Strasky listened to him, his brief moment of anger disappearing to be replaced with his usual cheery demeanor as he realized Bishop's earlier statement about how he'd left Strohmeier wasn't meant to be mean, just an example that he was clearly able to know when a situation called for him to leave for his own safety.
"Well, maybe one day you'll call me friend too. Not like I'll be dying anytime soon. I lost my right to die when I introduced structure gel to my dead body." He'd probably be around for the end of this world as well since when structure gel infects someone, dying is no longer a luxury you can have no matter how mangled you become it will ensure you are still breathing. Even if he removed his chip, the body would still be alive it would just lack brain activity, so he still wouldn't consider that dying if simply putting the chip back in brought him back.
"I try not to think about what I am... It never goes anywhere good. Mainly I feel like an intruder in this body despite the fact I am a copy of this body's brain in a digital format. My skin is not my own, and I want to pull it off. Which is a stressing thought so I can't entertain it or I might overload the chip and that'll be the end of me. It's probably just a combination of being in the Omnitool for too long and the traumas of PATHOS-II causing my discomfort." Not that he could really get to the bottom of why he felt the way he did as it would fry the chip, so he would just have to accept what was the most likely answer for now until he found a way to address the issue safely or the feeling went away as he adjusted to being himself again.
He looked at his arm as the structure gel covered it and turned the end of his fingers into claws, he didn't like the idea of fighting but it was better it be him then someone else as they'd have to be infected with structure gel to be like him, and even then there was no guarantee they'd still be themselves after the infection claimed them. "I suppose with enough practice I could turn myself into something that was barely recognizable as human, much like the Leviathan and how we only can theorize it used to be a giant squid." He turned his hand around as a glowing blue eye opened in the center of his palm before the structure gel disappeared back under his skin. "And the structure gel has proven it will latch onto alien technology meaning a structure gel monster would be very effective against aliens as it could be programmed to take over their tech." Which also meant any invaders would have to take the extra time to figure out how to get around the structure gels abilities and hope it wouldn't adapt to whatever they came up with, meaning the gel would act as a very effective deterrent against future attacks.
He took a moment to think over how else humanity in this world could better be protected then he smiled a bit as he remembered the identity of the scan on the chip, which he'd been able to figure out from the small remnants of it as he took over.
He walked over to the crate and pulled the Cortex chip that had been the replacement eye out before he walked back over to Bishop, holding it out to him. "If you plan to keep the human race safe from itself, you'll need this. Mark Sarang was one of three Carthage employees, he may not be Johan Ross, but he knows a lot more about the WAU then I do. Enough that you'll know what it looks like just in case someone starts building one here." He felt it was something important to know, who knows what the WAU might do if it came to exist in a world with magic and aliens, it was definitely something he didn't want to think about too much.
He considered his identifying the person on the chip as repaying Bishop for being nice, he was sure the man would appreciate him giving him useful things over physical contact. Strasky knew that physical contact wasn't everyone's thing and did his best to figure out something they did appreciate as an alternative.
Strasky watched Bishop test out the new weapon, he was glad the man seemed pleased with how it was operating and the way it assembled itself.
"Why am I important then? You have what you want from me, I should be expendable by now." He frowned, he was a bit upset about the implication he left Strohmeier to die because he hadn't.
"I didn't leave Strohm willingly, I accepted it would be better if I left with the rest of the group and that it'd most likely just get in the way if I went with him. So I left thinking it would help Strohm's odds of coming to meet with us on Omicron. But that never happened, for anyone... The group I was with perished outside Omicron, and Strohm is still alive... He's in the basement of Theta... Wan is dead however." He shook his head, he didn't know exactly what happened but it seemed Strohm was comatose and Wan had died, only Strohmeier could answer that question.
"You don't care about me, why pretend now? I can make it look like it was entirely my fault I died so you wouldn't receive any of the blame of that's why you're worried about letting me perish." He refused to believe Bishop suddenly cared about him, sure he cared what happened to Bishop but that was just a part of who he was. He cared about everyone even if they didn't care about him.

writer god, so many questions about sophie's wings have hit me out of nowhere this way too-early-morning. are they live views of the void?? are they a still image of the void?? are the void parts sealed inaccessibly between the bee wing material?? or are they built in portals to the void??? could her friends have sophie lie really still on the floor with her wings spread out behind her and just. jump??? into?? the void??? do the void parts of her wings enhance her teleporting?? how. how overpowered are her wings-
Treasure! Hello welcome back! I was just writing the wings au so what a perfect time to answer this
Sophie's wings are kinda like a *shrugging motion* vibe, because they just. Who knows what's up with them (not me, that's for sure). I do have a kinda vague idea of how they work, but there's no like "these are the RULES and that's IT" kind of thing
I don't think of them as live views of the void, but more a piece of the void that has become a permanent part of her body (unless her wings get cut/ripped off or are removed some other way). So they're a "live" view of the void in the sense that the colors shift within the wings and are active and whatnot, but it's not telling or indicative of any other part of the void existing between everything. It's a piece of the void that no longer exists in the void, if that makes sense. Except I guess its very nature being void technically makes wherever it is void, so in that way it does exist in the void.
But they are not still! The colors aren't fixed or anything, but imagine more like...how do I explain this. You know that science experiment with the milk and food coloring and dish soap? Imagine all the elements of the void but like that and at a much slower pace, like a gradual perceptible shift. Everything melding and merging together and swirling with each other to create a really pretty effect
And the void aspect is like...interwoven with the bee wing material? It's not seal, and her wings aren't purely void, there is very much still that delicate insect wing there, but it's like...special insect wing. Think of it like the void has become a part of the wings in the same way the echoes became a part of her and Fitz. Changing things and leaving a mark, it's just this one is physically visible and won't fade. That's how I think of it at least
So they're not built in portals, because there's more than just void and it's pretty inaccessible. If someone tried to climb through her wings, well first they wouldn't fit--you could probably fit an infant in there or something though, like just dunk it through--but second they'd get stopped by the material of the wing because it may be delicate but it is solid. I wonder what it would be like if they were portals though...like just stick your hand through her back and grab around for something while she's just there, so over it.
As for enhancing her teleporting, that's not something I've really considered but it's an interesting idea! It's more so that I tried to make he wings a representation of who each character already is rather than something that enhances who they are. So for Sophie the small feathers drew on the whole alicorn thing, the void on her uniqueness and individual thought, the bee wings because she's at the center of all this and doing so much for everything like a busy bee. That was my general reasoning for hers, at least, though other interpretations and associations are just as valid and interesting!!
So my intention wasn't for them to overpower her, but I do think that's an interesting mechanic to give them! Probably too late in the au for me to be like "hey here's another new detail about this thing that's been here all along," but it's still fun to think about
and also just for fun, here's a quote from the next chapter!
Sophie was tempted to tell him that she was always panicking, but that wasn't true. Something she was crying instead, like right now.

good little girl || mark lee
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1.8K
Type: angst, fluff, not really mature themes but maybe you'd disagree 🤷🏼‍♀️
Warning: a little cursing, mentions of alcohol, i can't think of anything else
Description: Mark is a bad boy, but you're really not so convinced
A/N: lol, this is inspired by the song "Good Little Girl" from Adventure Time :) Also, I've been informed the ending is rude, so should I do a part 2???
