Ever since the AMIGO practice video dropped, it’s been going around again how killer SHINee’s live performance skills are, but what I don’t really see much of is people discussing why. Why are SHINee’s live performance skills so good? How were these five ROOKIES able to outshine their seniors in a skill they’ve been doing for so much longer?
The answer is simple: Timing. SHINee, as rookies, learned the valuable skill of timing when it comes to performing live.
Now, I know what you might be thinking: of course they’re good at timing - how else are they gonna be able to stay on track? And you’re right. It does seem like an obvious answer yet I don’t think you realize how important timing plays into singing and dancing live.
We all know that it’s hard to keep your voice steady when dancing, but what SHINee has learned is to make their voices flow with the choreography. In order to do that, it’s all about rhythm and timing. If for even a fraction of a second their timing is off, it’s going to throw off their rhythm, therefore throw off their ability to steady their voice. Same goes for timing when they need to breathe. Singing and dancing is a cardio workout. If they can’t time their inhales and exhales correctly, then they’ll be out of breath and unable to sing when their turn comes.
A lot of that has to do with the structure of the choreography. It’s been analyzed before that K-pop choreographies will be structured in two ways: either based on the rhythm of the instrumentals or the rhythm of the lyrics. SHINee’s choreographies, if you’ve ever paid close attention, often have the dance moves lining up with the rhythm of the lyrics. Sometimes all three will line up, but not often will you find their choreographies solely following the rhythm of the instrumentals. Again, that is because it’s harder to keep your voice steady when your voice isn’t following the movement of your body. It’s a balancing act, and what happens if your timing is off? You lose that balance, i.e. your voice becomes unsteady.
This is also why SHINee is always able to stay so in-sync when performing: because of their timing. It becomes a domino effect if they get their timing wrong. It’s not just about staying in-sync with one another for aesthetic purposes, it’s making sure they have the timing right so that their voices can flow with the choreography and they can breathe at the required times. Timing is the aspect that binds everything together.
So, yes, SHINee are great singers, great dancers, great at being in-sync, and have great breath control and those things combined together are what make them such great live performers. But those skills would be useless if it weren’t for their ability to time everything correctly.
I hope my analysis shed some lights on things, and if you were already aware of everything I stated above, great! I’m glad we’re on the same page. Of course, this is not meant to bash any of the hard work SHINee put in to perfecting their vocals, their dancing skills, their teamwork, any of that. It was simply an observation that I made to help everyone look deeper than the surface level of a performance.
Sometimes I think we get a little swept up in the theatricality of K-pop to realize that so much more goes into it and knowing the timing of every tiny piece is what binds it all together. SHINee has mastered the art of timing, which is what allows their talents to shine the way that they do on stage. In my opinion, it’s truly remarkable and shows their dedication to perfecting their craft.

15 mutuals, 15 questions
tagged by @flowercrowngods Thanks for thinking of me.
1. are you named after anyone?
Yes. My mother's grandmother (first name) and my father's aunt (middle name).
2. when was the last time you cried?
The last time I specifically remember was a couple of years ago when I saw Hadestown. I'm very bad at crying; when I realize I need to I have to sort of trick myself into doing it.
3. do you have kids?
Nope. And not looking to.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
Pretty much all the time in person. I try to be more careful about it online since tone can be harder to read.
5. what sports do you play/have you played?
I really don't do/have never done competitive athletics.
I do bike a lot. Twenty mile rides most weekends when the weather cooperates. Bike trainer in the apartment for daily cardio.
6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
Their presence? Actually, around my apartment building the first thing I tend to observe is if they have a dog. My building is full of dogs and it is fantastic, if allergy inducing.
7. what’s your eye colour?
Hazel
8. scary movies or happy endings?
I think most of my favorite movies have happy endings, so probably that one. I care more that the ending is earned than that it's happy, though.
9. any special talents?
I can memorize long strings of (what seem to me) nonsense syllables and repeat them as though they have meaning. The only practical use I've had for this talent/skill was in high school drama club. I played a character who spoke almost entirely in a fictional language and I got the role solely because no one else could make the babble sound like lines. If I were a good singer, I could maybe use this skill for opera, but alas, I sing like a cat being murdered.
10. where were you born?
Los Angeles, California.
11. what are your hobbies?
Reading. Yarn crafts, like knitting and crochet. More reading. Writing.
12. do you have pets?
Not at the moment. Well, a spouse. It's a bit like having a cat in that he mostly looks after himself and likes sit on my lap when I'm trying to write. But unlike a cat he doesn't give me hives or trigger an asthma attack.
13. how tall are you?
5'0" (152.4 cm, for those of you who aren't American)
14. favourite subject at school?
Math. Always math. Best math classes: linear algebra, logic and proof, statistical theory (that class was so difficult, but I use what I learned there all the time)
15. dream job?
I used to work as a library page. Just putting books on the shelf, in the correct order, for 20 hours a week. If I'm selling my time for money, that's the labor I really enjoy
tagging: You know, I'm not sure I have fifteen mutuals. So I'll just tag some people I haven't seen these from. @counting-dollars-counting-stars @greenlikethesea @threewaywithdelusion @rosethevoid @sthound @sharpbutsoft @motsimages

Yuji Itadori Exercise Program
Tumblr media
LOOK ok, the only reason people think Sukuna is hot is because of Itadori's physique.
Sukuna is muscular in his own right but do we really think that he trains? I'm maybe just a little butthurt here lol.
So Yuji is just strong ok? He probably doesn't really train much for his physical abilities, and he is one of those athletically and spatially gifted people who has strength, speed, and agility born into him. He also enhances his combat abilities by watching movies and due to his physical giftedness letting him execute whatever he sees. We can't really do that... But that doesn't mean we won't try!
Here is how his training is broken down:
Middle School:
PE/ Teen Activities: All schools have it, he went to a regular middle school so unlike BNHA PE, this'll be more normal 2-3x a week running laps, playing sports (track and field/ball sports)
Minimal weightlifting/calisthenics: Yuji didn't even want to join a club so that he could go and see his grandfather everyday. He probably went to the gym/school weight room 2x a week max. Likely with friends as he was quite a popular guy, and as a teen he might like to just keep in good shape though he was born not needing to do that. Yuji doesn't strike me as the type to max out , but he trains heavy, to make it worth his time. He probably progresses really easily and once he can complete his sets with whatever weight, he just bumps it up.
Martial arts/agility: We know he didn't go to classes for this, but somehow has these skills built into him just by observation from movies and things even prior to attending Jujutsu Tech.
We could note this as a 'beginners phase'
Jujutsu Tech Training:
Here is where Yuji was actually challenged, and he just... wasn't enough. We see him break down when he realizes he can't do enough to help people close to him, so he improves and trains.
PE/ Activities: Now it starts getting more intense, they train the students to survive, there is also sparring and formal combat training here. He works on his cursed energy with others formally and informally. Don't tell me Yuji , Megumi, and Kugisaki have never tested each other's improvements, or played casual games of pick-up basketball, or whacked each other with Maki's shinai. They probably train 4-5x a week.
Weights/Calisthenics: Yuji MIGHT pick this stuff up more just for the sake of making up for lack of cursed energy in the start with brute strength. As the story progresses he might do it less because cursed energy picks up the slack. Let's put this at 3-4x a week, he does this in the mornings.
Movie watching Martial arts: Probably covered by PE, thats where he practices what he visually learned while applying cursed energy to his new moves. He probably watched a few nightly. We'll call this 'active recovery' or 'shadowboxing' as he learns new moves in his room. The movies were for him to learn emotional regulation, and produce a flow of cursed energy no matter what, so maybe 'steady state cardio?'
Diet/Recovery: I have a treat for everyone! I made a up recipe for the meatballs he makes for him and Gojo and that Megumi makes when they all think he's dead. It's really good! The recipe is 'my own' but thoroughly inspired by many online recipes, and the official recipe shown in the anime. This is very nutritious, so lets just say Yuji eats pretty good, he also seems to like steak, so he likes his protein. He does treat himself while watching movies, you should too (based on your needs and goals)!
Chicken Meatball Nabemono:
Meatball Ingredients:
300g minced chicken
1 clove of garlic, minced
3 tbsp minced ginger
1/3 cup green onion, chopped
1 tsp oyster sauce
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp sugar
1/8th tsp baking soda (for texture reminiscent of bo vien, skip if you are not fond of that texture)
3/4 tsp pepper
3/4 tsp salt
For serving: Carrot, shiitake mushrooms, cabbage (washed and chopped) + Rice or noodles
Broth:
1.5 tsp chicken bouillon (Lee Kum Kee brand or other)
0.5 tsp dashi powder
300-400 ml hot water
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sake
2 tbsp mirin
Instructions:
In a bowl, mix the minced chicken with minced garlic, minced ginger, chopped green onion, oyster sauce, sesame oil, sugar, baking soda, pepper, and salt. Shape the mixture into small meatballs.
In a large pot or nabe (Japanese hot pot), combine the broth ingredients: chicken bouillon, dashi powder, hot water, soy sauce, sake, and mirin. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
Once the broth is simmering, carefully add the chicken meatballs, chopped carrots, shiitake mushrooms, and cabbage to the pot. Allow everything to cook until the meatballs are cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
Serve the Chicken Meatball Nabemono hot from the pot. Optionally, serve with rice or noodles on the side.
Recovery: Reversed cursed technique. We don't have that for any bumps and bruises etc... So standard procedures apply, rest, ice or warm therapy, eating well, lots of water.

Sunday: OFF/something active like hiking or just messing around in the park, household chores etc...
-------------------------WORKOUTS PART 2 ---------------------------
------------------------- JUJUTSU TECH HIGH -------------------------
Monday:
PE:
Basketball time! Or some other fun sport, come on, it's Monday. Give yourself about 30-60 of a fun active sport, the goal is to get sweaty but have so much fun you don't feel like it's working your cardio
Cursed energy control : Honestly this could be taken as the students doing some calisthenic skill work or something. Can't do a pushup? Hold the isometric down position it'll get you strong! Working on something more advanced like a front lever or planche? Hold the progressions you can do for time! This should only take about 10 minutes of your day max (isometric training ooo -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIVlncTK6oA)
Martial Arts work: Uhh, you could do a class, shadowbox a bit, completely skip this and just move to solo training, really shouldn't be more than 20 mins - 1 hour.
Solo Training: Push
Incline Press Variation (2x warm up sets -> 3x5 working sets -> 1x max effort, lower weight, with partials burnout set)
(opt. Weighted) Dips (1 x warmup set (could even be with bands), 3 sets increasing in weight, or just to failure)
Explosive push ups (think: getting airtime) (2 x to failure)
Push Press (2 x warmup sets -> 3 x 8 -> 1x burnout with lighter weight)
Lat raises (total 100, doesn't matter how many sets, pick a challenging weight that you can get 10-20 with)
Tuesday:
PE:
Racing time! Slowest one has to clean the clean the classrooms (if you work out with friends race them, and the loser has to buy pizza or dessert next outing). Do some sprint work, sorcerers need to be quick on their feet, and students are indeed a competitive bunch.
Cursed energy control: Tempo calisthenics/weights! You can do basic push and pull ups (or pull up negatives), squats very very slowly/explode on the concentric and control the eccentric. Do them until YOU are tired because cursed energy is greatly personal. Track your times/reps just aim to improve.
Wednesday: OFF/Long walk
Thursday:
PE
Steady state cardio: This is your endurance training, stair-master, cycling, a long walk. This is your cardio for an hour, you should be getting a little sweaty but still able to chat with your friends and argue about whether you want steak or sushi after this.
Cursed energy control (isometric training): How is this different from tempo? Well it's not a ton of movement, it's just holding a position see this for ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp2AMkdXM90
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkCTpBaj-AA
Solo Training: Pull
Deadlifts: (Mainly just according to feel and keeping good strength -> 5 sets broken into: 2 warmup, 3 sets ramping up in difficulty, NOT A 1rm every session, try adding a rep/set or a 5lb/2.5 kg increase per WEEK)
Rows: (2-3 x warmup sets -> 5 x 5 heavy as can be without breaking form, if your low back is too fatigued, replace with t-bar or dumbbell variation.)
