my plus one atsumu miya x fem!reader (fluff) m.list | wc: 871 | prompts: fake dating
    "just act natural!"
"anyone acting natural wouldn't be dating you-"
"okay, could you just shut up then?" you question, arm wrapped around atsumu's, a fake smile gracing your face.
the two of you enter your cousin's wedding reception, the old italian atmosphere garnering a romantic feeling... if you were with anyone other than atsumu miya. the inside of your elbow interlocks with his arm, hand resting in front of your ensemble. "you are the one who invited me, remember?" he whispers into your ear, keeping an obnoxious smile on his face.
"only because you were the only one in town after the tournament," you whisper back, giving your other cousins a wave, trying to hold your smile.
he turns to look at you, stopping you in your tracks. his eyes are wide as his hand rests below your elbow, fingers grazing your upper arm. biting his lip, the tips of his shoes touching yours, “you’re such a charmer.. now if you really want to convince them, you’ll let me wrap my arm around your waist.”
“taking this boyfriend role a little seriously, aren’t you?” you question, narrowing your eyes, hands reaching up to his biceps.
atsumu shrugs, raising his right hand to push back pieces of your hair. “only as much as you are sweetheart,” he looks past you and at your cousins, the bride included.
they’re standing together in a group, chowing down on hors d’oeuvres featuring classic italian flavors. the maid of honor leans against the table, eyes wide open as she spots the two of you together. inciting a domino effect, she alerts the rest of the bridal party to your presence, making note of the man attached to your hip.
atsumu smirks to himself as you roll your eyes. trying to play it up, his hand moves smoothly from your elbow to your back, pushing you slightly towards him. “now, your cousins are watching, you want to go say hi?” he smiles, raising his eyebrows, reveling in the acting performance of a lifetime.
“oh i would love to hon,” you tilt your head, tapping his chest with your hand before turning around to meet your fate.
atsumu’s hand stays on your back, lowering only slightly to reach your waist. the rest of the reception runs smoothly, people dancing on the floor, the groom talking to a few of his friends. walking up to your cousin, you hold out your hands, moving into a hug, “alisa! i have to say, your wedding was beautiful. and this reception? i’m so happy i was able to come.”
“i’m so happy you could too y/n! god i haven’t seen you in forever, and especially not since you’ve gotten with your boyfriend… who is??” she sets down her plate onto the table, hands clasped together with an excited smile on her face.
“atsumu miya, you might’ve seen me, i’m on japan’s national volleyball team. that’s actually how we met, right babe?” he squeezes you into his side, making sure your family can see just how ‘in love’ he is.
looking up at him, you purse your lips, sighing. “yes, i remember like it was yesterday. i was doing some paperwork for their team, and i ended up having to stay late. when someone,” you look up at him, a soft smile on your lips, “brought in some food, and offered it up. although, it wasn’t the perfect meet cute. he ended up spilling chili oil all over me.”
“to be fair, you were trying to take some of my food and i was just protecting it-”
“you had way more food than i did, besides, i know for a fact that the meal planner didn’t want you eating any of that because of the upcoming games,” you lean back, shaking your head.
the bridal party watches with amusement as you bicker, already acting like an old married couple. reaching her hand out, you grab ahold of alisa’s hand, giving her a soft smile, “okay okay, atsumu, would you mind getting us a few drinks so i could talk to my cousin?”
nodding his head, he lifts his hands up, “yes, i can definitely get those for you. i’m assuming from the punch table. have fun babe.”
watching as he walks away, alisa immediately starts badgering you for more information. your first thoughts of him, how long you’ve been together, whether you’ve gone to any of games as his ‘girlfriend’ yet. the question that stood out to you the most is when she asks ‘do you love him?’.
“love him? i don’t know, maybe? i mean he annoys the living hell out of me. and i probably won’t tell him this, at least not till we’re dating longer, but i do think i care about him. in our own way, you know?” you shrug, rubbing your thumb against her hand, “but enough about me, how’s it feel to be married to the love of your life?”
atsumu peeks over at the two of you, holding a few glasses on a tray he was able to steal from catering. listening to the sweet sounds of you figuring out that maybe you don’t actually hate atsumu for the night he ruined your favorite sweater…

an exposed love story | I.Y.
