on a more personal note: death grips were and are a pretty major source of inspiration for my own music. not in the sense of "i like this sound so i'm going to ape it," but in the sense of "oh i can get this weird with it if i really want to."

a decent chunk of the music in SLARPG would have been a lot more restrained and self-conscious if it weren't all the death gripses out there. sophie, knower, joanna wang, wednesday campanella, KKB, lemon demon... these artists and countless others helped to show me that it's okay and even extremely cool to get weird with it.

i'm reminded of this comment on one of my tracks in particular:

and look, part of me thinks this is more or less harmless, right? i even pinned it, because it made me chuckle. it's all in good fun! (seriously, don't go causing any trouble over a comment like this. i do not condone that kind of harassment.)

and yet - if i stop to think about it a second longer, i start to ask: what is this kind of joke really saying? "this sucks." "turn that shit off." and... i dunno, that feels bad, you know? i was bouncing in my seat grooving to that track when i was making it. i like what i made. that's why i made it.

every time i make music, i'm making something i want to hear but that doesn't exist yet. i'm incredibly, stupidly lucky that i get to do that, and that other people connect with it. but when the end result of that effort is a "joke" like "this is so weird omg, put something normal on," well...

even as a joke that's enough to make me second guess myself the next time i make music. it's enough to make me change the preview track for the album to something a bit tamer so i don't "scare off" first-time listeners. that feels like capitulating, and capitulating is the opposite of authentic self expression.

i have much, much weirder, more difficult and challenging ideas that i have yet to explore and put out there because i already feel like enough of a pariah just as a trans woman in the world.

i'd like to find the inner courage and esteem to create that art without softening its edges, trying to appease, or apologizing for myself. i think i'll get there. i'm already closer than i used to be. but seeing more people respect weird art, rather than quip about about its strangeness, would be a start. a girl can dream.

Pink Pony Club Episode-911

Thanks to @speaknowbuckley I gained the motivation to finish this plot idea for what I picture for a queer central episode (Gay club, because its LA and I am desperate for ABC to allow us to see that side of the city!)  for 9-1-1!  (Also im back from vacation yay!)

Title: The Pink Pony Club (Please know that its been a Chappell Summer for me truly) 

Main Plot/Episode Dynamic:  

I see this following a bit after Bucks initial coming out as Bi (I initially had this before he actually was confirmed bi so I saw him coming out alone, but I can still see this with the buck/tommy coming out as well!). Takes place during pride month and Hen is watching as Buck is excited for his first pride month as not and ally™. I see her wanting to take Buck out with her and Karen to the bars to celebrate, and of course Chim and Eddie may have overheard and become jealous to join (letting them all come along for support and just fun). Overall its an episode that explore a lot. Buck feeling scared to feel accepted into the queer community finally, that maybe he isn't queer enough (possibly exploring Bi hatred within the community) (for me bi hatred and eraser is something that I would love to see touched upon especially now with how people have been reacting to bi characters becoming a norm) and scared to head out to the bars. But having a Buck and Hen brother sister scene where she convinces him that he should celebrate and love himself. Eventually planning outfits together. I see buck finally letting go as he walks into the first bar. People dancing around without a care, queens, men, women. Standing on the floor and letting the music mute his racing mind, finally letting himself sway to the music with a content happiness. Hen and Karen smiling proudly as they join in.  

Oh but don't think this whole story is just on Buck and Hen. I love a queer Eddie arch and if I was a writer for ABC this would be the first fucking stone cast for this arch. Eddie walking into that bar initially without any worry. He was an ally and doing this for his best friends, no worries there. Why would he be? He’s straight... right? But why as he's watching buck dance with men does he have this pain in his chest. Or seeing other men dance together with such joy and ease. Why as he sips and chats with a drag queen at the bar does he feel the most like he’s at ease and belongs somewhere than ever before? Why does the episode end with Eddie sneaking off back to the very same bar the next night without the rest of the 118 as a soft melody of pink pony club plays, a smile etching across his face as the lights over cast his face (I NNEEEDDD). 

Oh and Chim, having a fucking blast as per usual with Maddie.

Viggo, 1,2 and 5!

"1.- Why do you like or dislike this character?"

Oh boy, where do I even begin... Well, first of all, I'm a sucker for intelligent characters, and he is no exception. I would love to play maces and talons with Viggo, to talk about literally anything, to dissect his mind and every little thought that passes through it. The way he carries himself is also a favourite of mine, dangerous in a way most Vikings aren't used to, feared for his mind games and manipulation rather than his strength, yet the fact that he is still strong and capable enough to stand his ground in a fight is just so good! He is a Viking, and he knows that even if his mind is his greatest tool he must be fit and strong to survive, so he doesn't shy away from fights.

I also love the way his post-volcano story arc was handled. After losing everything he had, his family, his people, his empire, even part of himself with his scarring and blind eye... He was so lost. He had nothing and no one, so it's no wonder he agreed to help Krogan and Johann when they went searching for him. Maybe he thought it would help him get back on his feet, maybe visions of a new empire reassured him and convinced him to get back into that fight. But now he's experienced. He sees things differently, through the lenses of failure and, for the first time, of the one who wasn't in power. I believe having him be just a tool rather than the boss for once really helped Viggo realize what they were doing was maaaybe not the best. After being just another victim of his own plans, I feel like he saw all those sacrifices and losses as more than numbers on paper or minor setbacks. And of course, once he gets trapped in the cave with the monstrous nightmare, he finally sees to reason. I wish we could have had more of good guy Viggo, I really really do; getting to see him explore this new side of himself, making new allies, maybe seeing first-hand just how much pain he had caused and learning to live with the consequences of it all... But, at the same time, I adore his ruthlessness, his desire to win the sick game he played with the riders, and the lengths he was willing to go to just for a victory, like in the episode of the Buffalord. He has a goal and he is not scared to put everything in the line to get it.

