hallo the dub is from the english dub found on a german dvd for the comet in moominland movie, its real funny being it is a 90s series production but just with the voices of completely different people. i was enchanted the moment that i heard him say his name as "snoofkin" and how overtime you can tell snorkmaiden is struggling to hide her australian (?) accent, among many things. movie is on internet archive
https://archive.org/details/english-unofficial-dub-comet-in-moominland
that's DELIGHTFUL news thank you for the link I cannot WAIT to watch it :D

I have some crazy conspiracy theories:
I always get this really strange, really disappointed, really let down feeling(depression am i right)when I actually stop and think about the relationship dynamics in Moominvalley. I mean, there are so many people who wholeheartedly believe in and support Snufmin but does anyone realize that if they were made canon, it would likely be more unusual and out of the norm for Moominvalley than it would be for our world of reality?
Let's start with the og crew: Moominpapa(Moomintroll's father), the Joxter(Snufkin's father), and the Muddler(Sniff's father). They were a trio of good friends going on adventures and then you look at their children and see how they too are a trio of good friends(I can't assume for two of them though...)going on adventures. Generally, I feel like Moominpapa and Joxter are the ones talked about the most and that's certainly true of Moomintroll and Snufkin as well, although we do love our Muddler and Sniff.
Then you look at what happened after their adventure days were over. They all got married(well most of them anyways) and found girls to love and had children. That's the norm. That's what's expected. That's their childrens' fate.
In the eyes of the kids who watch the show, Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden are soulmates. They’re the perfect couple. They'll end up like Moominmama and Moominpapa. And hopefully, Sniff and Snufkin will find someone too. I mean, I don't how many of you have even heard of the Snufkin and Alicia ship. I don't like it but that would be the norm...I guess. Sorry I really don't like that ship :/
It's never even implied or mentioned ever but I just feel like the unmentioned norm would be expected from like, everyone.
However, I think there’s more hope for the future now since it's now implied that Sniff doesn't really feel romantic feelings for anyone. I think it's safe to even mention that Snorkmaiden isn't a moomin like Moomintroll's parents both are(I mean it's another difference between generations to pin my delusions to)And despite that weird ship with Alicia, I doubt there's anyone on Snufkin’s radar except Moomintroll.
That brings this whole spiel to an even sadder conspiracy: Snufkin is the only one of the two who harbors romantic feelings.
I can't name certain instances because I have short term memory loss but I think this a very plausible theory. There really isn't a romantic interest for Snufkin in the series unless you count when his own step sis tried to get with him in the anime(like wtf was that?) Anyways, Moomintroll, on the other hand, has Snorkmaiden. My thing is, he either loves Snufkin platonically or he realizes he feels something more but doesn't want to break the social norm and disappoint people.
it's gotta be one of those two and since i'm a shipper I gotta lean toward the latter.
(I actually tried writing a fanfic about this a few months ago but I dropped it temporarily. I think I'll pick it up soon because I did like it I just got insecure lol)
But really all i'm doing here is throwing words in your face because I rewatched some s2-s3 episodes and got mad all over again. So yeah.
That's all I have to say today. I honestly think I say more on this site than I do in real life which is really sad but that's life these days. Nobody around to talk to about this stuff except you guys.
Thanks for reading whoever ended up reading this! I'm sorry if I left you more confused than you were before.

Something I’ve been thinking about… because of recent moominous events & also the classes I’m taking:
Queer artistry is so so special. & when a queer artist creates something, it resonates with other queer people. The art becomes inherently queer. I think it could probably be debated if all art made by a queer person is, necessarily, queer- separation of art and artist and all that- but at least I think that’s the case.
The question is: does this remain the case after the artist is gone and their art is altered? You probably see where I’m going with this. We think of these characters as inherently queer because of their long and storied history, but at the same time, we know that Moominvalley has changed these characters, too. I’m not going to definitively state that they’re made… not queer, because I don’t believe that to be fully true, but if fundamental aspects of their character and how we perceive it can be changed, can their queerness be so as well? And if the queerness is not erased, then what is it? tamped down? undermined? mishandled?
& Maybe this is the point where you go “okay static it’s not that deep” but I really do think it is! Moominvalley 2019 mishandles a lot of things, i daresay even skirts around the queerness of itself without fully leaving it out. Here is my main case: If they were going to be more explicit with Moomin and Snufkin’s queercoding, that very much should have been followed through with. & let’s speak on how much Moominvalley played around with and constantly changed the nature of Snorkmaiden and Moomin’s romantic relationship with little to no actual explanation or context? Guys I don’t know. It’s odd, it’s weird, and it certainly doesn’t sit right with me.
To me, Season 3 left off in a place where Snufkin and Moomin’s relationship was at it’s tipping point between romantic and platonic- the season literally ends with them arm and arm- And that’s why season 4 falls flat in the demonstration of their relationship. I never expected season 4 to deliver on that front in the first place- by season 2 I felt that the Moomin/Snufkin moments were heavy handed and a bit too forced to be completely natural, and I knew it wasn’t about to become explicitly canon in the first place because Moomin and Snufkin never have been- but to me it’s about follow through and writing, and the fact they were dropping such obnoxious hints only for that tension to be dropped last season feels like both a cop-out, and perhaps even intentional.
The contemporary Moomin boom occurred in 2019, in the wake of the series. Shippers went wild. absolutely nuts. If Moomin has no fans, the world is dead, but this definitely contributed to a spike in viewership. and listen. Season 1 had its flaws but if every season onwards was of the same quality, and each season included the snufmin subtext only as much as season 1, I would not be upset right now. I do, in fact, believe, that the queer fanbase of this show was teased and strung along with the Moomin/Snufkin relationship. And I think the way it was handled in season 4 was due to the fact that they wouldn’t need that part of the show to, excuse my terminology, bait viewers along because it was the last season. Obviously this is all speculation, but I really don’t think it’s all that unlikely. And I’m not even saying that it’s strictly the writers’ fault, but I think there was someone in power who let the queer shit- the shit was was just obvious enough to give young queer viewers fuel- pass by for as long as it was useful, but by no means could the show surpass a certain limit.
Ahem anyways I love Moomins and I dislike Moominvalley 2019… for many reasons but also for this… sorry for incoherencies, typos, the like.

