Mcyt Jukebox Bonanza Event!

Jukebox Bonanza is an MCYT multi-fandom event held during the month of september where artists will take songs of their choice and create illustrations based on these songs. This is called a Jukebox Night, and it was popular in the hermitcraft fandom circa 2019. This event seeks to revitalize the tradition and create some fun art.

Every participant who makes at least one Jukebox Night will get their named added to the Jukebox Bonanza hall of fame, and artists who make more can reach higher tiers of victory! This event can be either casual or hardcore, depending on how many drawings each individual wants to make. (Sign-ups will be open for the duration of the event, so feel free to drop in even if it's halfway through September!)

Timeline:

August 17: The signup form drops and the discord server opens (having a discord account is required for participation in this event.)

August 24: song claims open! Each song behind a jukebox night for jukebox bonanza must be unique, so artists will claim a song before they begin drawing.

August 28: All first claims should be assigned. Once you receive confirmation of your claim, you can begin drawing. Additional claims continue throughout the month as individuals finish one jukebox night and request another song as desired.

September 30: creation period ends. You can't start any new drawings after this, but it's okay to finish one during the posting period.

September 30-October 7: posting period! Post all your jukebox nights and tag this blog so we can reblog the posts here. At the end, the mods will count up all the jukebox nights to declare the final illustration count and award victory tiers.

Who are the mods here?

There are two mods on this blog and on the discord server: Mod Idea (@paradoxlemonade) and Mod Ghost (@gay-ghosts).

Who can participate in this event?

Participation is open to all fans of MCYT ages 13+.

What's a jukebox night?

A jukebox night is a single completed illustration based on a song. They were usually square back in the day so they looked like the could fit on an album cover, but that wasn't a hard rule. Some had lyrics in the picture itself, and others had them below the drawing. For this event, a drawing is considered complete when it is fully colored and/or shaded.

What fandoms can I make a jukebox night for?

Although this tradition originated in the hermitcraft fandom, all MCYT fandoms are eligible for this event. Small MCYT, old MCYT, new MCYT, popular MCYT, and anything else are all fair game. If it's minecraft and it's videos, you can make a Jukebox Night for it.

What songs can I claim?

Most songs are fair game, but there are a few stipulations: Songs must not be graphically about sex or contain graphically sexual content, as this event is open to artists age 13-17. Additionally, no songs made by Wilbur Soot/Lovejoy are eligible for this event.

How do song claims work?

If you participated in mcytblr AU fest, then you might be familiar with this process. A google form will be posted at a determined time and all participants will fill it out. You must list at least one song, but you can name up to five. The first person to claim a particular song will be the one to receive it, so it's advised that you list a few in case your first choice is unavailable.

Once you finish your first Jukebox Night, you can fill out the form again to claim another song and receive a second assignment. You can do this as many times are you want, but you can only get a new claim once the drawing for your previous one is completed.

What can I depict in a jukebox night?

Pretty much anything, within reason. Canon events, canon divergence, AUs, headcanons, you name it! Shipping and violence are fair game as well. We ask that art made for this event be about the characters, not real people. Additionally, art made for this event cannot contain sexual content of any kind or anything that would warrant an E rating on Ao3, as the event is open to artists age 13-17. If you're uncertain about an idea, please reach out to a mod for clarification.

“Where the fuck is Tommy?” Tubbo shouts. His voice goes largely unnoticed the first time, so he shouts again. This time it catches Wilbur’s attention. “What do you mean by ‘where is Tommy’, isn’t he eating?” Wilbur asks, perking up his eyebrow ever so slightly with a handful of papers in his hands. “He literally went out to piss a while ago, it has been like ten minutes-” Tubbo began as soon as Wilbur was close enough to hear. “In his costume?” Wilbur interjected. “In his costume, yes! Name: inquisitorhotpants - I joined Tumblr while I was very very into DAI, and then when that fandom fell by the wayside I was still writing an inquisitor, albeit a Sith inquisitor this time, so it still works. xD

Fandoms: SWTOR, the prequels in general, and uhhh ... that’s about it lately, unless something grabs my attention for a couple of weeks, like The Witcher did awhile back.

