Sunken Ships and SoRiku

Hi internet void. I went feral and maybe you'll read the result.

KH has made a lot of choices around SoRiku from a narrative perspective that, in isolation, wouldn't amount to much. A heart-to-heart here, a questionable line there, and so on. The usual things that one would do to court a queer shipping audience in an otherwise het or unromantic work. And SoRiku circles have painstakingly documented every instance to show something that looks more like a consistent and intentional effort rather than a few dollops here and there to keep shippers engaged. There's... a lot. But one stupid, insignificant thing really shook me up and made me a believer in SoRiku Endgame, Actually.

Silly as it is, it's Nomura's reaction to people shipping RikuNami that gets me the most.

Generally speaking a writer doesn't want to interact with fandom shipping unless it's to urgently course correct. As in it would be catastrophic to the narrative if the fandom had the wrong idea. Otherwise it's best to just take note of how people are interpreting things and adjust the next installment accordingly, or live and let live. Keep distant and don't risk accusations of retconning/bad writing/queerbaiting in bad faith. So the normal reaction from Nomura seeing people get excited over RikuNami would have been to just do nothing. But instead, the scene was patched to downplay the smile, and Nomura went on the record to clarify that it's not a setup for a romantic relationship between Riku and Namine.

That's insane.

Why is it so important that Riku remain romantically uninterested in a girl he'd have a natural connection to, huh? What about accidentally implying RikuNami was so detrimental to the story that it was changed and explicitly addressed like that? Even if it wasn't meant to be, surely letting it play out like AkuRoku did would be enough. Just gently clarify and move on with the story (which pretty much sunk the ship on it's own anyway). You don't wade into fandom shipping and launch nuclear warheads like Nomura did against RikuNami unless you want to leave no room for doubt.

Torpedoing RikuNami also doesn't help them keep up appearances in terms of straightness at this point. Leaving it intact would only help the case of Riku and Sora being bffs with the strongest bond 5ever- a huge boon for the writing team if they wanted to avoid things looking too gay. Nomura et. al. are absolutely aware of the impressions and jokes about how gay KH is. And KH definitely would not be the first series to play in to queer ship teasing for the lols until it's time to pair everyone up at the end.

But they did the one thing you're not supposed to do if you're just aiming to queerbait: undermining the plausible straight ship. You don't eliminate the only straight option for your character like that for the sake of "he so gay" jokes! Having a straight option available is vital to make the bait; they don't have to be compelling or important to the story, they just have to exist. Yet at this point, Riku's only option is Sora. They went out of their way to ensure we wouldn't think anything else makes sense for him.

Kaede - Rogue of Time (she be fucking with the timeline for everyone elses sake and kinda just. Politely ignoring that she's fucking her own timeline. She's trying to live her best life but she just sniffs out the inconsistencies of shit around her and she just GOTTA do something about that she's not the thinker but she's smart in her own way)

Gonta - Rogue of Mind (thinks they don't have enough intellect, and thinks they wouldn't know how to best use their brain, so they heavily invite other people to use their mind for them,,, Yeah I aint gotta elaborate)

Peko AND Mukuro - Rogue of Heart (I hate to see doubles but dawg. What does Peko do for Fuyuhiko and what does Mukuro want to be for Junko. For varying reasons they both desire to give their heart to someone so hard and just "act out that persons will" but like no 1. They do NOT succeed because 2. They actually have no grip on their own will OR that persons real desires/"will")

Bards (they do not directly harm their aspect. They, by ignorance and lackadaisicalness towards their aspect, create an environment that encourages other people / other things in general to massively destroy their aspect. Bards tend to have/need a major epiphany that FUCKS them or changes them for the better)

Leon - Bard of Hope (he has so much faith that he'll become something he has. No. Way. Of becoming. And decides to hate and ignore the thing he is good at or things that would ACTUALLY give him the fate he wants and just follow his dick and be lazy and just hope for good things until he is TOTALLY fucked 5ever)