Muscle Ups/Pull Ups : (2 x failure)
Lat Prayers: (4 x 10)
Curls + Face Pulls: Not terribly important (what a great thing to say lol) just go until you get a huge frikin pump with a reasonable rep range, do variations, go down the rack with drop sets, just rep like crazy (try to keep it under 25 reps per set)
Friday :
PE
Steady state cardio: Same as above
Martial Arts work: Same as above
I got tired of typing ok :P
Saturday:
Solo Training: Legs
Squats: Same as deadlifts, tumblr won't allow copy+paste
Box Jumps: (4 x 15, go higher when it feels easy )
Pistol/Shrimp Squats: 2 x to failure per leg
Leg Press: (4 x 10, reasonably heavy, focus on knees over toes)
Sprint training/ hill sprints as a finisher.
Sunday: OFF/something active like hiking or just messing around in the park, household chores etc...

Sekhi's Zombie Survival Guide for 7 Days to Die!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 1: Do the Tutorial!
It seems obvious, but its a damn good idea. When you first appear in the world of 7 Days to Die you'll start out with a few quests to get you to understand the systems. Even if you already know the gist, its best to do them anyways as doing them gives you FOUR skill points right from the word go, as well as some beginner gear.
Speaking of skill points...
Step 2: Whatcha Good At?
Are you a sharpshooter? A big burly brain-basher? A sneaky stealth-killer? A rigger who makes all sorts of crazy tools? In 7 Days to Die you have five stats that govern your abilities, and this is how they work.
Tumblr media
Perception
How good you are at being observant and noticing details. The abilities you can get from this are how to make proper explosives, use a rifle, track animals, and find more loot and other treasures.
Two skills I highly recommend from this are Lucky Looter and Salvage Operations. Lucky Looter makes you more likely to find better loot overall and Salvage Operations gives you more resources from breaking down other things (which we'll go over later.)
Tumblr media
Strength
How big, burly, and head-bashy you are! Strength is used for weapons like shotguns and clubs, and also for things like increasing how much you can carry without becoming encumbered as well as your ability to cook (gotta be able to take the heat in the kitchen!) Also heavier armor proficiency is measured via strength.
This also has the Miner 69'er and Mother Lode talents, which govern how fast you can cut down trees and mine metals and other precious materials, as well as how much you get from doing so. Very useful to all builds!
Tumblr media
Fortitude
How beefy are you? Fortitude governs unarmed weapons like knuckledusters, as well as the use of machine guns. It also manages traits like Huntsman and Living off the Land which govern how much food you get from harvesting animals and plants respectively.
The big ones for any build are the Recovery Perks though: Healing Factor, Iron Gut, and Rule 1: Cardio. Healing Factor gives you health regeneration, Iron Gut makes you get hungry and thirsty slower, and Rule 1: Cardio makes your stamina regenerate faster.
Tumblr media
Agility
Gottagofast! Agility is how fast you are, how good you can handle weapons like bows, handguns, and knives, and other things.
Light armor is governed by this stat, as are things like firing guns from the hip.
The big skill here for all builds is Parkour. It governs jumping ability, but also how far you can fall without getting injured. A fall from a height may not kill you in this game sometimes, but it can result in a broken leg! This, combined with a nearby zombie horde, will likely spell doom if you're not prepared (or very lucky.)
Tumblr media
Intellect
SCIENCE!!! Intellect governs weapons like the shock baton, which can send enemies flying with a blast of electricity, as well as automated turrets and the creation thereof.
It also manages most crafting skills such as Advanced Engineering (workbench crafting for weapons, armor, etc,) Grease Monkey (making and maintaining vehicles,) and Physician (medicines and other remedies.)
The really useful one however is Better Barter, which lets you sell for more and buy for less from Traders (which we'll get into soon.)
Tumblr media
Step 3: Home Sweet Hellhole
You can build your own bases in this game! You can... but its time consuming, takes a lot of resources, and will provide slow minimal protection.
Instead, take a lesson from the noble hermit crab and do what I did!
Find a good house in a suburban area, preferably near a city or shopping district with lots of good resources nearby.
Go inside the house and kill the everloving hell out of everything inside.
Punch a hole in the wall near the middle and put your land claim block (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!) in there, thus generating a 'zombie no spawn here' field in all directions and claiming the house as your own!
(Insert your favorite joke about the American Housing Market here.)
Whats neat too is that you can use the Land Claim Block to show where the boundaries are for the safe zone it creates, thats how I know where to set up my defensive walls around the building.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can toggle that on and off so you don't have giant neon green lines hanging around, but it can be useful for spotting your base at a distance as you get used to your new neighborhood.
Once you have it set up, just toss your bedroll on the ground in one of the rooms to mark a spawn point and get to building some defenses. Congrats, you are now surviving! Round of applause.
Tumblr media
Step 4: The Post-Apocalypse Economy!
You're not the only survivor in the world. Trader Joel and his buddies have set up shop in every city in the world and will sell you all sorts of useful goodies if you have the coin.
The literal coin that is. Dollars are basically toilet paper in this world (literally sometimes) as the US Government collapsed when Joe Biden's infection progressed too far and he tried to eat the brain of one of his aides.
Funny enough it took the Secret Service about fifteen minutes to realize something was wrong, then another five to finish arguing over who was going to shoot him.
Instead, the post apocalypse uses Dukes, a casino token, as it's currency.
Tumblr media
I recommend setting aside a spot in your base for stuff to sell to the traders. Anything you're not planning on using, mods that you have a lot of, medicines you don't want to bother with like steroids in my case, etc.
This is important as some stuff you can ONLY get from the traders! Early on you learn how to make a dew collector to gather drinkable water, but only the traders have the water filters you need to actually build the thing!
Speaking of water...
Tumblr media
Step 5: Feed me! Feeeeeeeeeeeeed me!
Food is a concern in the post apocalypse. The local grocery stores ain't getting a resupply anytime soon and McDonald's is right out. You gotta learn how to cook buddy!
Cooking skills are governed by the Strength ability Master Chef and you can learn how to make everything from basic water and grilled beef up to hot coffee and fine tea along with meat stews and other wasteland delicacies. Infact, the better you eat the more health and stamina you have, so get cooking!
Tumblr media
To cook you need some fuel (wood, paper, coal, etc) and the right tools. You slot the tools into place (see the upper right there) and it lets you craft the food if you know how. The tools are as follows:
Cooking Pot: Lets you boil murky water to make it safe, as well as making stews and other useful things.
Cooking Grill: Lets you grill meat, corn, and lots of other things. Tasty!
Measuring Cup: Lets you make things like glue from water and bones, and other useful but non-edible stuff.
Pick your foods, turn it on, and let it go and it'll grill you up a feast... but remember to turn it back off once you're done or else you're just wasting fuel... and something might notice the heat from the fire...
Tumblr media
But of course to make dinner you need ingredients! Food can be hard to come by as I said above... but you have options. You can hunt animals such as rabbits, deer, chicken, and the like for meat. Kill one and take out a knife or other cutting tool, then butcher it into cuts of meat, cooking fat, and other useful things!
As for veggies you can raid ruined restaurants and storefronts, root through the ruins of people's kitchens, and the like... or you can just grow the stuff!
To grow you need two things: seeds and a farm plot. The farm plots are tricky as you need four things to make one:
Potassium Nitrate
Rotten Meat
Clay Soil
Wood
The Clay Soil and Wood are easy, just need a shovel and axe and a bit of wooded area. Five minutes of work and you're set.
As for the others... well potassium nitrate is something you can mine if you find large white deposits of it in the ground (they look like white crystals) but there is... another way...
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Post-Apocalypse kids. Harvesting the bodies of those who didn't escape the zombie horde gets you potassium nitrate and rotten meat for fertilizing your new farm plots! Yummy!
Well, I'm sure the corn thinks they're yummy anyways.
But to make the seeds and food you need to know how to do it... and as for how that works...
Tumblr media
Step 6: Read, or the Zombies Will Eat You
Books! There's two types of books in this world.
One time use trait books that give you a big bonus in one go, but you can only benefit from once, and magazines that you can use to learn tidbits of information that unlock tiers of knowledge for making... well... everything!
The magazines are the important ones, and I'll detail a few examples here:
Home Cooking Weekly: Yep, gotta know the recipe before you can make the pie! Reading this unlocks all sorts of cooking tricks. It starts simple with grilled corn and baked potatoes, but the more you read the more you unlock all the way up to things like homemade beer and pasta!
Forge Ahead: Be a Do-it-Yourself-er! This teaches you how to make things like the all important Dew Collector for gathering drinkable water, as well as forges, workbenches, and other things for making everything you need to survive.
Handgun Magazine: Do ya feel lucky, punk? Learn all about the crafting and maintenance of handguns from this book. Early issues give you the knowledge to make better scrap metal guns out of pipes and other found materials, moving up to crafting pistols, magnum revolvers, and even SMGs!
As for the other type of books, those all unlock one of several tiers of knowledge, each specific to a specific volume. But if you manage to unlock them all you get a special bonus for doing so! These include:
Batter up!: All you ever wanted to know about the Great American Pastime (or what was that before, yanno, zombies) Baseball! While this knowledge won't help you much with winning in the big leagues, it will let you know how to swing a baseball bat or club with devastating results for whoever is on the receiving end! Stuff like "Do 10% more damage with clubs," and "craft chain mods for bats and clubs to give them better knockdown chance" and the like. If you manage to find them all, you get a perk that makes power attacks give you back your stamina if they kill a zombie!
Wasteland Treasures: A series of handwritten notes by another survivor who endured after the bombs fell and the dead rose. These include tricks like how to harvest honey from trees when you chop them down (extremely useful for reasons we'll get into below,) find precious gems and jewelry in coffins, how to weave basic plant fibers into useable cloth, and the like. At the highest tier you learn how to harvest Military Fibers, which are used to create the strongest light armor in the game!
Whats more, if you stumble across a book you've already read the traders will pay good coin for them! Don't throw them out if you can avoid it, save 'em and sell 'em!
But now that you have knowledge its time to put it to use...
Tumblr media
Step 7: I'm smelting! SMEEEEELTING!!!
Once you have some forge ahead magazines under your belt and in your noggin, you can make forges and workbenches! These are used to make, well, everything!
The forge works similar to the cooking fire, except that it has different tools. This one uses the following:
Advanced Bellows: Improves airflow in the forge to make resources smelt faster (see below.)
Anvil: You can hammer out iron and steel more efficiently! Crafting speed is faster!
Crucible: The pinnacle of blacksmithing tools. Allows the creation of advanced items such as steel bars and bulletproof glass, among others.
Tumblr media
However, its not enough to have the raw materials, you need to smelt them into useable forms! How you do this is fill up the forge with fuel, put the items you want to smelt in the smelting slots, then just turn it on and... well... fuck off for a bit.
It'll convert them over time into useable raw materials, banking them in the forge itself, until it either runs out of fuel or materials.
Once you have them you can then convert them into iron bars, nails, glass, and all sorts of useful things.
From there, the workbench comes into play:
Tumblr media
The workbench is where you make basically everything, from repair kits to weapons to armor to decorations. The works. Once you have one of these the game really opens up.
All you need is the component parts in your inventory and to tell the workbench to get working. Then in a few minutes, boom, new toys.
Tumblr media
A new feature in Alpha 21 that I really like a lot is being able to track recipes too! Select a thing you wanna make and press A on the keyboard and the game keeps a running inventory of whats left to craft it. Super useful!
But now one of the best things to use that workbench for...
Tumblr media
Step 8: Have Wrench, Will Travel
Making vehicles! 7 Days to Die has vehicles in it and they are vital to late game and extremely useful at any time. Each vehicle improves your mobility of course, but they also have the benefit of additional storage letting you make longer and longer treks out into the post-apocalyptic ruins!
There's five of them, and I'll detail them here.
Bicycles: The basic vehicle, a standard push bicycle with a little basket for storing goodies you find in ruins. A nice bonus, but going fast in it still drains your stamina and it can't hold much.
Minibike: A little scooter that uses gasoline instead of your legs to go and has more storage, but its fairly fragile and isn't that much faster. Faster than most zombies though so yay there.
Motorcycle: NOW we're hitting the road! The motorcycle is much faster and can hold quite a bit more, and whats more... once you have this vehicle or the next one you no longer need to be afraid of zombies on the roads... THE ZOMBIES NEED TO BE AFRAID OF YOU!!! Ramming into a zombie on a motorcycle at top speed will damage the bike, but it will do TREMENDOUS damage to the zombie, usually killing it outright! Still, you will want to keep some repair kits handy if you plan on making roadkill of the undead horde.
