MEMORANDUM ON INTENDED EVENTS RE: THE DEATH OF BENITO MUSSOLINI AND CLARETTA PETACCI April 28, 1945 Event to Occur: On 27 April 1945, Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci, together with other fascist leaders, will be travelling in a German convoy near the village of Dongo on the north westen shore of Lake Como. A group of local communist partisans led by Pier Luigi Bellini delle Stelle and Urbano Lazzaro will the convoy and forced it to halt. The partisans will recognise one Italian fascist leader in the convoy, but not Mussolini at this stage, and make the Germans hand over all the Italians in exchange for allowing the Germands to proceed. Mussolini will later be recognized among the convoy passengers. The partisans will arrest Mussolini and take him to Dongo, where he will spend part of the night in the local barracks. Over fifty fascist leaders and their families will be found in the convoy and arrested by the partisans. Aside from Mussolini and Petacci, sixteen of the most prominent of them will be summarily shot in Dongo the following day and a further ten will be killed over two successive nights. Claretta Petacci, Mussolini's mistress, will be captured and executed with him. Fighting will still be going on in the area around Dongo. Fearing that Mussolini and Petacci might be rescued by fascist supporters, the partisans will drive them, in the middle of the night, to a nearby farm of a peasant family named De Maria; this will be a safe place to hold them. Although several conflicting versions and theories of how Mussolini and Petacci died were put forward after the wat, the account of Walter Audisio, or at least is essential components, remains the most credible and id sometimes referred to in Italy as the "official" version. It was largely confirmed by an account provided by Aldo Lampredi and the "classical" narrative of the story was set out in books written in the 1960s by Bellini delle Stelle and Urbano Lazzaro, and the journalist Franco Bandini. Although each of thses accounts vary in detail, they are consistent on the main facts. Audisio and Lampredi left Milan for Dongo early on the morning of 28 April to carry out the orders Audisio had been given by Longo. On arrival in Dongo, they met Bellini delle Stelle, who was the local partisan commander, to arrange for Mussolini to be handed over to them. Audisio used the nom de guerre of "Colonnello Valerio" during his mission. In the evening of 28 April, the bodies of Mussolini, Petacci, and the other executed fascists were loaded onto a van and trucked south to Milan. On arriving in the city in the early hours of 29 April, they were dumped on the ground in the Piazzale Loreto, a suburban square near the main railway station. The choice of location was deliberate. Fifteen partisans had been shot there in August 1944 in retaliation for partisan attacks and Allied bombing raids, and their bodies had then been left on public display. At the time Mussolini is said to have remarked "for the blood of Piazzale Loreto, we shall pay dearly".

The German language anti-war epic, directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger and based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, triumphed last Sunday scooping seven prizes. The film had 14 nominations on the Bafta longlist – the largest number for any film.

The film, which took home the Bafta for best film and best director, broke Italian coming-of-age drama Cinema Paradiso’s record of five for the highest number of Baftas for a foreign language film in 1988.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” The film follows Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), a young German soldier who experiences the horrific reality of serving on the front line.

Remarque (born Erich Paul Remark) was born in 1898 in lower Saxony to a family of French ancestry; he enlisted in the German army at the age of 18 and headed to fight on the Western Front, where he was wounded five times, the last time seriously. Director Edward Berger's reexamination of Erich Maria Remarque's story about German conscripts hurled into the hell of bloody warfare in WWI.

The protagonist of that novel, All Quiet on the Western Front–its German title, Im Westen nichts Neues literally translates as In the West Nothing New–is Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier fighting in the trenches of World War I. The story opens in 1917 when half of Baumer’s company—many of them schoolmates from back in Germany—has been killed in battle.

Loyal to the novel, Berger’s film tells the story of a teenage boy who enlists in the Imperial German Army alongside his school friends, buzzing with exuberance like the fresh-faced protagonists. Though, as the reality of war sets in and the constructed fantasy quickly dissipates, the friends find themselves stuck in the brutality of one of history’s most violent conflicts.

Bafta: Best original score and sound

The director Edward Berger wanted the film to be created from a German perspective. He tasked composer Volker Bertelmann with the job of creating a score he’s never done before, giving him a few insights into what he wanted for the final cut.

Bertelmann, the composer wanted to use instruments connected to that time period, so he used a refurbished harmonium passed down from his grandmother to create “Destructive” sounds for a unique score.