♡♡♡♡
"I still don't see why you want to meet up with Mark and Jeno," you said to Yeji as you walked down the road with her to the bar the two boys said to meet them at. "They're bad news."
She grinned at you. "That's half the fun," she teased, making you giggle softly. "Besides, they're not so bad and Jeno is actually really sweet to me."
The way she talked about him...there was a twinkle in her eyes. Who were you to deny her that happiness? You would support her and Jeno and be there for her when she needed you.
"Still, why did I have to come?"
A snort left her mouth. "Because you and Mark clearly have the hots for each other. I want you to give him a chance."
You didn't really care to give him a chance. Mark Lee was not someone you wanted to get involved with. If you ever brought him home to your parents, they'd probably have an aneurysm. He just wasn't your ideal guy.
"Shit!" Jeno cursed as he and Mark ran out of the bar just as you and Yeji were arriving.
The two of you stopped, wondering what was happening. They rushed to you and Mark's hand wrapped around yours. "Run!" he instructed.
Jeno and Yeji were already ahead of you. You ran along with Mark, not asking questions. You could hear yelling behind you and you looked to see a small group of scary looking guys chasing after you.
"Hey," Mark said, his voice breathy from running. You looked at him. "Don't look at them. Focus on running."
You nodded, listening to his words. At the top of the hill, you guys met Jeno and Yeji. The guys were, surprisingly, pretty slow. Maybe they were drunk. "Okay, we need to lose them," Jeno panted.
Mark nodded in agreement, glancing to make sure you guys still had time. "Let's split up and meet at the spot."
"Got it."
With that, Jeno and Yeji went left and Mark once again took your hand, leading you right. "Mark, where are we going?" you asked as he pulled you along and you blindly followed him. Your legs had been cold earlier from wearing a skirt, but all the running certainly changed that and you were glad you had worn shorts under.
He glanced behind you guys, seeing a couple of the guys spotted him. "Don't worry," he merely said, not telling you they were coming. "We'll be okay."
He led you guys into a convenience store. "Mark?" the guy behind the counter questioned.
"We need to hide, Jungwoo."
The boy nodded, unlocking the supply closet for you two. Once you were inside, he shut it and locked it from the outside. The space was pretty tight. There were metal shelves, a desk, a computer showing the security cameras, and a chair. You watched as the guys rushed in, beginning to look around. They went to Jungwoo, who pointed in the opposite direction in which you guys came. Nodding their heads, they left.
Mark didn't seem to care. "Can't we leave now?" you asked.
He shook his head. "Not yet. We need to give them time to get away from us so we can leave. They could always come back, too."
This was clearly not his first time running from scary looking thugs. "Why are they even chasing us? What did you guys do?"
"They were creeping on this girl and Jeno decided to grab the stupid beer nozzle from behind the bar and spray them," he informed you.
Well, at least Jeno had good intentions. You hoped he and Yeji were okay. Turning to look at him, you caught him staring at your legs. You wanted to call him out, but you thought doing so in a supply closet was a bad idea...especially with the lack of space.
After another five minutes or so, he texted Jungwoo to let you guys out. "Here, wear this," Mark said, grabbing a bucket hat and putting it on your head. He gave Jungwoo some money for it. "Thanks for your help."
"No problem. You need to start being careful, Mark," he told him. "I'll text you if I see them again."
Mark smiled before you two left. "Where are we going? You guys just mentioned some spot," you commented, sticking close to Mark.
He glanced back, relieved to see no one was there. "It's just this old apartment complex Jeno's cousin owns. We have a unit where we go sometimes if we're being chased or just need to escape life," he informed you.
You nodded and followed him there, hoping Yeji and Jeno would already be there.
♡♡♡♡
Thankfully, the two were waiting outside for you guys. "I'm so glad you're okay!" Yeji exclaimed as the two of you hugged. "How'd you guys get away?"
"We hid in a supply closet at this convenience store," you told her. "His friend was working and helped us."
She nodded, glad Mark had protected you. Jeno felt a raindrop hit his head before a few more began to fall. "It's gonna start coming down good, we should get inside," he said, leading the way. "We should probably stay here for the night. We don't know how long those guys will try looking for us or if they got friends to help. It'll be safer this way."
Yeji seemed more than happy with the idea and you certainly weren't going to leave her alone with them, so you silently gave in.
The unit was pretty empty, but you weren't surprised. It wasn't where they lived, it was just like an emergency escape place. Jeno and Yeji disappeared to one room, so you were able to figure out you'd be staying with Mark.
"Come on," he said, leading you to his room.
Just like the rest of the unit, the room was basically empty. There was a mattress on the floor with a blanket, a guitar in the corner of the room, and what looked like a lighter by the window. Maybe it was for his cigarettes.
The rain was really coming down. Mark went to turn the lights on, but nothing. Of course the storm caused the power to go out...as if the night wasn't already awful.
Going to the closet, he grabbed something. It sounded like glass. When he turned around, you saw a few candles of varying sizes. He went to the window, grabbing the lighter before setting the candles down on the ground. He lit them, bringing a nice, soft light into the room.
Walking to the window, you watched the rain pour, kind of glad you guys had come there. Turning to Mark, you caught him staring at your legs again.
"They're just legs," you told him, tugging at your skirt.
He glanced up at you from the floor, grinning slightly. "They're distracting," he told you, standing up with a soft grunt. "Here, wear these."
He pulled some sweatpants from the closet, holding them out to you. You really didn't want to wear them. "Wear them or freeze," he told you softly.
With a sigh, you took them. "Turn around," you told him.
"Fine, fine."
You quickly took off the shorts and skirt, pulling the pants on. They were comfortable and you were actually glad you took them. Mark took you skirt and shorts, folding them and putting them in the closet before he took his own pants off and put some sweats on, removing his leather jacket as well.
He walked over, grabbing his guitar before going to the mattress. Sitting down, he leaned against the wall before he began strumming. You hadn't known he played, truthfully.
"Good little girl, always picking a fight with me. You know that I'm bad, but you're spending the night with me. What do you want from my world? You're a good little girl," he sang as he strummed.
You rolled your eyes, but you were secretly surprised that he could sing. "You know, you're not so bad, Mark Lee. I can tell you're not," you told him as he continued strumming. "You probably told Jeno to spray those guys."
Smart girl. How did you figure it out? "Not so bad? I see mothers cower on the streets when they see me. Professors cry when they see me on their class roster. I'm not good news."
Okay, he was clearly exaggerating. "Why try to seem like a bad guy? What's wrong with being good?"
He didn't respond and merely smirked before singing, "And they're looking right through your anatomy. Into your deepest fears, baby, I'm not from here. I'm from the Nightosphere. To me, you're clear, transparent. You got a thing for me girl, it's apparent."
A soft laugh left his mouth as he saw your expression. Really, you were just internally kicking yourself for even thinking he was cute. Mark Lee with his stupid, wavy blonde hair, almost innocent eyes, and adorable smile.
You walked over and sat next to him, making him stop strumming. "Why is your hair this color?" you asked, your hand going to the blonde locks and fiddling with them slightly.
"It was a bet and I lost."
Looking into his eyes, you didn't like the way he was looking at you. Before, when he was staring at your legs, there was lust. This time, however, his expression was soft. It freaked you out even more somehow.
You asked softly, "What was the bet?"
He grinned slightly. "That I wouldn't fall for you," he practically whispered. His eyes flickered to your lips, wanting to know how they felt on his own...how you tasted.
