bonjour cy-lindric, j'ai une petite question. when I was a young person, I read The Three Musketeers and then eagerly started to read Twenty Years After and was so upset at what had happened to my beloved young heroes that I put the book down and never picked it up. what do you think, should I try again?
Bonjour !
After reading The Three Musketeers, I also wasn't sure I wanted to read Twenty Years After, and I took a break inbetween both to read something entirely different (The Locked Tomb, iirc). I think my reason for that was kind of the opposite of yours ; I enjoyed T3M a lot and loved the characters, flaws and all, but by the end they had somewhat crossed over the line into being Too Awful and the lack of retribution left me a bit frustrated. I didn't see it as a failing of the story - on the contrary, their strong character flaws and downfall in the conflict with Milady is one of the most emotionally intense and compelling parts imo - but I wasn't sure I felt like hanging out with these guys for a few hundred more pages at that point.
If your vision of the characters as a young reader was a very positive and perhaps idealized one, I can imagine why you might not have enjoyed entering into Twenty Years after. The illusion of glory has worn off ; the characters have separated, they live unremarkable lives, and their personalities have evolved drastically with the passing of time. It's almost a brutal return to reality.
For me though, it added layers of characterization to the point where now it's clear to me that this version of the Inseparables is by far the one I prefer.
I hope it's ok if I take the opportunity to talk at length about what I like about TYA below the cut. TL;DR : I love that Twenty Years After is a more realistic look at the big four's personalities and how they evolved while still keeping them thematically coherent, and that TYA makes them confront the reckless and cruel shit they did in their youth.
Spoilers ahead obviously.
We've often talked about how T3M is at its core a story about the end of knighthood. It's a tongue-in-cheek approach at chivalrous initiation, set at edge of the modern world, inbetween the time of ballads about knights in armor and that of adventures about journeying gunmen and soldiers. I think TYA embodies that particularly ; the story of people who have carried the last of these intense, dangerous chivalric ideals in their youths, and who have now grown into middle aged adults who need to find their place in the world.
For a good chunk of the book, the big four are separated into two teams ; that in of itself might discourage some, but imo it's genius. Instead of the natural two-by-pairings, Dumas goes for a d'Artagnan+ Porthos and Athos + Aramis split on opposite sides, which makes for good drama and develops lesser explored dynamics. D'Artagnan and Porthos form a scrappy team of opportunists with money on their minds, and Athos and Aramis a more idealistic duo fighting for a noble lost cause. I think it's a bold choice but also premium sequel writing.
I also love the way the young and wild characters we knew evolve into middle aged men ; at their core, they're still the same, but they've all changed and struggled against the sunset of the golden age in their own ways.
D'Artagnan, after knowing such adventures and subsequent rapid social ascension in his teenage years, has been met in his adult life with the harsh reality that he is, in fact, not a noble knight but a soldier on payroll. His modest origins give him little hope for any further career advancement, and he takes on a new mission in his early 40s for a man he has no devotion for and a cause he doesn't care about, simply because he is bored and broke. D'Artagnan still has his quick wits, his strategic talent, his fencing skills, but he has grown out of the excesses of pride of his teenage years. I loved meeting him again in TYA, and it made so much sense to me that his bouts of anger and aggressivity would be a youthful trait that he'd ended up taming. He also realizes now a lot of what seemed like funny adventures and necessary violence was actually kind of fucked up ; that was a shock to me, as their shenanigans are treated so lightly in T3M, and tbh it healed me a little. Grown up d'Artagnan is cunning, calculating, down to earth and realistic. My foxy little man. I love him.
Porthos, likewise, has been struck by the weight of reality. He has made the sensible choice and got married to the rich widow who sugar mommied him in the first book. Now she's passed, he is rich, but he still fails to earn the respect of the high society he evolves in because he's not high born enough. Like d'Artagnan, he's stagnating and bored and now that he goes back adventuring it has nothing to do with the queen or the kingdom or honour ; it's about getting his damn nobility title.
Athos, on the other hand, is the eternal knight : the only truly high born of the four, and still hopelessly holding on to a time gone by. It's no surprise imo that his storyline brings him into the english civil war, doomed to fail at saving a king who'll end up executed right in front of him. TYA acknowledges more clearly than ever that at 28 yo, Athos was a depressed alcoholic, and an embodiment of what an excess of aristocratic righteousness can do. In TYA, he is sober and moisturized and a DILF, and now he's running around frantically looking for absolution for his numerous crimes. It's delicious.
Aramis is maybe the hardest pill to swallow. TYA confirms the T3M hints that he isn't really the prim and proper romantic boy he acts like he is, and that he's possibly the most hypocritical and ruthless of the four. It might be a harsh one for Aramis fans who like him better as a cute bean, but I love the early onset of remorseless conniving bloodthirsty ambitious Aramis. Another harsh bit might be the evolution of Aramis and d'Artagnan not really liking each other ; they were always the least close combination, and imo it makes sense that their personalities would clash. I think it's clever and compelling conflict.
Now, obviously, if you've cared enough to read all this and if you know me a little, you know that a huge highlight of the book for me was its late-appearing antagonist, Mordaunt. Mordaunt is the son Milady had with her english husband. Because of the Musketeers' intervention, he's grown up in poverty and has been denied his father's inheritance. He's now a Roundhead working for Cromwell, and set on avenging his mother at all costs. Mordaunt, unlike his mother who was this beautiful and dangerous force of nature, is very uncool and pathetic. She was the primordial snake, he's the gutter rat. Obviously, I love that in and of itself, but it's also kind of striking image of the wretchedness of what they've done to her, a fucked up little goblin ghost come back to haunt them as they're trying to make their life worth living again. This time, their enemy is not a cunning political rival with a flamboyance of body and mind akin to their own ; it's a shitty little guy with bad skin who wants to kill the king and punish the murderers. Watch out babes, it's the modern world coming for you.
Of course, they're the Four Musketeers, and they did what they had to do, so they get together again and swear friendship and keep going their way. But they're also old guys with difficult personalities in a world that's never going to be the same. I think it's a cool book.