4x4 Truck: Its mah gahtdang truck Bobby! The pinnacle of land-based transport, the truck is a tank. Its a huge jeep with a ton of storage space and good armor that can travel great distances... but takes a lot of fuel to run.
Gyrocopter: Wendy I can fly! ... but not very well. I'll admit I haven't used one of these in a long time, several patch cycles ago, but when I tried it the thing flew like a drunk housefly. Can't recommend, stick with the truck.
The thing is, everything beyond the bike takes gasoline... and that's a resource you'll want a LOT of if you plan on driving much. So I'm sure you and Max Rockatansky want to know how to get their hands on as much as you can... well, there's three ways.
Tumblr media
Refine Oil Shale
This one isn't an option until very late in the game as you'll need a chemistry workbench to make it and those take a while to unlock, but inside desert biomes you'll sometimes see these rainbow-colored rocks. This is oil shale and with a modicum of work with a pickaxe or other mining tool you'll have gas for days once you refine it. Find a good mine for this and you're set for the long haul.
Early on however you have two options:
Tumblr media
Go to the Gas Station
Yeah its obvious, but its obvious because it works! Ruined gas pumps can be salvaged for gasoline, and intact ones you can just take gas from. Sometimes they'll have barrels of the stuff laying around or in storage areas too. Also keep an eye out for factories with the "Pass-n-Gas" sign, those are oil refineries. Those have LOTS.
But one other benefit to gas stations is what else is there...
Tumblr media
Salvage Wrecked Cars
The cars! Their loss is your gain! Break down the cars to harvest all sorts of useful components such as scrap metal, plastics, mechanical parts, and of course whats left in their own gas tanks! Any car can be salvaged in this way, from family sedans all the way up to construction vehicles and big rig trucks... however...
Beware Police Cruisers!
And not for the usual reasons. These things are abandoned now, but are always locked. Thing is, they have a higher chance of REALLY GOOD loot! This one pictured had two hundred 9mm bullets inside (used for protecting our freedoms I'm sure.) You can pick the lock on them to get inside, but if you don't have the lockpicks or aren't confident you can get in without running out you can just salvage the car with a wrench to break the lock open... however...
Tumblr media
Police Cruisers Have Car Alarms!!!
Whats rule number one of any zombie apocalypse kids? Thats right: NO LOUD NOISES!
Breaking into a cop cruiser without picking the lock will set off the car alarm, and this will often spawn several VERY strong zombies nearby! This mob was a bunch of nasty ones, including a cop zombie (think it was his car?) that I then had to fight off before I could loot the car and make my escape.
So yeah, you can loot cop cars, but you better be damn ready when you do... or else.
Which brings us nicely into our next item on the agenda...
Tumblr media
Step 9: OH FUCK! ZOMBIES!
The zombies! The walking dead! Those who hunger for your brains, and perhaps any other choice morsels, they're not picky eaters.
The zombies come in several varieties, and I'll detail the nastier ones below.
Feral Zombies: These zombies look like normal ones, but their eyes glow and they move faster. They also hit harder and have more health. Its hard to spot them at first since they otherwise look the same, but if you see one its best to kill it fast.
Radioactive Zombies: Its a bit chicken-and-egg as to whether the bombs dropping caused the zombie apocalypse or the zombie apocalypse was why they bombed the cities in the hopes of containing it... but even nuclear fallout just makes them stronger. These zombies are like ferals, except that they also regenerate health at an alarming rate! You can just sustain fire to outpace their regeneration or, if you have it, install the Rad Remover Mod on a weapon to give it the power to negate this ability for a short time.
Fat Zombies: These zombies are... well... fat. They're very very tanky is all. They can take a lot of punishment before dying, but otherwise are no different from normal zombies.
Biker/Lumberjack Zombies: These zombies are both tanky and VERY strong. They were big burly bastards in life and that carries over into undeath. Not only can they take more damage, they can dish it out too!
Police Zombies: Fuck the police, especially so here. These guys are like the boomer and spitter from Left 4 Dead had a nightmare baby and it went into law enforcement. They can spew a blast of highly caustic acid at their enemies, but the nasty part is when they get low on health they'll try to charge you and explode! This explosion will do tremendous damage and can be instantly fatal at low levels! It may be wiser to run away if you're just starting out.
Spider Zombies: These zombies are easily spotted by their penchant for running on all fours, the exposed bones, the heavily mutated face, and their habit of making loud squeals and clicking sounds. They're faster than other zombies, but their main threat is they can JUMP! These things can leap over barricades with ease and get into your base!
Soldier Zombies: In life these zombies served the US Armed Forces, and in undeath they're one of the deadliest you can face. They're very VERY strong, a result of military training honing their bodies no doubt, and they wear military issue body armor! They take a lot to take down!
Screamer Zombies: These ones are different. They're always female and have heavily mutated mouths and necks, huge fangs too. They don't normally show up on their own, but are attracted to 'heat.' That is to say, the heat generated by cooking fires, forges, and torches and other light sources. They'll spawn near your base once you've caused enough heat and when they spot you... they scream. Loudly. Again, rule number one of zombie apocalypse: NO LOUD NOISES! Their screams summon OTHER zombies! Kill them fast or else you'll be facing a horde!
Lastly...
Zombified Animals: Its not just humans that rose from the dead! Animals became zombies as well and they're even more dangerous sometimes! There's three main varieties that I'll list below:
Zombie Dogs: I call them "Hellhounds" and they're easy to spot as you'll always hear them growling and barking before you see them. That being said, they're fast and VERY dangerous! Their teeth can shred armor and flesh with ease and they attack quick! If you have a gun, use it! Its best they go down before they can get close!
Zombified Birds: Carrion Birds in the most literal sense, they can still fly and they can come from above so they can reach you before you see them... but they're also very fragile. One good hit from a melee weapon or a clean shot from a gun sorts them out.
Zombified Bears: Fuck just run. The zombie bears are among the deadliest enemies in the game. Unless you're well geared and really confident its best to just get the hell away as fast as you can.
... but what about when you can't?
Tumblr media
Step 10: The Zombies Got Me! ... now what?
Sometimes you just can't get away fast enough and the zombies will get you. They'll claw, they'll bite, they'll tear, and they'll do some damage! In this game there's several status effects that can do some severe harm to you, and I'll list the major ones here and how to remedy them.
Bleeding: You took a bad claw from a zombie's rotting fingernails and now you're gushing blood from the wound! You'll lose health every second and your screen will go grey as your body tries to process the pain. Any bandage will remove this status happily, so its easily remedied.
Lacerations: OH SHIT! That zombie got you DEEP! You're bleeding BAD! This status reduces your maximum health and makes it so if you get Bleeding it has an increased critical hit chance! This one isn't an easy fix though. You gotta stitch the wound shut! A sewing kit will do it, or a First Aid Kit (which has a sewing kit in it.)
Broken Arm: You took a really bad smack from a zombie and your arm is broken! Your attacks are slower and attacking with guns can actually hurt you now (that recoil is no joke!) You can use a splint or a cast to make it heal faster... but it won't heal it immediately, just faster. If you're not careful it'll re-break!
Broken Leg: Like above, but its the lower half! Perhaps a zombie got you in the leg, perhaps you took a tumble off what was once someone's rooftop, either way your leg shouldn't bend like that. Walking speed is slowed greatly and running or jumping can harm you... but a cast or splint will do the same for it as the broken arm.
Sprained Leg/Arm: They got you... but not as bad as it could be. It hurts, but you've had worse. This is the same as the Broken Arm/Leg but less severe and heals faster, however if you're not careful it can become a full on break! A sprain can't be healed by any tools you can make. All you can do is wait it out.
Concussion: BONK! You took a bad blow to the head and you're seeing stars! All your stats are lowered by one and you'll occasionally suffer bouts of dizziness where ALL speeds drop dramatically! This can be annoying in your base, but life-threatening in a fight! Painkillers will immediately remedy this however.
Dysentery: Look, I get it. Its the post-apocalypse, Wal-mart is closed forever, and you were starving... but that meat was so far past the sell by date it was starting to move. You ate something you shouldn't have and now you've got nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, the works. You become hungry and thirsty faster as your body tries to purge the foul thing you ate. Taking herbal antibiotics, drinking goldenrod tea, or drinking pure mineral water will help.
Fatigued: You're just worn right the fuck out. Good nutrition and rest are hard to find in the post-apocalypse and your body is worn down. All enemies do more damage to you because you just don't have the energy to mount a proper defense! If you manage to get some vitamins in you it'll sort it out though.
And then, the biggest one.
Infection: The Zombie Plague
You done got bit. The zombies got you and the sickness is inside your blood. Through some genetic quirk you're resistant to it, but thats all. Resistant. It won't turn you into one of them immediately, but its a nasty one regardless.
The infection is bacterial and comes in four stages. To remedy it you can use the following medicines:
Stage 1: Honey or any antibiotics. Honey is a natural antibiotic and at this stage the infection is relatively minor. Honey can be found in most kitchens, or by harvesting trees if you have the right perk.
Stage 2: Herbal or regular antibiotics. At this stage honey isn't good enough, you need medicines. Proper ones are best, but homemade will do in a pinch. You'll mostly find these in kitchens or bathrooms, or at ruined pharmacies.
Stage 3: Pharmacy Grade Antibiotics. Only the best will do at this point. If it gets any further you're doomed. These will likely be in either ruined pharmacies or abandoned hospitals.
As for the infection itself...
Stage 1: The infection is minor. You feel a bit gross but can cope otherwise. No major detrimental effects at this point. The infection will slowly get worse though, and attacks from zombies can speed it along! After an hour or if it progresses past 14% it advances to Stage 2.
Stage 2: The infection has gotten worse. You're starting to feel really sick and get tired easier. In game terms, your stamina regeneration is reduced. Lasts for three hours or until it reaches 57%, then progresses to Stage 3.
Stage 3: You're in serious danger and need medical aid immediately. The sickness has spread and is beginning to affect your brain. All stats are reduced and your stamina regeneration drops even more. You have three hours to find help, or until the infection reaches 100%. At this point the Infection reaches Stage 4.
Stage 4: Welcome to the Zombie Horde. You immediately drop dead on the spot and, presumably, will rise eventually as one of the undead.
Its important to note that treating the infection with medicines won't cure it IMMEDIATELY, it just makes the counter go the other direction. Instead of the percentage going up, it goes down. The duration is the same. Honey reduces it by 5%, Herbal Antibiotics by 10%, and Antibiotics by 25%. Once it hits that, it starts going up again, so be sure to have spare doses handy! Whats more, further attacks from zombies can re-infect you and make it start progressing once more!
But yes, thats the gist of 7 Days to Die. For a game thats been in alpha for years its surprisingly complex and a hell of a lot of fun, and I look forward to seeing what the devs pull off in the future.

LK 104: I Can Has Liberty?
(pt1)(pt2)(pt3)(pt4)
Tumblr media
Abernathy more like Abernasty amirite
Tumblr media
Just want to take a moment of time to show how many historical plantation locations in central VA there are still technically around today (though only a few still do ag,) and these are just the more public ones that are open about them being plantations. Some of them lean on being pretty locations with antebellum architecture where you can host events and gloss the fuck over the history of being fucking slavemills, instead talking about how pretty the furniture is and how wealthy and pretty the family members were. Abby Cox and Cheyney McKnight (Not Your Momma's History) have a fantastic dicussion about plantation weddings and such and you should watch it.
Tumblr media
Henri LeFevbre is the real fucking MVP here, picking up the extremely important document.
Tumblr media
I once heard Richmond, VA described as God's Blind Spot and having lived there, that's still the vibes today even with all the egregious gentrification lol.
Tumblr media
Okay so ya bitch lived in Richmond for seven years and worked in Richmond for an additional four and *still* hasn't gone to any of the historic locations that survived the Confederate Army Completely Disregarding the Proper Way to Burn Down Strategic Buildings While Retreating and Letting Most Of the City Fucking Burn Because The People Impacted Were The Enslaved Location And Fuck Them, Right?
(no, Richmond was not burned by Sherman, it was an attempt by the Confederate Army to burn down some bridges and armories before the Union Army got up in it, and it went awry because they did a bad job of it.)
Tumblr media
Moses, they are your family, too, in a way.
Tumblr media
Henri coming into frame fucking spitting facts.
