Maria Luisa di Borbone, Princess of the Two Sicilies
Artist: Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (French, 1755–1842)
Date: 1790
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The Met 5th Ave, New York City, NY, United States
Description
For her likeness of Maria Luisa (1773–1802), painted in Naples, Vigée Le Brun abandoned the convention of formal royal portraiture in accordance with which the sitter’s rank is indicated. Instead, she presents the rather plain princess seated at a desk, her porte-crayon in hand, providing a glimpse of her drawing. The effect is intimate and spontaneous.

Read an interesting research paper on eye contact and joint attention with robots, in two groups, itallian and singaporean. I find it interesting that singaporeans will engage in joint attention wirh a robot face on a screen but italians wont because its face isnt stimulating enough to induce gaze following. This is a real leap but it makes me wonder if maybe being autistic socially was a bit easier there because culturally there just wasnt as much as expectation for eye contact as in the west. Idk its almost 5am and im readinf research papers instead of sleeping yipeee
"Our results showed that Singaporean participants are more likely to engage in joint attention with a robot face presented on the screen, while for Italian participants, this kind of stimulus might not be sufficient to induce gaze following. This might be related to the degree with which a simplified (2D) robot avatar is perceived as a social stimulus, which seems to be culture dependent. Such result has implications for the design of social robots, as it suggests that cultural factors need to be taken into account for understanding how “social” a simple robot behavior appears, which, in consequence, impacts social attunement"

NEWBIE NEEDS HELP
Hello all. Very new and currently reaserching. Looking for guidance and reading materials. I will give some backround info, the reason I'm reaserching, and what I have consumed already.
Backround on me. I am an Italian American, mostly southern Italian, primarily Sicily. (As far as I know, i will be takeing an ancestory DNA test soon) My family was running from organized crime and wanted to "americanize" fast so I did not really grow up culturally scicilian. I grew up catholic. I generally consider myself an architypical theist. I am not opposed to others views and practices like some people that use a similar identity. I have been passively practicing various traditions at my leisure for a few years now. Some inspiration from Wicca, the Heathen Reconstruction Movement, and more modern eclectic writers like Mat Auryn's "Psychic Witch." With all that being said I am a casual practioner of witchcraft at best but am very much convinced of a creator diety.
Recently I have came across itallian folk traditions and found striking similarities with my family and "what we did in Sicily" as my grandpa would say. About 2 years ago there was a lot of random shitty things happening in the family. My grandpa instructed my sister to gift me a cornicello neclace because he thought this is the work of the Mal'occhio. (he pernounced it ma-luk-e-a) Ever since I've worn it everyday. After a recent death in the family I decided to research this further and came across a YouTube video by Chaotic Witch Aunt that was a kind of "beginners guide," from here is where my general research has taken off from. I noticed, in my family, a focus on saint veneration, saint punishing, Mal'occhio, and stories of my great Grandfather describing a kind of shamanism in his "pinwheel village". My guess is that my recent family partook in a type of Benidictaria. And yes I know they would not have called themselves that as far as I know everyone has been Devote catholics, even though they don't really act like devote catholics. I COULD BE WRONG OFC.
Some of the stuff I consumed so far is various blog posts and reddit threads relating to symbolism, charms, icons.., the previously mentioned YouTube video, a interview with Angela Buca from Chaotic Witch Aunt, I started reading "itallian witchcraft" by Raven Gramassi (taking it with a grain of salt), and I will occasionally crack into the 13 part paper "Spells, Saints, and Strege." By Sabina Magliocco, not much yet though.
My to read list is this right now.
Finishing Sabinas paper.
The things we do, Augustino Taumaturgo.
Aradia, Charles Leland. Stregheria, Leland.
Etruscan magic and occult remedies, Leland.
Pre prints that Angela Buca has made available.
My goal here is more so in the realm of reconstruction, history, and gathering more info. I have made the decision to experiment with saint veneration since it is somthing I have done in the past and somthing that feels natural to me. I do not want to jump into a new practice all willy nilly without the proper reaserch.
Looking for more reading materials, guidance on prioritizing the materials I already have listed, general advice to newcomers into the community, personal stories of your practice or relationship with italian folk traditions, and a reason why everyone seems to hate Gramassi haha.
Sorry this post is so long I felt it necessary to explain my intentions and where the come from. I understand that this is a diverse and nuanced community and subject to research.
Feel free to reach out in DMs aslo.

