#it's rooted in 80s rock/hard rock and I love that music too

I gotta know would the indie tmnt listen to weezer since theyre 90s kids? I think mikey would. donnie might pretend he's not interested but he'll find himself singing along lol
I was actually thinking about that a bit since my cousins love Weezer. I think either Mikey or Leo would like it. Something I’ve found about people’s music taste is that it’s usually derived from an aspect of their personality that they don’t usually express. For me, I love Nine Inch Nails and hark rock/metal. My sister says it’s probably the angsty teenager that’s the root of it.
So I think in Mikey, there isn’t anything he doesn’t express since he has no filter. He probably likes exactly what you think he’d like, upbeat pop and rock. So he probably likes Backstreet Boys, other kinds of pop from the 80s and 90s, and probably Weezer too.
Donnie is more similar to Mikey in the way he has no filter and says what he’s thinking. I’m in @ezgurple’s boat of Donnie is an NIN fan/general alternative and industrial music. Probably would also love KMFDM since it’s a very similar style.
Leo and Raph would actually have similar tastes in music, but opposite to what you’d expect. Raph is pretty moody and while he does enjoy metal, especially when he’s angry, he really likes more chill rock, like Foo Fighters and other alternative rock when he’s drawing. Leo to put on a chill persona, and he does love rock, but he’s very high strung and so has a guilty pleasure of listening to hard rock and metal.
They all also love video game music, and are constantly humming it around the house. Sometimes it turns into a full on orchestra of drums and bass and lead melodies until Splinter yells at them to shut up because he’s sick of hearing the same song over and over and over again.
Good question! :]

Today’s compilation:
These People Are Nuts! 1989 New Wave / Punk Rock / Alternative Rock / College Rock / Post-Punk / Power Pop / Ska
Here's a nice retrospective rundown of one of the greatest and most eclectic indie labels of the 1980s: I.R.S. Records, which was headquartered in the US, but had a whole lot of UK bands on its roster too. Founded in 1979 by a guy named Miles Copeland, I.R.S. started out primarily as a punk outfit, but as new wave proceeded to develop, it sunk its teeth firmly into that movement too, landing a bunch of acts along the way whose material was considered to be strange, zany, quirky, and campy, like Oingo Boingo and Timbuk 3.
But between all the acts that ultimately end up lending to this album's title being These People Are Nuts! are a bunch of bands who aren't considered to be all that weird too, like The Police, The Go Go's, Buzzcocks, R.E.M., and Fine Young Cannibals. So, what we really have here is a nice blend of genuinely good punk and alternarock with straight-up enjoyably silly and irony-laden new wave.
But this album that celebrates I.R.S.' tenth-year anniversary actually opens with a song that predates the label's existence entirely: it's the B-side of the debut record by the band that Miles Copeland's brother, Stewart, happened to play drums for: "Nothing Achieving," by The Police, a terrific classic rock-punk tune that was released in 1977 on another one of Miles' labels he had founded beforehand, Illegal Records.
And another great tune from those pre-I.R.S. days comes courtesy of a little-known band called The Electric Chairs, who, at the time, were fronted by a performer named Wayne County, who now goes by Jayne County. County is someone who holds the honor of being rock music's first openly trans vocalist, and she ended up working with a lot of famous people throughout her career, including David Bowie. Plus, she was also at the Stonewall Riots. So, she's an absolute legend, to say the least, and her band's punk song, "Thunder," which predates her publicly identifying as a woman, was released on Illegal in 1979.
Also, have you ever wondered where the great Fatboy Slim derived his stage name from? Well, it probably came from Maryland's Root Boy Slim, a brilliant and eccentric rabble-rouser who went to Yale and then came back on homecoming weekend the year after he had graduated and got kicked out and permanently banned from his frat house by none other than future war criminal president George W. Bush himself. His song, "Dare to Be Fat," kinda-sorta answers the question of, "what if Frank Zappa was a black blues-rocker?"
And there's a bunch of other songs from this compilation I could write about too, like The Go Go's’ "We Got the Beat," a landmark new wave tune that convinced the group to head towards a sound that was more new wave than punk; or the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love," which presented a pretty perfect mix of late 70s punk rock and power pop; or Fine Young Cannibals' debut single, "Johnny Come Home," which showed the world this band's signature mix of rock and ska, along with Roland Gift's uniquely satisfying and tender voice.
But I think I'm gonna dedicate a few sentences to a deeply misunderstood song instead: "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades," by Timbuk 3. If you've ever heard this top-20 mid-80s hit before, then there's a pretty solid chance that you're among the many people who think of it as quite possibly the dorkiest song that the new wave era ever spat out.
I mean, peep this refrain if you're not familiar:
I'm doing alright Getting good grades The future's so bright I gotta wear shades
Tumblr media
Now, is it possible that this song was made in a sort of tongue-in-cheek backlashing kind of way in response to all the live fast-die hard, sex-drugs-and-rock n' roll music that was going around back then? Sure, I guess so. But the song wasn't even really so much as that. It was more about the banality of contributing to an evil system and feeling as though you were on the right path. See, "I Gotta Wear Shades" is told from the perspective of a young nuclear scientist at the height of the Cold War, and that brightness in the future he refers to is actually referencing the potential detonation of the nukes that he's been working on. It's a really cleverly-made song that became a pretty big hit, but people never really seemed to understand the message that was behind it. It certainly wasn't a song to celebrate strait-laced, apple-polishing nerds.
So, there you have it: a nice and varied set of songs from a transcontinental indie label that played a big role in shaping new wave, punk, and alternative rock through its first ten years and change. There wasn't really any other label that was quite like I.R.S. Records. A lot of names that would end up defining eras and styles, along with some real kooks too.
Highlights:
The Police - "Nothing Achieving" The Go-Go's - "We Got the Beat" Wayne County & The Electric Chairs - "Thunder" Root Boy Slim - "Dare to Be Fat" Buzzcocks - "Ever Fallen in Love?" Wall of Voodoo - "Mexican Radio" R.E.M. - "Superman" Doctor and the Medics - "Spirit in the Sky" Timbuk 3 - "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" Fine Young Cannibals - "Johnny Come Home" Concrete Blonde - "It'll Chew You Up and Spit You Out"

Goth history time!
So, the subculture was named "Goth" after the music genre "Gothic Rock", which evolved from the postpunk music of the late 70s and early 80s. It's a genre with lots of dark or poetic lyrics (sometimes inspired by gothic literature, but not always), heavy basslines and distinct vocal styles (it's hard to put into words because I'm not very good with music terminology, it's something you can just know when you hear it after you get a feel for it). Since then, gothic rock has grown and thrived, but also branched into a few different subgenres, like deathrock, darkwave, ethereal, coldwave, and a few others.
These are all also considered goth music by most due to the close connection to gothic rock, though where the lines are drawn in subgenres can be a bit blurry since some things stray far enough from their roots that they become their own genres/subcultures (much like how goth itself seperated from punk). Sometimes darker styles of postpunk are included under the goth umbrella too as a nod to gothic rock's roots, others have stricter definitions of what it means to make goth music, and I'm sure there are people out there who can explain it better than I can. I think this video by Cadaver Kelly is a good resource if that's something you're interested in.
Many people within the subculture, when it began, took inspiration in their fashion from the music artists they loved. Whether they saw the artists in photos or during performances and wanted to mimic their style directly, or were inspired by the lyrics and sound of the music and took their own spin on it. It was also common for goths who went to goth clubs or goth nights (where goths would play goth music, dance, share art, or just connect with eachother) to take inspiration from other clubgoers. Goth fashion was, and is, incredibly varied, but it shares a common source- the gothic rock scene.
