I adore your take on DS2 and wanted to know what ur thoughts were on Elden Ring and/or DS 3!

(also I have been loving ur comics!!!)

First off: Thank you! Glad you like my comics! <3

I mentioned it briefly in the DS2 post, and it's been said by others, but Dark Souls 3 is about ending Dark Souls. And it does that very well. The "time and space is falling apart and that's why the geography is like that" that people sometimes say about DS2 is literally, textually true in 3. The Dreg Heap is a pile of other, older Dark Souls areas collapsing in on each other. This world has been going on and on, repeating and prolonging the Age of Fire that should have ended long ago, and it's just breaking down. You can't keep the same thing going forever, that's true in the universe of the story, and of a franchise of dark fantasy action RPGs.

It's kind of funny and also impressive that Miyazaki and the team hit that point, saying if they keep doing this it's going to fall apart, on game three of the franchise. There's so many series out there that will pump out game after game of the same stuff, to the point they stop numbering them and give them subtitles to hide the fact that they're on game 23 of this thing, and FromSoft said "three's our limit for this one" and gave us the greatest hits final bow before moving on to new different takes on their subgenre of games.

Enter Elden Ring! The game that got me into FromSoft games. Every time people talked about Dark Souls it was always about how hard they were, and the whole "git gud" mentality, which made them seem like they would 100% be not my kind of thing. But I am an absolute sucker for a fantasy open world, so I dipped my toes into Elden Ring, and really enjoyed it! Being able to just go exploring and do something else whenever I got stuck was a huge plus, as are spirit ash summons. The game is hard, for sure, but there's also a lot of ways to ease that difficulty (not eliminate it, but ease it (also there's no excuse to not have a pause button, that's stupid, don't @ me))

As far as lore and storytelling, Elden Ring has a lot of cool stuff (that's my wife Ranni, my cool witch wife Ranni) but I don't know that I have so definite a "take" on its story. It goes back to the Dark Souls 1 and 3 well of "some important shit happened, go kill this list of bosses about it" but I appreciate that you have a lot more choice in regards to your ending. It's not "link the fire or don't" it's "you're creating a new age, what do you want that age to be like?" with a few compelling choices and some evil bastard ones for fun.

Assorted side thoughts:

FP is better than spell uses. More convenient, more flexible, lets you focus on Mind to allow yourself to cast more spells.

All of my first playthroughs were sword and board, both because of caution going in and because I like the "knight with a sword and shield" aesthetic.

Related to the last point, Guard Counters are a great addition in ER, and the "Sekiro style block" crystal tear for the Physick in the DLC should have been a talisman or something permanent, to just make that a play style people can use.

The Alva Armor rules, 10/10 best fit in Dark Souls

I really like Shadow of the Erdtree, but it is the absolute limit on the current version of Souls-game mechanics. Not everyone is Let Me Solo Her, and between both the extremely punishing difficulty and the becoming more repetitive nature of a lot of the boss design, they need to change up the combat to keep things going. Sekiro seems to be a step in that direction from what I hear?

No boss fight in any video game has ever made me feel as cool as Slave Knight Gael in the DS3 DLC. It just worked for me on pretty much every level. The story, the music, the visuals, the difficulty. I can beat him, and it's hard but not a kind of hard that makes me angry at the game. Dodging in and out of his attacks, getting my own hits in, it felt like a kick ass dance of fantasy combat. It's peak.

Review 2 in series for Dragon Age Veilguard

First part of review series is below.

I'm not an asshole disclaimer (same as the first one, if you read that, you can just skip down to the cut.)

Something came to my attention. I need to make it crystal clear that I utterly love the diversity in DAV. It's fantastic. I'm also a heavily left leaning, non-binary, queer as fuck reviewer, editor, and author.

I'm on media blackout while I play this, so I'm only getting second-hand info on how awful it is right now in the DA Fandom. Please be safe and take care of yourselves. Arguing with incels and white supremacists is completely pointless. They sea lion worse than an actual sea lion. Your mental health is important.

Though, every single time the anti-queer brigade comes out for a new DA game, I sit there thinking 'have you bozos ever played any DA game, like, ever?' My guess is nope.

