Almost 700 followers???
Oh my GOSH you guys!! What the heck!! Thank you! When I started this blog almost four years ago I never thought I’d make it past ten or fifteen followers, much less almost 700! Not to mention the amazing people I’ve met and the wonderful friends I’ve made! Thank you, all of you, so much!
As a thank you gift, have the first half of the second chapter of In the Basement, In the Sky! I’ve posted some of it in bits and pieces but never the whole thing all together, and there is quite a bit of new stuff for you, even if you’ve read all my excerpts and tags!
If you haven’t read the first chapter, find it here!
Again, this is from the rough draft, and some things will be changing in the second! I already have a bunch of notes. But it’s not ready for concrit, please keep that in mind!
tw: lots of drugs, mentions of past character death, a racist comment toward Jen
Funshine and Smartypants are in the parking lot at 10:00 pm sharp. Kylie’s still at work -- evening shift, tonight -- so he doesn’t hear your phone ring, and for some reason, you’re grateful for that. This time when you text Ashley to double check your meeting place. The first checkpoint.
She texts back right away: Yep. Got everything you asked for. You got the money?
You bite your lip. You don’t got the money. You have seven dollars. Phone still in hand, you pull your jacket on, huge pockets stuffed full of water bottles they won’t let you bring in. You’ve already eaten your Sweet Tart blotter and you’ve saved the second in the pack for Funshine.
Smartypants doesn’t do acid anymore. Not since Mouse.
You text Funshine as you bound down the stairs. Can I borrow some cash tonight?
What’s up?
I owe Molly.
Oh, ya, of course! I just have to stop by an atm.
And by that time you’re in her car, in the backseat, unloading water bottles into the seat beside you.
Once you’ve settled in, you text Ashley back. Sry for the delay. I’ve got it. Text you when I’m close?
Sounds good. :)
You gonna be at the party tonight?
Nah. I have a project for school. But next time, definitely. See you at the first point.
“Jen!” Funshine whines, flailing her hand back near your face. “Close the door! It’s fucking cold out there!”
“Sorry!” You laugh and pull your legs in, then close the door behind you. Funshine stops batting around but still reaches around to find your face, and you catch her wrist and press a kiss to her palm. Then you reach for Smartypants’s hand, and carefully bend it at the elbow to bring it closer so you can kiss his knuckles.
Friends do that, right? That’s normal!
“Who’s ready to go dance it the fuck up?” Funshine screams.
“Hell yeah!” You and Smartypants throw your hands up as high as two adults can in such a small car, and Smartypants still knocks his hand against the roof anyway.
“Let’s do this shit!” Funshine turns up the radio -- it’s Mindless Self Indulgence -- and you all whoop and start to sing along.
Funshine only turns the music down when she parks at the bank to go into the atm. Smartypants is unusually quiet. He’s not telling you about an awesome new book or comic he’s found, or a weird old audio cassette he got at a thrift store, or even singing under his breath along to the now quiet music.
“Smarty?” you ask. “You okay?”
“I just need to talk to you both about something when Funshine gets back.”
You unbuckle your seatbelt so you can lean between the two front seats and look at his profile, trying to read it for a clue, but you’ve never been good at reading people, have you? So you take his hand and he wraps his fingers tight around yours and presses your knuckles to his cheek. That’s when you feel the stubble you’ve never seen because he keeps it shaved so close.
You squeeze his hand.
“You’re looking good,” you say. “Is the T working out for you? Do you like it? I can hear your voice cracking a little. That’s good, right?”
“I think so,” Smartypants says, soft and faraway, like he’s not quite there. “I think this is what I want, anyway. I’m just afraid I’ll get too masculine, you know?”
“I wish I could say I did.” You press your knuckles a little closer to his cheek. “Are you going to take, like, half doses or something? Or are you going full speed ahead like Funshine with the estrogen?”
“Lower doses,” Smartypants says. “My doctor says it should help with looking and sounding more androgynous.”
But he’s staring out the window as he speaks to you, eyes a little vacant. You follow his gaze. He’s staring at the back of Funshine’s head while she struggles with the atm. Your acid candy hasn’t kicked in yet, but maybe hers kicked in faster? Did she even take it yet? Not while she’s driving, right? You all learned your lesson when --
When he looks back at you, it’s with a lopsided grin.
“No more periods, at least.”
“Hell yeah!” You’ve never had one, thank god, but from everything you know it sounds horrible.
“Right?” he laughs. You both jump when someone knocks on his window but when you turn, it’s just Funshine making faces at you. You stick your tongue out and cross your eyes.
Funshine jumps back in the car again and lets out a huff and a full-body shiver, like a cat.
“Jay-sus it’s cold out there!” she squeaks.
“Here.” You drop your jacket over her head and she slips it on over her My Little Pony t-shirt and her armfuls of kandy, sighing contentedly.
“Mm. Thanks, Jen-jen. I’ll give it back when you need it again.” She moves to take the car out of park, but Smartypants stills her hand. He weaves his fingers with hers and says,
“So, I don’t want to harsh the vibe or anything, but… it’s coming up.”
Everyone goes silent. Funshine even turns off the music completely.
“Yeah,” she whispers. You can’t find words. You just nod.
“How’s everyone doing?” Smartypants asks gently.
“We should be asking you that.” Funshine kisses his wrist. “You came out worse than any of us.”
“Not Mouse.” Smartypants chokes on his words, and a shiver runs down your spine and swirls in your stomach. It heaves, once, and you breathe deep through your nose so you won’t vomit.
“I know,” Funshine says gently. “But even though we all still miss him, I don’t think he’d want us to be sad, you know?” She chuckles, wet and heavy. “Even though we can’t help it. I loved my little Mouse.”
In the backseat, alone, your hands start trembling. You bite your lip. Your heart starts going at a thousand beats a minute, and a bright red burning in your face joins the cold in your stomach. Funshine and Smartypants are still talking about your dead best friend, but their speech is foggy and confusing and not-quite-words.
Somewhere in the back of you head you knew the second anniversary of the accident was coming up. Maybe that’s why you’ve been getting high so much more often. But it wasn’t a concrete thing until Smartypants had to open his stupid mouth about it --
Your head suddenly goes a little light and a tremble hits the back of your neck and something starts scratching at the window. Funshine and Smartypants jerk back to look at you when you shriek. You unbuckle your seatbelt and get tangled up as you try to pull away from that horrifying sound and whatever’s making it, but you can’t, you’re stuck, you’re stuck here forever and --
“Jen-jen!” Funshine shouts sternly. You jump. She’s in her seat on her knees and reaches around to cup your face. You screw your eyes closed but she gently shakes your head and says, “No, look at me.”
“Did he take something?” Smartypants asks.
“A candy blotter.”
“Fuck.” A pause. “Did you?”
“No. He gave me one but I’m waiting until just before we get there.”
A sharp, pained whine tumbles from your mouth and you try to pull away again, but Funshine has a firm hold on you. Her head jerks back in your direction.
“Jen,” she coos, softly, gently. She runs her fingers through your hair and gently rubs at your cheeks with her thumbs. “Look at me,” she says.
You open your eyes. Her brown eyes are soft and serious, but not mad. She blows a strand of bright yellow hair out of her face. It’s such a pretty sunshiney color, and it looks so soft, and you want to touch it, but you don’t want to give her the wrong idea or do something that would hurt Kylie.
“You’re okay, Jen,” Funshine whispers. “You’re okay. There’s nothing bad here that will hurt you. It’s all gone away. It’s just you and me and Smarty in my shitty car with the heater on. Do you want some music?”
Your eyes go toward the window but Funshine’s fingers in your hair distract you and you look back at her again.
“Funshine?” you whisper in a tiny voice.
She smiles at you and nods. “That’s me,” she whispers. She turns toward Smartypants and says, “Could you see if we have any chill-out music? I think it would help.”
“Of course.” Smartypants flips down the vanity mirror and starts going through the CDs. “We have, uh, Trocadero, Sufjan Stevens, and that mix CD we got at that one party last summer? Chill-In or whatever?”
“The mix,” Funshine says. Her hand is still on your face, warm and soft, and she reminds you to breathe, so you do, and then the scary whatever it was outside is gone.
Acid. You ate a candy blotter. The thing outside wasn’t real.
Okay. You’re okay now.
You say it aloud when Funshine doesn’t respond. Her shoulders relax and she smiles softly at you.
“Okay,” she says. “We’re just going to have a nice, happy, quiet ride to meet Ashley -- oop! I’ll give you the money now --“ she pulls two twenties from her pocket and puts them in your hand -- “and you’re going to buy the molly, and then we’re going to figure out where to go, and we’re going to go to a kickass warehouse party, and have a great night together, okay?”
You nod. Some of the tension falls off your shoulders at her taking control so you don’t have to think.
“Okay,” you murmur. “Okay.”
Smartypants can’t turn so well to look at you, but you clap a hand on his shoulder and he takes it and gives it a squeeze.
“I know things are rough for all of us right now,” he says gently, “so maybe, after tonight, no acid until we’re feeling better, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
He pats your hand, squeezes it one more time, lets go. Funshine lets go of your face. Another car pulls into the lot.
“We’d better go,” she says. She rights herself in the drivers’ seat. “Last thing we need right now is a cop.”
Smartypants switches the CDs out and turns the volume up just enough to barely hear. Nobody says anything, and you spend the ride looking out the window at all the lights, the headlights and taillights of the other cars, the streetlights, the stoplights. They slowly stretch and spin around each other, like they’re dancing. A particularly bright stoplight melts through the roof of the car, green and red and yellow, and it drips down over you like paint, like liquid sugar, like your favorite strawberry syrup they only have at that one coffee shop by your apartment. It’s warm and thick and sweet, like caramel. You run your fingers through your hair and they come out sticky, and when you move them back in front of your face, the sugar light pulls and drips like spider webs. You lick the tip of your finger. Bitter, sweaty, a hair in there somewhere. Your nose wrinkles and you stick out your tongue and shake your head. Nope, you do not like that at all. This sugar light isn’t for eating.
Then Funshine’s voice comes lilting from the front seat, into the back like little pink and yellow clouds, one at a time, puff, puff, puff. You look up.
“Jen-jen?” she says gently. You can see the back of her ear, her long, beautiful sunshiney-yellow hair, the puffy neckline of the jacket you loaned her. “You good?”
“Yeah.” Your voice is soft, silvery-green, like lavender leaves.
“Okay. We’re about ten minutes away. Can you text Ashley?”
“Oh!” You fumble your phone out of your pocket. “Yeah.”
And you do.
Ten minutes out. It’s cold as fuck so bring a jacket.
Thanks. :)
Funshine takes one hand off the wheel and takes Smartypants’s hand. He kisses her knuckles, her wrist. Her nails are painted to match the rest of her yellow makeup.
And you look at Smartypants, really look at him for the first time all night. His shoulders are slumped, like he’s just gotten terrible news, and his neck is tight, and in the reflection of the vanity mirror you can see how glossy his eyes are.
You miss Mouse, too. He was your best friend. But you weren’t the one driving while you were fucked up on acid and god knows what else. You don’t remember. Everything about that night but the impact is a blur.
With a heavy sigh you scrub at your face with the soft, satiny light. It’s warm and wonderful and it helps so much.
Funshine turns into a back alley behind an apartment building. Does Ashley actually live here? You don’t know. Ashley might not even be her real name.
Funshine puts the car in park but leaves it running, and you both unbuckle your seatbelts, so she can give your jacket back.
“Be safe, Jen,” Smartypants says. His first words since your freakout. “Promise me, okay?” His words are tight-knotted cords, dark blue and black, like Mouse’s favorite colors were. You smile and pat his shoulder.
“I’ll be fine!” you laugh, a thin cloud of lime green smoke, curling up at the ends. “I’ve been out while higher and on worse.”
You leave the car before he can worry any more and walk in carefully measured paces until you reach the corner of the alley in front of the car. Ashley’s there, in a wool peacoat that goes down to her knees, smoking a cigarette, one foot kicked up against the wall as she leans back. More like a model than a drug dealer. You raise a hand in greeting and she nods back.
It’s a ritual, now. When you approach, you each take the other’s right hand and exchange the money for the pills, pull each other in for a hug just a second too short to be friendly, and slide your hands back in your pockets. Only someone really looking would notice it wasn’t just a hug.
“Easy peasy Japanesey,” she says. She pinches your cheek and pats it a little too roughly. “Don’t text tomorrow or Friday. All day or night. Wait until the weekend.”
“Sure,” you say.
“You want the old empty warehouse on Irving near O’Hare.”
You frown. “Is that really safe?”
She shrugs. “I’m not going, not my problem.”
She doesn’t stay to make small talk.
You wave halfheartedly at her back and mumble a soft, “Later.”
The way she belittles you because of your race makes your skin crawl and your stomach churn, but she’s got the cleanest drugs in the city. Her attitude and the potential for a bad trip, though? It’s an absolutely terrifying combination. So when you enter the car and Funshine holds out her hand for the jacket, you take it and squeeze for a moment, instead.
“Jen?”
“Jen, are you all right?” Smartypants asks.
You smile at them and close the door, pulling the pills out of your pocket and handing the jacket over to Funshine.
“Give me about forty-five minutes and I’ll be fine as hell.”
“You’re already fine as hell!” Funshine giggles as she pulls on the jacket.
You snort a laugh and Smartypants shrugs. “I mean, she’s not wrong!” he adds, and he’s smiling now, too, and finally everything is good again.
“We’re going out to that empty warehouse by O’Hare, on Irving Park.”
“Okay!” Funshine shouts gleefully. And then, “Who wants to listen to some motherfucking Toy-Box?”