Soda - Bard of Mind (kinda interesting one here because a Bard of mind is a very internal bard. This is a person who won't make any HUGE external blowups (more likely many minor ones), this is someone who will just become a complex downward spiral of infinite confusion of who they are and wether they can trust anyone and what they stand for. A bard of mind is basically just a black hole of insecurity until they have some HUGE personality altering epiphany that makes them get the fuck over it all)

Mikan - Bard of Life (passive asf for a Bard, this is somebody that somehow embodies Life and growth as a concept but also just completely fucking obliterates their ability to meet their own potential or grow as a person by doing shit that invites absolute humiliation and abuse. They invite Doom into their life by how they handle the aspect of Life. Epiphanies really vary here not gonna lie)

Ryoka - Bard of Light (saddest Bard. A Bard of Light is someone extremely wise, smart, knows where fate and luck could actually go, but they choose to ignore ALL of that for some bullshit because they very firmly believe they are just fucked. A bard of light will ignore their own wisdom and others wisdom for shockingly laid back, passive, sad reasons. Their epiphany is suddenly realizing "holy fuck my life wasn't totally fucked I could have done a million things to change it oh my god" no matter what a Bard of Light is a jaded sage, either a heavily repressed depressed one or the wise frog from mario rpg)

Hajim is an Heir of Doom and Nagito is a Mage of Light and it's just. Chefs kiss. Hajime gets his ass slurped by the institution that is Hopes peak and Nagito BEEN getting his ass wooped by what? Luck? Knowledge? Yeah Light BWOI

I JUST FINISHED READING YOUR FIC (UN)FORGETTABLE AND I NEED TO JUST YELL ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE BECAUSE IT WAS SO GOOD

I think it’s very funny that Gio turned out to be Gman, I did not suspect that at ALL it was such a jumpscare but like absolutely AMAZING

I loved the recreation of the scene where Benrey interrupts Gman while he’s talking to Gordon but with Gordon being the one to do the interrupting, oh my GOD I did not expect that to be recreated at ALL but it was SO GOOD

I found it very funny every time Benrey and Forzen interacted because if it had happened in the original stream it would have just been Scorpy talking to himself LMAO but you did a really good job distinguishing their characters despite there only being a couple minutes of Forzen content

Just all of the general nods and recreations of scenes in the original story were so good I stimmed SO HARD every time it happened oh my god!! Gordon teleporting behind the door into the test chamber and asking Benrey for ID. Benrey arguing with Gman over Chuck E Cheese being an entertainment center or restaurant. I cant think of anything else right now but oh my GOD it was so funny

I also like how in character they were even outside the context of previous RTVS bits, and it was still HILARIOUS. Benrey and Gordon fucking around with Gman in the tram scene absolutely FLOORED ME I was reading it at like 2 am when everyone else in my house was asleep and I was dying trying not to laugh and wake everyone up

Also I find it very funny that the video game was like “yeah Gordon so I’m gonna trap you here for 6 years and leave your entire family to wonder if you’re dead and slowly take all of your memories one by one until you forget even your sons name” but then it realizes he’s trans and is like “oh wait. I gotta hook him up with T tho.” LMAO

I also liked the genuine mystery of not knowing if that’s Benreys Gordon or not. Like, I had kinda a feeling but there were so many red herrings that it was genuinely a shock to find out that he had been finger spelling Joshua!! The twists!! The turns!! And it makes perfect sense that Benrey wouldn’t recognize Gordon after 6 years of being fucked up by a haunted video game, T, and depression!! My man’s tortured!! And the idea of the game slowly replacing Gordon’s memories with Gordon Freeman’s makes SO much sense oh my GOD

The fact that Gordon became physically less and less human over this time makes so much sense too. I mean bro has been exposed to so much Xen radiation and shit over the years it’s a miracle bro didn’t grow a third arm

Benreys struggle of trying to keep the fact that nothing is real from the ai was also so interesting?? Like everyone had such an interesting arc over the course of the story it was just so well written holy shit!!