Tumblr media
Did you just now notice that, Sarah??? How is Henri the most observant out of you three, I stg he's the single braincell keeping y'all on point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He really is though.
Tumblr media
Henri, do the Unequivocally Worst Part Of Assassin's Creed 3
Tumblr media
About to fucking show you up at your own job, that's what.
Tumblr media
...do you need some aloe for that burn.
Tumblr media
Yes and its a bit of a crime, in't it?
Tumblr media
He looks kinna dudebro in this not gonna lie.
Also taking a time out to mention that, being an excited nerd who REALLY got into Amrev in 4th grade, I actually memorized the entirety of Patrick Henry's speech for extra credit. The assignment was just a few lines, but I wrote the whole thing out. In cursive because it was 2002 and teachers were still insisting we needed to know how to cursive for college. I was so proud! I was so excited! I was so into it!
Anyway, the teacher got really pissed off and didn't give me the extra credit, then chided me for not following directions. And I had given her drawings I made of the Godspeed and the Susan Constant and little comics about the revolution! I was so betrayed.
Tumblr media
It is so goddamn frustrating to read about all these white folks comparing their lot to slavery while all the people who were enslaved just slowly look at the camera, Office-style. And like I know white abolitionists understood the irony but its just so hard to imagine the amount of mental gymnastics that enslavers forced themselves into to justify continuing their bullshit while going on and on about how Britain was enslaving them.
Tumblr media
Any time I hear no peace I think of the "Peace? No peace!" scene from Independence Day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Literally right behind him.
Tumblr media
Cato's got a point. God this scene would be so amazing live-action and with a decent sountrack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
God this dialogue is written actually pretty fucking good???
Tumblr media
Oh its this fucknugget again.
Tumblr media
Ok honestly? With his sneak and his parkour skills AND HIS FUCKING CARDIO this kid would be hands down the best fucking spy. The Culper ring should have hired fucking Henri Lefevbre amirite.
Tumblr media
...in the loudest way possible, doing burnouts in a conestoga.
Tumblr media
Ok but they came right up to the front door? These are some audacious kids.
To be continued

Eat move Make Food Fitness Travel Lifestyle
Tumblr media
Food is an expression of culture, creativity, and connection in addition to providing nutrition. Do you recall the last time you ate food from another country? You might say it's like traveling while sitting at your dinner table. Every dish has a tale to tell. Every taste has a history that includes customs, methods, and legends from previous generations. Consider paella as an example. This Spanish recipe has more to it than simply shrimp and rice. It depicts Valencia's agricultural landscape, its abundance along the coast, and the feeling of community that unites people. When we partake in such a dinner, we are engaging in much more than simple food consumption. Eat move make food fitness travel lifestyle Eat move make food fitness travel lifestyle. Food transcends cultural boundaries in surprising ways. A piece of New York cheesecake may whisk you away to a busy café in Manhattan, while a steamy bowl of Vietnamese pho can expose you to the streets of Hanoi.  Barriers are broken down by this common language of tastes, ingredients, and cooking skills, creating the impression of a quaint, small-world community. The next time you indulge in a delicacy from a different country, keep in mind that you are also traveling, learning, and interacting with a different culture. Making better decisions But the goal is not only to please our palates. There is a strong desire to comprehend what is on our plates in today's health-conscious culture. There are several options, from keto to vegan diets. Then, how can one get around this? By keeping in mind that food is fuel and opting for foods that leave our body feeling alive and energized. Self-education is the first step in making healthy decisions. There has never been a better moment to study nutrition because to the tremendous amount of information at our hands.  Examining trustworthy resources, such as books, movies, or expert-led webinars, may help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of different diets. Understanding the nutritional content of the foods we eat is more important than just monitoring calories or reducing carbohydrates. We can make wise choices regarding our health when we are well informed. Observing Your Body The best tip is probably to pay attention to your body. No diet can be said to be ideal for everyone, and what works well for one person may not always be the same for another. It's important to consider how certain meals make you feel.  Does dairy give you the munchies? Does one kind of grain make you feel uncomfortable? Do fruits offer you a boost in energy? Being aware of these signals enables you to create a diet that is both nutrient-rich and tailored to your particular requirements. Since our bodies often know what is best for us, listening to their nudges may lead to optimum health. More Than Exercise: Fitness Connecting the mind and body Although cardio and crunches are important, fitness goes beyond the gym. The connection between the mind and the body must be recognized and respected. Consider yoga. Stretching alone isn't it, is it? Between the breath, body, and spirit, there is a dance. Including exercise in everyday activities Fitness is a way of life. Every little amount matters, whether it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator or dancing in your kitchen while you prepare supper. Why not have fun with it? Travel as a Way of Life Traveling to expand one's horizons Have you ever heard of the saying "Travel broadens the mind"? It is real! We encounter different cultures, foods, and experiences when we travel. It's similar to reading a novel, except that you're experiencing the plot as it happens. Nice, huh? The advantages of exploration for health Travel may be therapeutic in addition to being exciting and adventurous. A welcome variation from the regular may be provided by the scenery, speed, and even the air. Ever come back from a trip feeling revitalized? That is how travel magically affects you. Creating a Cohesive Lifestyle by Combining Everything The harmony of living, eating, and moving Life is a delicate balance. Making decisions that are in line with our inner selves is important when it comes to enjoying food, being active, and satisfying our wanderlust. Ever notice how when you are in harmony with yourself, everything seems right? Keep everything sustainable Sustainability is crucial in our search for the ideal lifestyle. Every little bit counts, whether it's picking an environmentally friendly mode of transportation or buying organic food locally. After all, we want the next generations to have similar, if not superior, experiences. The Benefits of Living Holistically Stories and personal anecdotes We all have stories of how a certain meal or vacation altered our perspective. It may have been sushi in Japan or the Bali yoga retreat. These encounters mold us and serve as a beautiful reminder of the value of living a rich, connected life. The change in social viewpoints The days of distinct categories for things like "food," "fitness," and "travel" are long gone. These two things now elegantly merge to provide holistic experiences. Do you not adore how the globe is changing? Conclusion A marvelous dance exists between diet, exercise, travel, and lifestyle. We design our paths as we eat, move, and create memories. So why not make it delicious, healthy, and fabulous? FAQs How can I include travel in my exercise routine? Think about taking an active vacation like a cycling or yoga retreat. What dishes combine deliciousness with healthfulness? Indian, Japanese, and Mediterranean cuisines all strike a balance between flavor and health. Can I continue my exercise regimen while on the road? Absolutely! Choose hotels with fitness centers, go for morning runs, or do yoga in your room. How can I choose eco-friendly travel options? Use public transportation, look into eco-friendly lodging options, and buy locally wherever possible. How can you balance eating fatty meals and exercising? Modesty is important. Enjoy the indulgences, but be sure you eat a balanced diet and exercise often as well. Read the full article

What are YOUR training objectives for the upcoming year?
Tumblr media
Sure, this is the sort of click-bait title you expected to see along with a flurry of "new year new you" self-improvement e-mails the moment January 1st rolls around. Well, the joke is on you because you can begin a new year of training any time you want.
In this post I'll break down my own approach to answering the titular question.
We all have different reasons for coming to the fencing hall and a variety of ambitions that result in our sticking around. As a teacher at Gotham Swords I want to do my part in helping everyone achieve their goals.
Want to incorporate more cardio?
Get more into free-play fencing?
Sharpen your skills for an upcoming competition?
Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher(s) or me directly via e-mail or Discord [peterjhaas#7618] and let us know what you’re aiming to do this year — we’ll work together to make a plan!
Introspection
It would be unfitting of me to ask everyone to engage in this deeply personal exercise without participating in it myself...
My goals this year are:
Work towards being more concise in my teaching
Be more analytical and reflective of my personal time in the fencing hall.
Work on the "openings" I'm creating and consider more often "the etiquette of the heart".
Some of this likely comes off as a little vague, so here, without much filter is the motivation:
My earnest study of martial arts began amid a difficult period of my life. The ability to focus on training helped me bare the misery I was experiencing at the time.  During this period I trained with a mindset geared towards competition. However, the ensuing years have substantially challenged that approach. I will speak to some of the details in a later post, but for an assortment of reasons I have reached a point in which tournaments have become difficult to attend.
Yet, I still train every day.
Why? Because I believe there is something deeper and more meaningful to the art of swordplay. I will address it in greater detail in a later post, but to paraphrase one-a-many coaching books: It's an internal game as much as it is external. There is a formal etiquette and approach to what we do in our fencing hall, but there is also “the etiquette of the heart,” which is to approach swordplay with an open and frank attitude with the aim of self-improvement.
I wanted to share this, admittedly extensive quote from Hiroshi Ozawa Sensei, which I believe sums up the sentiment pretty well:
"Swordplay involves putting on your uniform and practicing with a partner. The relationship between you and your partner may be thought of as one in which each person discovers their own particular weak points through an exchange of strikes and thrusts. When you receive a strike, it should make you aware that you have a weak spot in that particular place.
Being on the receiving end of a strike, however, will inevitably make you feel disappointed and consequently practice can turn quite rough. As a result, more openings to attacks will appear, causing you even more problems and leaving you open to even more strikes. You must always take care that this does not happen. Paradoxically, successful swordplay depends on your ability to keep up a fighting spirit while continually showing appropriate respect to your partner. Your swordplay will become very unbalanced if one of these complementary elements is missing. Observance of etiquette helps you make the most of practice, and find the beauty in fencing. When you receive a strike, it is because there is an opening. You opponent draws your attention to your weak spots, and you endeavor to ensure that you do not receive a strike in the same place again. Through endless repetition and practice, the openings will gradually disappear. No one can ever rest on their laurels, however, even when they have reached the top level: because in swordplay there is always unlimited room for improvement."

When strolling on any observe, gymnasium, or subject, you at all times see several types of warm-ups previous to the beginning of the bodily exercise. Heat-ups improve blood movement to the muscle tissues concerned and lift muscle temperature, which is finished 10 to twenty minutes earlier than the principal train. For years, warm-ups have been designed in a two-part construction, together with a basic half adopted by a selected half. Nonetheless, a lot better number of warm-up routines have not too long ago been used. Many coaches and trainers have realized that a warm-up is a strong part of coaching, however designing an efficient warm-up requires combining scientific information with an understanding of the person's distinctive wants. warm-up routines Unquestionably, conventional warm-ups are removed from optimum and have to evolve. What's essential on this evolution is that a systematic and scientific method is adopted place a methodical and arranged construction is used by way of which actions may be organized to attain particular goals. Heat-ups shouldn't be seen as a static element of a coaching program. Because of this, like energy/energy and motion ability periods, development should happen over time. Superior athletes want higher motion preparation. Placing this, there are 5 foremost elements inside a motion preparation session: foam curler or therapeutic massage Low-depth generic cardio exercise Core/hip/shoulder activation dynamic warm-up neural activation 1. Foam or therapeutic massage curler As soon as used and heard about by skilled athletes, trainers, and therapists, myofascial self-release, or higher often known as "foam rolling," is now a preferred train routine for a wide range of folks, from the sedentary to the extra athletic. particular person. A foam curler is a spherical cylinder of assorted lengths, densities, and textures. At London Metropolis Physiotherapy we generally use a 15x90cm excessive density curler because it provides a wider vary of workout routines you may carry out. These are the factors that we should work on in the course of the warm-up. Calf Hamstring gluteus maximus Decrease again higher again Again Quadriceps adductors 2. Low-depth generic cardio exercise: If the climate is chilly, it's best to do 5 to 10 minutes of a sunshine cardio train resembling brisk strolling, marching, sluggish jogging, or stationary biking that permits physique and tissue temperatures to rise. 3. Core/Hip/Shoulder Activation: All motion engages the core, hip, and shoulder as vitality is generated and transferred by way of it. In the event that they lack stability and/or mobility, the result's inefficient motion and vitality leaks. the function of this half; is a brief collection of workout routines that prompts and strengthens the core, hip, and shoulder, offering nice stability earlier than transferring on to tougher actions. This stage is the combination of the shoulder, core, and hips in all three planes of movement: frontal, sagittal, and transverse. core activation Core activation together with three workout routines: PlankSdream plank, glute bridge hip activation The hips are the engine of our physique. Having full mobility and stability within the hips is essential to enhance efficiency or cut back the danger of harm. The aim is to not fatigue the system, however, to activate it. It may be achieved with the legs bent or straight, in a linear, lateral and rotational approach, relying on the calls for of the subsequent session. Hip activation that features three workout routines: push knees, facet stroll and ahead/backward stroll shoulder activation In case your sport requires throwing youngsters, you must do shoulder activation drills earlier than coaching until you're simply injured. You wish to activate all of the muscle tissues and motion patterns which might be wanted to hurry up and decelerate your arm. These basically embrace the scapula and rotator cuff muscle tissues.
