I’m sure this has already been talked about ad nauseam… but I can’t stop giggling at the fact that the writers really made best friends with the last names Sallow and Gaunt (that both look perpetually tired).

About something of ditoeftv/vadtd...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't understand why some comments saying that Eckles truly loved Penny and, in a some way, was pure... I mean, I understand that we all have our own interpretation of what love is, but... in my opinion, true love is when you build a relationship without ulterior motives and trust, but most important, when you fall in love with someone because of their true self. Eckles don't love Siyeon Cha (this is the real name of MC), he loves Penny's fake mask.
From the beginning, they both wore masks to interact with each other. They both had their own ulterior motives that they never spoke of it. Penny only wanted Eckles' interest, not his love. Meanwhile, Eckles at first wanted to try to kill her to escape and, later, he changed his mind and only tried to use her. Eckles knew from the beginning that Penny only wanted to use him for something, while Penny was slow to realize that Eckles was only pretending to be her knight. The worst mistake of the two was not putting the cards on the table.
Anyway, Penny just cared about raising the interest without paying attention to him (and I don't blame her, after knowing what the true objective of the game is, it's clear to me that the ancient magicians didn't care so much about the male protagonists, especially about his feelings. Why play with their feelings if there are other ways to increase their confidence?). Meanwhile Eckles, knowing that Penny was only using him, played his rol along until he became obsessed with her. But as I mentioned earlier, he only became obsessed with her fake mask. In fact, it is certain aspects, their personalities are similar and I firmly believe that this is what caused them to fail to trust each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I make a parenthesis:
This post is not for talking shit about Eckles, because seriously, he was the only one (along with Callisto at a certain point) who kept the main intention of the plot: a dangerous ML that could cause the death of Penny. I started reading this novel precisely because I liked the plot surrounded by death and the premise of an female lead vs. very dangerous male leads. I love this novel and and I consider it one of my favorites, but I won't deny that at a certain point the adrenaline of feeling that one ML could cause death was lost. I think it was the fact that the novel became more of a psychological drama and the thriller was shelved, although there were times it did reappear. But later I will write about this (this paragraph has a lot of text xD). And yes, I like plots with male leads that act like predators or grim reapers; who are we to judge(?
I close parentheses.
Tumblr media
Continuing with my point, Eckles' color bar was very dark (it almost looked like the color black) long before "Yvonne" appeared. I mention this because I will make a contrast with Derrick. This dude had a sick love for Penny, to the point that she mentions that she noticed how the magenta bird that he had in a cage in his office was an allegory of her. My point: Why did this mf have a color bar with light colors (orange, yellow and red) and not an almost black bar like Eckles?
As much as I think about it, I only have this conclusion: Derrick didn't become dangerous to Penny, unlike Eckles. In the novel we can see that Eckles' feelings are obsession and hatred, meanwhile Derrick only felt guilty about his own feelings for Penny. Yes, his love is sick but not enough to harm her (lol this seems justification, but no, I just want to understand the difference in the color of their bars).
Then, we have the side stories, where we see that Eckles has followed Penny in her archology activities for 5 years, without her knowing. I've seen people misrepresenting this spoiler, saying that he felt the need to protect her and he was protecting her from the dangerous monsters that appeared in the area... People... plis read the novel again! He admits that he followed her because he was curious because he had negative feelings towards her, a need to kill her. He admits that he felt bored because he had lost his memory, so when he felt those feelings for her, he started to follow her because he was curious. Then, Penny deduced that he was keeping her alive precisely because if she died then he would lose that curiosity.
So why would a person who "truly loved" Penny only feel the need to kill her?... In my opinion, he wanted to kill Siyeon because she had ruined Penny's fake mask. In the novel we can see that he is truly obsessed with this side of Penny, but he starts to feel more frustrating every time Siyeon starts being like her and not like the mask. Of course, there was also the matter that he couldn't see her with Callisto, but remember his bar was dark before he saw Callisto with Penny. In addition, Eckles' initial hatred for Penny was because she bought him.