S 4 eps 6. SPOILER
Whatttt😭 does Moomintroll have any personality this season? Like at all? Does he have any backbone???? Last eps was him getting pushed around by Stinky, and this eps is just him getting pushed around by Snorkmaiden.
Why does Moomin seem more interested in Snorkmaiden than he has seemed for literally all seasons. Where is Snufkin?????? I fear that i might feel a bit...
...Queerbaited...
I also truly did not think i could dislike Mymble more than i already do this season... That woman is a terrible mother. I know that age is a very fluid thing in the moomintroll universe, but Sniff having a crush on Mymble and her playing along really threw me off. Oh but the scream i Scrumed when Sniff got heart eyes for Stinky😭💀 even if it was only for like 10 sec.

okay can i just say. in my opinion moominvalley season 4 was the worst season out of all of them, which really isn't the thing you wanna say about a final season...
the whole thing was so anti-climactic, like the whole thing with snufkin and joxter. in what world is it satisfying to not have them meet?? especially after having a whole build up for it as well??? if they're not gonna meet don't pretend like it. i'm expecting a memoires adaptation where they do meet now
this goes for the final episode again. it just felt like another filler episode, none of that tension that the original story (and even the movie) provided. it was not a satisfying conclusion to the story AT ALL.
and don't even get me STARTED on the relationships in this season.
more specifically whatever moomintroll and snorkmaiden have going on. why are they still together?? genuine question, and i don't mean that in a "break up so that snufmin can get together" way, i mean it in a "break up because they're both holding onto something that isn't working for either of them" way. it's been set up since season 1, when moomintroll is shown to care about his best friend more than his girlfriend and her then feeling neglected, and further in season 2 (or 3? i can't remember) with the whole metaphor with moomintroll holding snorkmaiden's paw too tightly which very clearly implies their relationship, based on other subtext.
and also snufmin?? i hate, genuinely hate, how there was just none of it, no mention or continuation of anything the other seasons have been building up to. it's as if we're back to season 1 again, except for the fact that snufkin and moomintroll are more comfortable with little touches and stuff like that. how is it that gutsy just decided to be basically done with it after the lonely mountains scene?? there's just none of that beautiful queer subtext that tove's stories contain
also this doesn't feel like an issue with them being gay, okay yes it does i take it back but gutsy were completely fine with making sniff fall in love with stinky in the midsummer meddling episode which. what the hell even was that. what the fuck gutsy
also where the hell was snufkin in this season?? he was in like 4 episodes which is kinda insane for such a major character😭
i think i'll end my rant here by saying that this season was incredibly disappointing and i'm fucking pissed about gutsy queerbaiting us

I've read that some characters from the moomins like Snufkin, little my and their mother and their sisters are not really humans. So how would Snufkin, Moonin and the other characters react when they meet s/o who is a girl human that one day appeared in moonmin Valley?
You added other characters and I will absolutely use it to push more Sniff content on you! Also yeah. Considering moomins are canonically REALLY damn tiny, the humanoid looking characters would be like fairies or sth. But I will make them human sized bc I think it's easier to write (if you want more accuracy, sent me a message and I'll do one more)
Tumblr media
Snufkin is pretty unfazed compared to others. He’s been travelling enough to have come across humans at some point. Pretty surprised to find out that his upbringing is something so strange (I mean, im pretty sure he was allowed to wander around before he would be considered old enough to do so by human standards). Sometimes, when he’s feeling a bit silly he makes stuff up about his kind to trick you. Says it in the most chill voice too so the only way to fact check him is to ask his half-sister. Little My calls him out every time just to be a menace, in true older sister fashion
Tumblr media
And when it comes to Little My, she treats you like one of the group regardless. But that doesn't mean she’s not going to complain about your long human legs and so on. Will absolutely use you to get the things she wants off of high shelves. And will laugh if you bang your head on something. I mean, the creatures you come across come in different sizes so it’s not uncommon to find homes and structured built for them. But it's sweet sometimes too (as sweet as she can be) when she calls you her human. And maybe, sometimes (since having humans around isn't something most residents are used to) she’ll drag you around to some events with the neighbors to see their reaction (and maybe to brag about her gf, but she won't tell you that-)
Tumblr media
On the other hand Snorkmaiden is so curious! Asks you about human culture and fashion. Sometimes the others joke that she’s turning into her brother. Begs you to take her to a human village, though that would either require crazy high stealth or some magic. Since you just showed up in the Moominvalley, she’s very open to show you all the kinds of wonders that were ordinary to her before. Being with you made her see them as more special, she loves that part of your relationship a lot. Plus, if you compliment her ability to change colour (not sure if that's a part of the show, but she can do that in the books) she’ll flush and turn all colours of the rainbow
Tumblr media
Okay, Sniff is a funny one because this guy’s afraid of so much but also wants to seem so brave and cool in front of you. Of course, he insists that he was totally not terrified when you two first met. And he thinks being human makes you kind of special (I mean, in Moominvalley it actually does) so he’ll always emphasize that he’s your favourite. Yeah, that's right guys, he has a human girlfriend and she likes him best. Right? You do like him best, yes? Overall, he’s pretty silly and will exaggerate everyday things just to see the shine of wonder in your eyes (and because he feels like he has to give you something special so you stay with him). Still terrified that you just found your way into the valley though, what if bad humans come too 😰😰
Tumblr media
Moomin is a lot more carefree about the idea. He’s so happy to be with you and show you around though he tends to forget that the things that might be ordinary to him are totally new to you. Obsessed with any type of human trinket you have on you. And if he could he’d stay up all night just to hear you talk about your life before coming to live with them. Honestly, he asks a lot of questions and some of them might be a little intrusive, but he doesn't get upset if you don't want to answer them. Oh, and he might have forgotten to mention the hibernation thing to you. Oops
Tumblr media
As expected, Snork would ask a ton of questions. Ready to answer any you might have too, but be prepared for a lengthy rant every time you ask. Though to be fair, if he’s your significant other, then you might not find that too dreadful. He’s more of a theory guy though, so half the time when you all go on your adventures, you’re not much more prepared than when you first joined the group. Still, he truly does find your world interesting and will listen, no matter what you choose to tell him
Tumblr media
And for the bonus character that nobody asked for - Stinky! To be fair, I think it would be funny for a normal human girl to appear in that magical world and just go like, yeah, I like this mean creature the best. I don't think he would be nice about you being a human, but that's kind of on brand. He would be interested in your human possessions and stories. Even if it's hard to tell that he’s genuinely interested. Later he would add to the stories you told him and scare other creatures with them. You’re free to join at any time if you wish to contribute to the chaos

