Here's my predictions for 4.2 based on the trailer. Note that in the last couple patches Hoyoverse has upped the misdirection in the trailers by a LOT, so it's possible half the things we see are something else entirely.

-"Everyone's dead" is either taken out of context or everyone in Fontaine in indeed dead. Either the primordial sea actually flooded everything, thus the clips of fontaine submerged, and Furina is trying to find a way to reverse it or that was some sort of dream or cutscene explaining the prohphecy.

-The whale could either be a creature of the primordial sea (maybe abyss since it was calling to Childe?) or it could be the added consciousness of the people of Fontaine after the flood, similar to the oceanid formed by the missing women case victims.

-"The part you [Neuvillette] have played over the last 500 years." I believe this implies that Furina did have a plan. In 4.0 and 4.1 a lot of focus and stress is put on Furina for the fact that she's not doing anything about the prophecy, but I believe she's had a plan the whole time and she's kept it secret. She's not as incompetent as she seems. As for the missing gnosis, it could be in the oratrice, but it could also be maybe used as bait to get the whale to go to a certain location.

-The presence of Skirk implies that the primordial sea and thus the whale are connected to the abyss. This is supported by the fact that Tartaglia kept being called towards the whale. Since he had good control of his vision in the abyss, his loss of control over it is still unexplained.

-The guilliotine. Now, I believe Furina is not dead. I believe this is misdirection at its finest, the same as in the 4.0 trailer with Lynette dissolving into the water (it was just a normal magic trick) so I believe the guilliotine was being used on someone else or if not, Furina was rescued before it came to that. The image of Furina's hat falling the the ground is probably from another sequence of events entirely, maybe her bowing an apology to her people at the end for keeping them in the dark and the hat slipping off?

-At 2:08 we see the clock in the roof of the Narzissenkreuz headquarters fall down. This signifies that the prophecy is either fulfilled or in progress, as said in the trailer also.

“As light rain falls without reason” Fontaine Trailer Theories

4.0 is upon us, there is a new trailer to be analysed.

The first thing I want to focus on is everything regarding “the water is slowly swallowing our memories”.

Fontaine has a water problem, as the water levels are slowly going up, gradually swallowing the entire city. There are many ruins down there, from the old city, that are inaccessible now. I believe that is part of the loss of memory problem. If you don’t have any records about what came before, the generations after you will not remember anything about it. Freminet also said that all will join this underwater museum someday, and that’s true. For those able to dive, those ruins prove valuable insight into the lives of those before, but the problem is diving is a dangerous profession. Not many are able to.

A bit more literally tied to memory loss is the blue figure we saw a glimpse of in the water. I feel like it might be an oceanid, but I’m not sure. They questioned who they were, and couldn’t recall any memories. They seem to have been there underwater for a long time, so did the water swallow their memory? Might it be that the water in Fontaine has some kind of properties that make staying in it for too long dangerous because you might lose your memories? If this (admittedly a bit out there) theory is correct, I’m worried about Freminet, because he seems most comfortable underwater and seems to spend most of his time there.

But enough about underwater, let’s get above ground and into the courthouse.

We learn that neither the judge nor Focalor actually deliver the sentences. Rather, there is a scale, the oratrice, which judges those brought before the court independently and apparently does so with great precision. It is also said to be conscious. This thing generates energy based on the excitement the people feel when justice is delivered and I wager that it has a bigger part in the memory problem. When you judge people to be put behind bars, and as this thing is very precise, there are no opportunities to get your case rejudged, once you’re imprisoned you stay imprisoned. When you remove people from the public eye, you also remove them from the public mind, to be forgotten and left behind. After a court case has happened, I bet no one really cares what happens afterwards, because there always is the next court case to be watched.

And I wonder, as Fontaine city faces an energy problem, how likely is it that, while maybe the oratrice’s judgement was precise in the past, it doesn’t judge that precisely anymore, desperate to squeeze every bit of energy out of any given court case? There already is a group of people that the wealthy public doesn’t care about, the people living in the sewers, and poverty is evidently easy to criminalise. They aren’t even remembered by the general public unless there is an exciting court case going on at the moment and they will be forgotten before the bars close behind them, but their case might still generate a bit energy.

And that’s a problem, no? When you treat humans as a resource, they lose every ounce of humanity they have. Focalor cares more about her cold, hard laws, than her everyday citizens. The humans, the people they put behind bars are forgotten in favour of the energy they produce. And there are so many court cases, too! It’s even easier for one individual to drown in the masses. Soon there won’t be any actual criminals to judge anymore, and then what? Fontaine city will just stop working? I doubt they’ll allow that to happen, but this system is so flawed from the beginning, upholding status quo might not be an option. There is one last desperate attempt to try though. The traveler is coming to Fontaine. Were they involved in a court case, being really popular already, the energy levels that court case produces might reach new highs. Not solving the energy issue, but slowing it down for a bit.

Now, a bit more about the prophecy.

All of Fontaine will drown and the hydro archon will sit alone on her throne on top of it all and weep. Her Bing alone might be because all have been judged in an attempt to generate energy or just because the water levels are too high. Something to mention is also the way that character reacted to the rain, right after that clock stopped working. Because for a character living in the hydro nation, it seems silly to be so confused/shocked by rain, unless they don’t actually have it. That might’ve been a measure to slow the rising water levels and as the city doesn’t generate enough energy anymore, the mechanism to stop the rain stopped functioning. Or another thing might be that the character was in the city, in which case it would be unnatural in all of tevat, because there is no rain in cities. The rain might also be symbolic of the archons tears in the prophecy, meaning that the final hours have come. (Even though the clock stopped working)

Lyney and Lynette seem to have gotten themselves in a deep mess.

They are trying to figure out how the oratrice is working. I’m wondering what their motive is. Are they working under Arlecchino under their own free will? Lynette disappeared/dissolved in one of their magic shows. I’m unsure on who to blame for it. It might’ve been orchestrated by themselves to get out of something or to snoop around, or she got taken against her will in which case the question is from what side? The Fatui as a threat because they don’t want to work with them anymore? Fontaine because they’re trying to figure out how the oratrice works? The Abyss? I’m also wondering, if they get caught messing with the oratrice and brought before court before it, will it be able to remain impartial? How far extends its consciousness?

Anyway, Childe being there also complicates things. I’m wondering if he works with Arlecchino or against her. I’m leaning more to the against her option. Also just a funny little tidbit, but I find it funny that while Fontaine is the nation of hydro, it has flying vehicles, (in the form of fish but still!) seems a bit unfitting.