Besides, I don't believe the fact that Eckles wouldn't have turned yandere if Penny had reciprocal feelings. Just look at Callisto, he would have hurt Derrick in the side stories if it weren't for the fact that he didn't bring his sword (and another things xD). The good thing is that, in the end, by interacting with Siyeon and not a fake mask, he decides to let go of those feelings and continue on his way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before making my conclusion I just want to add a piece of information:
Gwon Gyeoeul, the author of the novel, has other published books, but with a certain characteristic in all of them: the author really likes to deal with the topic of obsession.
Thus, in my conclusion: Eckles' role is playing an obsessed male lead but in a very dark way. That "love" he feels is an obsession not simply because of his true nature or some of Penny's "decisions", but because the author loves that topic. He even accepts that what Penny called violence was love for him. In the side stories, when Penny interacts with Eckles, a thought crosses her mind, which makes me think that its more of a clarification from the author: she thinks that Eckles' personality is originally twisted and that fact was hidden during the normal route... So, Eckles had no "true or pure" love for Siyeon, but... for her fake mask, definitely, there was. Twisted, but there was.

Hi! So I’ve been wondering on how to make a character look unique compared to other characters. Kathrine is my main character, but I feel like she doesn’t stand out. When I asked some other people how they thought was the main character, they mostly went with Felix or Indigo. The Silvers also have a problem with looking too different compared to the others, who are based off animals, but I couldn’t figure it out an animal that fit shadow or light magic at the time. Help would be appreciated!
Tumblr media
Wow, neat-looking characters! I actually would've guessed Coral was the MC, just because the high contrast between her colors and values led my eye immediately to her. Indigo's the only other character with such a large contrast, so that's probably why folks were gravitating there. It's like seeing huge spikes on a lie detector test; you just can't ignore them.
I'm sure these characters' location near the top of the image played a role as well since it gives them visual dominance over the others, especially in Felix's case. Western viewers' natural tendency will be to "read" a stacked lineup like this as if they were reading a page in a book; in other words, starting at the top left-hand corner, where Felix is.
So I might be wrong, but I’m guessing Felix and Hailey are Kathrine’s parents, though it looks like she resembles Hailey much more than Felix. If her palette had a more balanced mix of inspirations from both parents, it’d have a greater variety of colors and help her stand out from the other characters. Here are some experiments as to how that might look (starting with the original colors).
Tumblr media
Or perhaps some iridescent features? “Iridescence” is her last name, after all. Kind of on the nose, but it’s unique and eye-catching. (Using photo reference and multiple layers really helps here.)
Tumblr media
As for the Silvers, I figured a diurnal creature could represent light, and a nocturnal one could represent shadow. And it’d be cool if those creatures were similar in form, with the “light” one having a blue color and the “shadow” one sporting red, just like the characters.
Then it hit me.
Tumblr media
The blue morpho butterfly and cecropia moth fit these criteria perfectly. You might also consider animals native to your story’s setting, as well as which ones symbolically align with the characters’ personalities. This is just one possible jumping-off point.
I went ahead and revamped Indigo to reflect the combo of butterfly and moth traits, as well as integrate the red and blue in a more subtle way than two halves split down the middle. And for a play on his name, I figured I might as well throw in some purple too.
Tumblr media
Just a few ideas. Hope that helps!

Comparing ATLA’s Jet to Cowboy Bebop’s Spike
(this is so late, but. Happy birthday @the-hot-zone, hope you had an amazing day)
In my opinion, Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest shows ever created. It hits a lot of my personal favorite attributes in a TV show: cowboys, fantastic music, absolutely spectacular animation, really deep themes and characters with rich inner lives, worldbuilding that’s thought out. Simply put, it’s a masterpiece.