A/N: It's been a while since l've been in the writing scene but l've been wanting to go back into it for a while but didn't really have anyone in mind to write about. But recently, l've been quite hooked onto the olympics scene and a few of the athletes ended up catching my interest and so this short imagine is based off the person who caught my attention.
The story is a mix between my love for the k-pop (as I have done some writings from the past) and the volleyball scene - particularly the Japanese men's volleyball team
Hope you enjoy my first piece of writing in a while!
Genre: Hidden Love, Highschool Friends to Lovers, Fluff
Characters: Ishikawa Yuki x Reader (Reader has a last name)
POV: Third Person to Your POV
- ft. Dokyeom, Mingyu, Seungkwan from SVT, Sana from Twice, and JPN Men's Volleyball Team
Word Count: 2.3k (A short imagine / one-shot)
———————
In the bustling city of Tokyo, where the neon lights danced and the energy never seemed to wane, Jeon Y/N and Ishikawa Yuki first met. Y/N, a bright and ambitious high school student with dreams of becoming a renowned idol, was instantly captivated by Yuki's quiet determination and athletic prowess. Yuki, a promising young volleyball player with a serious yet kind demeanor, found Y/N's charisma and passion irresistible.
Their connection was immediate and profound. As high school friends, they spent time together whenever they could, sharing dreams and supporting each other through their busy schedules. Y/N's path soon took her to Korea, where she pursued a successful career in the music industry. Yuki joined Japan's national volleyball team and played for various Italian clubs during the offseason, leading to a long-distance relationship that was both challenging and rewarding.
Despite the distance, their bond remained unshakeable. Y/N's songs began to feature subtly in Yuki's team practice vlogs and official matches, leading to murmurs among fans. Although neither Y/N nor Yuki publicly confirmed their relationship, their connection was evident in these small but meaningful gestures.
One evening, during a casual brunch get-together with, Seungkwan, Dokyeom, and Mingyu at a cozy café, the topic of your "relationship" with Yuki came up.
"Have you noticed that song from the Japan volleyball team's vlogs?" Seungkwan asked, leaning forward with curiosity. "It sounds a lot like something Y/N/N would sing~" ending his sentence in a teasing manner.
Quickly turning towards Seungkwan surprised like a deer in headlights, you curse in your mind forgetting that he always keeps himself updated in the volleyball scene as an avid-fan of the sport. You should have known sooner or later that one of your friends would found out, so you reply with a nervous chuckle, "Really? I hadn't heard that.”
Mingyu, always ready to stir the pot, added with a grin, "There's been chatter about you and someone in Italy. Care to share?"
Your face turned a light shade of pink as you tried to compose yourself. "There might be some truth to it, but let's just keep it between us for now."
Dokyeom placed a supportive hand on your shoulder. "Whatever's happening, we've got your back. You don't have to go through this alone."
After years of navigating the complexities of a long-distance relationship, you and Yuki finally found a moment in your busy schedules for a short getaway. Quickly deciding on Florence, a city that seemed to perfectly embody your dreams of romance and history. As you and Yuki walk through its cobblestone streets, exploring its art-filled museums and enjoying its quaint cafes, you find yourselves enveloped in the very essence of a long-awaited reunion. The city’s timeless charm mirrored the depth of your connection, making the time together both magical and unforgettable.
The days were filled with joy as you two explored the city's narrow streets, visited the Uffizi Gallery, and enjoyed meals at quaint trattorias. Wandering hand-in-hand, savoring the rare opportunity to be together without the constant scrutiny of your public lives.
One sunny afternoon, you find a charming café deeply hidden in the alleyways, you look at Yuki with a bright smile. "How about we sit here? I've heard their espresso and tiramisu is fantastic! Plus, since it is a bit secluded we won't have to worry too much about someone spotting us."
Yuki’s eyes twinkled with affection. "That sounds perfect. I trust your taste completely."
As you settled at your table, enjoying your coffee and each other's company, a sudden burst of camera flashes disrupted your peaceful afternoon. Paparazzi, ever on the lookout for a story, had caught you in your private moment. You exchanged startled glances with Yuki, realizing your carefully planned escape had been compromised.
