i think its kinda stupid to be mad at gifmakers for gifing pjo and those who rb it. is everyone just expected to do research on every single person involved in something they enjoy before theyre allowed to publicly enjoy it? the actors you mentioned arent even main characters.

so many viewers dont even know the names of the cast and creators let alone their views on palestine. be mad at the fucking president and people who can make a difference, not someone who enjoys a show and runs a blog.

i'm not asking anyone to do extensive research on who to support and who not to. disney is one of the BDS pressure targets, and making sure not to support content created by disney is quite literally the bare minimum an average consumer can do to support palestine. BDS has proven to be effective in ending different companies' ties with israel. people have been posting about how disney is one of the main targets to boycott for almost three months now. and while the call to boycott isn't strictly true, your average gifmaker who's "chronically online" would have definitely seen posts about it without doing any research at all. and mind you, most of the gifmakers i've seen on my dash creating pjo content are the same ones reblogging posts for awareness about palestine, with BDS being one of the most widely known ways to take a stand against israel. this, alone, should be enough for these creators to not engage with pjo content on their public blogs at all.

but since you seem to be in the mood for an argument, i think it's a pretty safe assumption that most of the people engaging with pjo content know that rick riordan authored the original books and he publicly posted about how he supports israel in their ongoing genocide against palestinians on his public blog, which again, isn't that hard to find.

beyond that, regardless of whether or not those actors are main characters or side characters, they are making money based on the success of the show. by streaming, by giffing, by doing any public promotion for the show at all, you are putting money into the pockets of people who support palestinian genocide.

and finally, i can be "mad at the president" but the average consumer also happens to be a "person who can make a difference," so forgive me for having the mental capacity to be mad at multiple things at once.

I would like to rant about something. It's been awhile since I've done that and it's been kinda bubbling under the surface for a long time.

Again: you can headcanon whatever the fuck you want, this just my "takes me out of a story" thing.

There have been a couple posts that I've seen going around lambasting people for using other names for Eddie then Edward (Edwin, Edison, Edmond etc) when it's on his missing poster as Edward Munson.

Only there is a couple things wrong with that.

One: Not everyone goes through every frame of the show and are actual causal viewers! I know, shocking! (heavy sarcasm here, folks) I personally had seen the missing poster gifed and screenshotted a billion times and never caught that they had his first and last name until someone pointed it out.

Two: it lists Eddie's age at 17. So how well can trust it, really? I know I've seen several takes from production getting the age wrong, to Wayne making him younger so people care, to Kas theory, to even Eddie being one of the kids that went missing before Will and his age is listed as what it would have been in 1983 (which could go either supernatural or Wayne just used the old missing poster from then).

So until there is something ELSE in the show that shows his name AS Edward, you can call him whatever you want, because canon just tells us that his name is Eddie.

So why am I bringing this up?

Because the people going around shouting this bit of information tend to also people who will use one or the other or even both of the next headcanons in their meta/fanfics.

1- Eddie CAN'T swim. This one always takes me out of the story when I see it because we have TWO on screen events that show him swimming. The first is the one most people forget. When Jason and his friends chase Eddie out onto the lake and he falls in. If he couldn't swim, dude would have DIED. But he makes it to Skull Rock. The second time is jumping after Steve. Trust as someone who can't swim, there is no way he would go jumping in after Steve if he couldn't. He would go back to shore and let the kids know what was going on.

So I tend to back out of a fic when I see it, because if you're off about that aspect of his character, I'm not sure I want to read further because what else might they get wrong about him.

2- This one is a doozy for me because it really makes me mad. When they say Wayne is Eddie's mom's brother.

"While all the other dads were teaching their kids to fish or to play ball...my old man was teaching me how to hotwire. Now I swore to myself I wouldn't wind up like he did, but now I'm wanted for murder and soon grand theft auto so...uh, yeah really living up to that Munson name."

Right, I had to transcribe the whole phrase because IMDb only had the hotwiring part. Because it's that last part that is so important to my point. Now I don't know if there are other ways to interpret that line, but if Wayne's last name is Munson and Eddie talks about living up to the Munson name...wouldn't the logic follow that Eddie's dad (named Allen Munson in the Stranger Things: First Shadow play and that's how I'll refer to him from now on to make it easier to type) is also a Munson? So if Wayne, Allen, and Eddie all share the same name wouldn't that make Wayne and Allen brothers?

Now, I think I know where this logic that Wayne is related to Eddie's mom and not his dad, is because how could sweet, hardworking Wayne be related to criminal, most likely in jail Al? Because I don't know who needs to hear this: but even growing up poor in a family that isn't known for its honest living (not that I think all the Munsons are like Al, by the way) one can still chose not to follow in those footsteps. Hell, Wayne could have even straightened up FOR Eddie.

Hell we know more about Eddie's dad then we do his mom. The only thing we know is that she isn't around to take care of Eddie. Dead, in jail, or just doesn't give a damn, she's not in Eddie's life.

So yeah, it upsets me because to me it smacks a little classist. Good guy Wayne can't be related to criminal Al *clutches pearls!* He absolutely is.