And last but not least, I love his emotions. He knows people and their feelings, he predicts them in order to play and toy with them, and while he is usually calm and serene even in moments of crisis, while he knows how to get a hold of his emotions way better than say, Dagur or Ryker, he also loses it sometimes, and I love when that happens. Throwing tantrums when things don't go his way, yelling at Ryker and Dagur in that one scene (forgot what ep it is but early ones) and basically telling them they are nothing but tools to him, the raw emotion on his face when he was about to fall into the volcano and called for Hiccup... It's just, mwuah. I love when he loses his shit, be it in anger, sorrow, fear, anything. I love catching a glimpse of the turmoil inside him and having him break that perfect, suave and intimidating vision of a man he projects onto others.

I probably forgot something but this is enough rambling for the guy. (Btw didn't mention his looks and voice but those are a given I absolutely love them both)

"2.- Favourite canon thing about this character?"

Not a big surprise to say his intelligence. That on its own is amazing, but paired with his cocky attitude? Excellent. He is a smart bitch and he knows it. He will beat you at any strategy game you play against him. He knows so much shit and I wish to hear his perfect voice tell me absolutely everything inside that brilliant mind of his. "5.- What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?"

Probably a bit corny, but "for the dancing and the dreaming" has to be it. I'm not too good at assigning characters songs or music since my music taste is... Something for sure, so "for the dancing and the dreaming" is one of the few I do think about when Viggo shows up; even more so now that my friend drew my oc and him dancing to the song in the style of Race to the edge ending (pic in my banner)! It makes me think of a redeemed Viggo, someone who sees love not as a tool to control others but as a reason to live. A Viggo who hasn't quite forgiven himself for his crimes, but is willing to keep moving forward. A once evil, powerful, and greedy man who now only wishes for peace and to remain by his loved one's side.

Be it Hiccup, his skrill, or someone's OC, I don't care, but I love seeing post-redemption Viggo feel love for someone and treasure it, and this song always makes me think of this.

okay so like. There is an AU I have had for such a long time, its basically what if the contestants were not made by mephone and had families and shit and an excuse to explore taco's possible childhood. It was made before the revelation but I still love to think about it. This own idea of what taco childhood is like, is connected to my amphibia AU. Which is just taco lightbulb and suitcase knew each other before the competition, but lightbulb just like marcy scared to be separated from her only friends gets them trapped into another dimension with the help of a music box. For simplicity's sake its the amphibia dimension first and they go through most of amphibia events (taco instead of finding grime however finds some rogue shimmer that just becomes her friend and is basically grime as a shimmer lmao) until the episode true colors where they all ''go back home'' but they don't, they get stranded into the inanimate insanity dimension and this time they cannot find each other this time and they somehow have to live with the thought their friends are missing or at least death. So, basically. When the competition arises they do not recognize each other, suitcase was not on season 1 but lightbulb was, she doesn't recognize taco. The same way taco doesn't recognize suitcase nor lightbulb, she may find there is something familiar about them but that's about it. now getting to taco's childhood in the AU:

AMPHIBIA MENTION NEURON ACTIVATION!!! hehe, I was really into amphibia during season 3- I had a whole other sideblog for it actually!!

Anyways, onto Taco!!! Thinking about the character's outside lives and childhoods is a fun thought exercise, even if they don't actually have them! I can see Taco having had a pretty rough time, yeah? I've seen one idea that she was in a gang, which I find quite funny to think about.

Those poor girls getting DOUBLE isekai'd (μ_μ)!!!! Did their memories get muddled by some exterior force, or did they just spend a very very long time apart? Anyways. I can see Taco as a youngest child, yeah, and her having had a strong bond with her Dad is sweet!! Even if he's an alcoholic and becomes too busy for her... And a Mother with high high expectations that wear her mental health down overtime? Taco is a very smart cookie, and this would align with a lot of her behaviors. Her starting her acting here is so sad :( My sweet angel who acts so much she has no idea how to be herself. Suitcase and Lightbulb would be such good friends I wish we could have seen them interact more!!! And adding Taco into the mix makes it so nice!!! They would be an good friend group I think.

Parents doing their best that still end up failing their children </3!!!!!!! Oughhhh ouch ouchie I love this trope!!!!! And them staying together for the kids even though that hurts the kids!!

Just Dancers and their favourite Efteling attraction + fairytale!

I stand behind my choices and am not afraid to go into heavy detail (and I will for some of them). Everything’s below the cut :)

This is going to confuse so many of you but being very real with you: I don't care. This is me mixing my special intrest with my current hyperfixation and you cannot stop me.

Wanderlust

The attraction I chose for Wanderlust is called Symbolica. It’s a dark ride that takes you on a tour through the Palace of the world of wonders aka Symbolica. I feel like he really enjoys this ride simply because of the whimsy of it. It’s an exploration through all different kinds of rooms (from a garden with a huge whale to a ballroom with all different types of dancers). It just feels right up his alley. He would 100% pick the music tour (and get into an argument with Jack in line why the music tour is better than the treasure tour). They always end up going for Wander’s choice though.

