so i knew there would be some exploration of fame, but an concept album literally about halsey was absolutely not expected at all! Looking forward to the ashley/halsey contrast, songs that talk about her relationship with fans (bc things have been weird recently) and the "what if". Really looking forward to 80s (aksjs not just bc 8 but like. I just know she'll knock it out of the park) and LOVE LOVE LOVE the title??? Halsey's creativity and talent is so incredible it's baffling to me that TGI isn't like. Trending all over the world already. (although im down to gatekeep lol)

Thank you so much for the ask! In response to this ask game! I am putting the answers below the cut! Please be aware of mentions of character death and past character death.

🍀  - What originally inspired the OC?

To be frank, my love for Zach inspired Violet, I “met” him on March 16th, 2021 and life has never been the same, lol. And it was that love for Zach that led me to A03…and Violet’s true inspiration: Violet was initially inspired by a story written by one of my dear friends @m0thisonfire. I read M0th’s Zach reader insert story Country Style, and I was floored (seriously check this story out if you are not familiar with it, it is amazing y’all).

At the time M0th had not updated for a bit, and I started wondering what it would be like if I had a character like that with Zach. I started thinking about a character that was named Violet, but she was much different than the Violet we now know.

Violet originally was one of Zach’s devoted fans. She had been obsessed with him for years and happened to meet him through Donita (I actually have a one shot about this, I could post it if you all would like!). Zach realized that she was infatuated with him and he offered her a position as his assistant. This first form of Violet was “born” around April 2021. I know this because the first image I made of her with Memoji was dated April 24, 2021!

By July 4, 2021, the day our daughter should have been born, I’d created Violet’s current form (well very close to it):

So it’s like…Violet was born on that day, she came into my life the day our daughter should have, and that was not coincidence in my mind…it just makes me so emotional…but I digress…

The story stayed liked this for a while, obsessed fangirl turned assistant, but around August of 2021 two things happened. One: I started thinking of a friendship between Zach and Violet, a friendship that would lead to a romance - that’s how Violet and Zach met at science camp. Two: I became obsessed with Halsey’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power Album. The nature of Zach and Violet’s romance (and Violet’s personal struggles) is heavily inspired by the If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power album. I think it was at this point that Violet became more of a self insert than a strict OC.

I knew from this point that Violet was going to be a decisive factor throughout Zach’s life. I knew they were going to go through some hardships before they finally became a couple. But I knew, from the first time I wrote about them at science camp that they were going to have a soulmate bond that would defy all odds: they were going to make it together.

A bit of a side note, but….Their story was originally going to be entitled If I Can’t Have Power, I Want Love. It was going to be a reimagining of Halsey’s IICHLIWP album, and it still technically is, but the one thing my ex did for me was give me the title of my story. He said it should be Wild Violet, pulling Wild from Wild Kratts…but it became Wild Violets because Zach and Violet are…Wild Violets (this will make more sense later in the story, I promise).

🍎  - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

Violet had a very strong and positive relationship with her parents. While they were alive, they were always there for Violet and helped her strive to achieve the best in life and be the best person she could be. They never said a harsh word to her (unless necessary for discipline), they never argued in front of her, they never made her feel as if she was not good enough. Violet was able to talk to her parents about anything: they had no secrets. They supported her in all ways and loved her unconditionally, and Violet felt the same way about them.

When Violet lost her parents the transition was very difficult for her: she went from being an only child with loving parents who spoiled, supported, and nurtured her to being an orphan raised by her aunt. But there was a negative side to Violet’s relationship with her parents, and this showed through after their passing: They always wanted the best for her, and pushed her to achieve the best in life. So, they impacted her so much that from the time of their death (when she was 11) until she started working for Zach (when she was 20), she did everything she could that she thought would please them.

She got a degree her parents always said they wanted her to get, she took classes in high school and college her parents would have wanted her to take. She threw herself into academics to please them, not wanting to disappoint them.

But Zach helped her past this, Zach helped her realize that she had to do what felt right in her heart, not what her parents had wanted for her future. He helped her see that no matter what, her parents wanted the best for her, and that meant following her heart. He didn’t realize that this advice would lead to their future together.

