my top bit of advice going into the new year: compliment people. especially strangers. literally everyone you interact with if you can. when you buy coffee in the morning compliment the barista's tattoos. when you're chatting with a coworker tell them that by the way you like their outfit. always find something they've chosen to do on purpose. nail polish, jewellery, tattoos, hair colour/style, statement accessory, outfit, etc are all good bets. things people hope will be noticed. things that aren't too personal so it doesn't make them uncomfortable (eg probably not their physical features). i've gotten into the habit of scanning everyone i talk to for something about them that i think is cool so i can tell them. it's a great habit because it makes me notice people and realise just how many neat little details there are in people's presentation of themselves that might pass me by if i wasn't paying attention. and it brings out so much joy. you'd be surprised how much it disarms people to receive an unexpected compliment from someone they don't know. it is the most sincere smile you will see all day long. it feels nice to make people happy but it also means you win the social interaction. establish dominance by complimenting a stranger's earrings and disappearing into the fog

the weirdest fucking thing to me is how men will be like "it's so hard being a man. no one cares that i'm sad. the loneliness we experience could NEVER be understood by a woman" and then also be like "btw i never talk to my friends and i don't know their names and i love hanging out with men because they don't talk about their stupid emotions all the time. women could never understand a bond like this." like ???

having good & true friends will literally save and protect you in a million unfathomable ways. like okay we have written so many times about lovers. but the way a platonic friend laughs and cries with you. the way they hold your hand at 14 years old and at 34. the way they keep a little silver tie to you, touching base over and over and over. how you can go years without talking, only to re-meet and discover: oh shit! you're still cool!

there are people who have been in my life for more than half of it, and i have loved every version of them. do you know how fucking beautiful that is. yeah love will save the world. but the way friends love you is gonna save the you.

similar thing happened to me on overwatch once, a teammate was flaming me and the only insults he could come up with were slurs so i told him to be original and he said "well, how about this, you, uh, woman" like it was an insult but since it's been so long since i've been misgendered like that i couldn't take it seriously and just ended up laughing so hard i got a warning for inappropriate communication when i logged on the next day. i now use she/her online (not solely) because of this; it doesn't give dysphoria anymore it just makes me giggle a bit

another funny gender moment for me was when i was playing tf2 and someone on my team referred to me with he/him

and it threw me off for a second because i'm just not used to being referred to by anything other than she/her i realized i was otherwise completely fine with it

so i just thought to myself "well at least now i know for sure i'm fine with any pronouns"

that person was also calling me a clueless f2p but i didn't really care because it was true and them and some others on my team ended up helping me learn how to play which was very cool

so anyways, thank you random tf2 players for helping me figure out my pronouns and how to play medic