The fairytale I picked for Wanderlust is the Indian Water Lillies. I picked this fairytale for its story! I feel like it’s something he would really enjoy. If you don’t know it here’s a little summary: The stats dance on the water at night, and return to the sky before the first light of day. One day the stars refuse to come back through. The sun rises and a witch curses the stars. Now they’re water lillies during the day and dance as girls during the night.

Sara

The attraction I chose for Sara is called Dreamflight. It’s also a dark ride but it takes you through the world of fae and trolls. I feel like Sara would be a big fan of the fairies and maybe even have a plush of one of them. She always buys the pictures of her and the others whenever they go.

The fairytale I chose for Sara is Rapunzel (Raponsje). Although this version follows the original source of Rapunzel much closer, I think we all know the premise of it. I feel like it would be her favourite fairytale, why? Purely vibes. She does compare Jack to Rapunzel every chance she gets just to mess with him.

Brezziana

The attraction I chose for Brezziana is called Joris and the Dragon. It’s a roller coaster based on the story of Joris and the Dragon. I chose a roller coaster for Brezziana because I feel like she would enjoy roller coaster’s more than dark rides because of the thrill. The story doesn’t really influence why I chose this ride for Brezz. I feel like she would be more interested in the racing aspect of the ride. She would definitely challenge her friends to races if they were in the park on a quiet day. Brezziana is 100% a water side girlie (and good on her because water always wins). I feel like she would also really like the theming for this ride.

The fairytale I chose for Brezziana is Snow white. A true classic really. Don’t think I need to tell you the story of this one either. Brezziana really does strike me as a princess enjoyer, so thats mainly why I went for Snow White. A simple classic that no one can blame her for.

Mihaly

The attraction I chose for Mihaly is called Fata Morgana. It’s a dark ride that takes you on an adventure through the stories of the 1001 Nights (in a boat). I feel like they really like this ride because it’s often seen as a way to relax in the middle of a busy day or at the end of the day. I also think that they like it for all the different scenes you see throughout. Although they used to be really scared of the giant that you encounter near the end of the side as a child.

The fairytale I chose for Mihaly is called Frau Holle. I picked this fairytale because I feel like they would really agree with the message behind it. If you don’t know the fairytale it basically tells the story of a very hard working girl. One day this girl falls down a well while doing chores. In this well she gets transported to another dimension. In this dimension she does chores for Frau Holle. When she goes back to the human world she is rewarded with loads of gold. Her spoiled step sister throws herself down the well in search of gold, but once she comes back she’s covered in soot because she didn’t work hard enough. I feel like Mihaly would really agree with the idea that you get rewarded for the hard work that you do. Also Frau Holle is just iconic and we love her.

Jack Rose

The attraction that I chose for Jack is called the Flying Dutchman. It’s a roller coaster that is based on the legend of the Flying Dutchman. He likes it because of the theming and music. Thats all really, no other reason (looks at Night Swan who doesn’t like this one bc theres a tiny possibility that you can get wet and she doesn’t want to ruin her perfect outfit). No but in all honesty: he’s right. This is the best one.

The fairytale I chose for Jack is called the Red Shoes. It’s a fairytale about a poor orphan girl who gets adopted by this old lady. The old lady gives her a pair of red shoes that she can dance in. Eventually the old lady falls ill, but instead of caring for the lady the girl goes to a ball. As a sort of moment of instant karma the girl gets cursed and now she has to dance in those shoes forever. Seems decently innocent right? Nope. It ends with a lumberjack cutting off the girls feet. The shoes continue to dace, even without the girl. Feels right up Jack’s alley ngl. I feel like he talks about liking it really innocently too, and when people read the story they’re just kind of horrified. (It was between this one and the little match girl so)

Night Swan

The attraction I chose for Night Swan is called Villa Volta. Its a mad house type of attraction where like the entire room spins (or at least thats the illusion that is created). Basically the house got cursed and only someone with a soul as pure as a new born baby can list the curse. Just feels like her type of thing. Also she heavily vibes with the music.

The fairytale I chose for Night Swan is called the Chinese Nightingale. Although this is a very ironic fairytale for her to like (basically a ruler with a god complex finds out that they’re truly not as great as they thought they were), I feel like she would because it made Jack cry as a kid. Thats all, that amused her enough.

before I sleep, here is my definitive ranking on all the NPMD songs and some rambles on why I placed them there - also the ranking is based on how much I vibe with them (music production and lyricism have different rankings)

1. Hatchet Town (aka the hatchetfield trilogy theme song like this tune perfectly encapsulates the chaos Hatchetfield has to go through with every Starkid project pos-2018 and I love it - kinda wish it was a number that is more integrated with the plot with the kids tho BUT I REALLY DID LIKE that this melody was quite prominent in the other songs too)

2. High School is Killing Me (I've watched many teen centered musicals and believe me when I say that this song is one of, if not, the best introduction numbers out there for this genre - also it's a really great opening hook for a show)

3. Nerdy Prudes Must Die (FUCKING AMAZING HONESTLY - amazing way to REALLY re-establish a villain back from the dead and to establish the main theme for the nerds here: "I'm Not A Loser" (tho i fucking wish that motif was used a bit more))

4. Just For Once (everyone cheer for Lauren Lopez flexing not just her high tier soprano skills, but also how amazing of a fucking actor she can be like the concept of this song is quite layered and to pull it off both comedically and emphatically takes great lyrical and acting prowess)