I started watching Bebop this summer, at the height of the ATLA Renaissance, and the first thing I noticed about protagonist Spike Spiegel is that he looked a hell of a lot like Jet from ATLA. And it wasn’t just the looks either: like Jet, Spike is the leader of a ragtag group of misfits living on the fringes of society. Like Jet, Spike is a smooth talker. Like Jet, Spike is compassionate and cares for other people, and like Jet, the world has hardened Spike to the point where his virtues can still lead him down the wrong path. And while Jet isn’t named for Spike, there’s a character in Bebop named Jet (he sort of plays the right hand person role that Smellerbee plays for Jet in ATLA.) They’re not completely similar--Spike isn’t fighting for anybody’s liberation, whereas for Jet that’s a core aspect of his character--but it was enough to make me wonder about how Jet was designed and how much influence Bebop had on his character design and on ATLA as a whole, and whether looking at Spike can illuminate some of the conversations we’ve been having about Jet.
A little about the inspiration and process of ATLA: Bryan and Michael were working on shows like Family Guy when they decided they wanted to make something more sincere and more cinematic. They were both really inspired by anime. Bryan said “Back in the late '90s I was getting pretty disillusioned with working on sitcoms -- then I saw Princess Mononoke and I was emboldened. My heart was so much closer to that kind of story, those kinds of characters and that type of tone. After that, Cowboy Bebop really inspired us in terms of being a great example of an epic series that had a wide breadth of tones. Then FLCL came along and rewrote the rules for everything, as far as I'm concerned!” I haven’t seen FLCL, I’ll admit, but having seen both Bebop and Princess Mononoke--yeah, I get that. Both are incredible pieces of art that, for me personally, make me want to push myself as an artist, and I cannot recommend both enough if you haven’t seen them already.
So, Bryan and Michael decide they want to make something inspired by shows like Bebop and movies like Princess Mononoke, they get a pilot order from Nickelodeon and, as is custom at the time, they start reaching out to East Asian animation studios to help them with the animation. This video is a great source for how ATLA in particular interacted in this environment, but suffice to say that Bryan built a relationship with the studio that did a lot of work for ATLA, JM Animation, and gave them a lot of creative freedom in making the visuals of the show. This included designing Jet and the rest of the Freedom Fighters.

[ID: An image of Jet from ATLA from the shoulders up against a sky background fading from blue at the top to white at the bottom. He had dark skin, shaggy black hair, black eyes, eyebrows turned way up, a smirk on his face, and some wheat in his mouth. He is wearing a red jacket with a gray popped collar. End ID]
Tumblr media
[ID: An image of Spike from Cowboy Bebop from the shoulders up against a sky blue background with trees behind him. He has shaggy dark brown hair that has a slight bit more curl in it than Jet’s, dark brown eyes, light skin, and a closed mouth smile on his face. He is wearing a blue suit with a yellow shirt that has a popped collar, and a skinny black tie/ End ID]
So, let’s look at the character design. Both Spike and Jet have these long, angular faces, shaggy dark hair, long necks, broad shoulders, dark eyes, some popped collar element to their attire, etc. While both characters are pretty tall and lanky, Spike’s height is more immediately obvious than Jet’s--in fact, I wouldn’t think of Jet as a tall character had I not seen some fandom height comparisons. The most obvious and immediate differences between how the characters physically look are their clothes, which are very different (likely due to the setting--ATLA is set in a proto-industrial war-torn society and Jet in particular has had to scavenge his clothes from Fire Nation troops, while Bebop is a space epic set in the far future), the lack of mouth wheat for Spike, Spike’s incredibly normal looking eyebrows versus Jet’s adorable long division eyebrows, and, of course, their skin tones. Colorism is something that people bring up a lot when talking about Jet’s character, and I have to wonder why Jet, a character that was so clearly inspired by this light-skinned character who was morally ambiguous in Bebop, was made darker-skinned when explicitly coded as a “villain” in ATLA.