I feel like you’re qualified to know this: Is Moomin actually queer or is it just something the fans started headcanoning
This reminds me of this instagram comment section I have saved on my phone
Tumblr media
But answering seriously: Yes, Moomin is queer. The one doing the swedish voice for Misabel in the 2019 series brought this up
”It’s something you didn’t think of as a child, that the gender roles are very fluid in Moominvalley. There’s many queer themes. Misabel is an example of that. Also Misabel’s dog Ynk that’s a dog that only likes cats is a good example of this. It’s one of the big strenghts, which makes you as an adult have things to ponder about in the story. It’s fun that Moominvalley is a place where everyone can be just like they are. Man or woman, dog, cat, or something in between. You can like whoever you like. Moomintroll can like Snufkin more than he likes Snorkmaiden, and sometimes he likes Snorkmaiden more and that’s also wonderful.”
Tove Jansson was a queer woman. Two characters, who for some reason are named Thingummy and Bob in english, are named Tofslan and Vifslan in original text. They are nicknames of Tove and Viveca. Viveca Bandler was a woman Tove had a secret relationship with in 1946. Tofslan and Vifslan are two characters who speak in a secret language only they can understand, and they carry around a bag that they REFUSE to open, as inside is the most beautiful thing in the world (the king’s ruby) and they are terrified of anyone finding it. So, you can see the allegory of queerness, the closed bag as the ”closet” and when they eventually open it, the secret comes out”.
The character Too-Ticky is also based on Tuulikki Pietilä, who was Tove’s romantic partner, who were together from 1956 up until Tove’s death. In their letters to each other, Tove used to draw Too-Ticky at end of letters
Tumblr media
The most emotional scene I think in all of the Moomin’s stories is when Moomin hides inside the magician’s hat and he gets turned into a hideous creature. No one recognizes him even when he cries that he IS Moomin. And then his mom comes, and he shouts ”Mama, it’s me! It’s me, Moomin!”
And she looked at him, and says ”Yes, you are my son.” And that’s what makes him turn back again.
This scene can be an allegory for when coming out and trying assure them that you’re STILL YOU, and everyone is starting to see you differently.
I think the anime was really good at capturing this scene (I mean the anime is superior in every way anyway)
youtube
(Flash forward to 1:55 for when the mom comes out)