By activating these muscle tissues, the physique will likely be higher ready for the upcoming actions and throws. There are a lot of workout routines you may select from. Shoulder activation contains three workout routines: inside rotation, passive exterior rotation, and 90° arm abduction exterior rotation 4. Dynamic warm-up You have to have problem mobility, stability, and motor expertise in dynamic warm-ups. ought to emphasize linear, lateral, and rotational actions, relying on the calls for of the subsequent session and the game. After doing the dynamic stretch, you can begin to hurry issues up without compromising motion's high quality. Knees to chest stroll: Aim: To develop purposefully vary of movement within the decrease again and hip flexor muscle tissues while bettering dynamic steadiness and postural management. leg cradle: Aim: To develop purposefully vary of movement within the decrease again and hip flexor muscle tissues while bettering dynamic steadiness and postural management. Strolling heel up: Aim: To develop flexibility within the hip flexors and quadriceps muscle tissues whereas bettering single-leg steadiness. Strolling heel as much as rear with ahead lean: Aim: Develops flexibility within the hip flexors and quadriceps muscle tissues while bettering single-leg steadiness. Single Leg Deadlift Stretches Aim: Develop a purposeful variety of movement, steadiness, and multi-limb coordination. The longest stretch on the earth: Aim: Develop purposeful vary of movement within the hip flexors and core rotational muscle tissues while bettering energy within the quadriceps, glutes, and core. Again Lunge Goal: Develop hip mobility in a lateral route while additionally dynamically stretching the glutes, hamstrings, and groin. Leaping: Goal: Develop a mixture of decreased physique energy and elevated variety of movement within the hip flexors and calves. excessive knee run Aim: Develop a higher variety of movement within the hip flexors, decrease again, and calves, while constructing dynamic steadiness and stability within the core and hips. Strolling with straight legs: Aim: Will increase the dynamic stretch of the hamstrings whereas activating the hip flexors. Straight leg soar: Aim: Will increase the dynamic stretch of the hamstrings whereas activating the hip flexors. Stroll backward: Aim: Enhance dynamic steadiness and vary of movement within the hips and decrease again whereas strengthening the quadriceps and hamstrings in a backward route. run backward: Aim: Develop a higher variety of movement within the hip extensors, hip flexors, and decrease again muscle tissues. This motion additionally helps steadiness the event of muscle tissues reverse to an everyday linear operating movement gait. facet shuffle: Aim: Develop energy and stability within the muscle tissues that provoke and manage lateral motion. 5. Neural activation: Neural activation workout routines are often carried out after the dynamic warm-up. Incorporating these workout routines permits us to get up our nervous system earlier than beginning to practice. To activate a muscle, a neuron should ship a sign to our mind. Neurons are nerve cells that construct our nervous system; This is the reason the mind is simply as essential because the muscle tissues relate to energy. An efficient neurological (nervous) warm-up is an extra intensive high-velocity train that goals to shortly decide up velocity and put together your nervous system. There are a lot of neural activation workout routines. When performing neural activation workout routines, the mind sends a fast sign to our extremities to generate extra power than we usually would. On this approach, we're prepared to begin coaching, working towards or taking part in, leading to improved efficiency and decreased danger of harm.

Textual Analysis - ADS 08
Kevin Durant & Dwyane Wade Gatorade Commercial
1 They used a variety of visual effects in this commercial. During the basketball game montage, they used a lot of camera flashing lights. The camera angles they used were slow and fast paced. They shot it closely at the player. They made sure that he was the center subject.
2 During the training montage, they played motivational music which made it seem very intense. In the basketball game, the sound was very isolated. They lowered the volume of the crowd so that you could hear the ball bounce and the screeching of the sneakers. For the whole commercial, not a single person talked.
3 This message was created by Gatorade. This message was made to focus on athletes. I think the message they’re trying to show is to win from within. An athlete is not affected by the words or actions of others, and they are not motivated by wins or prizes to work hard. There is nothing outside of them that gives them strength. They have learned the skill of winning from inside. They hired well-known individuals like Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant from the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder, which are well-known organizations. They showed the players using their products through a variety of shots. They did so because it makes the product more appealing to the viewer. From the beginning of the advertisement, Kevin Durant woke up from his sleep after his dunk was blocked by Dwanye Wade. And when he was able to dunk on him, Dwayne Wade was awakened from his sleep. Some would say one man’s dream is another’s nightmare. Or that the entire commercial was just Dwanye Wade’s dream. Kevin Durant awoke from his nightmare and went straight to work. He did cardio exercises, lifted weights, and ran in the morning. The majority of the advertisement was seen from Kevin Durant’s perspective. Gatorade wants the audience to learn from your failures. Get back up and try again even though you failed the first time so that you can succeed. Also, by presenting images of the player using their products, they encourage viewers to buy the products they are advertising.
4 I think they did a great job of delivering and showing the content’s “Win from Within” message. The commercial’s idea was very original. And the way they put everything together was fantastic. I think I will accept the message of this media. For me, this commercial is inspirational because it tells the viewer to not give up and to win from within. It motivated me to do things and to not be afraid to fail.
C2 Cool & Clean Commercial
1 The video is highly eye-catching. The colors are lively and energizing. It has a natural vibe thanks to the addition of leaves fluttering in the air. Plus, they captured many close-ups of the drink bottle.
2 The entire video is accompanied with ukulele guitar. The video’s narration gives the impression that the advertised item is brand-new and innovative. Close-ups of the ice tea and leaves fluttering through the air are also shown.
3 This message was created by C2. It was created to advertise their new product designs. They wanted the audience to understand that adjustments were being made and that the iced tea is natural and fresh. Between each frame, flashing lights were used to give the impression that it was lively and bright. They displayed several people drinking the beverage, leaving the viewer thirsty. Secondly, by mentioning on the packaging that the iced tea was brewed and bottled on the same day, it gives the impression that the beverage is new and fresh. Various people could view this as a marketing gimmick designed to drive up the cost of their products. Or that by changing their branding, it gives the products to a viewer the impression of being fresh and intriguing. Moreover, it encourages the observer to try the product by making it appear extremely vibrant and colorful. The use of attractive men and women leads viewers to believe that the product is suitable for them. They are also dressed in fashionable clothes. When viewers see people using a product, they feel excluded and are tempted to try it themselves.
4 The message of the advertisement, “Tea for a better life,” is easily visible to the viewers. It is claiming that drinking tea has several health advantages. Furthermore, altering the design encourages customers to try the product once again due to its improved appearance. I myself don’t drink iced tea, so I would reject this media’s message. But if they do, the message will connect with them.

Disabled Witchery
So for reference: I'm autistic, have ADHD/depression/anxiety/insomnia, and have mobility issues, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia.
My witchcraft is more recent than all of these (about 3yrs now), so I've not really adapted a practice to my limitations, but I've created my own practice which thus works around them. It's hard to know what qualifies as a 'hack' when you've never really known anything different, but I'm going to see what I come up with.
Timing is Flexible
I guess one of the things that makes the biggest difference for me is being flexible about time. Wanna do a full moon ritual but you just don't have the capacity to do so in the hour closest to its peak illumination? Anywhere within a few days is cool - I know considering 3 days as full (ie the night closest to 100% and the night either side, but some also consider 5 days (at which it's still 98%+ illumination), or even 7 (still over 95%)!
Likewise with your seasonal celebrations, it doesn't have to be on *the* date! Nature doesn't flick sudden switches between seasons, so the energy of a certain celebration or event doesn't suddenly appear and then disappear after 24 hours. There's often up to a week between the traditional and astronomical dates of the sabbats, and honestly, I'll do whatever I'm planning within up to a week either side of that. If there's a few things I want to do, they they don't all need to be done on the same day, either. You don't need to do everything at once, and you don't need to do them at the exact time/day.
You don't have to do All The Things!
I especially see the stress of this from younger and newer witches, but you really don't have to do everything. Sure, it might be nice to do an elaborate ritual every new moon, full moon, and sabbat, but that's a LOT! And that's even a lot for someone young, in good health, with lots of energy and minimal external commitments! Maybe you still want to observe all these, but all you can manage is 5min meditating near your window or lighting a candle to acknowledge these - that's rad, and totally counts!
Magic + Self Care = Win
Honestly there are so many books on how to inject magic into your self-care routine*, but witchcraft has literally been the best thing for my self-care game. Learning to connect with myself and the natural world around me has been the best thing I've ever done for my mental health. Plus it's an easy way to implement the things you're learning! I incorporate colour magic into my clothes/makeup selection, medical and magical herbalism both inform my tea selections, perfume and bath salt blends, and charm my food/drinks.
* My fave book on the topic so far is Light Magic for Dark Times by Lisa Marie Basile (she's also chronically ill).
Nature is Everywhere
I literally live in the very centre of my city - I can't drive, how much I can walk is pretty limited, and even spending much time on public transport wipes me out - but nature is still EVERYWHERE! Even excluding the herbs growing in pots on my balcony and and the pothos in my bookshelves, an urban space still has nature. Without leaving my apartment I can still see a few pigeons/crows/etc flying past occasionally, and a few paperbark trees, plus the roses and crepe myrtle in the garden of the old building across the road.
If you don't have 4 different species of street trees growing on your block or any parks/gardens nearby, what plants grow in abandoned spaces, or force their way through cracks in the concrete? What birds are around? Is anyone nearby growing plants in window boxes or balconies? Even on a terrible day, walking past the paperbark tree across the road when it's covered in flowers brings me a moment of joy.
Meditation Isn't That Hard...
... But it still kinda is. Literally the main purpose most folks are using meditation for is to train their focus. All that needs to be is picking a focal point (the breath is a common one, because it's always available) and focusing on it - your brain will absolutely wander from that, that's just when you gently nudge it back to your focal point. That's literally it! Over time, your brain will wander less often, and return back where you want it more easily. It's not supposed to be easy straight-up, otherwise there wouldn't be any benefit to it - it's a skill you practice to get better at, like any skill.
You don't need to sit any particular way - if you have pain/fatigue, you can lie down (just ideally somewhere you're not at risk of falling asleep), if you have ADHD or are otherwise hyperactive/easily bored, you can combine it with movement (stretching, walking, running, you can honestly meditate while smashing out your cardio at the gym). There's lots of ways you can adapt the basic premise, and it's totally fine to use guided meditations if you get caught up in your own mind and need external reminders to prompt you back to your focus.
ADHD Note: Meditation is literally THE most effective non-medication way to improve our focus! The down-side is that our brains are dopamine-deprived/seeking and meditation doesn't tend to give us that dopamine hit it wants, which can make the executive dysfunction a massive block to actually doing the thing. I'm pretty stuck here myself, particularly with my physical health stuff ruling out anything particularly physical/active.. I might need to see if I can find something high-dopamine to do afterwards as a bribe?
It's Okay to do Your Own Thing
Throw out any idea of what your practice "should" look like or include and just roll with what works. If you're physically disabled and struggle to leave the house, feeling like you need to do you rituals in a remote forest is probably going to mean you don't get to do many and then feel crap about yourself - craft a ritual you can do sitting in bed! If you're asthmatic, perhaps using candles, sprays, or bells would work better to cleanse your space than burning incense or herbs. If you have poor fine motor control or impaired vision, maybe you find it easier to record your journey digitally! Doing something "differently" and being able to do it is far better than doing something "properly" and just.. literally never being able to do it.
You're Not Alone
There are honestly SO many disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent, and mentally ill witches out there. We're really often drawn to witchcraft, and there are some folks putting out some great resources on how they adapt their practice - like @heatherwitch's "Bedridden Witchcraft" series. Quite a few popular witchy authors are chronically ill as well, like Lisa Marie Basile, Juliet Diaz, and Arin Murphy-Hiscock. Don't let anyone tell you that your can't practice witchcraft unless you're physically and mentally well, it's bullshit, and we're all living proof.