Looking around frantically, you tried to find a waiter who could help you find a more private spot. Yuki, his face hardened with determination, grasped your hands and said, "Hey, look at me. Don’t panic. It’s okay, what happened has already happened. Let’s try to enjoy the rest of our day. We will deal with the consequences later."
You squeezed his hand, offering a reassuring smile as you settled your anxiety and nerves. "Okay. We’ve faced challenges before, so we can handle this together."
Despite your efforts to stay calm, the media frenzy that followed made your vacation far from relaxing.
The morning after the photos were leaked, you and Yuki awoke to a media storm. Dispatch had published an exclusive article titled "An Italian Getaway: The Secret Romance Between Korean Idol and Japanese Volleyball Captain!" The article featured several intimate photos of you and Yuki from your Italian vacation, and it didn’t take long for the story to spread across various media platforms.
Your phone buzzed incessantly with notifications. You felt a mix of anxiety and resolve as you read messages from friends. Seungkwan, Dokyeom, and Mingyu all reached out in your group chat.
Seungkwan's message appeared first: "Y/N, are you really dating my volleyball idol? Is it true about you and Ishikawa? You know we’re here for you, no matter what."
You took a deep breath and typed a response. "Yes, it’s true. Yuki and I have been together for a long time. We kept it private because of our careers, but now that it’s out, we’re ready to face it."
Dokyeom's message followed quickly: "I’m glad you’re open about it. We’re all here for you. How are you holding up?"
You sighed, feeling a mix of relief and worry. "It’s overwhelming, but I’m managing. Thanks for your support."
On Yuki’s side, his teammates in Japan were also reacting. His phone buzzed with messages from their group chat, which was now exploding with notifications.
[Group Chat: Japan Volleyball Team]
Ran: "Congratulations on your relationship, Captain! Can I ask for a favor, can you ask Y/N for an autograph? I need it for my collection!"
Otsuka: "Seriously, congrats, Captain! You’ve always been such a mystery with your personal life. It’s great to see you so happy."
Yamauchi: "Yuki, about time you got into a relationship. We were worried you’d stay single forever!"
Nishida: "Wow, I can’t believe it’s Y/N. That’s huge! I’m sure you both make a great couple."
Yuki read the messages with amusement. He scoffed at the playful jabs but appreciated the genuine congratulations from his teammates. Smiling, he typed a response: "Thank you for the messages, guys. I’ll definitely ask Y/N for an autograph for you, Ran."
He hit send, shaking his head with a chuckle. The reactions from his teammates were a comforting reminder of the support he had, even amidst the chaos of the media frenzy. Their messages provided relief and laughter, helping him navigate the challenging situation with camaraderie and humor.
As the Paris 2024 Olympics approached, Yuki dedicated himself fully to his training, and you prepared for your own activities. You had planned to make a meaningful public statement after the Olympics, marking both your relationship and Yuki’s achievements.
When Yuki’s team won the gold medal after weeks of challenges and hardships, the moment was both triumphant and emotionally charged. You felt an overwhelming sense of pride and joy. Your shared victory was a testament to your resilience and love.
Later that night, you and Yuki sat in your hotel room, the weight of the day’s events sinking in. You were preparing a special Instagram post. "Are you ready for this?" you asked Yuki, your voice filled with a mix of excitement and nerves.
Yuki, his gaze soft and full of affection, nodded. "Yes. It’s time for the fans to know the truth. I want to celebrate our journey."
You uploaded a series of images to your Instagram story. The first few photos were nostalgic, showing your high school days, candid vacation moments, and various milestones in your relationship. The final image was the most powerful: you and Yuki in the now-empty Olympic volleyball arena, sharing a sweet kiss on his cheek with your arms propped around his neck, with Yuki holding onto the gold medal in one hand and your waist in the other.
The caption read: "Happy 10 years, my captain ♡ to many more years with you"
The post quickly went viral, with fans from both Korea and Japan, as well as across the globe, flooding your feeds with messages of congratulations and support. A hashtag for your relationship trended on Twitter, symbolizing your love story and the strength of your bond.
You were inundated with heartfelt messages from friends and fans. Sana from Twice reached out with a warm message: "I’m so happy for you both! Your love story is truly inspiring. Congratulations!"