Negative review

While I'm incredibly grateful that I can play this game, because I really hope the story actually starts soon, (yes, I said it, the pacing on this is terrible, and I'm both an editor and a writer, I have a clue). I hate to say... I am soooo glad I didn't buy it. Or I'd be demanding a refund. I didn’t actually look at the price tag, but it must’ve been around $120 Canadian. Given our cost of living crisis, that's obscene but whatever. Games are expensive.

It's just not worth that much in its current state. Sure. Games on release often have bugs. I kinda hate spending money to be an unpaid beta tester. BG3 had nowhere near as many.

My computer comes down right around the middle of the minimum and recommended specs. DA4 doesn't even make it get hot like BG3 makes it. So I'm really thinking glitchy game vs computer issues. Considering I'm not the only one it's happening to... welp. (I looked the glitch up, it's pretty common.)

5 out of 10 loads, my character glitches back to the stock elf body. And if I continue playing, it corrupts my saves and they won't load. It has also happened mid-battle, too. So I have to figure out which save to go back to before the glitch bit. Which, without pics in the save files is fun /s.

'Balanced' play isn’t. I play on tactician/hard in most games. I'm on balanced, and keep fucking dying. TBH I'm not extremely awesome with the controls and moves yet, but I'm not bad either. I honestly just think the bad guys are too overpowered (way too fast, hit too hard, and it takes too long to break their armour) for beginning levels. And yes, I have my Rook in the best armour I currently have. Maybe if I could carry more than 3 potions, it wouldn't matter as much, but IDEK man.

And you know what isn't actually any fun in games? Dying a lot. Also? Having to drop my difficulty level for regular bad guys less than ten hours into the game. It's still teaching me moves ffs, so is sorta the tutorial. I'm not a 'get gud' type. I think that's ridiculous. Gaming is supposed to be fun. If it makes it more fun to drop the level for a boss fight or whatever, more power to you. But I usually don't have to until end-game material. If I have to at all. It's honestly pretty rare. Load time is ridiculous, so every time an over-powered not-a-fucking-darkspawn slams my rogue (which I swear shouldn't be possible, I know how to fight with rogues, they're my first and favourite class), I get creamed because I'm bloody stuck in a place I shouldn't get stuck in.

I know they had testing on this. Wasn't that why the date was pushed back? My memory isn't great since COVID but I think I might’ve seen that somewhere.

Solavellans will likely be disappointed in the first seven hours. You see Solas twice. He may as well not even be in the game.

And I really hate to say this, but I'm just bored. I wasn’t itching to play it like I usually am with good games. (If a game catches me up, it's about the only thing I want to do.) I still loaded it up tonight, didn’t have anything better to do. (Because I'd probably have done that instead.) I'm mostly playing so I know what happens in the story myself. And I was hoping we'd get some answers to all this lore that lives in my head, rent free. So, whatever, I'm still hoping it will catch me up. I'll keep playing in hopes we actually get something resembling a story at some point soon.

And the number of editorial errors is ridiculous. Both developmental and copy.

'Cause bodies can't decompose in the Anderfels? Because nothing external lives there? Granted, I have specialized knowledge there (former forensic anthropologist) but, that isn't remotely how decomp works.

Does your 3 week old raw hamburger not rot because it was in a cold, dark place without any external decomposers? (My 17 year old knew the correct answer to that, so did my 12 year old.)

The primary forms of humanoid/mammalian decomposition come from inside us. Bugs don't even start showing up for a bit. Why do you think bodies bloat? Our gut bacteria going wild. Why do you think bodies are routinely embalmed? No bugs (usually) in a funeral home or morgue either.

And y'know? I actually outright told Epler on Twitter (before it went to complete hell) that he needed a better editor or 4 after playing DAI. And DAV already has more editorial issues than I noticed in the whole first half of DAI. Way to prove my point.

I'm an exacting editor. I'm pretty good at it. And I don't expect perfection in anything. Perfectionism is a trauma response, after all. But so many errors so soon? Really?

I'm not even getting into the story issues. Because I'm still hoping we actually, y'know, get to a story? And if I'm really lucky? That story will cover some of the glaring errors.

But so far? I'm not impressed. I've never, since I started playing DA games, been fucking bored.