Where do you post: I post ficlets on here (when I remember to answer asks, sorry everyone who still has asks in my inbox), and everything else is over on my AO3.

Most popular one shot: Valhalla, a one-shot I wrote AGES ago (as in, I put it on AO3 when I joined there, but before that it was on FF.net) inspired by the celebration music at the end of ANH, in which Anakin turns up in, essentially, Jedi Valhalla. I’d probably tinker with it now, but I’ve decided i really should just leave it alone (and it has one of my favorite pieces of commissioned art, too).

Most popular multi chapter: Chaos & Opportunity. Originally intended as like, a 3 chapter crackfic, I had to create the ship tag for it on AO3, and now it’s turned into this whole trilogy that I’m exceedingly proud of. It’s made me stretch my worldbuilding wings, let me support a whole host of artists, develop my conlang skills, and bring in some of my favorite things from the franchise while also writing a story that I just really enjoy reading.

Favourite Story written: I probably have to stick with Chaos & Opportunity, because it’s given me the opportunity to work on so many unique and interesting things in the course of writing it.

Fic Nervous to post: LOL I’m always nervous when I post fic. My imposter syndrome game is strong. xD

How I choose titles: LABORIOUSLY. Most of the time it ends up being some part of a quote. If it’s a sappy chapter it’s probably from some obscure poem. There are a few that I was like “ahhh FUCK IT” and used the first thing that came to mind. The Very Dramatic Chapters are in Latin because I am not original. xD

Do I outline: I did once! Book 2 of Chaos & Opportunity was outlined, with my customary acerbic comments directly in the outline. Book 1 was really “lmao what happens next with these dinks?” and Book 3 is really “The Side Plot Bonanza,” so I haven’t needed it as much. For other multi chapter fics, I very rarely outline, ever.

Complete: Uhhh, yeahhhhhhh. Aside from one-shots, the only one that I’ve managed to finish thus far is Aberration, and that’s because it’s the only fic I had that had a definite beginning, middle, and end when I had the idea. Everything else is more like a meandering country road. xD

Coming soon?: I just published a chapter! xD  But hopefully the next chapter isn’t TOO far behind. I’m really just bouncing all over the place lately.

In progress: lmao literally everything else.

Prompts: I love prompts! I’m slow as fuck at getting to them, but I do love them. Plus now we’re rolling into the holiday season and i LOVE holiday/winter prompts so so much.

Upcoming work: I did design a cover for my holiday novella, so I’m re-releasing that this December, and at some point I’m going to finish the romcom the holiday novella goes with. xD

Most popular one shot: Of my short stories, it’s Never Stare, which I totally was never going to publish because it’s *just* smut and bad smut at that but I thought what the hell and now look. Regrets lol. 

Most popular Multi-Chapter: Flawless, my injured artist angst fest, by far, which is ironic because when I published I didn’t think anyone would read it! I wrote it mainly for myself to deal with chronic illness and the fear of loving, and next to PITS it’s my most personal story <3

Favorite story you wrote: Okay I always say this because it gets almost no love *sobs* IDK do you guys not like Christmas or something? (I kid) Reindeer Games is my quirky, kinky baby, yes it is a Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer AU, yes it has candy-cane dildos, no I am not accepting criticism 

Story you were nervous to post: For sure Promise in the Sky. I was worried the themes would be too dark for fandom in general and that I hadn’t communicated my message well enough, and as it’s basically my life in AU form, I had all the jitters. Needlessly, though, as people have been so incredibly kind and supportive. It remains the most healing thing I’ve ever done. I’ve been thinking about it a lot today, actually, since it’s NCOD. It pretty much lives in my head on a loop, I escape to its happy ending often. 

How do you choose your titles: Ooooo, well, usually I try to think up something short and catchy that ties into the moral/climax/meaning of the story. Actually thinking up titles is something I quite enjoy, I love bridging plot dots with an over-arching word/phrase!

Do you outline: If you call my sequential scribbles in multiple notebooks outlining, yes. 

Complete number of stories: 10 (I am but a baby ficling!) 