In fact, colorism is a super important aspect of how Jet and Spike’s stories are told. To its credit, ATLA has two MCs (Sokka and Katara) with dark skin (not that the fanartists who whitewash them notice) while Bebop has just one (Ed). However, it’s important to note that Sokka and Katara are each portrayed in ways that Aang or other lighter-skinned characters in the show simply aren’t. For example, despite both characters being literal teenagers, they are sexualized within the text of the show. Another example of the colorism in ATLA is, of course, Jet, a Brown boy leading a resistance against oppressive colonialist imperialist forces, being so unambiguously vilified. Yes, within the text, Jet has some sense of complexity, especially in Book 2, but even that is undermined by his death at the hands of the Dai Li. Jet is never given the subjectivity of a character like Zuko. In fact, it’s pretty clear that Jet’s redemption and subsequent death happens when it does to demonstrate what Zuko is capable of if he makes the right choice. Whether or not this is a good decision writing-wise is another discussion, but the fact of the matter is that in using Jet to further Zuko’s arc, bryke used a Brown teenage boy/victim of imperialist violence to prop up the narrative of a light-skinned prince/perpetrator of imperial violence. This is not to say that Zuko shouldn’t have been redeemed or that Jet shouldn’t have died or that the narrative shouldn’t have dedicated time and attention to Zuko’s story, but it is to say that ultimately, the writers of the show decided that Jet’s subjectivity was a tool to further Zuko’s actualization.
Contrast this to Spike. Bebop is about a lot of things, but a core part of it is exploring Spike’s backstory and way of looking at the world. It’s part of what makes the show the show. It’s the thing that keeps you liking the guy even when he says or does something absolutely unconscionable. Nothing in the show is more important than Spike’s subjectivity. The show may have individual episodes that focus on the other main characters, but it’s pretty clear that it’s really *about* Spike. Where does Spike come from? What is his obsession with the past? Why do all these people want to kill him? Who is Julia? These are all prescient questions that I had as a viewer of Bebop, and these were questions that were not only important to understanding Spike Spiegel, but to understanding the narrative that the writers, director, and animators are telling. Bebop is nothing without Spike’s subjectivity, and the people behind the show invest in his narrative even though he does some pretty horrible things! (kills many people, is part of a crime syndicate at one point, says some pretty misogynistic crap, hell, the whole concept of the show is that he and his buddies hunt people down for money.) As I said before, Spike is morally ambiguous, an antihero, and the people behind Bebop run with that, because that is an integral part of the story that they’re telling.
You could certainly argue that ATLA, being a show for children, needs clear heroes and villains, to be unambiguous in its depiction of right and wrong. And to an extent that would be correct. But let’s not forget that ATLA is not shy in its depiction of morally ambiguous characters. That’s an integral part of what the show is. Characters like Zuko, Iroh, Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee are beloved despite (or perhaps because of) their complex moral frameworks. Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee in particular move between designations of villain, victim, and hero pretty fluidly (Iroh and Azula are two other conversations in themselves.) I personally am okay, and in fact delighted, to have Zuko, Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee in the show because I think their stories and the ways that they move between evil, good, and morally gray are incredibly compelling. We know why they act the way they do, and we can condemn or validate their actions while always knowing exactly where they’re coming from.
But then I see Jet. Jet, whose village was burned down by the Fire Nation. Jet, who survived by himself and helped 5 other people survive along the way, while leading an organized resistance against the Fire Nation on wits alone. Jet, who somehow ended up in Ba Sing Se, his new family cut in half, wanting to start over. So much of him is a blank slate. Where Spike in Bebop, or Zuko, Iroh, Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee in ATLA, get fleshed out, have the writers convey specific information that helps the audience understand their actions and motivations, even if they’re wrong, Jet never gets that sort of care in his narrative. Jet never gets to be the center of ATLA, even for a moment, even in his own death. There’s always something more pressing, something more meaningful, than Jet. You could argue (I certainly would) that the show would be better if we spent more time with him, if the writers cared to understand him, but unlike Bebop and Spike, the show doesn’t revolve around the audience understanding Jet. The story is coherent without him. In book 3, despite the fact that Jet sacrificed his life for them, the Gaang only brings up Jet once, and that’s to condemn him. Jet’s story is a tragedy, an important one, but only insofar as it props up other pieces of the narrative. And that’s the most tragic part of it.

First chapter preview:
Chapter 1
"Eff you! Eff me! Eff the world!" She shrieked with her lungs, hand pointed at the sky.
"I wanna hold guns and look cool in suits! I wanna be pardoned by university to become a boss! I wanna have a gang while playing background music!"
