the halloween boyfriend of the century. he has so much fun with holiday stuff and dressing up makes it even better

he's the type to take you to fall festivals and engage in the classic fair games, throwing darts, bobbing for apples, even silly haunted houses. you might end up dragging him into a haunted house, lyney won't get too scared... or at least that's what he says, but he holds your hand the whole time.

a solid 9/10 fall boyfriend, definitely gets into all aspects of october and fall as a whole. he gets a little too carried away and might forget about your scary movie date... but it's okay because now you, him, and both of his siblings all have matching costumes!!

what would you think a hallmark-esque fanfic would look like for rosielemmons, and/or Jackharding. I think that both have potential.

Oh, RosieLemmons is big-city lawyer Rosie ends up breaking down driving from the airport to a convention, and tow truck driver and mechanic Ken Lemmons is the one to show up at the side of the road.

Rosie's burned out from working for a big firm, and he was really looking forward to this convention because there were going to be workshops on starting your own firm. He figures he'll get his rental fixed easy enough, and it'll be fine.

But it's the week before the small town festival (Carp Days; Catfish Crawl; something like that), and the whole town basically goes quiet except to get ready for it. Ken promises Rosie he'll have him fixed up in a jiffy, but then it turns out he doesn't have the part he needs, and it's gonna take two days.

Rosie sort of sighs it out and says, "Well, okay, guess I'll get a place to stay."

And Ken has to explain that it's the Gar Jubliee or whatever it's called (I'm not trying to make fun of small town festivals; I grew up with one, and I lived near a place that did Sucker Days, named for the fish. This is all knowing ribbing; I promise). So, no hotel rooms to be found, but hey, his parents have a spare room, just across the hall from his, and his momma works from home, so they've got the manners and the internet connection he needs.

Rosie does his webinars and thinks about what he wants to do with his life as a lawyer, and the third day he's there (the part got delayed by a low-water bridge washing out in a thunderstorm), one of Ken's sisters is over trying to make sense of insurance paperwork because she needs them to pay the accident coverage, but they're saying she went to the wrong hospital. Rosie ends up sorting it out for her, and then neighbors start to show up with similar stuff. It's not that they can't figure it out; it's that Rosie knows the ways the insurance company will try to get out of paying, so he can get it done in about a tenth of the time.

And meanwhile, Gar Jubliee (I've decided that's what it is) is getting set up, and Rosie's really liking everyone he meets, and Ken's just so handsome and so helpful and smart and easy to talk to.

And you see where this goes. Rosie DOES have to go back to New York for awhile to get his affairs in order, but by next Gar Jubliee, Rosenthal, esq. is one of the happiest sponsors for Gar Jubliee.

For JackHarding, it's a little trickier because Rosie and Ken are just so openly affectionate it's easy to find a Hallmark story for them. But JackHarding feels like a classic "Perfectly fine with what I've got until suddenly the literal best man ever walks in" sort of Hallmark story. With Jack being the one fine with his relationship, but then Harding comes in as a consultant or something and at first, they butt heads, but then they end up really liking each other, and meanwhile Jack's trying to get his serious-but-not-quite-longterm boyfriend to agree to just show up to his family's house for one goddamn dinner. And, yes, he knows his family can be a bit stuffy, and yes he knows it's not an ideal Sunday evening thing, but he's asking for him to just suck it up and show up once.

And then on the Sunday the boyfriend finally agrees to show up, he ends up calling with an excuse at the last minute. Jack is actually working with Chick on whatever the project is (hot deadlines and all that) and knows his mother will be very annoyed if he messes up the seating arrangements, so he invites Chick, and Chick says yes. And Jack texts his family to let them know "Hey, my boyfriend had a minor emergency, but I'm bringing along a work friend."

So, like, no confusion from his family that Chick is NOT his boyfriend, but then Jack starts feeling a bit confused because here's this guy he's only known for a few weeks who's showing up to this dinner and doing great but also occasionally muttering smartass remarks about his family's airs under his breath, and Jack's snickering along with him because Chick's 100% right. And, why can Chick do this so easily but Jack's boyfriend was being such a dick about it.

And then, as they leave Jack's family's house, who's walking by just happy as you please definitely NOT dealing with a sprained ankle like he claimed?

Boyfriend.

And Jack is PISSED and just TEARS HIM UP and he shouts, "What's so fucking impossible about doing one goddamn thing for me?"

And the boyfriend snides that the problem is that Jack only asks for shit when it's something annoying but keeps himself closed off otherwise.

And that's when Chick grabs the guy and bodily lifts him into a trash can. And slams down the lid.

Chick takes Jack to bar, and they have a drink, and Jack bemoans that maybe the boyfriend is right. Maybe he's closed off, and Chick refuses to let that stand. Tells Jack that, hey, you're quiet, but you're an open guy. I mean, hell, you invited me to your family's dinner and let me make fun of them a little. Maybe if that asshole had shown he was willing to try, you'd open up to him more. You think about that?

And so on and so forth, they kiss. Final scene is Christmas at Jack's family's house, and he's got a huge smile and Chick's got a huge smile, and they get scolded for giggling as they mutter to each other and refuse to share anything they're saying with the table. Which makes them laugh harder.

Ryu: Barbie. Probably got dragged into it by Sakura. Didn't get most of it but he liked it. Hopes Ken is doing allright ("I too know what it's like to struggle with my worst self") and gifts his Ken a "I am Kenough" shirt.

Ken: Mel wanted to watch Oppenheimer and Ken went along with him. Mel liked it, but Ken got bummed out at the story of a neglectful husband and father trying his best to help people and ruining lives over it.

Chun-Li: Her and Li-Fen went to Barbie in matching outfits. The mother's speech in the middle of the movie really, really resonated with her.

E. Honda: Goes to Barbie screenings painted pink to promote his business. If you even think about suggesting Oppenheimer to him he will slap you and you will deserve it.