I am now thinking more about the Jurassic Park/World - Animorphs crossover AU (Dinomorphs?). It has stuck in my head like a bad song and I can't get it out.
InGen and any of the other companies involved with making the dinosaurs would be taken over by the Yeerks almost as soon as the Yeerks arrive. These companies have biological engineering capabilities approaching the level of the Arn, but on a much better planet. The Yeerks would be salivating over that.
Following on from this: Hybrid dinosaurs like the Indo-series Rex and Raptor or the Stegoceratops from the video games are probably Yeerk projects. The Yeerks are looking for ways to create more shock troops to unleash on the Andalites.
Similarly, we could expect to see even more interesting hybrids involving alien DNA. Velocihorks and Pterotaxxons and Geddosaurs. I imagine most of these hybrid projects would be failures that illustrate the depravity and utter inhumanity of the Yeerks, like the failed Aquatic Hork-Bajir project.
Dinosaur-controllers, mostly with medium-sized dinosaurs that can function as guards or shock-troops but aren't too big to fit inside of Yeerk ships. As much as Visser Three would love to have Tyrannosaur-Controllers on the payroll, they're just too big and their arms too tiny to be useful to the Empire on a day to day basis. (I imagine this is the same reason the Yeerks can't deploy the giant monsters on the Hork-Bajir homeworld to other planets - their spaceships just can't hold the critters, there's not enough room.)
Visser Three, of course, would have all the big dinosaur morphs. He can bypass the "too big to fit" limitation thanks to Alloran's morphing ability.
Because the Yeerks have to use smaller dinosaurs in their ships and Yeerk Pools, the Animorphs could still use their regular battle morphs (or in Ax's case, his normal Andalite body) for a lot of the fighting, if they aren't able to acquire dinosaurs themselves. And if Visser Three turns into something too big for them to handle, they can do what they usually do and run.
If the dinosaurs have escaped into the wild before the Animorphs get into the war, then smaller dinosaur morphs could be acquired at Cassie's barn.
Following on from the last point - if Cassie has any mid-size theropods at the Barn, or if there are any at The Gardens, then Tobias definitely gets stuck as one of those instead of a hawk.
How would the chimeric DNA of the dinosaurs affect morphing allergies? What if Rachel burps up a Baryonyx or an Ankylosaurus because it has the part of the crocodile DNA that she's allergic to in it? Is this how we find out Jake is allergic to Tree Frog DNA?
Toby and the Free Hork-Bajir adopt a dinosaur early on. I don't know what kind yet.

realized i havent posted here much so, umm,
who wants to hear about my blu team headcanons ^__^ this is just my rundown of how they work, what they're like, and even weapon loadouts
Tumblr media
ok so im going to roll with the teams being clones, but i dont want to make any sort of drama to be just about that, like that whole existential dread of being a clone thing. its been done to death and i have nothing new to say for it (besides, i'd assume the inital cloning process was years ago when they just got hired, by now the novelty would of worn off and weirder stuff would of happened for them to even care or worry about that.) so what i'm thinking is that there's no way everyone would have the exact same experiences after they get cloned, so everyone just splits off into their own paths and they become their own individuals almost. and interacting with themselves from the other teams isnt "oh thats literally me :(" but more so "oh thats literally me and i need to be better than him >:(" so theres always this bit of competition between everyone; an infinite loop of anything you can do i can do better.
as for everyone individually...... (i'll also throw in a ⭐ for whoever is the "master copy" of themselves)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu scout: short stop / mad milk / stock bat
accidental honorary delivery boy. when miss pauling is busy with the actually important work, admin sends this scout around the teufort area to send out weapons and other mann co. products. red scout sees him as a bit of a poser poster child and they butt heads often, especially when red scout is off-shift while blu is making deliveries.
blu soldier: rocket jumper / b.a.s.e. jumper / market gardener
if not maybe a bit more of a conspiracy nut and more compliant to the company, i guess the most similar to his original version? can't beat perfection i guess, not a lot of notes here but they probably bite each other for fun.
blu pyro: decreaser / shotgun / neon annihilator
not visually different or note worthy either, but whatever she and red pyro have is unspoken, vicious, and brutal. they will tear each other limb by limb anytime they're in proximity. definitely another reason that fuels most of the team's fear towards them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu demo ⭐: iron bomber / scottish resistance/ nessie's nine iron
strategic, cool, and a bit of a schemer. a real master at his craft with sticky bombs and planning traps. red demo actually likes him but blu HATES him since he (red) got the eyelander and he (himself) didn't, so he's very bitter towards him (wow this is confusing.)
blu heavy: tomslav / family business / eviction notice
goes missing from base a lot, no one knows why. he seems to be doing illegal assassin work both inside and out of company payroll. both heavies actually are in contact often and blu gives a good chunk, if not all, of what he makes to him. i'd assume any of the clones visiting anywhere outside of the immediate tuefort area would be problematic and would have restrictions to prevent two of the exact same person from walking around in the world at once, so blu heavy lets his other self take it so long as it goes directly to his mom and sisters. if he can't visit them personally, at least him knowing they're stable financially and doing well is more than enough for him.
blu engineer ⭐: rescue ranger / wrangler / wrench
the dell conagher, enough said. he's the most in contact with admin behind miss pauling for her own purposes. he'd rather not think about his red counterpart, but i will say that this version does not have the gunslinger. that was all red engineer post-cloning. but he does have the only australiam tool between both teams so it balances out maybe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu medic ⭐: overdose / vaccinator / solemn vow
he thinks hes dr fritz ludwig from emesis blue 🤣🤣🤣 tries VERY hard to be a cold collected scientist but ends up being more neurotic and jumpy. screams a lot. actually maybe dislikes his team? and loathes his own red copy for actually trying (who btw (red) is having a great time knowing his existence is an abomination to god, its even an affirmation he tells himself in a mirror.)
blu sniper: huntsman / razorback / kukri
ironically one of the few blu team members that actually stay put in the base. he doesnt call his folks as per aforementioned restrictions, but he has no beef with his red counterpart for that. the worst they do is get extremely competitive; theyre at the top of their game and even have stand offs of just aiming for hours until someone flinches.
blu spy ⭐: revolver / black rose / dead ringer / red-tape recorder
the man, the myth, the legend. more carefree and unserious than red spy, thats partially because he doesn't know about scout's relation to him. red spy found that out post-cloning, he's missing that one bit or character development that makes him a more mature and cold mercenary, but at this moment he's none the wiser. so aside from expected spy vs. spy shenanigans, their conflict is a bit more deeply rooted. he actually visits the red base a LOT, to only a few people's knowledge. makes a lot of long tangents.