💎  - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

Wellllllll….The short answer is yes. I can’t give too much away, but I know how Wild Violets ends, and Violet’s death is part of that. Rest assured she will not be killed off any time soon. This is a lonnngggggg time coming! And it’s not a sad moment, it will be a happy moment. This scene has been imbedded in my mind for so long, and each time I think of it I want to cry happy tears 🥹.

tell me abt the gasoline jjk wip 🙏

GLADLY.

It all started by listening to Halsey's Badlands album for the umpteenth time and there was just something about Gasoline that suddenly hit different. It gave such distinct apocalyptic vibes that I was instantly inspired and tried to write down as much exposition and plot outlining as I could before I forgot.

And thus the jjk/itafushi vamp au was born!!!

The general premise is that vampires are the ruling class in the modern world. They take blood tithe offerings in order for humans to keep their lives. It's not exactly uncommon for vamps to kill recklessly, but this provides them with some incentive not to kill their main source of food with each feeding.

Megumi's role in this au is... complicated. He works as a poacher, a term used by humans and vampires alike to describe humans that hunt down other humans to feed to vampires. He's enlisted by different vampires and covens to find and capture humans that fit the specific desires of the vamp in question: blood type, gender, age, etc. Think of it as a fucked up comparison to how people have specific foods they prefer.

Now, Megumi isn't playing to role of the good guy in this fic, but he also doesn't want to be doing what he's doing. The only reason he does this is to keep his comatose sister alive and safe, as he's made a deal with coven leader Mahito to keep their hands off of the Fushiguro siblings if he hunts people down when they ask.

The essential plot is that one day Mahito has a specific request for Megumi: capture one boy and Megumi will no longer have to work as a traitor to humanity while still remaining safe from vampires. This boy, Itadori Yuuji, has stolen something from Mahito and he needs it back, but he also needs Yuuji alive so Megumi can't just kill him.

Megumi sees this as his one opportunity to get out of this shithole of a situation and hesitantly accepts the offer. He sets out to find this thief and ends up forming a friendship with him, first to try and gain Yuuji's trust so he can manipulate Yuuji into doing what he wants, but obviously things don't turn out the way he plans.

Yuuji is very much a mystery throughout the story, his background and motives hidden until much later in the story when shit goes down. He and Megumi have a sort of instant chemistry/connection in this fic that throws both of them off, as neither have much experience with forging human relationships. Their dynamic is something I'm so excited to explore!

And that's the basic plot! There's a lot more shit involved that I have and have not written out yet, but I am SO excited to finally get to this one aibtntfi is finished! I've been talking about this fic with @kattythingz forever and she knows how long this shit has been in works lol. The title of this fic has been at war in my head as I can't choose between a simple title like "Gasoline" or if I should go with the good old lyric title "my heart is gold, but my hands are cold", but honestly I'm sort of leaning towards the former? Feels more distinct that way and it's a bit different from my usual fic titles.

oh for sure! i reread a lot of my friends fics so anything by @cryptophasiac @lakemichiganlolita @petefromarma @buildarocketboys assume i have read it multiple times. and also go read their fics asap<3 as far as individual fics, i'm sure there are specific ones that i cannot think of right now lmao chances are if its in my bookmarks, i've read it a few times

flushed out ideas, not many lol my brain writes dialogue first, i'll hear someone say something and then write in my notes app so i can use it at a later time, but not actual ideas really

i really liked that all of the titles of my girlpete fics were from the same album "if i can't have love, i want power" by halsey (which is absolutely one of my All Time Absolute Favorite albums and can't recommend enough) but only 4/6 have titles w lyrics from that album. the other two are lyrics from "fall with me" by the wild reeds and "snake charmer" by blink 182 lmao

21. Have you ever deleted an entire scene after spending hours laboring over it? If so, why?

i've had full complete fics that have gotten chopped up and repurposed. what usually happens is there's something about the finished fic or scene that doesn't Scratch that Itch i want it too, so it'll get put on the back burner until i can take my favorite bits and pieces and use them somewhere else. as far as outright like, backspace delete a scene, no i don't think i ever have. i save every single draft of a fic just in case. sometimes i look through old drafts and end up finding something i like lol

i don't make moodboards i do have a girl out boy pinterest though which is mostly just like.. clothes lol

every single one lol before i post any fic, there's always a moment of anxiety like its going to go over super poorly or whatever. i've been super lucky that people tell me how much they enjoy my fics and it really does mean to world to hear bc i'm my own biggest critic lol but specifically? "i'd do anything to make you feel" because it was kind of the darkest fic i've posted? and "if everything could ever feel this way forever" bc it does have the non-con tag and i had never posted anything so dub/non-con lol

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

Hmmm, maybe Back Home. Most of my fics this year feel like mindless brain dumps, but this feels more like a complete work.