Sometimes I think about Mrs. Fillyjonk's character and my mind always wanders back to these series of panels and I always go a little insane over them.
What does it MEAN for her character, exactly?
Moomin Winter is a story about a family and some strangers coming together for the winter and having a small child stick his nose up everybody's business until the beans are spilled and everyone realizes just how silly their secrets actually are. At least 2 of the new strangers, Miss Fluffins and Mr. Gromf (who are not related to eachother in any way, I think I should clarify), have secrets they don't want getting out because it breaks their facade of gender performativity.
Fluffins has a facade of a demure and overly polite vaguely old woman who wears frills and "totally would" help Moominmamma, but she doesn't want to get in the way of her business. Fluffins' secret is that she loves playing war with tin toy soldiers, and loves smoking cigars and drinking hard whiskey.
Gromf holds himself as a very picky and strong-willed man, when in actuality he's just very sensitive and his secret is that he loves making doilies.
These two secrets are very much based on subversion of gendered expectations, even if it isn't gawked at outright because of their genders.
Miss Fluffins pretends she doesn't want to intrude on Moominmamma's housework, when in actuality she literally doesn't know how to do housework, which is a very unwomanly thing for her to do. And Mr. Gromf masks his nature as a very picky eater by having a gruff attitude about it.
In Moominmamma's search for someone to take care of the very inconvenient Nibling in her stead, she first visits Mrs. Fillyjonk because of her status as a proper mother — but before we get to that, we must fully contextualize this encounter by talking about the second encounter; that of the Inspector.
Moominmamma's second choice for a caretaker for the Nibling is the Inspector, who she probably thinks is a fine choice because he has prison cells for Nibling to sleep in and he probably has experience watching over people in prison, I guess...? The problem here however is that the Inspector highly dislikes children, or atleast taking care of children because they might ruin his roses. Inspector's secret that Nibling sniffs out here is that he keeps candy in his pocket and hides holes in his socks by doing the old "coloring the feet where the holes are" trick.
What's interesting about this is that this scene gets paralleled shortly after Moominmamma comes back home by having the Nibling pickpocket Gromf in a similar way and Gromf denying his ownership of the doily in his pocket just like Inspector does with the candy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus, Inspector returns later in the story by playing poker with Moominpappa and being part of the crowd who gets their beans spilled and everyone is wondering why they were hiding those secrets in the first place, because they seem silly to hide in retrospect. You know who isn't part of that crowd despite having a similar screentime to Inspector? Mrs. Fillyjonk.
She doesn't come back to have her secret revealed.
Now, why is that? Well, we must further contextualize this contextualization of the scene by looking at Inspector's character compared to Mrs. Fillyjonk.
Despite his rough and nearly unrecognizable start in Moomin and the Martians, once he obtains his scarf in Club Life in Moomin Valley we see glimpses of what will evolve into the policeman with effeminate sensibilities that Lars apparently really really liked, which I explained in more detail in this post. The short of it is that Inspector is a more candidly queer character, a subversion of gender norms and the idea of a bumbling police character in general.
But in spite of his general honesty (and something I didn't really touch upon in my post), he still doesn't like people knowing that he likes eating candy for whatever reason, like in Moomin Christmas where Snorkmaiden admires his big box of chocolates but he dismisses it as a doctor's prescription for his blood pressure. I suppose his obsession with flora is fine for people to know and offering candy to his prisoners is great but he draws the line at people knowing he likes eating it himself, I guess. There's some ordinary embarrassment to be had in his mind about it.
So with all that outside context, let's bring the conversation back to Mrs. Fillyjonk, and add context to her character to see why this feels significant to me.
Mrs. Fillyjonk was first introduced in Moominmamma's Maid as the mother equivalent to that new jock neighbor who moved into town and is making your dad feel bad about his own withering masculinity. Mrs. Fillyjonk is the proper Woman's Woman, the trad mom without a husband, she is quite canonically one of those mothers who post pictures of their overly tidy and neutral grey-colored children's room on Instagram and Pinterest. She isn't necessarily a feminist but she is heavily involved in organizations involving women, like the Women's Committee, or the sewing circle, or the Moomin Valley S.P.C.A. (Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals) which is "coincidentally" only made up of women. She also organizes social events like bazaars and parties for painters, and takes invitations to games of bridge very seriously because, quote, "In society, invitations are sacred".
And yet, despite her credentials as a Woman among Women, she apparently doesn't know how women work (according to her maid, Mabel, in Mymble's Diamond), nor do any of her friendships have any sense of sincerity outside of amicable business-like rapport with her fellow women in gathering events like tea parties, and she could barely keep any of her painter guests happy in the party she threw just for them. She is a sad imitation of a socialite, caught up in the glamor of being a perfect housewife in spite of her husband's absence (according to an alleged response by Tove to a fan letter he was an explorer who went missing in Borneo) and yet totally incapable of bearing any actual charisma. The only thread of sincerity for her is with her own maid and ironically the Moomins, who invite her to things like colonizing an island or bridge despite Moominmamma's general distaste for Mrs. Fillyjonk.
I can't even say much about her relationship with her kids because their characterization amounts to Huey, Dewey and Louie pre-2017 reboot if they didn't have names, color coding, or that boyish rebellious streak. They're just vaguely well-educated, ambiguously gendered and boring children who follow their mom around and call to her when something happens and have a pretty okay relationship with her. Any expression of boredom or sense of rebellion and interactions with the main kids in a playful environment the adaptations gave them are just additions to their characters that give them even the vaguest hint of interest.
Mrs. Fillyjonk... Is a really big weirdo who hates weirdos. And the fact that she owns a pair of pants that she's embarrassed of is a revelation about her character that I believe is just too glossed over, but also the fact that it's glossed over speaks to the emotional tragedy of her character.
The funny-looking trousers bring up many questions; Did those belong to her husband? Why are they stuffed away in a drawer in what seems to be a living room? Is she embarrassed because they look weird/ugly or because she doesn't want people knowing she owns pants at all? Does she wear them? Why do her kids seem angry at Nibling to finding them? Do they know? Do they know that their mom is a cross-dresser who likes dancing in her little trousers while nobody is looking because she feels desperate in the confines of her gender expression?
Okay, maybe that last one is a stretch, but it's not a farfetched conclusion because we know so little about her. She apparently owns a rifle and atleast 12 different ashtrays and a smoking jacket, why does she have those? Why so many ashtrays in particular? Does she smoke? We never see her smoke even under the influence of Spring Fever where she loses all her inhibitions, what gives? Did any of that belong to her husband or does she just have those lying around for enigmatic reasons?
Tumblr media
The fact that the pants were revealed after she makes a comment on Snorkmaiden being too fat "for a girl" is also very telling. It's like a response to her, it's the narrative saying "If you're really so concerned about what's proper for a girl, then why do you have this?", she's so shocked from Nibling finding them she drops her cup and goes up to stuff it back in the drawer where it belongs, and she's never seen in the comic again despite her words reaching Snorkmaiden through Nibling and influencing her facet of the plot. Moominmamma just excuses herself after such a breach in privacy and it's never acknowledged again, even indirectly.
What is this? It's so... It makes me feel so confused about her character but at the same time it makes her social awkwardness feel more complete. She's so superficial in her social circle not just because she's a superficial person herself but also because she doesn't want anyone to know some things about her, she's so ashamed of herself and stubborn about that shame that the narrative doesn't give her a chance to redeem herself in the end of the story like the Inspector. There's something so compelling about the idea that her relationship with gender or even just men is so thoroughly tangled that it's hard to make out for even herself.
Are the pants a representation of the grief for her husband she stuffs down under the surface or are they a representation of that shameful side of her gender expression she doesn't want anyone to find out because it ruins her image as a Proper Woman? It feels so.... I can't even conceive of this as something to be taken at face value because her entire character is in opposition to Moominmamma's impropriety, yet here we are! She's ashamed of having pants! What does this mean, Tove and/or Lars!!!
And don't get me started on her and her children's fear of loud fireworks because that's another rabbit hole I-