God this trailer! I can't stop thinking about it so you all have to suffer. Firstly I wanna say I wish Hoyo would animate like this all the time!! Omg these last two trailers have been fucking gorgeous then I see the bland nearly lifeless scenes of characters with their arms in their laps only moving their heads in normal game while they sit and I get mad as hell.

Like look at Venti's hair here. All of it is moving!! His bangs, the fringes on the side and his braids! Even the fucking flower is moving! It looks so good especially since in normal game Venti's hair barely moves apart from his braids. I wanna make a separate post about that another time.

Back to Haitham's trailer

It's so insane how different everything feels from normal game! The expression on Kaveh's face as he laughs and takes a sip of his drink. The way Cyno holds his cards and moves his arm. Not to mention this is such a breath of fresh air as much as I like Traveler we barely ever get scenes that have just the cast of characters that are all friendly enjoying each others company like this. I hope the anime is going to have scenes like this because it's perfect.

I gifed all my favorite scenes for everyone's easy perusal so I'm gonna gush over that now.

Cyno's eye and the way he looks at Tighnari. God he looks beautiful just kind of checking out the cards in his hand while Tighnari talks. I'm gonna say this a lot but it gives him so much more character and it feels so refreshing to know that at any point during the trailer you can watch any character and they'll be interacting with something!

Cyno's pout 🥺💞 God I love him so much he's endlessly adorable here. I couldn't not (double negative ehe..) put this part in, quite possibly my favorite part of the whole trailer.

The way the camera spins and everything about Tighnari's wide eyed expression. The way he leans into his own hand with a soft smile then blinks to attention he's too adorable as well. The slight tip of his hand too. All the characters here have very different body language. Haitham only speaking when spoken to and mostly keeping a very in his own space demeanor. Tighnari's hand gestures with pretty much everything he says and the way he's always touching his face. The way Kaveh points with his cup alot and has very broad gestures as he takes up a lot more space than the others and Cyno's hands either on his cards or very close to himself probably taking up the least amount of space aside from Haitham. God there's so much character here!! I wanna lick this demo. I'm not even an Al Haitham simp or stan but I had to watch this trailer again and again because it's just so goooooooddddd.

And archons this scene right fucking here. When I tell you goosebumps. Uggggghhhh. The way he cuts through and then immediately starts walking. Not gonna lie even I was starting to feel something for Haitham after this. Holy shit I just love this trailer ya'll. This is probably one of the prettiest character trailers we've ever gotten and we're probably never going to get anything like it ever a fucking gain.

Regardless I had to get this off my chest and just gush because good animation and character interaction is really hard to come by. This is the stuff I love seeing from Genshin I just want stuff like this dammit. I've seen so many people praising this trailer on Twitter and it deserves it. Shipping goggles on or not you can't deny this trailer is just excellent.

How is your phannie journey going? Have you somehow grown even more fond of them recently? Did you find any new favorite videos/moments recently? Or did you get too distracted by gamingmas and not have that much time to watch anything else?

So how do you feel about gamingmas ending? And entering the worst content drought since you became a phannie?

I honestly don't think I've processed it ending yet. I have gotten so used to them just always being here and us constantly having new things to talk about that it will take a moment to sink in that it's over now. Like what do you meannn we've had a new video every day for 24 days? How is it possible that I can actually scroll through the videos I was here for when they got released?

I'm back home right now, so I have other things to keep me occupied and I don't think I'll notice gamingmas ending as much as I would if I was alone. (Being able to drown unsuspecting victims (my siblings) in information about them has been really fun. I think they have quietly accepted that there is something wrong with me.)

The teeny tiny rational part that's left in me is almost relieved that gamingmas is over now because the daily uploads did take up a lot of mental space, so I think a calmer pace will actually be good for me.

But gods, it was fun and I am so glad I stuck around. Purely content wise it was soso good, I know I will rewatch most of these videos. But what truly made this experience for me was being on tumblr and seeing all the reactions and art and gifs. (If you're reading this gif makers, artists and editors I love you I love you I love you.) Man, it was so exciting, the energy was so cool and I loved how we were all just waiting for it together every evening. I think that's the thing I'll probably miss most about gamingmas, the certainty about new videos dropping and the event-like feeling it had.

Also, I usually really notice my mood dropping in winter but I have been doing really well this december, and while I did lose sleep over them occasionally I think overall gamingmas genuinely contributed to that.

So yes, I will be missing it but honestly, I'm mostly excited to see what the future brings because I think they really found a really great new (?) dynamic (between themselves obv but also with us) and some good new concepts. And I think bored phannie tumblr with withdrawal symptoms will be fun in the next few days.

I guess you could say I have grown more fond of them but in a different way. I was going to write that that first giddy excitement for them has worn off, but honestly, it truly hasn't. What has changed is that I have gotten...used to them being part of my life now? Like before gamingmas there was still a chance of me getting out of this unscathed but now it is too late. Okay, I know I like being dramatic, but what I mean by this is that now I know they'll stick around. Even if I started feeling more normal about them at some point, I would still keep up with them, I wouldn't stop...caring I guess.