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

Probably hard feelings? It generally has a lot less hits and kudos than most my other work, probably because of it being angst without a happy ending (YET), but through the months it's gotten a lot of very sweet and heartfelt and/or heartbreaking comments.

Back Home also got a lot more feedback than expected - it was one of those venting fics that I didn't really expect to resonate and/or not be enjoyed by anyone else but me.

6. Favorite title you used

Hmmmmmmmm , I don't really think any of my titles this year stand out :p Maybe Catch of the Day, just bc it's so stupid.

7. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?

Most my titles from this year weren't song titles actually! Surprising, since I used to exclusively use song lyrics. There's only hard feelings (Lorde) and Can't Help It, I'm Obsessed (Sam Riggs).

(In 2021 we had Orla Gartland, Lizzo, Troye Sivan, Taylor Swift, Halsey and Maria Mena. Taylor and Maria were used twice: so they win. I think Maria would win overall for how many times her lyrics have been direct inspiration.)

10. What work was the quickest to write?

Probably a tie between the first chapter of hard feelings (started at like 10 in the morning when I was supposed to work, lol) - and Home (written while perched on the kitchen counter watching onions caramellize for onion soup). Both were around four hours, maybe one or two more for revisions.

Wait, actually, both chapters of Catch of the Day were mostly written in an hour or two each.

11. What work took you the longest to write?

Depends on whether you count hours spent on it, or stretch of time it took to finish it haha.

I do have wips I started last summer. Most of them are probably never gonna be anything. But I do have a wip that's almost done and I still intend to finish that I began... 14 months ago. oops.

But among published work - the ones that took the longest stretch of time is probably undertow and chapter two of hard feelings. According to docs, I began undertow on Christmas Eve last year (damn, didn't I have anything better to do?), so it tooooook... almost nine months? It's also kind of a mashup between three aimless wips that I eventually figured out went well enough to just patch together. hard feelings part two took seven months.

Most hours spent on it is harder to gauge, but maybe Can't Help It, I'm Obsessed. I remember I spent most my free time on it for maybe two-three weeks. (And then Annie kindly and graciously and perfectly finished it for me, thank god; I'd gotten myself in a real rut with it.)

16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?

Oh I dunno. Most are generic things like genre, established relationship and aged-up characters. The only one that sticks out is probably Alberto Scorfano has ADHD.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Prrrroooobably Trust Fall! I think it's just sweet and neat.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

That goes in cycles. Sometimes a playlist with classical music mixed in with movie soundtracks. Sometimes just whatever album I'm hooked on at the moment. I have some specific music for specific things, most are one song I'll loop for hours:

Downtown (feat Pri Pach) by BYOR, VINNE, Pri Pach. It's SO good for hyperfixating and writing smut 2am on a weekday. (Been a while since I did that, though.) There’s a reason it was my #1 on Spotify Wrapped last year, and #2 this year.

IDFC (feat. Ravenna Golden) by WHIPPED CREAM, Perto, Ravenna Golden. Same as Downtown. It tingles my brain.

River by Bishop Briggs. Great for emotionally charged and angsty smut.

I've spent HOOOOOURS listening to just 22:12 Until The End of Time from the Haven soundtrack while writing, no specific genre.

I generally listen a lot to Kevin Atwater to get into those Sad Boy Feelings (especially when writing about Alberto being too brainwashed by Christianity to admit his feelings for Luca. God I still love that AU, shame it's never getting finished.)

Lately I've been rewatching TV shows while writing, just to have something moving on the screen and something to listen to.