POOR JOSHUA!! My little man got his bio dad taken away from him and now his other one- the chapters centered around him broke my fucking HEART. I wanna see him get reunited with them again so bad but I get not being able to finish the fic, life gets in the way you know and honestly it’s impressive you were able to write as much as you did!! You wrote a fucking novel-length fanfic with interesting plot, characters, and story completely for free??? Like what the hell?? You’re incredible and I hope ur proud of your work!!

I've been binge reading all of your fics and I just wanna say thank you for the following things:

1. Thank you for occasionally calling the Night Court out on their shit. I love them a lot but they can be very problematic at times and I appreciate that you're writing is very aware of that.

2. I came for Elain and Lucien and I stayed for Arina and Eris. For real, I went into them simply for Elucien content and it was such a nice surprise that you gave Eris a lot of love too. I'm first and foremost an Eris apologist and he deserves all the love and happiness he can get after 5 centuries of utter bullshit. Thank you for giving him that. I absolutely ADORE Arina and as far as I'm concerned she's a canon character. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing more of the two of them in the future, if maybe you wanted to write more of them...

(also I really love what you do with Helion and LOA and Lucien too, we really need a wholeass Autumn Court book for the drama, but until then, thank you for proving sheer unbridled chaos)

3. Finally I want to say a huge thank you for your version of Elucien. Holy shit. They have such an interesting relationship and a lot of potential that needs to be explored and you do this SO WELL. No matter what story you're writing, whether it's an AU or different events in the canon world, you really know how to tug on the heart strings with their relationships. They offer the perfect combination of angst and fluff and humour and you always create the best dynamic for them.

There's a lot more that I could say, but lastly, I really look forward to whatever you're working on next... And thank you for your service to the Elucien shippers and the Vanserra Brothers Support Squad. Mad respect. You're the best❤️

hello hello so vivi [@astrofireworks] came to me a few weeks ago with a prompt/fic idea she had nd i really liked it so here it is in bullet fic form vivi i hope i did your idea justice: 

okay so basically jinjin and mj have been dating since their first year of university

they met when jinjin accidentally walked into a first year chemistry class when he was trying to find his philosophy class

and when he realized he was in the wrong class he was too awkward to leave so he stayed and missed his very first university class ever

cue stressed jinjin basically just sitting there the entire hour long introduction, not listening at all 

and at the end of lecture mj tries to take the advice their professor just gave, and he talks to the kid next to him and asks for his contact info in case either of them ever miss lecture for whatever reason then they can trade notes

jinjin: “i’m uhh... i’m not in this class.... haha”

mj: “.......????”

jinjin: “i actually walked into the wrong classroom and i felt weird leaving, haha” he’s trying so hard to laugh it off but he’s internally dying a bit [a lot]

and mj is like “:oo dude that sucks but i get it, i probably would’ve been too awkward to leave too.” 

and after that they part ways and jinjin gets totally roasted by his roommate eunwoo bc he’s a whole idiot and he can’t believe he did that

but after that mj and jinjin keep running into each other everywhere

jinjin goes to the library to study? mj is a table over also studying

jinjin and eunwoo go to a party? mj is at that party

jinjin and eunwoo go to eat? mj is also there, sitting just down the table from them, eating with a couple of his friends as well

so eventually they just start talking nd cracking jokes bc they ALWAYS see each other and they’re like “haha the universe is trying to put us together”

and after some time, jinjin finds himself crushing on this super cute and sweet and funny dude he accidentally sat beside in the wrong lecture and so he asks him out

and he’s kinda expecting mj to say no bc he’s been on a few dates here and there with this guy in his chemistry class named moon bin

but mj’s like “finally you idiot i’ve been waiting for you to ask me out for forever”

and jinjin’s like “why didn’t you just ask me then????”