Fandom wise, I keep settling more and more into this tumblr space and have gotten used to and very comfortable with the way things work around here. I really enjoy understanding the references (well, most of them anyways, and if I don't, I know who to ask). I like that by now I can guess which moments will be gifed and talked about. And that apparently the random things I say resonate with other people (I'm very used to just screaming into the void on the internet). Side note, wedding hill has been very entertaining to watch, even though I don't know enough nor truly feel like contributing to it.

Did you find any new favorite videos/moments recently? Or did you get too distracted by gamingmas and not have that much time to watch anything else?

I haven't had too much time (partially because of gamingmas, partially because of irl things) but I did dive into the radio shows a little bit and there are so many great moments in there. When I have some more time I will need to fully get into that. And the old liveshows!

I think the thing that shook me the most though was stumbling across "forever home" while listening to the stereo shows. It hit me completely unexpected (see my initial reaction). Something something happily phorever after, am I right?

(btw, I finally got through all of the stereo shows now and. I. need. more. Live shows, a podcast, something, pleaseee.)

I already have a mental list of things I really want to watch though and my "watch later" on youtube is overflowing, so I am definitely not running out of content any time soon.

So, in conclusion...

I am still very happy to be and stay here, but don't really mind things getting a bit calmer and I am genuinely very excited to see what the new normal they'll settle into next year will be like. And I am so here for the big things that will inevitably come (because something is coming, isn't it?).

TPN S02E05 - Initial Thoughts (anime-only)

That i didn’t immediately catch that they were two different groups was kind of embarrassing asuhjd- they do be surveilling. They clearly already tailed them, but idk why they didn't just show up at their hideout --- I guess that would have been too undramatic.

It was kind of obvious towards the end and I felt like they could have made it a little more dynamic. I don’t need still shots. Make them attack and the mask comes off after he also speaks or... idk, so many still frames; masks hiding any emotional reaction (though I do like the whole taking off mask reveal in theory); and then also the kind of.... EH reaction I’m just... idk, I expected more somehow but I can’t exactly pinpoint what I wanted differently.

(This whole thing kind of goes back to my initial theory way back after s1 how Norman might try to infiltrate the system as a demon and then have to pretend to not be their ally in front of them and have to pull through with something, or some tragic shit like that. Or one of them trying to kill him, but he can’t say anything and then they realize when the cover comes off --- yeah VERY BAD, I’m glad that’s not what’s happening.)

I’m assuming the tidbit about farms being raided “recently” means he’s not been out for that long (at least not longer than a few months) so that’d explain why it wasn’t brought up with Isabella.

I also don’t think anything happened when he was removed from GF - but between Norman’s surprised expression when entering the gate room and him being here now, I don’t think he was shipped out for food (unless the high quality ones don’t get flower’ed right away and instead only at their “eater” --- since that’d at least give the support duration for someone to rescue him or him to do something about his situation).

So I’m very curious to hear about that whole story and I have a small bit of hope that the recap episode will be framed as Norman talking about s1 from his perspective and then also transitioning over into what happened while they were apart either in next episode or the episode after that. Don’t think we need a recap either way, but OH WELL, I hope there’ll be SOME framing to it at least.

edit: I thought episode 6 would be a recap, but it’s 5.5 and likely due to production issues so forget my rant here, I’m fine with the recap. I’m not fine with staff being overworked but oh well that’s a whole different dilemma.

Though gotta also appreciate that anime really went opposite manga approach here, he didn't age AT ALL duisjsd. still babey. (edit: I didn’t know about his “inbetween” design as much and seeing them side by side it’s actually pretty accurate so yayyy. he babey anyway though)

. The demons' form

I didn’t post it I think but I actually made a “you are what you eat” joke in my ep3 post but discarded it because Sonju and Mujika look completely fine despite never having had any humans and I thought that’d throw a wrench in my thought.... and it still does so... that’s really interesting.

It also seems as if him saying “The world won’t change” is kind of..... like a prophecy sort of thing? It could just mean the massive class divide of course, but maybe if all the demons were well fed with humans, they’d achieve greater things? Since when you’re dying you’re kind of not in the condition to do anything, and if eating their body parts makes the demons adapt; is the implication that eating their brains makes demons smarter? if so that's a pretty literal parallel to the lower classes of society being robbed the chance to do something great by sheer circumstance. they're just actually dumber bc they don't get provided the materials to be smart

Honestly I’m a bit confused and not sure what it means, i can think of:

once a demon has ever eaten a human, they have to continue doing so

eating singular body parts makes them generate on you and you need “higher quality” humans to counter-act it. Would explain why Mujika and Sonju aren’t affected, since they don’t eat humans at all. Would also be an allegory for a healthy/balanced diet I GUESS but I don’t think it seems very plausible? it just seems kind of random.

They’re descendants from different demons and Sonju&Mujika simply don’t need to eat humans to maintain their form.

I also brought up that maybe it’s faith related / a placebo? But that seems even more forced.

I also don’t know if the implication is that they need ANY food, but then why are there hands on them?? So I do think it’s that it’s humans specifically that are either the problem or the solution. But since the bigger demons don’t seem to be affected AND the higher ups also not, I doubt it’s what causes the problems, unless it somehow is the whole balanced / “have to KEEP doing it” angle.