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

Hmm hmm hmmmmm, feel like I'm repeating myself here but Back Home and hard feelings. Both feel like is the first complete stories I wrote. Most my stuff is just scenes, this was the first that spanned over a longer time and connected themes together.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

Ahhh idk if I have the patience to reread all 50k I published this year, so I'm taking a couple that come to mind:

It’s stupid and predictable and sometimes Luca wonders when they’ll tire of this, when the intensity of the teenage crush will fade into something more mature, as his mother used to sigh when they were chasing each other’s tails around the bay. It’s been years, and he’s starting to suspect this is just what they’re like, perpetually snickering like kids breaking curfew, whispering secrets in a blanket fort and constantly one-upping each other. 

from Morning Routines. The whole fic is stupid, silly fun, but I feel like this passage sums up their relationship in a cute way.

You know him like the back of your hand, but he’s scarily good at slipping under your skin to hide. You convince yourself otherwise, but you can never really tell. Not really. But it’s yet another trust you have to fall into, accept the rush of gravity and hope he catches you. 

Trust Fall, chapter one

He looks at you, breathless and disbelieving. Disbelieving your love for him. When it’s the only thing you truly believe in, when nothing in this chaotic world makes sense without him, when it’s the seam keeping your life stitched together.  

You wish he could reach inside your chest, clench your heart tight and feel that it’s more his than your own. You wish you could put your mouth to his ear like a conch shell, and he’d hear the ceaseless waves that lap in the back of your mind whispering his name. You wish he could feel the magnetic pull from somewhere deep in your guts that makes you unable to stop orbiting him. 

You don’t dare imagine what would happen if he stopped letting you love him. 

Trust fall, chapter two

Both of these from Trust Fall are some of the rare instances that I feel like I’ve written analogies that feel complete and make sense for them and the work itself. 

You stare up like you used to, towards the incomprehensible lights of celestial bodies dancing on the surface, towards the never-ending fantasies of freedom forever pulling you towards the next horizon. Except now there is an anchor wrapped up in your tail, with a low, humming purr filling your body and quieting the restless whisper in the undercurrent of your blood and gentle claws tracing patterns over your ribs, all brazen ferociousness gone for listless limbs and a sleepy murmur whenever you shift.

There’s still a pull, a need to see, try, explore more. But maybe you don’t need to leave everything behind to feel free. 

from undertow. I feel like this is the closest I’ll come to writing something about Luca’s “teenage rebellion” need for freedom that might lead him to neglect friendships/relationships for fear of being smothered again, and becoming comfortable with intimacy and vulnerability and being tied down.

Also this line:

You don’t want him to be in love with you unless it hurts.

This whole thing from ch2 of Back Home:

“Do you still love me?” you ask again, but now your breath is slow and calm because you know the answer. But you have to ask. Just in case. 

You know the answer because he’s ripped your heart out and sown it back together; replaced old, festering scabs with gossamer threads of promises and gently placed it back inside. It’s still a fragile, ugly patchwork, but he’ll keep replacing bits and pieces of old hurt with new hope until it’s whole. You know it because he has scratch marks and bruises down his back and neck colored by your love and rage, because he lets you ruin him to save yourself.

You know it because you believe him more than you believe yourself.

“More than anything,” he says in a firm voice, as if it’s a fact as natural and definite as the sun rising and setting. He picks the smoldering stardust off the floor, breathes life back into the stars and places them back into your eyes. He smothers the flaming rage in your veins and replaces your blood with love. Because he loves you. You love him too. You love him more than anything and it hurts more than anything. But it’s worth it for the blissful, warm silence when he looks at you and you know he’s seen everything inside you and still he wants to. He makes your heart into a home and you let him. No matter how many times you tear it down in all-consuming fits of rage, he puts it back in order and you let him. He wants to make you better and you want to let him.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

Maybe how drastic the shift from only writing smut to never writing smut was? haha. Dgmw, I still write smut, but I just... don't finish it. Idk, it always ends up pushing up against things I'm uncomfortable with, or I write myself into corners. I feel like they're always things that aren't really a big deal, but they turn into massive hurdles in my head. And while writing smut is fun, I eventually end up feeling like I'm just writing the same things over and over. Which, y'know, is still fun and doesn't mean it's not valuable! I guess I just get really self-conscious over baring my ass on the internet.