and mj’s like “.......... i don’t actually know??” and they’re both shook bc what an idiot but it’s okay bc one of them asked the other now

and they go on a date to a bowling alley and have a ton of fun and mj pouts when he loses but jinjin just smiles at him really big and kisses him on the cheek so it’s all good

and after that they’re pretty much inseparable and they start officially dating a little while later and they’ve been together ever since then

so skip a few years later and mj’s pursuing his Ph.D. and as part of his program he has the opportunity to do a co-op abroad

and obviously he takes it bc why wouldn’t he but it leaves poor jinjin on his own for six months while he’s gone

and obviously he’s super proud of mj bc it’s really awesome but also he’s sad bc the love of his life is gonna be away from him for six months

and he can’t tell mj anything but jinjin’s secretly been planning on proposing to him on their sixth anniversary for almost a year but now mj’ll be away for it

and he’s got a ring picked out and everything and he’s got it hidden in the pocket of this old backpack he has from when he was in university that’s sitting in a closet in their apartment

so mj packs all his stuff up and he needs a carry-on and so he takes the backpack and packs all his carry-on stuff in it and somehow jinjin doesn’t realize that this is the bag until after he’s dropped mj off for his flight and they’ve said their goodbye’s and he’s on his way home

and when he realizes he’s like “shit what have i done” and he’s freaking out and he doesn’t even go back to his apartment but rather to eunwoo’s and he’s losing his mind bc mj’s gonna find the fucking ring shit [and that’s if he hasn’t found it already]

and eunwoo just kinda looks at him like “you’ve always been an idiot when it comes to mj haven’t you?”

and jinjin’s like “this isn’t the time, idiot, what do i do?”

and eunwoo’s like “uhh how the heck should i know??”

and so amidst his freaking out they come up with a plan that they think actually isn’t that bad [it is] and basically jinjin’s gonna casually tell mj not to look in that specific pouch bc eunwoo’s hiding something in there that he doesn’t want ppl to see and then move on with it

so when mj calls him from toronto, where he’s doing his co-op, that night he’s like “!!! jinjin hi i made it safely”

jinjin: “i know, you texted me when you landed and when you got to your hotel”

mj: “i know but idk i wanted you to hear me say it not text it”

jinjin: “you’re so cute i love you”

and mj’s like “stop” and he’s blushing even though they’ve been together 5ever and also jinjin can’t even SEE him

jinjin, lowkey smug: “are you blushing rn??”

mj: “shut up park jinwoo >:/“

and jinjin calls him cute again before they get to talking about their days and what happened after jinjin dropped mj off and then he’s just randomly like

“oh btw eunwoo says he’s got something secret stashed in the left pocket of my backpack but he really doesn’t want us to check it so can you like..... not open that??”

and that’s literally the most sus thing mj has ever heard like first of all why would eunwoo randomly have something hidden in there that they don’t know about

second of all how does he even know mj took the backpack

so he’s like “wtf what’s in the backpack” and he goes into that pouch of the backpack while jinjin shouts in his ear to stop bc eunwoo rlly doesn’t want them to look

and he finds the ring and he tears up and nearly starts crying bc “holy shit jinjin’s gonna fucking propose to me”

and he loves jinjin so much and is literally thrilled by the idea of being married to him so he’s actually really really happy

but he doesn’t want jinjin to know he’s found it bc obviously he’s not supposed to know so he’s like “????? it’s nothing but an empty pouch in your shitty old backpack???”

and jinjin’s like “....... OH ofc he must’ve been talking about a different bag haha”

and part of him is RELIEVED bc mj doesn’t know but the other half is like “holy fuck the ring is supposed to be in there i lost a $4000 ring what the fuck”

so time passes and mj doesn’t tell jinjin he knows but while he’s away he wears the engagement ring 25/8 bc it’s so beautiful and he loves it and loves jinjin and wants ppl to know that he’s engaged [even if he technically hasn’t said yes yet]

and when he finally gets to go back home he just kinda forgets that he’s supposed to put the ring back bc he’s so used to wearing it and he keeps it on during the flight home

and he gets home and sees jinjin waiting for him once he gets to the baggage claim and he’s like “!!!!!!! jinjin” and he’s so so happy bc the love of his life is right there after six months

jinjin: “!!! baby !! i love you i missed you !!”