It was late, you were tired and delusional, so that was your excuse for kissing him. Truthfully, he was surprised, but he didn't argue and kissed you back. Your lips were soft and you tasted like strawberries.
♡♡♡♡
When Mark woke up the next morning, you were gone. His sweatpants were folded up next to him and your skirt and shorts were no longer in the closet. Leaving the room, he found Yeji and Jeno in the kitchen. They seemed happy, but their expressions fell a bit when they saw Mark.
"Sorry, Mark, she said she had to go," Yeji told him. She wasn't sure what happened, but she figured something had happened between you two.
He nodded his head, trying to pretend like he didn't care. Going back to the room, he let out a sigh as he sat down on the mattress. Why did his chest hurt?
Why was he upset you were gone? Shouldn't he be happy? You guys had made out the night before and he woke up without having to deal with you. Wasn't that a bad guy's dream? Getting what he wanted without consequences?
If that was the case, why wasn't he happy? Why was he wishing you were still there? And why did his chest hurt so much? Certainly he wasn't experiencing heartbreak...right?

"Get. Out," Jason says, glaring at the mobster in front of him. "Aren't you supposed to be in a prison cell?"
"I was released on bail and wanted to see how-"
"Say her name and you'll be the one in the hospital bed."
"Is that a threat?"
"A promise," he smiles fakely, enjoying the fact he's the one with power in this situation. This sick bastard is the reason that his... Carly is traumatized and hurt.
"Please, leave," Carly requests softly. For a minute, Jason almost forgot she was there. He immediately goes back in his chair and wipes away her tears, which are coming fairly frequently. "I want him out of here and back in his cell."
"You heard the woman. Get out or I'll have security remove you."
"I own part of this hospital, Mr. Morgan. I'm on the board-"
"Not anymore," Michael answers, walking in with his kids and Willow. "Last night, the board took a vote. ELQ bought out your shares and the board decided you're no longer a part of it. So if I were you, I'd get out of here while you can still move."
"Are you threatening me, Mr. Corinthos?" Cyrus asks, amused. "That won't fly with anyone, really."
"You made a mistake, underestimating him," Willow chimes in. "I'd leave pretty quickly if I were you. After all, we know you're going back to Pentonville, where I look forward to you rotting in a prison cell until you die a slow, painful death."
"Ms. Tait-"
"It's Mrs. Corinthos, actually," she says, glaring at him while showing her engagement and wedding rings. "Because, you see, I love Michael and he loves me. That's what these beautiful rings mean. Something I doubt you'll ever be able to experience. Then again, maybe prisoners like knowing that their fellow prisoner is a kidnapper and rapist. Maybe not. I guess you'll find out."
"I have no reason to leave," Cyrus answers a non-existent question. "There's no need for me to. I just wanted to check on Carly. I do hope I can call you that, Mrs. Corinthos?"
"No," she answers, voice weak and tears still streaming down her face. "Please, leave. You know what you did to me. So do the cops, so does everyone else in this room. Enjoy your last few weeks of freedom if you insist, but otherwise, Cyrus, get the hell out of my room."
When he still refuses to move, Jason presses the "call" button near Carly's bed and Epiphany enters the room. "Mr. Renault. Unless you need medical attention, get out of this hospital."
"Nurse Johnson," he greets. "Nice to see you."
"Security!" Epiphany shouts instead of answering his greeting. "Cyrus is in 3115!"
A few moments later, a security guard enters and escorts Cyrus out, much to the man's protests. "I'm not doing anything wrong by visiting a friend!"
Epiphany casts a glance towards Carly, "You want a sedative or something?"
"No, thanks," the blonde responds, noticing her grandkids are in the room and breaking into a fake smile. "Hey Wiley, Ophelia! Did you two have fun playing with Donna and Avery yesterday?"
"Grandma, why are you crying?" Wiley asks. "And why aren't you at home?"
"I got a really bad booboo and so I'm stuck in here for a little while. Don't worry, bud, I'll be out of here and playing with you two again as soon as I can. Maybe we'll go get some ice cream to celebrate when I get out, how's that sound?" Carly asks her grandson, simplifying it greatly.
"Yay! Ice cream!" Wiley cheers while his sister just smiles.
"Hey, Mr. Wiley, I think you have to get to school," Michael says after glancing at his watch.
"But I want to help Grandma's boo-boos feel better!" He protests.
"Grandma needs her rest, Wiley. Tell you what, maybe your dad will take you here after school and you can tell her all about your day. How's that sound?" Jason offers, compromising.
"Will you make sure she gets her rest, Jason?" Wiley asks and they laugh at the young boy's concern.
"Yes, I will. But you've got to get off to school first."
"Okay. Bye bye, Grandma and Jason! I'll be back after school."
He waves as Michael takes him out of there, Ophelia still with Willow. "Ophelia, do you wanna say bye to her? Say bye bye," Willow urges, smiling.
Silence follows that. "She's being rude, sorry about that," she jokes before bringing her out to join Michael and Wiley in the car.
As soon as the door closes behind Willow, the silent tears multiply and Carly's loudly sobbing. "How did he get out, Jason? They promised me he'd go to jail, that he'd never see the light of day again. I know it's the PCPD, but they made a promise to me! And now he's walking around town, free to see me and make me feel like I'm back in that room and he's about to-" she trails off at one point, sobs overtaking her vocal cords.
"I don't know. I'm calling Diane; this isn't making any sense."
"No need to call, Jason. I'm right here. Heard Cyrus got let out?"
"He paid a visit to us, actually, only a few minutes ago," Carly says, abruptly ending her sobs.
"Well, the DA is going to take this case. Which means Robert Scorpio is your lawyer. I'm going to be assisting him, however, and I expect that Cyrus will be put away rather quickly. If he doesn't plead guilty, than you'll go to trial. His arraignment is happening tomorrow and he's out on bail until then. After that, he will be sent to Pentonville to either await trial or start serving his sentence," Diane summarizes quickly. "Carly, when are you expected to get out of here?"
"In a couple of days, but I think they'd let me out for a court date."
"You're not leaving until the doctor's deem it safe," Jason counters quickly. "If you can't go to the arraignment, I will. I'll tell you exactly what happened."
"Well if the doctors say I can go to court-"
"Look. I'll talk to the nurses and figure out what's going on here. You two can fight about this later. In the meantime, you need to be prepared for the possibility he'll plead not guilty and take this to trial." Diane interjects. "Robert will be by later today to discuss this with you."
"If he pleads not guilty and we go to trial, how fast can we get one?" Jason asks.
"A couple of weeks, probably. Which means keeping a low profile. No business talk, no crazy ideas. Just a coffee importer and a victim of what Cyrus did to you," Diane warns. "You two don't exactly have the best reputation."
"Hey, I'm a respectable businesswoman and he's a respectable businessman. We'll be fine," Carly smiles and Diane cocks an eyebrow at Jason.
"We won't do anything stupid."
"Good. I'm going to go talk to the nurses. Carly, rest up. We'll want you at court tomorrow." Diane says before leaving, her heels clacking along the tile.
"Don't tell me you want me to stay in the hospital," Carly says, starting up that argument again.