Pre-DT Muttering

Mostly complaints and worries. I haven't been playing the game much, but I did pre-order DT and will be poking my nose into it for a good sniff once the queues level out.

-For the EW pre-order, we got Menphina's earring, and we went to the moon. In DT we're getting Azeyma's earring. While I'd love to take a rocket right into the sun and end my existential suffering, I feel like this is a clever tie-in to the fact that Tural is based on central/south America, where the "people of the sun" (Aztecs) lived. And you would not believe how hard it is to find info on "people of the sun" without bringing up Rage Against the Machine.

-Yoshi-P said to brush up on the roles that each of the Convocation of 14 played. This does not bode well for me because I'm really really tired of references to the ancients was hoping this expansion would break free of them entirely.

-Speaking of "breaking free of things," I do still like the Scions a lot (and they've have had some amazing character development that I love to see,) but I kind of wish they'd just let us be for awhile and let us get to know some other NPCs that won't just become irrelevant by the end of the expansion. This expansion is promising a fresh start, but I'm not seeing it?

-And again with the breaking free point. Solution 9? Haven't the Allagans given us enough of that glowy future shit over the past 10 years? But that assumption might be unfair since it looks like more of a dark Bladerunner/Cyberpunk vibe than an "advanced civilization buried for centuries vibe. Either way I think I'd rather just go play in the dirt somewhere.

-I still don't like the premise of this expansion. I mean, having you play the role of a foreign mercenary hired to help a royal win a war of succession? As a deeply ashamed American, I can tell you that shit is just a bad idea.

-Wuk Lamat's ENG voice is just fine. I'm not saying its the best voice ever, but nearly all of the criticism I've seen of it is thinly veiled transphobia and please get away from me with that shit. I'm also seeing a lot of the same sort of hate for her that people have for Lyse Hext. What is everyone's problem with energetic jock girls who just want to help people? They just happen to help those people by punching other people and that's okay.

-Erenville is hot. You got me.

-Healer strike? I haven't been good at a healer class since pre-SB AST so I was indifferent to the whole idea. Then I saw the graphs tracking skill usage in Savage content for SCH for each expansion and... Oof. Best of luck to you all.

-I'll be going into it as a DNC main, which marks the first expansion since HW where I'm not going into it as a SMN main (I've been playing since shortly before HW dropped.) I don't think my FFXIV gamer identity will ever recover from the SMN changes. I'm maining DNC pretty much just because its easy. I'm not really good at any other class. I'm a middle-aged, married adult with a job, bills and back/neck pain. I don't want to spend hours practicing rotations until I git gud, but I also don't want to drag my parties down with my lack of skill, so easy peasy dancy squeezy it is. Maybe I should try BRD again since it was my original main before SMN?

-Pictomancer and Viper? Maybe once the novelty wears off.

Part of an Ask Chain from @friend-of-giants shifted a bit because I can LOL Share 10 random details about your version of Teldryn in your fic universe! Anything at all. Back story, ideas, character design. Anything! As the wise corvid @paraparadigm has told me before, once you've got an NPC as a POV character, this version of them sort of becomes and OC after all. (:

Hey let's encourage my brain worms on a Saturday, it's free real estate! Teldryn is fun to write tbh, and just as fun to draw. So here are 10 things that have been floating around in my head (and some art because I said so). Chronological order and some non-specifics.

Under the cut because this is long.

He was born in Cheydinhal (still working on the year). His mother had moved out there to follow his father (who subsequently died a good 4 years in doing something suspect). She ends up moving back to Blacklight (she comes from a merchant family, and she may have also let her partner pilfer some of those goods prior to leaving for Cyrodiil since the smuggling of goods out of Morrowind was pretty lucrative and she wanted to please him). She did not receive a warm welcome but was still accepted back home so long as she worked off her debt. Teldryn gets his education in Blacklight. He's quite proficient in both Dunmeris and Cyrodilic and has very nice handwriting in both alphabets, that guy knows cursive! He does get some minor combat training, as well as training to help control his crazy explosive fire magic. He was being set up to work as an ebony merchant, and that was generally the main focus of his education but he had other ideas.