Blanka: Barbie. Loved it, a little confused but trying to get the spirit, called up his mom and Sakura later to apologize in case he ever oppressed them or made them feel inadequate. Look out for pink variants of Blanka-chan in stores soon.

Guile: Neither, but his family dragged into Barbie. Spent most of it stone-faced but by the time of the Just Ken musical battle number he did crack up a bit.

Dhalsim: Neither.

Zangief: Went to Barbie with R.Mika. Laughed so loudly during the movie you could hear it outside the room. Launches an all-women wrestling course because he thinks muscle power is the solution to misogyny as it is to everything. Marisa enrolls in for a laugh.

Balrog: Neither. Thinks long movies suck and wouldnt be caught dead attending a girl movie.

Vega: Enjoyed both from a reserved patrician distance, couldnt relate to either of the protagonists in any way. Offended by the existence of Weird Barbie and the scenes with old women in it.

Sagat: Neither. But if one of the kids at his village asked, he would go watch Barbie with them and pretend he had a good time, would heavily criticize Ken for betraying his community in vain pursuits of power.

M. Bison: Barbie, and he likes it, not even for any nefarious reason. Doesn't care to watch Oppenheimer, 3 hours of a guy getting cold feet about doing something that Bison happily does at home for free (murdering scores of innocent civilians).

Cammy: Oppenheimer. Only attended Barbie because the other Dolls asked her to, but she didn't think much of it.

Dee Jay: Barbie, and he had a great time. Plays his own remixes of Just Ken and Dance the Night for several nights at the club afterwards.

Akuma: Neither. If he did, he would quit Oppenheimer in the first minutes, in disgust at Oppenheimer's weakness for trying to murder his teacher with a poisoned apple instead of his bare hands.

Dan: Didn't plan to watch either but people kept seeing him in the street and assuming he was on his way to watch Barbie. After doing so, he tries to aggressively rebrand the Saikyo Dojo as a feminist dreamhouse over the following weeks and fails.

Nash: Oppenheimer. Didn't feel anything other than sadness.

Rose: Doesn't enjoy movies very much, her powers predict the entire plot before it happens, but still went to watch Barbie with Menat and Maggio.

Sodom: Neither, but protests Oppenheimer screenings in defense of Japan and genuine disgust over the movie's subject matter, runs away crying whenever it's pointed out that he's a white jock.

Rolento: Disliked Oppenheimer for the protagonist being a lily-livered coward who couldnt stand by his own choices in defense of the country.

Sakura: Barbie. Had fun, but the parts where Barbie punches a guy and outruns the police and the mother outfoxes the Mattel executives in a car chase is kinda what she wished most of the movie was like, dissappointed only the Kens got to fight.

Gen: Neither. Dead.

Cody: Barbie. Liked it fine, I guess, wasn't boring.

Dudley: Went with Elena to watch Barbie. Found it a smashing good time and felt offended at how rudely the Kens treated the Barbies when they took over.

Necro: Cried during both with Effie. Barbie's crisis over her humanity and her moment at the bench really got to him.

Hugo: Went with Poison to watch Barbie. Enjoyed it more than she did, found himself relating a lot to the tiny violent Allan man who belongs nowhere.

Makoto: Barbie. Didn't like the daughter's character arc one bit and walked out of it hating Barbie as a concept more .

Rufus: Went to Barbie at Candy's insistence and my God you could not get this man to shut up about it for days afterwards. Added feminist to the list of self-aggrandizing adjectives he uses.

Seth: Pre-Doll Zero, he would have watched Oppenheimer and not liked it for it's preoccupation with pathetic human morality. Post-Doll Zero, he would resonate unbelievably hard with Barbie's arc and have a breakdown over the ending.

Juri: Saw both. Spend the entirety of Oppenheimer browsing her phone and making loud bomb/fart noises with her mouth and laughing. Thought Barbie sucked.

Poison: Went with Hugo to watch Barbie and kept planning ways to cash in the pink/Barbie craze for her business. Thought the movie was funny but kinda dumb.

Rashid: Barbie, really really liked it. Pirates the movie before it's out on digital to make a reaction stream and gets sued over it.

F.A.N.G: Oppenheimer. Besides the skin melting scene, dissappointed at how little it showed the scientific process behind building an atomic bomb or civilians dying, he kinda signed up just for those things.

Luke: Liked both, really wants to have his own Mojo Dojo Casa House and, besides the whole oppressing women thing which is totally uncool, doesn't think the Kens were doing anything that wrong.

Jamie: Wanted to watch Barbie but drunkenly wandered into Oppenheimer by mistake and had a really bad time.

Manon: Criticizes Barbie for muddled politics and found Barbie apologizing to Ken at the end viscerally disgusting.

Marisa: Neither. Went to watch Meg 2 because watching action stars fight a giant rampaging shark seemed like more of a good time to her. Thought the first one was a lot better.

JP: Majority shareholder at Mattel stock, politely claps during the screening.

AKI: Has spent the last weeks furiously testing out poisons on various plastics and chasing down Mattel executives for intel. Has a cunning plan to take over Barbieland and gift it to her master.

a persona 3 reload review

uuuuuuh so i was meant to post this like... two weeks ago, but then real life hit me in the head like a frying pan. now that i've had the time to edit this though, here are my thoughts on p3re! this is also a minato route review, as i played kotone's in P3P (i know it's not his canon name, but i don't want to use makoto due to P5 confusion).

on the whole, reload is a fantastic game. the gameplay easily rivals P5R, and surpasses it in some aspects. the new content is typically great. i also enjoyed minato as a character (well, as much of a character as persona protagonists are anyway), though that leads me to the main gripe i had with reload...

... and that's the lack of kotone's social links. to be precise, two of her social links, the absence of which greatly hurts the overall story.

don't get me wrong, i'd still rank reload a solid 8/10, but it could have been a 10/10 with the addition of those two links (plus one other spoiler thing), and I think that's a shame.

my in depth analysis is under the cut - note, it's very much not spoiler free.

okay, so, i'm gonna split this into 3.5 segments - the good, the mixed, and the bad (you'll find out what the 0.5 is later).