Basically, what this all means is that Goth is shorthand for gothic rock and its subgenres, and goths, as a group of people, are those who are fans of goth as previously defined.
There are lots of other art forms besides music that goths can connect over, from macabre films to poetry to alternative fashion, but goth music will always be at the core of the subculture and what defines it as a scene. The other things are just fun optional things you can participate in if you'd like.
Goth is like a cake, and the batter itself is made up of the music, and all the other things like fashion and literature are the decorations on the cake.
The decorations can be picked off or changed or skipped and you'll still have a lovely cake.
But if you try to remove the cake and just eat the toppings, or replace the batter with candy, or put all the toppings on a pie... it might still taste good, but it's a fundamentally different dessert. You can't go around calling that cake and expect people to not have questions or complaints.
If cake just isn't for you, that's ok! No one said you have to eat it! But don't tell the people at the birthday party that you brought a cake and then meet them with peanut brittle.
saw some discourse about this recently so wanted to get some tumblr opinions:
reblog for bigger sample size etc etc etc!

Laura Jane Grace – Hole In My Head
Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace has never been afraid to push the envelope in her music and artistic growth. Hole In My Head gets its title from Grace taking it upon herself to tattoo the last remaining part of her body she had yet to ink up, and that was her head. The artwork showcases an explosion of colors and images from Grace’s scalp, and it’s fitting, since she paints with wide and vivid colors on her latest LP. The topics found on Hole In My Head range from her mental health, to the early days of her music career, all the way to coming to terms with her gender identity. Grace’s ability to tell vivid stories over an acoustic (or electric) guitar, and remain captivating, is a remarkable talent not to be taken lightly in a songwriter. It’s a gift that keeps on giving to her fans both old and new, and Hole In My Head ends up being Grace’s finest work since the instant classic of Transgender Dysphoria Blues. The album opens up with the fast-paced title track as Grace laments, “Do you wanna screw? / Baby, what’s the point? / I keep making my bed / And it’s become a real chore.” Grace invites the listener into her headspace as she opens up her soul to whomever is ready to listen. The 50’s rockabilly of “I’m Not A Cop” might just be my favorite song that Grace has written in her solo career, and I thoroughly enjoyed her last EP of At War With The Silverfish, in addition to her first take on solo work (Stay Alive). My favorite lyric on this electric track is, “I think I got this whole city wrong / Any redemption for a stupid old punk? / You can run from where you’re going, but not who you love.” I think the last line of that is a beautiful admission of the power of love and how we can fall head over heels into relationships. Sure, it’s always a risk, but it’s one that many of us take at one point or another because the reward far outweighs the pitfalls. ”Dysphoria Hoodie” was the first single to be released from the set, and it does a nice job of setting the table for the material that led Grace to these conclusions. The memorable refrain of, “When it says ADIDAS on my chest / All day long I dream of sex” is a clever play on words and highlights Grace’s remarkable talent as a poignant songwriter. “Birds Talk Too” rocks along like an 80’s pop song about falling in love, while “Punk Rock In Basements” brings Grace’s focus back to the early days of her punk rock roots. The back half of the LP never loses its early momentum gained, with the largely acoustic-based storytelling on “Cuffing Season,” as Grace sings in a wakeful ponder of, “And if the world isn’t flat, may as well fucking be / What difference does it make to you me?” The catchy chorus continues down the path of pop-based chords to make for a “campfire moment” in the set of songs. “Tacos & Toast” is another song that relies on an acoustic guitar and Grace’s trademark vocal delivery to keep its charm. The closing lyrics of “If I could blow the moon out of the sky / I’d wipe that fucker clean out of the night” allows for brief moment of silence to reflect on everything Grace has poured into the listeners’ earholes. The gritty bass line found on “Mercenary” is just great punk rock song structure in its purest form, while “Keep Your Wheels Straight” features some hand claps behind the acoustic guitar strums as Grace walks the line between songwriter and storyteller with trapeze-artist ease. The chorus of, “I’m keeping the faith / Everything will be okay / If I draw my curtains tight / And I sleep through the day / Keeping the faith / Everything will turn out great / If I can just keep my wheels steering straight,” recognizes the importance of carrying on through the darkest of times. “Hard Feelings” is a cocktail of the thoughts running through Grace’s mind as she sings melodically, “Oh, Mother Mother Mother / I’ve ruined my brain / On alcohol, weed, porn, and cocaine.” She takes it all in stride and never lets the heavier thoughts outweigh the glimmer of hopefulness in the end. Album… https://chorus.fm/reviews/laura-jane-grace-hole-in-my-head/

My thoughts on Pitchfork's 150 best albums of the 1990s; #80-#71
Been quite some time. I'm surprised I still have the gumption to do this. Nobody cares, including me. Is there no bedrock to how deep I'll dig, just to fecklessly troll albums from more than 20 years ago?
Reminder: three completely subjective criteria. 1: do I like it, yes or no? (Basically, is this for me?) 2: Would I recommend it to anyone, yes or no? (is this for anyone else?) and 3: Is it better than STPs "Core"? (The lowest bar. Few things are better than "Purple," but Core should absolutely be in the top 150, so that's the bar.)
80: Bikini Kill: The C.D. Version of the First Two Records (1994). Hit's hard. I love this kind of punk, even though I have no idea what the lyrics are.
Like it: sure. Recommend: sure. Better than "Core": no.
79: DMX: It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot (1998)). I don't know. It's complicated. It was likely ahead of it's time, but incredibly problematic by todays' standards. I could say the same about almost every rap and hip hop album on the list.
Like it: not really. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
78: The Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs (1999). Fuck this fucking "album". It almost made me give up the whole project here. It's THREE albums, with enough good material for less than one. It's confused, confusing, not entertaining, and doesn't belong anywhere near a list like this. Pretentious shit.
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
77: The Roots: Things Fall Apart (1999). This was good. I need to listen to more Roots. That being said, too high on the list.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": no.
76: The KLF: Chill Out (1990). Legitimately WAY ahead of it's time. Maybe? It's basically lofi music to chill to, 30+ years ago. Then it get's dance-clubby for no discernable reason. I liked it.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": no.
75: Nirvana: In Utero (1993) . I never liked Nirvana as much as I was supposed to. I definitely missed my chance to get them. It's noisy, and I don't get the higher-level stuff that actual music scholars claim is in there. It just sounds messy to me.
Like it: not really. Recommend: i don't know. Better than "Core": who am I to judge, I guess.
74: Missy Elliott: Supa Dupa Fly (1997). Yes. more of this. Missy is a fucking Queen, and has been for more than 25 years. Album rules.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": yes.
73: Yo La Tengo: I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (1997). Excellent. Loved it. Had fun. All that. Indie rock that refuses to acknowledge the potential existence of fame.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": sure.
72: De La Soul: De La Soul Is Dead (1991). Very good. It does suffer from the werid 90s thing of "yeah, there is going to be a skit now that is a deeply 'you had to be there' joke. What are you going to do about it?" But the actual songs are great
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": just shy.
71: Pulp: Different Class (1995). Don't get it. If you asked me to explain what separates Pulp from Jesus and Mary Chain, the best I'd have is: Jesus and Mary Chain is way better.
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.

In 2002, the official My Chemical Romance website had a frequently asked questions tab. This was written sometime before May 2002 (question 4). Below the cut is all 10 questions and answers. This is the archived website.
We get a lot of questions about certain things... so here are some answers.