"I don't. But if it's the best way for you to heal-"
"It's not. I'm already bored to death and, as much as I enjoy your company, I want to be at home. Or at work. Back to running the world, you know? Not cooped up in this hospital bed, screaming every few hours because I feel like I'm back in that room above Jake's, which used to be such a fun spot but now it makes me want to die inside, thinking about it. Thinking about what he did, it taints almost all of our memories there and I think that's the worst part of it," the blonde admits, smiling through her tears.
"I can think, you know, about how we got our start, and when I focus on just you, it makes it all seem so much easier. When I don't, and I let my mind wander, somehow I end up thinking about what Cyrus did. I can't even indulge in nostalgia without thinking about him, Jason. The physical, yeah I'm sore but I'll be fine. Eventually, I won't have any physical mark of it. But the emotional one, what if it never goes away? What if whenever I think of us, and that little room, I always end up thinking about Cyrus? What then?"
"Then you'll just have to think of our other memories. At the penthouse, at any of your houses, with Michael, at the hospital, any of the years worth of other memories," he offers. "They're not our only good memories, Carly. They're just a few."
"My boy on the side, remember?" She asks and they laugh. "Robin couldn't find out and neither could Tony."
"Yeah," he smiles. "We were determined to never speak to each other outside of the bar and that room. It was pretty much our only rule."
"I never did like following rules."
"Not even the ones you came up with."
"Well, if I'd followed the rules, then you wouldn't know me nearly as well and you'd be leading a sad life without me in it. You wouldn't have nearly as much fun without me," she says confidently.
"I'd also have way less headaches."
"And be dead by now."
"Yeah, probably."
"I think I've earned a thank you."
"Thank you, Carly."
"You're welcome." Smiling, she realizes something. "Hey, I just realized that you didn't kiss me that nightmare."
"Did you really want me to kiss you in front of Cyrus?" He asks.
"It would've drove him nuts."
"Yeah, well Michael, Willow, and your grandkids were in here too. Michael's already barely not killing us for having sex, I don't feel like testing that."
"No one's here now."
"Is that your way of telling me to-" he gets cut off by the feeling of her kissing him.
They pull apart a few moments later, Carly having a satisfied smile on her face. "So, how long does this whole kissing me every time I have a nightmare thing last?"
"Until we decide to stop it," he answers simply, refusing to label whatever the hell is going on here. At least, none of that until she's more recovered from this, maybe when Cyrus is behind bars.
To be continued after I actually do school because fuck the education system

Scrabble Heart.
Author's Note: I don't write James fics ever, but this idea came to me and he was the only person I could imagine pulling this off! I also need you to excuse any mistakes regarding the rules for Scrabble. I played once, over ten years ago, and cried because I was so awful at it! I've had a quick Google of the rules, and I know I've forgotten about the double points on the first go, but we can forget all about that when we see the outcome of this game right? I hope!
Tagging: I don't really have a tag list for James, so i'm sorry if I've tagged you and you aren't interested. @zigortega4life @emerald-bijou @littlegreenmoo @krsnlove
"I miss Zack. He would never pick on me like you have. Relentlessly. All day long.”
“Oh boo hoo. Cry me a river. Who do you think planted this little idea in my head in the first place?” Kaitlyn retorts, not even glancing up from where she's picking at her worn down, stubby nails.
A sharp hiss of breath, grinding teeth and a tight ball of scrunched up fingers under the table was her only response initially, a half hearted threat eventually following. "When he gets back I’m gonna...”
“Shower me with kisses? Squeeze me so tight I literally explode?” A giddy squeal from the entrance to the coffee shop interrupted her.
“ZACK?! What are you doing here?”
“Did you really think I’d miss one of the biggest nights of my best friend’s life?”
A sharp slap sounded out as the palms of Zack and Kaitlyn met in unison for a high five. Both wearing matching smug smiles. Both watching on as their friend sagged against a corner seat.
“Good job Liao. She’s a tough one to crack but with a little perseverance we’ll have her coming round to our way of thinking in no time.”
Zack slid into the seat next to her, bringing an arm up to hang loosely around her shoulders. Her nostrils flared at the overwhelming and intensely overpowering scent that followed. Not what she had grown accustomed to. Zack smelt fresh, fruity, exotic. Shrinking back slightly, she eyed him cautiously, taking note of his face. Flecked with a smattering of fresh freckles, and the tone of his skin; a shade pinker than what was probably deemed desirable. She flinched at the sudden thud of Zack's backpack tumbling to the floor.
Whilst one eyebrow remained in place, higher than the other, her hands betrayed her, instinctively grabbing at thin air greedily, eager to snap up the thick slab of chocolate she could see poking out the top of the bag.
“Present!” He exclaimed, still not making a move, eerily still and watching her closely. She swallowed hard, suddenly on edge.
“Did you get abducted by aliens whilst you were away or something? One, you are being really weird right now. Like, really weird. Two, the Zack I know would buy chocolate as a gift for me, but find it too irresistible and end up eating it himself then palm me off with a fridge magnet. And three, am I really supposed to believe that you got a tan if that’s what you want to call it, from a last minute trip around Europe?”
“Okay well one, if I really was abducted by aliens I’d be selling my story and making my millions right now instead of wasting my time here with you. Two, that was one time that I ate your chocolate and i’ve spent the last five years apologising for my mistake, how much longer are you going to hold it against me? And finally, Europe does get hot. Sometimes. I’ll have you know.” Zack puffed out the breath he’d been holding, cheeks reddening with each word. He looked her over, a smirk tugging at his lips, a glimmer in his eye.
“And I thought it could serve as your first engagement present too, I was going to get James a nice bottle of wine for tonight, but I ran out of money.”
She rolled her eyes, tutting loudly. “That’s it, I take it all back. From this moment on I am best friend less.” She stared pointedly at Zack, Kaitlyn giggling in the background as she stealthily swiped the chocolate bar, taking advantage of Zack's momentary lapse of concentration.
“Love you too babe! I’d better be the first person you call once James pops the question or I’ll seriously have to reconsider my answer when you ask me to be your man of honour.”
A sweet smile ghosted her lips as she flipped him the bird before flouncing out of the coffee shop. An unsettling feeling began to rise in the pit of her stomach, a bitter taste still apparent after the conversation she'd just had.
The fresh air hit her face on, hair whipping around wildly as a gust of autumnal wind swept past her. But she barely even noticed, subconsciously winding her pashmina a little tighter around herself, her nose burying into it. As her feet carried her off down the path littered with crunchy, crisp golden leaves, her mind was stuck in St. Mark's Basilica. The large round domes and marble multi coloured pillars. With her feet now rounding a corner, her mind wandered further, now walking along the Bridge of Sighs at the Doge's Palace. She paused for a second, surprising herself as a rumble of laughter escaped her mouth unexpectedly.
"It's fascinating here. And beautiful. We could get lost in Venice and roam the streets for months and I'd still never tire of this place." James talked animatedly, his pace of speech hurried as his excitement grew, all the while his thumb brushed over her knuckles soothingly, despite his apparent excitement overtaking his mouth.
The glistening water that passed them, as they both stole glances of each other. James looking at her wistfully and lingering. Nope. If he was going to propose it would have been then. In Italy. One of the most beautiful and romantic countries in the world. Or any one of the other amazing places they'd visited together. Not a random Thursday night in their apartment of all places. She shook her head, unsure why she even entertained the idea. This was Zack and Kaitlyn anyway. Why did she ever take them seriously in the first place?