mj: “i missed you too!!”

and jinjin goes to take his hand to lead them to the belt where his luggage will come off and it’s then that he noticed mj is wearing a ring and he’s like “???? mj doesn’t have a ring”

so he looks a little closer and chokes bc that’s not just a ring that’s the ring

jinjin: “mj wtf you found the ring?!”

mj: “........ fuck i forgot to take it off i wanted to surprise you before i said yes :(“

jinjin, v shook: “b-before you said yes??”

nd mj’s just smiling so big and he throws his arms around jinjin’s neck again and he’s like “jinjin i love you to the moon and back obviously i’m gonna marry you”

and jinjin is kinda sad that the proposal didn’t go how he wanted but he’s also so so happy rn bc he loves mj and that makes him not rlly care about the proposal so he just hugs him really really tightly and tells mj how much he loves him and how much he means to him

but park jinwoo is also a huge sap so he still gets on one knee in the middle of the literal airport and asks mj to marry him and mj is so flustered bc a ton of people are watching

so he shyly says yes again and hugs jinjin so so tight and they kiss nd people are clapping bc this is a literal airport and it’s highkey awkward and mj just starts killing himself laughing at the whole situation

mj: “you’re actually a whole idiot i wouldn’t have checked the pouch at all if you hadn’t said anything”

jinjin: “yeah but i’ve always been kinda dumb whenever you’re involved, you make me unable to think clearly; in a good way though”

nd mj just scrunches his nose at him with a smile and tells him he’s a sap before kissing him once more

they collect mj’s luggage hand in hand and a few months later they get married and jinjin tells the story in his speech at the reception and it makes everyone laugh

and yeah it was kinda dumb but mj honestly couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out

he’s literally useless he can barely walk

he knows mutt wants to ride corr so might as well get rid of sean

He pays for the medical bills as a “my sons a dick and i can’t believe he wrecked my biggest money-maker” sort of gesture and then puts him out of work

Dory Maud naturally takes him in because she has a thing for helpless orphans. 

he works the till until he can walk again and then he stocks shelves

one fateful afternoon a couple weeks after he got the job Puck comes in with an armful of teapots and can’t see where shes going and runs right into Seans arms because i love tropes thats why

all the pots shatter 

Puck is PISSED

she did not spend hours painting her signature on dozens of tiny pots for them to all go to waste

So naturally she starts telling him off 

and sean can’t stop looking at her because wow she’s turning really red is that natural 

and also she’s pretty when she’s mad 

a.k.a. she’s always pretty but whatever

so sean immediately starts apologizing and then offers to help her carry the rest of the pots in

they go outside and Dove nickers at Puck from where shes tied and suddenly Seans whole body just aches with wanting because holy shit he misses Corr so much

he just kinda stands there and stares at Dove for a hot minute

he hasn’t left the shop since he started working and hasn’t seen a horse in 5ever

it’s very slow going and sean wants to scream sometimes because everything hurts and he still can’t really ride.

He starts riding dove with Pucks help but everyday he misses corr more and more

Puck decides they should go visit but sean explains that he doesn’t own Corr and if Mutt sees him then he’ll be a little shit

And pucks like screw him we’ll go after dark then

SO. It’s after midnight and they’re riding dove together to malverns because they might need a quick getaway

and he sees Corr after months apart

Corr has clearly missed him

He’s under weight and losing muscle from not being worked.

His feet are all chewed up because he’s been pawing and kicking so much because he hasn’t been let out of his stall

Sean wants to throw up and Puck wants to fight malvern

the next day she applies for a job (they still haven’t filled seans spot) 

now that she’s there she makes sure Corr gets worked and fed properly and sneaks sean up during the day to see him

they’re saving money to try to buy back the house but puck sees how much not having Corr around is killing sean even though he won’t say anything.

even with Finns Palssons job, seans job at Fathom and Sons and Pucks job at Malverns, AND the teapots, they’re barely making the payments and keeping food on the table. theres no way they can buy Corr. 