OFFICIALS OF TABLIGHI JAMAAT CHARGED WITH DEFYING RESTRICTIONSTablighi Jamaat:
Tablighi Jamaatliterally the Outreach Society, is an Islamic missionary movement that focuses on urging Muslims to return to practising their religion as it was practised during the lifetime of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
Focuses particularly in matters of ritual, dress and personal behavior.
The organisation is estimated to have between 150 million to 250 million adherents (the majority living in South Asia.
A presence in somewhere between 180 and 200 countries.
It has been called “one of the most influential religious movements in 20th century Islam”.
The movement was founded in 1927 by Muhammad Ilyas al-Kandhlawi in Mewat region of India.
Nizamuddin Markaz:
Nizamuddin Markaz Masjidor Banglewali Masjid is a mosque located in Nizamuddin West in South Delhi, India.
It is the global center for the Tablighi network and birthplace of the Tablighi Jamaat, the missionary and reformative movement started by Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi.
Why in News?
Thousands of people from across the country, as well as from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia, attended a gathering at the centre earlier this month over a number of days.
Markaz Nizamuddin is the international headquarters of Tablighi Jamaat, a puritanical Islamic sect.
More than 400 people with symptoms were admitted to different hospitals and over 1,100 shifted to government-run quarantine facilities in Delhi alone over Monday and Tuesday.
Hundreds of others who returned home after staying at the centre over the last fortnight might have carried the virus to several States.
The Delhi police on Tuesday registered a case against Maulana Saad and others from Tablighi Jamaat under Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, read with Sections 269, 270, 271 and 120-B of the IPC, for violation of government directions on restriction of gatherings and safety measures, including physical- distancing.
PRE-MONSOON CROP CULTIVATION TALES A HIT
Despite the State government being on overdrive to ensure that agricultural activities continue to be normal during this unprecedented crisis caused by COVID-19, officials are keeping their fingers crossed about pre-monsoon crop cultivation.
Besides the main crops such as ragi and maize, farmers cultivate green gram, black gram and sesame, especially in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan districts, during this season.
According to the official, the preparatory work for sowing normally starts by the first week of April.
In a few places, sowing has been completed, but it has not even commenced in many places.
In agriculture timing, is very important.
If sowing is delayed, it will hurt the yield and overall productivity.
He also said that people across the board were staying indoors and labour was in short supply.
We are appealing to farmers to continue with their agricultural activities while also staying safe.
District administrations are working with dealers to ensure there is enough supply of seeds and fertilizers, the official said.
Explaining the importance of pre-monsoon crop for the kharif crop that will follow, another official said that those who grow pre-summer crops normally let plants grow on their fields after harvesting the crops.
The plant stubs become green manure when farmers prepare the fields when monsoon arrives.
Pre-monsoon crop contributes to less than 10% of the total agricultural production in the State, but remains important
Though pre-monsoon crop depends on early rains in rain-fed regions, farmers with their own irrigation facilities do not wait for the rains.
Meanwhile, in the paddy belt in the irrigated regions of north Karnataka, the crop is waiting to be harvested.
The paddy in fields in Raichur, Ballari, Koppal and Gangavathi were ready for harvesting, but farmers were facing labour issues though the department has allowed them to get farm machineries for harvesting.
ANDHRA BANK FADES INTO HISTORY
Andhra Bank as one of the oldest and well-known household names in the region gets amalgamated with Union Bank of India.
A part of the Central government plan to create four larger banks by merging 10, the move will see Andhra Bank over time coming to be identified as Union Bank of India.
While its fading into history is certain, what, however, will remain in public memory is the long association it built with lakhs of customers, earning their trust and rendering decades of service.
For the Telugu States, it will be second, home grown bank they will have to let go.
State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) was the first when it got merged with the State Bank of India (SBI) in April 2017.
Under the present plan of the Centre, four sets of merger will come into force on Wednesday.
One of them will see Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank amalgamating into Union Bank of India.
The combined entity will be the 5th largest public sector bank and will have the 4th largest branch network of any bank in India.
History:
Andhra Bank was founded by freedom fighter Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya.
Commenced business on November 28, 1923 with a paid up capital of ₹ 1 lakh and an authorised capital of ₹10 lakh.
The present network of the bank comprises nearly 2,900 branches and almost 3,800 ATMs.
Union Bank of India Managing Director and CEO Rajkiran Rai G. had recently said the combined entity will have 9,500 branches and 12,000 ATMs across the country.
Of the 9,500 branches, 700 plus are to be rationalised because of their proximity.
The iconic landmark for denizens of Hyderabad, Andhra Bank’s old headquarters in Koti, is set to get a makeover with a new name. Nagara GopalNagara Gopal.
SC UPHOLDS RIGHT TO DISCUSS COVID-19
The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the right to free discussion about COVID-19.
Even as it directed the media to refer to and publish the official version of the developments in order to avoid inaccuracies and large-scale panic.
It ordered the government to start a daily bulletin on COVID-19 developments through all media avenues in the next 24 hours.
A Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde, was responding to a request from the Central government that media outlets, in the “larger interest of justice”, should only publish or telecast anything on COVID-19 after ascertaining the factual position from the government.
A Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) report in the court, signed by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, explained that “any deliberate or inaccurate” reporting by the media, particularly web portals, had a “serious and inevitable potential of causing panic in larger section of the society”.
The Ministry said any panic reaction in the midst of an unprecedented situation based on such reporting would harm the entire nation.
Creating panic is also a criminal offence under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
A daily bulletin by the Government of India through all media avenues, including social media and forums to clear the doubts of people, would be made active within a period of 24 hours as submitted by the Solicitor- General of India.
Noting that the 21-day nationwide lockdown was “inevitable” in the face of an “unprecedented global crisis” like the COVID-19 pandemic, the government blamed “fake and misleading” messages on social media for creating widespread panic, which led to mass “barefoot” journey of migrant workers from cities to their native villages in rural India.
Fake News:
Deliberate or inadvertent fake news and material capable of causing a serious panic in the minds of the public is found to be the single most unmanageable hindrance in the management of this challenge.
The Ministry said the Narendra Modi government, in fact, took “pro-active, pre-emptive and timely” action 13 days before even the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a “public health emergency of international concern”.
But the mass migration of the poor would defeat the preventive measures taken by the Central government.
It said “there was no necessity for migrant workers to rush to their villages” when the Centre, fully conscious that no citizen should be deprived of basic amenities.
It had announced a ₹1.70 lakh crore package under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana to take care of their daily needs.
MINISTRY, SCIENTIFIC ADVISER DIFFER ON MASK USE
India’s highest science advisory body, the office of the Principal (PSA), and the Union Health Ministry appear out of sync on whether masks should be widely used by people.
The Ministry’s standing recommendation is that not everybody should be wearing masks.
Among those who are not healthcare workers, only those who had a cough or exhibited signs of a flu or a respiratory illness need to be wearing them as did those caring for COVID-19 patients.
The reason this isn’t recommended for the public at large — though now almost anyone on the street can be seen to be wearing them — is that it will lead to a shortage and unavailability for doctors, nurses and other hospital staff.
On Tuesday, however, the office of the PSA through the Press Information Bureau recommended the widespread use of masks.
It endorsed, above all, home-made masks that could easily be made and were reusable with washing and sanitising.
The key criteria for proposed designs are ease of access to materials, easy of making at home, and ease of use and reuse.
Wearing of masks is especially recommended for people living in densely populated areas across India,” notes the advisory.
The office of the PSA is a key coordinating agency among government scientific bodies and industry to accelerate decisions on dealing with COVID-19.
It does not recommend the use of the health mask or the N95 mask that are expensive, not-reusable and largely used in hospital settings.
Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Health Ministry, which is the nodal agency for monitoring the pandemic, said it was “studying the recommendations” of the office of the PSA.
Health Ministry spokesperson Lav Agrawal said at the daily press briefing on Tuesday, “The World Health Organization hasn’t given a categorical opinion on its [mask] usage.
However, a technical committee is looking into this issue and suitable guidelines will be issued soon.
Our stress is on social distancing.
We request that not everyone wear a mask. We have defined guidelines on who should and shouldn’t be wearing one.
Raman Gangakhedkar, who was also at the briefing as a representative of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said: “There’s a wide gap between the number of cases in the United States and India and the risk of exposure isn’t as much here.
Hence only those sick or at risk of exposure should be wearing them.
Other than the question of shortage, the scientific consensus was that COVID-19 was not an airborne disease and most people contracted it through coming into contact with infectious droplets picked up from surfaces.
The government’s policy regarding the use of masks is evolving. Probably they are now taking more notice of the fact there may be a sizeable number of asymptomatic carriers of the infection.
Some studies suggest nearly 25% of COVID-19 infected may be asymptomatic — and wearing a mask is a good precautionary measure.
The March 31 advisory from the office of the PSA recommends the use of home-made cotton masks that are reusable after appropriate washing and disinfection that can be done at home.