1. the good:

minato - while i'm still a kotone girlie at heart, he's not a bad protagonist at all! his dialogue options have a very distinct personality to them unlike joker and yu, and his character arc is one of the best of all of the persona main leads. an aloof, apathetic boy who learns to love the world/his friends so much he's willing to die for them... it's good!

koromaru - minor, but worth mentioning. you can pat him, and it's so cute. in fact, everything about him is perfect. from his all-out attack screen, to his animations, to... well, everything. no joke, if I needed to sell this game to a non-persona fan, i'd use him as the main draw.

hangout events - while I think being able to chat to everyone in the dorm already made SEES one of the more developed casts, having additional scenes really helped flesh out the party members who are less prominent in the plot (fuuka, pre-january aigis, ken). more things to do at night is also great, given there was nothing to do in the evening after maxing your social stats in the older versions. the perks they give you are great too, but i'll talk about that more later.

voice acting - not gonna lie, i generally don't like the persona dubs, and normally always play with the JP audio. given reload features some of my favourite voice actors though and was basically fully voiced, i decided to give it a chance this time. and i don't regret it! while some actors are definitely stronger than others, none of them were actively jarring, and quite frankly, they hard carried a lot of the social links. kudos to the cast!

strega - while they could have gone a bit further with it (jin needed a linked episode for sure), takaya finally got the development he sorely needed, and his and jin's final battles were actually interesting, instead of being annoying distractions from nyx. in fact, i'd say takaya's new content is easily the best of the new reload exclusive material. in portable, he made no impression on me whatsoever, but now, he finally gets to be the anti!minato he deserves to be.

1.5. the tartarus (aka good part 2, electric boogaloo):

i have so many things to gush about in terms of the new combat/exploration system, i decided it needed its own section! the glow-up tartarus got was massive. i was pretty disappointed when i heard they were keeping it randomly generated, but somehow, atlus pulled it off! i'll talk about individual things below.

collectables/monad doors - one issue with OG tartarus is that it's monotonous. breakable collectables make it much more entertaining to romp through though, as smashing things is Fun. the monad doors interspersed throughout are another good addition - if you want a break from roaming, you can challenge them, but if not, that's fine!

floor layout - another thing that makes tartatus more fresh to explore is that the HD graphics really make the differences between the blocks pop out. the generally smaller floors with more unique layouts really helps too.

shifting - it's baton pass, though without the ridiculous power/sp bonuses that made baton pass a little bit too gamebreaking in persona 5. in other words, perfect!

theurgy - out of all the battle-specific improvements, theurgy and the personality traits have got to be my favourites. showtimes were fun, but too random/gimmicky to be that useful, and ultimate skills tended to fluctuate between being absolutely gamebreaking or too SP intensive to be worth using. blending them into one feature with a content-specific gauge fixes all the problems with them while keeping everything that made showtimes/ultimate skills good.

ambush mechanics - this was one of the things i was most worried about before playing reload. ambushing in P5 is fun, but ambushing in the other persona games...? not so much. reload manages to fix this though by making the shadows less sensitive, which makes the early game a lot better, and but introducing dash-ambushes once the floors get bigger. if the persona 6 ambush system works like this, i'll be happy.

navigator skills - fuuka being retooled to work more like a playable character was an A+++ decision. making her skills player-activated but with an SP cost is so much more immersive than randomly getting a stat boost/enemy info.

unfortunately, while i think most of the tartarus additions were great, there were a few new mechanics which weren't... dreadful, per say, but could have been implemented better.

great clocks - they're better than nothing, but quite frankly, i would have preferred it if benched units got 50% exp instead. they incentivise you to drop two units for a period of time, which is annoying, given i want to use everyone on my first playthrough. late game, great clocks are also a pain to summon, for reasons i'll talk about below.

twilight fragments - i think they're a neat idea in theory, but they need to be easier/more reliable to farm. once you finish off the bulk of your social links/elizabeth's requests, replenishing them becomes a nightmare, which is annoying because you need them for great clocks.

2. the mixed:

while reload did a lot of things right, as per above, there were some things that didn't quite hit the mark.

linked episodes - i'm gonna be blunt. anyone who thinks these are better than social links is smoking something. one thing i like about party member social links is that it gives them a subplot outside of the main story, focusing more on their mundane struggles as opposed to their supernatural ones. half of the linked episodes just develop the main plot more though (and really should have just been included in it), meaning the linked episode exclusive subplots are underbaked.

another problem is that some of the linked episodes are just... kinda badly written. ryoji's completely lacks his existential dread, akihiko's comes off as a poor attempt to make his arena behaviour less OOC, while shinjiro's... it feels like persona 5 writing, in the worst way possible. it's like atlus completely forgot that subtext is a thing that's Good, actually.

while I have been fairly critical of them so far though, there are a couple of linked episodes i liked. koromaru's actually worked with the format, given he's a dog, but the real winner here was takaya. i loved all of his. if linked episodes appear again, i'd rather they be locked to antagonists like him.

art direction- i'll say right now - the UI is fabulous, the model shaders are great, and tartarus looks fantastic. the environmental design on the whole though is a bit iffy - a lot of the environments didn't translate to the super HD very well, and the lighting sucks in general. i needed to turn down the brightness it was so eye-searing. the animation of the 2D cutscenes is also pretty mediocre, and while the 3D cutscenes tend to look better, they're held back by some of the character models looking a bit goofy (mitsuru's is probably the biggest offender). i also think they were too scared of making the sprites 'ugly', and therefore on the whole they're slightly less emotive than the ones in the older versions of the game, which is a pity.