A long, drawn out breath escaped as she made her way into her shared apartment with James, silently cursing the loud jangle of keys that seemed to slice through the silence. At least Zack didn't bring her another keyring back. Her set contained two keys but dozens of mismatched keyrings, mainly little momentos as a memory of the places her and James had visited. They'd taken a year off together. They were both busy and successful in their own rights, but some days it had seemed as though they were slipping into the old ships in the night routine, which so many long term relationships always seemed to suffer. James had often talked about showing her the world one day, until the words 'Why not today' tumbled out of her mouth in a rush, little to no thought actually going into the logistics of it all.
Twirling around on the spot, her eyes narrowed, skepticism pooling within her as she took note of her dimly lit surroundings. James sat hunched over their dining table, flicking his wrist a few times, a flickering flame from his matchstick disapating cleanly, her nostrils flaring slightly at the heavy smokey scent drifting towards her. The room would have been pitch black, were it not for the dozens and dozens of candles strategically dotted around the living room. Shit. He's not...?
Catching sight of her, James's demeanor changed, his eyes crinkling at the corners, mustering up a lopsided grin, neither confirming nor denying her suspicions.
"Hey." His voice was normal. Not squeaky or strained, no hint of nerves in the slightest. Her voice however betrayed her, the notes wavering shakily as she choked out a terse 'hey' of her own in response.
Something in the way she remained rooted to the spot, anxiously eyeing every candle painfully slowly must have prompted James as to the inner turmoil she was currently battling.
Striding the short distance between them, her fingers greedily snatched up the half full wine glass she found pressed between them, a trace amount dribbling out of the corner of her mouth as she struggled to knock it back cleanly in one.
He eyed her curiously, warmth jolting her to her senses as his hand covered hers, steadying, as he seamlessly removed the glass from her grasp and sat it down on a nearby coffee table. The warmth radiated through her, her whole body fighting off a chill she wasn't even aware of until now. Tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his warmth spread to her face, a rosy glow heating her cheeks as he cupped her face in his hand, watching her with an unreadable expression.
"The electricity's out."
She tried to reign in the breath she hadn't even realised she'd been holding, a short puff of air the only thing to pass her lips somehow. Idiot! There's a perfectly good explanation after all!
"That...makes sense."
A rich chuckle rumbled, James cocking his head to the side as he looked her over from top to bottom, perplexed. "Are you okay?"
She stared, deadpan for a moment, mouth slightly agape before pulling herself together. She wasn't about to let Zack and Kaitlyn ruin this night. Game night was one of her favourite nights of the week!
Nodding her head once, setting her shoulders back and fixing her face with an award winning smile she hoped wasn't too over the top, she took a step towards the 'game table'. "I'm fine Ashton. Just eager to beat your ass, as usual!"
Breaking out into a grin, he paced over to the table, both now hovering by their designated seats. "Is that so?"
"Have you been getting a little extra practice in tonight?" She jerked her head towards the Scrabble board set out in the middle of the table, a few words scattered around.
"The pressure is on me tonight."
She swallowed hard, mind going into overdrive for all of thirty seconds before James pressed on.
"If I remember correctly, you've won two weeks in a row."
Bringing a hand up to cup around her ear, her eyes twinkled mischievously. "Say it a little louder."
He chuckled distractedly, his gaze dropping to her lips. As James took a step towards her, she took one backwards, the heel of her foot knocking into contact with her chair. Her eyes widened, a brief moment of panic washing over her. Fingers curling tightly around the fabric of James's shirt reflexively, she braced herself for the fall, expecting James to come tumbling down with her. Instead, strong arms encircled her waist, gently placing her harmlessly into position on her chair.
A momentary loss of balance forced James down with her. Their foreheads coming to rest together, her chest rising and falling exaggeratedly as she caught her breath. Grateful for the strong arms wrapped protectively around her and the feather light strokes of his fingertips along one of her hip bones that followed.
Her eyes found their way to his and found them seeking out an answer to his unanswered question. A slight angle of her head was all it took, her lips latching onto his once, then twice, hoping that would be enough to reassure him that she was fine.
"Someone's eager to play." James whispered into her covered neck, before dipping lower to place a single kiss against her collar bone.
Her cheeks flushed, slowly unravelling the long pashmina she'd long since forgotten about.
"How about we play later?" Her lips tugged upwards into a coy smile, as she beckoned him closer still with a crook of her finger.
A startling crackle from one of the candles distantly in the room pulled them apart.
A small patch of skin on the back of her hand glistened under the candlelight as James left a lingering kiss there. "As tempting as that offer is..."
The formation of a sharp crease between his brows had her unintentionally mirroring him, a furrow of confusion flitting across her features at the obvious deflection. His words were at odds with his facial features, and she couldn't understand why.
Swallowing down an influx of unwelcome emotions, a breezy smile slipped into place as she turned her attention to the table, eager for a distraction. Settling back in the chair and sucking in a healthy amount of air, she welcomed the space as James eased himself off of her, and into position opposite.
Hands steepled together, her wandering eyes latched onto the opposite side of the table. A collection of tiles with a mismatch of complete and half strung together words caught her attention, the most striking being Eternity. Chin jutting, eyes narrowed, voice croaking, she managed just one word.
"Cheat!"
"This is one game I very much hope I can win tonight." His eyes sparkled in the darkness.
"Ready when you are."
Dipping his head, James alternated between an awkward squint and a cocky flit between his letters. After what felt like an eternity, he finally placed down his first word. Love.
Really? All of that build up for four letters and seven fucking points?
"Losing never looked so sexy before." She smirked teasingly.
"I just need a little more time to warm up."
A thin sheen of sweat shone off his forehead, but before she could voice any concern a sharp buzz at the door interrupted. Raising an eyebrow questioningly, James shrugged casually, using the back of his hand to swiftly swipe at his clammy forehead.
"Well I couldn't make us dinner with the electricity out, so I went ahead and ordered us some pizza. Could you go? I'm pondering over my next move and I'll probably just start spurting out random words to the delivery guy if I go."
"Don't get ahead of yourself Ashton. I think you'll find it's my turn next. We didn't up the stakes last week without my knowledge did we? Because you are acting strange all of a sudden. Unless you just can't take the humiliation of being beaten by me three weeks in a row..."
"Sounds like someone is worried about that winning streak coming to an end."
With a stern face and narrowed eyes, she outstretched two fingers in front of her, before moving them back and forth between the pair, signalling that she's watching him.
"I promise you." James smiled, raising his hand and placing it over his heart, sincerity flushing his features. "I'm not cheating, and we didn't up the stakes. This game is an important one. There's no coming back from this for me if you beat me three weeks in a row."
She nodded her head once in acceptance before bounding over to the door, eager to get back to the game.
"Good evening ma'am." A muffled voice greeted her, buried behind a stack of pizza boxes.
"Seems everyone in the building had the same idea tonight, we're rushed off our feet. Now then, which one of these is yours?"
A middle aged, kind faced man suddenly appeared as he carefully manoeuvred the tower of boxes onto the floor.
"Huh, looks like there's been a mix up. Nothing is labelled, makes my job a hell of a lot harder let me tell you kid! There's no other way to do it than opening the boxes and looking through."
A slight huff and an irritated glance back at James followed, not that he noticed. He was hunched over, scrutinising each tile whilst stroking his chin absentmindedly.
"Alright let's do this. James is awkward and orders extra toppings, so I guess his should be easy to spot."