What's the significance of the name of the band? Mikey came up with the name My Chemical Romance. It works on a lot of different levels for the band. At the root of it, the name refers to the works of Scottish author Irvine Welsh. A "chemical romance" is the genre he has created in works such as The Acid House, Filth, and of course Trainspotting. Mikey added the word "my" to it to add a personal dimension to the name. In essence, it means a romance with chemical substances.
So are you saying you guys do drugs? No. My Chemical Romance does not do drugs or condone the use of drugs. However, the band is not straightedge and likes to party like everyone else.
How long have you guys been a band? It seems like you guys came out of nowhere... As a fully functioning band, My Chemical Romance has been together since Jan of 2002, when Mikey was officially added to the roster as bass player. Matt and Gerard started the band in November 2001, with Matt playing drums and Gerard singing and playing guitar, but Gerard isn't that good on guitar and he wanted a guitarist so he could just sing, jump around, dance and do other things like "unleash the bats," "hump the sky," and "exorcise the demons." Ray then joined the band and they had a hard time finding a bass player until realizing they should just train Mikey, who ended up making them all look like bitches when he learned the set in a month. Other than that all of the members of the band have been making music together for years in various bands and have been a part of the scene in various ways. Until now, the music and the combination of musicians never fit perfectly and could best be chalked up as a learning experience. We've recently Frank Iero as another guitarist, and the band now finally feels complete.
You guys have a record coming out on Eyeball Records? How and When? Eyeball Records is a label we respect and love, and we're thrilled to get the offer to do our first record with them. They have a long history, have put out and worked with a lot of bands we love, and have given us 100% creative freedom to make this album however we wanted. They are as excited about the record as we are. We record the first week of May '02 and expect the record to have a summer release. The album entitled "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" will feature all of the songs from our set, including a final mix of "Vampires Will Never Hurt You". From then on we will tour and support the album for a long time while working on new songs.
What are your influences? Everything. We listen to lots of different music but if we had to list some bands and artists that have been a big influence on our sound we would have to say: Iron maiden (it doesn't get any better than these guys), At The Gates (except these guys), The Pixies, The Misfits (Danzig years) and Samhain, The Smiths, Morrissey, The Haunted, Pulp, Blur, Johann Sebastian Bach, Fernando Sor, Queen, Guns and Roses, Helloween, and the list goes on and on...
Are Mikey and Gerard brothers? Yes. Mikey and Gerard are loving brothers that enjoy rocking out together. But they consider Ray and Matt their brothers too, only Puerto Rican and French ones.
What kind of equipment do you use? Ray plays a Session guitar. A Session is a knock off of a Gibson Les Paul from around the early 80s. I asked a vintage guitar store owner some information about Session seeing as how Ray won't play anything else and he said, "It's a piece of shit. It was made in the Philippines in the '80s and Sam Ash used them to sucker people into buying a cheap guitar. Worst guitar ever. And the factory blew up". Ray also uses a 100 watt Marshall JCM 2000 head, a Laney Cabinet, and assorted stomp boxes. Mikey plays a Fender American Jazz bass with obnoxious silver sparkle finish. Matt uses Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals (a lot), and an enormous Gibraltar drum cage. If you've ever seen us live then you understand how big this thing is. Gerard uses an SM58 Shure mic. The mic of choice for Bruce Dickinson.
I want a T-shirt! Any merch soon? We have some buttons and we're running out. We just invested in a button maker so we can have all sorts of self-indulgent crazy buttons you can wear for cheap. The band has finally decided on 2 designs that are being drawn up as we speak and they love them, so expect them soon.
What's all this nonsense about bats??? The band likes bats. Who doesn't? If you've seen the band live you might have heard Gerard mention something about turning into one or unleashing some sort of swarm of them. "Unleash the fucking bats" is something they say to each other seconds before starting the set to get themselves pumped up. This all started back in Jan '02 when the band finally came together and started playing together with an intensity none of them had ever known. That fateful night they rocked together so hard that a "rock portal" opened up and out flew a swarm of giant bats. No shit.
I heard you guys cover Morrissey... why? We cover a B-side called Jack The Ripper. Basically we wanted to cover it because we knew we could do a really rocking version of this song. It rocks as it is but we felt if we added a little "kick" to it and did like we do all of our others it would be something special. If you've ever seen us play this live we absolutely can't control ourselves while we're doing it, and its a good warm-up for "Vampires Will Never Hurt You."

💙 (some of) my fred headcanons!! fredcanons™
(some of these are my expansions on actual canon facts about him, while others are entirely my own ideas! either way, i hope you enjoy them!)
his hair is dyed blonde, a 3am crisis-fuelled impulse decision he made as a fourteen year old that just ended up becoming his regular look. aside from his dark roots that often show, barely anybody remembers a time when he was a brunette. which is probably for the better
he similarly started wearing ascots on a whim, but ended up finding them very comforting! he has like ten of the exact same make and colour, but also a couple with funky patterns that he saves for special occasions.
the gang can work out his emotions based on what he’s doing with his ascot. if he’s twisting it around his fingers, he’s deep in thought about something he doesn’t want to talk about. if he’s twisting it around his thumbs, he’s deep in thought about something he does want to talk about. if he’s pulling at it, he’s stressed or frustrated. and if he takes it off, IT’S ABOUT TO GO DOWN™
he has dimples that are most noticeable when he smiles! which is a whole lot!! though he gets self-conscious if anybody points them out.
he loves cats, but is allergic to them. as such, he has ten boxes of antihistamine on him at any given time (usually for if he wants to visit his local cat café).
he has a terrible relationship with sleep, namely he will go a week without it and then completely crash from exhaustion somewhere. nine times out of ten that place will not be his bed
more specifically, he has a tendency to always fall asleep in moving vehicles (unless he’s the one driving, of course).
he once saw a recycling campaign as a child that said “save the planet” and became convinced from that moment forward that it was his job to single-handedly save the world by recycling
he has probably broken every single bone in his body at least once. this man’s danger awareness is the size of an atom and he knows every doctor at the er by name
his main special interest is traps/rube goldberg machines, but his others are space/astronauts, most sports, cars/mechanics, theatre, film and photography!
he has fantastic reflexes (for setting off traps at just the right time and catching people if they jump into his arms!!), but is surprisingly terrible at video games outside of the rhythm genre and arcade driving simulators.
speaking of video games he is a villager main when he plays smash bros with the gang i am not taking constructive criticism at this time
he has a small but very beloved plushie collection! this started with mr trapples of course, whom he has had since he was a baby. another notable plush friend is one of those big totoros, given to him by velma (frank welker voiced him in the english dub of my neighbour totoro!)
he has the music taste of an 80 year old. he mentions elvis on every occasion he can get in wnsd you know he’s out there listening to buddy holly and chuck berry as well. you know that he thinks rock around the clock was where music peaked. You Know This
his favourite film is pleasantville and he cannot ever get through the whole thing without crying (me neither) (please watch pleasantville)
he has a notorious sweet tooth that he tries so hard to deny, but the whole gang knows about the family-sized bag of crispy m&ms he keeps in the glove compartment of the mystery machine
on the other hand he cannot handle any spicy food At All but he wants to be able to someday!! he’s learning from the best (shaggy and scooby)
he’s better with sciences and math-based subjects, but he loves studying shakespeare almost as much as he loves performing it! he still knows all of hamlet’s soliloquies by heart and will recite any of them on command. o that this too solid flesh would melt
he’s been playing guitar since he was a child! he started because he was inspired by his favourite musicians, but also equally because daphne was an amazing singer and he wanted to be able to play accompaniment for her!!
his fingers are always covered in band-aids from trap-building and guitar practise… he’s also just that guy who will find a new bruise or graze on his body every week and think “huh. i have no idea where that came from”
he texts like a dad. shaggy will send a cursed meme to the group chat and he will respond with “Haha Thats Very Funny ! 😂”
he’s a dork and i care about him

We have some buttons and we're running out. We just invested in a button maker so we can have all sorts of self-indulgent crazy buttons you can wear for cheap. The band has finally decided on 2 designs that are being drawn up as we speak and they love them, so expect them soon.