3. the bad:

minato's social links - the vast majority of the minato-exclusive social links are just flat-out not great. serious props to the voice actors here, since they hard carried them. quite frankly, they're just... bland, except for maya's and suemitsu's, which. uh. have problems. on the topic of social links, while i'm happy the romance isn't mandatory anymore, i don't like how half the girls explicitly confess to you. i much prefer the more subtle vibes of the P5/P4 romantic options, as yeah, most of them can lead naturally into romance, but they don't make the MC feel like a harem anime protagonist (derogatory). it kinda brings to mind this twitter post; sometimes, subtlety is simply better.

the absence of shinji and ryoji's social links - i can live without saori, rio, and most of the new and improved SEES member social links, but this is where i draw the line. while shinji dying is better storytelling, just like with chidori, having the option to save him is also important. lock it behind new game plus, yes... but keep it. also, him priming kotone to support akihiko one he's gone is far better than him just flat-out telling minato that he's dying. ryoji's missing social link though is infinitely worse. where is his slowly mounting horror as he starts poking holes in his backstory? his desperation to validate that he's actually real? that he exists?! like yeah, it's nice that the linked episode doubled down on his bisexuality, but i'd rather keep the psychological breakdown aspects of it, y'know?

the difficulty - i started playing reload normal - the level i'd typically use for a blind run of a persona game - aaaaand swapped to hard the second i unlocked theurgy. even then though, the game was a cakewalk until january hit. while i love theurgy, the game is absolutely not scaled around it, especially since you can charge/concentrate them. doing that, you can easily rack up thousands of damage without even going ham with fusion. unfortunately, reload is just... really easy.

the plot's too faithful to the original - while reload added new content, it pretty much left the story untouched outside of the beach scene. that's... not good, as persona 3's narrative had some pretty big problems. the biggest issue is the unchanged pacing - the strega storyline really needed to start a month earlier, and ryoji needed an extra month to integrate with the characters due to his lack of social link. this is one of the things i'm explicitly docking a point for - reload still doesn't kick off until the yakushima arc, which is well over a third into the game.

despite my criticisms, i do want to note that my experience with reload was predominately positive. it's (extremely) sad that you still need to play portable to experience the full persona 3 story, but p3re is still a fantastic game, and has a lot of gameplay features i'd be delighted to see in persona 6.

so this rewatch made me feel soooo many more things than this show usually does. because swedish. i love these boys sm and they came so much closer than they usually do because of subtitles in my mother tongue

every of bucky's gay lines to buck? in swedish? screams into a pillow i love them so much

also fun to think of the swedish equivalent to all the references to places in the us the characters refer to

bucky's way to change between his personal self (that is partially a performance though) and his leader role. when he starts barking orders 👉👈🥺🫣 im on my knees and so is buck . he can be a good dom and he'll ask buck if he can knock him up because with buck by his side he wouldnt mind having kids. anyway

goes insane about curtbuckybuck btw. it's like buck knows bucky loves him and wants him, he's too repressed to accept his queerness, so bucky finds curt. the two of them love each other, but curt isn't buck, though he's the best bucky can find. and buck and curt respect and care for each other, despite both of them know that bucky is with curt because he can't have buck (though, if he could he would have them both). and buck knows he can't give bucky what he wants, so he has to keep curt alive for bucky's sake, even though it means he partially loses bucky to someone else. but that's how it has to be, he can't. be queer.

and that's another reason why episode two where the buckies work together to make sure curt doesn't get shot down is so good

ALSO the relationship between pilot and co-pilot. pilot and bombardier. trusting another man with your ship. homoeroticism much!!!!

the superstition is. insane actually, i'm obsessed with it.

Mojo Dojo Casa House (for the fic ask) 😊

My favorite scene

Probably the bit at the very beginning, when they go through Johnny's list of potential dojo names. Writing banter for Johnny and Daniel is one of my favorite things to do, and that scene was especially fun, and easy to write.

My favorite chapter (if it's a multichapter)

Well, there's only two to chose from, lol. And they're less chapters than two halves of one whole. I dunno, I love both parts equally, I can't choose.

Hardest scene to write

Probably the scene in middle of Ch. 1, where Johnny suggests again that they just call themselves Miyagi-Do, and explains what Mr. Miyagi means to him. It's the big, emotional moment the whole fic sort of hinges on, and it took me awhile to nail the right tone.

That, and the scene right after it, when he awkwardly tries to explain how he feels like the Ken to Daniel's Barbie. Scenes like that, where Johnny has to talk about his feelings, are always a challenge to write.

Favorite character to write in the fic

I mean, it's gotta be Johnny. He gets all the best lines. Writing his dialogue is always a fun challenge, because I have to walk a very fine line. Lean too far into the "dumb blond" moments, you start to stray into caricature. Get too introspective or self-serious, he no longer feels like Johnny. So it's a delicate balancing act, but one I really enjoy.

Favorite dynamic to write in the fic

The story is pretty much all Johnny and Daniel, so I guess it has to be them by default. Though I did really enjoy writing the little moments between Johnny and Robby.

Why I chose that title

Because the moment I heard the words "Mojo Dojo Casa House" leave Ryan Gosling's mouth, I knew I was gonna write a fic about it. I think I said it in my author's notes, but it's the most Johnny Lawrence line I ever heard that wasn't delivered by Zabka.

It didn't help that Ken has the headband on in that scene.

A fun fact about the fic

I had to go back and see 'Barbie' a second time, because I spent the entire last half of my first viewing totally spaced out, brainstorming that fic. It was basically fully formed in my brain before I ever left the theater. I literally came home and started writing it right away.

Also, there's this little moment in the fic:

“Oh my god.” Daniel let his head fall to the desk with a theatrical thump. “Yes, we can bone in the Dream House. And in the Barbie camper van, and in the Ferrari…”

“Wait, Barbie had a Ferrari? Badass. Why was I wasting my time playing with GI Joes?”

Yes, Barbie did have a Ferrari, and I know because I still have mine. 😂 So that little bit of my childhood wormed it's way into the fic.