Puck has a long conversation with Finn and then a longer one with Malvern and they sell the house in exchange for Corr. 

He’s not much use to him anymore because no one can ride him and even with pucks work, he’s not really in racing shape anymore (he also has no idea that sean lives with Puck so that helps)

Malverns a petty bitch ok

they begin to help sean fix up his fathers house with the pretense of kicking him out.

they decide to christen the fixed up house with dinner and on the inside sean is dreading it because he loves the little makeshift family that they’ve made and doesn’t know how he’ll cope and the fact that he’ll be alone again.

also he loves puck a whole lot and wants to spend every spare second with her

when they get to his house Corr is waiting in the barn and puck tells him that they’re relocating is all

sean kisses puck for a solid 2 minutes and her face is as red as it was when they first met.

It was hard, but after gabe leaving, the house contained too many memories and it was time for them to make their own future, free from their parents gloomy shadows. 

this house is closer to the sea anyway

sean still can’t really ride corr for a couple more months.

but when he does finally get on, him and puck ride down to the beach.

he never has to want puck to love Corr because she loves sean and Corr made him who he is.

2017 in review

I always say that I’m going to post a “how my year was” at the end of the year, but I have an awful memory so I never remember what happened in each month. This year, I tried to post about each month as it finished- the good and the bad. Under a cut because of course it got long, and I never seem to post about my real life, so this may be boring if you don’t actually know me.

January

Got a snow day after having students for just one day

Accidentially read a book in one night (Perfect) because of aforementioned snow day/borrowing it electronically from the library/not knowing how many pages there were (not that many since it’s YA)

Got two more snow/ice days because my county has mountains in it and we’re in the South, so we’re not prepared for winter

Saw Hidden Figures and cried about how good humanity can be when we actually allow and encourage all people to be their best (black women!!!! they did that!!!!!!!)

Helped my students navigate our county’s program of going one-to-one with Chromebooks (there were many good things, such as getting my kids to play freerice for extra credit; there were many bad things, such as a quiz getting screwed up because I shuffled the questions but had asked my co-teacher to help me by reading the quiz [as she normally does] to a half dozen students...who all had a different order of questions...).

Went to a conference for new teachers and while a lot of the information was repetitive, there were a few things I got from it (such as 6.5 professional development hours aw yis).

Got to see lots of family I don’t usually see on this weekend!

Started reading The Diary of Anne Frank with my students because this country allowed fascism to be A Thing™ and I’m going to resist however I can.

Got two (!!!!!!) days off at the end of January for sick days (apparently other students in the county? not us but we benefitted!!!!)

February

Finally had an entire 5-day week of school

Then got another two days off for sickness (8th grade was doing our part by asking ENTIRE classes “Hey! Anyone feel sick? Anyone want to go get their temp checked???”)

Went to an open house at a local mosque, and y’all, I live in The South™ but their parking lot filled up a good 15 minutes before the event even started and there was an overflow room and so much support for this community during the Muslim Ban and it just filled my heart with joy

Got a haircut (it was literally down to my butt y’all!!!!) and now it’s right below my shoulders

Had pedal extensions installed in my car because I’m 4′9 and would have literally died if the airbags went off.

March

Got my professional teaching license! I’m no longer an apprentice! I don’t have to have 4 observations a year!!! Only 2! And while I’m REALLY good at playing the observation game (and am MUCH better at this than the testing game), it will be nice to not think about it so much.

My mom came to stay for a few days because it was her and my sister’s spring break.

During that week, I had a LONG 4 day week, which included staying at my school until 7:30 for a town hall meeting/carnival/extravaganza. F U N.

My spring break was purposefully low-key. I rested a lot, read books, caught up on Netflix, shopped at Old Navy, and went to the local art museum for the first time (I’ve only been in this city for 8 years...)