Need to Cash a Check After Hours? Here are 18 Ways to Do It
What are my options for 24 hour check cashing places near me?
Traditional banking hours don’t work for everyone. Have you ever needed to cash a check when traditional banks were closed? Maybe you work a second shift job and need to do your banking after midnight.
Or maybe, for whatever reason, you just like to do your financial transactions when others are asleep. Lucky for you there are places that will cash your checks any time day or night.
Next time cash or deposit your check at the bank. Earn 1.75% APR when you open a CIT Savings Builder account and deposit $100 per month…or you can go to a mega bank and earn and earn 0.01% APR.
Now, ideally, you’d do your banking during regular business hours. If you have to use some of these late night banking options, you might pay a fee to do so.
But if “normal” isn’t an option, you’ve got some choices. Here are some places you can go to cash checks 24 hours a day. If you have a money order you need to cash, read this article for the best ways to make that happen.

24 Hour Check Cashing Stores
There are thousands of check cashing stores around the U.S. and the world. Most are not open 24 hours. Some are. Here is a list of three check cashing stores that have some locations which are always open.
1. PLS Transportation Services and Check Cashing
PLS Transportation Services and Check Cashing offers checking cashing and other financial services.
They’re open 24 hours a day and have locations in 12 states, including:
Arizona
California
Illinois
Indiana
Kentucky
Massachusetts
New York
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Texas
Wisconsin
If you live near a PLS location you can cash your checks any time; day or night. They’ll cash paychecks, personal checks, government checks and others.
The fee PLS will charge depends on the location. Most locations charge $1 plus 1 percent of the  check amount.
Note: PLS also offers notary services and fax services too.
2. Speedy Cash
Speedy Cash is a check cashing and payday loan store that will cash nearly all types of checks. They’ll cash payroll checks, government checks, personal checks, and student loan checks.
They are fine for check cashing but do not use them for anything else. Their website shows they charge up to 450% APR on loans! Yes, four hundred and fifty percent interest. Compare that to credit cards with an average of 17% APR.
They also cash settlement checks, insurance checks, money orders and other checks.
Speedy Cash has locations throughout the United States. Most – but not all – locations are open 24 hours.
Note: They will charge you a minimum of $2 to cash your check.
3. Community Financial Service Center
Community Financial Service Center has over 200 locations in the U.S. They’ll cash a variety of check types, including:
Payroll checks
Government checks
Social security checks
Benefit checks
Income tax refund checks
And others. Fees for check cashing vary by location. Check limits also vary by location. Also, not all Community Financial Service Center locations are open 24 hours. Contact a location near you for their business hours.
Next, we’ll talk about some grocery store companies that offer check cashing.
Grocery Stores That Will Cash Checks
There are a few grocery that will cash checks 24 hours a day. Note that not all locations of all grocery stores are open 24 hours.
4. Walmart
Nearly all Walmart locations have check cashing counters. Many times the check cashing counters are open when the store is open. In other words, if the store is open 24 hours, so is the check cashing counter.
However, some Walmart stores close their check cashing service during overnight hours. If this is happens, simply ask if their cashiers do check cashing.
Note: There may be lower check cashing limits at the cash register.
This is so the registers aren’t drained of funds needed for giving customers change.
Walmart will cash many different types of checks. They’ll often cash:
Payroll checks
Government checks
401k checks
Cashier’s checks
Settlement checks
And more
You can even cash money orders there if they were purchased at Walmart. Most Walmart locations charge between $3 and $6 to cash a check. This fee may vary by location.
5. WinCo Foods
WinCo Foods is a large grocery chain in the Western United States. You can find a WinCo Foods store in the western U.S, Oklahoma and Texas.
WinCo will only cash payroll checks up to $1,000 per person. They will also accept up to two payroll checks within the same week. Your payroll checks must also be machine printed to be cashed at WinCo.
Note: They’ll charge between $5 and $10 to cash a check depending on the amount.
6. Tops Friendly Market
Tops Friendly Market has nearly 200 locations in NY, PA and VT . They offer check cashing services for government checks and payroll checks only.
Fees for check cashing are minimal at Tops – only $1 per cashed check. However, they have lower check cashing limits too – often “topping” out at $500. 🙂
Note: Tops Friendly Markets are open 24 hours. Check with a location near you to make sure before going in.
ATM Machines at Banks
If you need to cash a check after hours, you’ll have the best luck at a 24-hour ATM.  There are a few check cashing stores and grocery stores open 24 hours. However, there are many banks that have 24 hour access to ATMs.
Now, you’re not officially cashing a check when you use an ATM. The process used to cash a check via an ATM is a bit different.
When you use an ATM, you’re simply making a check deposit. Then, once the check is received you are simply making a withdrawal.
Also, you will need an account at the bank that owns the ATM to use this method. If you do not, your bank could also be a partner with the bank that owns the ATM. Keep in mind, almost all banks and credit unions offer 24 hour ATM access.
If you don’t, you can open one to have access to 24 ATMS and get your checks cashed. I’d highly recommend getting a bank account to avoid fees and have that convenience.
Note: Not all banks offer immediate withdrawals from ATM deposits.
7. Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo has branch locations throughout the United States. In fact, they’ve got over 8,000 branch locations and over 13,000 ATM machines worldwide.