Ngl I always thought the discourse surrounding Ascended!Astarion was pretty boring. It's really a choice between encouraging his worst or his best instincts. Maybe him not being my favorite companion doesn't help (he's like. 3rd or 4th depending on my mood lol) and it's clear having him ascend is the Evil Option(tm), but also, sometimes I look at the discourse and just go: "Yeah. That dude is made of pixels whether you ascend him or have him stay a spawn. He can't hurt you. He's not real."

That's where I am, like. I was intrigued by Astarion in EA because I am, first and foremost, a vampirefucker and a villainfucker, then got annoyed with him in the full game, decided he wasn't for me, got bored, and jumped onto Devil Daddy and never looked back. I don't really care about him -- his arc is probably the best handled of any of the companions', but I don't really *care*. I remember there being some speculation in EA that there *wouldn't* be a Good Option, so I was surprised and happy that happened, then I got weary of the discourse and one side trying to prove that you're the actual devil if you support one ending over another, not helped by the fact that his story obviously appeals to abuse survivors who have a very personal stake in him + his arc and therefore tend to feel strongly about one ending VS another. (I have killed Astarion off in no fewer than two playthroughs, had sex with him in one, and am romancing him in another.)

Like, yes, Ascended is evil, yes, he's intended to be toxic and abusive, no, I don't really care, yes, it's fine to headcanon your Tav is in some kind of genuinely loving relationship with him (I'm a *Raphael* fan, I have no ground to stand on as far as "unrealistically affectionate morally black characters"), it literally doesn't matter, no the game isn't REALLY as smart as it thinks it is for only really "subverting expectations" with romances that primarily appeal to straight women (when straight men have had the lion's share of video game romances designed for them for DECADES), but it isn't worth the degree of discourse it gets either and I hear more bitching about A!A fans than I do actual A!A content. You're not traumatizing real abuse survivors by ascending him, keeping him as a Spawn, having sex with him, or staking him at your earliest opportunity, he's pixels. He's a fun little Ken doll that you can dress up in shiny armor and take with you on fun adventures and then put him in clown makeup when he says something racist or that furthers the cycle of abuse. The discourse gets very repetitive very quickly, with both sides repeating the same points ad nauseam, especially a year post-release, and I'd rather spend time talking about Devil Daddy or Drow Mommy. I even get tired of talking about how tired I am of Astarion, because there are other parts of the game I'm much more interested in with characters I'm much more invested in, and talking about how tired I am of him is still talking about him (not @ you, of course, since I obviously answered this and have a bit to say, just at the general way that Astarion still dominates fandom conversations even when they're negative).

I know you like to spread positivity about all kinds of ships but I still wanted to ask if there are any digimon ships you really hate? Not meaning to be negative about it just curious.

Oh, that reminds me of that post I reblogged about how people can't openly "dislike" things on the internet anymore... And I would also maintain that I don't actually "hate" any ship, but that there are some dynamics that are simply not for me, whether it's the canon depiction or the fandom portrayal. I still enjoy playing my ship dynamics game, because it allows me to dive deeper into certain (potential) relationships. And I still think everyone should be able to ship whatever they like and lighthearted banter is also completely fine, as long as they don't harass others, vandalize art, write hatefic, start ship wars and so on. Believe me, I have seen people lose interest in fandom and pull back completely because of petty ship wars and it's just sad.

That being said, there might be a few dynamics I tend to avoid romantically, even if I enjoy most of these platonically (or at least in very specific contexts):

Taichi/Yamato: I recently wrote a huge analysis on how I perceive them and why I think they're rather tragic. I guess my inner child has always been kinda annoyed by their trope-y over-exposure ever since I had access to the internet and I simply am not enjoying "rival" ships (even though they still aren't even classic rivals in my book). Doujin portrayals are filled with angst or mainly physicality too and I don't like how those artists usually ignore that these two have OTHER PEOPLE in their lives too, which, again, makes it really tragic and sad and I really want them to HEAL for once, so... No, they're not for me.

Koushirou/Mimi: The fun part about them is that I actually liked them as a ship when I was a kid. And once again, I pointed out a lot of their good qualities before - but Tri really summarized everything I don't enjoy about their portrayal (and that doesn't even include certain fandom corners yet that go way too hard with their kinks on them, which make me just... Uncomfortable. The same/related corners also can make me have issues with very specific Taichi/Mimi fandom portrayals, but I will not go into further detail here, because it's just cruel). I absolutely adore them as friends, but there are just way too many things that make me believe they'd struggle to be compatible romantically with each other long-term.

Yamato/Mimi: I get that they are very popular in various fandom corners and I maintain, ship and let ship! As for me personally, I simply do not see them being compatible, mainly due to their lack of (positive) interactions, even though I did try to outline their potential before.

Yamato/Sora: Disclaimer, I do NOT hate them - in fact, I will probably always be one of those who will defend their parallels to one another AND them being mirrors to Taishirou (and in a lot of my AUs, you will find them as complementary ship to them after all). However... I mainly like their potential. What I don't like is their canon portrayal, because it simply doesn't give me enough to see them in a romantic context, especially long-term. Short term? Heck yeah, why not? But everything beyond that... We all know what I am referring to here, ahem. There was art out there that said they were each other's "comphet phase" and I will never get that out of my head. I also maintain that they both may just want Taichi. Which makes it even more tragic.

Daisuke/Hikari: Again, disclaimer, I think fandom tends to portray them rather nicely and I do believe they have a lot of potential. And I don't hate them, I am just annoyed with how they tend to be depicted in canon, because it feels like an unnecessarily cruel running gag that doesn't let either of them shine in their best light.

Edit: Small shout-out to Ken/Miyako and I know it's cheap to dump on the canon ships like that, but I still feel like it's very one-sided in its portrayal (even if The Beginning made a bit progress in that regard, but I still feel like they should go poly with Daisuke, period). Again, don't hate it, just wish it was more visible.

