’t remember who they were, what they drew, or who won... but I was tasked with making something original and unlike any other Pokemon using the parts of Psyduck, Sunflora, and Torchic. I went with some kind of gourd. Looking at it again, I don’t think I won.

I did a lot of sprite work for rom hacks, which mostly entailed me making functional sprite versions (with indexed palettes) of concepts that people made rough sketches of. Remember how in the item menu of FireRed/LeafGreen it would show a sprite of your backpack, with different pockets opening depending on which type of items you’re looking at? Yeah, that’s what this is. As you can see, the sprites were based on concept art provided by the hack’s creator.

This guy (Professor Linden, I want to say?) is from the same rom hack as the bags. I think he was specifically a field researcher, hence the cargo shorts, but I have no idea why he has the giant kooky mustache.
Tumblr media
Finally, one of my favorite sprite edits I’ve ever done... LAVA HIPPO! This was another contest, in which you had to take a Pokemon of your choosing and turn it into a fire-type, while also using gold and burgundy as its primary colors. I think I just scrolled through a list of Pokemon, imagining interesting features that each might have as a fire-type, and when I reached Hippowdon it just clicked.
I might post more of this stuff, if I find anything else that’s interesting. I’m pretty sure most of what’s left in that folder is trainers I made for other peoples’ rom hacks and fan games, and maybe a few very old, cringe-inducingly-bad amalgamations... but who knows, there might be something cool.