☠︎ What's all this nonsense about bats???
The band likes bats. Who doesn't? If you've seen the band live you might have heard Gerard mention something about turning into one or unleashing some sort of swarm of them. "Unleash the fucking bats" is something they say to each other seconds before starting the set to get themselves pumped up. This all started back in Jan '02 when the band finally came together and started playing together with an intensity none of them had ever known. That fateful night they rocked together so hard that a "rock portal" opened up and out flew a swarm of giant bats. No shit.
☠︎ I heard you guys cover Morrissey...why?
We cover a B-side called Jack The Ripper. Basically we wanted to cover it because we knew we could do a really rocking version of this song. It rocks as it is but we felt if we added a little "kick" to it and did like we do all of our others it would be something special. If you've ever seen us play this live we absolutely can't control ourselves while we're doing it, and its a good warm-up for "Vampires Will Never Hurt You."

Masterlist about Voice
Voice Claim: Lzzy Hale
Other inspirations: Axl Rose, Robert Plant
Vocal range: almost four octaves
Voice type: dramatic mezzo-soprano with hints of Soprano sfogato
Speaking voice: gritty mezzo
Longest notes: 15 to 30 seconds
Instruments: piano, learning electric, rhythm/lead and bass guitar
Education: choir singer for a week, almost completely self taught
Genres: hard rock, glam rock, glam metal, pop rock, cock rock (yes that's a thing.), alternative rock, grunge, bits of heavy metal. Founder of cosmic rock.
Unique qualities: natural grit in every part of her range, long, sustained belts even into the 6th octave, crazy vocal runs lasting up to 30 seconds, incredibly powerful vibrato, ability to switch to clean voice after satanic howls in a second, mimicking electric guitar sounds/singing along to it, comfortable in the lower registers as well, extremely flexible voice and vocal agility
Three word description: Explosive. Unique. Legendary.
Stage presence: Cindy has been through a lot. She suffered, has too many unhealthy coping mechanisms for her unresolved traumas but music...is something else. When performing, no matter for one person or for an arena she is truly herself. Happy, carefree and a hurricane. She never can stay still, only when executing those famous hour long belts, otherwise she's running, jumping all around the stage. She is charismatic, magnetic not just because of her talent but active effort to get the crowd enjoy themselves and sing after or with her. Sometimes even making physical contact with the raging fans, jumping off stage to deliver a few lines to one specific person. Her outfits look like she just came out of a BDSM gear store. Leather, vinyl, pvc, spikes, harnesses, high heels, chains; her wardrobe as flashy as her gritty falsetto screeches. She has no problem running around in basically bikini/lingerie, she is kind with fans but there's an underlying pride about her capabilities and display of her body. The concerts are long and she never loses any energy or has her voice weakened nearing the end. Her voice is as great if not better live than recorded.
Care: Cindy's voice is her most treasured possession and while using her gift to the utmost, she does it in a safe way. She is the embodiment of Fire but she doesn't want to test whenever her vocal chords are included in the regeneration process. She warms up every day, carefully going through her whole range, prodding whenever she can expand into whistle register or not. After singing she also does cooldown exercises just like after an intense workout you don't leave your body hanging. She consumes 2 liters of water in a day (despite...due to her anatomy it's nothing), doesn't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs. She has 5 teas to keep her throat and vocals healthy, revitalized: Chamomile to repair tissue, Licorice root for anti inflammatory effects, Mixture of licorice, anise, raspberry leaves and slippery elm for soothing, overall protection, faster recovery, Peppermint to relieve stress and relax the muscles, Green tea to strengthen that impossible vibrato even further. Cindy is undeniably gifted but she worked and works hard to achieve & keep her current level and not reckless with her talent.
Songs: She writes her own songs, she has the instrumental part in her head but unable to write that down due to the lack of professional teaching. She can cover the most famous songs from I will always love you to Black Dog, showing her versatility in genres.
Habits/quirks: drumming the rhythm with her left leg, improvisation vocal stunts for minutes during mid songs for a true 80s experience, burning chemistry with band members, closing her eyes to bask in the guitar solo mixed with the roars of awe

A year ago, the guitar was in dire straits. With songs like Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings,” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” and Panic! At the Disco’s “High Hopes” among the most consumed of 2019, programmed beats and horns were the sonic flavors of popular music. Sure, there were outliers — the Jonas Brothers’ “Sucker,” Maroon 5’s “Memories” and Post Malone’s “Circles” among them — but as the rock and alternative genres embraced artists like Billie Eilish, whose innovative music made the traditional band approach feel outdated, the days of chords and solos seemed numbered if not headed towards irrelevance.
Then came the coronavirus pandemic and things changed. Forced to perform from home or in rooms not intended for live music during lockdown, many artists went back to basics and out came the trusty six-string. For iHeartRadio’s “Living Room Concert for America” in March, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl played an acoustic Guild on “My Hero”; Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day strummed to his band’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”; and even Eilish, with her collaborator brother Finneas, sang her hit “Bad Guy” accompanied by only a Fender acoustic. Other benefit livestreams like Global Citizen’s “One World Together At Home” event saw the Rolling Stones, Keith Urban and Shawn Mendes strip down their hit songs for unplugged versions. And in April, Miley Cyrus delivered an emotional cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” on “Saturday Night Live” with Andrew Watt, himself a COVID survivor, on guitar.
At the same time, there was an electric guitar solo being heard on one of the most-played songs in the United States. Harry Styles’ “Adore You,” which has logged 1.1 million radio spins in 2020, according to Mediabase, and has been streamed more than 400 million times, per Alpha Data, features the playing of Kid Harpoon (real name: Tom Hull), Styles’ friend and producer, who handled the guitar parts for much of the Brit’s excellent “Fine Line” album, released in Dec. 2019. As it turns out, the melody of the solo, which also serves as the bridge to “Adore You,” was first hummed by Styles for Hull to emulate. “I did it with my mouth into a microphone,” Styles told Variety in October. “And then Tom sent me this video trying to get it to sound the same. He spent a couple of hours getting it.”
Why include a guitar solo when most pop songs would never dare? “I feel it’s kind of like ‘La La Land’ saving jazz  — only for rock ‘n’ roll,” Styles cracked when posed with the question. But more seriously speaking, Variety‘s Hitmaker of the Year added: “I’m not a spearheader of the movement, like, ‘Let’s bring back guitars.’ There’s plenty of times when [a song] doesn’t sound better with a guitar, and you don’t use it. But a lot of the references I grew up with have guitars; and it’s the first instrument I played, so it makes sense that I would like the sound of them more. I don’t think the guitar is dying. Guitars are great and always have been.”
In fact, guitar sales in 2020 have been robust. Music retailer Sweetwater reports more than 50% year-over-year growth in guitar purchases, with even larger increases during the peak COVID months of April, May and June “when customers most likely hunkered down to practice and create music after watching all of the streaming video they could handle,” according to a rep for the Indiana-based company.
The spike extended to other string instruments as well, which saw growth of more than 70% year-over-year in the price range of $299 or lower. The metric indicates that “new players are joining the fold,” says Sweetwater, which has been in business for over four decades and operates online. (Competitor Guitar Center, with more than 250 physical locations in the U.S., did not fare as well, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month.)