3. Post a screenshot and ramble on about why this one frame visually appeals to you (colors, blocking, expression, set decoration whatever).

omg this question is so hard. It could be random, like pick the last movie, take a screen, write. But I ended up clicking through dozens of films, watching a lot of fav moments. From Firth & Moore on the carpet in A Single Man, to Ken Watanabe standing in front of Godzilla in G:KotM, then the whole ending to Midsommar, had a quick cry about seeing the hanging shoes in Jojo Rabbit, looked at the way Amy returns in Gone Girl, that shot through the bars in Hustlers, or all the gorgeous bizarre shots that make up Annihilation, also I went through the whole of Fox' X-Men franchise, because I have so many moments I cherish (it is the best superhero franchise as a whole, even though the parts alone are mostly just mediocre, the sum of it is amazing)... then I was downstairs for a snack and a tv spot reminded me that Cruella exists, so I cave with this one:

You hear the name Cruella and what do you think about? Dalmatians and a black&white theme. With the fur she wants and the hair she has. And then this movie gives us a theme party. And it is very, very important that everything is strictly black and white only. It's a whole thing. Except Cruella has a plan and she's gonna be a distraction. She is disruption. She will make everybody look. With the color red. And I am here for it!

This moment was in all the trailers, you know it's coming. Yet while watching I'm always excited nearing this fabulous entrance. And it's not the effect of how she gets rid of her white coat with the flame, it's the absolute contrast to everything around her. Perfectly framed in... a door frame. An entrance for the ages. Introducing herself. Introducing the alter ego. The different persona. I am so here for that.

The whole film is about style. The visuals are gorgeous, the music filling the rest of the mood. This is what movies are for! Colored pictures in motion with sound - to invoke feelings. And here you know something big is happening. There is a stage set. It's all planned. In-story for the characters and for the viewers watching the screen.

There is nothing new or super groundbreaking. It's all about using well known tools in an effective way. And it tells us something about the character. Ella is used to being in the background, while dreaming about fashion she tries hard to not stand out (that would interfere with her little criminal endeavours and get unwanted attention for sure). But this is the birth of Cruella on the scene. Bold. Loud. Drawing all eyes on her. (And also startling people, because being a bit scary is fine.)

*chef's kiss* Sometimes a little bit of flair is all I need. Not even attached to any emotional outburst. Can we just applaud films for using the full spectrum of the medium for its own sake every once in a while, just to entertain?!

5. A character who deserves their own spin-off.

The very obvious, tumblr-friendly answer: Riley Johnson (Aubrey Plaza) from Happiest Season. Show me her life, show me she's good at her work and give me some fun disaster dates she goes on, trying to find somebody a bit more longterm. Witty, forgiving, a bit guarded and then opening up in a non tragic way. Hmm, sadly that's it. I don't even have fancasts for a row dates or anything. Just give me romcom fun with a dash of that specific Plaza-charme. (Not against reuniting her with Rachel Keller from Legion.)

11. A trope or setting you know is mishandled a lot and carries a huge problematic/toxic burden, yet you do enjoy it?

I am highly aware how terrible representation and portrayal of anything mental health/illness related films (and tv) overall are. Especially how most people are not knife wielding dangers to the general public. I am very much about treating people with dignity and respect, not judging but helping. I have seen/experienced things, I know reality.

However horror (next to sci-fi) is my fav genre. And you give me a movie that starts with "in a mental asylum", I'm in. Be it A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 with teens thrown in a hospital (despite telling the truth and not self-harming) or Grave Encounters with supernatural shenanigans in a former bad place. I love M. Night Shyamalan's Split, because James McAvoy plays all those personalities so well. Nobody ever should think about that film when talking about actual disassociative identity disorder!

We need to have that conversation about demonizing mental illness. But yes, here I sit being audience for horror films using it as a gimmick (always glad when it leans into supernatural territory).

I am also absolutely the audience for films like Girl, Interrupted or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Both dvds are on the shelf. Great films. But sometimes I just want John Carpenter's The Ward or plain old Psycho. A film like The Babadook working with metaphors for deep dark soul dives isn't exactly an easy watch, so I'll take some "criminally insane" slashers as well.

in which i ramble about the Barbie movie (or mostly everything surrounding it)

i am very fond of the Barbie movie (just saw it in the theater for the third time) but not for its feminist messaging (which is fine but imo very baby's first feminism 101 and a conversation that was over decades ago. i'm not surprised it's blowing the minds of gen x moms but if you lived through 2010s pop feminism it has nothing more to give you. also i belong to a subset of largely-lesbian women who are a bit removed from this shared sisterhood thing the movie is going for. i don't doubt their problems are real, but they just aren't a problem for me in the same way. i have some different woman-problems that are a bit outside the scope of this movie. Weird Barbie is the closest thing).

literally everything else about it is more interesting to me. the humor (both verbal and physical), the impeccable cast, the direction, the costumes, the killer soundtrack (i hope "what was i made for" wins the oscar. "i'm just Ken" is very funny in-context but not an actually good song), the much-less-discussed existentialist themes and what it means to be human. also very simple and less set up but far more emotionally resonant as far as the film making is concerned. Barbie's last walk with Ruth gets me every time ;_;

but actually the meta-factors of this movie are probably what so endear it to me. i first saw it in Leipzig, in the German dub, with my best friend and it was the wildest moviegoing experience i have ever had. i think that night is in the top handful of fun times i have had in my life. it was such an ordeal that it has been a part of our already-years-long friendship ever since. at that time i had just been asked out for the first time by gf, right before i left the country, and so was also in a whirlwind of excitement about her and anticipation for what might happen when i got back. the second time i saw it in theaters, back home, with my best friend again, was right after my next fateful meeting with gf (who was only then my gf) and we got a coffee right after and i gushed about it all. that was the last movie i saw in the theater near me, before they closed it. i didn't know it was gonna be the last time. best friend and i had so many good times there.