You responded with gratitude: "Thank you, Unnie. Your support means so much to us!"
The final show of your Japan tour was set to take place at the iconic Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, a grand venue that held a special place in your heart. The stage was set, the lights were dazzling, and the anticipation in the air was palpable. This concert marked the culmination of a successful tour, and you wanted it to be unforgettable.
As you prepared to go on stage, your heart raced with excitement. You had planned something special—not just for your fans, but for Yuki. The Japanese volleyball team had been given special VIP seats for the concert from your management company, and Yuki was among them. You wanted to honor Yuki and your relationship in front of thousands of devoted fans, and you had a surprise planned.
The concert began with an electrifying opening number, your powerful voice filling the stadium as you sang your heart out. The crowd’s energy was contagious, and you fed off their enthusiasm, performing with an intensity that matched your excitement.
Midway through the concert, during a particularly emotional ballad, you signaled to your camera crew. You had a special request that you hoped would add a personal touch to the evening. The crew quickly understood and prepared for the transition.
As the song reached its crescendo, you gestured towards the camera with a bright smile. "We have a very special guest here tonight, and I’d like to share that with you all," you announced through your mic, your voice full of emotion.
The camera panned away from the stage and began to move towards the special VIP balcony, where Yuki and the volleyball team were seated. The crowd’s murmur grew into excited whispers as the camera drew closer. Your fans recognized Yuki and the volleyball team, and the energy in the stadium surged with excitement.
You took a deep breath, your voice steady but filled with warmth. "I want to take a moment to thank someone very special to me. Yuki, you’ve been my rock and my greatest support throughout this journey. This night is dedicated to you and our love."
As you sang the final notes of the ballad, your eyes locked with Yuki’s. The connection between you was palpable, and the sincerity in your gaze spoke volumes. The audience, moved by the gesture, responded with cheers and applause that echoed throughout the stadium.
The camera then returned to you on stage, capturing your radiant smile and the way you seemed to glow with happiness. You continued to perform with renewed energy, your heart lightened by the visible support from Yuki and the volleyball team.
After the concert, you and your bandmates were backstage, basking in the afterglow of a successful show. The atmosphere was jubilant, filled with laughter and congratulations. Yuki and his teammates made their way backstage to meet you, and the reunion was filled with warmth and affection.
Yuki pulled you into a tight embrace, his eyes shining with pride. "Amore mio, you were amazing tonight. I’m so proud of you."
You looked up at him with a beaming smile. "Thank you, Yuki. Having you here means everything to me. I wanted to share this moment with you."
As you stood together, surrounded by friends and colleagues, Sana and Momo from Twice approached with a smile. "The concert was incredible, Y/N. And you two looked so happy together. I’m really glad to see you both celebrating."
You hugged both of them warmly. "Thank you, Sana. Your support has been so meaningful to us."
As the evening wound down, you and Yuki took a quiet moment together, stepping outside to enjoy the cool night air. You stood on a balcony overlooking the city, the lights of Yokohama twinkling below.
"This tour has been incredible," you said, leaning against the railing. "But tonight was really special."
Yuki nodded, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and placing a sweet kiss on your forehead. "It was perfect. Thank you for making me a part of it."
You rested your head on Yuki’s shoulder, feeling a deep sense of contentment. "Here’s to many more moments like this."
As you stood together, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of you and the promise of a bright future. Your love had endured through the highs and lows, and now, with your relationship celebrated publicly, you looked forward to what lay ahead, knowing that you could face any challenge together.
Your journey, marked by love, dedication, and resilience, continued to inspire many. And as you embraced the future, you and Yuki knew that your love was stronger than ever, ready to shine in the spotlight and beyond.