Their ATMs typically allow customers to cash government, payroll, cashier’s and some personal checks. Note that U.S Bank ATM machines are set to only accept deposits of 30 checks at one time.
9. Bank of America
Bank of America has numerous of locations all over the world. In fact, they have over 4,000 branch locations and over 15,000 ATMs worldwide.
To cash a check at a BofA ATM, it must be printed with magnetic ink. In other words, an ATM will not accept a check if printed from home.
Home-printed checks can only be cashed inside the bank, and they may put a hold on your check.
Note: You can deposit up to 10 checks at a time at Bank of America ATMs.
 10. Citibank
Citibank has bank ATM locations in the U.S. and around the world. There are over 700 branch locations in the U.S. And, there are thousands of other locations around the world.

Personal checks
Cashier’s checks

11. Chase Bank
Chase Bank was founded in 2000. Well, technically its parent companies have been around a lot longer than that. Chase Bank is the offspring of Chase Manhattan Bank and J.P Morgan & Co.  There’s a little fun financial geek trivia for you.
Chase Bank has grown rapidly, with over 5,000 branches and 16,000 ATMs around the world. You can cash the following checks at Chase Bank:
Government checks
Payroll checks
Personal checks
Cashier’s checks there.

If you’re a 360 account owner you can cash payroll, government, personal checks and more. Check with Capital One regarding ATM limits and settings.
13. TD Bank
There are over 1,300 TD Bank locations in the U.S. situated on the Eastern half of the country. They operate in 15 states and in Washington D.C. Their website tagline says they’re “America’s Most Convenient Bank”.
If you have an account at TD Bank you can cash government checks, payroll checks and more. You can deposit up to 30 checks at one time using a TD Bank ATM.
14. Citizens Bank
Citizens Bank operates over 1,200 branch locations and 3,000 ATMs in 11 U.S. states. You can find a Citizens Bank all over the northeastern U.S., Michigan and Ohio.
Per the Citizens website, you can deposit all checks-without an envelope.

Individual bank account rules apply when it comes to cashing checks at a SunTrust ATM.
17. M&T Bank
M&T Bank operates in eight U.S. States including New York, New Jersey, Maryland, West Virginia and more. They have branches in Washington D.C. as well.
There are nearly 800 branch locations in the U.S. If you’re an M&T customer you can cash government checks, payroll checks and more at their ATMs.
Fun fact: M&T Bank was founded in 1856. They must be doing something right.
18. Valley National Bank
Valley National Bank was founded in 1927 and serves New Jersey, New York, Florida and Alabama. If you have a Valley National Bank account, you can use their ATM to cash payroll, government and other checks.
Note: Check depositing and withdrawal limits can vary based on branch locations.
Takeaway
Chances are, you landed here because you are looking to cash a check after hours. If the check you’re cashing is less than $1,000, I would start off with your local Wal-Mart. Then, if Wal-Mart isn’t an option, I would next contact your closest grocery store. If not those two, then find your closest ATM.
Let this situation be a great learning lesson. When you need cash now, make sure you have cash now. I would recommend setting up an emergency fund or a savings account for larger purchases. A great way to jump start your starter emergency fund is by turning your free time into cash via side hustles.
Thanks so much for reading and good luck with your check cashing adventure!

5. WinCo Foods

Do you know of any auto insurance companies that don't base your rates on your credit report?
Due to an illness/ disability in our family, despite having health insurance, we still owe thousands in medical bills. Those that would not work with us turned them into collection. They now show on our credit report. Despite being insured for both our auto insurance and our home insurance for 20+ year with the same insurance company, we got a notice saying our auto insurance had gone up hundreds of dollars per year based on a credit report they obtained. We have never had an accident, ticket, etc. and the amount automatically comes out of our checking each month. Plus, last year, prior to this, they switched us to a preferred group within the company and gave us a discount when we threatened to switch. How can I find out which insurance companies base your insurance rates on your credit report and or score? Will they tell you outright? This is the first I have ever known that our company did this and was wondering if all of them do it, or do you just know about it when you get a notice like we did? I get their reasoning but it seems like such a rip off when so many are in our boat- insured but with insurance that is starting to pay less and less and cost more. Plus, they have our checking account and if we were not to pay, they wouldn't be responsible for us if we had an accident anyway. Seems like a double whammy to me. Can anyone help?""

Provisional is coming in at approx 1300, which I can cope with for the year but as soon as I pass my test BAM! prices are looking at about 2,700. I've tried confused.com, comparethemarket, confused.com, gocompare etc and the prices between provisional and full licence are topping 1,200 in difference. Does anyone know of any websites designed for new drivers or maybe places i could look and get quotes which aren't on comparison websites? or maybe any tips that I could use to reduce the quotes because they are ridiculous. We've added on two drivers with over 30+ years each on and also my boyfriend with 7yrs no points. all have no convictions, record, points etc. Thanks :) Kirsty""

Is it illegal in California to drive an insured car even though you're not insured?
I heard that in the state of California, as long as the car itself is insured, it doesnt matter if the driver himself/herself is insured or not, and that the driver needs to be insured only if he/she is driving a car that isn't insured. Let's say a teen driver wants to drove his/her parents' car, but the teen isn't listed, but not excluded, from the insurance plan. As long as the car is covered, its okay for the teen to drive it. The only exception is if the parents put on the insurance plan that the teen is excluded from the plan ('____ is excluded from the plan'). Is any of this true? Thanks in advance.""