5. The Summoning (a well-anticipated onstage introduction to all 5 of the LiB that balances out befuddling neon-entertainment with genuine fucking menace)

7. Cool As I Think I Am Reprise (A FUCKING GENIUS REPRISE I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW COOL I FIND THEM RECONTEXTUALIZING THE OG SONG AND IF I LOVED YOU TO FIT THE SITUATION AND BOTH OF THE CHARACTERS GROWTH. LIKE IN TERMS OF THEMATIC IMPLICATIONS WITH CHARQCTER DEVELOPMENT, THIS SONG AND ITS SCENE WOULD BE THE TOP)

6. If I Loved You (I think this song could be a bit more honestly like I know how much Starkid has explored Steph and Pete's relationship in their other projects and I was really hoping that they would have it more portrayed here - however the song is a bop nonetheless and it matches neatly with their themes and the harmonies are top tier. I placed this higher than the next just due to my personal bias like I really do like the song)

8. Dirty Dudes Must Die (A GREAT TWIST THAT MAKES ME WANT ANOTHER MUSICAL ABOUT GRACE CHASITY'S DERANGED SELF - also the new context of the song Grace is reprising here makes her a villain even scarier than MAX of all people but that's just me)

9. Literal Monster (A very catchy beat and well structured song that provides a good introduction to a jock-bully with the god complex. also kinda foreshadowing to nerdy prudes must die)

10. Cool As I Think I Am (the instrumentation reminded me of Dear Evan Hansen ngl fjsjd but it really does sound like an I-Want song from a teen-musical which is of course what they are going for - it sounds very nice and earnest though and I loved how it was utilised in the reprise. However I still fucking wish that the I'm Not A Loser motif was used more)

11. Dirty Girl (look I'm sorry for ranking this quite low on the list but like there is no fucking way I'm using this as bait to lure other people in like they'd be scared away I'm sorry fjdjs BUT I love how Will and Angela perform this though like top tier starkid performances ever - its not just what I would listen to on repeat personally jgjdjs)

12. Go Go Nighthawks! (This one gets plus points because of FUCK YOU CLIVESDALE GO GET FUCKED. otherwise its nice and cheery and perfectly shows how happy everyone is without Max but um I kinda wish it could be a bit more especially in terms of showing how happy the other nerds are now that Max is gone but that's just me)

13. Bully The Bully + Bury The Bully (Look I couldn't decide which was better like they both are the same melodies so like gjxjs these two are cute though and I liked seeing the 5 kids bonding in Bully The Bully since we don't get that many scenes with them)

14. The Best Of You (the pop-punk happy number is a staple of teen-centered musicals and it does really sound nice - just isn't that much of a standout compared to the others.)

9:18 AM okay I have been vomiting for the last fifteen minutes, ever since I woke up it wasn't anything to do with last night, I'm quite used to the smells and tastes of our sex it might be something I ate? what did I eat yesterday. hotel food. it tasted fine? maybe I should eat from somewhere else today, play it safe. donnie's worried about me. thank you, cutie. 9:20 AM she's wrapped me up in the covers and told me to rest today. she can take the journal again.

9:21 AM she doesn't want the journal. but fentzy's awake, and bones too, and they're all going out for their exploration stuff. so. it's just you and me today, journal.

9:28 AM sighhh. I mean. y'know. I do realize how this looks. how I looked yesterday. maybe I don't know what's going on. maybe I'm nervous to be around these friends? bones is one thing, I had been hoping to run into bones. and there was a time when I was trying to find fentzy, but then I gave that up. there was a time when. "when?" there was a time when I had a crush on fentzy. when we were AIM friends, and here was this girl my age, into the same video games and a lot of the same music as me, this openly dominant girl who.. returned my flirts, and still listened to me talk about my life, and cared about what I was going through, and told me what she was going through, and. we got close. we became really good friends. do you realize how badly I wanted to meet her? do you realize that I became her online friend on the day before my family moved back to england? do you realize what that did to me? to think that the kind of girl I had dreamed about did exist, and that I'd even meet her, that she'd want to be my friend, and want to talk openly about sexual interests... but that I couldn't even meet her in person? she was just another part of the past for me, the past I had to leave behind. There were fortune-tellers, tattoo artists, a zombie freak show (featuring chained zombies who had died in many different ways), strength challenges, carousel, ferris wheel, a mirror maze… I told them I wanted to see the mirror maze. That, however I'm feeling, I'd rather die than pass up a good maze. Bones says he'll take me later on, take me to the blacksmith on the way. So I'd better bring my sword.

2:38 PM So! Uh. Hi everyone! bones "So this is Paper Mario. This is one of those games that you really like, isn't it?" Yeah! I didn't actually get to this one until after Super Paper Mario came out, when I was old enough to want to start buying N64 games I'd missed. I also got the first two Mario Party games. It's an easy RPG. Hard enough for me, I mean. I never even beat Earthbound. fentzy "I love Paper Mario." Yeah. :) I'm on chapter 5 now, though, which isn't my favorite? You go to this island with all the Yoshis on it. fentzy "I love Yoshis." Yeah! :D But I don't really love this tropical island setting. The enemies are harder, there's a lot of fetch quests... which is weird, I guess, because chapter 4 is like my favorite, and that one's nothing but fetch quests, but it's also all Shy Guys, and I find those guys so damn interesting. They have a whole, like, military structure, but the characters themselves are all about mystery. But, like! I played Paper Mario more out of historical interest, as first I played The Thousand Year Door, and that game blew me away, from start to finish it is all compelling setpieces and charming characters, it is one of the least "Mario"-like Mario games. Whereas this N64 original is... definitely a Mario game, just one that's starting to get playful with the source material. Like!