Even in the virtual world, learning to play an instrument has taken off during lockdown. The platform Yousician, which provides interactive learning for guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and voice, currently reigns as the No. 1 app for music instruction while its sister product, GuitarTuna, is tops for guitar tuning.
Ask current writers and producers working in pop and hip-hop about their process and you soon learn that an acoustic guitar is often the beginning or the essence of a hit song. Among Variety‘s 2020 Hitmakers, the trio of Taz Taylor, Charlie Handsome and KC Supreme credited a guitar loop as the foundation for Trevor Daniel’s “Falling.” For Maren Morris’ “The Bones,” producer Greg Kurstin noted: “The first thing I noticed was Jimmy Robbins’ guitar hook; I wanted to keep the song rooted in that.”
“So many hit songs from 2020 started with a acoustic or electric guitar, whether it be a melody line or simple progression,” says songwriter and producer Jenna Andrews, whose recent credits include BTS’ “Dynamite” and Benee’s “Supalonely.”
And often, those guitar-based foundations remained through the finished product — for instance, 24KGoldn’s “Mood,” with its impossibly catchy sun-kissed guitar riff, and Powfu’s “death bed (coffee for your head).”
“I know it sounds kinda old school, but I love it when a well-recorded acoustic pops off on the radio,” says Sam Hollander, whose hits include the aforementioned “High Hopes” and Fitz and the Tantrums’ “HandClap.” “The bulk of my songs tend to be born on guitar. Without that foundation, the lyrics and melodies never really emote the heartbeat and emotion that I’m trying to dial in. There’s just a general warmth to it that’s hard to replicate. It’s like the warmest chocolate chip cookie.”
“I think the prevalence of guitar in 2020 has a lot to do with hip-hop producers using more emo and punk-rock influences,” offers Angie Pagano, whose AMP management company represents Tommy Brown (Ariana Grande, Blackpink) and Mr. Franks, among others. “Juice Wrld really helped bring this into the mainstream over the last few years. We’re seeing a great blend of emo and trap these days.”
Indeed, the year’s most-consumed hits leaned hip-hop — Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” landed at No. 1 on the Hitmakers list with Future and Drake, Jack Harlow and Megan Thee Stallion in the Top 10 — but even DaBaby’s “Rockstar,” the No. 3 song of the year, referenced a guitar in its chorus, albeit alongside mention of a Glock pistol. That visual may go against what Hollander calls “the Kumbaya vibe of the guitar,” but the song still features an acoustic strum at its core.
In the case of Styles’ 2020 successes, which also include the ubiquitous “Watermelon Sugar,” his producer further explained that, while aware of what was reacting on the charts at the time they were recording, Styles wasn’t about to chase the trends. Said Tom Hull: “We [thought], we can’t play the commercial game in terms of what’s happening right now. What we can do is make music that really resonates with us. There’s no blueprint. You just have faith. We love records from the ’70s and ’80s; weird prog rock music that might be a seven-minute instrumental; then you’re listening to Shania Twain, like, ‘This is awesome, too.’ The goal was to make something we will always love, and if it completely flops commercially, at least we know we love it. We have that.”

TOSHIYA PERSONAL INTERVIEW SPECIAL HEADBANG VOL.27 TRANSLATION 2/2
Tumblr media
The upcoming new chapter of the bassist who established himself while evolving his playing style in the middle of fierce battles he experienced overseas. “When it comes to digital releases, it just feels like data” “I don't think there is another album that makes me want to die so much inside while I’m listening to it as this one (laughs).“ “If I have the opportunity to do music out of DIR EN GREY, this is the genre I want to try “ “If there's a world in front of you that you didn't know before, look at it, and if there's something you think that would be even better, you can pick it and bring it home.”
Notes before reading:  This is the second part of personal interview of Toshiya from the magazine Headbang Vol.27 released on 18th August.  The interview is 11 pages long, this part covers the last 5 and a half. You can read the first part here. You can get the magazine at Amazon Japan or CDJapan.  Feel free to correct me if you spot any mistake or any confusing parts.
----- ----
Text by Hiroko Goto (First part here) - Even as the start of a new chapter, I think it will be a great time for those who have been waiting for it. I’m looking forward to the reactions towards the new single.
T: That’s right. Also, this time, it’s the first time we are releasing a single in this way, so I wonder how is going to feel. It’s a little wait-and-see.
-Because Dir en grey have never been available in almost any music streaming services before too. This time, are you releasing the single in this format due to Corona?
T: That’s right. Originally, we tried to put it out as a physical one.
-I see. Do you see this digital release format as something positive?
T: I have no choice but to think positively for the time being (laughs)  Because if we release a single, and it’s not going to listened, there is no point on doing it but, after all, as we do it, if there is a way for people to listen to it, I think it should be used. However, to use any method to release it because there is a way to do it, I think that’s different for me. While we were carefully checking those aspects, I think I would like to take into consideration several things. Simply, because I’m a coward (laughs). It’s kind of scary because I feel like the songs are all over and the songs are our best asset. After all, I want to cherish/value them. Of course, I think there are many positive things in distributing them but now that we are doing it, I think we must distinguish between plus and minus sides of it. -Especially for Dir en grey, the package is usually elaborated and you can also feel the sense of commitment/pickiness on it.
T: That’s right. When it comes to digital releases, it just feels like data. So that’s why it’s a matter of the value of the things. The value that you can give it them, or the level that you can take it at. I would like to think about the future as I’m looking at this release.
-After this single, what direction do you want to move towards from now on as a part of Dir en grey?
T: As a band, while constantly incorporating what seems new to us, we want to challenge both, our activities, and songs. Right now, once again, we want to try it with the feeling that Dir en grey can do anything。
-I see. Comparing yourself to the Toshiya from the past, you have a better judgement about what you can do and what you can't, and you want to think about it properly. Each member thinks that way as well, so I think it would be nice if you could absorb each one’s good points and bring it to the band. Nevertheless, as everyone simply has a different age, a different personality, and the environment in which you grew up is different, I think there are different things that each of you want to do. Among them, for me, I don't think it's necessary for each of you to achieve 100% of what each one of you wants to do. Combining several % well, I think you are a band that eventually will reach the 100%. If you can keep that way, there  will  simply always be an interesting taste and you can keep being an exciting band.
“The first band I came across was Guns N' Roses. It was an encounter that felt like ‘what on Earth is this?”
-From here, I would like to ask you about the 'Inspirational albums'  you have selected and approach your personality when it comes to music. Personally, I feel that your musical tastes are less visible than the other four members.
T: Hahaha. I get that a lot (laughs).
-Are you aware about the things that are not appealing to you?
T: I am. I mean, I know what I like, but I don’t know why I like it (laughs) Basically, I like music.
-You chose 20 albums in particular, what was your criteria in order to choose those?
T: I simply chose these ones because I think these might the ones, I was listening to at the time I was more sensitive/impressionable by music.
-There are a lot of works from the 80's and 90's as a whole, Were you listening to these before you got in the band? T: There are also some that are after the formation of the band and I also include some that I was listening to before playing in the band. There are many from the time when the band was formed, and we made our debut.
-The genres are quite wide, it’s firmly pressed line-up to of iconic masterpieces. In what specific areas have you been affected by them?
T: For example, Guns N'Roses 'Appetite for Destruction' (1987), when I was in middle school, I was like ‘What on earth is this?’ when I came across them. It was a time when LA metal (80s metal/glam metal) was popular. Van Hale was also very popular, and Europe's "The Final Countdown" was being played all around. That's how I met Guns, but the first thing I heard was 'Use your Illusion I','II' (1991). Then, I heard there were more amazing (from them) albums before those, so I listened to 'Appetite for Destruction'.