The contemporary condition of the mission\n\nCassini was provided with ternary gravity wait on boosts to make the aircraft reach Saturn in the similar of 68 040 kilograms of uprise fuel. The last scrap of orbital nervous impulse was got form Jupiter and Cassini-Huygens aircraft was ready to go on the 30th of celestial latitude 2000. The date of missions reaching on Saturn is July 2004. posterior the process of separating of Huygens from Cassini it takes the investigation 22 geezerhood to get to the surface of Titan. After the reaching the briny(prenominal) goal was to let Huygens explore the surface. In aver to do it Huygens was parachuted to Titans surface in January 2005 to take canvasss. Therefore Huygens is on Titans surface season Cassini is orbiting around Saturn. Huygens has no direct confederacy with Earth. It sends info signals to the orbital Cassini. Cassini in its tern sends the information through its convey to Earth, where the information is see and new requests are presented. Nowadays, Cassini keeps providing invaluable data about Saturn and its division in general. The principal(prenominal) plan of the mission is to complete 75 orbits of Saturn and perform 44 fly-bys of Titan. This does not embarrass minor Saturns other north-polar moons, which are excessively going to be investigated by Cassini. Nowadays, Cassini is perform the task is has been set perfectly, providing repeated flybys of Titan and Huygens keeps providing countless data about Titans surface, its organise, elements and about the reasons of seasonable effect on the moon. As the probe is able to resist temperatures colossal 18 000°C it makes its work very effective because for instance, Saturns temperature is around 11 700°C and the results obtained from the exploration may viewed as rather accurate ones.\n\n2. Spacecraft wrench\n\nThe executor of the mission is the 5.6 tone spacecraft Cassini consisting of cardinal elements: the Huygens probe and the Cassini orbiter. Cassini-Huygens is the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever built. As it has been mentioned before the mission of the examine created by NASA/ESA/ASI is the exploration of Saturn, Titan and the a just nowting region, or loosely saying Saturnian system. The spacecraft consists of two move the Huygens canvass and the Cassini orbital. The Huygens probe was performed by the ESA. This part of the spacecraft is supposed to land on the surface of Saturns most unique moon Titan. The spacecraft is constructed to resist the four-year exploration it is supposed to subscribe to out spot exploring Titan and orbiting Saturn. The Cassini spacecraft was cr eated solely for do probes from the surface of the demand target and for playing observation of space objects. Its foundation was put in 1990 and soothe nowadays Earths scientist may evaluate the priceless of this project. Aerospatiale carried out the unveiling of the Huygens look into. The process occurring with the poke into is the invention of the programming language and it an algorithm. The examine is ready to destroy the surface of a heavenly body solely later onwards it separates from its second part - the Cassini Orbital. The Huygens dig into possesses the founding Assembly, which protects the relationship mental faculty from the outside trespasss. It releases the line Module however after the Probe enters the required place. It is the Descent Mode that contains the probe experiments. The weight of the Probe is estimated as 318 kilograms. How does the Probe keep radio link wit the orbital after the detachment? The reason of this noticeable connection is the 30 kilograms of Probe congest Equipment which beingness a part of Cassini Orbital received Huygens signals and data. The main components of the Orbiter are: a murderer Front End, a Receiver immoderate Stable Oscillator and two Probe place up safe Avionics. The Spin exculpate Device and the umbilical connector provide power and data links between the Probe and Orbiter. The Huygens Probe activity is retained by the Huygens Probe Operations totality in Germany. In its turn, the Jet actuation Laboratory controls the Cassini Orbiter mission and all of the operations; the whole process of talk with the orbiter and the commentary of its data are made through NASAs fatheaded Space Network.\n\n4. block of destination Saturn\n\nThe ordinal planet from the solarize has possessed the attention of earth scientists for a very long time. The prime(prenominal) attempts to examine it were made by Voyager in the 80s. Saturnian year lasts for 29.46 Earth years and Saturnian da y is approximately 10 hours 39 minutes. In addition to all its secrets Saturn is the only planet with blue skies, which makes it make uping more similar to Earth. Saturn has an atmosphere is unique. It consists of the components that are found on the Suns surface. These are helium and hydrogen. The b hostelline between the atmosphere and the surface of the planet is ill defined. What can be possible say in order to characterize Saturns atmosphere correctly? It is rather active and is characterized by intensive winds that blow at a very high speed. On of the reasons Saturn is so amiable for the scientists are the arguments about its surface and its conjure up: solid or liquid. The possibility of finding a solid core cryptical in the bowels of Saturn surface would simply house the sup dumbfound of the existance of liquid metallic hydrogen. angiotensin-converting enzyme of the most characteristic characteristics of Saturn is the presence of the ring structure. Of course, pea l are a prevalent attri hardlye of the structure of the majority of gas giants; nevertheless Saturns rings are very circumscribed and have a very multiform structure.\n\n4.a. Saturns rings and their peculiarities\n\nThe rings of Saturn have been the targets of Saturns exploration not without a significant reason. The famed Cassini division, mentioned earlier is found between the first two rings and in the main consists of dust. Among all the gas giants only Saturn presents its rings in 7 distinct levels or groupings. schematically they are pronounced with the help of the garner A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. This indications help greatly while examining and the differentiating the rings. The attitude of the rings varies from 75 000 to 483 000 km out of the message of the planet. What makes the rings so normal among the scientists? Talking about their specifics it is necessary to mention that the rings being so big in diameter are in fact very thin and have subtle colors. Saturns rings consist mainly from ice and their burdensomeness is measured commencement from microns to meters in sizing.\n\nThe structure of the rings is often related to gravitational perturbations by the many moons of the planet but nevertheless there is tranquillise so much to be explained in order to understand Saturn better. The creation of the Cassini-Huygens mission is the dominance solution of the rest of the unknown facts about Saturns rings.\n\n4.b. The moons of Saturn and its main moon - Titan\n\nNo function how strange it sounds, but Saturn has 31 moons. Their distance from Saturns center varies from 133 583 kilometers (Pan, a moon with the diameter of 20 km) to 12 952 000 kilometers (Phoebe, a moon with the diameter of 220 km). Some of the moons are small and some of them are big. alone of them posses different name: Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Epimetheus, Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Telesto, Calypso, Dione and many more. Nevertheless, Saturns main moon is Tita n. It is not just the main moon of Saturn but also its largest moon. It is necessary to add that an evaluation of Titans sizes in terms of our solar System spend to the conclusion that Titan is the second largest moon in the Solar System. To be concrete it is the largest moon after Jupiters Ganymede. It was Christian Huygens who discovered Titan, as it was mentioned before. Titans distance from Saturn is 1 221 870 kilometers but its rotary motion is synchronous to Saturn. Titans bus is 1.345 x 1023 kilograms or 1/45 of the Earths mass. The temperature of Titan is -180 degrees C. Its atmosphere mainly consists of the adjacent elements: nitrogen, methane, traces of ammonia, argon and ethane. matchless Titanic day lasts approximately 15.95 Earth days. Scientists have discovered a frisk on the surface of Titan with the size compared to a innocent and gave it a strange name of Xanadu. This throw attracts the attention of the scientists and Cassini-Huygens mission is to solve the mysteries covering it. Scientists consider that it would be better for Huygens to land on an marine and not on land. This opinion is right in the first place because in this case Huygens will remain in the proper unspoilt position, which will make the data even more correct.\n\n5. Conclusion\n\nIn family line 2005 Cassini is expected to study Hyperion, a midget moon, at a range of 1,010 kilometers (628 miles). nonentity has examined Hyperion form such a position before. It will still be the perpetuation of Cassinis primary mission with later exploration of Saturns moons Dione and Rhea.\n\nIt is very hard to underestimate Cassinis mission impact into the development of technology and the growth of knowledge humanity possess about Saturn. This is the rule of mysteries for human scientists and so they need to be revealed and unveiled. Saturns many moons and magnificent rings have still so much to tell and to plow along with Titan whose mystery is time lag until is open by th e Cassini-Huygens missions, which will lead approving and neglecting legion(predicate) of scientific assumptions. If you penury to get a full essay, order it on our website: Looking for a place to buy a cheap paper online? Top 11 Best Online Savings Account Banks – Start Making Interest Today!
I remember a time when the best online savings accounts paid annual yields of 4% to 5%.
Those days are long gone. LONG gone.
Thanks to the low-rate environment, it's not a surprise that for the past several years, my clients have been griping about how their savings accounts pay next to nothing, even from the best high-interest banks.
As painful as the interest situation is, looking for a top savings account to stash away some cash for a future financial goal or an unexpected emergency should be part of your financial strategy. But it can be hard to get excited if you don't feel like you are earning any interest on your money.
There are still plenty of online banks that offer excellent terms. Don't let your money sit in a savings account that's going to be eaten by annual fees. You shouldn't have to pay to let your money sit.
The top 11 best online savings accounts that offer high interest rates and super customer service
All the banks on my list are great places to stash your cash. Each can provide different benefits, covered below.