(Jordan spends, uh, half an hour talking about Paper Mario, then for another half-hour he and Fentzy talk about Sonic. Bones and Donnie listen, politely nodding.)

Other M was definitely experimental for the series, most of the games do not go that in-depth with the plot. fentzy "I wish Danny was here. He'd have gotten a kick out of all this." bones "God, you AIM guys and your video games." fentzy "Don't you like Elder Scrolls and Fallout and stuff?" bones "And STALKER, and Deus Ex." she punched his arm "Then you're a dork too." What about you, Donnie? What games did you play? "Oh god. Um. Nothing as exciting as all that." fentzy "What? What did you play?" donnie "Harvest.. Moon? The Sims? Some Rollercoaster Tycoon... but I watched a lot of game review things on the internet as I got older, so I'm aware of all these names." bones "Sounds like you're a PC gamer. Oh, it's. ...well, it's maybe kinda embarrassing, but when my family first moved to England, I'd actually, like, imagine you were with me, and I wrote these little short stories about the things we'd get up to. "..I missed you too, man." I didn't want to leave America. "I know." I didn't even make any new friends. We never stayed in one place for long enough for me to get used to the area and.. meet anyone. Not that I was any good at that in the first place. Didn't you and I meet out of pretty much a fluke? "You and I were the only ones wearing trilbies at band camp." Yeah. It's shallow of me, but, that's what it took to get me to want to chat. "But we're here now. Through the luck of the apocalypse, we're back at it again." That's true. :)

6:32 PM "So I hear something about you and Donnie beating the Ciphers?" Yeah! We beat three of them. Do you know about them? "Only that they're big fuckers. Load-bearing, too. Someone had to beat them." You go in the rabbit holes too. Into Xanadu. o: Do you spend much time there? "Sometimes I prefer it there. I found a salt flat where the sun is bright but the wind keeps it temperate, and a village survives on rainwater, which is plentiful. I stayed there for about a week in June. I still miss it." What were the people? In this village? "Kite-shaped, furry. Spoke English." There's a lot of English out there, I've noticed. "Yeah... it bothers me." I don't really think about it too much.

6:40 PM Marty's Smithy. A big garage with a chimney for the furnace. "Isn't this cool? It's not every day you run into a genuine smithy." I saw one just two days ago, actually. It... uh, never mind. Yeah. This is cool. And you must be Marty, in the rubber apron! handshake "Nice to meet you. Are you the kid with the sword?" I sure am!

6:41 PM "Oh wow, the make of this thing... where did you find it?" A place called Castle True. It's.. far from here. "They sure knew how to make their swords sharp." bones "Can you improve it, though?" "Improve it? No, I don't think so. It's of a fragile material that won't take much refinement before it breaks. But I think I can learn from it, make some swords like it with stronger material. If you'd be willing to give me this, that is." Uh. Like, forever? ..bones is nodding at me. S...sure. Sure. Take the sword. c:

6:45 PM Left the smithy and are on our way to the carnival now. I am swordless. Bones is assuring me that this is a good idea. It doesn't look like we'll be leaving Dominiere just yet anyway, so we'll still be here when the sword's ready. I won't be totally defenseless. Now where's that damn maze? :D

7:03 PM The Caval-Arcade is the name of the carnival. It's set up across a parking lot, the boundaries marked by parked trucks. ...hey Bones, you coming? "Yeah. Uh, yeah. You go on ahead, check out the maze, I'll be... right with you." He's looking at the trucks. ...I mean, okay!

7:04 PM Much of the attractions are closed for the day, but the maze is open until 9. A man in a fancy mustache, tailcoat, and Mickey Mouse pants is waving me in with a cane. "You look like a man who appreciates the fine art of getting lost! Care for an audience... with your own mind? Then come, step inside the Sky's Neighborhood. Find the exit, and you'll get a raffle ticket!" Eh, I don't need a raffle ticket, but I'll gladly do your maze. owo "Atta boy! Step inside, and whatever you do... don't look down."

7:05 PM Mirrors. Halls of mirrors. Seeing myself clearly in here; though my form does warp, it's always in obvious ways. I know how mirrors work. Eek, the bags under my eyes. i can't really... think of any? there are words i like but i wouldn't say i hoot and holler if i see a chance to use them, or see them crop up in someone else's work. themes and ideas, yeah! specific words... idk.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

i've been doing a lot of probably entirely unnecessary research for my latest WIP which is... hm! how about i dm you about that one.

on the subject of research, i'm under no illusions, catabolic seed is sheer scifi nonsense (affectionate). i've purposefully held off from getting too in the weeds with it because i know i would stress too much about complex worldbuilding and scientific accuracy, so a lot of stuff that isn't directly relevant to the plot is broad strokes stuff. as per the main inspiration, wolf 359, i'm leaning more on the workplace comedy at the start (because, haha, i have a job, he just like me fr) but i may develop the sci fi elements more once its time to fully bring them into the story. what i do have is: detailed bios and job descriptions for each character, a rough layout of the spaceship Hemera, notes on robotics and spacefaring technology, rival factions within the worldspace, some alien biology stuff... i'm a pretty big science nerd, and i enjoy good hard sci fi! but we're not doing that here, we're putting guys in situations. this is about genre. verisimilitude. you're getting good old fashioned technobabble.