The drama balances the violent tragedy of war with stunning cinematography, shot by James Friend. Filmed in the Czech Republic, Friend uses mostly large-format cameras, taking the viewer through the muddy trenches of war and intense, heart-racing battle scenes.

They filmed the scenes at the Western Front trenches at an abandoned ex-Soviet air base in the Czech Republic town of Milovice. The location was a real gem to embark on pictures, as you see in the film.

He's italian, shows affection through touch and H doesn’t seem to mind. He's not being inappropriate or making H uncomfortable. Is it a bit more than we westeners are used to? Yes. Language family VS Sphere of influence: comparing Europe with East Asia

I’m a student of East Asian languages and cultures at the university of Naples L’Orientale. Most specifically, I study everything about Japan and China, with standard Japanese and Mandarin Chinese as the center.

However, I am also an Italian who has been studying English since preschool and, during high school, got to learn more and more about Latin and Greek, which got me into my passion for languages.

In fact, Europe and East Asia are basically my biggest points of focus when it comes to language history, development and influence, and I love how we can see different aspects of these points.

For instance, what do we find in those regions, when it comes to languages?

EUROPE

The majority of Europe speaks a language from the Indo-European family. The only European countries where the main language does not belong in this family are Turkey and Azerbaijan (both languages are Turkic), Georgia (because Georgian is a Kartvelian language), Malta (their language derives from Arabic, and it’s the only Afro-Asiatic language among the official ones in the EU), Finland, Estonia and Hungary (their languages are Ugro-Finnic) and the Basque countries between Spain and France.

Excluding the Indo-Arian branch (where Persian, Hindi, Urdu and so on come from), the Indo-European languages are divided into:

Romance languages, the ones deriving from Latin. Main examples include Portugues, Spanish, Catalan, French, Occitan, Italian and Romanian;

Celtic languages, once spread throughout the continent, but now confined to the British Isles and the French region of Brittany. Gaelic Irish is even an official language in the European Union;

Albanian, Greek and Armenian form three branches on their own. Studies have tried to pair at least two of them together, but with little to no results;

Latvian and Lithuanian are Baltic languages, often paired with the next ones;

Slavic languages, spread throughout the majority of Eastern Europe. We can find Russian, Polish, Ukranian, Serbian, Bulgarian and many others here;

Germanic languages, the branch English belongs to. Other important languages in this branch are German, Dutch and the languages from the Nordic countries (except for Finnish);

Europe has had a common history and culture, even though there has always been some division between East and West, ever since the Roman empire, where you could divide it into Latin culture and Greek culture.

Therefore, it should not come off as a surprise that languages from different branches went on to influence eachother. The Balkan sprachbund is often used as a modern example, with Greek, Albanian, Bulgarian, Romanian and other languages sharing common aspects that aren’t found in other languages of their branches.

Another example is found with Germanic and Romance languages. Ever since the Barbarian invasions of Rome, those two branches have come in touch and started sharing vocabulary, features and similar aspects.

For instance, the word bank derives from the Italian banca, which in turn derives from banka, the Longobardian word for bench.

Also, before English was considered the “lingua franca” of the World, this role was filled by French, which inherited it from Latin (kinda like a father passing the torch to his son). As other idioms have now plenty of anglophone words, it makes sense that, back in the day, Romance vocabulary made its way to Great Britain.

Okay, now let’s see the situation in East Asia.

EAST ASIA

For millennia, China has been the central power of this region, which is why the East Asian Cultural Sphere is often called Sinic world.

Said sphere includes China, the Korean peninsula, the Japanese archipelago and Vietnam. And that’s where we can see the main difference with Europe, as those languages aren’t probably even related to eachother!

All varieties of Chinese, such as Mandarin and Cantonese, belong to the Sino-Tibetan family. Then, we have Vietnamese, which is an Austroasiatic language. Said family can be found scattered throughout South-East Asia.

As for Korean and Japanese, those two languages derive from the Koreanic and Japonic families respectively, even though there have been theories that may suggest that these two are related. One believes that Japanese descended from Korea, but the other sees those two groups as belonging to the huge Altaic family, which includes other groups and languages such as Turkish and Mongolian.

However, as for now, we don’t know yet if those theories can be proved right.

Now, despite that, those languages all shared the same writing system at some point.

Chinese characters are still used in Chinese-speaking countries, with the sole distinction of those using Traditional ones and those using the Simplified.

Korea did use them, but switched to the hangul alphabet. 