reid’s anatomy
Tumblr media
summary: spencer gets a gunshot wound while working in the field and gets transported to the hospital you work in as a 4th year resident.
word count: 2,325                                                                                             reading time aprox: 9 mins
masterlist
Gurneys, lights, flying commands, and patients. The trauma room was my favorite place to be, other than the OR of course, it felt like a second home. But nothing compared to the home I had when I laid in Spencer’s arms.
I was currently working in the trauma room, triaging the patients as I did my rounds. I dismissed a few individuals that had minor injuries, while discovering various accidents that required solutions as small as stitching up a patient to booking an OR for an emergent surgery.
“Honey can you move your toes for me please?”
In front of me lay my latest patient, a 5 year old boy who had been pushed off of a swing set and had happened to land on his ankle. His cheeks were painted red from the crying he had previously done, a thumb cemented into his mouth as he continued to suck on it for comfort. His mother sat beside him, panic evident in her eyes, although she kept an amiable expression to reassure her son on his well being.
The boy shook his head frantically, earning a break in composure from the mother. She reached out and folded her hand over her son’s and held on tight to it, with a tight-lipped smile on her face.
“You’re going to be okay Timothee, mommy’s right here sweetie”. The mother squeezed her son’s hands continuously, looking to me for answers.
“Your son- well Timothee here seems to have sprained his ankle” I explained in layman's terms, lifting up the boys ankle to locate where the injury occurred.  “The issue here is that he seems to have an eversion ankle sprain and has fractured his deltoid ligament, which is more uncommon than a inversion ankle sprain, since the deltoid ligament is close to impossible to fracture”.
As I finished my description, the mother returned her attention to her son, massaging his head to console him. “We-well it’s just a sprained ankle right? It can heal. My husband has had multiple sprained ankles from how much of a klutz he is” She joked in attempt to lighten the mood. Despite her attempts, there was more news to deliver.
“I wish it was much more simpler than that” I sighed, motioning for the on-call nurse to come over. “Due to Timothee’s young age, my biggest concerns are the development of his bones, considering the fracture he had suffered and that the nerves responsible for motor skills in his legs might have been severed. In most adult cases, the individual is able to recover because the durability of the bone had been fully realized from age. But, Timothee here is at risk of deformation of his osseous matter” I doefully confessed, a small pit forming in my stomach while delivering his diagnosis.
As the mother’s face dropped, I turned to the nurse telling her to call Neuro and Peds, then asked her to file the paperwork. I looked back at the small family with a sigh, placing his chart at the end of the bed.
It was moments like these that make me envision the life I’m going to have with Spencer if we ever decided to have children together. Despite our young age, I couldn’t help up configure an idealistic future than only composed of me, Spencer, and 2 or 3 little children running around us in glee.
“The nurse will be back with the pape-”
I was cut off by sirens and a magnitude of shrilling voices shouting commands. These were the indications of an incoming trauma. I turned around to peak for a second with the possibility of wanting to check on another case, but the interns and 2nd year residents had beat me to it.
My focus remained on the child in front of me, checking his vitals from time to time, while eavesdropping on the commotion behind me.
“We’ve got a caucasian ma...federal...with a GSW in the thoracic cavity, with intercostal tears”. Most of the sentence was muffled by the loud wheels of the crash cart, residents fumbling around, and the attendings yelling orders at the scene. I turned around to witness the chaotic scene, only to be meet with heads full of hair and some that didn’t actually have hair at all.
Geez, I wouldn’t want to be the guy with the GSW to his chest
In emergent surgery, GSW’s were the most lethal in the clinic as most of the time the patient is either too late or the bullet had caused multiple complications in the patient, causing distress in the body. The tricky thing about GSWs were that they were different every time, it was almost always a different procedure depending on the location.
I nodded goodbye to the perturbed mother, earning a tight lipped smile and a nod back. I turned to walk towards the nurses station when suddenly I was paged to trauma room 3. I rushed over to the area, sanitizing my hands before walking in. A privacy drape hung from the lower abdomen of the individual, with nurses and residents scrambling to keep his vitals stabilized.
I faced the trauma nurse as she explained the patients situation. “We’ve got a caucasian male, seems to be 25-35 with a GSW in his thoracic cavity with no exit wound, the bullet is possibly lodged in the pericardial cavity” She spoke in haste.
“Push 10 of Norepinephrine and call Cardio” I stressed, rushing out of the room to find another resident to scrub into the surgery as I wasn’t finished with my rounds yet.
On my way around the nurse’s desk I noticed a familiar face that sat glum and slumped over in his chair, well it was more like a familiar group of faces. My steps slowed in order to get a better view to confirm my suspicions, then shuffled over to determine what the occasion was.
“Hey Morgan-hey guys” I furrowed my eyebrows at the group, my worry peaked at the numerous melancholy expression that they wore on their faces. Despite my observations, there was one face I noticed was missing from the ensemble.
Spencer.
A chill ran up my arm, which was usually an indication of something wrong. In spite of the unfavorable pit in my stomach, I was at my workplace where everything usually puts me on edge, so I pushed it aside.
“Where’s Spenc-”
My words faded out into an uncomfortable silence when Morgan lifted his head to face me and in his eyes were the deepest of browns, anguish pooled in his irises, similar to the look I gave to the mother of the patient I was treating previously. I glanced at the rest of the team, who wore a identical stares.
My stomach had churned and twisted into knots. The chill that had ran up my arm traveled to my legs, all the way to the tips of my toes. Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion, I could feel my heart still and my fingers twitch. The overhead lights of the clinic became overwhelmingly bright and a nauseating sensation began crawling up my throat.
“Y/N-” Morgan began as I stared at him wide-eyed. He grabbed one of my hands and wrapped it in between his rough and sweaty palms, but I tensed in the midst of it, while adrenaline ran up my veins.
“Reid, he’s...we-we were workin- I...he’s”
Despite his attempts at an explanation, he wasn’t able to complete any of his phrases as I yanked my hand out of his grasp and bolted towards the trauma room. I heard my name being called in the background, although it became a voice of a phantom as my surroundings became impaired with the sounds of my heartbeat, the loud thuds my feet made as I raced towards the room, and the anxious thoughts that flooded my mind.
I pushed into the room, only to see a bed was missing. I bee lined to where the residents were, pivoting around the various carts that decorated the room. “Where’s that patient with the GSW in his thoracic cavity? What resident was assigned on his case? What was his name?”. The words spewed out of my lips like a waterfall, earning alarmed looks from the residents.
“Um, he was transported to OR 3″ One of them explained with naive looks on their faces.
“Yeah, they’re in surgery right now with Dr. Burke and Dr. Montgomery” Another one added.
“What’s the patient’s name? Do you remember?” I responded, prying them of all the information they knew. The residents peered at each other dumbfoundedly, looking at each other for answers as if they were taking their MLE exams again.
“Dr. Y/L/N, no offense but you’re not on this case” One of the residents added with a condescending voice.
“Dr. Mallory, if you don’t answer me in the matter of 10 seconds, I swear I will go to your senior resident and have you be doing scut for the rest of your medical career” I retorted. Fear was evident in all their eyes, I knew my eyes were brimming with multiple emotions, condensing into nothing but a fiery and aggressive tone.
“Sp-spencer Reid, Ma’am” A quiet voice spoke up in the group. I nodded a small thank you to the individual and ran to the OR where they held Spencer.
When I got into the prep room, I grabbed a face mask and entered the OR, witnessing a man’s body, the love of my life under heavy anesthesia and tubes wired up to his chest. Before I could speak, the attending spoke up and questioned me of my presence.
“I-i was wondering if I could scrub in sir” I replied. “I-I, um, heard that there was in upc...incoming trauma for a GSW and I was wondering if I could scrub in” I repeated.
“You already said that Dr. Y/L/N”
“I understand sir, but I-”
The attending than turned around exposing the sight of Spencer’s chest being retracted open. My entire body ached at the sight, the lifelessness of his body creating an image in my head that couldn’t compare to the images Spencer would see of his victims. I cringed and turned away, tears threatening to spill from my eyes, but I knew I couldn’t let myself go, especially if I wanted to be included in Spencer’s operation.
“Dr. Y/L/N, with all respect, I know you’re one of the best residents we have in this hospital and I know you’re a phenomenal doctor” The attending explained, letting one of the other senior residents take over for a moment. “But, I also know who this is laying on my table. For this case, you’re not his doctor, you’re family, and I need you to trust that I am able to do my job, as you do yours” He concluded, signaling to one of the nurses to take me out of the OR.
I nodded hesitantly, following the nurse out of the room, my eyes still locked on the individual that lay on the table. After the nurse had went back inside, I sat on the ground with my hands on my lap, staring at the abyss of the hallway.
Our future depends on if a single man can maneuver his scalpel with enough wisdom and efficiency. The father of my future children lay on the cold metal table, where I used to find comfort and power in when saving someone else’s loved one. Who knew there would be a time where the roles were switched.
Who knew that no matter how many years you’ve trained, how many books you’ve read, and the degrees you’ve obtained to save people’s lives, you could still be powerless against what life throws at you. The worst part is the irony that comes with tragedies. I spent a quarter of my life learning how to save people, yet I sit here purposeless when someone that I live for is struggling to stay alive. How malicious is that.
Tears began streaming down my cheeks, although my expression hasn’t changed. The wetness that enveloped half of my face was the only thing that reminded me of the reality that I was in, keeping my consciousness grounded momentarily.
I swear my heart pauses, everytime I hear a change in the monitor that indicated Spencer’s vitals or a command that the attending would spew out to the helping resident. I was completely fixated on everything that was happening in the room adjacent to me, disregarding the entire atmosphere that lay in my vision.
It wasn’t until large legs halted in front of where I was crouched down. I didn’t bother looking up as my thoughts clouded my sensibility. The figure then sat down to my level, I could feel the individual’s eyes boring at my blank visage. I felt a large arm pull me closer to the individual, only this time I realized it was Morgan who had come to console me.
Awaiting a pursuance of some sort of speech that’s supposed to bring me clarity or amenity. But to my dismay, only the loud presence of silence filled the gap of our exchange. That’s when my emotions began to seep into my skin, filling my heart with heavy matter, making it close to impossible to keep up my facade.
A whimper escaped my lips while I laid on Morgan’s shoulder for the time being, only for the rest of my somber to follow. I cried in defeat, holding onto the clutches of Morgan’s shirt as he gripped onto the back of my head, massaging it in the process.
I felt droplets hit the top of my head and a wetness forming rapidly. Weak sniffles emitted from the man above me, betraying his collected composure. We both sat here together with heavy hearts, waiting for what seemed like an eternity.
We both sat in silence waiting to see if his colleague was alive and if my everything was still breathing.

Observation Skills - Part Two Lindsey Horan x Reader
Lindsey is really starting to like her new gym.
Tumblr media
Lindsey was anxious the entire drive to the gym the next morning. She was eager to see the other blonde, but also incredibly nervous at the prospect of speaking with her like her and Sonnett had talked about the day before.
Once she arrived at the gym, she sat in the car for a couple minutes to settler herself. Talking a deep breath, she walked in to see Sara setting up weight on one of the squats racks, headphones in, head bobbing to the song playing. Lindsey paused and watched for a second, Sara lifted her head, making eye contact. The midfielder blushed at being caught, giving the blonde trainer a shy smile and wave. To which Sara returned before going back to her own workout.
‘Hey Linds, ready?” Sean asked as he approached her.
“You bet,” the blonde replied as the two made their way to the turf to begin warming up.
Lindsey glanced toward the other blonde, again just as Sara lifted her head, making eye contact. Anxious at being caught looking, Lindsey quickly looked away.
The workout seemed to drag on that morning. Somehow Lindsey felt both completely focused and utterly distracted; focused because she wanted to impressed Sara, but so distracted by the physical strength she displayed. Every time Lindsey glanced towards the blonde, she was mesmerized by the strain of her shirt as her muscled flexed against it.
“You remember I’m gone the rest of this week, right?” Sean asked, bringing Lindsey out of her focus on Sara. “I talked to Sara, she’s here, said she’s left her mornings clear and is cool to train you if you want.”
“Oh yea, I totally forgot. I am good with whatever,” Lindsey replied, panicking at the thought of training with the woman she had a newfound interest in. The opportunity to spend time with her excited Lindsey, but the thought of potentially exploring these unexpected feelings.
“Sounds good, let me know and I’ll give Sara a heads up. Great work today, good luck with blondie If you decide to train with her,” Sean winked as they walked to the front of the gym, “Sara is great to train with, seriously, you guys will get along great.”