Also the demon scene in the ruins was so interesting, I really liked how it was so somber and kind of just... quiet. Emma, our queen, emphasizing once again.

I wonder if the demon realized it secretly or not... he seemed kinda overall nice and reasonable so I wouldn’t be super surprised if he noticed and just didn’t really care...

. The timeline

GF kids have been escaped for 1 year, they were a month at the bunker, so they’ve been out and about for another ~11 months.

Anna says nothing happened in the past 6 months; what else happened to them? just that they hid somewhere and had to flee again?

Is that also where they got their new clothes? i fail to see why they couldn’t just get them at the bunker, would make a bit more sense imo- but oh well.

farms keep being attacked recently and stealing children. it was def not our group, Norman's group potentially? They seem to be pretty badass, so that’s probably not unlikely.

Alternatively, it could be an overarching even bigger group that also rescued Norman, I think.

. Other things I liked

the scene of Emma being kind of lost was... pretty good, seeing our sunshine kind of doubt herself (understandably so after not making progress for an entire year) is pretty impactful. But i also feel like she’d try even harder to hide it in front of the others. but also why are you talking to a wall, are you mentally okay, probably not--- 

LOVED the nice subtle reveal to show how they mask their scent in the Lani and Thoma scene when they wanted to go with them

i'm not even a rayemma shipper and I still wanted Ray to do more than say a few lines and WALK AWAY?? ray what ya doin-

[Lani and Thoma] also literally why did you let them come. This season does really depend on someone fucking up and it’s kind of annoyingggggg :) Though in this case it isn’t that much their fault, they just stood around.

also why Norman only say “Emma” pls kill me. I was so happy that (very light manga spoiler) ...... Ray and Emma were both there for the reveal but fuck, the anime just straight up didn't care about Ray being there anyway :V

they better gife me a good trio hug to make up for this next (... uh... next-next TvT) episode

I do agree he’s back too soon but..... I kind of can’t hate them, with the whole 1 season to wrap it up chaos. Anime industry bad.

Well at least I’m excited and didn’t hate it. I’m somehow a little empty-headed but it was a good episode, and the surrounding anxiety probably just makes me a little iffy.... Hope the recap episode next week will have some merit and otherwise, see ya in two weeks.

hi jackie!! i've been following you for a while now and you actually inspired me to start making gifs too, but i'm a little lost since i've never done it. idk if you've answered something similiar, but could you talk a little abt where to start (like where you download the videos, what programs you use, etc)? if you've answered this before it's ok too!! anyway hope you had a good day and thank uuuu

omg :’) you’re so sweet. i’m so happy i inspired you to start!!!! i’ve never answered a question like this before so you’re totally fine lol i’ll try to explain it as best as i can fjkdsfjkdsj 

i usually get all of my videos from youtube or for live stages i use this site, this site, or this site. (i download the videos from youtube using “4k video downloader.”) then i use “Vapoursynth” for sizing and Photoshop 2020 to create my gifs! for sizing: when it’s 2 side by side make them 268px, when it’s 3 side by side you make them 177px/178px/177px and when it’s top to bottom (idk how to word this omg) make them 540px. 

when making my gifs i use topaz clean or topaz denoise to edit them and make them look nicer. i use topaz clean for a majority of my gifs (settings below) but when i gif a live stage i use topaz denoise (i usually use the light setting). also different sharpening settings are very helpful (not every gifset requires the same settings) but i always use smart sharpen! (my usual settings below) for editing i do have some saved psds that i favor and use multiple times but it really depends on the gifs you’re making. every gif needs different brightness, exposure, etc. so just do what you feel is right! 

when i first started gifing i had no idea what i was doing but don’t feel discouraged. i promise you, you will get that hang of it soon and feel so comfortable making them!!!!! i hope this was helpful in some way??? and i’m here if you have any more questions :)

Hongjoong being the dad he is, would make sure he brought enough sunscreen and water for all the boys as well as a picnic lunch

Hongjoong would also have t-shirts for him and all the boys that would say ‘Team ATEEZ’ or something so they can find each other. Maybe the staffs and production crew can wear them too if they go

Wooyoung would want to feed the giraffes (I feel like Wooyoung is a giraffe person)

Mingi would stay in the penguin exhibit and try to communicate with them

Seonghwa and Yeosang would argue over who would be thrown in the tiger pit and Hongjoong would shut them up by saying he’d throw them both in if they didn’t stop arguing

San and Jongho would drag Yeosang into the gif shop where San would look for more shibers and Jongho would look at different souvenirs

I think ATEEZ going to the zoo would be so cute and I can see all these things happening in my mind. Gosh, and a zoo date with one of the members or just out as friends would be super adorable. I’ve been to the zoo I think twice (before I started school and in the 1st grade) but I only remember going before I started school. I specifically remember riding in a lil wagon that my father’s father pulled and my siblings and mom were there and my sister got a butterfly purse, my brother got a long snake plush and I got a giraffe plush that had all kinds of colors and patterns on it and I still have it. no offense, but why are you giffing things that have already been giffed? especially those who've been in the tags for a while. i think it'd be less work for you to gif something that needs resources and it wouldn't push other gif packs down the tag.

because i want to gif what i gif… i mean, most of my gifs are for fcs i play. especially when it comes to legacies, i’ve gifed every episode of both seasons and was actually the first person to release gifs from the show. it’s something i enjoy to gif. and i do take offense a bit, it isn’t nice to tell someone who gifs what they should and shouldn’t gif, especially since i work on the things i gif for days before posting them.