"IF I EVER REINCARNATE TO KATEKYO HITMAN REBORN, I'LL BECOME VONGOLA DECIMOOOOOOOO!"
Darkness enveloped her as she sunk deeper into the abyss, not knowing what was going on after that flash that blinded her eyes. Could it be isekai truck-kun? She scoffed at her own words, not believing a single thing that came out of her own thoughts. She felt a shuffle, then a thump as her whole world lifted in the air. Suddenly, a baby's cry chortled beside her, screaming.
What was going on? Was she being carried into some kind of ambulance? A hospital? Did she give birth-What? But she was still 19 years old and never touched a man's hand! The baby's cry grew louder, almost piercing her in the ears.
Was it even possible for her to remain conscious even though she couldn't open her eyes? She tried lifting her eyelids, but it remained glued shut, as if this impenetrable force was clamping down her eyes, telling her not to look.
A waft of air blew on her chest.
"[Papa! Look at them! Twins!]"
A woman's voice rang out loudly, but her tone was soft and melodic as the sounds of humans floated into her ears.
'...Japanese?'
"[Ah, but one isn't crying.]"
A man's voice rang out this time in front of her as she tried deciphering the words with all her experiences of watching anime for over 10 years. Crying? Did the man just say that 'one isn't crying?' Was he pointing to someone in the room?
She felt her whole world tip over before trying to flail, confusion ringing inside her mind before-
Slap!
"Waaaaaaaaah!"
'What the eff, bro?!'
She felt so sensitive-so...naked!
'Call my lawyer! I will sue you till you don't even have the freedom of speech! Lawyer! Lawyer!'
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalw!" She yelped her syllables that couldn't pop out of her mouth and tried again.
"Wawawawa-"
Something was weird. Very weird.
"[I think we've got ourselves a little weirdo from the get-go!]"
Her butt stung as she tried blinking her eyes, gasping twice and shaking her head to wake her up from this bad dream. Her vision stung the moment she did, lights blinding her as she screamed again, trying to bat away the light with her flimsy small fists. Through her blurry vision, she saw a man grinning from ear to ear before throwing her over his shoulder and patting her on the back. She humped, dry launching from the action as the woman's soft laughter rang from behind as her own eyes closed shut again.
What did she see? She didn't see clearly, but the world was so...colorful.
"[I think I have a name for this little weirdo already!]"
Name? What name? What the hell were these two strangers talking about? And why in the hell was she able to understand Japanese so clearly? And they messed up her pronouns-and-
She tried hard, fighting her clamped eyes, 'Almost there!'
"Sawada Isago! Golden dust for my career!"
Isago slammed his eyes open, blinking rapidly at the man who was now throwing his small body into the air, his golden-amber eyes completely dazzling Isago.
"Waah da dak."
His first words were swear words in English.
She stared absentmindedly out the front porch. No, he stared absentmindedly out the front porch this fine morning. The sky was bright blue while Isago glanced at the buzzing street of Namimori, a small town located at the edges of Japan. In the corner of his eyes, he saw a small bird land on one of the tree branches before someone tapped him on the shoulder.
"Isa..go! Let's play!" Tsuna smiled sweetly at his younger brother, holding up his teddy in one hand. They were at the young age of four, Tsuna being born just minutes earlier than Isago. They seemed like twins, but one preferred a shorter hairstyle than the other, and their hair was in different colours.
"Hm...sure! What do you want to play?" Isago answered like how a four-year-old should and pushed himself onto his feet. Tsuna squeezed his teddy, pondering a bit before tilting his head to the side.
Tsuna was exactly the same in the anime, with spiky brown hair and brown eyes that shone brightly in the sun, his soft features held more of some baby fat than what was portrayed in the graphics, but still, Tsuna resembled Vongola Primo.
'Definitely a descendant of the Vongola family,' Isago quirked his lips as Tsuna explained his game of hide and seek, except the purpose was to hide and find teddy.
"Sure!" Isago chirped, holding his hand out for the teddy. "I'll go first then, since you never do, Tsuna."