April

I found that I actually enjoy teaching how to write an essay. The 5 paragraph essay, while it has many faults, is a really good place for beginning writers (which 8th graders are) to begin. I had a student tell me that she liked how I made each sentence have a specific purpose because she was able to plug in her evidence and thoughts more easily- this honestly made my whole day.

That being said, I HATE teaching essays when students are absent. Trying to get them caught up and keep everyone else on track is SO MUCH WORK. Especially when the absent students don’t come to me during my plan to make up their work...

For two whole days, my last period class was not allowed to use erasers because some people (two boys, as it turned out) were shredding and throwing them at each other.

I turned 26

The Welcome to Night Vale Live Show FINALLY TRAVELED TO TENNESSEE AND Y’ALL CECIL (REAL CECIL NOT THE CHARACTER) IS FROM KNOXVILLE!!!! The weather singer was super fun (she played Rocky Top and we ate that shit up like biscuits and gravy with no shame whatsoever) and the show itself was just so much fun even though I went alone. It was almost an hour of normal segments with the plot of the glow cloud, but they also brought in Steve Carlsburg and Tamika Flynn (I diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiied when she walked on stage because I majorly crush on that actress whoops) and watching those actors interact on stage was so much fun.

End of the school year is always chaotic and better left forgotten tbh

We took the 8th graders to the local theme park, and it was really good (though my expectations were super low because last year’s trip SUCKED). The weather looked like it might rain, but it was nice all day, the kids were pretty good, and the rides were fun.

There were some really sad community deaths around this time :(

The teacher who normally MCs the 8th grade commencement is now an administrator, so while we still had him open the ceremony, I gave out several of the awards, and I don’t think I did a bad job (two of the other teachers hate public speaking and the last one was new to the team this year, so I was really the only choice).

June

Worked my church’s festival, which is always fun. The crowds are never what they ought to be (due to a combination of rain threats and poor marketing), so a lot of people missed out on some really great food and music.

Great music included a new band- Southern Avenue- that I got to see again later in the year.

I had to miss the third day of the festival because of a friend’s baby shower. I knew a few people (besides the couple), but they left early; luckily, the people throwing it were a lot of fun. We played games (don’t get caught saying “baby”; pin the sperm on the egg; etc) and decorated diapers/onesies/bibs for the baby). The next day, we went to church (IN A MOTHERFUCKING MONSOON) and for Mexican food.

Started my reread of Harry Potter (it had been about 5 years since I’d last read the series). I cried in almost every book, and not always at sad parts. I’ve become very protective of Harry as I’ve gotten older.

My younger brother found an NES, which was the console I grew up with and my parents gave away years ago. They really loved to play on it, so this was a wedding anniversary present for them. The Legend of Zelda is the shit.

I finally got a new phone (I’d had mine about 3 years, and it died in May) and I know it’s fun for iphone users to shit on Android users, but I really do love the camera quality on my Samsung.

I bought Pokemon yellow because I never played/watched it as a kid, and while at my house for the summer, I found the old black & white gameboy an older cousin gave me, so naturally I had to do it.

You know what once I was back in town I went to my favorite library almost every day for an hour or two and read while opening Pokemon Go every few minutes so there

Went with some of my best friends to visit another one of our best friends who lives in the middle of fucking nowhere and had adventures including, but not limited to: getting pizza because we were too weak to change out the gas’s grill, waiting 5ever for food at dinner, and watching the entire Flowers in the Attic series.

August

School started back up, and at the kick-off for all the teachers, I won $500 in a drawing of all the people who hadn’t used a sick day last year!!!!!

And I didn’t even realize that I’d won $200 at the previous school board meeting in the same type drawing!!!!

New class started off with 85 students. It was a DREAM to be able to focus on individuals and not just herd cats.

I actually felt more confident in the classroom with my early units (poetry & our whole class novel).

Still felt confident in the classroom!

I got my testing scores back from the previous year (this shit takes 5ever and it’s dumb) and did better in about the only way I could have, so that was good to see.