1. CIT Bank Savings – Best Ongoing Interest Rates
If you are looking for a bank to just store some of your cash in for a rainy day, CIT Bank is a great choice. CIT Bank focuses on CDs and savings account, and also IRA options.
You might think, “Why would I go with a bank that just does that instead of one with more options like online checking?”
That’s an understandable question. CIT Bank is in the upper tier of interest rates for all of these institutions, and in some cases comes out ahead of everyone else. On top of their high interest rate they also offer a bonus rate tier for customers that have more than $25,000 saved with them. Essentially, it is a loyalty bonus. Not many banks reward you for being extra loyal.
Aside from the great interest, I think it is sometimes a good thing to limit your account options at a bank. If you open up an account with checking, savings, CDs, investment, and so on it can get tempted to pull money out of the savings or CD to refill your checking account quickly. Having them separated requires more financial discipline at the cost of a little bit of convenience. I think the extra interest you are earning is worth it.
Here’s what you get with CIT Bank:
Upper tier high yield interest rate with high deposit bonus tier. If you deposit a lot of money with CIT, you won’t find a better interest rate anywhere else online.
Low minimums. CIT does have a minimum of $100. That’s measly. And honestly, with any of the banks on this page if you saved just $100 you’re going to earn a whopping $1 interest max in the first year. You need to save more money, but CIT requires $100 to get started.
Easy deposit options. You can fund your account or add additional deposits via easy online transfer from your current bank, mailing in a check, or wire transfer.
Easy access and management. The user interface is easy to use. You’ll be able to transfer funds to and from your other bank easily.
If you are looking for a place to store some cash for a rainy day and want to earn a great interest rate in the meantime, definitely take a look at CIT Bank.
2. Chase Bank – Best Signup Bonus
Chase Bank is a big bank for physical locations with thousands of branches and ATMs across the country.
While they're not as competitive on the interest rates, they do have the best signup bonuses of any bank in the country. You do have to jump through a couple of hoops to get the full $350, though. Here are the full details of their offer:
#bonus { border: 1px solid #DDD; text-align: center; margin-bottom: 30px; }#bonus td { border-top: 0; text-align: center; width: 33%; padding: 10px; }#bonus thead { font-size: 70%; font-weight: 700; text-transform: uppercase; }#bonus h5 { font-size: 200%; margin-bottom: 12px; color: #1976d2; font-weight: 700 !important; }#bonus p { font-size: 85%; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 0; }
Bonus #1 Bonus #2 Total
$200
Open a checking account and set up direct deposit
$150
Open a savings account and deposit $10,000 within 10 days, maintaining the balance for 90 days
$350
While Chase is completely available online, to get the bonus you will have to get your coupon online and then walk into a physical location to set up the account.
Chase Bank also gives you:
Access to over 16,000 Chase ATMs and 5,100 branches
Chase QuickDepositSM lets you deposit checks almost anytime, anywhere with the ease of taking a picture. Just point, snap, and deposit.
3. Ally Bank – Consistently High Interest Rates
Ally Bank is one of my favorite banking institutions. (Yes, we bloggers are a weird bunch and have favorite banking institutions while the rest of the world goes about their normal lives.)
Why do I love Ally so much? Let me quote myself from an article earlier this year, Best Online Checking Accounts:
Ally Bank was built on the premise of getting rid of all the crazy fees that normal banks charge while giving customers great rates and great customer service.
I mean, seriously? How can you not love that? A bank that is fighting to end banks gouging customers will get my vote every time. In the linked article above I told you how great Ally’s checking accounts were, but the saving options are great, too.
Here’s what you get with Ally:
High yield interest rate. You won’t earn more interest with a reputable online bank.
No minimums. At all. That means no minimum deposit, no minimum balance requirement. No minimum balance fees. In fact, you can open an account with as little as $1.
Easy deposit options. You can fund your account or add additional deposits via easy online transfer from your current bank, mailing in a check, wire transfer, or simply scanning in your deposit.
Easy access and management. The user interface is top-notch and you’ll be able to transfer funds to and from your other bank easily.
Other account options. You can start with a savings account and grow your finances with Ally. They offer a robust set of accounts ranging from checking to savings to CDs and IRAs.
Ally is built on not gouging customers for every penny they’ve got. That’s a great bank, and one of the reasons I use this bank in addition to Capital One 360.
4. Everbank – Best One Year Interest Rates
Everbank is one of the longest standing online banks and consistently has some of the best introductory interest rates. Currently their money market account is offering 1.11% for the first year. This gives them one of the strongest savings rates in the industry.
Features you should know about Everbank accounts include:
Low initial deposit of $25
Avoid fees by keeping at least $25 in the account
CD's and Checking accounts available
If you are looking for a solution to get competitive one year interest rates then Everbank will be a good option for your needs.
5. Discover Bank – Best CD Rates
Discover moved into the banking business a few years ago. Their rates are competitive with other online products, so it is definitely a firm to include in your search for a top savings account.
The product offerings are similar with Discover, but I really like Discover’s online CD. The rates on the CDs are very nice compared to some other players in the industry.
Here’s what you get with Discover Bank’s Online Savings account:
Great interest. To attract customers, Discover often has some of the highest interest rates available.
Several account options. You can start with a savings account and expand to an online certificate of deposit, IRA CDs, or a money market account.
Low minimums. This is the only place that you might downgrade Discover on a bit. The other institutions on this page require no minimum or a super low deposit to open an account. Discover requires a $500 minimum deposit. However, there are still no minimum balance requirements or fees for going below $500, so it isn’t much to worry about once you get your account open.
If you are interested in creating a CD ladder to reach a goal or as part of your emergency savings strategy, Discover is a great place to start.
6. Compass Bank BBVA
Compass isn't the most popular bank on our list, but it's one you should know about. BBVA Compass is one of the top largest U.S. commercial banks based on deposit market share.
They offer a wide variety of products and services, everything from small business loans to online savings accounts (because that's why you are here right?)
Interest rate. BBVA Compass offers tiered interest rates that compound to make your money grow faster.
Low initial deposit. While you are required to make an initial deposit, it's a minuscule $25.
Account options. You'll have the freedom to choose between several different account types: Everyday Savings, Money Market, or CD account.
Beware of fees. One of the few negatives of BBVA is their monthly service fees that come along with their accounts. It's only $15 a month, but it's something that should be noted when opening up an account.
If you haven't heard of Compass Bank BBVA, you should take the time to familiarize yourself with the organization, their online money market account will make it worth your time.
7. USAA – Best for Military
*Be aware that you must have a family member this is serving/has served in a branch of the military to open an account with USAA.
Aside from being an exceptionally reputable organization, as an online savings account, USAA offers several unique benefits that the other banks on this list don't. You can get a HUGE variety of different products with USAA. They offer just about any financial or insurance product you could ever need, and having all of your account and product in one place is an impressive advantage.
What you'll get with USAA:
Use just about any ATM. If you ever need to get money out of your online savings account at an ATM, you don't have to worry about those ATM fees. You will be able to use more than 60,000 “USAA-preferred” ATMs for free. They will also refund you the fees of any ATM that isn't one of the preferred machines.
Low initial deposit. Similar to some of the other accounts, USAA does require an initial deposit, but it's only $25.
No fees. With a USAA savings account, you will not have to may any service fees or any fees if you transfer money to another bank.
If you have a family member that has ever served in the military, it's worth checking out an online savings account with USAA.
8. Synchrony Bank
Synchrony has gotten very competitive in offering the some of the highest interest rates for deposits. They do not offer as many products as many of the other online banks, but they put their focus on what they are good at — vehicles for saving.
Here’s what you get with a Synchrony online savings account:
High interest. Synchrony is dedicated to being competitive on interest rates to attract new clients.
Low minimum. It only requires $30 to open an account and you avoid a $5 monthly fee by maintaining a balance of $30 or higher.
Easy access. Many of the online banks only let you do transfers. Synchrony also has a debit card option to make accessing your cash easier.
No balance dependence. Some banks increase your interest rates the more money you put in. Synchrony gives you the same interest rate no matter how much or how little you put in.
9. Capital One 360 Savings Account
I’ve had an account with Capital One 360 Savings longer than I have with Ally. That’s because Capital One 360 (formerly ING Direct) was one of the first reputable online banks to exist. Capital One 360 is easy to use, secure, and you can connect your account to your other accounts, including your Capital One Investing account.
Here’s what you get with Capital One 360:
Extremely competitive interest rate. The difference in rates between Capital One 360 and other banks is so small most people wouldn’t notice. If you aren’t seeking absolute best interest and are looking at the bigger picture, keep reading.
No minimums. Like Ally, you won’t be hit with any minimum balance fees nor will you have to send a ton of money to open an account. You can open an account with as little as $1.