Time seemed to stand still as the delivery guy sifted through the mountain of boxes painstakingly slowly.
"Well what do you know, the bottom two eh? What are the chances?"
She found her eyebrows raising and her foot tapping, her patience well and truly tested now.
"Okay great. Thanks so much. Have a great night!" She strained out, struggling with all her might to refrain from slamming the door in his face.
"Can you believe that James? Next time I think I'd rather just starve!"
Winding her way back to the table, she frowned at the now vacant seat, James no where to be seen. Setting down the pizza boxes in the middle of the table, she let out a long sigh. Same thing every Thursday. Wine goes straight through him! Her lips curled up into a cunning smile, as she risked a peek behind her, ensuring James wasn't about to walk in and catch her stealing a glance at his rack and tiles. With the coast clear, she loomed over the empty seat on his side, her throat constricting instantly.
There were no spare tiles, on either James's side or her own. Just the Scrabble board, positioned perfectly straight, and completed. Her legs buckled, the safety of James's chair acting as a net and catching her, her elbows coming to rest on the table as she leaned forward, eyes erratically scanning over the words in place.
Love. Eternity. Italy.
Stomach clenching as realisation set in, she allowed her eyes to drop a little further down. An unmistakablely large diamond ring sat in the centre of the board, the accompanying tiles set out directly underneath it spelt out just four more words. Will. You. Marry. Me.
"I hope Zack and Kaitlyn didn't ruin the surprise."
Mouth agape, her head slowly turned to her right, gaze falling to the floor and landing on James, knelt down on one knee looking at her earnestly.
"James what...?"
"Is it hot in here all of a sudden or is it just me?"
"That might have something to do with the hundreds of candles you've got heating up the room."
"Right, yeah. I didn't think that one through properly did I?"
Her arms folded across her chest, the penny finally dropping.
"The power isn't out?"
"Nope."
"And the pizza delivery guy?"
A sheepish look flits across his face. "He might have been paid handsomely to help me out." He paused, clearing his throat loudly. "But babe, we've sort of strayed a little here."
Her stomach twisted into knots, her heart pounding harshly. "Right err..."
"No wait. This isn't right. I've spent the best part of a year planning all of this and I've messed it all up."
"A year?" She repeated quitely.
"It would have been too obvious to do it whilst we were jetsetting around the world. We'd talked about doing that together for so many years, I didn't want to take anything away from that experience for you."
Her face softened at his words. My James. Always so thoughtful.
"I didn't think it was possible, but every day I fell more and more in love with you. I nearly caved in a few times, even went as far as to check out a jewelers whilst we were in Malta. Then you text me saying you'd woken from your nap and you were starving so I came home with food instead of a ring."
She couldn't help but giggle, cursing herself mentally. Damn you stomach!
"And then we came home and we settled back into our old routine and I thought I'd missed my chance. Then I realised, none of that even matters. I could wine you and dine you in an extravagant restaurant. Or we could stay in, surrounded by all of our firsts."
She chewed on the inside of her lip nervously, but her expression must have faltered, as she felt James stroke her hand timidly, taking a moment to find the right way to answer her confusion.
"The first time we kissed. The first time together properly, how could I ever forget? The first confession of love I'd ever muttered to anyone before. The first experience of living with a partner, my beautiful partner." His eyes softened.
"The first proposal. Hopefully the last! The first moments afterwards, when you've given me your answer..."
Diving downwards and pressing against him forcibly, they fell backwards, tumbling together into the floor. For the second time that night, James found himself instinctively curling his arms around her protectively, their lips melding together in a sudden fierce frenzy.
Panting as he pulled away, James cradled her face in his hands, thumb gently stroking either side in adoration. "Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"Good. I'm glad I could soften the fall for you."
"That yes was an answer to your original question James."
"Right right." He nodded his head slowly, taking a moment for the words to sink in properly. "Yes, as in yes yes?"
"Okay, that word is officially banned from now on!" She quipped, face widening in a broad smile.
Raising her hands to his lips and brushing a kiss to each finger individually, he kept his eyes locked on her's, the threat of happy tears brimming in his eyes as he slowly slipped the ring onto her finger.
"There's just one thing left to do now." He murmured against her mouth, tugging at her bottom lip.
"Which is?"
"Finish the game, of course. What else?"

Post # 6 - It is what it is
I'd be lying if I said I haven't spent the past half an hour with tears flowing from my eyes staring at a blank screen wondering how I'm going to get everything I've got floating in my head out. I suppose listening to Coldplay live in Argentina probably wasn't the best choice of music to set the mood. I'll work on that one in the future...
Where do I start? It's been a question I'm often asking myself at the start of these blog posts and it's certainly not the easiest one. What do you guys know? There's been so much happen since my last post on Thursday night.
Friday July 26th: I saw my doctors around lunchtime who came in quite concerned. Whilst they were confident my lymphoma was one called DLBCL (Diffuse Large B- Cell Lymphoma), some tests had come back with suspect results that it could be a more aggressive and harsh type of lymphoma called Burkitt's lymphoma and if confirmed, chemo was starting that night with no time to waste. There was also one marked in the middle (a cross of the two) called Burkitt's Like Lymphoma which is treated similarly to DLBCL. Whatever it was, I couldn't change it. I just wanted answers and if treatment needed to start, let's get it underway!
Adam, my incredible haematology doctor sent off another test of my gall bladder to finally get the confirmation I was after. It was urgent. He had to know. It was reassuring of Adam to state "Justin, we need to know what this is. Preliminary results are due back later this afternoon and that will hopefully rule out Burkitt's. if it is Burkitt's, we'll start chemo tonight and I'll be with you every step of the way - even if I have to stay back a few hours."
I know doctors earn a fair coin on a lazy day, but how many give you that much confidence that you and your health is important to them? I'm going to have it a guess and say not many but alas, I am so incredibly lucky with the team of doctors I have.
4:00pm and Adam strolls in the door heading straight for my room. My heart drops, similarly to what it had when Michael dropped the news I had lymphoma. "Good news. Preliminary results are back and we're confident it's not Burkitt's. You can't rule out anything in life, so there still is a small chance it could be. We're happy to wait for the final results on Monday, figure out a treatment plan from there and start Chemotherapy next week. Spend Saturday and Sunday on day leave and I'll see you next week."
This was news to my ears. In a time of what has been negative or no news, I could spend the weekend with family relatively freely and forget everything was happening for a few hours each day. My Uncle Bob and Aunty Denise were down from Tasmania to see me, as was my Aunty AJ and cousins from Bairnsdale so it all felt like it fit into place.
Friday night saw me considerably more relaxed with this news...that was until Collingwood started and it was the demolition it was. Slightly humorous side note, the nurse came in around 9pm for my nightly observations. Naturally, my heart rate was up a bit more than normal watching the football (118BPM - normally between 70-85BPM). This caused the nurse to call in the team of doctors who wanted to put me on an ECG machine for the night and monitor my heart. I assured them it was because Collingwood were on and if they gave me an hour, I'd be okay. It took some convincing, but it finally worked. Back they came an hour later and it had gone down - crisis averted.
Saturday afternoon and evening was wonderful. I went down to dads for dinner and was fortunate enough to spend some much needed time with family over a beautiful dinner and good laugh.