I had about 10 county people in my classroom (principals, academic coaches, etc) to see a certain style of teaching ELA that the county is working on. It’s basically making sure that teachers keep students engaged in complex text (which is what I do almost every day anyway) and I had been to two of these trainings already, so I knew what sort of lesson worked. Well...they LOVED it!!! The kids were in small groups and did SO GOOD discussing evidence/answering questions (they all got candy afterwards) and I got some good feedback about how I talk to my students. Then that same day the superintendent came in my room (one of several rooms he visited while doing his yearly observation on the principal). That visit was super unannounced, but still fine.

The academic coach got rid of my classroom’s desks and found tables and chairs instead!!!! My classroom is tiny and weird shaped, so this works SO MUCH BETTER.

I help coach volleyball (aka I keep the books) and the girls won district (beating out a team with a redneck grandma in the stands who literally came up to our girls and yelled at them for cheering on their own damn team in the previous game). They didn’t do so well at sectionals, but that’s ok.

October

Holy shit I won another $200 in that drawing!!! And this time my parents let me buy them plane tickets so we could see family over Christmas.

Got to see a lot of family at my cousin’s ‘wedding party’ (he got married last year in Europe since he met his now wife over there, and wanted to have a family party here). I learned that my uncle and his son dance exactly the same at the same level of alcohol.

November

I should have known something was up when my first 9 weeks went so well. Apparently my county is in the bottom tier for the state, and now everyone is freaking out (never mind that the data to support this was mONTHS LATE AND BASED ON STANDARDIZED TESTS WHICH WERE A CLUSTERFUCK TO BEGIN WITH) so there was a lot of school stress during this time.

Nice things though- got to see friends when their baby was baptized and went home for Thanksgiving, where my dad came into the Catholic Church.

I organized most of the 8th grade field trip for the semester- going to see “A Christmas Carol” put on by my old college’s theatre. I was stressed the entire time because if something went wrong it would be on ME, but it was absolutely wonderful and I cried which honestly surprised me. We went to the local mall for our lunch and it was good to see the kids just relax. It was a great field trip and several people including the principal thanked me for my hard work which felt great after a hard month.

School was nothing but survival mode per usual.

Hosted the Christmas party for my friend group at church and it was a lot of fun.

The actual break was fast- we flew to Texas with one of my mom’s sisters and her family to visit their brother and his family. I hadn’t been to Texas since high school, so it was fun to explore and eat good food.

My final count for books was 93 (67 new and 26 reread) (I’m trying to finish an audiobook I’m borrowing from the library but I still have 80 minutes left and literally 4 hours to finish it so we’ll see!!!).

weird i love this show

in watching some of these eps for the first time i really enjoy seeing the doc do shit that i’ve had them do in fanfic and then clearly it was done on the show but i didn’t know that bc i haven’t actaully seen all of it? idk it makes me feel very much on the right wavelength even though making the doc build a sciency contraption out of household objects in their bedroom is not that hard of thing to guess the doc would do

the doc trying to be human is always a+ content

can we please use that telepathic trick again where he just knocks his head into craig’s bc that is top tier and i like to think that whenever the doc gets impatient they could just have that in their back pocket

i’m sorry the doc doesn’t have another name for the football team but introduces himself as captain troy handsome to the ship without hesitation

the episode was Good like i feel like there are a lot of takes on Nightmares and fear in this show but this actually felt really refreshing and interesting and not all rehashed

there are too many good moments craig and 11 r underrated and i probably ignored them in high school bc i was too distracted by when we were going to see river next

the scene with 9 and the dalek is SO good like the reveal in the dark immediately into 9′s absolute viciousness and hatred and taunting and the no holds barred violence just holy shit eccleston

they did such a great job making the dalek truly terrifying

no offensive to classic who but daleks and cybermen r just not actually that scary by themselves they absolutely have to connect them to what they stand for

any actually canon relationship with the doc is an entire hour long sub-section in my Let 13 Kiss a Girl powerpoint

that ending is such cheese with the doc lighting the olympic flame and only this stupid show could make me still feel something with that because it’s so brazen and so doctor who
