i don't wanna what-about which is why i'm not saying anything on the post but it is. i dunno. weird to me that the armenian genocide is the only anatolian genocide that people mention -- the ottoman empire & (later) turkey also attempted genocide against anatolian greeks and (til) assyrians during the same period (~1913-1923)

i only heard it called the "greek and rmenian genocide" when i was younger, it wasn't until later that i realized that's not the common usage

#bird original #“armenian and assyrian and greek genocide” is a mouthful #and i guess people only ever think “greek” means the peninsula so that's a source of confusion #i didn't even know there WAS an existing assyrian ethnic group #but i dunno.#when i was home for christmas this year i learned one of my uncles figured out which village my yaia came from.#he'd found some pictures on google maps. of a beautiful locally-known church tower that had been destroyed in the genocide #& which the surviving townspeople had gone to great lengths to restore -- i don't remember if it had gone back into use though #i should ask about that #i'm three generations of assimilation + outmarriage down so it's not like it's visceral generational trauma but it's ... weird. i dunno #it's weird.