Sunday was much the same. I went home, mum did a fair chunk of washing for me as I spent it being me. Seeing Courtney, napping in my own bed and even headed over to Fountain Gate and got some much needed new clothes and other miscellaneous items - something that seems so simple but is such a luxury when you've spent the past 15 days in hospital.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monday July 29th: They say the more you think positively, the more positive news you shall receive....or it goes something like that right? I woke up this morning the most upbeat and best I'd felt in weeks. I felt fine. I felt no pain, almost like I'd woken up from a shitty hotel! In all honesty, I felt like I'm abusing the system however I keep being quickly reminded how much I need to be here. Did I wake up so positive because I lived my old life for 16 hours over the weekend? Is it because I was hoping to hear a reasonably positive outcome with this lymphoma test? Probably a mix of both if I'm honest. But whatever it was, I was hopeful.
Adam came around at roughly 10:00am. Didn't really have much for me in terms of news but more of an outline of the day. If they hear the results of the test they were waiting on, they'd write me up a treatment plan ASAP and get chemo started this afternoon. At worst, I'd be starting it tomorrow (Tuesday). They just needed that definitive answer of what type of lymphoma I have - an answer I'd love more than anybody.
Either way, we agreed i'd need a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) line in which basically is a long-term cannula. It runs from the inside of my arm right up and around and stops basically just outside my heart. This is for easy access for the chemotherapy and even an easy exit for blood tests - something that's proven incredibly difficult to take from me over the past few days. Additionally, these lines can last up to six months verses the three days you get from a cannula. There were too many positives to say no to!
This wasn't scheduled for any time in particular, so 1:00pm came around and I was about to be taken to get the PICC line in.
Just as I was about to leave, Adam came in with a few words I'm all too familiar with. "Well, the pathology tests we were waiting on have come back inconclusive..."
Woah. Wait. What? How do tests of my gall bladder that was removed six days ago come back inconclusive? How does one of the main sources not have enough 'data' to tell them what sort of lymphoma I have? I was just stunned.
Adam continued "As a result, we can see some signs of Burkitt's lymphoma and that's what we're going to treat you for. You're young. You should be able to handle it and it's better to over treat you than under treat and be stuck where we are at the moment. It's an intense 16-day chemo treatment that will totally wipe out your red and white blood cells as well as your platelets. We foresee you being in here for another 3-5 weeks, depending on how well your body goes getting these levels back up to normal post this first treatment..."
I honestly say this but that's all I remember from this conversation. I was hoping I'd be heading home this week but looks like that definitely won't be happening. Today marks day 40 of the past 55 days in hospital (day 15 of this stint) and if I go off the longest suggested time expected, I have another 35 days to go. That honestly crushed me.
I got taken down to get my PICC line in - quite an easy process. Very similar to putting in a larger cannula, just a whole lot longer and uses local anaesthetic as well as being guided by an ultrasound and X-ray. I'm lucky enough to have two ports, which will hopefully speed up some of my medication and how much they can pump in. Does it feel weird? The only weird part was feeling it slide down past and near my heart - but that's okay now!
Tumblr media
By the time I return, dad made his was in to try and help process the news. We get Adam in to once again explain the process. In layman's terms, I'll be starting an intense and high-dose 16-day chemotherapy program kicking off tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. Most of the time across the next 16 days, I'll be hooked up via IV drip getting whatever medication is required. I think I saw I have rest days on days 7 & 8 which I suppose will give me two days to look forward to. At the end of the day, it's something I'm not certain on and will be a day by day process and constant learning about what's going into my body to help fight with me.
I do have one request for you all. With my body not producing red or white blood cells or platelets over the next few weeks, I do request if you are planning to visit however are sick to stay away those extra few days. With my immune system going to be at the lowest it's been, I don't particularly want to pick up something I don't need. Additionally, as much as I'd love flowers, they're also banned due to the infection risk of the spores mixing with the chemotherapy and causing some dangerous damage from the inside.
At the end of the day, if you're not sure please message me and check as I'm not entirely sure myself about everything. I'm constantly learning as I'm going.
How am I feeling? I'm nervous. I'm nervous at the unknown. How will this affect me? How bad am I going to feel? Will I lose my hair? What will my energy levels be like? In advance, I do apologise if over the next few weeks I'm not myself. Truth be told, that's because I probably won't be.
In a way, i'm finally excited to start my treatment first thing tomorrow morning (after yet ANOTHER lumbar puncture). I was so envious of both people next to me getting their first rounds of chemo today. I know mine will be intense but I just can't wait.
I've learnt so much about cancer and chemotherapy over the past four days and I know there's so much more to learn. Today I learnt I'll be incredibly highly cytotoxic, which basically means all needles and anything used on me need to go in a separate bin just for me. Additionally, I'll have to get used to the good old double flush after the toilet to ensure all waste is disposed of. Mouth ulcers are a big issue with most chemo patients as well. I'll have to start brushing my teeth after every meal and taking a special mouthwash 3x daily to assist with keeping these under control. There's plenty of other little things, but they're two I least expected.
Tumblr media
Everything really hit me last night....not like it did tonight though. I just had twenty minutes to reflect and it just became a sudden realisation. What I'm going through is real. It's not a 'joke' anymore. It's not something they're looking at as a potential cause. It is the cause. I have a legitimate medical issue and it's finally time to fight lymphoma. All well and good to be talking the talk like I have been - it's now time to walk the walk. This sits well with me. If I give somebody my word, I do whatever I can to get it achieved. Unfortunately for the lymphoma throughout my body I've given it my word and it's time to fight it. Round one begins tomorrow morning.
I leave tonight feeling a whole lot better than I did when I started tonight's post. I didn't learn from my words earlier as Coldplay live from Argentina is still playing however I'm in a much more comfortable mind space.
My best friend of a lazy 20 years, Dylan visited tonight with his partner, Jacqui. One phrase popped up more than most and they made me aware it was a common phrase coming out of my mouth.
"It is what it is."
I can't control what's happened to me as "it is what it is." What I can control from here though is how I fight lymphoma. Thanks for the visit tonight guys, I appreciated the two hours spent here in what's been an incredibly tough afternoon.

Much love.