Tsuna beamed brightly at his younger brother, giving his teddy over before Isago pointed to a wall in the corner of the room and Tsuna plodded over, covering his eyes as he started to count down from 100. Isago smiled slightly, tip-toeing to the washroom and turning on the lights to hide the teddy behind the rows and rows of shampoo bottles in one of the cupboards.
Isago frowned a bit when he realized that he couldn't reach the board, placed the teddy on the table and walked to the toilet that was beside the sink. He stepped onto the toilet, using it as his stepping stone and slammed his small hands onto the table, heaving himself upwards. Snatching the teddy from the original spot, Isago opened the cupboard and organized the bottles as a coverup, arranging the bottles so that not even the ears of the brown toy were visible from an adult's point of view.
Isago stepped down the table, plopping quietly onto his feet before listening to the countdown from Tsuna's mouth at the number 40. Isago smiled carefully, closing the lights as his gold eyes flashed through the mirror once, and Isago made his way to Tsuna's bedroom. Mom was cooking in the kitchen and humming about dad's arrival today.
Isago had retained his father's golden eyes, and yet had a shade of mocha as his hair color. Neither dad nor mom had the hair color, but Nana assumed that it was because her predecessor's hair color was close to black in the past. In contrast to Tsuna's spiky hair, Isago had flatter hair and was long, to the point that it was possible to tie it into a semi-ponytail. He had bangs covering the front in a slanted way, almost completely contrasting to Tsuna's cute and fluffy hair. Well, not that it mattered to Isago.
What was concerning to Isago, was that he was born as a boy.
"Ready or not, here I come!"
Isago heard Tsuna call from the bottom of the stairs before his small footsteps plattered onto the wood. Isago stared momentarily at the door before purposefully closing it and plopping down on Tsuna's bed. The bedsheets ruffled, crinkling a bit and Isago stared at his own crotch.
What the heck, this was so weird to have. It was so tiring to constantly have a thing dangling in between his legs. Even though it didn't hurt or feel uncomfortable, this new addition was a very mind-blowing...experience. Manspreading was also a new thing.
"Isago…?" Tsuna's face peeped into his own room and giggled before skipping over to his brother. "You must have placed teddy here!"
"I don't know," Isago replied with a small smirk. "Why don't you try and find it?"
"Teddy! Teddy!" Tsuna called cutely as if the bear was able to reply back to him.
"Tsuna, if you can find it then I'll ask mom to make your favourite Salisbury steak that she only makes when dad comes home!" Isago called as Tsuna's eyes fired up intensely.
"Steak! Steak! Steak!" Tsuna batted his fists on his crouched knees and started to chant it like some kind of song. Joy could be seen all over his face as he rustled his piles of stuff in the closet, then turned over to his desk and started rummaging in the drawers.
"Steak, steak, steaky, steak-"
Isago smiled secretly, knowing that Tsuna had no knowledge of dad coming home today. Honestly, Isago didn't know what to describe his dad. A good dad? No, he left his wife basically widowed from the moment they were born. A bad dad? You couldn't say that either.
Then again, mama never worked, so it was plausible to think that the house was bought and supplied with money from dad every year. Not to mention that the house was quite large for a family of three. Dad was probably also preparing the house to be the main hideout for the future Vongola.
"Iemitsu Sawada, huh?" Isago murmured his dad's name under his lips.
There was a reason why his dad stationed his family near the unknown town of Namimori. It was probably in order to protect them from the mafia. So in the end, was he a good dad? Isago watched Tsuna's fluffy hair swish in the lights as the sound of tires echoed into the neighborhood.
Isago lifted his eyebrows at the sound, turning his head to Tsuna's open window to see a short black car parked a few meters away from the Sawada residence. Isago stood up slowly, walking towards the window and hopped onto a small step box and leaned on the wall, crossing his arms together as he peered outside.
"Tsuna, let's rank this game harder. You have exactly 100 seconds like the countdown to find your teddy, or else the promise is off," Isago turned to Tsuna who's eyes widened like saucers, gasping before throwing his hands into the depths of his drawers.