20 Things About You Tag Game
Tagged by @aquabluemoonbutterfly, which is honestly just so sweet? Even if it was just because of a lack of other people to tag, I didn't realize there were other actual humans who acknowledge my presence on this hellsite.
Rules: Tell 20 facts about yourself and tag 20 people.
Nickname: On my blog i prefer Nagi, but i get called Mel, or Mellie in my everyday life. People often like to switch between the two.
Pet Peeves: Being touched without warning, Liars, and when people blame their shitty behavior on their zodiac sign like its an excuse.
Zodiac: Scorpio!
Height: 5'2, i'm a shorty.
Last movie: The Princess Diaries 2, its my feel good movie. So i watch it whenever i need a pick me up.
Thing you last googled: "Its time for Thomas the train to go meme" I'm only slightly embarrassed by this. Slightly.
Favourite musicians: Do groups count? Cause i listen to a lot of Set It Off. OH! i also listen to Jubyphonic a lot. I like her covers, especially the Kagerou Project ones.
Song stuck in your head: "Dead girl walking" from Heathers the Musical. Its been stuck in my head for almost 2 weeks. And before that it was Candy store from the same musical. So all in all, i'm theatre production trash. Yay.
Other blogs?: Nah, its too much effort. If i like something i reblog it on just the one blog, simple as that.
Do you get asks?: Not really, i think i've only ever received like 2 asks since i started on tumblr.
Amount of sleep: Lmao sleep? What's that? I'm always so busy in my everyday life between cosplay, school, work and everyday responsibilities that i don't really get any. I'm lucky if i even get 4 hours of sleep a night.
Lucky Number: 11. And this is because i was born on the 11th day on the 11th month at 1 in the morning.
What you're wearing: Pyjamas. Fuzzy white cat print bottoms, a black tank top and pink fuzzy bunny slippers. I'll pretty much be like this the whole day.
Dream job: An Art director! My own art is just cringe, so i'll use what knowledge i possess and make others art shine 1000000 times brighter!
Dream Trip: Italy! Its warm, surrounded by art, culture, has some sick stone architecture and jaw dropping scenery. Its honestly my dream to live there someday, not just visit.
Favourite food: Tacos, or really anything sweet thats not coffee flavoured or dark chocolate.
Instruments: Aside from really poor piano i don't play any instruments. But I'd love to pick up violin.
Languages: Although french was my first language my more dominant language is english. I also have basics in itallian, but its still really shaky.
Songs: The Fire emblem Echoes soundtrack is my athstetic. Its dramatic af. Also the Shadow Of The Colossus soundtrack is to die for, i listen to it when i fall asleep. (Wow i just realized how few of my songs either have words or are in english.)
Aesthetic: Oh boi, uhhhh idk? Navy blue, baby pink and white? Or red, black, and gray i guess. I literally have no clue.
Okay so i don't actually know 20 people really sooo im gonna tag maybe 2 or 3. @evil-muffins @mormikas @limejellojellyfish @atalantaz your turn!

It’s sort of fascinating cause blue eyes Jesus is a very american phenomenon.
Even european depictions give him brown eyes for an “everyman” appeal. probably its copies from da vinchis depictions that made him look like an itallian nobleman. So long-haired with brown eyes and hair.
If you wanted him to be historical long hair is not accurate for the time and place hes supposed to have lived in.
the virgin mary has gone through every possible hair color in the different artistic movements.
It’s worth noticing that “historical accuracy” is a very recent idea that only came around in the 19th century or so.
Me & my classmates were very befuddled when our teachers showed us this medieval painting of a blonde virgin Mary in medieval clothes - We didn’t think much about what her ethnicity should be but we were adamant that she belongs in “Roman Times”, not a medieval
In the end everyone draws their gods like themselves. Whats a god but your personified superego?
Hence how when ppl report seeing aparitions of the virgin Mary she is always the beauty ideal of their time & culture.
Jesus was probably never a real historical person, his “character” was based on an earlier jewish idea of god’s high priest in heaven. Meaning the judaism in the roman era specifically, not earlier conceptions of it nor modern ones.
So let the euro-americans make him blond, but also, let christians of other ethnicities also draw him like themselves.

Can you like give me an example of white culture then
yeah google it, lots of cultures are white and have culture. Idk much about america but as a canadain my culture includes things like the process of maple syrup, moose, the maple leaf if a symbol of my culture, etc. We are known for snow, icefishing, etc. Germans are whiite, famous for beer and sausages. British? Tea, their movie/tv shows and actors, biscuts, certain meals, fish and chips, etc. French for wine, their language, and bread. Itallian (maybe, i think they can also have poc roots so correct me on that.), pizza, spaghetti, etc
Russian for vodka, their “in soviet russia” memes basically sum up their culture and personality, etc, I’m mostly listing foods cause its the most easy and most shared form of culture but other white cultures also include Dutch, Norwegian, Finish, etc White culture fucking exists outside of america y’know. Get your head out of your ass.