I’d love to! If it can help you improve in any way then I am totally down to help you out, just tell me if there’s something you don’t understand and I’ll try to break it down to you!!

Okay then, I’ll begin explaining the basics first then I’ll break my way of giffing down to you. For starters:

1. You have to have Photoshop. I use PS CS6 but since i don’t really know if you have Photoshop or not, I’m just going to explain my style with the kind of PS i use. If you don’t have Photoshop I suggest you search for some trustworthy links and get yourself one because giffing without it is…well, it isn’t impossible but it’s unlikely that they’ll end up coming out as HQ as you want them to.

2. You don’t actually have to have this one, but it’s what I and some of (if not all) of my giffer friends use and it’s called Avisynth. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it or not but it’s a, I call it an extension but it’s called something else I just can’t remember what it’s name is. It’s important because it can give you an extra sharp look on your gifs like the one’s mine have and make it into focus but it’s also essential for making performance gifs so I will highly suggest you consider it or something like Vaporsynth but giffing without it is also possible.

3. Video quality is seriously important when you’re gifing, almost as important as having PS if you’re on a goal to achieve HQ gifs. Most videos are released in either 720 pixels or 1080 pixels but recently 2160px has come in but it’s not as used so you don’t have to worry about it right now unless you’re giffing fancams or sometimes MVs that are released in 2160 like ASTRO’s All Night or NUESTs Love Paint. But I have to stress you download your videos in 1080px or if there’s none 720px, don’t settle for anything less than that unless you ABSOLUTELY have to.

Okay, now I’ll explain how I gif my videos using the information above that i’ve briefly talked about, I’ll try to break down my style of giffing here but remeber majority of my gifs rely on my coloring and psds rather than my sharpening or something like that.

For starters when I’m giffing a video, say an episode of a group: the video is always downloaded in the highest quality regardless of how long it can take (some videos can end up being 1GB or higher so be careful about your space as well because PS can slow down from your computer being too full and if you’re in a rush that won’t be good for you.) and then I pick the scenes I want to gif.

When I know what I want to gif I input it into Avisynth ‘normalweb or normalwebrange’ this will make sense once you get an Avisynth but for now it’s like a cmd action that takes you to Resizer that will now help you sharpen your gif and pck the dimensions you want it to come in. For dimensions there’s all kind of sizes (268 by 350, 540w by 250 or higher height, etc.) but it’s all up to the kind of gifs you want to make, I’ll link some so that you understand what I mean.

While I’m in avisynth’s resizer (it opens on a web browser so you have to set it on which browser you’re most comfortable with. I use Chrome if you want to try it) I set my dimensions and increase the extra sharpening to 25 or 30 and then I copy the code at the bottom and close the page. I’ll try to explain this part since I know I haven’t made much sense.

When you open the folder where your avisynth is supposed to be (There’s another tutorial for putting avisynth in your computer if you want) there should be several windows batch files that go like ‘normalwebm’ or ‘normalwebm32′ etc. I use the webm32 because it captures more frames but the choice, in the end, is yours. The normalwebm32 should redirect you to the browser settings to Avisynth either by you or by the program itself and it’ll open a page called resizer where you can resize your gif, choose the placement and sharpening. The size of the gif is up to you so you can put whatever kind of dimensions you want, choose the placement and also set your own extra sharpening. At the bottom of the extra sharpening, there should be a white page with words like a code on it, those words should change each time you change something about the placement or sharpening and in some cases the speed but it’s best reserved for performance gifs. You need to copy that entire code and make sure you’ve left nothing out and then close the page. Avisynth will then redirect you to another app called Avspmod that will help you cut out the unnecessary parts of your gifs you don’t need or want. You can also preview it so you can check how it looks. After that you need to Ctrl+S and the script, basically what you’ve been doing will be saved and after closing the app, it should begin getting processed by another app called VirtualDub that will do all the work for you and then you would need to go to a folder where your avisynth is and look for somewhere called vdub and there you will find another app called VirtualDub. You need to click on it and it’ll show you your gif but in video format. Don’t worry, this is okay and is should come out moving as a video but with no sound and should be classified as a .avi.  This part I’ll demonstrate it to you later with a video but this is how you do it.

After doing all of that and converting your video into a gif, you just need to input it into PS by a script which you’ll find in the File at the top left corner of PS. You’ll need to browse and find where your gif was transformed into and select the frames you need and then they’ll be loaded into PS as a single file.

From here, I can’t explain it with words, therefore, I’ll record how I do it and put it in this ask. I know I didn’t do much to help and probably made it worse but trust me, it’ll make sense once you can see examples of it.

I'd love to learn about some of your favourite colouring techniques!