"Y'all ever going to get around to proving man has an effect on climate, or are we just supposed to take it on faith?" I mean they have proved it. They've done so quite a lot. There is mountains of evidence proving that very thing. It's just ignored because it goes against the narrative of climate change being a myth and instead y'all suck on the cocks of the oil and coal industries saying that they're fine.
And yet, despite this so-called proof, literally zero of the apocalyptic predictions based off that proof have come true. Almost like it's all bullshit and they're just throwing out data that fits into the conclusion they've already drawn due to political and financial motivations. You cultists love claiming that skeptics are on the payroll of the oil industry, but ignore how the entire field of "climate science" is being bankrolled by politicians, government agencies, and special interest groups that all have a vested interest in man made global warming being real and an imminent emergency. But I guess the same people and organizations that constantly lie about everything are telling the truth and supporting The Science because they just care about humanity and the planet ever so much. We'll just ignore that every single proposed "solution" to "climate change" would do exactly nothing to reduce global carbon emissions, which is the boogeyman you people hold up as the only cause of bad weather.

Mo Tuxuan is a character I haven't figured out as much on, but I have decided him literally being Mobei-jun reincarnated is funny so i'm rolling with it.
He was set up in a cold and distant home to be reborn in, professional, educated, powerful....kind of like being the royal family, but not quite. He was basically predestined to be the head of North Kingdom industries from the start and his entire life has been rearranged to that end. He's a little disappointed, his second life is almost the same as his first...but he's not technically royalty, and he's not a demon. Very little else has changed.
And then he's at a meeting with the CEO of another company and he encounters an account manager by the name of Shang Qingshui who seems off put by him but not....scared. Well, yes, scared, but not in the feeble sheep-like way most office workers are. He's carried his demon king aura and attitude with him, and it intimidates almost everyone he encounters. Qingshui immediately recognizes the aura and bristles bc there's NO WAY Mobei-jun is here, he CAN'T be this unlucky he'll just do his job and get out of the CEO's hair and maybe if he stonewalls the man he won't try to pull him back in.
Except Mo Tuxuan is so amazed there's a human who can stand up to him and casually disregard him he's actually kind of obsessed now. He needs to talk to that man more. He looks at Tuxuan like he's a WORM. No one else does that, no one else even dares to look at him like that. Everyone else looks up at him and cowers, Shang Qingshui looks up at him and narrows his eyes and digs in his heels.
Meanwhile on Qingshui's end, after his very first interaction with the man he sincerely hopes is not actually Mobei-jun because if he was that would be really fucked up right, he receives a message from the System announcing that he's just gained 1000 B Points! Quest line unlocked- North Kingdom Industries! What even, how did this happen. He was hoping being rude would make him not want to interact with him ever again. Instead, every time he does business with their company he insists that he be assisted by Shang Qingshui.
"Are you sure, sir? He's...just an accounts manager, not an assistant or anything." "Which accounts does he handle?" ".....payroll...." "I am interested in acquiring accounts from your company, I'll need to see how the payroll will function. I will require his help."
Shen Tianyu watching the whole thing playing out: "I think he's smitten with you something fierce. Remember how I looked back when Lianhua started coming around back in college?" "Or how Binghe looks at you...all the time?" "Yeah. That's how he looks at you." "....I am actively trying to bully him into leaving me alone." "I guess that's his kink." "Gross." "You're into it, though, I know you are."
Meanwhile Mo Tuxuan doesn't know why he can't stop thinking about the tiny human manager who reminds him a little of someone he knew in his previous life and who takes charge over him and is a wizard with paperwork and accounts payable and every part of him absolutely fills him with desire. The fact that they're both clearly aware how easily he could crush Qingshui and the fact that Qingshui still pushes back against him just makes Tuxuan's crush worse. He finds Shang Qingshui pathetic, not in a sad hamster way like Airplane, but in the epic boyfail way that he acts like he's hardcore and makes way too many unnecessary risks while trying to make himself seem unlikable and accidentally making himself into the cold-blooded rebel punk instead. It's even worse since Qingshui is educated and experienced enough by now that he should totally know better.
New Moshang after the identity reveal like "You killed me!" "And you killed me....." Shang Qingshui just sort of gives him a light backhand "don't say that in such a reverent tone like it's a marriage proposal, sir" But the blush increases bc that backtalk just makes Qingshui HOTTER.

🌤️ & ☔ !!
🌤️Share your favorite piece of dialogue from your WIP.
okkk so this is cheating b/c this is actually. From an old draft of If You Want Divinity that was way darker. But I might reconstitute it for a new thing b/c I do.... like it, it just didn't fit with the tone:
“Or is this all a… What do you call it? A leap of faith?” He grabs Porter by the hair, pulling his head back so that he’s forced to look him in the eye. “Was there ever a moment you doubted my devotion?” His other hand wraps nicely around Porter’s throat, resting pretty. “Or did you always know I would choose you?” A Message. I can feel everything. All your rage, your shame, your desire, your lovely desperation. Your envy… Does that frighten you? To know you can never hide from me again? It must be some sort of miracle for him to actually intimidate Porter, but rage emboldens him. He’s kept two people under his skin so long that the company is comforting. You don’t have the guts. “You sure?” says Jace. A beat. Do it. His grip slackens.