and then the last time, with best friend again, and now with her bf too. both of us all these years were afraid we'd never find love and then we found it for the first time within a few months of each other (it was her fourth time seeing it in the theater. the third time was with her now-bf). the Barbie movie, i'm sure, has nothing to do with this, but was lucky enough to be in the backdrop of it all. as a cultural phenomenon it just happened to fall in one of the happiest years of my life, was huge not just for me and my friends, but at pride, among my students at the time (a group i was especially fond of and perhaps the closest to), my colleagues and my advisor (we both had Barbie-movie-themed t-shirts). every time i see something from it, i am reminded of all this. idk man

thoughts on the good and bad of barbie movie (all spoilers):

i think i would have really liked barbie movie when i was 13 and just realizing/learning what patriarchy was. the marketing definitely gave the wrong impression that this was a more adult-level (ie. sophisticated) exploration than it turned out to be, but that’s ultimately fine. i’m happy for the 13 year olds who will see this movie

i think hollywood needs to remember the importance of character motivations again. ken was the most motivated character in the movie, and because of that delivers the only emotionally resonate line from a character perspective (“i only exist in the warmth of your gaze”). i appreciated ken in this movie, but his arc and dip into patriarchy was so disconnected from how sexism/toxic masculinity operates as a structure IRL i’m not sure what commentary it was attempting to convey. that said, ken was the best part of the movie and his battle with rival ken was brilliant

stereotypical barbie is strangely unmotivated by anything but the status quo for the majority of the film, but runs away from executives at the mid-way point because….? (what was the issue with the box, other than the symbolism we can infer, given she was all fine with returning to the status quo and there is no indication the box *wasnt* that?) then she suddenly develops a desire to be human the the end because….? (one montage at the middle and end does not a character arc make, especially when both montages gloss over the actual blood and teeth of being human).

unlike ken, who was given rather rich characterization and inner conflict, stereotypical barbie remains a bit of a blank slate. she wants to be a pretty, perfect barbie…until she doesn’t? there’s no reason to think barbie was a role she felt forced to play. she spent the whole movie trying to reclaim her old life. the real world is given minimal depth outside two brief montages, so why does barbie want to be a ‘real woman?’

this is more a ‘me’ thing but — clearly i know more about ruth handler than this movie wants me to, so it was weird to see her lionized

the best moment in the movie was when barbie looked at the older woman and called her beautiful. that scene alone justified a lot of the movie for me

the set design of barbieland and kendom was incredible. any part of the movie set in that location was a ton of fun just from a pure visual standpoint

the human mother character is written in a way that would get the script a big “show, don’t tell” note written on the margins during peer-review. and the feminist speech given to barbie near the climax is so girlboss i don’t even know where to start (if the oppression women are facing in this world is merely double-standards and fear of being judged while existing as a normal person/person trying to ‘have it all,’ then their world seems to be doing pretty ok?)

since i think this movie is mostly for 13-14 year olds, i don’t think they needed to portray the violent underbelly of the patriarchy— the nods towards sexual harassment were sufficient. but given even that level of violence wasn’t really grappled with during the feminist speech at the climax, i’m again questioning what this movie is attempting to say about IRL patriarchal structures. the kens sexualize barbie during their brief takeover, sure, but given they are sexless the underlying criticism of objectification seems muddled. again, character motivations are a weakness in this film

the human daughter has a random change in motivation right before the climax of the movie, and it was the scene i realized the movie was not prepared to engage any substantive criticism of barbie as a cultural symbol (i mean, the only criticism it does engage is fairly toothless and from the mouth of a literal teenager, so idk what i was expecting tbh). this is a commercial after all, but it was jarring and took me out of the film for a moment

anyone who says this film lands solid shots at the execs (or even fires any anti-capitalist shots at all tbh) is kidding themselves, sorry. exces are ultimately portrayed sympathetically and support the re-establishment of the barbieland matriarchy, even tho the kendom is making excellent profits for them regardless. it’s gentle ribbing at worst

i’m very mixed on the ending scene of the film. sending barbie to the gyno seems like a very cis-sexist choice to me: the affirmation that she is now a “real woman” is the confirmation that she now has a vagina. i’m open to other interpretations, but i’m really bothered by this ending

despite my criticism of them, i did find the exces to be fun comedy characters. the scene where the chase barbie through the cubicles was great. anytime the movie dipped into cartoon-comedy, i was having fun

i was irritated that werid barbie got an off-screen makeover in the climax to look a little more attractive in an off-beat kinda way. undermines the feminist speech the mom character gave a lil bit, to make the one “ugly” (it’s still kate mckinnon) barbie be a little more polished before she was accepted back into the fold

the treatment of midge was also irritating. the human mother suggests a working-mom barbie/ordinary barbie at one point and i’m like….that’s midge. pregnant woman midge who is treated as ‘frumpy’ and ‘not as special’ is ordinary barbie. why does everyone dismiss her, if she’s the kind of woman we’re supposed to valorize irl?

allan was fun. i liked allan. allan should have gotten to go the the real world

while i do think some parts of the movie were over-hyped and therefore some of my frustrations are bc i set my expectations too high, i must say the performances were spot-on all around. every single ken WAS ken. every single barbie WAS barbie. top-notch cast

overall i give the movie a 6.5/10 (i would say 7/10 if not for the gyno scene). i don’t think i want to watch it again in theaters, but i will be curious to watch it with my bro sometime

!! here's my take on a relationship with mikey, what I think his type is, what he wants in a relationship/what he needs imo and overall how he'd be in one. take it as you please, either a small analysis of his character or headcanons (｡-ω-)

I feel like mikey can catch strong feelings towards someone only after a certain period of time. platonic feelings and romantic feelings are two separate things, and I think he'd have a hard time distinguishing which ones which and what he feels. he'd confuse the platonic ones and romantic ones and just think you're a very good friend to him. I dont feel like he'd ever think about his romantic feelings that much, and even if he did he'd try to hide them (let's face it he's a teenage boy I'm sure he knows what falling in love feels like, he just doesn't know how to differentiate the feeling from a platonic one), only really acknowledging them if someone else pointed them out for him (for exemple things he does or say for/to his crush). that's why I think the "childhood friends to lovers" trope is the best one for him, or at least a friend he's been knowing for a very long time, so he can actually understand his feelings.