Vietnam still used them until about a century ago, but the huge rate of analphabetization meant a switch to the current variation of the latin alphabet they still use today.

Japan is the only other country that still uses characters, albeit alongside their two syllabaries, hiragana and katakana.

Chinese culture unified those countries to the point that a Westener could see them in a similar situation as Europe.

Now, let’s compare them.

A RELATIVE AND A MASTER?

When you compare English to a Romance language like Spanish, French or Italian, you may meet words that look and/or sound quite similar. However, there are two differences:

Some words are cognates, meaning that they originate from the same root. For instance, the Italian word for mother is madre;

Others are actually words that “jumped” from a branch to another. As I said earlier, English has plenty of Romance vocabulary, but the other way around is as usual;

In fact, you may compare Indo-European branches to relatives. Imagine you and a brother or a cousin of yours, and those traits you may share: how many of them derive from you two being from the same family? And how many are a consequence of the two of you constantly interacting with eachother?

Meanwhile, the Chinese cultural sphere makes China look like a master. For instance, Japan didn’t have a written system until the VII century, when Chinese (and Korean) buddhist monks came to the archipelago.

Therefore, when you see similar words in Chinese and Japanese, it’s usually because the second one is actually the first one but adapted to fit the local pronounciation.

As such, it comes clear how different the relationship between languages from those two regions of the World are, and I hope you can see why I love them.

I argue that Ampugasa's transformation corresponds to a pattern of Inka imperialism in Huarochirí that enshrined rather than erased the collective ritual practices through which the people of Huarochirí maintained a broad regional identity. My analysis shows that pre-Inka houses were ritually closed, directly connected to the site's ritual core, and remained part of the everyday life experience of people in the settlement. Results from excavations in the site of Ampugasa in Huarochirí (Lurín valley, Lima, Peru) show that pre-Inka residential spaces (patio-groups) were replaced by enclosures with a single access to an internal patio for domestic activities. Most archaeological research on the impact of Inka imperialism at the domestic level centers on the intrusion of Inka-style buildings into pre-Inka domestic settlements as transforming the experience of domestic life and actively hindering interhousehold interaction. This indicates that frontier dynamics based on fluid interactions across different ecological zones and regional sociopolitical movements played a crucial role in this long-term social process. The earliest phase shows close relation with highlands traditions, whereas the influence of tropical rain forest patterns intensified in later phases alongside the continuation of local pottery traditions. The five-staged ceramic sequence from the late eighteenth to late twelfth century cal BC displays specific features of this development, including radical changes in vessel type over several centuries and connections with other pottery traditions. Our new high-resolution chronology of Wairajirca pottery is based on stratigraphic excavation data, a detailed ceramic typology, and a Bayesian analysis of the radiocarbon date from the Jancao site. However, the lack of fine-grained pottery and radiocarbon datasets has handicapped comparative studies’ attempts to track in detail its early development process. He was initially stationed in the field, but his risky and impulsive tactical maneuvers led to his being demoted to desk duty.This article presents a high-resolution chronology of Wairajirca pottery in the Huánuco basin, which has been identified as a frontier region between the Andean highlands and the Amazonian rain forests: its pottery is known for having mixed features from both areas. Einen deftigen Brocken hatten uns Kirlian Camera da im vergangenen Mai hingeklatscht: Cold Pills (Scarlet Gate Of Toxic Daybreak) war ein 16 Stücke starkes Doppelalbum mit wenigen offensichtlichen Hits, ganz viel dunklem Ambient und komplexen Songstrukturen. Bis zur Live-Premiere sollte es noch einige Monate dauern, Konzerte wurden angekündigt und doch wieder abgesagt (zum Beispiel ein Auftritt beim Eastside Festival in Halle an der Saale). Die Band um Angelo Bergamini und Elena Alice Fossi, die sich in den vergangenen anderthalb Jahren mehrfach deutlich gegen die restriktiven Corona-Maßnahmen der Politik positioniert hatte, machte ihrer Wut Luft, wollte die Show in Gelsenkirchen aber unbedingt spielen. Nicht unbedingt Usus, dass eine Band aus Italien für lediglich einen Auftritt in Deutschlands Westen reist – aber klar war am Ende dieses Konzertabends, dass sich die Strapazen gelohnt hatten.