I am gonna count Message as dialogue :')
☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
I have a couple that I'm not sure if I'm gonna finish or go for. A lot of these are kinda ambitious which i used to take on with gusto but i do have a problem with abandoning shit (and delayed gratification) so the idea of committing myself to a big piece is like. Maybe.... maybe.... At the same time, i am that kind of ambitious person, short things are not normally what i do. I have a few ideas that are not the most fleshed out:
I do genuinely really like the idea of doing a You've Got Mail rival academies AU but i also know that would probably take a tone of work and i'm like..... ughhhh. But i think they could do the hate to love thing. Its the Nora Ephron n Meg Ryan collab i think is the most fitting for the two of them (although if there was a when harry met sally (evil version) Take..... maybe)
Vaguely a timeloop au sounds fun. I LOOOOVE a timeloop. and have been wanting to write one for forever but i don't have a strong Vision on it right now. Don't know if its a timeloop to change what happened kind of timeloop or a timeloop to realize you can never go back kind of timeloop. There's also the Timeloop as Redemption angle that i think is fun, that's the groundhog day thing that's the happy death day thing and i think there's precedent of it being like. a Chronomancy thing. Aguefort subject these bitches to a timeloop so you can put them back on your payroll im begging you
Althought time loop purgatory also goes hand in hand with my joke that Porter and Jace should be subjected to a Bad Place Elmville as hell punishment. A vaguely inspired Good Place AU would be really funny i think. Again, it's too formless for me to know what to do with it. I don't actually think it should be that they think they're in The Good Place, i think the trick should be they're convinced ankarna gave them a second shot at life so now they life in elmville only everything is shifted slightly to the left bc its a pocket hell dimension meant to torture them. Like Chidi and Eleanor, oops they fell in love. Again. This is formless.
ALSO kinda goes hand in hand with my joke abt Ankarnatown i made a while back like Jace fetching Porter from hell??? no notes. But like. damn i gotta make it myself?? That sucks
I honestly sincerely might write some zara/clones or lucilla/clones stuff. That ones purely and indulgence. Purely just for me. I wanted to include a small zara/jace throughline or a lucilla/j2 implication in Almost but it just like. Did not have the air for that i just felt like it didn't fit for the tone it just kinda was detracting (as much as zarajace making porter jealouse wouldve been fun) and just in there for me b/c i like Persephades Orphydice
Again this is formless. All i'm gonna say is i drew a gamechanger au. and now i think the idea of Aguefort subjecting his staff to gameshows for personal enrichment is so funny. Aguefort heaven is porter hell its a very efficient system

Just a curious question for mods (Rodney) and followers: At your retail job (current or past) what does being a store lead entail? What responsibilities/privileges come with it + what are the upsides and downsides?
My boss recently pushed the idea of being a lead on me and essentially said "someone is leaving, so a lead position will be available, you should do it, you've been here long enough" I haven't officially been offered the position, but she essentially said she wants me to do it.
Which....yes, I have, but the reason I'm not a lead is because a lead has almost all of the responsibilities of a store manager, with the exception of hiring new employees and doing payroll, for about 1/3 of the pay.
Plus, even though a lead position is a management position, it's not full-time.
Essentially, if I agreed to be a lead, I would gain about $2 more an hour, yet still be part-time (so, no benefits) and my hours would POSSIBLY increase from 4-12 hours a week, to maybe 20+. (But not necessarily, because there is a current lead who has 8 hours for this entire week)
Regardless, if I am officially offered the position, I will probably take it anyway, because I need something more for my resume and I think that'll look good. And I'm hoping to move soon, so I won't have to do it for long.
The responsibilities of a lead at my store (to my knowledge) are:
-open/close the store (physically open the door with the key, set/disable the alarm, open/close registers + count the cash, do the sales report at the end of the night) + now we have to clean the bathrooms every night (with no proper ppe, but that is another tale)
-cover employee breaks (this is the easiest and least objectionable one)
-are in charge of getting coverage if an employee calls out/doesn't show up (ask on the clock employees to stay late, call off-clock employees to come in)
-are actually usually the one that has to cover shifts (now I can't just ignore my boss's texts, rip)
-deal with any Karens/unruly customers/get yelled at by customers, essentially any time anyone "needs to speak to your manager" you gotta go over there
-deal with/solve any employee disputes/problems that don't have to do with payroll
-do whatever daily tasks the SM assigns on a list for you to do, usually includes things like putting up/taking down sale signs, cleaning certain aisles, doing inventory tasks, exception counts, etc.. I've seen various daily tasks lists...they're usually 2+ pages long.
I'm sure there's other responsibilities I'm forgetting/am unaware of, but this is all I can think of right now. It seems like a lot for just $2 more an hour, not even full-time tbh.
BONUS QUESTIONS:
-At your current/former jobs, what responsibilities did leads have? More or less than what I listed?
-Any advice? I have a few things in mind that I plan to do, such as always standing by my coworkers and taking their side over the customer. (Unless the employee is 100% in the wrong, but even then, I plan on phrasing it like "I think my coworker here was a little bit confused on the policy, but they tried their best, this is the way it's supposed to be, but it was not my coworker's fault" basically I won't throw anyone under the bus) I also plan on not completely kissing customer ass. If you're a customer and you're being rude and disrespectful to my employee, you will not still get your discount or whatever you wanted. I am not bending over backwards for disrespectful Karens. And I plan on regularly consulting with my coworkers for any suggestions on how I could improve/make things easier for them. Any other suggestions?
I have never worked anywhere that had a "Team Lead" position. So I can't say with experience.
My daughter works at the bread bowl place and when they made her a team lead all they told her was that she needed to train new people and know policies and procedures 100% and they were suppose to give her a $2 raise. But her and a friend started at the same time, made team lead at the same time, but he got the $2 and she got $1.50 and had to fight for almost a year for the .50.
Since her getting the title she has not trained the new people (the new hires have) and she is treated like a normal part timer. She has also said most of the people working are team leads.