Easy deposit options. Opening an account is easy — you just link a checking account from another institution like you would with any other bank. Then you transfer your funds over. You can also set up an automatic transfer. This is a great way to save up for your short-term goals. If you know you need to save $1,000 for a trip, you can set up your Capital One 360 Savings Account to withdraw $200 each month from your checking account for the next five months.
Easy access and management. Capital One 360’s user interface is one of the best around. One of the unique things Capital One 360 offers is “sub-accounts” where you can open up mini-accounts to hold your saving goal money. So you can have a main Savings Account, but have mini-accounts for Vacation Fund, Emergency Fund, and so on.
Other account options. You can start with a savings account and grow your finances with ING. They offer a robust set of accounts ranging from checking to savings to CDs, mortgages, and investing.
If you compare Ally and Capital One 360 you won’t find much difference in interest rates. Capital One 360 has been around longer from an online banking standpoint, and they are definitely trustworthy.
10. American Express High-Yield Savings Account
Just like Discover, American Express, the credit card company that offers fantastic cash back now has a banking arm that offers great interest on your account.
Rates are currently very competitive with some of the larger, well known online banks. Account access is not as sophisticated as you see with other banks, but you don’t need that sophistication if you are just looking for a solid place to keep some of your cash. If American Express Savings offered a full suite of financial products like mortgages and checking accounts on top of the savings account and CD, I would be more concerned about the website. But this is a pretty basic product: deposit money, earn interest, watch it grow.
AMEX also has a 36-month CD that you can drop your money into to earn a slightly higher rate of return. However, the difference is so small that I can’t recommend locking your funds up for 3 years. (If you elect to close a CD before its maturity date you pay back 3 months of interest. That’s dumb.)
Here’s what you get with AMEX’s High Yield Savings Account:
Great interest. To attract customers, American Express often has some of the highest interest rates available.
Simple options. You have two account options: high-yield savings and certificate of deposit. Two simple choices rather than an array of confusing options.
No minimums. You don’t have a minimum balance requirement, and you don’t get hit with a fee for letting your balance get too low.
Whichever way you go, you’ll end up with American Express’ renowned customer service to back you up. You probably won’t need it, but it is always nice to know it is there.
11. A New Option: Digit.co
Another interesting savings option is Digit.co. This is a bank that uses an algorithm to determine how much money to transfer from your checking account into savings every few days. By tracking your income and spending habits, Digit.co can determine how much extra money should be going into savings. Digit promises that it’s automatic transfers won’t overdraw your account. The interest paid is very small, but it does exist. This is an account for people who want to save without needing to think about it.
Getting access to your money is easy; it’s all done through text. You text simple commands to change how much you save, to check your balance, and to withdraw to your own account. Most of the time, once you text that you want to withdraw, the money is there in the next day or two. This is a great account for saving up for a night out each month, or for other entertainment.
Consider your savings account needs, and do your research. With the right approach, you can get the most efficient use out of your money.
Why you need a savings account
With so many options for storing your money and the low-interest rates, a lot of my clients ask, “why do I even need a savings account?” and honestly, that's a great question.
The first reason is the obvious one – you get a slightly higher interest rate, and earning a little interest is better than no interest, right? But the interest you earn isn't the only reason to find a good online savings account.
The other reason is a little more obvious, it forces you to save that money. Federal regulations limit the number of times that you can withdraw money from your account. If you can keep taking money out of the account, it's going to encourage you to save. There are hundreds of thousands of places that you can open up a savings accounts, but all of them basically break down to three categories, traditional savings account, online savings account, and kids savings account. Many of these also offer a money market. If the MMA account offers a higher interest rate then we will list that instead of the savings account option.
What to Look for in a Top Savings Account
There’s no need to let your money sit in an account that doesn’t pay any interest at all. That’s one of the worst things you can do with your money because the value of your money will slowly go down due to inflation. You need to generate some interest to combat inflation just to maintain the spending power of the money you have. However, even the highest yield savings account is unlikely to beat inflation.
Then again interest isn’t everything. There are other considerations as well when choosing from among the top savings accounts.
Interest – High Yield
For me, interest comes first. Generating interest helps protect your money from inflation. Even if inflation is really low, getting some small interest on the side will help you bolster your account over time. Interest isn’t the only important factor, but it never hurts to have someone paying you to store your cash with them.
Don’t get too caught up in chasing yields, however. Most of the time, the difference between accounts isn’t enough to prompt you to move your money every time a bank comes out with a newer, higher yield.
Customer Service
Having great customer service is another key aspect of a great savings account. If you earn a little bit more interest at one bank but the customer service is awful you will probably regret it. I like to stick to firms that have solid reputations or that I’ve had previous experience with.
The accounts on this list all offer good customer service and a good user experience.
Access
You want easy access to your funds. If you have to jump through a lot of hoops to pull money out of your emergency fund during an unexpected setback, it defeats the purpose. Other considerations when you look at savings account access:
Do you have to go to a physical branch? Or can you transfer funds online using your smartphone? What about ATM access? Can you withdraw money at ATMs across the country for free, or at least get reimbursed for the fees you do pay? Access can be a tiebreaker when you are comparing two very similar banks.
Understand the Purpose of Your Savings Account
Saving for future purchases and expenses is one of the best things you can do to stabilize your financial situation. Rather than using credit spending (and winding up in debt if you don’t pay off the balance each month), identifying your spending goals and saving up can help you buy the things you want — without ruining your financial future.
You should also understand that keeping an emergency fund available for a rainy day can be a good idea. What happens when the car needs repairs or you need to replace the dryer? An emergency fund can protect you from the need to borrow in order to meet these unexpected expenses.
While a high-yield account would be nice, it’s important to recognize that your savings account isn’t meant to help you build wealth so you can fund your retirement (learn more about investing for retirement through a Roth IRA). Rather than expecting high yields from your savings account, here’s how to think about it:
Liquidity
One of the biggest advantages of a savings account is the liquidity. Because it’s cash, it’s instantly available for you to use. You don’t have to sell shares and what for the proceeds of the sale, or jump through hoops to get your money. It’s available immediately.
This is what makes a savings account ideal for an emergency fund. You know you can get to the money immediately if you need it. The liquidity also makes it great for access your money for a short-term savings goal. You know that you will be able to pay with your savings account when you need to, or you can use the money to instantly pay off your credit card after you’ve used it to book your vacation (and earn the points).
Safety
The other reason to incorporate a savings account into your financial strategy is so that you can keep the money safe. You don’t have to worry about losing your vacation money in the stock market when you keep it in a savings account. You know the money is there when you need it for an emergency with your savings account. Plus, if your account is with a federally insured institution, you don’t have to worry about losing your money if the bank fails.
Stop thinking of your savings account as a place to help you grow your wealth, and instead think of it as a way for you to protect your assets and keep your long-term financial situation from deteriorating due to debt. You can also think of your savings account as a way to help you save for short-term goals. As long as you incorporate a savings strategy along with an investing strategy that allows you to build wealth over time, you should have a balanced approach to your overall financial plan.
Whether you are saving up an emergency fund or just preparing to spend money on a nice vacation next year, you need a great savings account to hold your money. Here are my favorite places to wring as much yield as possible out of your savings account.
Types of savings accounts
There are a few different types of savings accounts, but don't worry, the main idea is still the same.
Bank Savings Accounts
This is the traditional idea of a savings account at a physical bank. You can walk into any local branch of a bank and open up one of these savings accounts. Normally, these accounts have maintenance fees and low-interest rates.
Online Savings Accounts
These accounts work almost identical to a traditional savings account except you manage the whole account strictly online. In most cases online savings accounts offer slightly better interest rates because they have lower overhead costs.
Savings Account for the Kids
Maybe you want to open up a savings account for your kids, that's a very good idea! Some banks have savings accounts specifically designed for kids, but don't' worry, you'll have control over the account. It's a great way to teach your children about managing money.

