Seeing some pretty gross posts about Miguel, and... It's actually pretty important that Miles, an Afrolatino character, is both making friends with the younger generation of POC and in direct conflict with the older generation of POC. Like yeah Gwen and Peter B. are still important figures in his life for good and now also bad reasons, but it is Miguel and Jessica who he has an ideological conflict with. It is Hobie who in some ways takes over as a mentor and guide. Margo helps him escape. Pavitr is someone Miles himself helps and gives advice to. The antagonist is not Latino because they wanted to use stereotype shorthand to make everyone understand how dangerous he is, he is Latino because Miles is Latino. And surprise surprise this movie has a lot to say about-- not generational trauma per say, but community trauma. About what happens when shared trauma starts to define the boundaries of who is and who isn't a member of your community, rather than shared passions and shared dreams and shared missions.

There's a detail in the amnesia extra that shows that post-canon Xie Lian still wears simple cultivator robes made of rough fabric despite having a rich husband that would give him all the fancy stuff he wants. Which goes against the idea of Hua Cheng forcing luxury onto Xie Lian, he only gave him clothes made of expensive fabric in the extra because Xie Lian is currently his prince self who is used to better quality.

Like yeah, Hua Cheng does love to spoil Xie Lian and Xie Lian likes his attentions and gifts, but the rough fabric, the humble Puqi shrine, these are things that Xie Lian also likes. These are things he thinks fit the person he became is these 800, Xie Lian is not ashamed of being a scrap god because he sees the value in scraps. Because his life as a scrap collector actually allowed him to understand the common people he wanted to help better than he did when he was a prince or a god. And Hua Cheng understands this, he doesn't think any of this is below Xie Lian. From the first night in Puqi shrine, Xie Lian notes how San Lang doesn't bat an eye at the dilapated state of the cabin.

Hua Cheng has no expectations to impose on Xie Lian and accepts whatever judgement XL makes. Not only that. but in his own way, Hua Cheng is also a person who rejects the status quo and ideas of what should be, as exemplified by him rejecting ascension, creating a safe haven for ghosts and answering the prayers of poor children rather than of nobles.

there's this horrible school of attempted literary criticism on here that holds that 1. everything in any given author's work is autobiographical, especially if it seems "real" and 2. those themes seeped into the work subconsciously, revealing something about the author that they're either trying to hide or unaware of themself. it drives me up a wall, since it seems to deny the fundamental skills that make people good writers: the empathy to imagine and portray experiences that one hasn't had oneself and the ability to take one's personal emotional experiences or worldview and fold them, consciously, into the unworked clay of a narrative.