(tiktok transcript: Next up, is Charles Leclerc - who is currently dating Y/N Y/LN, best known for her position as middle blocker. Y/N is a player in the Turkish team, 'Vakifbank', and due to the national team season, she is currently away with the Turkish National Team. As one of the most followed volleyball players in the world, Y/N has been awarded the 'Best Middle Blocker' award from VNL two years in a row - quite the achievement to receive against tens of teams and hundred of players at the young age of only 23. I first met Y/N at the Turkish Grand Prix in 2020, where she was the person to award the Pirelli Pole Position award to Lance Stroll in a turn of events. She was there as the guest of Mercedes, as she is one of the athletes associated with the brand. Charles and Y/N met in 2020 in the Turkish Grand Prix, and the pair has kept in touch and became close friends, eventually coming out as a couple in the summer of the 2021 season. Though we don't get to see Y/N in the paddock very often, she is a delight when she has the time to come and support her boyfriend in the Ferrari garage - a great loss for Toto Wolff, I presume.)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
✹.⠀⠀،،⠀ABOUT MICHAELA SOMMERS⠀⸻⠀australian-born formula one driver, michaela sommers is one of the most electrifying young racers to grace the sport. as the first female driver since lella lombardi, sommers has been smashing records and solidifying her impact on the sport since her debut in 2019. currently driving as the second seat for aston martin, michaela sommers has achieved a total of six race wins to accompany thirty-four podiums and sponsorships from louis vuitton, skims, and mattel.
Tumblr media
✹.⠀⠀،،⠀ABOUT GUIDO MAROTTA⠀⸻⠀michaela's manager, guido marotta, has been a consistent face during the driver's upper-level career. guido took over for michaela's uncle, travis sommers, in 2016 before michaela's second season in formula two with prema racing. known as the "shadowy figure behind the rise of michaela sommers" marotta has been lauded for managing sommers' career. guido is recognized among the driver's fans as being the perfect match for her ambitions. more controversially, guido has publicly called out teams, drivers, and sponsors who have been less than fair to michaela for her gender and frequently clashes with the fia.
date of birth: february 02, 1976 hometown: venice, italy ethnicity: italian nationality: italian languages: italian, english height: 5'11" (181 cm) active since: 2016 faceclaim: raoul bova
Tumblr media
✹.⠀⠀،،⠀ABOUT LUIZA MELO⠀⸻⠀michaela's trainer, luiza melo, is known for plenty outside of being part of the team. as a three-time olympic beach volleyball medalist, luiza knows a thing or two about the importance of health for a successful career. having been michaela's trainer since her move to mclaren in 2021, luiza immediately began working to increase the driver's stamina and strength, drawing praise for the noticeable difference in her performance. as an integral part of michaela's routine, luiza travels with the fellow australian to every race. the two have become extraordinarily close in recent years with luiza moving in just doors down from michaela's high-rise monaco apartment.
date of birth: january 14, 1990 hometown: adelaide, australia ethnicity: brazilian nationality: australian languages: english, portuguese height: 6'0" (182 cm) active since: 2021 faceclaim: lais ribeiro

✹.⠀⠀،،⠀ABOUT BEATA GASPARRO⠀⸻⠀michaela's press officer, beata gasparro, is her team's most visible member. forever glued to her side at every race weekend since joining michaela during her time at alfa romeo, beata has a reputation for being protective over the driver who she considers to be one of her own. sommers' impeccable media training is largely attributed to gasparro who has makes sure to keep her client in the spotlight all without giving away too much. if there is any question about beata's love for michaela, her instagram (full of pictures of the driver alongside beata's family) proves how preciously she holds the australian in her heart.
date of birth: november 27, 1965 hometown: genoa, italy ethnicity: italian nationality: italian languages: italian, english, spanish, french height: 5'9" (175 cm) active since: 2019 faceclaim: monica bellucci
Tumblr media
✹.⠀⠀،،⠀ABOUT ISMAEL GANEM⠀⸻⠀michaela's race engineer, ismael ganem, is perhaps every fan's favorite member of her team. affectionately referred to as "izzie", the egyptian-british engineer was a driver in his own merit, having raced in both british formula and formula three before leaving to pursue education. ganem first worked with michaela during her successful formula three season. though both would leave the team at the end of the 2015 season, michaela to move to gp2 and ismael to join aston martin's engineering team, they would be reunited in 2023. famously, michaela claims ismael was the one to convince her manager, guido, to pursue a seat with aston martin after a series of fiery disputes with mclaren. the pairing of izzie and mickey has been exceptionally successful with ganem even joking he would follow sommers to whatever team she may move to in the future.