I’m sorry this took me so long to get to! I realized after I made the offer that the gifs that best exemplify my favorite tricks were lost when my hard drive broke, so I had to make some new examples. Since I gif Star Trek a lot, this is going to focus on primary colors (gotta love those Starfleet uniforms) as well as neutrals and blacks.

My single guiding principle when coloring is to find the complementary colors and make the warm colors warmer and the cool colors cooler. As fate or kismet or happenstance would have it, this works especially well with Spirk edits because of their blue and gold uniforms. Unfortunately, none of my Spirk psds survived the purge, so here are some other examples.

It took a couple of color balance layers to get that red as bright as I wanted it, but this shot needed a warm color to contrast with the blue and purple.

I brought out the blue of the planet and tried to restore the yellow of Kirk and Sulu’s uniforms. 

I lightened the blues, got rid of the green in the yellows, brightened the reds, and made the blacks and neutrals cooler. Like I said: the warm colors are warmer ad the cool colors are cooler. (My gifs aren’t usually that purple, but I’ve been in a purple mood lately. 🌈🌈🌈)

So if I wanted to gif this scene the first thing I’d do after sharpening and lightening it is create a selective color layer and go into the yellows.

It usually takes two or three selective color layers to get the yellow where I want it. (In the case below, all those layers led to Kirk’s uniform becoming pixelated, which is a price I’m willing to pay to get rid of the scene’s drab monochromism.)

Because there’s no red in this scene other than in their faces, I’m going to do something similar with the reds.

Not a huge difference, but if the gif were moving, you’d notice that it added some color to their faces. Note: the above approach to yellow and red work best on white characters. I use the same basic technique when coloring characters of color, but moving the black sliders to the left might result in whitewashing, so be wary!

On to blues! I like them light and bright.

I do something similar with the cyans:

This still looks drab and monochrome to me, so I’m going to go into the neutral colors.

You can see the different in their faces and in Jim’s hair. It also affected the blues, so I might tweak them later. But first, I’m going to alter the blacks.

The most important coloring lesson I can impart is that not all blacks are equal. A lot of movies give their blacks a green hue, which I find pretty ugly, so I tried to restore the dirty blonde of Chris Pine’s hair and add a little bit of blue (not cyan, not green, but blue). 

Another tip that might be obvious but took me a while to figure out: Take advantage of the masks on your coloring layers! That’s what I did the last time I gifed this scene because I had added one too many selective color layers to brighten the yellow and Chris Pine started to look like he had jaundice. The unnatural yellow in his skin in the above example? I hit the vector mask and colored it away with the paint brush tool! This can also help prevent whitewashing. It allows you to alter Uhura’s uniform without changing her skin tone!

The rain pelted down on you as you ran down the street, jacket hauled up over your hair since you weren’t wearing a hat and it didn’t have a hood. You stopped at a red pedestrian light but looked both ways quickly before making a run for it anyway. The Starbucks you were meant to be at forty minutes ago was right up the street and you didn’t have time to stand idly in the rain for a total of zero cars to roll on past.

You were panting heavily when you finally crashed through the door of the café, but it only took a few moments and a quick glance around the place to realise that your friends had well and truly left without you. You checked your phone to see if anybody had messaged you, but you already knew before the screen lit up that they hadn’t.

You groaned (louder than you meant to) unsure if you were pissed or upset about it. All you knew for sure was that you were sopping wet, your freshly blown-out hair ruined and your supposedly “waterproof” mascara running down your face.

“I hate my life...” You huffed bitterly, letting yourself sink into an empty loveseat near the front window. You let yourself melt into the warmth, eyes closed and breathing still uneven.

“Hey… are you okay?” Someone near you asked carefully, and you frowned at the question with your eyes still closed.

“Fan-fucking-tastic. What do you think?” You snapped automatically.

“Uh… no?”

When you opened your eyes and sat your head up again a tall blond with a sheepish, pursed lip smile and bright blue eyes were staring at you pretty intensely. Your cheeks blushed as he shifted uncomfortably under your gaze.

“Sorry...” You mumbled, sitting up awkwardly so you weren’t draped over the seat ungracefully anymore. “I… I didn’t mean to be rude.”

“It’s fine.” He gave a one-shouldered shrug. “I saw you run in, I just wanted to make sure you were… okay.” He offered another one of those awkward smiles and you rubbed the back of your neck, embarrassed.

“Ah.” You looked away as you flushed even pinker. “Yeah, that was… it’s nothing, don’t worry about it.”

You glanced back at the taller boy from corner of your eye, completely expecting him to wonder off in deep regret for even thinking of talking to a psycho like you. But he was still standing behind the seat across from you, something like sincerity deep-set in his eyes.

“Do you… wanna talk about it?” He offered and a flicker of something fluttered in your chest. You squished it down quickly, though, biting your tongue and fighting the urge to just cry.

“It’s… no, no.” You shook your head. “I’m okay, I don’t wanna bother… you…?” The sentence came out like a drawled-out question as the blond just turned and walked off half-way through. Your bottom lip poked out in a rather childish pout as you watched his back seemingly float away. You gave another huff, sinking back into the cushions of the loveseat.

“Whatever.” You sighed. “Just my luck.”