And the spirit appropriation thing isn't just people appropriating POC cultures, it really really upsets me when people use Celtic spirits or language or traditions, bc it's a closed culture but people don't seem to care just bc it's European
^^^^^^^^Right here!I’m Welsh and worship welsh gods and work with their spirits.
But seriously, there are German cultures, there are Itallian and Spanish cultures you can’t use. Even Australian ones.I think…ok Im problematic and don’t really know many closed cultures, but yeah, do lots of research if you are going to work with a spirit or deity you aren’t 100% if it’s open or not.
Edit: my beloved Cress informed me that nordic is open an encouraged! I was aware the gods were but not 100 on the spirits so its all good! Still do research tho!

A brief summary of my classes this year:
1. A class that compares the Hamilton play to a textbook to see how accurate it is. Yes, part of the HW was to listen to the musical many times over summer. Yes, we do get to act it out in class.
2. I get to go to Ireland! Cultural Anthropology in Ireland. Basically we just get to talk to the locals and travel around Ireland for a month. So freakin excited guys.
3. A U.S. History course that happens to be taught by my advisor and she loves rant papers so we just get to rant about U.S historical things. This will be fun.
4. Learning about the persecution and tolerance of minorities in medieval Europe. I’m a european history major so for me this will be really interesting.
5. We try to recreate political arguments while learning about India’s road to independence so we have to team up and try to find the best solutions and see if we can make it work before learning the actual solution that was used.
6. Itallian Renaissance Art for my gen eds art credit. But i get to learn about the history of Michelangelo and other great artists, so again, I am ok with this.
7. Intro to Creative Writing. I get to write stories. Nothing else needs to be said.
8. Intro to Archaeology! I get to learn how to analyze and dig cool things up. :)
Needless to say I am so excited for my classes throughout this year.
#when i finally get to be an upperclassman in college#i relish being a history major#and an english minor#because i get to take all the really interesting classes#and learn all the cool interesting things#im geeking out#i love this stuff#i love my college

6 Months
Well everyone, I have officially been gone for a half of a year! It does not feel like it has been so long. Ever since I arrived, my perception of time has been speed up in such a way that months feel like weeks. I can't explain it, but it doesn't feel like I've been here all that long. In the beginning of my exchange, the only Thai I knew was Sa wa dee, Pom hue, mai pen rai and ka phom kap, and while those might not be accurate romantinizations of the respective phrases, they mean hello, I'm hungry, don't worry about it and thank you. Currently, my ability in the language is comparable to that of a three year old, which is better than I hoped for. I am able to recognise the sound of about 90% of the consonants, however the wall I run into is vowels. Word and sentence structure is almost incomperable to English, so the point I'm at now is extremely good for my ammount of time here, according to some foreign teachers who have been here for years and are still clueless when it comes to reading. As for my relationship with my host family, I am close to all of them, except mom. She, of course, is very kind, but her demenor makes me feel like she is perpetually angry with me. When I say things to her, she often says nothing, and if she does reply, it's a short and simple reply. M and Dad say that's just the way she is, and I understand that, but I constantly feel like I've done something wrong, regardless. It's okay though, I just need to remember to remind myself that there is nothing wrong. At school, I'm thriving. I have plenty of friends, and I do have a bit of an inner circle that I spend most of my time with. I'm taking math, physics, thai, Muay Thai, Thai dancing and soon I will be learning to play a traditional Thai instrument. I am still teaching at the primary school, only now I have an extra pair of hands because there's a Rotary student that lives closer to the school than I do. I went to a luncheon with Rotary in October becausea teacher at my school invited me and Emma, the Itallian student who was also at school, and I met the Rotary student there. We didn't see eachother again until late November when she visited my school, and a teacher mentioned that I taught at the primary school, which prompted me to invite Julia to join me. She's only gone twice though, which is not a big deal. In these six months I have learned an incomprehensible number of lessons, but there are six that stand out to me the most. 1. Things just work out. Don't get too worried or stressed put about something because chances are it will not be as bad as you think. 2. You can't make things happen simply by asking once. This especially applies to when I want to do stuff with my friends. You must have a plan. You want to go to the mall? What will you do there? What movie will you watch? What will you eat? Who will pay? If you suggest to do something, have a plan about how to do it. 3. Don't second guess yourself. If you have the opporotunity to do something, just do it. 4. Guava Juice is the miracle cure for stomach illess. If you feel like you're gettong traveler's sickness, get a one liter bottle of guava juice, not from concentrate, and drink it over the course of three days. 5. When talking to elders, don't agree with them by saying 'uh-huh' in Thai culture, that is impolite. 6. The tangible is more reliable than speculation. If somebody tells you something about a culture, you need to see it first hand. Until you witness it, it can be assumed to be incorrect, whether or not it is a good thing. If you are unable to experience something yourself, seek someone who has.