-When you came across Guns N’ Roses, did you think "the band is cool"?
T: It’s a very stupid idea but, it was a time in which music was equal to delinquency, and live houses had the image of being a sink/den of iniquity* (laughs). At first, I was like ‘What is this?’ and then I got interested. Including such an atmosphere, I think it was cool and I had a strong sense of admiration.
*a place where immoral or illegal things are done.
-When you go from there in chronological order, what kind of transition are you going through?  In your selection, there are a lot of grunge (albums) too.
T: That’s right. Exactly after that, the wave of grunge came. But if you say which one is the one ruling the movement,  for me it’s not Nirvana. When I dug down while listening to that genre, I personally fell in love with Pixies. It was a time in which listening to one artist made us feel more connected. Here and here there would be good friends, here and here there would be people that you don’t get along with. I got worried about that when I listened to them. I went to see Pixies’ performance in Japan a few years ago and it was really good. If I have to say something about that time, at the Pixies live, the lighting goes red through one song and it's just red.I was impressed by the effect of only using that colour in the scene. After that, when we talked about what kind of production we wanted to do on our tour, I said "I went to see Pixies and I  said “ I want to do this in the same way because such lighting was interesting" (laughs)
-Is that so?
T: It's a band that's influenced me from that perspective.
“I had a friend who liked thrash metal. He told me that this kind of music existed”
-While there is a trend from hard rock to grunge, on the other hand, there are also metal elements  you are interested in such as Metallica's “Master of Puppets” (1986) and Pantera's “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992), which are known as masterpieces. When did this kind of metal music get into your life?
T:  When I was in high school. At that time, I had friends who liked Metallica and slash metal such as Pantera and Slayer. I learnt  this music existed, and I started listening to it.
-This didn’t come to my mind until now but, in fact, some of them can be called the roots of metal.
T: Yeah, I really liked it. I also liked to listen to the band that guitaris Steve Vai made as a solo band under his name (Vai). When I was in high school, I had a lifetime friend who was shredding his guitar and looked like a bakateru* guitarist (laughs). I had a lot of fun. *Bakateru (A Japanese made-up word from  “baka” and “techniques”) is a person who plays an instrument using simple/stupid techniques that made them look like professional players.
-That’s good (laughs) While there are hard rock and metal in your choices, the overall impression is that there are many bands and works with a slightly downer atmosphere.
T: Certainly, I think I like downer style a little (laughs).  Stone Temple Pilots has also a part of hard Rock and a strong grunge effect, bit I like the indescribable downer feeling. Then, I chose Alice in Chains for the selection. Alice in Chains is another downer band that I like. When I first heard it, I couldn't understand it at all. I didn't even know what was good about them (laughs) From them, I like Dirt (1992) which I chose this time for the selection.
-By the way, it has the same name as your apparel brand….
T: It has nothing to do with it (laughs).  But, as it is an album I like (even if it has the same name) I guess it’s fine.
-And, when it comes to downer works, you listed “OK Computer" (1997), from Radiohead. T:I don't think there is another album that makes me want to die so much inside while I’m listening to it as this one (laughs). When I was in the states with Yoshiki producing the single, I have the impression I listened to it a lot.
-Radiohead also has had several changes through their career, but if you have to choose, is this one?
T: If you ask me which one from Rahiohead I would pick, as expected it’s this one. Maybe I like feeling like dying (laughs)
“If I had the chance to play music elsewhere, I would like to try an industrial band”
-(Laughs). As for genre, you also included industry albums such as Nine Inch Nails and Ministry.
T: I like industrial because I have the strong impression  it’s not only about the band sound. For me, it has something, like asking for the impossible. If I have the opportunity to do music out of DIR EN GREY, this is the genre I want to try, an industrial band.
-I definitely want you to try to do it.  I can tell you are listening to music with several components but, what are your roots as a bassist?
T: After all, I like Guns's Duff McKagan the most. The one who shocked me like “This…. this is bass!” was Japan’s bassist Mick Karn. I felt like ‘What’s this?’.  He had the magical image of a man that lived in Greece (laughs). I also like the bassline of Alice in Chains or Stone Temple Pilots, which I mentioned earlier.
-I see.
T: Also, in terms of bass, Pantera's 'Vulgar Display of Power' was made in a way that the original cd was only vocals, guitar and drums (laughs). But in their 20th Anniversary Edition (Deluxe Edition In 2012) I was happy to be able to hear the bass properly.
-When it comes to types of bassist, rather than someone who slaps the bass, comes to the front, and stands out, many artists (bassist) have the image of keeping the groove.
T: That’s right. Originally, I didn't really like finger playing or slap bassists. My first motivation was Guns, so I had the image of rocking, like holding the base down and playing with a pick. To me slapping had an image of a fusion style.
-In fact, considering your own play style now, I think they are connected.
T: They are. However, there was a moment when my thoughts changed a bit in that aspect. When I went abroad and went together on tour with Deftones and went to festivals, the bassist Chi Cheng looked very cool. KORN was on the same tour, so I was watching Fieldy’s playing as well.
-It was at the "Family Values Tour" in 2006.
T: That’s right. That was the moment in which there was a change of era not only musically but also of my self-consciousness. Of course, I still liked my play style then, and of course I still like it now, but the idea that I can only do that, and I can only do that…. I started to want to see more things (that I could do). Compared to that time, there is a lot of information, isn’t it?
-Indeed.
T: There are a lot of ways and you choose yourself from that huge amount of information, so you can pick only the good things. But at that time, there wasn’t that much information available, so all I knew was from my own experience. It was like that for things, the length of my ruler was fixed. That…. it overlaps with the story of 'Clever Sleazoid' that I mentioned earlier, when I starter to look overseas, I realized that I could clearly see that “this kind of world exists”. I started to think differently about it, hating without trying it. If there's a world in front of you  you didn't know before, look at it, and if there's something you think would be even better, you can pick  it and bring it home. Looking back at it again, I think my playing style has changed since we made a full-scale expansion overseas and  I turned my eyes to overseas.
“Deftones are the band that influenced me the most once I saw them playing live and went on tour together with them”
-From Deftones, you chose White Pony' (2000)
T: I was shocked when I first heard them. As I said, at the time I saw them live and went on tour with them, if I had to say an album that I felt strong about and affected me, it would be this one.  I think their latest work at the time of the tour was the 'Deftones' (2003) or 'Saturday Night Wrist' (2006), but when they played the songs of 'White Pony', the audience went crazy. I was very impressed.
-From that perspective, many of the bands you chose have co-starred with DIR EN GREY. Are there other bands that impressed you?
T: We were with Metallica together at overseas festivals, but after watching it live, I thought it was really amazing. Since Pantera stopped before I could see them, it was nice I was able to see Metallica. In that sense, I was very excited to be at the same festival when Faith No More restarted their activities. I originally liked it and thought I couldn't watch it anymore, so I was excited when I realized I could see them live.
-That sounds good.
T: Also, we had been with Alice in Chains in a festival. Then, I heard from the dressing room that the guitarist was playing the guitar all the time. I remember thinking “Ah, I like that guitar” (laughs)
-As expected, you have many stories with the bands you were appearing together.
T: That’s right, that's a good thing (laughs)
-You've appeared together with Tool at OZZFEST JAPAN 2015.
T: That’s right. At that time, Tool was active, so we also have appeared together at overseas. I didn't actually watch the live then. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to watch them from a wing* of the stage later, which was really amazing. It feels like being on a trip. Thinking that way, I think I might like bands that makes me go a bit on a trip.