“Yea, she seems pretty cool, I’ll think about it,” Lindsey replied, scanning the gym for one last glance of the other blonde.
With a wave, Lindsey walked out the gym, immediately pulling her phone out to phone Emily.
“What’s up lady killer?” Emily picked up on the first ring.
“I immediately regret calling you,” Lindsey replied with an eye roll, but instantly feeling her anxiety lessen.
“Don’t leave me hanging Linessi! How did it go? Did you talk to her? Get her number?” Sonnett started rattling off questions.
“Slow down Disanni! I don’t know how it went, good I think, I might train with her the rest of the week. I didn’t talk to her, but I smiled and waved, that must count for something. I’m still too nervous to do more than wave at her, so no, I definitely didn’t get her number,” Lindsey replied, rolling her eyes at herself.
She was an adult, she wasn’t in high school, she did not have crushes. Right?
“How do you not know if you’re training with her? This is perfect! You will have an entire hour of her full attention! An hour of potential flirting!” Emily exclaimed, exasperated.
Emily had a point. Lindsey would finally have the chance to do more than just smile and wave from across the gym. Maybe she would finally be able to figure out what this sudden infatuation with Sara was.
“I hate to say it Sonny, but you have a point,” Lindsey replied with a sigh.
“Of course I am right Linds! I would never lead you astray!” Sonnett commented with mirth in her tone, “seriously though, I would never encourage you to anything that could hurt you. There is no harm in just training with her for a couple days. Worst that happens you guys don’t get along and never train together again. Best case scenario, you hit it off and we start bridesmaid dress shopping,” the exuberant blonde finished in a caring tone.
Lindsey pulled into her spot at her condo, shifted her car into park, and leaned her head against the steering wheel with a groan, “why is this so hard?”
“This isn’t hard Lindsey,” Emily chastised, Lindsey could hear the eye roll through the phone, “You are going to stop over thinking this. You are going to train with her like you have with several other trainers. You are going to talk to her like you have hundreds of other people. Stop being a dramatic high school cliché.”
Lindsey stayed quiet for a second to consider what Sonnett said. She was being dramatic; she had met this woman officially two days ago. There was no reason to be this worked up.
“I hate it when you’re right.”
“You love me. Now, get the fuck out of your head, tell them you’ll train with her tomorrow. This chick would be crazy not to be interested in you Linds. I’m just getting to my training but let me know how it goes tomorrow or if you need more stellar Emily Sonnett advice.”
“Thanks Sonny, I appreciate the pep talk. I’ll talk to you later.”
Lindsey made her way out of the car and into her condo, texting Sean she would be interested in training with blonde trainer if the option was still available.
Sean immediately replied confirming it was and that he would let Sara know, quickly followed up a second message including the contact information of said blonde trainer and the caption “in case you need it”. Shooting Lindseys anxiety right back up.  What the fuck was she supposed to do with that?
Sending a quick thanks to back to Sean, Lindsey flopped on the couch with a groan. So much for not overthinking.
Much Like the morning before, Lindsey drove to the gym jittery with anxiety. She had no idea what to expect from working out with the blonde trainer.
She took a deep breath before making her way into the gym, quickly spotting Sara laying on the turf stretching, a large white and brown spread out next her.
Lindsey slowly made her way towards her, willing herself to not trip or make a fool of herself before the workout even began. The dog shifting to standing up as she got closer, Sara stood with the dog, rubbing her hand along its side.
“Morning Lindsey!” Sara began, far too awake for how early it was, “so, Sean gave me your program, looks good, we have some lighter lifts today and then some cardio. We’ll get started with the warmup; you can do whatever you want. I’m going to put this guy in my office, and I’ll be right back.”
Lindsey stopped her before she gets anywhere with the large dog, thankful for a possible buffer. But also cursing the universe for somehow making this gorgeous blonde, somehow more attractive.
“I love dogs! He’s more than welcome to stay out here with us if you want.”
“You sure?” Sara confirmed, “he super chill and will just follow us around anyway.”
“Absolutely!” Lindsey said, as she bent down to greet the dog, raising her hand for him to smell.
“Alright, if you’re sure,” Sara confirmed one more time, at getting a nod from Lindsey, “well in that case, Lindsey meet Blaze, Blaze meet Lindsey.”
At that, the large husky sat back down and gently raised his paw to shake.
“Such a gentleman!”
Lindsey chuckled, surprised, but took the offered paw. Giving it two shakes before putting it down and petting the dogs head. Why was she not surprised the the dog shook upon meeting new people? Somehow, that just felt like it matched the blonde.
“Of course! I didn’t raise an unruly little whippersnapper,” Sara said with a giggle, rubbing the dogs sides, “right bub, you’re a good boy.”
“Unruly little whippersnapper? Are you 100?” Lindsey joked with a grin, watching the blonde play with the dog, “and there is nothing little about Blaze.”
“You mock, but you forget who is deciding what we do today,” Sara joked back, pointing at Lindsey.
And with that, the midfielder felt completely at ease around the trainer.
That was how the whole workout went, easy banter and conversation flowing effortlessly. Sara offering advice and assisting Lindsey through the session, always confirming it was alright to touch her beforehand. The large husky always trailing behind, close, but never in the way.
Before Lindsey knew it, they were done and back on the turf stretching, conversation still going, both women with smiles on their faces.
“Great work today Lindsey. I’ve got to go put Blaze in my office before my next client, but I’ll see you tomorrow?” Sara trailed off with the question, seeming unsure.
“Absolutely!” Lindsey reassured, “Sean gave me your number, so I’ll let you know if anything changes.”
“Sounds good, don’t be afraid to use that number anyway,” the blonde said with a smirk and a wink, beginning to walk away, Blaze following.
Lindsey immediately pulled her phone out while she finished stretching and texting Emily.
Linessi: It’s official, I am 13 again with a stupid crush
Disanni: So it went well?!
           Tell me everything!
Linessi: Ugh so well! It was great!!
Lindsey’s phone immediately began to ring, which she quickly ignored in order to talk to Emily in the safety of her car.
Rushing out of the gym, Lindsey gave the other blonde one last smile and wave, feeling much less awkward about it than the say before.

E-Sports
Occasionally, you can read about a game adding or already having “e-sports features“ like tournaments or spectator mode, or about trying to “bootstrap an e-sports scene“ by hosting a tournament with a five- or low-six-figure dollar amount prize pool.
This is not how it works. You can’t turn any game into an e-sport by paying people to play it, or by adding features that enable players to run their own tournaments. E-sports are computer games as competitive spectator sports.
For this to work, you need:
Full-time competitive players
A large audience of passive viewers
A media industry/tournament circuit with sponsors, commentators, broadcasting channels, hosting and monetising professional matches
You cannot have #3 without the first two. You cannot have full-time professional players without #2 and #3. It all feeds into the other pieces.
Maybe, if you cannot afford to have a tournament circuit and full-time pro gamers, you can instead have something similar on a smaller scale:
A high-level hobbyist competitive scene
A small, but committed crowd of enthusiasts keeping the game alive
Enough interest for the enthusiasts to fund an annual tournament
The small-scale model seems to be how speed running and the fighting game community operate. The large-scale model is how StarCraft used to work, and how League of Legends, CS:GO and Overwatch work today.
Professional Competitive High-Level Play
E-sports depends on world-class players who can make a living playing your game at a world-class level. They are called “professional gamers”. They train for the game as their day job, probably with some cardio, gymnastics, and hand-eye coordination exercise mixed in. They have sponsors and trainers, which I will cover more in depth in point #3. For there to even be world-class players, the game has to reward high skill.
A competitive scene needs a a balanced, but competitive game. A competitive game with has skill measurement and a high skill ceiling.
E-sports pro gamers are playing the same game as regular players, but they are very good at it, so good that they dominate matches against average players, and even matches against good players. That’s what makes them world-class. If you could spectate just any game on the ladder, the e-sports scene would nor be special. If the outcomes of a match are heavily influenced by randomness, there can’t be a big difference between world-class players and people who just picked up the game. If the game provides high skill measurement at low levels, but runs into ceiling effects at high levels, for example if pro players frequently play a perfect game of computer golf, or a perfect game of computer bowling, there is no skill measurement at high levels, and high-level matches become boring.
An e-sports scene can only exist when the game is balanced for high-level play and has a long skill chain. I the game is discovered to have boring solutions, it must be patched.
How can you determine who is a “world-class“ player after the game launches? How can you be sure the pro-gamers are really world-class if they only play against other pro gamers? How do players ascend from competitive hobbyist to pro? An e-sports game needs a lively hobbyist competitive scene. Good matchmaking and a public ladder allow professional players to practice against random high-level players, hobbyist players to measure their skill against pro players, and everybody everywhere to know where the metagame is at. After all, what good is skill measurement if you never measure yourself?
An e-sports game needs a ranked ladder and good matchmaking.
The pro gamers will probably spend a significant amount of time each week training, sparring against team mates, practising specific moves, techniques, or strategies. This requires custom matches (ranked ladder matches are still good for raising team brand recognition on twitch though, in addition to getting a feel for the metagame). I heard that during the heyday of StarCraft II, some teams spent hours practising defence against cheese like 6-pool Zerg rush, a bunker rush, or a Zealot/Stalker all-in.
Of course, if you practice defence against bunker rushes for days only for bunkers to be nerfed on the day of a tournament, it’s all moot.
There must be a way for competitive players to practice in custom games against colleagues. Patches affecting balance or tournament play must be small and announced well in advance.
The Passive Watching Experience
The audience cares about the game, knows what’s going on and who is winning, and loosely follows the metagame and the goings-on in the e-sports scene, but not necessarily all the beef and player transfers.
The simplest, but not easiest, way to a large audience for an e-sport is to have a large player base. People who occasionally play the game at a hobbyist level are already familiar with the mechanics, and a little emotionally invested in the outcome of games. Even in some real-life spectator sports (like football), you expect almost all people in your audience to have played the game at some point in the past.
A large hobbyist player base also feeds into the smaller pool of more competitive players, and thus ultimately into the pro gamer scene.
All this is presupposing that the e-sport still resembles the game as most players know it. If the high-level matches look completely different from hobbyist ones, if different skills are important, and if it is difficult to know for a hobbyist player what is going on and who is winning, it is much more difficult to parley a hobbyist player base into an e-sports audience. In some Nintendo party games, like Mario Kart and Smash Bros, (but not Mario Party, which is only casual and does not have a competitive scene) most players are playing only very casually against friends, and in others, most players are only playing in single-player mode. They don’t care about winning or getting good at the game, so they are less likely to care about e-sports.
For a large player base, the game has to be easy to pick up, easy to understand, and still fun and competitive at the entry level. Being easy to pick up and understand also makes e-sports games easier to watch and understand passively.
Having multiple games modes can be a nice compromise, allowing casual players to play in a low-skill game mode while competitive players have a higher skill ceiling. This works best if the cards, units, weapons, or whatever your game has, and all mechanics and physics still follow the same rules, and only a few elements are swapped out. Playing with the same rules but different starting configuration and goal state is better than playing “easy mode” with a completely different balance. Casual observers can follow and appreciate e-sports matches if they know what’s going on. By changing the win condition, starting state, and introducing a couple of new mechanics, new game modes can mostly maintain the game mechanics while shifting the dynamics of a match. Keeping the dynamics but making the moment-to-moment gameplay less predictable for the casual observer is much more confusing.
For the viewers who are not playing the game at all, e-sports broadcasters must explain what’s going on, who is winning, and what the current metagame is.
In some games, the metagame is more important than in others. Card games like Hearthstone are difficult to understand for viewers who are not up-to-date on the metagame, even though the mechanics are easily explained, and the card-specific rules are written on the cards. Without knowledge about the current metagame (which decks are dominating the ladder, whether aggro, control, or combo decks rule, what kinds of tech cards/adjustments players can add to react to small shifts in the metagame) it is nearly impossible to make sense of what is happening. That is true even when the viewers see all the cards and know both decks in advance. Specifically, it is difficult to understand why a player is playing fast or slow, greedy or safe, defensive or aggressive, and also who is winning. The same goes for Magic - The Gathering. It’s nigh impossible to understand how a matchup between two decks works without knowing what other cards could be in there, but aren’t. This can ruin the experience for people who know the rules but play the game only very casually.