It seems pretty good to me. And it started and we think Moana and Ariana and our approximal midnight and they'll fix the verbage they say that's terrible it never comes out right and do it to me and I get real mad I fix it too. Really though that's nice and he wasn't sure if it would trigger it or not cuz it said they're cutting a check doesn't know what kind of check didn't know it would be from payroll and they do cut it from payroll it's got to be it's kind of to be a snugger about it I mean if you cut it from something else the check isn't necessarily income they're not really thinking that no they were and I'm not sure how much they're thinking about it the pseudo empire they have some problems with these people and sometimes blame my husband and they're pretty big problems and candles the report and says he's swing to the side that will help him and he can't tell what we would do that sounds really absolutely true and what would you do I mean geez but still they had the checks cut and I did verify it and a letter and they're trying to send them and social security and the treasury got to information it really goes to social security directly in from the payroll system and they notify the government because they pay in and it's not a part of the wage but it's part of when you pay someone you have to pay a certain amount to the government for your wages and he said I didn't know that the bonus would have that taken out cuz it's not a wage and it would only work on checks that were missed for hourly wages. And that is what Walter loose sent he can't send a check for LTV but then he works at my loose at the same time and was paid out of payroll so we have to go back to the beginning that check would not necessarily have to be issued from payroll because it's already been declared but then again even though you can't be in two places at the same time it still has to be on the payroll so wondering what that would be cuz that's really the one that would show up the other guys is saying it it's bonuses
Hera
Now this is a question how can you be in the two places the same time and have an equal amount taken out the truth is you can't when they paid him admire luce they neglect the paying for that week and he remembers complaining about it it says I did this little dog and pony show for free to get the job and it's craziness. And he was not paid at all so Walter luce thought he was being clever. And he would put pressure on social security and the treasury department to try and get them out and our son says the last time they did this they stopped social security and put him in the hospital again almost and he was supposed to move but his dad supported him a little bit and it's savings so we're watching out for that and that's what they're up to so they want to put them in the hospital like he put him in the mayo Street place in LA. And they do go there and that's where they belong right according to the max he got really mad and said what does this mean they said they're running these hospitals somehow I don't know who's on the board but if they they Shadow you guys all the time and that is what I think they do he wants to know what it meant they run a second pair of books or follow you around and influencing the decisions you're making all the time on every decision that's what we know they do and he was aghast and sick and said no way and so if you tighten it up you're going to see it you loosen it up you're like this guy Trump he's a screaming banshee no matter what and so he decided to do that recently but yeah I get it it's because of the check it's because he wasn't paid by both and Ken was amazed you said you're getting away with it I said he's doing it to try and have me going hiatus and this motivation and then they want to take over social security and threaten me and that would be you guys but really I don't give me much of a role so he started laughing and said yeah okay and it's true this is really what it is and I see it
Hera
And we're up top but that was Harry and she did a great job it's Hera and she's going to fix the verbage. Hera not the other words. Anyways this big argument going on and whether or not he had them use payroll and stuff and our son says absolutely nothing and doesn't have taxes cut out and it would just be like this liability it looked like I'm working for Churchill and Banks or whatever the hell mayor lose or LTV in California and this time and it would mess up social security in my taxes but that wouldn't work because I didn't work there and I wouldn't cash the check it's not true but it wouldn't be that traceable we've had cash and put it in cash or on a card and we're saying this it's true too he would do that but that's not what they're up to but it might be what Walter Lewis was thinking because now he's got a problem the check went into social security and the treasury and it registered just as I said with all these people and people thought that we were saying the stuff like we do about the population or losses and it's not true and Walter loose did issue a check to him he says it too he remembers getting a check but we know it was like a personal check and he doesn't remember doing that so he wanted to pay him and have him pay him back or something and her son would say I don't think so. That's all but the girl was the one who did it and she did on the payroll machine so he's trying to just write this check and have it sit on his desk and he knew he had a check already and was not going to give it to our son her son says before you knew good you just going to let sit there and who cares and he just went on his business I'll send you here is you laughing and everybody else is not and he's saying this kid tricked me and he says no and also he said this too they can't find the record that he was paid and they thought I was lying and they're going to be getting in trouble and all sudden he got mad cuz he said cut the check and put it on my desk and he is the one who said to go through payroll and I get it too it's in the song

Hannah Keyser at Yahoo! Sports:
The sports broadcast model is mired in a protracted moment of flux. For baseball, the impact came for two teams already this past season. Nearly half the league could be affected as soon as next year, and for 11 of those teams, the uncertainty hangs over their offseason. Rather than resist this change, Major League Baseball is prepared to embrace what the league believes could be a brighter future, with the current changes paling in comparison to an overhaul of the sport’s economic structure.
The long-lucrative regional sports network is collapsing under the shift of television viewing away from mass cable packages, through which non-sports viewers subsidized some portion of the high cost of carrying live sports that teams charged distributors. Cord-cutting and more a la carte options have been looming issues for baseball teams for a while now, as teams benefited generously from the previous model. The exclusive rights to air local baseball games were such a priority for distributors that they were prepared to pay handsomely — with local media revenue accounting for an average of 23% of teams’ total revenue, by far the largest portion for any major sports league. The bankruptcy declaration by Diamond Sports Group almost a year ago forced the issue to the forefront of the baseball world. DSG, a subsidiary of Sinclair that owns Bally Sports Network, was responsible for the broadcasts of 14 MLB teams. Last summer, they stopped paying the rights fees to two of them, the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, forcing MLB to step in and take over those broadcasts with almost no notice.
As part of that process, the league was able to make Padres’ and D-backs’ games available in market through MLB.tv. The league’s streaming subscriptions are a technological feat that have long irked fans because they're riddled with blackouts. Cord-cutters can watch any and every game — except those of their local team(s). The blackouts are the result of the exclusivity agreements RSNs secure in return for the sometimes billion-dollar rights fees. But with those deals broken, MLB was able to make the Padres’ and D-backs’ games available both on linear TV and streaming in market. Although quite literally a stopgap step taken to ensure that San Diego and Arizona fans would not be left totally in the dark, that setup is what MLB would like to recreate across baseball. In the interim, that means MLB funneling local revenue to teams through their own distribution systems. But as part of the ultimate end goal, according to people with knowledge of the league’s thinking, all media revenue would be centralized and distributed more equally, leveling the payroll disparity that is believed to be a detriment to baseball reaching its full business potential.