On a more positive note, I think I've managed to keep a bit more distance to my writing. I do often get stuck with writing, and that frustration used to encompass everything and be... not great for me mentally. I used to obsess a lot more about feedback and get really bummed out about "underperforming" works and compare myself a lot to others. Now it's more like... I just chuck stuff I think is neat up on AO3 and don't think much more of it.

I’ve also experimented a lot more with style than I expected, and I guess found my voice a bit more!

ALSO how much Luca POV I’ve written. I still feel like I don’t understand the guy, but he’s fun to write. Alberto POV tends to become ... dark, lol.

I played in a pug (pick up game) in overwatch for the first time in years.  Somethings have never changed though.  Little to no rules, no one really plays too hard, I off role’d to help my team.  Everyone was nice though and just played the game.

They both play Wrecking Ball and I just of just select the hero and roll around.  I thought the picture best described how skillful we are at the hero.  Also its titled “We are children of wrecking ball” which is also the new name of are group chat.

Worked 2 straight weeks for the first time since I got sick, hurt my shoulder, than got sick again.  So lets go everyone loves money (I hate money actually). 

I finished my rewatch of Toradora.  Finished Tomo-chan Is A Girl, super good show.  Saw Creed 3 awhile ago and never talked about it here, also really good.  Gonna rewatch another romcom soon but I’m not sure if I want to rewatch My Little Monster or Your Lie In April (and cry).  Could always go for a Lovely Complex rewatch. Our Love Has Always Been 10 centimeters Apart wasn’t too bad.  Blue Spring Ride was good.  Oresuki Are you the only one who loves me? was fucking hilarious.  Wish that show got another season.  Its sad that the last season of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU was so fucking weird.  The animators were like “nah this is the actual best girl” and forgot there was a storyline till like the very last episode.  Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie was good but its apart of the list of shows I’ve watched but didn’t finish but liked them. I can’t actually do a rewatch of Given because I’ve never finished Given because I get to episode 9 and rewatch it 25 times in a row till I pass out every time. 

I don’t know.  Life is a lot less sad lately.  Been super busy.  But I’ve been ok.  

I going to get a cake at the end of the summer to celebrate 2 years of freedom.

I actually spent most of my childhood mostly casually into like Disney stars and random other stuff I picked up on, because I was staunchly opposed to (and didn't know how to) illegally download music. So I was kind of casual about individual artists until my early teens really. But we'll go with the band Scissor Sisters.

Who are your current favourite artists? Taylor Swift <333 and the Beatles

Are you into musicals? Which ones?/Why not? Y E S, I love musicals. My top three are Hadestown, Great Comet and Les Mis and also I adore the musical TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, think it's a hilarious and relatable show with great music.

Do you put individual songs on repeat? If so, for how long and how often? Rarely, and when I do, I don't get past about four or five repeats. My one exception is once in 2013 I listened to Do I Wanna Know for about an hour. No idea what compelled me.

Do you make your own playlists? If so, what's your most entertaining playlist title? I do, it's a passtime. The best ones are "World's going to shit but the music's lit" and it's all ~political songs, "songs to have a breakdown to", "Paul and Taylor Share A Songwriting Kinship, OK?" and "Lennon-McCartney-Godhead", which is only songs they collaborated on a lot (I really like the word "Godhead" okay?)

Do you always sing the lead vocal or do you harmonize sometimes? If you harmonize, do you ever invent your own harmony? I love coming up with new harmonies for songs. There are certain songs where I actually automatically sing the harmony I added instead!

But I'm also really debating on what to title my vampire au itafushi fic!!!! I gained most of my inspiration from Halsey's Badlands album, specifically from "Gasoline", and I'm not sure if I should keep it simple and title it Gasoline or use the lyrics my heart is gold, but my hands are cold.... I'd love input lol.