In progress: OH um, the Bonanza AU, the Louisiana Jones AU, Gargoyle AU, I guess Fairy AU, and The Garden 

Do you accept prompts: Probably not, if I’ve not thought up a thing myself I can tend to feel guilty about using it. Although I have had prompts from friends for my mermaid AU, and my first ever story was inspired by a random tumblr post, so! 

Upcoming story you are most excited about: Finishing the rest of The Garden is my major goal this fall. I have pages and pages of scribbles and scripture and alternate interpretations and pure sacrilegious blasphemy, it’s amazing. I’m SO excited about it. This story fits so well into the HL universe I’m a little surprised, but I suppose all soulmate/true love stories do lol ;)

Favorite Story You Wrote: Goodness why must I pick amongst my babies??? I actually do go back and forth depending on the day, but... Unsent Correspondence still holds a very special place in my heart

Story You Were Nervous to Post: It feels like cheating to say Smoke and Sand, since it was my first fic I had written and posted in like ten years, and in a new fandom to boot. Beyond that, I think Unsent Correspondence, because I was really emotionally attached to the project, kind of went out on a limb exploring the limits of Theron’s characterization (that the game later verified with the tr8r arc), and as a whole it’s such a drastically different approach to storytelling I wasn’t sure if it was going to put people off.

How Do You Choose Your Titles: Lots of sobbing and alcohol? I obsess over titles a lot of the time as well as descriptions, because I feel like they’re kind of part of “marketing” your fic to readers? And also I really, really suck at them most of the time and spend way too long on Wikipedia or quote websites or the dang thesaurus trying to find something that will work.

Do You Outline: It depends on the type of work I’m writing. On something smaller I might just write straight out, getting the idea(s) onto paper as quick as possible. The longer and more detailed a story starts to get, the more I begin to outline. Finishing up By Guidance of the Stars, I would actually go through several draft outlines, from a summary, that’d be expanded to me basically word vomiting what I wanted to happen or just me arguing with myself on what I’d forgotten, that I would then take and actually write liner notes that was half-actual narration and dialogue, half a gist of a sentence, before I went in and filled it out with real words and grammar. I kind of seem to discover a new process every week, depending on what mode my brain is in.

Complete: Okay I’m just gonna count SWTOR stuff to make my number crunching easier... between multichaptered fic and prompts... 80 -- dear lord that’s a lot more than I realized it was.

In-Progress: I will count what’s only currently published and unfinished and that number is... ONE. The Date Night fic, which no one really realizes is unfinished because each part is self-contained. But I know it’s unfinished and that bugs the heck out of me.

Coming Soon: I had to open Scrivener for this. And for this I will count what only currently has an actual word count or outline (and is not just an idea floating in my head that I haven’t written down) so... 10. One of which is actually really close to being done, I just have to wrap it up. And I have, um, a few unfinished prompts in my askbox.*shifts guiltily* Sorry about that...

Do You Accept Prompts: I do, and apparently I really like writing them because that ridiculously high completed count? Like a good 80-85% of that number are prompts  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: Oh god, it’s not even on my numbers above because I technically haven’t even started a document or outline yet, just talked my poor friends’ ears off about it -- but it’s a canon-divergent AU I’m tentatively calling “Chance Encounters”, where Theron and Grey meet aboard the Esseles, and by random happenstance continue to bump into each other at various points in the Vanilla storyline. It’s stupidly adorable and angsty at points, but I’m going to finish these other things first.

Gosh there are so many good blogs out there that I’m certain I’ll miss some, but! Here are a few blogs I enjoy writing with! I wasn’t sure if you wanted general RP blog recs or western-specific recs, so this is a bit of a mishmash of genres and characters:

@allnostalgic​ - Multi-muse. Very sweet person with a nice variety of muses! Most of them are animated, I believe, but they also write Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2. They put a lot of thought into their muses and they’re just in general a nice person to have on the dash. 

@ambihextrcus​ - DC Comics’ Jonah Hex. I don’t know a lot about this character, but I do love how this person writes and it’s always excellent to see more western muses around. 