Just finished the Fuddler’s Courship DLC
Stuff I liked:
Moomintroll and Snufkin’s friendship!! They are so cute, every moment between them was so precious.
Mymble Jr was very much not like her 90’s role, but in fact a lot closer to what I assume her personality is like in the books. AKA, remarkably similar to Little My.
Fuddler is a precious bean who deserves all of the love in the world.
Jumble is also a precious bean who deserves all of the love in the world.
Snufkin finding a seashell and thinking to give it to Moomintroll to give to Snorkmaiden. Love seeing him being invested in their relationship. Still think it should have been a gift from the both of them, though.
The puzzles were challenging and fun, but not too frustrating.
Moomintroll and Snufkin still got to see the fireflies!!
That little sequence at the very end. It was sooo bittersweet. Snufkin has such a hard time saying goodbye.
Things I didn’t like:
Why didn’t Snorkmaiden have more to do?? The whole concept was matchmaking. Snorkmaiden LOVES romance!! Why isn’t she stepping in to help Fuddler? Honestly, she should be the one running the show. Why is Snorkmaiden not getting the respect and attention she deserves in this game???
Moominmamma and the others crashing Moomintroll and Snufkin’s alone time. I know they meant well, but Moominmamma is usually more perceptive and thoughtful. I can’t imagine she wouldn’t consider that Moomintroll and Snufkin might want some time alone.
Fuddler and Sniff seem to be completely unaware of the fact that they are brothers. Same with Mymble Jr and Snufkin.
Related, Mymble Jr asking Snufkin if he wanted to ask her out next. Obviously not, Mymble. He is your brother! Sure, he doesn’t know that yet, but still! It’s just a weird piece of dialogue to add, considering that many fans are likely fully aware of Snufkin and Mymble being related.
Moomintroll gives the seashell to Snorkmaiden off-camera. Why?? I wanted to see that sweet little moment between them!
So, overall it was okay, but I was still fairly disappointed with the way the game minimizes Smorkmaiden’s role in Moomintroll’s life. It seems to give the impression that Moomintroll is only humoring her, rather than genuinely reciprocating her feelings.
Oh well.

So then moomintroll and snorkmaiden go to snufkin and basically stage an intervention lmao, snorkmaiden gives him a book and everything about the symptoms of love and how it works ect, snorkmaiden is like 🙏 you god damn green boy have you ever heard of love before 🙏 (meanwhile moomin is awkuardly sitting next to her in the tent looking between her and snufkin, probably has his face in his hands most of the time) and snufkins like 😐 wtf guys ive never loved in my life that shit sounds really annoying lol 😐 and then snorkmaidens like, yeah, you ARE annoyed dumbass, what was all that stuff about wanting to throw up when moomin holds your hand, and then snufkins like 🙄 smh thats not what i meant by sickness, i meant like a fever, like fast heart rate, high temperature, flushed face, ect and he thinks hes really got them, hes so confident about it, hes like this will prove to them i have a fever and dont have any of this wanting to kiss moomin shit, but snorkmaiden is just looking into snufkins god damn eyes with the most “🤨” expression and shes just opens her silly book she gave him and opens it on a chapter talking about those symptoms, and snufkin is just staring and this thing hes like … no …… i have a fever …. Im fever boy ……… and so snorkmaiden is like oh my god pls just read the book so her and moomintroll leave him alone, and then like over the course of the next few weeks they both help him slowly realise that hes in love and like idk guys i think it would be funny but also very sweet

If the moomin characters where joined to ask a cult worshipping Cthulhu who do you think would join and who would refuse-
((asking for a moomins and call of Cthulhu crossover campaign- also I want your opinion oh great one/silly))
Oh wow that is a very difficult question... I feel like some of the characters would join under false or naive pretenses, none of which actually have to do with worshipping Cthulhu. The Moomins would probably join because they don't actually know what it's about, or Moominpappa and Snorkmaiden think it would be fun/believe it's the right thing while Moominmamma and Moomintroll air on the side of caution.
Sniff would probably join if there's money to be made (or they offered him enough money), Little My would probably join because she thinks the giant octopus-dragon monster is sick as hell and she would make a great minion to Cthulhu, Mymble Jr would probably join if a crush asked her to...
If anyone would actually look forward to the New World Cthulhu would bring, it'd probably be Stinky, not because he's evil or actually hates anyone or anything, he just likes seeing the world burn while he drinks champagne on a pile of gold while he's on the Big Guy's side.
I'd imagine more reasonable characters like Snufkin, Snork, Mrs. Fillyjonk or Inspector would stay far away from that crowd. Snufkin would probably stay just a little closer and make comments on the situation in the hopes the Moomin family would get out of the cult.
It's just like any other day in Moominvalley
(Also can I please join your campaign that sounds awesome)

Through what exact tags or search results you go through after your usual Moomin reblogging?
I start with "Moomins" then i go to -> "Moominvalley" and I sort by recent Monday through Friday on my lunch break at work, anything outside of it I wait for the next day. Weekends are purely incidental based on what shows up on the dash
Ive found that that covers almost everything! If you search those two tags you'll find like 90% of what's posted under them, they're the most common. If you want more, specific character tags like "snufkin" "snorkmaiden" etc work, but usually they're tagged as moomin as well. Very rarely do people miss that.
The only things you'll miss if you search those two tags are often just pictures of the park, or posts in other languages. You can use the other language versions of the tags, but the way tumblr's tagging system works they're generally grouped either way. "Mumin" and "tanoshii mumin ikka" will occasionally bring up different results, along with all of the other language variation tags, but not usually.