"That's not fair, Isago!" The boy whimpered as Isago started to count the numbers from 100, forcing the small boy to sweat. Inside, Isago spotted a blond head popping out of the driver's seat.
The man was wearing orange overalls that were only pulled onto his waist. His dirty sweatshirt was worn in a fashion that showed his armpit hair clearly even from far away. The sight was disgusting.
"Men," Isago made a face, recognizing that it was his father. "66...67...68...69…"
"Isago! Slow down!" Tsuna wailed and rummaged through his toy box, tears streaming down his face at the decreasing numbers. Iemitsu pulled a construction hat out of the front side, then walked to the passenger's seat, opening the door to reveal another man wearing a blue vacation shirt with pink flowers on it.
The man stepped out of the car, smiling widely at his assistant who passed him a straw hat. As if the man noticed, his eyes flashed to the window, meeting the gaze of Isago. There was curiosity and wonder that passed through the male's eyes, but then greeted the child by lifting his hat and giving a salute which Isago returned with a polite nod.
'Vongola ninth,' Isago addressed the man quickly, curling his lips at the status before turning back to Tsuna, the numbers ending with the last count of zero.
"Isaaaagoo!" Tsuna sobbed into his long-sleeved sweater, sniffing as the sleeve soaked up his snot. "I couldn't find it-I'm sorry!"
Isago's eyes softened at the small boy, hopping down from the stepping box before crouching next to Tsuna who was on his knees.
"Tsuna, Tsuna, why are you sorry?" Isago patted Tsuna on the shoulders. Tsuna threw his arm down, staring at Isago who had a soft smile on his face.
"Be-because Isago's favorite...also steak…" the young boy blew his wet cheeks and Isago chuckled, pulling his brother into a large hug. That was not exactly true, Isago's favourite was sweet parfaits rather than savory main course meals, but Nana had never brought the two to a sweets cafe so Isago had made up his preferences to match Tsuna's.
"How about this, I'll magically transform the steak onto the table if you promise me one thing," Isago patted Tsuna who blew into his shoulder. Momentarily, Isago made a face of disgust, but once thinking that they were from the same blood, a smile was forcefully plastered onto his soft features.
Tsuna also realized his own misdoings, instantly freezing before wiping his own sleeve on Isago's shoulder, trying to correct the snot, only to make it smear even wider on the hoodie.
"I'll have to change my clothes," Isago sighed before pushing Tsuna away and walking to his own room. Tsuna followed like an abandoned puppy. His two fingers fiddled as he watched Isago pull his T-shirt off, and grabbed a random sweater before pulling it over his head.
"Mm sorry Isago…" Tsuna trailed off, staring guilty on the ground as Isago's head emerged out. "I will promise anything that you want! Forever!"
'What a dangerous promise, Tsuna,' Isago's eyes glimmered before turning towards his brother. The shadows in his room casted upon Isago's face as his grin widened almost too maliciously.
"Then promise me Tsuna, no matter what the circumstance you must not harm me. If you do, then our relationship as brothers are over." Isago's hair fell over his eyes as he brushed it back, getting a clear look at the boy's small face.
"Harm?" Tsuna tilted his head curiously at the word, repeating to make sure he pronounced it correctly. "What's that?"
"It means that I will be gone from your life forever, Tsuna," Isago's voice deepen with glee at the horror that flashed through the boy's face. Tsuna's hands instantly clutched the sides of his shorts, shaking his head furiously.
"I will never harm you! I will never! Never!"
"Good," Isago walked closer to his dear brother, jerking his thumb under Tsuna's teary eyes. The young boy looked fragile and broken at Isago's words, almost as if he couldn't imagine living without Isago.
"Because I love you so much that it may serve as a double-edged sword to both of us," Isago gave little Tsuna a small peck on his cheeks, smirking at Tsuna's pouting face as his fingers clutched the edges of Isago's sweater.
"I wove you too," Tsuna buried his face into his brother's sweater, murmuring the phrase until the front door was pushed open and mama's clear voice rang through the house, calling the two boys down.