Bevor es soweit war, eröffneten Noyce™ den Abend im Circus Probst. Die nutzten die Gelegenheit, im angenehmen und bestens bekannten Ambiente ihren 25. Bandgeburtstag zu feiern. Im Vorjahr war das Quartett bereits als Support von Rotersand in Gelsenkirchen dabei. Kein Zweifel: Mit ihrer Besetzung, bestehend aus Gesang, Keyboards, Drums und Violine (!), nehmen die Düsseldorfer durchaus eine Ausnahmeposition in der Szene ein. Zum Jubiläumsset gab es den gewohnten Synth-Pop-Sound mit intelligenten und sozialkritischen Texten, gespielt wurden Hits wie Sense Of Despair, This World oder Fall(Out). Abzüge in der B-Note gibt es für die englische Aussprache von Sänger Florian – da wäre auch nach einem Vierteljahrhundert Bühnenerfahrung noch Luft nach oben. Aber, kein Zweifel: Dem Publikum hat es gefallen, es gab durchgängig kräftigen Applaus. Nach knapp 40 Minuten bewegte sich auch so manch einer Richtung Merchandise, um sich mit CDs einzudecken und wurde dort Zeuge eines ziemlich witzigen Zettels mit der Aufschrift “Alle Shirts 20 €”. Wer näher ranging, entdeckte darunter in sehr kleinen Lettern und Klammer die Ergänzung: “Ok, gibt nur eins” …

Diesmal war dann auch die Umbaupause verhältnismäßig kurz, wer in der Region zuhause ist, erinnerte sich vielleicht mit Schaudern an die Vorkommnisse im Dezember 2019 in Oberhausen, wo Kirlian Camera ihre Fans 80 Minuten warten ließen. So aber war alles gut und in neuer Besetzung um Gitarrist Jack Draven und Bassist Matteo Boschini ging es pünktlich los mit dem Cold Pills-Opener The Illusory Guest. Bei wirklich gutem Sound kamen die vielschichtigen und sachte pulsierenden Sounds der neuen Stücke besonders zur Geltung – Lob an dieser Stelle an Willi Dammeier, der am Pult quasi als fünftes Bandmitglied für die akustische Ausgestaltung zuständig war.

Die erste Hälfte stand, mit Ausnahme des auch noch nicht wirklich alten Hellfire, komplett im Zeichen des neuen Albums. Und die an dieser Stelle zum Release gestellte Frage, wie die Gruppe die doch recht sperrig-atmosphärischen Stücke auf die Bühne bringt, kann positiv beantworten werden: Klar, die euphorischen Reaktionen kamen natürlich vor allem bei den später gespielten Klassikern. Doch intensiv und hochatmosphärisch sind Songs wie The 8th President, I Became Alice oder der Titeltrack absolut – es muss ja gerade im Dark-Wave-Genre auch nicht immer zwingend tanzbar zugehen.

Sondervision von Odyssey Europa

Vom großartigen Vorgänger Hologram Moon schaffte es leider nur Sky Collapse ins Set, wenngleich dieses die Fans im Zelt doch richtig in Wallung brachte. Die Reaktionen wurden euphorischer und insbesondere Elena wirkte zunehmend gelöst und erfreut, bedankte sich immer wieder und genoss die Möglichkeit, endlich wieder live zu spielen, in vollen Zügen. Ein besonderes Highlight war ganz klar die italienischsprachige Version von Odyssey Europa, die im April 2020 veröffentlicht wurde (siehe Bandcamp-Link unten). Generell einer der schönsten Songs der Bandgeschichte – hier nochmal in etwas anderem Gewand. Danach gab es noch das unvermeidliche Eclipse, das ebenso unvermeidliche Heldenplatz und, wie Elena im Vorfeld sagte, den für die jüngere Bandhistorie wohl wichtigsten Song überhaupt.

Nach rund 90 Minuten und einem famosen K-Pax verabschiedete sich das Quartett unter verdienten wie lautem Applaus – und mit diesen wohligen, (zu) lange nicht erlebten Gefühlen ließen sich die knapp über 1000 Kilometer Heimweg von Gelsenkirchen nach Parma sicher auch angenehmer zurücklegen. Ein Sonderlob sei an dieser Stelle noch an das äußerst umfangreiche Merchandise-Angebot gerichtet – neben zig Tonträgern gab es verschiedenste Accessoires und – als besonderen Blickfang – zwei neue, äußerst schicke T-Shirts in Dunkelrot und Braun.

Is Russia sowing confusion about the coronavirus in the West?