My newest costume: the Snork Maiden! I hadn’t really considered myself that big of a Moomin fan, but on my second costume of the series, I feel like maybe I should think about revising that opinion
Of course, this one is a lot less of a direct recreation than my Snufkin outfit, most notably because the Snorkmaiden looks like this (IE does not wear clothes, and sort of resembles a stuffed hippo. Side note: we know that Moomins are a type of house troll, but has the jury come to a consensus on if Snorks are also a type of troll or are they something else?)
Tumblr media
Resultingly, a great deal of creativity was called for, and so I ended up creating what was more of “what would the Snorkmaiden wear is she were a human, or at least a little more humanoid?”
The results: mostly white (since she’s pretty much always shown as white) with pink and gold trim, an excessive of bows and ribbons, a flower crown, fluffy skirts, and all sorts of fun things. This was definitely a “more is more” costume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a lot of decoration: trim on the underskirt, trim on the overskirt, bows and beads over top of that trim, trim, bow, and beads on the sleeve… basically, if it stood still long enough, I added bows
Closer looks at the overskirt and sleeve trims:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn’t come across well in the pictures, but the bodice isn’t just pink, it’s like a holographic rainbow sort of fabric (which was hell to work with, by the way. It stretched and slid and refused pins and was just miserable. I had to both interface and flatline it to make it workable). I’m also really proud of how I managed to get it to look really seamless (it took an unholy amount of handsewing, but hey it looks cool and I totally didn’t do it because my thread didn’t match perfectly)
I also made a big, dramatic flower crown and a pair of little ears on hair clips, to finish off the outfit (and you get to enjoy my amazing photo editing skills, which is a pity because my makeup looks really cute in these pictures but alas having one’s face on the internet seems more trouble than it’s worth)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a ton of little details in this costume that help tie it to the original Snorkmaiden design: the rainbow fabric of the bodice to mimic how Snorks change color, the pearl beads and necklace because in Comet in Moominland, Moomintroll gives her some of the pearls he found to turn into jewelry, and a gold bangle I had in my costume jewelry stash for her anklet
I’m really happy with the costume! It’s very cute and fairly comfy, and while there are some things that technically could be improved there isn’t really anything that I want to change

The Fox and the Vagabond, ch. 25
...... *stage whisper* sorry to be late my dog ate my google document
chapter twenty-five the last night in moominhouse
The aftermath of Snufkin's confession.
"Come with me, Snufkin." The Mymble's daughter took his paw. "Stand here. Arms out - no slouching." "What are you doing, Mymble?" "Taking your measurements. I'm sure you've never done this in your life. But if we're going to sew you new things as quick as you want them, we'll need proper measurements." She flew over him with a measuring tape and dictated numbers to Little My, who scribbled them on a notepad with a dour look on her face. "... twenty-eight. Gosh, you're skinny," Little My mumbled. "Bet I weigh more than you," Snufkin said. "Bet if I ate you, I'd be hungry again in an hour," she growled. "My, did you finish? Let me know so I can move on," Mymble said. "Look forward and fix your posture, Snufkin." Snufkin straightened, but kept one eye fixed on Little My. "Are you that angry with me?" "Yes, I am!" Little My threw down her pencil and stomped in front of him, arms crossed. "The whole time you were keeping this big secret. The whole time." "Not quite," he protested. "Besides, you figured out I'm a 'fox kit's pappa' on your own." "The old vagabond lost his heart in the end," she muttered, and he couldn't tell whether it was a compliment or an insult. Both, probably. "You're just like Snorkmaiden. Trying to do everything by yourself and ignoring anyone who bothers to care what you're up to. People call me a spy, but all I do is pay attention. The others are too preoccupied with their own delusions." She sounded very put out. Warm fondness for this pint-sized interloper and her adorable frown swelled in his chest. She didn't always mean well, but meant the best when she did. "People call you spy because you do things like read their private diaries. But you do pay attention. It's thanks to you that we learned it was Goster setting those traps." "And it's thanks to me that Moomintroll found the nerve to make a move on you," she reminded him. "You owe me." "I can't wait to return the favor." Little My grimaced. "Ew! No thanks. It's a pirate's life for me. You and Moomintroll can keep that soppy, wet, gross stuff to yourselves." "Snufkin!" Mymble screeched. "Posture!" The hours wore on.