date of birth: may 22, 1971 hometown: london, england ethnicity: egyptian nationality: british languages: english, arabic height: 5'10" (178 cm) active since: 2015, 2023-present faceclaim: ahmed ezz

olympic volleyball round-up
sad that this is possibly my last olympic vball post :(
my predictions:
following vnl i felt italy and brazil were strong contenders for gold and i maintained that thru semis
for bronze i was thinking poland or china tbh so it was surprising these teams didnt make it past qfs. i also had hopes for japan and turkiye- turkiye did indeed make it to the bronze medal match. usa i wasnt sure about because we havent seen a stable squad from them until the olympic games and even then they were still messing around with their outsides, but as former gold medalists i knew they had it in them
quarters and semis
italy and brazil making it to semis was obvious but i was surprised the usa beat poland and was undecided about china/turkiye.
for semis, i kinda knew italy would win but i really thought brazil was gonna take it- and they almost did.
thoughts on our top 4 teams:
4. turkiye: this team has had an interesting year. they got gold at 2023 vnls but weren't able to defend it in 2024. their biggest asset right now is melissa vargas joining them, but one player alone cant carry the team. i think the injury of gunes, baladin, and then ozbay hurt them, but we got to see more of their bench! i personally liked seeing how different the chemistry could be with different outsides, even if it didn't always lead to the results they wanted. speaking of outsides i wonder how they will use karakurt moving forward, at first they had her continue in opposite with that double switch but then moved to playing her outside and then the last few matches just not at all. if nothing else she is the teams mood maker! ive heard rumors but seen no confirmation but if erdem retires well be looking at a fairly young team going forward, it will be interesting to watch.
3. brazil: they played so well in vnl and so well in pool phases that i was almost sure theyd win the semis. i think it was down to gabi not scoring as highly as she usually has and the unforced errors that sometimes pile up for them. i still maintain that i wish they were in the gold medal match cause i think brazil was the only team that could have stretched it to at least 4 sets if not a 5 set thriller. they did go home with bronze so cant be too sad for them lol. the team was interesting considering the age and experiance mixed with players like ana christina and bergmann. despite the drama with the fans i really do like watching brazil play, especially gabi- the peoples princess of volleyball. i wonder how much of the national team will continue on and how many will retire.
2. usa: did NOT see them getting silver coming based on their performance the last few years. usa has a lot of star players but the past few seasons it felt like they werent working together as a team, and i dont mean this as in mentality they clearly have good comraderie, just in their play style. some of this might come from them not having the steady starting roster other teams have, but im not a professional. still to be able to get it together and make it to the final round is impressive, they couldnt defend their gold but silver is still something! im excited for the next generation thats coming up and to see if the lovb league changes how the national team plays
1. italy: going into this tournament i think we all knew who would get gold, and not jut because they got it 2 months ago at vnl. this italian team is the strongest ive ever seen them. they werent bad in 2023, but i think they were missing egonu and her returning has brought everything we knew she could bring! idk if it was having to play without her or something in the water or what but this italian team all around is much stronger from the setting to blocking to defense they just play like the best team in the world should. lets see if anyone can challenge them next year.
edit: I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT DREAM TEAM
dream team
egonu as best opposite and mvp, ikdfr. orro best setter again was earned! de gennaro best libero makes sense. danesi and ogbogu best middles was earned! SYLLA AND GABI BEST OUTSIDES IS LIKE MY DREAM COME TRUE was literally thinking during the game id want them as my opposites asdjfaklsfj.
i dont have a lot a lot to say, just that this tournament is bittersweet. 1- its over too fast. 2- were saying goodbye to a lot of really talented players (some will continue on with club tho!) and its always sad when you realize that the teams you just watched will never play that way again. looking forward to club starting soon tho!
to anyone who actually reads these i hope you enjoy them, and learn to enjoy the wonders of live volleyball too. im really excited that the us is getting its own league and i hope to see a game in person even tho ill have to drive 12+ hours or 20+ hours by train (amtrak wtf). im also excited that the college volleyball scene is picking up in my area, i hope to go support them as well.