Fix Up That Old Fixer Upper With These Tips Going to a home that looks like it needs to be repairs can be a very frustrating and stressful experience. Don't be too upset as there are so many cost-effective ways you can improve your home. Transform your house to a home with these tips! It may be necessary for you to give a porch a fresh coat of paint. If so, make sure the paint you use is good quality. Make sure the bases of the old and new paints match. That means using oil-based paint if the existing paint is oil-based, and the same for water-based paints. Oil-based products are perfect for trim because of their longevity, but they should not be applied to decks or outdoor flooring, because it gets slippery in inclement weather. Have all the changes you intend to make mapped out before you start your project. If you want to stay withing your budget, you have to have a plan. Changing your plans or adding tasks in the middle of a project can easily increase your costs and time to completion. You will have happier contractors when you can tell them precisely what you want, also. Having the appropriate tools is important to any home improvement project. When you are using the right tools, it will be easier to get the job done properly. The key to using the right tools is having the right knowledge to use them properly. Decks that are rotting, paint that is chipping, and water damaged ceilings are items that you should look for if you're buying a home. Have a professional inspector look for structural damages, electrical problems, bad ventilation or roof defects. Put a little money in before you buy, and you won't have to worry as much about repairs later on. When you're preparing your home for sale, you want to do everything you can to clearly define the use of every room. Whether the room in question is an office or a den, its accessories and furniture should make its usage clear. This allows potential buyers to see themselves within the space, allowing them the opportunity to determine how they'd use it. When a home features clearly defined, functional areas, it is infinitely more appealing to buyers. Remember to consider landscaping when thinking about home improvement projects. The front of your home, including the yard, is the first thing that others see of your residence. Sometimes it is the only thing people see. Ensure your grass is cut and clean, and think about planting shrubbery and some other flowers to make it look great. Staining your basement floor can spruce up the looks down there. It is cheaper to stain a concrete floor than it is to replace one, and the look can be very trendy. A stained floor is also more durable and easy to clean. Choose one that will add a shiny finish. It can give the floors a nice richness and give off the appearance that they are really expensive. Once you've laid tile, you should always take the time to seal your grout. Grout isn't waterproof on its own. If it is not properly sealed, moisture might ruin the grout and cause mold or mildew to appear. If left unsealed, you will notice your grout discolors quickly from stains. By sealing grout, you will save on cleaning time, and also keep you from having to do frequent repairs and replacements due to mold. You can buy solar lights by themselves and there are tons of styles to choose from. If you truly need lighting that will highlight a walkway and illuminate your path, invest in electric models. The cost is higher, but they produce much more light. Installing a property lined fence can have many beneficial effects to your home. A fence can keep your family and pets safely away from stray animals. It can keep your dog inside as well. You can design your fence the way you want it to look. If you are planning to do some home improvement, schedule plumbing and electrical work first. These repairs usually require holes to be drilled into walls and floors, so it is best to do these repairs before others such as wallpapering or laying new flooring. Any repairs of wiring or plumbing should be done when renovations are taking place. You can add additional living space to your home to make it more functional. Think about a living room, a den or a room for your children to play in. More space will make your home nicer to live in, and will also boost its value. Wait on these larger projects until you have saved enough money for them. Be sure that contractors you hire are insured. If they damage your house without insurance, you are going to need to take them to course in order to get reparaations for that. All you have to do to find out if a contractor is insured is to simply ask to see proof of insurance. Safety should always be your number one concern. You may feel a bit silly donning a hard hat in the "safety" of your own home, however think how silly you will feel sitting in a hospital bed explaining how an errant piece of drywall put you there. Having A Hard Time Finding Home Improvement Ideas?  Look No Further!
Now you are really ready to begin. This is where making some home improvements can really bring about a huge change. There is no time like the present to get started. You may have questions about how to get started; this article will answer them for you. Here are some hints that can help you begin on improving your home.
A small room in your house does not always have to be dark. Allow light to filter in. Open the curtains and clean the windows until they gleam! A room will instantly look bigger with a little natural light. Keep your room clutter free and paint the walls with pale colors. This will lead to a more comfortable feel in your small room.
Dusting and preventing dust buildup is importnat. Dust will build up and you may have allergies that make you sick. Cleaning your accessories frequently makes you aware of any pest invasions right away, in addition to keeping the dust at bay.
The kitchen is a great place to start with home improvements. You might start off by cleaning those dingy, greasy walls. Use a trisodium phosphate mix for stubborn stains. This may remove stains but it will also strip paint. Re-paint your kitchen in a color you love; you'll be shocked how great the heart of your home looks when you've finished.
Update the look of your teen's room by making their pillows look great. Grab some clothes such as jeans that no longer fit or old band shirts; cut up your pieces to fit the desired pillows and sew the pieces together. This can add personality and lighten the mood in a young teenager's private space.
It is always best to plan ahead when working on any home improvement project. When you jump into a project with little or no planning, it often leads to a disaster as a result of indecisiveness and poor decision making. If you plan the job properly before it starts, you will find the work gets done quicker and with less problems.
Install some motion detectors in the entrance of your house. When the lights turn on only when needed, instead of staying on, your electricity bill will be lower. They are also a great tool to scare of any potential thieves, as the lights turn on as they approach the house.
The kinds of home improvement projects that involve repairing actual damage should be at the very top of your to-do list. Much of the damage that occurs to your home is the sort that you can live with and soon forget. You do not want to do this. Your home's systems are all connected together. Damage to one system can quickly spread to all of them. This may occur more rapidly than you expect.
Replacing an entire floor with wood, carpet, or tile can be a very costly project. One way to do it that is affordable is to get rid of the floor that is there and stain the concrete instead. This industrial-inspired look is both versatile and modern and can be easily altered if you decide on a different decor.
Whenever you are redesigning your room, you should make sure you select the right color scheme. A complementary color scheme works well in a formal area of your house, such as a dining room. Complementary colors appear opposite of one another on a traditional color wheel; try pairing blue and orange, red and green, or purple and yellow. This is a very effective way of separating colors and enhancing the visual appeal.
Fruits and flowers can freshen up the look of your kitchen. Kitchens look better with fresh produce. Using this technique will brighten your kitchen inexpensively. Flowers can do wonders for a room.
Enhance your home's entrance area by applying a fresh coat of paint; then put down a decorative welcome mat. The entrance reflects how welcoming your home is. Simple things, such as a new mat and lush greenery, can help your home feel more inviting.
When you put in new cabinetry in your kitchen or bathroom, it's essential that every cabinet is screwed in tight to their respective wall studs. You should mark every stud before you begin the project. A stud finder is probably the fastest, and easiest, way to locate them.
Some homeowners think they can sell their home for a higher price by putting in radiant heating or a central vacuuming system. But they forget to pay attention to the obvious fixes that any buyer might notice, like painting the shutters or re-hanging the broken closet door. Buyers will see these items and think that it's a fixer-upper. Keep in mind that first impressions can make or break a sale.
It is very common that homes that have been updated will sell more quickly and for more money than homes that are put on the market, but not updated. Your kitchen is the best place to start when it comes to increasing value. It will give you the highest return for your renovation dollar.
It is always important for you to remember that when doing any woodwork, you should never eye any measurements, angles, or any surface that should be level. Always use measuring tools when you are doing any woodwork. These tools include levels, tape measures, and speed squares.
Hire an interior designer if you can afford it. They are professionally trained to assist you and to get the most from your investment, but they can also make looks that are stylish and modern. Renovations do not need to be done on your own; enlist the help of a professional.
Employing a roofer that is trustworthy is essential. Never enter in to any legal contract with a roofing company without first doing your homework. Check for information through the Consumer Affairs Department as well as Better Business Bureau. Also, look for any reviews about the company that are posted online to find out a bit about who is going to do the work for you.

Goggles, hardhats, as well as breathing apparatuses, can prevent injury while you make home improvements. Always be flexible. You should not always work with limited time frames. Also, your home improvement project may cost more than you originally planned. There are some factors in your project you just can't control. When you finally make it to the kitchen, install some new cabinets and tie the entire house together with a bang. Mark all of the wall studs in the beginning of your installation so that you know where to put the screws. This process can be simplified with a simple and affordable stud finder from your local hardware store. Nothing beats arriving home and seeing an appealing home that suits your needs perfectly. By choosing to follow the tips from this article, you can enhance your home easily with the home improvement projects of your choice. Finish one project before moving on to another. Whenever you are redesigning your room, you should make sure you select the right color scheme. A complementary color scheme works well in a formal area of your house, such as a dining room. Some homeowners think they can sell their home for a higher price by putting in radiant heating or a central vacuuming system. Your dream home may be right around the corner.