Soooo… my sister managed to find a way for both of us to watch Moominvalley Season 4, so I shall now provide my honest thoughts on each episode.
It will be a bit chaotic in terms of thoughts cuz there’s a lot to say and think about but I hope it’s alright.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Episode 1:
A few seconds in and me and my sister already want to get away from Brisk just as much as Little My. We never liked him -3-. Misabel is strong af too, and Snork’s friendship with her is really really sweet! I actually don’t mind her being the focus but I thought with her strength being the focus, she would use it in the final act. Instead she was shot from the cannon. Which still gives her recognition with her being the top of the pyramid, but originally I thought she was gonna pick up the final act by literally picking them all up (which she has shown she can pick up the entire circus). But instead it was saved for her to properly show Brisk how strong she is when it was displayed almost the entire time…
I also felt Moomin was forced into a role once again. Simply cuz it was considered “destiny” since his parents once were in the circus (acts a backstory to Moominpapa’s hat, and also just shows how chaotic the Moominparents past is. It’s always funny to me) but also it makes sense he’d want the leader role, and he’s very good at it as he’s able to recognize the good qualities in his friends and family.
Episode 2:
On to the episode where that one scene gave the Snufmin fans (including me and my sister) hope in the trailer. I couldn’t help but laugh at how angry Snufkin looked cuz normally, his eyebrows would be covered by his fringe (people weren’t lying about his eyebrows having a workout). He’s just a smol and angy boi this episode. My sister also said the way Moomin calls for Snufkin sounds like him calling for his girlfriend.
It actually interested me when Fillijoink got involved in the operation against the railroad. I originally thought she’d be all for it. But it’s nice to see that she does appreciate and love the Moomins despite how chaotic they are against her strict nature. It’s also nice the Antolín gets mentioned, though if they really wanted to find it, they should’ve gone to the beach or find a hole that he might’ve dug up.
It was a pretty chaotic episode seeing everyone come up with absurd ideas to stop the railway from being made, along with the solution being found within the rules. Cuz some rules do contradict each other.
Episode 3:
A Sniff centre-episode…. That’s it. That’s all I thought.
Other than Moomin being a supportive friend, and Little My and Snufkin being the best siblings ever, I genuinely did not have much thoughts.
It also just confirms how bad of a mom and guest Mymble is. She just basically lets her kids run around and break things she “borrows”, along with give away those things she “borrows”. I felt like I was on Fillyjoink’s side on this, but I was also Moominmama where I would’ve just left Fillyjoink and Mymble to work it out for themselves.
Episode 4:
Snorkmaiden episode! It’s also where the seahorses come back… joy. I actually always liked how the seahorses looked, but damn they were bitches this episode.
The episode is basically that “young kid wants to be like the older kid, but turns out the older kid is a bad influence”
It also references the wooden lady from the books in the beginning, which technically was the arc this episode but it was mainly focused on Snorkmaiden and recognizing that she was going against her morals for people who don’t actually care about her or her friends.
Heck, Snorkmaiden wasn’t even jealous of the figurehead this episode. She actually wanted to return it to its ship, and was more upset that Moomin claimed that “they” found it, when it was all her. All the admiration for the figurehead all went into the seashorses, and they didn’t give a shit about him!
I actually liked this episode, even though the image of snorkhorse is now forever a curse to my memory.
Episode 5:
Stinky is an inspector, and trying to find the culprit to Moominpapa’s manuscript being stolen. I didn’t have too many thoughts on this one, but I was mostly just thinking how nice it is to see Snork more involved in the episodes, he definitely slowly became a favorite of mine in this series. I didn’t mind Stinky too much either but I already knew he wouldn’t be the one to steal the manuscript and Moomin not believing him is fair to me considering how much of a thief Stinky is.
I also really loved how Moominpapa started to love hearing his wife’s tales of adventure, even if it sounded far fetched at first. I always really loved their relationship with how chaotic and supportive it is.
Episode 6:
Romance is in the air!! Mostly for Fillyjoink and Sniff. I actually did find the inspector and Fillyjoink to be cute, but 90’s nostalgia still makes me think of Mymble Jr. I also liked Fillyjoink this episode, mostly cuz I appreciate a Queen who knows her worth.
I also did like the bits with Mymble and Little My. Little My suffering with “older child being a parent to her siblings and mother” Is honestly tragic. I felt bad for her, and even appreciated that she didn’t reciprocate with Mymble reaching out to her, cuz honestly, she really doesn’t deserve it. I’m wondering if this was why Mymble Jr. isn’t present, cuz honestly, I love Little My in this series, and seeing how she was treated by Mymble made me sad, but also made me smile knowing it didn’t waver her from pointing out when something sounds stupid to her.
I always liked Little My and Sniff’s friendship as well. Her and Sniff having fun after dealing with the mushiness of love that day honestly made me smile and laugh at the end. It reminded me of their friendship in the 90’s series.
Sniff also got hit with a “love potion” and Sniff really doesn’t care for whatever gender he thought he was in love with. He truly is a bi/pan icon. I didn’t get the bit where Sniff and Stinky are canon or… really understood it?? Idk maybe I wasn’t understanding the context correctly. But looking back at the 90’s version, there were moments with them trying to find riches together so I think I can understand why it’s a ship. A pretty underrated ship but I don’t mind it.
Episode 7:
Moominmama takes place in the art competition. I’m still on 90’s nostalgia so it’s baiscally just that art competition with Moominpapa but this time it’s with Moominmama. We have seen her paint before so it makes sense, but it’s honestly really fun seeing Moominpapa want to be her muse, and even getting it at the end of the episode.
It’s mainly Moominmama learning to stick with what makes her happy, along with Little My “helping” because it’s rewarding.
Also, the Hemulen who collects stamps is here! His purple dress gown, is truly iconic. I recognised it immediately. I remember this moment is in the Hobgoblin arc in the books, but it’s interesting it’s a separate arc here. And instead of flowers, he’s taken to photography of local wildlife, which isn’t too far fetched from the real thing.
Also Moomin keeps all the letters Snufkin gave him in a neat pile tied in string under his bed… and remembered the stamp used on them… so… 🤭
Episode 8:
Snufkin comes to Moominvalley in the winter! Mostly due to the winter being so fierce. And Moomin, of course, is god damn excited by this. It reminds me of this one fanfic I read, but besides that, I kept hoping Moomin would take a moment to fully listen to Snufkin about why he came over, but hey, Snufkin loves Moomin too much to upset him and honestly, him and Moomin were very cute when they hung out. Snufkin’s probably the only one who laughs at Moomin’s bad jokes so that’s pretty silly.
Sniff took the place of Sorry-O where he thinks he’s the ancestor of wolves which…. Buddy you look nothing like a wolf, but feed your ego I guess. But he also ended up being the annoyance (along with the woodies) that led Snufkin to leave, which… I never liked how Sniff was done in this adaptation. I don’t like to hate Sniff really, cuz he’s honestly pretty lovable in the 90’s version. I only got the impression he’s just not good at reading the room cuz of how prideful he is, that’s all.
Too-Ticky is here too, and honestly her and Little My hanging out is pretty cute!! They’ve hung out before in the 90’s, and I’ve always loved Too-Ticky’s added warmth in the series. She’s wonderful. I don’t think she ever interacted with Snufkin this episode though… it feels like a missed opportunity.
Episode 9:
It’s still winter, but hey, who doesn’t like a winter episode, and even better, it’s JOXTER!!!
I still think his voice is deeper than I thought. (I will forever still have John Chancer as his voice in my head) He just sounds like a hardcore stoner, and honestly, I love how chill and goofy he is. And his song at the end was absolutely beautiful. My sister pointed out that there was even a harmonica in the song…. I wish this meant it was a reunion song for Snufkin and Joxter but I already know that’s not the case.
Besides that, I do like Moominpapa and Moomintroll’s time together. It’s nice seeing Moomin continue to build up his father. Cuz genuinely, he is pretty extraordinary and a really fun guy.
Little My and Moominmama hanging out is cute too. Mama’s commentary at the end where she wishes someone also talks about the warmth provided at the end of a journey is also sad but touching. I think I’d like to do that if I write anything.
Episode 10:
Basically the vampire episode from the 90’s.
And the Groke is there too… but it’s mostly Little My and Snorkmaiden hanging out to find her. It did lead to a very sweet understanding between Little My and the Groke. I always loved the tragedy of the Groke, and how misunderstood she is.
Also my sister headcanoned the reason Joxter can speak to animals was because he was absolutely baked when he started talking to one.
Episode 11:
Aunt Jane!! And bad words become tiny creatures when spoken :0
Aunt Jane, though strict, does love Moominpapa, and at least is aware of the fact she can be stern at times. My sister also commented, we never understand our caregivers/parents actions until we’re older, and that’s honestly a great thing to take from that episode.
Joxter also fleeing the scene at uncomfortable situations is truly a Snufkin move. He truly is Snufkin’s father…. Too bad THEY DONT MEET!! At least Little My and Snufkin have fun sibling moments. I love them honestly. They’re so chaotic together. And the fact they took the punishment from Aunt Jane even when they didn’t have to is funny to me.
Episode 12:
COMET IN MOOMINVALLEY!!! The intro sounds and looks different too, and it’s a longer episode.
I personally haven’t read Comet in Moominland/Moominvalley, but I’ve been given context and I believe it’s supposed to be a tale of environmental destruction, or the negative emotions regarding it… I could be wrong though, someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
Honestly, it’s hard to believe in the idea that Season 4 is a prequel. Because from Snufkin’s remarks, it seems Moomin already knows what they’d encounter on the way to the observatory. So from the sound of it, the comet is essentially arriving a second time. But at the same time, it could be Snufkin knows this simply cuz he’s travelled there a few times, but Moomin knows what they are so it’s oddly confusing.
Snufkin also feels more… closer? To Moomintroll? He was supposed to go alone, but Snufkin seems to want to make sure he doesn’t, and my sister pointed out he looked more devastated at the idea of Moomin going alone than Snorkmaiden in that regard.
They also act like some of their adventures are actually a build up to this moment, such as the sun oil from the Fire Spirit episode, and Little My’s relationship with the Groke. It’s not bad but… for me it felt weirdly wrong… and I don’t understand why I felt that way.
The Comet in the episode, isn’t considered a threat either.. it originally was thought to just be a spectacle worth a party. It’s only when the plants start withering and the water starts evaporating and it turns out that it may actually hit the valley that they’d take it seriously.. or, not as seriously as most hoped. I understand they want to try have a positive outlook on a catastrophic situation but… it’s supposed to be a melancholic tale.. it’s also supposed to be the origins of how Moomin met all his friends, and it was rumored to be a movie after the series, not a season finale… their despair towards the situation felt really brief because they tried to find a silver lining to it all, and thus the tone of the entire episode feels… off. We’re not given time to join in on the emotions the characters we’re feeling, and though we know it will work out, we can’t really join them on that feeling either because how can we, when the feeling of despair is constantly being thwarted by unwabing positivity in a dire situation? Moomintroll felt like the only one taking it seriously but unfortunately still suffers from his panic being killed off by hope and happiness.
I also now understand the “Groke sacrificed herself” part. Considering the Comet is a beautiful, warm light she can reach for… but now I’m wondering how the heck she managed to stop the comet like that??? Or better yet, it’s implied she still lives but… what exactly happened to the comet? Did it just fall into the ocean as the Groke freezed it over? Did the impact of the comet colliding with the Groke make it explode? And in the end you’re just left with this bitterness… like there was something you were supposed to be feeling but you can’t feel it.
Overall, the season in my opinion, did have a okay start, then got pretty good, and then fell on its face at the end. It did have some good episodes, but the beginning didn’t make me too excited at first for the rest of the season, and end to me felt like we should expect something new, but if anything, I’d rather have something more instead of something new. Unless that new thing adds to the more I want, it just felt flat.
In terms of Snufmin content as well, I can see why people thinks it’s lacking… I’ll argue that I think the reason for this is because… well, that Snufmin arc finished back in Season 3. They’ve grown to understand each other now. And I think from the dialogue in episode 8, they’ve already learned to give each other what they want, and manage their time together. Cuz as much as Snufkin wants to be alone, he also didn’t stop Moomintroll from spending time with him, and Moomin understands that he needs that alone time, and thus wanted to have time to just… be silent together. Just the two of them. It’s only because it got interrupted by the Woodies and Sniff that Snufkin left.
Heck, Snufkin was the one who suggested to the others to go with Moomintroll to the observatory, and never left his side.
I will agree there was definitely more Moomin and Snorkmaiden hangouts than there was of Snufkin and Moomin, but as much as I am an avid fan of Snufmin and wished they hung out more, the moments with Moomin and Snorkmaiden felt more friendly than couple-like until the finale. More platonic. That could just be me though.
To anyone who decided to read this entire thing, I hope your eyes aren’t burning. Rest your eyelids. And maybe give me your own thoughts on some of these. I’d love to read them all.