until next tournament 🫡

[ad_1] As the volleyball game neared its end, thousands of fans watching on giant screens in an Istanbul park rose to their feet and fell silent. The ball soared, a Turkish player set it up near the net, and her teammate spiked it. Her Italian opponents blocked the shot but knocked the ball out of bounds, handing victory to the Turks and causing the crowd to erupt into chants of “Turkey! Turkey! Turkey!”The nail-biter victory on Friday by Turkey’s national women’s volleyball team in the Women’s European Volleyball Championship was the most recent conquest by the country’s most successful major sports team, a record that has turned it into a rare source of national pride that holds appeal across the country’s social divides. While some ultraconservatives have attacked the women as an affront to Islamic values, their fans laud them as paragons of female empowerment in a country where many women feel they have yet to achieve social equality. And the team’s successes are a welcome bright spot for Turks struggling with sky-high inflation, political polarization and a slow recovery from devastating earthquakes in February that killed more than 50,000 people.Affectionately referred to as “the Sultans of the Net,” the team won the Volleyball Nations League championship in July in Arlington, Texas, and became the world’s top rated women’s national team, according to FIVB, the sport’s international governing body. On Sunday, they face Serbia in the final match of the European championship in Brussels. At home, the team’s games are aired live by the state broadcaster and its players exude star power. Legions of followers on social media celebrate their accomplishments, track their frequent hair-color changes and speculate about their romantic entanglements.Corporate sponsorships and state support have flowed in. In 2021, when Turkey granted citizenship to the Cuban-born player Melissa Vargas, she received her new Turkish ID card from none other than President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.“They are fighters,” said Ceren Duyan, a biologist at a biotech company who watched Friday’s game in the park. “When we see women do good things in sports or anywhere else, we see that we too can be powerful.”The volleyballers’ rise comes amid an international reckoning with how female athletes are treated compared with their male counterparts. Last month, the head of the Spanish soccer federation was suspended after giving a female player an unwanted kiss on the lips. In July, the BBC apologized after one of its reporters asked the captain of the Moroccan national women’s soccer team if any of its players were gay.Turkey’s team has largely avoided such controversies, although the players’ personal styles have linked them to some of Turkey’s deepest divisions. While its people are predominantly Muslim, Turkey was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, its first president, as a secular state. Much of Turkish politics revolves around struggles between those who treasure the country’s secular legacy and those pressing to expand Islam’s role in public life. The latter camp includes Mr. Erdogan, Turkey’s predominant politician for two decades. The players are clearly in the former camp. They do not cover their hair or wear clothing that conceals their bodies, as most devout Muslim women do. Instead, they appear in the standard uniform of shorts and tank tops, and some sport tattoos. Ms. Vargas, the team’s top scorer, has recently appeared on court with her hair dyed electric blue or bleached blond, with a blue lightning bolt over her ear. After a victory on Wednesday against Poland, one player, Zehra Gunes, told Turkish reporters that the team was advancing Ataturk’s vision for Turkey.“As Turkish women, we try to be role models for future generations by holding a light on the path that Ataturk showed,” she said.Another star player, Ebrar Karakurt, received floods of hateful and homophobic messages after posting photographs of herself on social media in affectionate poses with other women, and an Islamist newspaper called her “a national shame.”In 2021, when the team was competing in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, a prominent preacher sharply criticized the team for not adhering to his conception of how a Muslim woman should behave.“Girl of Islam! You are not the sultan of the courts; you are the sultan of faith, virtue, chastity and decency,” the preacher, Ihsan Senocak, wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.A spokesman for Turkey’s volleyball federation eventually responded to the hubbub, praising Ms. Karakurt for having the “the spirit of a fighter to represent her country.”“Everyone’s private life concerns them only,” the spokesman said. “All the rest is hokum.”Ms. Karakurt has recently struck back at her critics in her own way.Last week, an X user named Abdulhamid responded to one of her posts, saying, “As the Muslim Turkish nation, we continue to put up with you.”After Friday’s victory, Ms. Karakurt posted a photograph of herself holding a sign that read, “Cut the crap, Abdulhamid.”The team’s successes resonate because Turkey has long seen sports as a way to assert itself globally.