Russian state media and pro-Kremlin news sites are massively spreading disinformation about the coronavirus, the European Commission warns. The goal would be to exacerbate the crisis by undermining confidence in health care and in Western governments. This can be read in a report from the European diplomatic service that VRT NWS was able to view. The United States and Ukraine are also accusing Russia.

Since the beginning of the corona crisis, the European Commission's Strategic Communication Unit (Stratcom) has been closely monitoring how Russia tries to influence the public debate in the European Union.  In a report, Stratcom confirms that there is indeed a deliberate disinformation campaign by Russia.

Also through the European fact-check platform EUvDisinfo it became known that 86 corona-related cases of disinformation were collected this week alone. These are partly aimed at the Russian population itself, with the virus being described as an example of foreign aggression. The messages intended for an international audience strike a different tone. The virus is said to be spread to thin out the world's population or to install a dictatorship.

Subtle game

"Pro-Kremlin media outlets play a prominent role in spreading disinformation about the coronavirus, with the aim of exacerbating the public health crisis in Western countries and undermining public confidence in national health systems and their governments," said the report of nine pages.

Russia plays the game subtly, the researchers said. They notice, for example, that fake news is not so much spread, but that questionable theories that have arisen elsewhere (for example in China, Iran or the US) are adopted and reinforced by Russian media. "This tactic allows them to avoid the charge of creating disinformation themselves, but instead they can claim to only report what others say," the report adds.

Biological weapon

One of the widely circulated claims is that the coronavirus is a biological weapon deployed by the West:  it is said to have been developed by NATO or in a lab. Or the virus would have been caused by migrants. The claims are spread through social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Reddit in different languages. Kremlin-minded media companies portray control of the outbreak as a narrative of contradictions between the East and the West, the researchers said, highlighting how Russia copes better with the outbreak.

For example, messages have been sent to Italians to convince them that the authorities are not controlling the pandemic. "That is how they try to create fear. Titles such as" The EU's ability to effectively deal with the virus are questionable "or" Italian doctors will select who lives or dies, as hospitals are unable to save all patients ”. It would eventually lead to the collapse of the European Union, reports say.

Especially the Spanish-speaking branch of the Russian state channel RT appears to be very active. Readers mainly read apocalyptic stories there. The report stresses also on how the Russian news sources insist continuously on how well Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin are coping with the crisis. To date, only 147 people have officially been infected with the corona virus. There was also only one corona victim in all of Russia: an elderly woman with a medical history. The actual figures are probably much higher.

"Virus from test lab in Wuhan"

Not only Europe warns against Russian disinformation. The US State Department had already done so at the end of February. Because no concrete evidence was presented at the time, Twitter and Facebook decided not to take measures to delete accounts, for example.

Ukrainian media and fact-checkers have also signaled an increase in disinformation from Russia. In particular, the story that the virus was created and spread through the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda appears to play a major role in this: their story was then taken over by other Russian media. Even the secretary of the Ukrainian Security Council claimed that the corona virus "leaked from a secret lab in Wuhan".

VRT NWS has also investigated how controversial Russian ideologist Alexandr Dugin (known for his close ties to the Kremlin) spreads disinformation through his website Geopolitica.  He sees the corona crisis as a conspiracy by the wealthy elite to institute global tyranny.

Russia denies

Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov firmly denies the claim that Russia wants to panic over the spread of the coronavirus in Europe and dismisses the reports as unfounded accusations.

Peskov points out that, according to him, specific examples are missing. "We are again talking about some groundless claims that in the current situation are likely to be the result of an anti-Russian obsession," Peskov said.

But Russian President Putin also previously complained that his country is itself the victim of fake news spread abroad. A Russian cyber security company reported, among other things, that social networks such as the UK were flooded with fake messages that thousands of Muscovites were infected with the corona virus.

I went back in to the older posts on the blog to double check something for the James question - it has been mentioned that he was training to be a cop before he got recruited and speakers like five languages ! Languages are Really Hard and it wasn't the standard westen Europe languages that you do in school, it was like mandarin that he probably learnt specifically for the job and going undercover. Basically, I think he's pretty damn smart even when he's acting like a bit of an idiot.

Yeah, you’re right about that. The only language James learnt at school was Italian. The rest of the languages he chose because they were ones Carol didn’t speak and wanted to make sure they were covered. He had to do one in training and I think he picked German for that. The rest were for the job.