moomins adultification problem
I recently read some posts by  @writers-in-moominvalley and felt inspired to do my own. so i decided to make
moomins adultification problem
what do I mean by this? I mean that the community treats moomin like an adult/teen when he.... isn't. sorta. so to explain,  MOOMIN IS VERY MUCH A KID. in the moomins debut book “moomins and the great flood” moomin and sniff are shown to be young. both in height difference and in behaviour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
moomin is shown as small, infantile, and naïve. hell, theres even a scene in the book where moomin and sniff eat so much candy in a willy wonka type candyland that they get tummy aches and even throw up!
Tumblr media
comet in moominvalley also takes it time proving this theory further, moomin spends his time building a swing and playing with sniff at the beach. moomin is shown to not particularly care about the pearls worth, but rather it being pretty, later, he goes home and gives it too his mom. hes still shown to be very childish, such as the scene nobody seems to remember from the books in which they walk into a store, take some things, and then are surprised once its revealed that they have to pay. luckily, the old lady running the store is kind and decides to let them take these things without paying. moomin is also shown to be naive in this story and desperately tries to impress snorkmaiden and fantasizes a bit.
in finn family moomintroll he plays hide and seek with his friends, as well as doing many things children would do like playing tarzan. notice something? this is not “teenage behaviour” some people point out there are time skips between books, which is correct, but ill let this timeline here do the talking
Tumblr media
so why do people age moomin up? After a helpful comment I decided to rewrite this, perhaps they were introduced to moomin through the moominvalley 19 series, which ages up moomin.