Albatross
It’ll be seven years this January since I was raped, the first time. Four years in June the second time. One month today since I was released from Havenwyck Psychiatric Hospital.  I finally sunk to the bottom of my well. No one said rock bottom would be like this, that it would be like falling asleep. Slow, gentle, and suddenly so deep and dark; no one said it would be this hard crawling back up either.
There’s much, much more to my story, but I don’t quite know how to translate it yet. For years, friends and family have told me to write a blog, share my story, my pain. Every time I try I feel lost; and for the sake of those who know me, and will know of this blog, I will be changing the names of certain individuals.
So where the fuck do I begin? Do I start with where I’m at now or how I got here? Do I do both? In pieces? A reflection of my fragmented mind? Let’s start with the perfect storm that led to my diagnosis. . .
At the end of July, I had just moved into my first apartment. Ever. Twenty-five years old, and I finally had a space to call mine, in a sense. I knew my depression was getting bad a few months prior, around the time of my birthday, but I ignored it. I slept 11 hours on Saturdays. I barely combed my hair. My cats were lucky if I cleaned the litter box more than three times a month. I had been depressed since I was a teenager and nothing so far had truly helped so I let go of trying. I still took my paxil, but nothing changed.
It wasn’t too long after I moved into my own place that my father needed to have a surgery. Bypass surgery. On his left leg which he hadn’t been able to feel for the last few years due to undiagnosed diabetes. The vascular specialist urged him to go in for surgery immediately. My father is not a perfect man, but he was the perfect man for the job of helping to raise me. He understood me in ways no one else, not even my friends did, because he and I have similar souls. The idea of losing my father, even though the procedure would be routine, immediately caused me anxiety. And to make matters worse, the original procedure couldn’t be done because of complications with my father’s veins and the insurance company’s change of policies, which they conveniently forgot to inform their insurees of.  So the surgery went from being scheduled in early August to early September. My depression and anxiety level stayed the same. I barely ate. I barely slept a full eight hours. I worked forty hours a week.
September 10th: two days before my father’s surgery
I am anxious. I’m bored and lonely. I figure, well, I’ll go to the mall and get some cool knick-knacks and posters for my apartment; or I’ll find a funny t-shirt for my dad that will cheer him up when I see him in the hospital. I stop what I’m doing and just grab my purse and go. Uncombed hair in a bun, hoodie, no deodorant. I did not give a fuck what I looked like. I didn’t care about anything, except my family, but even then, I felt so much it was numbing. I get to the mall and enter through one of the bigger stores, Lord & Taylor. I head up to the second level where the fun stores like Hot Topic and Spencer’s are located.
Almost as soon as I get out into the rest of the open aisle ways, a tall, Middle Eastern man makes eye contact with me. He asks to show me something at a kiosk two or three feet away. I don't know why I didn't just say, fuck off. I don't know why, but I sat down. I’ve always been told that I am too nice for my own good. This isn’t the first time I’ve found it to be prophetic.
Almost immediately this man started calling me "Mufasa”, "honey” and “cute”. While he uses these sexually charged terms of harassment, I grow increasingly uncomfortable. This man, Jovani, proceeds to call me cute again and tells me he wants my number. At this point, I feel trapped and creeped out. "What if this man follows me and rapes me?" I've been raped by someone I thought was my friend, so I can't imagine what a stranger could be capable of. No one, male or female, should ever have to consider this, but I have, and I did. I felt unclean. I felt my rapists all over me again. I felt sick.
Every other time he mentions the product, he tells me I'll get free stuff or I'll get a deal because I am cute. “I really want your phone number, I'm not joking with you, Mona-Monet." He keeps talking about getting my number and starts getting handsy with me, slightly brushing my chest as he tosses my hair forward. I finally give in and agree to buy his product, as he places a blank receipt slip in front of me and says, "phone number" with a creepy smile. I give him my debit card for the hair straightener and two conditioners for $159 dollars. Then, I black out. It's the first time in more than 6 years, that I've blacked out. It's not convenient. It's not fun. It's terrifying. (The psychiatrists think the psychosis began earlier when my PTSD was triggered, but that the break didn’t happen until later.)
Next that I know, I'm walking with two bags, heavy bags, in Spencer's. I don't remember getting all this shit. What the fuck?, I think to myself. “It’s probably all the free stuff he said he was gonna give you. You probably just blacked out for a second or two.” I try to keep my cool.  I don't know what's happened, but I do know I no longer want to be there or anywhere where this man could find me. I leave and head to Wal-Mart for some groceries on my way back home. I stop at the atm inside to check my account. " No balance inquiry," it says. Well, I figured it was a glitch and pay for my stuff with my credit card. I log online to my bank account in the car. 500 dollars, gone. I'm panicking. Why the hell is 500 dollars gone? What the fuck happened? I drive back to the mall and message a friend from work. I'm crying and can barely muster up the courage to go inside and confront his man who sexually harassed me. I breathe in and out slowly until I can move my legs. I can't even make it to the kiosk. I see him and hide behind one of the big ninja turtle posters by the elevator. I see that he's texted me because he says it’s him, Jovani, and I ask if can return all the items in these two bags. He said no "no refunds. Only exchanges." From what I could remember, he never mentioned a no-refund policy. I didn't see it on the receipt I signed. I freak out. I call a friend, crying, almost sobbing. I leave as fast as I can and drop one of the bags in the store I left through. The other bag, I threw away when I got home. I didn't keep the original receipt.
Monday - 9/11 Now 700 dollars is gone from my account. An additional charge from the merchant had been made. I call the bank, they say that can't do anything because technically the charges were on hold and in the meantime call the manufacturer. After explaining the situation, the manufacturer refused to refund my money. The only time I’ve spent more than 500 dollars was for rent and a lease deposit. I wait and hope for the best. I go to bed immediately when I get home, tossing and turning the whole night.
Tuesday - 9/12 day of my father's bypass surgery. Couldn't and didn't sleep through the night, got to work at 7 to start a 10-hour shift (I worked 40 hours by Thursday without taking a lunch to be with my father on Friday the 15th). I do my work anxiously as I wait for the news on my father. I check my bank account during a short morning break; now all my money was gone, almost $1200. I immediately call the bank to get dispute paperwork. I fill out the forms and use the entire back of the sheet to explain what happened. Fax it. Finally, I get news that my father made it through surgery and will have a hard recovery.
For the two days following, I work ten-hour shifts and hear nothing from the bank. I don’t eat dinner. I miss a night of taking my Paxil. I call the bank during my lunch period and a worker tells me they sent a letter and via the account manager my dispute reasoning is "insufficient." I break down in front of my coworkers. They have no idea of how my family has lived pay check to pay check and the burden of private student loans with an 11 percent interest rate. They don’t understand the pressure I’ve felt to be more than myself, to be greatness, to be better. I worked hard for that money, and it was taken. I lost control. I was helpless, like when I was raped.  My brother and friends keep telling me to file a complaint but I don’t consider it until that Saturday. Before I went to the mall to file a complaint I drove 2 hours to see my father in the hospital and offer my mother some much-needed support.
I avoid the entrance I used the last time I went to the mall. I find customer service and tell them a merchant stole my money and I want to file a complaint. I start crying. I can’t seem to stop crying lately. A security officer is immediately called. He takes my statement. I wasn’t much help to him. I'm confused, agitated. I got my dates mixed up and thought it was two days ahead of the 15th. I couldn’t remember the drive to the mall. I couldn’t stop crying or shaking. The security officer is doing the best he can to keep me calm, he takes thorough notes. Novi police come out to the mall. They take my statement again and proceed upstairs to the kiosk. My face hurts from all the tears. My stomach is in knots. 20 minutes pass. The police officers and security guard look angry. Jovani showed them three receipts. He showed them texts on his phone with my number attached. He told them a whole different story. I did not recall three transactions. I did not recall more than the text asking for a refund. I couldn’t fathom what they meant or could be talking about. I had no recollection. After crying and pleading with them to help me, they place me under arrest for filing a false police report. All the while, people stare and take pictures. One of the police officers told me that I was "lucky he wasn't charging me with a felony." As the doctors later explained, this is when I had a psychotic break. I had blackouts before. I had disassociated before while I was being raped. Nothing like these blackouts, so close together happening though. Nothing so terrifying. I remember stepping out of the police car while counting to twelve. Next memory: hands strapped down, lying in a hospital bed, clumps of my hair on the bed beside my right hand. The nurses ask me why I was pulling out my hair. Next memory: waking up in the middle of the night, a different room. Two days later after the immense amount of drugs I was under finally wore off some, I find out from a polite nurse that I have been involuntarily petitioned for a stay (an indeterminate amount of time) at Havenwyck Hospital - a psychiatric hospital. No one knew where I was for three days. I had no one. No phone privileges for two days. No change of clothes. I smelled horrible. I’m still processing my stay at the hospital. All the smells, sights, sounds, feelings. Dr. Tadeo diagnosed me with Bipolar II disorder with OCD tendencies, trichotillomania, and PTSD.
It’s been a month since my six-day stay at Havenwyck. I have a psychiatrist. This psychiatrist does not really believe in PTSD but believes I had Bipolar II, OCD, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I have a therapist as well that I now see once a week. Soon I have another court date to determine the eligibility of probation for the unintentional false police report. And just recently my work put me on a leave of absence because of my poor performance and accidental overdose of Xanax. My albatross only grew heavier at the bottom of the well. . .

Earn 2.30% APR when you open a CIT Savings Builder account and deposit $100 per month…or you can go to Bank of America and earn and earn 0.03% APR.
Now, ideally, you’d do your banking during regular business hours. If you have to use some of these late night banking options, you might pay a fee to do so.
But if “normal” isn’t an option, you’ve got some choices. Here are some places you can go to cash checks 24 hours a day.
5. WinCo Foods
WinCo Foods
is a large grocery chain in the Western United States.

I would recommend setting up an emergency fund or sinking fund. A great way to jump start your starter emergency fund is with a quick side hustle. We have over 80 side hustles you can start here.
Thanks so much for reading and good luck with your check cashing adventure!

I would recommend setting up an emergency fund or sinking fund. A great way to jump start your starter emergency fund is with a quick side hustle. We have over 80 side hustles you can start here.
Thanks so much for reading and good luck with your check cashing adventure!