MLB had seen the writing on the wall for years — dating back to when Sinclair purchased the slate of RSNs from Fox in 2019 — and had been preparing since late 2022 for the possibility that DSG would not be able to fulfill its contracts in 2023. That involved building out a local media department, which was pressed into action first in late May and then in mid-July to take over broadcasts for the Padres and Diamondbacks. For the remainder of the season, those teams’ games were available on linear cable television in their home markets as well as direct-to-consumer via MLB.tv in the same market at $19.99 per month or $74.99 for the remaining Padres games and $54.99 for the remaining D-backs games. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings in court, commissioner Rob Manfred guaranteed that the league would cover 80% of the money those teams were due to receive from DSG. The revenue from both the linear distribution deals struck by MLB and the MLB.tv streaming subscriptions went to the league and was then part of the 80% subsidy delivered to the teams. According to someone with direct knowledge of the situation, the league took a small loss as part of fulfilling that guarantee. When the season ended, the Minnesota Twins’ deal with DSG expired, putting them in the same boat as the Padres and Diamondbacks. That leaves 11 teams still in contract with DSG: the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers. Reportedly, the Guardians and Rangers are most in danger of being dropped next. What happens with those broadcast deals will be decided in bankruptcy court. MLB is pushing for clarity as quickly as possible, while DSG has repeatedly requested an extension to deliver an answer. Recently, the league filed a motion requesting the court to force DSG to decide which contracts they’re going to continue to honor — at least through 2024, if not beyond — and which they will reject. That motion is scheduled to be heard Dec. 15.
[...] Instead, the economics will function as follows: Teams that do not have other RSN deals will be part of MLB Media. The league will broker a deal with local cable distributors, sell advertising against those games and give the advertising money back to the team. Those teams’ games will also be available direct-to-consumer through MLB.tv, as was the case for the Padres and D-backs last year. Revenue from out-of-market subscriptions will belong centrally to the league, as it always has, but in-market subscriptions and in-market advertising revenue will go to the local clubs.
[...] Eventually, MLB would like to have both national and local broadcast revenue run through the league’s media departments. That would be a significant change for a sport that has long been defined by the differing behavior of big markets and small markets and in which the value of the local broadcasts has been a major source of that disparity. Even as an aspiration, it bears paying attention to. How the league navigates from now to that version of the future — and how it strategizes around the predictable resistance from big-market owners, who presumably won’t want to see the payroll playing field leveled — will dominate the business of baseball for years to come. Ultimately, MLB believes even the still-lucrative iterations of RSNs are a sinking ship, and teams will have to embrace the league’s plans for a digital-first future.
The rapid collapse of the RSNs will have impacts on the MLB, NHL, and NBA, but its biggest ones will be felt across MLB.

i realised about harvey is that when he chooses someone, he really gives his all for them, even if they're the wrong person. he cuts a piece of himself to burn just to keep them warm that when they leave it's not exactly the person that breaks his heart but the fact he gave everything he could offer and they still leave i guess what i'm trying to say is he didn't actually have to do much to keep mike because mike was willing to stay
You know what gets me about this is that a lot of the sacrificing he did for Donna was behind the scenes, like when he paid her inflated salary out of his own bonus for literally years, or more recently, when he went to Stu Buzzini behind her back to get him to offer her a job so she could stay on the payroll without conflict. He wants her to stay around but he doesn’t want her to know how hard he’s working to make that happen, and then when he’s faced with a situation where he has no choice but to act publicly (I’m thinking about the memo back in s2), he just let her go, waiting until the dust had settled before he went to Jessica before hiring her back. What’s he afraid of, I wonder, that if she knows how hard he has to work for her, she won’t want to stay? She’ll feel devalued somehow, knowing she isn’t getting all her little perks based solely on her own merit, and that won’t make it worth her time to stand by him? Is it that he doesn’t trust her, or is there some other basis for that expectation?
With Paula, of course, he was tearing himself to shreds to make her happy, feeling hideously guilty every time he didn’t conform to her exact expectations. It didn’t help that she had the gall to turn around and accuse him of being unfaithful, or wishing he could be unfaithful, every time he did something she didn’t like.
And then there’s Mike. Harvey all but threw himself under the bus to keep Mike when he told Jessica that she could have both of them or neither of them because he wasn’t staying without Mike, which, yes, that’s potentially a sacrifice of a pretty high order, but really all he was doing was putting them on an even keel. It’s not as though he said “Fire me and keep him,” or vice versa; he said you take us together or you don’t take us at all. And every time Harvey does something for Mike, or makes some sacrifice for Mike, Mike almost immediately tries to repay him in kind; for goodness’ sake, how long did those two spend dueling for the right to be the one to be sent to prison, to save the other from the same fate? What was that, ten episodes and a dramatic mad dash to the airport? Well, the courthouse, but it’s the same principle.
Basically what I’m trying to say is that Harvey and Mike, at their best, have a very balanced give-and-take relationship, whereas every time Harvey is trying to have a romance with someone else, he seems to end up pretty miserable about, oh, half the time.

Natasha's judgment is so off for a spy. Could we get insight as to how they're thinking? I know you wrote a chapter but maybe some backstory or such to explain why she dislikes Tony on principle? Why she's so quick to insult Maria and choose Steve? Is she caught up in the goodness and honestly Steve seems to project? Does her judgment on his decisions become biased bc she's used to reading ppl who mean harm not ppl who unintentionally/subconsciously harm? Does Steve make her feel like she's good
I’ll see what I can do to clarify this in-story, because odds are you’re not the only one who’s seeing it. Hopefully, though, at least some of my reasoning showed through.
Under the cut, because cue meta and you guys know how much I ramble when I get going:
There’s several factors to it all:
First and foremost, there’s the unreliable narrator thing to consider.
JARVIS, for instance, hasn’t trusted her since before she stabbed Tony in the neck, back in IM2.