Lisstennnn I love the boys but tbh if u notice the western artists they collab with or “look up to” are very mainstream, the type to make songs you hear whilst shopping at the mall u know what I mean? Like no doubt they have a couple bangers but cmon anyone that has worked in any clothes store is TIRED of artists like Ed Sheeran, Halsey, Shawn Mendes, Justin Beiber etc. And I hate to see the boys having them as inspirations bc they end up w songs like PTD which are not very good compared to their songs in Korean and I feel like Army is just giving them the views, trying to reach the “goals” and shit withou really liking the songs which isn’t good cause they are just gonna keep making songs like thisss😭 I love my boys but PTD was kinda eeh for me. Hi! Thank for the ask, first of all. People rarely read or respond to my posts, but tbh I can't blame them. I don't even think my posts always show up in the BTS tag lol, and I talk too much. Anyway...

I find it super ironic that BTS seem to love artists that make the kind of music a lot of Armys don't want. The thought of a BTSxJB collab makes me shudder. I love the music BTS make but often not the music BTS listen to. Still, Agust D, RM's music and collabs, Hope World, some of the vocal line's solo songs (especially V's) are not at all the kind of music they've recently said they listen to. Is the music they make and the music they listen to inherently different, or are they just making music that fits their "concept" and the musical identity they've carved for themselves and not necessarily the kind of music they want to do?

This also makes me think of something else, which is that Army literally goes on and on about Black Swan, but BTS have never once said they love the song. I honestly think it's another one of their songs they enjoy but don't think about much. I bet most of them prefer Butter over Black Swan. Some of their favorite songs from MOTS:7 were Zero O'Clock and Louder Than Bombs (both mellow tracks). That's kind of why it's not surprising that they're going in this direction - not only because of the popularity thing, but because they do like more generic pop music, and don't mind doing it (especially if it's only three songs so far).

I think BTS will be surprised by the reaction to this song. When Butter came out I (and some people) didn't like it, but the comment section here and on reddit was mostly positive. The song is cool and trendy. But that's not the case this time around. PTD sounds like a HSM song, and that's not exactly what's fashionable right now. On here and on reddit people have been dissing the track a lot. I don't know what's going to happen in terms of streams and stuff, because Army is powerful and the song might be well received by the GP, but I think they will reach the lowest point in their careers since Dynamite. I don't think the song will bring in a huge number of fans. It won't be a "flop" or whatever, and it's not a title track so it's fine that it doesn't perform super well, but it might hurt them more than benefit them in the long run. They're a lot of disgruntled fans right now and I think their image will take a slight hit. This is the culmination of fans' worries and complaints about their English releases. This time they don't have the excuse of the song being good or a bop. It's truly not a bop, so even Army is outright complaining.

I know people want the song to not do well so BTS can learn a lesson, but even if the song doesn't do well they won't change their current direction. Once the pandemic is over they might drop another Korean album like MOTS:7 and BE, but these albums still have songs that are more poppy and generic than desired. Their next album will have people complaining and their next songs will be blander than the norm too. This is just BTS now imo. Fans talk about ON and Black Swan - and, yes, those songs are amazing and creative - but MOTS:7 also had tracks like Louder Than Bombs and WABP: The Eternal, which, to me are American-y enough. However, fans like those tracks. Current fans don't mind the more American pop sound as long as there are meaningful lyrics and BTS put their own spin to it. BTS will never go back to their Wings era. I don't mind that because I love LY: Answer and MOTS:7 is my favorite album (even though I don't like all the songs). The point I'm trying to make is that, no, BTS won't stop releasing Butter-style music. We can hope that with PTD not doing amazing (it will probably do much better than expected), BTS might try to release a darker song or something.

PS: Am I the only one that felt genuinely embarrassed for BTS watching the MV and listening to the song? I know it's stupid but this was the first time I felt kind of embarrassed being Army. There's nothing wrong with liking 1D or HSM, but, yeah...

The Tradition by Halsey! I've been listening her new album on repeat lol. I think in terms of Johnlock fanfic titles i'd be thinking in terms of like a case related to Mycroft's Diogenes Club or like Sherlock has to attend a posh family gathering of some sort...maybe invites John to act like a fake spouse at that event so they can do more snooping together to solve the case...and obviously the tension between all the expectations from the stuffy family members and the frustration of (seemingly!) unrequited love becomes too much to bear...and in the end a chandelier falls on top of watson and there is a three garridebs moment where sherlock reveals his affection and love :)