2. He moves back to Cheydinhal in his late teens. He had other ideas after all and a lot of connections to the Ebony trade. He falls in with his father's old crew, not necessarily by chance and starts redirecting shipments from Morrowind. His family finds out (after a good few decades of searching) and they use his mother to track him down (he no longer speaks to any of them because of this). It ends in his arrest and subsequent imprisonment (plus that crew may have thrown him under the proverbial carriage). He's transferred to the Imperial prisons and begins to think he's probably getting executed. He's then blindfolded and taken to a carriage. He's afraid that the Imperials are going to hand him back over to his family and they'd probably execute him anyway. He starts trying to plan an escape but fails, mostly because the irons he's wearing have a magicka drain enchantment so he can't just light the whole place on fire. He gets his nose broken for the first time and gets his first nose scar, the really long one from the base of a sword. He gives up when he's loaded onto a ship.

3. He'd never been to Vvardenfell prior to getting dumped in Seyda Neen. He's a bit confused with the whole situation, he was so convinced that he'd be taken back to Blacklight and punished there. Instead, he's given orders to go see some Imperial in Balmora who clearly has a skooma habit. He's instructed to basically "ged gud scrub" and joins the fighters guild but quickly gets bored with it. He does take to one-handed weaponry, and he has a talent for swordsmanship but he's bored. He goes back to Caius Cosades hoping for something fun.

4. He mentally checks out after contracting Corprus. Actually, he mentally checks out for the whole Nerevarine thing. The corprus changes him a lot he almost completely loses his sense of taste (from Divayth Fyr's "cure") and had to burn off the corprus tumours that developed on his arm (its basically a hand print) he has a scar on his cheek now from the removal of a smaller tumour, a large one on his torso that looks pretty nasty as just the burn scar but was horrid prior to taking the cure and another corprus scar on his right inner thigh. Fyr kinda let them grow over the course of a week and then gave him the cure in three separate dosages. I think the experimentation is what started his constant spiralling. He starts drinking a lot more at this point and finds himself in Vivec City.

5. He didn't entirely join the Morag Tong but he associated with some of their members quite heavily and may have done one or two contracts. Geldis becomes his longest and closest friend, and the two of them annoy the crap out of Aphia, who's stuck healing the results of their stupidity. He gets the nifty eyebrow scar at this point just because Aphia didn't feel like healing him after his latest bar fight. He discovers a love for extremely spicy food since it's all he can taste now.

6. He heads back to Cyrodiil after the events of Morrowind and finds himself in Kvatch restarting his ebony smuggling ring with some old contacts, though not the ones who let him get arrested six years prior. He runs into Jiub again and they kinda chill for a while. It's nice and he's less into drinking himself into a stupor 24/7. Of course, then the Oblivion Crisis happens, he watches Jiub get soul trapped by a dremora and does the thing he's become really good at. Fucking the fuck off out of there. He finds himself in the Imperial City and agrees to do a very large job for the Grey Fox. He steals an Elder Scroll from the Imperial Palace and sells it back to the Grey Fox for A LOT OF MONEY. He then gets the Guild to spread a rumour about him leaving to go to Akavir, so that no one will bother him about helping with the Oblivion Crisis. He actually goes south to learn swordplay, he also shaves his head (which he really didn't want to do, he loved that rat boi style) and begins hiding his face.

7. Azura instructs him not to intervene in the whole Red Mountain thing. He goes back to Morrowind anyway and finds it absolutely devastated, and a lot of people blame him for it. He's full-time covering his face now and, after getting Geldis and Aphia out of a nasty situation in a cave where they are the only survivors. They make it to Windhelm and try to make a life in the Gray Quarter, but it doesn't work out. Teldryn suggests Raven Rock, he technically built the place anyway and the Redoran run it now so why not? He and Geldis set up the Retching Netch with Teldryn's massive Elder Scroll fortune. So, he is co-owners with Geldis, though Geldis actually runs the place full-time.

8. Teldryn kinda gave the place its name. Yes, I have that story Geldis tells you be about Teldryn and his drinking issues. That was another rock bottom and Geldis kinda kicks him out/convinces him to take up mercenary work. He has a few patrons but they all tend to die whilst he's in their service. Mostly because he won't follow them into bandit camps or Falmer dens where they're heavily outnumbered. He fucks up massively in Windhelm and ends up being chased across Northern Tamriel on and off for 22 years. He ends up back in Solstheim, greeted by the world's longest facepalm from Geldis who ends up hiding him for 12 of those years. This is basically where Serious Mistakes begins, he's an absolute mess at this point. His messes involve sloppy spell casting and fire explosions.