alright, how about this part from ch1 of catabolic seed! i made some pretty big last minute changes to the beginning of the fic because the pacing wasn't working, and i ended up pulling in a scene from much later in the story to serve as a dirkjake meet cute.

i like set up. establishing tone, creating atmosphere... the way you introduce a character, even one known already to the audience, is something i think is important and i enjoy playing with that a lot. originally jane was present and dirk was going to be pulling a bunch of wires out of the wall, which jane described as 'disemboweling her spaceship' but at some point i decided him popping out of the vent and scaring the shit out of jake seemed like a more fun idea so i ran with it. this establishses dirk as a potential threat, which leads to the stupid kabedon moment later, which leads to the jokes about the disney cruise liner and the engineering section flooding... i didn't have time to think it through all the way but as far as choices made on the fly go i think i made it work!

dirk being in the vents was also pulling from wolf 359, specifically referencing the character captain minkowski who i felt was kind of comprable to dirk in terms of her neuroses - it wasn't till i got someone else's eyes on it that they pointed out that i'd introduced dirk exactly like a fucking xenomorph, which was perfect, so i scrambled to insert a textual reference to the alien movies and doing some hasty worldbuilding while i was at it.

in general i think exploring the relationship from jake's point of view is super interesting. in an au where they don't already know each other, dirk is an interesting figure for jake to 'figure out' - aloof, mysterious, other - classic love interest stuff. which is perhaps less interesting than their deal in canon, but hey, i'm having fun running with it.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

hm, i don't know. i hyperfixated on the alpha kids pretty hard so i think i already have quite well-formed interpretations of their personalities and perspectives, it's not hard to dredge those up when i need them. i won't pretend my writing is for sure an accurate reflection of canon characterisation or anything but i'll go read passages from canon when writing and refining dialogue especially. and hmm. i do end up going to dark places sometimes, and nearly every fic ends up quite a bit darker than i mean it to... i'm totally fine. don't worry about it.

aside from my aforementioned interests in genre fiction, or biology, i can see what i'm grappling with as a person reflected quite clearly in what i end up exploring in my work. i have the past experiences of being a queer teenager who had no idea what was going on, grappling with mental illness and feeling incredibly alone. or i can draw on my experiences as an adult, finding myself as a person, going out into the world, and all the struggles therein.

Introduction to All Hallows

So then.

Theme parks and Halloween. Halloween and theme parks.

Most of your big-name American parks do something interesting for Halloween, and it’s no wonder. In the US, this holiday is second only to Christmas in terms of popularity and theme-ability (and if the Millennials and Zoomers have their way, may just eclipse it soon…get on that, kids). What’s more, every park can find a Halloween vibe that suits its brand. Universal Studios, the outfit that basically invented horror movies, goes all-out on the grotesque with roaming hordes of ghoulish, chainsaw-wielding “scare-acters,” indoor mazes filled with horrific imagery and jump-scares, and an extra-frightening version of the tram tour. Disney, by contrast, goes family-friendly with smiling jack-o-lanterns, special parades and fireworks, and evening events featuring trick-or-treat stations and dance floors. Almost any park might toss in some zombified character performers, fog machines, and creepy music for its after-dark Halloween events.

And that’s not even counting the temporary Halloween attractions that spring up every fall like mushrooms after a light rain, and vanish just as quickly once November rolls around.

I’ve explored several types—not all of them, but enough to make an informed opinion—and that opinion is that none of them really reflects my feelings about Halloween. This is largely because that very expectation of brand-appropriateness means that only a small part of the full spectrum of moods and concepts represented by the holiday will be showcased. Halloween is complicated, man. The most obvious comparison is, again, with Christmas, and I think there's a pretty strong consensus as to what that holiday is about—the disagreements, when they arise, tend to revolve around not what Christmas means, but whether the things it means are good.

But Halloween has layers. It has textures. It's bound to, given its history as a pop culture-infused spooky extravaganza slathered on top of a romp day for children that grew out of an expression of neighborly mischief based on a Victorian celebration of mysticism and superstition harking back to a Catholic feast honoring the saints cribbed from a Celtic end-of-year harvest/ancestor worship festival. There are a lot of different tones and motifs associated with Halloween, and they're all equally valid.

What is Halloween about, when you get right down to it? Which aspect of this uniquely multifaceted holiday reigns supreme?

Costumes, free candy, and children roaming the neighborhood after dark?

The harvest season, with pumpkins and cornstalks and spiced apple cider to sip while enjoying a hayride in the country?

Witches and goblins and banshees and other beings from fantasy and folklore lurking in the forest at midnight?

Moldering graveyards, haunted castles, marauding vampires and unfriendly villages where every door is bolted and every shutter drawn promptly at sundown?

Horror movies, bloody murder, zombies at the mall and stalkers in the bushes?

All of these and more?

I have to pick the last option, and that's why I think Halloween, as a concept, could support an entire full-sized theme park, and not just during the fall but year-round. Christmas theme parks of various scales and scopes have enjoyed year-round success in the past, and while their heyday has passed by now…well, see my above point about Halloween gradually catching up with and even surpassing Christmas in popularity. Fans of Halloween seem much more tolerant of the “creep” phenomenon where it gradually gets promoted earlier and earlier in the year, than fans of Christmas. Additionally, Halloween crosses over almost seamlessly with a number of genres of fiction, including horror, thriller, and urban fantasy, all of which are evergreen in and of themselves.