*The wings are the hidden areas to the left and right of the stage
-Also, since Japanese bands were not going abroad as much as now, that you were actively expanding and constantly playing overseas, looking at it, it seems like a good era.
T: Now, I think we were able to go abroad at a really good moment, so it was really a good era. I think it's normal for nowadays bands to go abroad but there are bands you can't see live now; at that time, I could see the music scene. It was good that we were able to go there at that moment.
-Tool’s '10,000 Days' (2006) is the newest work you've mentioned. Since then, there has been a big change over time, and now there are more choices such as music streaming services. Has the way of listening to music, or the variety of it, changed?
T: At that time, you couldn't hear a CD unless you bought it. Furthermore, in the old days, you couldn't afford to pay about 3000 yen each time you buy an album. There are many works that I was interested but I couldn't listen to. In that sense, I think it's a good time to listen anything. But at that time, I paid for listening to that one album, and since I bought it, it was nice to listen to it for a long time. When it comes to streaming, it sounds like "something  you are playing while doing another thing”. Going back to what I talked about, that's why it's a scary part, and I'm still a little behind the times.
-As you are in the artist creator side, you feel like you want people to face your work firmly.
T: As expected that’s it. Well, it’s the selfishness of a creator (laughs). That’s the truth of these things, to be honest, I think that music and magazines are just for entertainment. Because, if had to think about if I will live or die tomorrow, I think I would pick food, not music or books (laughs). If you think about it in that way, I wonder what really entertainment is.I think that because of the entertainment, it is possible to obtain the richness of a human heart. It has become more difficult than it used to be, to determine what kind of value to add there.

Sam x Alan Headcannons
TW: None
(for @averyangrylesbian 👊💞)
Tumblr media
So, Alan and Sam were very intimidated by eachother, and it was obvious to the folks around them.
Alan put up an angry front because he was like, "Ah, shit. I'm in love with him." so, he acted like a dick every chance he got,,, for the first few days.
After that "phase" was over, he began to act mysteriously nice and playful around Sam, always wearing a rare, wolfish grin and standing right between Sam and Edgar, instead of being toe-to-to next to his brother.
When Sam would meet up with the Frog Brothers at the comic store, he would greet Alan with a bear hug and he never failed to make Alan freeze up.
This went on for some time, before Sammy then announced to them (after coming out to his family first) that he was gay.
Edgar 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 to act shocked, but he failed miserably. Sam just rolled his eyes in annoyance at him.
Alan, however, stared at him with a blank expression, but on the inside, police sirens were blaring and he was dancing.
So, needless to say, Alan was 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 happy.
Not much really happened between any of them after the coming out, besides the Frog Brothers becoming more protective and asking him about his type.
Sam would make eye contact with Alan before blushing and looking down, stating that he liked dark hair and pretty smiles.
Alan would bug his eyes out, his heart racing. "Yeah, well, I like blue eyes." he would reply, literally trying not to screech.
Edgar then just sort of leaves the two alone- he already knows what's about to happen and he doesn't wanna laugh at the wrong time.
Edgar has a bad problem of that :/
But, Sam and Alan just sort of stare at eachother for a little while, a thick, awkward silence between the two teens.
Sam then clears his throat and bobs his head slightly, "Is there something that you may wanna tell me? Or..." he asks him.
Alan's eyes water up and he looks around the store briefly, making sure that no one was staring at the two. There wasn't anyone around them, but it was still packed.
He sniffles, and nods his head fastly.
"I...really, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 like you, Sammy." He then fiddles with his thumbs, waiting for a response.
Sam then smiles at him and claps him on the shoulder before pulling him into a crushing hug, relief the only thing that the two are feeling (besides the happiness).
A few weeks later, right before summer ended, the two then made it official, but not without Edgar's and Michael's "blessings".
Michael scoffed and told Sam that he didn't care as long as he was careful as always, and Edgar was confused because he thought that the two had already made it official, but he still gave him his "blessings".
One night, out on the Boardwalk, Alan ran off from Sam's side, telling him he was gonna be right back, and that it wouldn't be long.
Sam pouted but still let him leave.
Alan raced down to the comic store, where Edgar was waiting outside with two Ring Pops, scowling, "You said I wouldn't have to stand out here for long >:(" And Alan promised him that he would make it up to him later, snatching the candy before running off back to Sam.
Sam gave him a worried expression on why he was so out of breath from running that short-distance, but Alan then thrusted a Ring Pop into his hand, "WillyoubemyRingPophusband,SamEmerson?" He rushed out.
Sam cocked his head to the side in confusion and Alan just crumbled, "Will you be my Ring Pop husband, Sam Emerson?" He wheezed out.
Sam's eyes widened and he started laughing, throwing his head back from the question. "Yes, I would love to be!"
Cue them wearing Ring Pops the entire night before Lucy had to come pick Sam up, and that was when they both had to part (but not before they hugged 🥺)
Oh God, Sam is a cuddler.
Alan had never really had that much affection before he met Sam, so when Sam asks him if he could hold him, Alan always looks scared.
But, Sam doesn't wait for an answer and instead just lazily drapes his arms around Alan's stomach, and Alan just very awkwardly pats his shoulder, not quite knowing what to do.
And when they want to have a sleepover, Sam makes Alan come over, because Alan and Edgar's house is not,,, okay-
And while staying there, Alan would restrain from calling Lucy "Mom", since he knew how Sam would react.
He actually becomes very close to Grandpa Emerson, who would sometimes even offer him some Oreos and a root beer, which he would take at every offer.
So, yeah :,) Grandpa Emerson and Alan are best buds.
But anyways, Sam and Alan lay on the floor of Sam's room, since his bed is constantly messy and he's too lazy to change it, and they lay their sleeping mats right next to eachother :,)
Sam doesn't get any sleep because Alan has his knees buried into his back and is snoring right into his ear (which he's sort of okay with, but also not?) so Sam then just wriggles a little ways from him and gives Alan his space.
But of course, he fucking scoots closer to him and puts his knees back exactly where they were LAMKSJDJJ
Sam's fine (not really) with it though
Alan often shoplifts luxurious chocolate for Sam and wraps it up in pink, arcade themed wrapping for him and then would drop it off on his doorstep.
Sam knows damn well that Alan doesn't pay for it, but he could care less because- chocolate is chocolate.
They both go on shoplifting sprees together, although they both have enough money to pay for it. They also will hit the grocery store and steal some random trinkets for Edgar :)
This continued for a little while before Lucy got a call from a goth store saying that her sons were caught stealing some jewelry and a Pink Floyd t-shirt.
After that, Lucy made them stay home, and not go out without Michael's supervision (which crushed both of them, because that was their alone time).
They both introduced eachother to new music!!
Alan only listens to 60's psychedelic rock or 80's hiphop/rap, while Sam listens to hard rock and any kind of synthpop (*cough* Blondie *cough*)
So, they would listen to some LL Cool J and Salt-N-Peppa, and then Motley Crue followed by Blondie, so it's like a rollercoaster inside Sam's house when Alan is over.
But, Edgar is glad that Sam introduced his brother to more music, because he only listens to the same 4 songs 24/7-
And when they get done listening to music, they sit next to eachother, holding hands, and talking about where they would go when they graduate :,)
They both made the same mutual decision to go to state uni, so they wouldn't be apart, and then time would tell the rest

This week on Great Albums: one of very few albums that I think is truly perfect. John Foxx’s second solo LP, The Garden, is a masterpiece of Medieval mysticism, romantic longing, and modern electronics. Transcript below the break!
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! In this installment, I’ll be looking at a classic sophomore album, and one which epitomizes the principle of taking one’s sound in a different direction the second time around: The Garden by John Foxx, first released in 1981.