“It was always the motive of Turkish sports to be successful in international encounters to prove that we are legitimate — as powerful, as successful, equals to our Western peers,” said Daghan Irak, a senior lecturer in media communication at the University of Huddersfield in Britain. “It is a very important part of our society’s psyche in terms of sports.”Mr. Erdogan and his government may not appreciate everything about the team’s public profile, Mr. Irak said, but the president most likely appreciates their inspirational value.“Obviously, Erdogan is more interested in the national pride this team generates than the lifestyle questions,” Mr. Irak said.Mr. Erdogan, an avid soccer player in his younger years, has not attended any of the team’s games. But he did call Eda Erdem, the team’s captain, after its first game in the Tokyo Olympics to say he had been watching.“You made us sentimental, you made us teary,” Mr. Erdogan said, passing his greetings “to all the girls.”After the team won a tournament this summer, an opposition lawmaker, Gulcan Kis, filed an inquiry to the Parliament asking why Mr. Erdogan’s sports minister had not attended any games and suggested it was to avoid angering conservatives.“Is the targeting of the national women’s volleyball team by religious scholars the reason for your absence from the final game?” Ms. Kis asked. But the squabbles have not hurt the popularity of women’s volleyball, or the vast infrastructure supporting it. The national women’s league is hugely competitive and rich in sponsorships. And the Education Ministry runs a “Sultans of Tomorrow” program to introduce the game to girls in provincial cities. The success of the national team has attracted a new generation of girls to the game, said Neslihan Demir, who retired from the team in 2017.“All the little girls in Turkey want to play volleyball now since they are watching their big sisters as role models,” she said. The players’ broad social acceptance has encouraged parents to let their daughters play, too, she said.Ms. Demir recalled meeting a family who asked her whether their 9-year-old daughter could become a Sultan of the Net.“Start at once,” she told them.Safak Timur contributed reporting. Gabi hits the ground running as Brazil top Italy in Bangkok
Tumblr media
Brazilian superstar Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães had an eventful debut in the Volleyball Nations League 2023 as her national team heavily relied on her to defeat Italy in a five-set battle in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday.   The rematch of last year’s VNL gold medal match was a rollercoaster, which ended with a 3-2 (26-28, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10) victory of the South Americans over the Europeans at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium.   Watch Volleyball Nations League 2023 live on VBTV The result has made a huge impact on both teams’ aspirations in VNL 2023 as, with just three more Preliminary Phase matches to be played, Brazil are virtually guaranteed in the Finals, currently standing in third place with seven wins (20 points), while the Italians, ranked eighth with five wins (13 points), will need to fight for their spot until the end.   After sitting out of the first two weeks of the VNL 2023, the 29-year-old Gabi needed just one match to prove her importance to the team, leading the Brazilian victory against the defending champions with impressive 25 points (24 kills, one block), including the game-winner.   “It feels amazing to be back,” Gabi commented. “I was so excited to come back, especially here in Thailand, where the fans love volleyball so much. We knew this was going to be a very difficult match. I felt that we started well, but we missed some good opportunities to win the first set. Our blocking and defense weren’t working well at the beginning, but we had the patience to adjust it. Once we fixed that, were more aggressive with our serving and limited our errors, the game got better for us. I’m proud of the team because we never gave up and this is a very important victory for us.” Olympic medallist opposite Rosamaria Montibeller also had a brilliant performance against the Italians, delivering 21 points, with 18 kills, one ace and two blocks. Middle blockers Ana Carolina ‘Carol’ da Silva and Thaisa Menezes also reached double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively.   Outside hitter Francesca Villani had a great performance for Italy, leaving the court with 21 points (19 kills, two blocks). The Europeans also saw some of their young players step up, with 23-year-old opposite Sylvia Nwakalor adding another 21 points and 20-year-old outside hitter Loveth Omoruyi tallying 14.   Volleyball Nations League 2023: full schedule and results   The third day of competition in Bangkok will bring three matches, with Croatia and the Netherlands meeting first, at 13:00 local time (06:00 UTC), followed by Brazil and Canada at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC) and Thailand and Türkiye at 20:30 local time (13:30 UTC). Volleyball large numbers, membership boom in Italy
Blue effect. Italian volleyball records a boom in membership in the wake of the successes of the national teams. First the double victory at the 2021 European Championships, for both men and women in the same year, then the triumph at the World Cup for Fefè De Giorgi’s boys and the first Nations League conquered by the girls coached by Davide Mazzanti. Not to mention the myriad of international…