If nothing else, the Goths would love it.

7 : Favorite music genre?

They didn't exactly have music to listen to? They first appeared centuries ago (the Black Arms canonically existed before Tikal, so yeah, physically, THEY'VE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE,) and even then, they were pretty much trapped in this area of land. If they were alive now, though? I have a few ideas. Erebus would 100% listen to Evanescence lmao that's just his vibe. I could see both Orpheus and Lorcan being into rap too. Heavy metal for Ragnar (he really shouldn't.) Not too sure about Akmad and Kieran

12 : Are they good with Chao, Wisp, or any other sort of creature?

I think it would be silly if they had run into some Chao a few times over. Obviously, they're all curious and want to know more about it. Akmad wouldn't be too good with chao, I think. WHY does it keep running off? WHY isn't it doing what he tells it? Ragnar wouldn't be very good with them either, he'd get frustrated too easily. I think the ones who would be best with chao are Kieran and Erebus. Orpehus and Lorcan would do fine, but they'd probably end up scaring the chao away at some point.

20 : What are their hobbies?

Akmad : He's mostly training his abilities, making sure his brothers uphold the Supreme's Will as well. But he's also rather studious, wanting to learn more about just about anything he discovers. Sort of contradicting with his beliefs of the Supreme and all this simply being "destiny," but you know. That's him.

Erebus : He mostly just lurks around, watching and listening in silence (he has a reputation to uphold 😤) but he also has times where he actually enjoys his powers of foresight. If he's feeling particularly mischievous one day, he could even tell a silly little lie or two and watch the chaos unfold. He also just examines things for hours if he finds them interesting?? Its like he's unblinking, even. It creeps his brothers out sometimes.

Orpheus : Punching rock solid walls to try and break them. But also sneaking up on his brothers and starting play fights. He also likes to draw little pictures with a stick in the dirt or sand or whatever's around. Not to brag, but he's quite the artist (stickfigures)

Ragnar : He loves his fiery abilities. Using them for everything IS his hobby. Ah yes, you're cold? Here I can set you on fire maybe. Oh wow that thing looks pretty explosive now that I think about it. Aren't I so cool? With my awesome fire powers? Yes, yes I am. (He also has a notoriously terrible temper)

Lorcan : Playing pranks. That's his most favorite hobby. Making mischief, causing chaos, it doesn't matter just so long as he can cause problems on purpose. He also likes to just wander around, though, exploring this strange land they were just put on one day. He and Doleon specifically do that a lot.

Kieran : Kieran spends a lot of time trying to figure out his own abilities. Everyone else has one, so he must too, right? It never works, though. Sometimes he gets a few small sparks of something purple, but nothing much. That's really something he wants to get better at. But when he's not doing that, he's taking mental notes on everything around him! (Mainly because Doleon has dragged him to INSANE PLACES on this land and he needs some way to mentally recover from the horrors /hj)

Higa family is composed of three members, Hiromi, the son, Hiroki, his father, and Hitomi, his mother. The parents live in a traditional Okinawan house, while Hiromi lives in a small apartment located more towards the center of city.

Hiromi is son of Hiroki and Hitomi Higa. He works in a flower shop full time and as a good flower lover is a fan of outdoors, loves to go for walks and explore new routes to find species of flowers that doesn't know, which he photographs and keeps in a diary.

He's a romantic and dreams of the perfect date, that date with the special person, which surely is not going to be the manager… or at least not the one at the flower shop…. He's a very nice and sweet person when is on his job and wherever he goes everyone who knows him in the store welcomes him with open arms. Being in a flower shop facing public, is very observant and knows very well the people who come there. In the future he would like to make a barbecue for his friends since is an expert in making that kind of food.

He's a very careful prankster but only does it to people he trusts a lot and the ones he frequents in Crazy Rock. Sometimes his pranks are a bit noisy because he likes to scare people with firecrackers (especially in Crazy Rock).

From a very young age he knows how to clean house very quickly, his mother taught him to keep his own place clean, although sometimes due to lack of time he leaves it as it is…

Whenever he can goes to the gym and does weights and boxing, that's why he has such developed muscles, based on doing sports, and the one he loves the most is skateboarding.

He also likes video games, especially those that have to do with flowers and rock music. And although likes rock music, he isn't a great lover of Jazz. He has private moments of relaxation either painting, or being in the garden.

In S he's known as Shadow, an arrogant, conceited and foul-mouthed guy, the opposite of Hiromi who is a kind, polite and responsible boy. We could say that he himself is the Yin and Yang. At night he's dark and "evil" and during the day he's "transparent" and very good, (although sometimes he gets on the guys' nerves). Being Shadow he can throw firecrackers at everyone and say bad-sounding words to men and women alike, even picking on children, as he calls himself the anti-hero. Its special attack is Gladiolus Laser.

When he had a skateboarding confrontation with Reki, he beat him and because of that victory Reki broke his arm. When he beat him Shadow burned his skateboard, feeling neither remorse nor sadness for him. We can say that although Shadow and Hiromi are the same person, they look like two sides of the same coin.

Although as it can see Shadow is how he would really like to be as Hiromi, but hiding and avoiding it because of society's "fault", since it isn't well seen that an adult skateboarding and go dressed as they want, much less with lack of education and respect for others to feel angry. Following unwritten rules of conduct for adults: 17 is the prime of life, have as much fun as you can, because when adulthood comes all kinds of fun should be suppressed and distanced to focus only on the obligations of life, including work and family *. A rule that isn't wrong at all, if it isn't obligatory and an individual chooses it by choice.