9. Some random fun facts about him. I already mentioned his taste issue but he's also lactose intolerant (though I think that's just something that's more common in elves in general). He avoids all dairy like the plague. His love of overly spicy food (coz that's all he can taste) means that he must add chilli oil to everything. Geldis keeps an earthenware bottle filled with the stuff under the bar because feeding Teldryn means ruining everyone else's food. So, it's an edition during plating, if it's not added he'll bitch endlessly about it tasting like ash.

   Teldryn's scaring gets irritated easily and he's pedantic about bathing and smells (Fyr kinda messed with his brain on this point and corprus makes him feel dirty all the time). He drinks Spiced Skinpeel Simmer in the mornings to relieve the irritation. It tastes awful to most people but not having much of a sense of taste kinda helps.

    His mother seems to have survived all the events from the last 3 games. She sends him letters pleading for him to come home. Teldryn did come home one time during his 22-year hiding spree and it didn't go well. He loves Blacklight, just not with her in it. She sends letters to Geldis and they've piled up over the years. He stopped reading them, he doesn't want to talk to her, and he won't forgive her for getting him arrested and basically causing his life to spiral. Morrowind blames him for their destruction, and he blames her for his.

    He likes his things as is and uses objects until they disintegrate. His red scarf is 200 years old at this point and his shirt is about the same age, newest thing he owns is a pair of pants that’s about 100 years old. He loves his chitin armour more than most things and takes impeccable care of it, despite its age. Sydari will try to get him something new later and it’s met with a lot of confusion because “Why use the new thing when this shirt is so much more comfortable”. So, she steals it (for sleepwear, it’s very soft), which forces him into actually using new things… he does eventually steal it back.

He left most of the artifacts from his Nerevarine days in the care of Neloth, he told him to just “dump it, sell it, fucking experiment I don’t give a shit! I just don’t want anything to do with it anymore”. That is, he left everything except the Moon and Star Ring. He’d have left that too, but he can’t get the damn thing off his finger. It barely fits him (Nerevar being smaller than him physically in most ways, I like him being short tbh). He fiddles with it a lot because it bothers him so much.

You probably figured from the art that he’s a smoker, because voice reasons. Something something LORE something something edge!

10. And a description of him during the Fourth Era. So, I’ve mostly drawn him during and slightly after his Nerevarine days because I’m obsessed with the hairstyle. But he shaves off the whole thing during the Oblivion Crisis and wears it like that for a little while but ends up regrowing the mohawk in various iterations. By 4th era 199 (When the fic actually starts) he’s considering growing out the back again because he misses it. When Sydari first sees him without the helmet I’ll describe it as grown out and messy. He’s wearing a helmet all day and doesn’t have anything to style it with so it’s kinda lazily finger-combed back. When he gets the chance, he shaves the sides again and evens out everything but the back.

He has a few facial scars which I talked about above, one through his right eyebrow and two across his nose, he also has one on his left cheek. He’s got the hand-shaped arm scar, a very large one on his lower left torso and one large one on his inner right thigh. His nose has been broken on a few occasions, the first one being with the butt of a sword (as mentioned above, that’s where the long scar comes from) a few times in bar fights (and the eyebrow scar being from someone getting overly mad and pulling a knife on him, he’s lucky he didn’t lose his eye). The second nose scar was from getting it broken during a fuck up in Windhelm, which earns him another scar at the nape of his neck. His most recent nose break will be in 201 when Brand-Shei headbutts him in the face. Teldryn kinda deserved it tbh.

All my elves have piercings all over their ears because I can’t help myself. Teldryn has several, three on the right ear and six on the left. Aside from the moon and star ring on his left index finger (which is stuck), he wears a few silver rings on both hands which he changes about depending on his mood.

The face tats he got during his teens because he thought they looked cool, I have the mouth ones extend from his bottom lip down to about halfway down his throat. I’m kinda leaning away from body tats because I’m lazy and he’s got a lot of scarring anyway.