Other games may have clearer indicators of who is winning and what is going on, but even fighting games with health bars, RTS games with supply counters, and MOBA games with lanes whose battle lines you can see on the minimap won’t let you tell who is winning based on one factor alone. Such a game would be boring! In every competitive game, there should be a way to sacrifice hit points for better positioning (e.g. in Smash Bros or Virtua Fighter), or to fall back on a lane in exchange for gold, so there is never a “simple” metric to see who is winning. If there were such a metric, the first player who gains a small advantage by that metric would just snowball out of control and dominate the match.
In any case, passive spectators benefit from additional visual feedback, because while the players know which buttons were pressed, the audience does not. Passive watchers have much less information than active players. In the first-person view, it can be enough to just indicate whether something failed or succeeded, hit or missed. A fighting game player knows which button he pressed, and his opponent knows whether he blocked correctly or not. Nonetheless, the game should also communicate visually which type of action the players chose for the benefit of the audience.
Visual spectacle and clear legibility are sometimes at odds with each other, but visual spectacle can make watching a game more “fun“.
Having too clear an indication of who is winning can be a detriment, too. It’s good to have clear visual feedback, but not to have limited gameplay options. If the future trajectory of a match is set in stone as soon as one player establishes a clear lead, the game is no longer fun to watch from that point onwards. In games with perfect information, or with enough information, the losing player might simply resign instead of drawing out the match to its bitter conclusion, but in some games with fog of war, one player might be oblivious of his disadvantage, or he might go on and on looking for “outs“ while the audience already knows how everything will eventually play out.
This is just one way in which games can be boring to watch at higher levels of skill, even if the audience understands what is going on. There needs to be a certain flow of action, to keep viewers engaged and entertained. The game should get going without a long set-up phase, and should wind down without a drawn-out endgame. To keep viewers involved at all times, decisions throughout every phase of the match should influence the outcome.
Comebacks, reversals, pivoting to different strategies, risky plays with big pay-offs are all ways to introduce drama into the watching experience.
Fighting games are harder to read for the audience moment-to-moment, the matches are shorter, they can end abruptly, and they are difficult to get into. All this means they don’t make for as fun a watching experience compared to MOBAs, RTS games, or objective-based modes in first-person shooters.
Digression: Let’s Play and Variety Streaming
E-sports is not the only way to broadcast games for entertainment. Your YouTubers and variety streamers can make a living on games, but they don’t have to be world-class. People don’t watch them because they are good at the game, or sometimes not at all because of the game, but because of the streamer’s personality, the community, and the funny commentary. Playing the right game is a way for small twitch streamers to gain new viewers, but it’s not what keeps people around. Some streamers mainly stream the same single-player game every time, and are so good at it they have a streak of hundreds of games in hard mode. Even they retain their viewers because of their personality, not because they are the best at the game.
Of course, a variety streamer or Youtuber can also play competitive games like Chess, PUBG, or Rainbow Six: Siege. It’s played a different format though: Viewers see what the streamer sees, and a face-cam, and if the streamer is eliminated from a round of PUBG or Fall Guys, the streamer often does not spectate the rest of the round for the viewers find out who wins.
YouTubers of average gaming skill can even play tournaments of casual but competitive (in the sense that you play against each other) games against other YouTubers, or organise tournaments in more casual goofy games like Ultimate Chicken Horse, Duck Game, Mount Your Friends, Golf with Friends, or Rock of Ages and still draw in viewers. This is a common method of cross-promotion.
Variety streamers also play party games like Quiplash, Cards Against Humanity, or Mario Party as a backdrop for conversation with other streamers.
They sometimes play competitive games in a team with other streamers, but the necessity of coordinating within the squad in League of Legends, PUBG or CS:GO means more airtime will be dedicated to the actual game, and banter will suddenly have to make way for tactics.
Events and Broadcasting
E-sports events have legitimacy, teams, sponsors, brand recognition that draws an audience, and commentators.
E-sports broadcasters usually call the commentators their “talent“, not the players. The players or “athletes“ come and go, and they get sponsor money from elsewhere, but the commentators and moderators are hired by the broadcaster/event organiser. The commentators are usually both entertaining personalities and knowledgeable about the game. They fill dead air with background info about he players and their recent matches, explain what’s going on, crack jokes, or just do play-by-play commentary. Viewers are often more attached to commentators than to players. There are usually two commentators and a dedicated off-screen observer controlling the spectator camera, in addition to a referee spectating the game, and the players. Additional moderators and interviewers may be on the stage during an e-sports event. Sometimes experts (retired pro gamers) are brought in to analyse a replay in the pause between matches, like in real sports.
While variety streamers play both the role of “entertainer“ and player, this is split up between players and the commentators/moderators, so players can focus on winning and commentators can focus on filling dead air.
By “legitimacy” I mean this: Players in tournaments are supposed to the best of the best, and the organiser’s brand guarantees that viewers won’t see any old boring game, but a pro game with high stakes. If there is a random member of the public in the pool, you know he played his way through some preliminary rounds. I could host a LAN party, throw a Kernel Panic tournament, and declare the winner the 2021 world champion, but I would not have any legitimacy in the eyes of the player base. Large prize pools, a structured and well-regulated tournament, big-name players, and a blessing from the developers can bestow legitimacy.
Getting players, sponsors, broadcasters and an audience into a room takes a lot of money. E-sports sponsors are usually manufacturers or brands of higher-priced gaming hardware, like Alienware, Razer and ASUS ROG, or snack foods and energy drinks. The products are either used by the pro gamers, thematically connected to the game in some way, or used by the audience. Snack foods go well with watching e-sports, but less well with playing. You wouldn’t want to eat a packet of crisps and move your hands back and forth between the crisps and the keyboard and mouse...
With so much money invested and riding on the success of e-sports events, there is a lot of incentive to diversify and look for the next big thing, but also
Takeaway
When you read news about a developer or publisher “establishing a game as an e-sport“, it often means throwing money at a tournament and getting sponsors on board.
When you read about a developer “adding e-sports features“, it often means a ladder, tournaments, or spectator mode.
Of all the prerequisites established above, the most important to establish a game as an e-sport are:
balance
skill measurement/high skill ceiling
easy to learn
interesting to watch
fun to watch
A game like Fall Guys is popular and “fun to watch“, but not particularly interesting, the drama only works if you follow a single player all the way to the last round, not if you watch the action from high up. Fall Guys has a lot of randomness and a low skill ceiling.
Amazon once even hosted a casual game tournament in which variety streamers played mobile games against each other. The goal of that event was to sell their Fire (Android) tablets. This did not kick-start a competitive mobile gaming scene.
There were rumours of EA trying to “establish“ Star Wars: Battlefront II as an e-sport, by funding a large tournament, but the game was neither interesting nor fun to watch.
It is a fool’s errand to “add e-sports to a game, instead of trying to make a good game first, or at least one that is fun to watch.

How Much Exercise Does a Dog Need Every Day?
Tumblr media
If you own a dog, you have probably found yourself wondering “How much exercise does a dog need every day?” Depending on your schedule, that question might sometimes sound more like “How much exercise does a dog really need every day?”
As with people, the answer varies from dog to dog and is dependent on age, health, and breed. There are a few standard guidelines you can follow, however, to make sure that your dog is getting all the exercise she needs.
Tumblr media
How Much Daily Exercise Does a Puppy Need?
You might have noticed that your puppy gets a case of the “zoomies” several times a day. The zoomies are easily identified, and symptoms include madly racing around the house, followed by collapsing into a puppy pile, preferably in your lap.
Puppies generally have more energy than adult dogs and so require more exercise in short bursts — like the zoomies. Since puppies are constantly growing, including several short walks or play sessions throughout the day is a safer choice than going for one really long walk, as this can be too hard on your puppy’s developing body. Ultimately, every puppy is different, and the more time you spend with your pup the more you will learn about how much exercise she needs to keep her happy — and you sane!
Talk to your vet or breeder about how much daily activity is appropriate for your puppy, and don’t forget that exercise is a great way to train and socialize your new dog.
Tumblr media
How Much Exercise Does an Adult Dog Need?
Your dog’s breed heavily influences the level of physical activity he needs. High-energy breeds, such as Border Collies and Belgian Malinois, require a lot more exercise than low-energy breeds like the Bulldog or Basset Hound.
A breed’s exercise requirements are important to keep in mind when choosing a puppy. It is not a good idea to buy an active dog breed, unless you already lead an active lifestyle, and it is unrealistic to expect your toy Poodle to join you for marathon training – unless you are pushing him in a stroller.
Your dog’s health is also important. If your adult dog has a medical condition, such as hip dysplasia or heart or respiratory issues, talk with your vet about an appropriate exercise routine that will help him stay healthy without causing him discomfort.
How Much Exercise Does a Senior Dog Need?
Your senior dog might not be able to run as far as she once did, and you might have to eventually restrict her run to a walk, but proper exercise is just as important for your senior dog as it is for your puppy. Talk with your vet about exercising your senior dog, and also observe her behavior. As the owner, you know your dog best and are the best judge of how much exercise your dog can comfortably handle.
Exercise provides all dogs with mental stimulation and keeps them active, which can help prolong their lives and reduce the risk of obesity.
Tumblr media
Tips on Dog Exercise
“How much exercise does a dog need every day?” is often the first question owners ask. The second (and one frequently asked by owners of high-energy breeds) is “How do you exercise a dog?”
Taking your dog for a walk around the block is a great start, and it might be enough for breeds with lower exercise requirements. Even couch potatoes appreciate variety every once in a while, however, and there are countless opportunities to exercise your dog in your daily life.
Hiking. Dogs love the great outdoors just as much as you do. Take your dog along on your next adventure or explore some new parks and trails in your area.
Going With You When You Cycle. While not appropriate for all dogs, many dogs go with their owners when they ride. Cycling on the road is often dangerous, but many towns have bike paths where your dog can safely accompany you.
Joining Skaters. Whether you inline skate, Rollerblade, or skateboard, your dog can accompany you. Just be sure to skate in an enclosed area at first while training your dog to this new activity, and always wear appropriate safety gear.
Swimming. Most dogs love the water, and swimming is great for dogs with joint problems, as it provides low-impact exercise. A life jacket can help your dog stay in the water longer for an optimum cardio workout.
Fetch. Fetch doesn’t have to be boring. Shake up your dog’s fetch routine by making her run uphill to retrieve a ball, or by tossing a ball into the water. Alternate between balls, Frisbees, or other prized toys to keep your dog on her toes.
Draft Work. Dogsledding isn’t just for sled dog breeds. Larger breeds often enjoy draft work, whether it involves a sled, a cart, or skijoring, and these activities are also fun for people.
Obedience. Obedience work might not seem like exercise at first glance, but practicing recall, retrieving, and reinforcing basic commands offers mental stimulation, as well as exercise. You can also teach your dog fun new tricks like weaving and twirling.
Dog Sports. With so many dog sports to choose from, you and your dog can try a variety of activities or stick with your favorites. Lure coursing, scent work, agility, obedience, flyball, dock diving, Schutzhund, and Rally are just a few of the options available.
Tumblr media
Indoor Dog Exercises
Inclement weather can throw a wrench in your dog’s exercise routine. Hot days, cold days, and rainy days make it difficult to get outside for long periods of time, and may even pose health risks. Here are some indoor dog exercises you and your pup can do to burn off steam and stay in shape.
Stairs. Running up and down the stairs a few times when you can’t get outside is great for building muscle. Just be sure not to push your dog too hard, as this exercise is just as strenuous for dogs as it is for people. Take special care with Dachshunds, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and other dogs with longer backs and shorter legs, because stairs may prove more challenging for these dogs.
Hide-and-Seek. Hide-and-seek gets your dog moving and provides mental stimulation. You can also work in a game of chase.
Treadmill. If you’re looking for a great dog exercise for high-energy breeds, look no further than a treadmill. With careful training, your dog may grow to love her treadmill workouts. While they are not a replacement for a walk or a run outside, treadmills build endurance and don’t rely on decent weather.
Tug. Games of tug, when played properly, build muscle and the human-animal bond. Most dogs enjoy tug, and there are a wide variety of tug toys available.
Agility. When we think of agility, we usually think of outdoor courses or large indoor agility spaces. However, you can make your own agility course with household supplies, such as broom handles, boxes, Hula-Hoops, and ottomans. Practice your agility skills at home, or consider joining a local club with an indoor agility space.