Hitomi is Hiroki's wife and Hiromi's mother. She's a somewhat melancholic woman, when Hiromi was little, she was about to lose her husband, luckily everything went well and Hiromi's father was able to see him grow up, but she still thinks about what happened and always tries to make her husband eat healthy food, which he doesn't like very much.

She's a born sportswoman, when was pregnant with Hiromi, used to run on the treadmill non-stop, and now she goes to the gym to keep fit. As she says, age is no impediment to doing sports.

She's a great friend of her friends and whenever she can goes to the gym with them or goes shopping.

Hitomi loves animals and is trying to convince her husband to adopt a cat or a dog, now that Hiromi has moved into an apartment.

She likes DJ music very much, listens to it the most at home and when she goes to gym wears her headphones listening to that style of music. She once played the piano and liked it so much that in the near future would like to take free lessons.

The decorations Hitomi likes are simple and natural courtyard decorations with lots of greenery. In such decorations orange is her least favorite color in large quantities.

Since childhood he has been very paranoid, has always thought that people talk about him, but in spite of everything he has always kept it to himself. He's a great lover of art, likes to go to museums and likes to learn everything that catches his attention.

The music he likes the most is electronic music, likes to listen to it while watching art or fishing, two of his favorite hobbies.

The only decoration he wouldn't like in his house is the island, as well as the color red, he says it would be too strong as a wall color.

I am once again asking for an all-new new top-down Zelda adventure.

I am as psyched as anybody for Tears of the Kingdom, so I hope everyone who is playing is having an awesome time today! Happy release day!

....I didn't pre-order it, mind you — because I'm intimidated by it. I'm scared that once I start playing it, I won't be able to STOP playing it for months. So I'm going to hold off until at least after I complete next month's Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. Personal priorities, I guess.

With that said: I want to talk about how nothing feels quite like exploring one of the top-down Zelda games. There's something so very gratifying about those titles that can't be replicated. Finding every single nook and cranny and object. The dungeons regularly reach heights that're so much more elaborate and complicated than they ever managed to be in 3D. You think the water temple in Ocarina of Time was hard? Talk to me after you finish the water temple in Oracle of Ages. It gets legitimately MIND-BENDING.

If you haven't been here, you are not ready.

Those 6.5 titles — The original TLoZ included, but I'm primarily thinking about A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, The Minish Cap, and to a lesser extent, A Link Between Worlds — have a charm that I've just never seen successfully replicated. YES, I know we get "Zeldalikes" such as Ittle Dew, Hazelnut Bastille, Reverie, and Mina the Hollower, but let's be real here — "-like" games never quite scratch the itch, do they? We're pining for those characters, those worlds, that EXACT feel. We're not pining to play "voxel guy from 3D Dot Game Heroes." We're pining to play a game as fucking Link and hear those classic music cues You feel me?

(And no, the top-down DS games absolutely did not scratch that itch. Sadly, neither did Cadence of Hyrule, because I deeply and brutally SUCK at Crypt of the Necrodancer. At least Cadence looked neat... feh.)

This DID help, at least. It wasn't 'new', but... it really felt goddamn good. Link's Awakening is an ALL-TIMER.

I would pay Nintendo a ton of money to just... take the Link's Awakening remake engine and make a new friggin' 2D top-down Zelda. I'd pay like $200 for that goddamn game, and I know that sounds insane, but I am HUNGRY. Or, frankly? I'd pay just as much for a version in a retro pixel style. That'd make it take far less resources and effort, right? You could make something with a comparatively far smaller staff, a relatively cheap and shorter development... and yes, I realize most people wouldn't pay as much as I would. Especially not for something retro-styled. But so what? If it's a digital-only title that's relatively cheap, I can still guarantee it makes its development cost back EASY without them ever having to manufacture a physical copy. Because it's THE LEGEND OF ZELDA for god's sake!

(I honestly don't know why Nintendo has never embraced the retro pixel art that is so popular with other companies, because those companies are usually aping THEIR damn games. Seems like something IDEAL for their download-only titles, don't you think? A retro-styled Zelda... or Metroid... or even a retro Mario... or something more obscure that people still love, like another Kid Icarus. You could do any of it, you guys. ANY of it. The money's just waiting for you. You wouldn't even BELIEVE how much.)

Since I know someone is going to ask: Yes, "A Link Between Worlds" is the .5 in the "6.5 titles" I referenced earlier, because its two overworlds are almost entirely identical to a world we've already explored in detail in a previous 2D Zelda game. Like, they're WAY more similar than even the land-based overworlds of BotW vs TotK. The changes are downright miniscule. Giving them a ".5" credit for that seems apt, if not a little generous.

Which basically means I haven't had a delicious full-on brand-new 2D Zelda game since *checks notes* 2005!!!!

And while Minish Cap is easier than the Oracles, I still think it's a banger.

And let's not forget that the two Oracles, The Minish Cap, and even the recent Link's Awakening remake were all outsourced. That means that it would be entirely reasonable for Nintendo to just outsource for a new one. Hire an outside company.

Or, y'know, whatever. You could just... keep remastering the 3D games over and over and only ever make the new fancy VERY DIFFERENT things that take five years and never ever make anything like you used to ever again.

But I really hope that's not all there is to look forward to.