While The Garden was Foxx’s second release as a solo artist, it’s also his fifth LP overall, as he had spent the late 1970s fronting the original incarnation of Ultravox. Foxx’s Ultravox was an eclectic mix of influences from glam, punk, and, of course, electronic pioneers like Kraftwerk, but it would be the latter of these ideas that dominated Foxx’s solo career. His 1980 solo debut, Metamatic, is some of the purest, starkest, and harshest minimal synth around, and remains one of the most iconic early works of the subgenre.
Music: “Underpass”
If you want more like Metamatic from Foxx, you’ll want to skip ahead to the 1990s, because he turned his back on this thin and aggressively inorganic sound remarkably quickly. While he would produce several more LPs in the 1980s, the group of them seems to grow progressively lighter and softer, with less blistering analogue synth, and more radio-friendly love themes. But while Foxx’s third and fourth efforts are often panned, The Garden has actually won nearly as many fans over the years as Metamatic, proving itself to be powerful in its own ways, despite its radically different aesthetic. Where Metamatic dealt in brutalist city blocks and Ballardian psycho-sexuality, The Garden takes place in moldering cathedrals, embracing Gothic splendour and (imagined) Medieval emotionality.
Music: “Europe After the Rain”
“Europe After the Rain” opens the album, and also served as its lead single, becoming a relatively minor hit in the charts. As we hear it, we immediately become aware that Foxx has abandoned the instrumental palette of Metamatic, made almost exclusively with an ARP 2600 synthesiser, in favour of something more lush. On “Europe After the Rain,” traditional instruments like acoustic guitar and piano are impossible to ignore, though the constant bass synth ensures we never forget Foxx’s roots either. It also seems to be a major thematic leap away from Metamatic, with its tender and romantic feel. Still, that may not necessarily be all there is to it--the song is presumably named after a famous painting of the same title, by the Surrealist Max Ernst, executed in the early 1940s as World War II was first beginning. Ernst’s painting is a sort of apocalyptic vision, in which crumbling structures are overtaken by vegetation, and two figures wander through it, seemingly passing by one another. Perhaps Foxx’s “Europe After the Rain” is also a theme for a devastated landscape, its lovers meeting again the last survivors of some nuclear holocaust? Maybe it isn’t too far away from the themes of crushing modernity employed on Metamatic after all.
Note, as well, the emphasis on “Europe,” conceptually--The Garden is, at least partially, a sort of search for a new European cultural identity. The Garden fuses electronics, and hence Europe’s characteristic technological achievements, with a love of more traditional European cultural ideals, namely, the aesthetics of Medieval Christianity. For evidence of that idea, look no further than its most obvious apotheosis, the track “Pater Noster.”
Music: “Pater Noster”
“Pater Noster” is, of course, a setting of the Latin-language translation of the so-called “Our Father” or Lord’s Prayer, one of the most popular and well-known texts in Christianity. “Pater Noster” is the album’s most obvious love letter to the Middle Ages, but an informed listen will show that it has little to do with actual music from that era--I actually could forgive the synthesisers, which might be analogized to the role of church organs, but the percussion-propelled nature of the track is what really makes it feel ahistorical to me. Despite the religious themes of The Garden, Foxx always averred not being any sort of authentic believer in religion or God, and maintained that he was interested in the traditions of the Church purely on aesthetic grounds. Whether you think this sort of appropriation is appropriate and respectful or not, it’s certainly one of the album’s prominent themes, and part of what makes it feel as unique as it does. While I’ve emphasized the themes of romanticism and religiosity, it’s also worth noting that The Garden is not a complete break from Foxx’s earlier works, and in its return to a more guitar-driven sound, it often winds up riffing on something not unlike punk.
Music: “Systems of Romance”
Astute followers of Foxx will have already noticed that the track “Systems of Romance” shares its title with the third and final LP he released with Ultravox, in 1979. Apparently, it was written that much earlier, though it wouldn’t be seen to completion until several years later. Combining a hard-driving guitar, played by Foxx’s Ultravox bandmate Robin Simon, with the inscrutable, sensual, elemental lyricism Foxx employs throughout his mid-80s oeuvre, the track “Systems of Romance” really feels like a bridge between 70s art rock and 80s avant-synth-pop, moreso than anything else on the album. Much as “Systems of Romance” extracts a certain prettiness from punk, so does the aesthetically-oriented “Night Suit,” which plays with appearance, deception, and masculinity.
Music: “Night Suit”
“Night Suit” is the track on The Garden that I feel is the most exemplary of its own time period, a mysterious ode to a mystical garment that could almost feel at home on an album by Visage. The Garden is interested in “romantic” themes, but “Night Suit” truly feels at peace among the New Romantics. It’s got some of the most “believable” rock influences, with a prominent guitar riff from Simon, and yet its emphasis on the power of fashion and appearances, destructive, and perhaps even supernatural, is hard to imagine in a genuine punk context. As it implores us to “be someone” or “be no-one,” it’s easy to fit “Night Suit” into one of the major themes throughout Foxx’s career: the tranquility and liberation of personal anonymity. Why is the “Night Suit” a suit in the first place? The song wouldn’t make sense if it didn’t deal with a garment that is also a non-garment, something to wear that feels default, neutral, and unassuming--not to mention classically masculine.
On the cover of The Garden, the main thing we see is, well, a garden. Despite Foxx’s more obvious personal presence on the albums before and after The Garden, it’s easy to miss him here, dwarfed by the scale of nature that surrounds him. It’s almost like the album is more meant to be about this place, and the concept of “the garden,” than it is Foxx as a person, or any particular perspective of his.
While the actual capital-R Romantics were deeply interested in the “sublime,” and the scenes and moments in which mankind faces its vulnerability and insignificance when compared to the natural world, it’s also worth remembering that a “garden,” by definition, is really not a natural space at all, but rather one which is arranged by human hands. Even if this composition resembles those of Romantic painters, I think it’s worth looking earlier in the European past to interpret this one. Gardens were one of the most prominent symbols in Medieval literature, and scholars have suggested that they serve as symbols for sensuality, romance, and the yoni itself. Through the association with the Garden of Eden, gardens often represent a sort of lost, but longed-for paradise, and a return to innocence which is as tantalizing as it is impossible. In particular, “Europe After the Rain,” with its theme of lovers meeting again after the passage of some time, seems to connect with this idea.
In hindsight, The Garden really stands alone in Foxx’s career, a masterpiece whose precise style he would never attempt again. We might say it became that Garden of Eden, to which the artist could never return. While Foxx’s interest in Medieval spirituality would return on ambient works like Cathedral Oceans, and he would occasionally return to love songs with an electronic backing, the precise combination of lovelorn bardistry with a flair for the baroque that appears on The Garden remains totally singular. Foxx’s follow-up to this album, 1983’s The Golden Section, narrows its thematic focus towards poppy love songs, and its instrumental focus, likewise, is that of a fairly unremarkable mid-80s synth-pop record. But at the same time, I like to think that tracks like “The Hidden Man” manage to maintain a sense of the mystical.
Music: “The Hidden Man”
My favourite track on The Garden is “Walk Away.” While it lacks the severe and tragic grandeur of the album’s title track, which closes the album on a lofty note, “Walk Away” shares some of its delicate qualities, reviving the soft piano that we heard on “Europe After the Rain.” Thematically, “Walk Away” seems to deal with fragility and transience, and the grave significance that a brief, passing moment may have--which makes that “delicateness” feel all the more poignant in context. Its call-and-response outro, featuring one of Foxx’s most anguished vocal performances, really makes it a stand-out. That’s everything for today--as always, thanks for listening!