You were about to gather your things to leave when He came back, side-stepping around the other seat before sitting down in front of you. He sat a silver table number onto the coffee table between the seats along with a plate with a piece of New York styled cheesecake and two cake forks.

“I got time.” He said with a smile, offering you one of the forks.

“Luke. I really don’t think this is a good idea.” You said into the receiver. You were dressed to the nines in a pair of new ripped skinny jeans and a fire truck red strapless top that hugged your curves gently (but still left enough to the imagination). You switched the phone from one ear to the other as you heard Luke groan on the other end of the line.

“Y/N, can you just trust me? Please?” He begged you through a chuckle. You almost heard his eyes roll, right as you rolled your own.

“Why would I do that?” You shot at him as you saw the Uber pull up in front of your house.

“Uh, because I’m Luke fucking Hemmings, remember?” He said and you scoffed. “Hey, don’t scoff at me. That’s what you said at Starbucks.”

“Yeah – like two weeks ago!” You fired back. “Let it go already!”

“I will not, and you willhear about it for as long as you live.” He said matter-of-factly, not even bothering to let you retort this time. “Just, do this for me, okay?”

“Luke…” You sighed, slipping on your flats and grabbing your clutch and keys before stumbling out the door. “Luke, I really don’t want to meet your friends.”

“They’re not just my friends, Y/N.” He said.

“Yeah, yeah. They’re your bandmates– whatever.” You rolled your eyes again. “But what if they don’t like me?” You found yourself biting your lip as you pulled the seatbelt over your chest and smiling to the Uber driver who just nodded politely and started on his way.

“They will.” Luke urged you. “It’s gonna be fine.”

“If you say so.” You tell him, unconvinced.

“Y/N! Smile!” Calum wrapped his arms around your neck from behind you as Michael held the camera up in front of you both, giggling away like a child. You narrowed your eyes just knowing he was on snapchat.

“Jesus, Mike, what filter are you using?” You pulled a sidelong look and he laughed again as Calum let you go, sprint around the sofa so he could sidle up to the bottle-blond and look at the phone. Soon enough Calum was giggling too with his tongue peeking out between his teeth.

“Guu-uuyss!” You whined, expertly splitting the word into two syllables. “Don’t make me ugly!”

“I believe the word you’re looking for is ugli-er.” Michael cackled, quickly ducking out of the way as you hurled the cushion you were using as a backrest at him.

“LUKE!” He yelled “Luke, she’s trying to kill me again!”  Michael pulled Calum in front of him to use as a human shield as you threw another pillow at him.

“Hey!” The brunet protested weakly through a laugh, so you threw one more cushion and hit him straight in the gut. He groaned loudly – louder than necessary – and you just laughed.

“Fuck you both.” You rolled your eyes before letting yourself fall back across the sofa, watching the rest of the boys run around with their drinks and their Snapchat while you relaxed.

“I believe a congratulation is in order!” Ashton practically bellowed, the words slurring just a little as he raised his red plastic cup in the air. Everybody followed suit with their various cups and cans of liquor, you and Luke looking at each other with arched brows before you looked back to the other tipsy Australian.

“Uh, why?” You laughed as Ashton trained his sights on you, and you flushed red as the other boys all turned to look at you too. It’d been weeks since you’d met them all and you thought maybe you’d get used to that after a while. But no, they were all still a little more than intimidating sometimes.

“Because!” Ashton proclaimed. “You have been in our lives for a couple of months now and as of last night – that we know of – you’ve been GIFed!”

“GIFed!” The other three shouted with their drinks in the air. Your eyes bulged, and your lips weren’t sure if they wanted to make an O or smile.

“I…? Uh, what?!” You stammered and everyone laughed while Calum handed you his phone. You took it quickly, eager to see what the fuck they were on about, and as soon as you turned the iPhone the right side up you saw he’d pulled up a Tumblr page.

Ashton was right. It was a GIF, mostly of Luke at first, but right near the end of the loop was you making a face before being kissed sloppily on the cheek. By Luke. Your cheeks flamed a burning red, eyes still wide as hell. The GIF was from a few nights ago at another one of your secret dance parties at Michael’s place. Calum had been doing one his rare Instagram livestreams and you didn’t realise that he’d caught that on camera. Inside, you were screaming.

But the guys were laughing and they seemed… proud. And happy. So, you let yourself smile and you drank to the toast – and then drank a whole lot more to drown out the memory.

You laughed at the tweet – it was supposed to be funny. It wasfunny. You knew he would get it.

There wasn’t a lot to get, the asshole really had left a small bag full of clothes at your house the last time he’d visited. Not for any reason, really, but in the months that you’d known him you knew that it was always bound to happen from time to time. He was a busy guy, and obviously you’d already cleaned it all. Shit-stirring was just your thing. Had been for, well, months.

Your phone started to vibrate violently on the kitchen counter a few minutes later, so you turned down the pasta on the stove and wandered over thinking it was Luke calling. The phone was flashing but when you picked it up, it was just Twitter. A lot of Twitter – too many to even count.

Tweet after tweet started rolling through and you frowned, confused. Ever since you’d met Luke you’d gotten used to a few mentions here and there and to the influx of followers on all of your social media accounts. But this was something different, something you weren’t quite familiar with.