Add to that how he died trying to protect Tony [and at least managed to give a bit of a warning, when the Penthouse Incident happened], coming back online [with all the trauma that entails, even if he doesn’t quite show it], to see Natasha doing absolutely nothing while Tony was a flick of the wrist from a snapped neck, and you get a budding Skynet who harbors absolutely no goodwill towards Natasha Romanov [and it shows through in his POV, even if it’s hopefully subtle].
Tony’s slightly more chill, but he’s known that Natasha doesn’t like him, and after the disaster that was his sole attempt to reach out towards Bruce, well…once bitten, twice shy.
Then, during the Penthouse Incident, he’s 50% on the defensive while the other 50% is in shock because JARVIS died and only Maria Hill even cared. [That he was being attacked was secondary, at that point.] So when someone’s attacking the only one who gives a damn about JARVIS, Tony’s not exactly feeling very charitable towards the woman who introduced herself as Natalie Rushman.
…also, anyone notice the codependence going on between Tony and JARVIS? There’s a reason I’ve been warning for it.
As for my take on Natasha’s perspective: I did my best, and hopefully my dislike didn’t show [much].
Thing is, TWiFFON is a spitefic at heart.
I started it in reaction to the turn the fandom took when it comes to Tony Stark especially after Civil War, so I’m not going to be exactly very friendly towards Natasha [or anyone on Team Cap for that matter, if you guys haven’t already noticed].
And that leads me to the next point.
Fun fact: I actually like Natasha, for the most part. Her characterization throughout the entirety of the MCU’s been through the wringer, fluctuating from movie to movie, though, and I took advantage of that when I outlined this fic.
See, Phase1-and-pre-AoU!Natasha’s got a good head on her shoulders. Her, I like: she’s badass and loyal to people rather than institutions and ruthless enough to do what’s necessary to keep her people safe [gee doesn’t that sound familiar]. She’s outwitted Loki [even if he was under the influence of the Scepter at the time], and survived the Red Room, for crying out loud! [If you’ve read my fic idea Welcome to the Family, you know that’s the one I had in mind at the time of writing.]
…however, that’s not the Natasha we’ve seen recently.
Phase2-especially-post-AoU!Natasha didn’t think to call the genius who’s company she infiltrated during a time they could’ve really used his expertise, didn’t see the problem in letting the fugitives she’d been helping chase go, and didn’t think twice about attacking the Crown Prince of a monarchy that just lost its King. I know it’s probably just bad writing in general [where the hell did the Bruce/Natasha thing even come from? Or the wanting a kid thing?! Canon or not, that’s just…nope], but still.
She unironically tried to go “I’m not the one who should watch my back”, in Civil War, despite having painted a target on anyone she ever worked with [yes I’m still salty about it], so it really should be no surprise that this is the Natasha I have in mind when writing TWiFFON. [Not very nice, but like I said, spitefic.]
So, that’s a good chunk on my approach to Natasha, right there. The rest involves her backstory.
I’ve yet to read a comic, but via tumblr and Phase 1, I got the feeling that the Red Room isn’t exactly very kind. [No comment on Phase 2′s interpretation bc I hate AoU with a passion rivaled only by Civil War.] As such, I can extrapolate from there that Natasha’s had some hardcore training, and to be fair, she’s very good at what she does, and her confidence in her skills is mostly justified.
However, she’s been born and raised as a living weapon, a child soldier and spy: that skillset is not exactly conductive towards being an analyst, or tactician.
Infiltrate consulates and take out hit squads singlehandedly? Sure. Reading people for the short term so she can use that to her advantage? Absolutely. But what she gets up to later on in the MCU is nowhere in her job description [coughcough*analysisinIM2*cough]. She can make a decent facsimile of it, sure, but she just isn’t qualified to diagnose people [though I have a headcanon for that scenario that explains why, but that’s something for another post].
But she can read people very well, and since it’s worked thus far, Natasha doesn’t think twice about it. Due to the life she’s had, she doesn’t look back, which I completely understand because if she had she might’ve drowned in regret because I get the feeling the Red Room’s upbringing was nothing less than cutthroat. Those two things get a special mention because of how she’s introduced to Tony.
Now, let me backtrack a little: I’ve done some meta before on how good Tony is at masks, enough so that he’s fooling everyone even as he’s dying. He grew up in front of the cameras, and learned how to work them from a master of the art [his mom, in my AUs].
So, when a spy rocks up expecting a show, Tony puts it on, and Natasha buys it. I don’t doubt she twisted some things to suit the analysis at the end, of course, but between his public image and his masks, Natasha ends up falling in the same trap everyone else does.
Anyone who gets close to him knows it’s bull, but since Tony in TWiFFON is more guarded than ever before, and he’s not about to let Natasha in now.
As for Steve Rogers…Tony’s image is a general “everyone knows” thing; it’s subtle and low-key “oh what’s he done now? Another Fashion Week Fiasco?” Kardashian-style sort of thing, which is part of why Natasha fell for it. Steve’s image, on the other hand, was blatant propaganda since the start and only became more so over time […I wonder what the Second Red Scare would’ve looked like, in the MCU now, ngl], so for Natasha, with her Red Room upbringing, it’s pretty damn easy for her to tell.
From when she first meets Steve, and later on down the road, it’s a no-brainer to look past the propaganda and notice the lonely man who’s adrift in a world that’s moved on without him. And from there, it’s very [almost scarily, for someone who’s very guarded when it comes to personal stuff] easy to make friends.
Steve sees Natasha where others see the Black Widow, which isn’t something many people do [Phil and Clint’re the exception, not the norm], though, so it makes sense that she warms up to him so quickly. Plus he’s a good man, and given the life she’s had, Natasha can fully appreciate just how few of them there are in the world.
And since we’ve already established that Natasha’s fiercely protective of the few people she likes, it makes sense she’s just as fierce to attack if the situation ever arises.
During the Penthouse Incident, Natasha’s immediate take-away of the situation was: Tony’d fucked up somehow and needed to own up to it, meanwhile Maria Hill was on his payroll, defending him when he was in the wrong, and had a gun pointed in the general direction of the people she liked more than the people she didn’t. Of course Natasha was going to yell at her for it!