@bastardswxrd​ / @wisenedup​ - Multi-muse / Bill from The Last of Us. MY DARLIN’. Possibly one of the people I have the most threads with. On their multi, their primary muse is their supernatural alien OC, Bezi, who is very well-thought out and fun to write with, but they also write Klaus from The Umbrella Academy, Hancock from Fallout 4, and a number of other muses. On Bill (TLOU), they also guest Bill from Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2.

@bluebracelet​ - Jim Hopper from Stranger Things. I’m not actually sure they’re not Hop??? They have a fantastic writing style and their love for Hopper really shows in how they write him. He feels real and frankly more IC than the show. Overall, a great person in the RPC.

@cajuncur​ - Cryptid / Southern Gothic OC. I haven’t written much with them yet, but hoo-boy. I love them. Their character voice is entertaining and I really dig their aesthetic. They make me wish that there were more characters like this within the RPC. Definitely worth checking out!

@clockworkmadness​ - Fiddleford McGucket from Gravity Falls. I LOVE THEM. Fiddleford is probably one of my favorites from Gravity Falls and they bring a lot of depth and respect to his character. 10/10 highly recommend 1 genius old hillbilly man. Even if you’re not familiar with the show, I suggest you take a peek at their blog.

@innocentmanwithabounty​ - Vin Tanner from The Magnificent Seven (TV series). I don’t know a lot about the TV series, but I do love this blog and I love the mun’s writing! They’re always very nice and pleasant to have on the dash. 

@motherwitch​ - Endora from Bewitched. Everyone’s favorite red-headed witch. ♥ Lovely mun, lovely writing, and so much love for both Endora and Agnes Moorehead. They put a lot of thought and care into everything they write and you can see it. Very classy and elegant, just like Mrs. Moorehead.

@myxcenterxstage​ - Historical OC. Not specifically western, but does have a western verse which I write with them! Both a fantastic writer and artist, I’m so happy to have them as a friend and I highly recommend giving their blog a looksee. Their OC is well-developed and very, very charming.

@patiencetaught​ - Jennifer Honey from Matilda. I haven’t written much with this blog either, but they write a beautiful Miss Honey. Their blog, their muse, and their writing style all feels like a warm cup of tea. Charming and sweet and warm.

@psychicsass​ - Charlotte Jane from The Mentalist. I cannot stress how much their version of Charlotte should have been canon. I love her. Both mun and muse are amazing and so much thought has gone into fleshing Charlotte out into the character she is. Worth checking out even if you’re not familiar with The Mentalist! I believe they also have a western verse. 

@standunshaken​ - Western multi-muse. I haven’t written as much as I’d like to with them, but from what I have written, I enjoy their writing style and overall flow. If you’re looking for some western muses, I’d give their blog a peek. 

@talktoten​ - The Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who. I’ve followed this blog for as long as I can remember, quite possibly almost all of my ~7 years of writing on Tumblr. So... clearly I think they’re worth following! Excellent flow, tight grip on their character voice, positive, and one of the best Tenth Doctors I’ve ever seen. 

@therapadalis - Multi-fandom OC. Theraaaa! I love Thera. Great writing style, lovely, realistic OC who fits pretty much any universe or scenario, and all-around just very fun to write with. Their writing is full of wit and charm and I highly recommend checking them out. 

@timegoesbyforusall​ - Multi-muse. I’ve only written with their Bonanza muses, but I’ll say that they’re very fun to write with and friendly. The way they write Hoss especially tells me that they have a great love for their muses and I can hear the Cartwrights’ voices clearly in their dialog.  

@wcnderwitch​ - Witch OC. PRECIOUS DARLING. Writing with them (and talking to them OOC) is such a pleasant experience. I haven’t written too much with them yet, but I hope to write more. From what I’ve seen, their muse is very flexible and the mun is eager to accommodate and plot. I love their enthusiasm and all the good vibes. ♥

@williamofwestworld - William / The Man In Black from Westworld. THE RPC NEEDS MORE GOOD VILLAINS. And I am SO happy to see this blog around. I appreciate the care that goes into writing William and commend anyone who has the guts to write bad guys on this hellsite. I can tell that they’ve thought a lot about their muse and how they humanize him and make him feel real without sacrificing his villain status and vice versa. It’s hard to find that balance, I think, and they do it very well.