You opened the app and your stomach sank as you immediately wished you hadn’t. They were hate tweets, flooding your mentions, all of them ranging from grammar Nazis to actual Nazis. You breath caught in your throat, fingers trembling so much that your phone actually dropped with a loud crackonto the tiled floor.

You knew that there were fans out there that weren’t overly happy with your presence in the lives of their Favourite Boys, but this was something else. Something you never would have thought would happen to you. You felt your bottom lip quiver and you couldn’t stop the small sob that slipped from your lips. Tears fell slowly down your cheeks, and for the first time in months, you were really glad that Luke wasn’t around.

The boys called for you as they filed in, this week’s secret dance party being held at your place. You jumped, surprised that they were here already. You weren’t expecting them for at least another hour, you hadn’t even gotten dressed yet. You were still sitting in your room in your bath towel, scrolling through your twitter feed.

You tried not to, especially after what had happened last week. And you did well for a few days, you just deleted the app and that was that. You couldn’t see the comments anymore so they couldn’t hurt you.

You just wanted to know if they’d stopped yet. You re-downloaded twitter to check and now, here you were, naked and trying to cover up the fact that you were crying again because you could hear somebody walking down the hallway towards your room.

“Y/N? You in here?” Luke knocked on the door but opened it up anyway, his sense of boundaries with you having disappeared weeks ago. You stumbled with your phone for a few seconds before you finally shoved it under your leg.

“Dude, what the fuck, I’m naked.” You shot weakly with an attempt at a frown. As soon as Luke saw you he frowned back, closing the door carefully and rushing over to you.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked, worry dripping from his tongue.

“Nothing, I’m fine.” You huffed, shifting uncomfortably on the bed as Luke sat next to you with your legs touching. You tried to move over a little bit to create some space, but you knew your phone would slip out if you did so you just leaned away from him a little bit.

“Cut the shit, Y/N.” Luke said, hand already on your back, carefully placed on the towel instead of your skin. You sniffled and shook your head. “Y/N, what’s up?”

Your throat tightened and you knew that whatever you said next was going to be accompanied by more tears. It sucked. You hated feeling so vulnerable, especially in front of Luke.

“I just…” Your lip quivered and you bit it in an attempt to make it stop. You glanced up at Luke for just a second, but that was all it took to tip you over the edge. You let out a dark laugh as a few tears escaped down your cheeks.

“I feel like an idiot!” You practically wailed, throwing your hands into the air before burying your face in them. You sobbed more than you had before into your hands, letting Luke pull you to him so he could wrap his arms around you properly.

“Hey!” He said in your ear. “Hey, come on, where is this coming from?! You’re not an idiot.”

“I am!” You replied, the words muffled by your hands. Luke pushed you away, hands grabbing your wrists so he could pull your hands away from your face and look into your eyes properly.

“Y/N, stop.” He said carefully, not really scolding you but trying to get you to calm down. You were about to hyperventilate, chest heaving and breaths shallow. “Breathe, bub, come on.” He reached for your face, thumb brushing away new tears spilling over your lash line. “What happened?”

You took a few more seconds to take some deep breaths and steady yourself before you even tried to speak again. You wiped your nose ungracefully on the towel and sighed.

“I… I just feel like I should have seen this coming, you know?” You finally said, so quietly you were almost afraid he wouldn’t hear you.

“Seen what coming, Y/N?” He asked, a frown embedded into his brow. You looked up at him, almost in disbelief but mostly just questioning.

“As if you haven’t noticed.” You deadpanned and Luke just shook his head, still not following what you were trying to say. You took another deep breath and closed your eyes.

“I… I’m getting a lot of… comments made about me.” You finally said the words out loud and it felt like a big weight had already been lifted off of your shoulders. When you opened your eyes, Luke’s face seemed to fall even more. He didn’t say anything though, and a new panic started to rise in your chest as you wondered if maybe he was mad at you now. If maybe that meant you couldn’t be friends anymore.

“Shit, Y/N…” he said after what felt like forever. “Y/N… I’m so sorry.” You sniffed again but shrugged, turning your face away from him so he couldn’t see the new tears pooling in your eyes.

“It’s whatever.” You said nonchalantly, finally feeling just numb enough as you braced yourself for the worse.

“Don’t say that, Y/N.” He seemed to tell you off. “It’s not whatever, it’s fucked up.”

You just shrugged again.

“Yeah, I know. But it’s whatever.”You snapped your head back up to look at Luke and he was frowning again, this time seeming a little angry. “It was bound to happen eventually, alright.”

Luke sighed, arm slinking around your shoulders again. The skin of his wrist brushed your bare skin for a second and you got shivers.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Y/N?” He said, softer now and pulling you closer so that you didn’t really have a choice but to rest your head into the crook of his neck. You gave a final heavy shrug and tried not to let the closeness between you fuck with your heart too much.

“I just… I thought I could handle it.” You told him, almost whispering. “I don’t want you to worry about me.”

Luke pressed a kiss to the top of your head and you really hoped he couldn’t feel you flush pink.

“I want to worry about you, Y/N.” He said. “I care about you.”