And it wasn’t like Thor was going to hurt Tony or anything, his hand was obviously positioned in a way that was meant to be nonlethal and if he’d really wanted to kill Tony his grip would’ve been different.
After the fact, once Ultron’s made clear just what he is, she’s mildly apologetic about it. But since she didn’t really like Tony anyway and Maria Hill seemed to have forgotten about it, well, it wasn’t like it was anything major anyway, right?
...meanwhile, Maria’s very good at hiding her grudge and venting whenever she’s at one of the SWORD meet-ups while the others are patting her on the back while continuing to plan Phase 3 and checking out rich protocols, but that’s a story for another day.
Also: bear in mind that Natasha, in my AUs, has the Red Room’s version of the serum, so she forgets that not everyone’s as durable as she is. [that’s the only explanation for why I see her being so chill during That One Scene because the alternative’s incoherent internal screaming]

We got another whif if John rim Lord you know attacking our son, so we begin attacking you now yesterday we attacked and just made it half his computers eastern hemisphere today we're going to do the same you need the data plus we have this program cuz he's a big mouth, I'm going to pull it all off by noon
We released a gigantic number of pieces of information on him and the Max turned around and released a massive number of warrants for his arrest and almost every character he has down here too he's on the payroll the stupid things no devouring him whole. Well I'm actually going to town on him and they're pulling out millions of them in each area, eradicating them all. There's a huge deal. Every hour that goes by another two or three hundred warrants go out, no one can bear that and we're going to find it an additional $50,000 warrants for each company and many more than that with a larger companies the issued on his people and people he worked with. More motivation for them to silence him when it comes down to it just working with people who are inflicted who wear afflicted and she was threatening them into it and it said it was other people and they believed him. Now there's an uproar. We need to do this to grab people and we know who to grab. We're grabbing them now and soon they'll be gone. We also acquiring smaller companies and John Reema Lord has these areas and they're small and is losing tons of them it smalls like 20 by 20 and we go in and rip all the stuff out, at one point one area had 10 new companies and his only confusing himself cuz it's all his area we want to make it look like other races, he's already a confused little boy went to a rage about himself my dad say this why did I tell him he knows the other stuff anyways who cares. That is in a rage for real and it sounds similar but it looks sick and he sounds sick. I'm pretty soon we're going to go plow over him. And his next door still a little idiot, he thinks he's hiding and we're going after him but we know where he is is a jackass that man is a supreme a****** I've never heard of anybody who is mocked someone so much in my life and it is criticized for it. Then he gets hit you find him doing it again then he gets hit. And it'll all be over soon. They plan on crucifying John remillard he was saying that he's Jesus and is the son of God knows stuff and he's saying it to our son too and they're going to crucify him for real because hes a blaspheme, it's actually kind of funny it's not really the son of God and saying he is and that's what they crucified Jesus for now there's a lot of stuff going on but that guy there is wrong. We beat him up a bunch today and it's still blabbing coming back at at us and he needs to be beat up more. His bases are going and we're helping with it and hitting more than they want no we're hitting a lot of bases stands forces came back and Biden and they're hitting the bases of trump mostly the empire was hitting them already but not as much as those guys are they hit him rapidly too they fill up and they blast them to fill up again they blast them again they're doing it all over the world. And it's continuous right now they're up to the 10x10s and they got 5x5 to 10x10 which is new and was working on the second hour but it's ahead of schedule then they're going 10x10 to 20x20 it's going to take some time they're going to get it there's a bunch of stuff happening a lot of it is not very pleasant and it is gross here. We're now helping out here to help him get himself healthy

We did what our father and mother ordered us to today and it was huge giant forces came off and subdued them and he said to remain on duty here full act of duty were to hire until this situation with them holding a gun on me is over and no matter what the outcome is meaning if they need to be destroyed than they are all the max we will proceed to do so according to my experience they usually need to be crushed completely so might not be a short run and we're going to have to hire to replace all those who are working on the construction projects and we need to raise more Giants our father and mother's Day so we're beginning to do that now it was a huge force and it's becoming bigger and bigger now we're hiring everybody who signs on almost immediately after vetting and they're amazed and they say we need help and we're getting more help now finally and going to wartime economy in many areas tons of area by the way
We looked at those who are not keeping up and start speeding them up so they can become an issue and we saw why these Max are trying to hold it off we're getting our son's point, they're sitting here blabbing out of arrogance and it's founded in something and we see it's rooted in something so going to go after those things to shut them down well at least such a talking down
Thor Freya
You're also speaking and he can sense it new people never can I think it's less power and it's more you're awkwardly stupid you behave stupidly all the time the same bad things to our son constantly extremely rude idiotic things like these people will beat you up if you win poker so he thinks nothing will happen because he says nice nice things and it doesn't understand what the repercussions and his actions are they don't think of anything of anyone so they beat up on this guy happens to be Trump again and they throw him down outside he comes back an hour later kills them all
And is a serious threat to her son so we take care of both sides oh yeah shoots a couple he says take him outside and she's like this fellow renter so take it outside and they throw him in the van taking for a ride and the threatening our son the whole time and all sudden these people came along freedom and the courts people they tell him what to do now if he let him out they figure out he's one of them and they go after the people Mac actually and his son and the more like her acting as the police now so trying to grab our son in a second it we wouldn't tolerate any of this anymore going to play this game we're going to mulch you with it it's not very complicated and you're dying pretty soon you'll be out
Thor Freya
Us too
Olympus
Huge forces were hired today huge they heard our son started hiring and they said is it right and I said what else are we going to do and they looked at it so what do you mean I said hire everyone means higher everyone everyone on every place we have every corner of our area on our area where we are hire all of them I said it anyway I could he knows everyone that's not hired you send people out to hire them who are the friends family disrelatives and you do it until they're all hired and so we start doing it and I understood something from them they need really explicit orders so he sent them out and said if someone's not hired they are to be on our payroll signed on as soon as humanly possible this week all of them would be great it's working this week works
Olympus