"sharing his popsicle with his friend after a long hot day at school wasn't something out of ordinary. summer was approaching rapidly and the weather was showing it, growing hotter and hotter as the day went by, making cold sweat beads on your forehead as you tried to make some air with a book you had in your school bag. you had some time in your hands after school ended and before your english private lessons started, so you choose to hang out with mikey and draken, to mikey's displeasure. he always loved draken and [name]'s company, that's why he pleaded for the blonde to accompany him when visiting the girl, but something in him screamed to make draken leave. he didn't know why. maybe the way the taller one was digging holes in his back everytime he talked with her, or the way draken made his presence known at the worst possible times ever coughing like a grandpa or starting weird conversations about the ice cream he was eating. either way he wanted him gone now. he can go to emma, or something.. right?

"ehh, mikey, you're eating all the ice cream! leave some for me too..," [name] said as she took the sweet treat they were sharing from the blonde's hands. "but you ate your part like five minutes ago.., ugh, you know what? fine. eat it all. ken-chin can go buy me another one, right?", hearing his nickname, draken sighed as he shook his head. something's happening..

as time went on with bickering, laughs and jokes emanating mainly from mikey and [name] (seriously, draken didn't even want to be there), the sun was starting to set, which meant their fun time had to come to an end and her lessons to a start.

after hugging you tight, he looked at you waving in the distance as you tried catching the next bus. he felt a strong gaze on the side of his face, and as he turned his head he met his friend already staring at him with furrowed brows.

"do you like her?", draken asked with a sigh.

"who?"

"don't play dumb with me now."

"no I don't? what's with the question all of a sudden?"

"what do you mean 'no, you don't'?", he spat, mimicking the quotation marks in the air as he walked alongside mikey to his house. "you made me go with you to her school on a friday afternoon, ignored me half of that time and even hugged her when you met and before she left."

"pshh, that doesn't mean anything, ken-chin! she's just a really good friend," mikey shook his head, still chewing at the wooden stick his popsicle came with.

"mikey, you shared your ice cream with her. I think this is more than a friendship if you ask me."

mikey didn't respond, opting to sulk over his friend's words all night and the next day. maybe he's right? nah, can't be.."

his type can vary, all I know is for sure he just wants someone who can handle him. face and body don't really matter to him, as long as they have a cute face for him that's enough. I think for him it matters more how they act, if they can help him get better from his dark impulses and overall be there for him. this is more a headcanon than analysis but I like to think he'd date to marry, or at least he'd want that if he wasn't so busy with gang stuff.

I also think he'd want someone who can relate to him, but to an extent. he will feel uncomfortable if his lover would have the exact same problems because he's not good at comforting (that doesnt mean he wouldn't try to cheer you up tho), but someone who can relate to him can make mikey feel a bit relieved and not so alone. he'd have a hard time opening up too, so having an old friend as a lover will make him feel more comfortable. his lover will automatically be his bsf too!

he's a clingy boyfriend. let's be serious, we all have seen how he is with draken, now imagine that a 100% worse. he'd demand to be everywhere with you, at your house, at his house, park, school, class, you name it, he's with you. nothing new if you skip classes just to hang out with him, and if you don't, he'd whine about it like a child. sleepovers are a must in your relationship, but they mostly happen at his house; I like to think he can't have a good night's sleep anywhere else except his own bed, and you in his arms too? best sleep he's had in YEARS!

""mikey, move! I have to go home, it's late," you whined as you tried to move the blonde's arms away from your body. you've been trying for about an hour and got no progress. it was as if he was glued to your side. it was kind of cute, if you thought about it; he looked like a koala, holding on for dear life on a tree. but you liked koalas when you weren't the tree itself..

you went to sleep late because he wanted to finish the last season of 'the simpsons', and you couldn't go to sleep first because he liked to keep his TV on high volume. goddammit, mikey..

from what you can see from the clock on his wall it was around eleven am. you didn't have a curfew per say, you just didn't want to bother the sano's anymore with your presence; the way you screamed last night to old cringey songs with your boyfriend was probably enough for his grandpa. and besides, you wanted to study for the upcoming exams, it was a sunday after all and you dont get the heart to slack off.

"come on, mikey. wake up!" you tried to shake him off once again, but he didn't even budge.

you knew he was awake already, though. the way his eyes fluttered as he moved his irises and the corners of his mouth trembled to contain the smile that was creeping up on them gave it away. "mikey!", that's the only thing you got to say before he poked your sides, making you giggle in the progress.

"you sure are very talkative in the morning now, aren't you. yapping my ear off and I didn't even get to wake up properly," the blonde yawned, making himself comfortable on your form.

"kiss me good morning so I won't be upset all day that you're leaving so early!" he demanded, making you chuckle.

"no. your breath stinks! go brush your teeth, mikey!""

even if he acts like a kid, deep down he knows it's not safe for you to take part in his gang life, he thinks it's dangerous. he'll try and teach you some moves, just so you can defend yourself when he's not around (which is like never cause he's literally glued to your side but wtvr manjiro ( ´-｀)). if you know how to fight tho, I think that's a whole new story, more or less. he'd still worry about your safety, but wouldnt mind you getting involved.

mikey would also have a hard time opening up. don't expect him to be comfortable to show any emotions to you when you first meet him or when you guys start dating. sure he'll be always happy around you, sometimes grumpy, angry, but I feel like he'll show his "weakness" much more later, when he feels more comfortable around you and when he makes sure you won't leave him after that.

I also like to think he has the same weakness as his brother to the ladies. like let's face it, getting rejected 10 times and still going for 20.. this is what I call weakness, and since shinichiro practically raised manjiro I think he rubbed off on his little brother. the thing is, since shin is mikey's one and only exemple, I don't think he'll actually act up on it and get rejected like his big bro (I feel like he's scared of rejection and seeing his brother get it every single time it made him precautions on things like these (／。＼)).