It was true, Tsuna was a precious little brother to Isago, even if Tsuna was legally the older one. But that didn't matter in front of power. If Tsuna stood in the way of succession, then Isago would cut off Tsuna's arms and legs to prevent Tsuna from overtaking the throne. That was how cold-hearted Isago was.
But then again, was Isago able to do it?
That's why Isago would give Tsuna the choice. He would not harm Tsuna until his own brother decided that Isago was a threat to the family and his life. He would let Tsuna break their relationship, and make him wallow in despair. As long as Tsuna loved him, Isago would let him go. But if Tsuna disobeyed, then everything will be over.
"Come on, brother," Isago gestured towards the door, stepping forward with Tsuna holding him. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Iemitsu was grinning at both boys, arms extended.
"Weirdo Isago! TsunaTsuna! Papa is back home!"
The two boys huddled over to their papa, Tsuna waddling towards him while Isago was pulled into a large embrace, dad's hand ruffling in his hair as Isago grinned at the man. The smell of sweat and tobacco filled Isago's nostrils, instantly making him suppress a sour face at his own father. Mama giggled at the family reunion while Isago's eyes trailed to her, gesturing for a group hug.
"Oh, dear!" Mama threw herself into the group hug and Iemitsu kissed her sloppily on the cheeks, rubbing her face with fondness. It was then Tsuna noticed a stranger behind dad, smiling sweetly at the family after Tsuna opened his mouth with quivering fear.
"Oh, Tsuna! Don't worry, this is Timoteo-" Dad looked over at the grandfather figure, releasing all of us as he gestured politely at the man. "-My boss."
"Welcome!" Nana grinned, lowering her body into a 90-degree bow. "Thank you for taking care of my husband all this time!"
Isago glanced towards his mom, then followed, repeating the same words of thanks. Tsuna only stood there, confused and not knowing what to do and hid behind his mother, clutching her apron.
"Tsuna!" Mom bickered with a sigh but smiled soon afterwards. She patted me on the head as a 'good job' before apologizing for her son's imprudence.
"That isn't a problem," Timoteo said, softening his eyes at us before crouching down to our eye level. "I have to thank you for having such a wonderful father that I can trust."
'Of course, you're literally naming his son as successor,' Isago thought bitterly before pulling Tsuna out from behind mom. 'So who is it going to be? Tsuna, or me?'
Vongola ninth had to choose between the two of them because they were the only ones that would be left in the Vongola bloodline. If what Isago remembered was correct, there was more than one successor to the Vongola line, but they all died, which left Tsuna being the only one that could inherit the family.
Tsuna's hand started to quake before Isago squeezed it reassuringly, giving him a small nudge. Tsuna was still hesitating so Isago started first.
"I'm Isago, this is Tsuna, my older brother!" He deliberately said, lowering his head as Tsuna, this time, followed his younger brother's lead.
"Oh, he's the older one, huh?" Timoteo turned his gentle gaze towards the older brother and nodded. Isago pleaded that they were going to leave the throne of successor to the worthy, not the older. Isago was going to prove himself worthy, prove himself, to be a better leader than his brother.
Tsuna was not suited as a leader, maybe in the long run of taking care of his family members, yes, but Isago was more of a leader in the expanding and influential way.
'Give the role of successor to me, and I will hold Vongola to its glory. I will make Vongola the strongest in history, and it will flourish more than the past ten generations combined.'
Isago wanted the Vongola position. He wanted it desperately.
As if Timoteo could hear Isago's thoughts, the grandfather's eyes turned to the younger sibling, staring at him hard. Isago didn't move his eyes, only stared back and tried to convey the message through his gaze.
'Give it to me, I want it. I need it.'
Timoteo's gaze deepened, opening his mouth to say something as conflict passed through his face, then clamped his mouth shut. Iemitsu, sensing that something was sort of amidst, invited his boss into the house, telling the group that he was famished. Nana gasped, pardoning her forgetfulness before guiding the guest to the table.
Isago let go of the breath he held inside, looking towards Tsuna who was staring at the grandfather.

chemistry - haon
request:  you're literally so cute omg 🥺, and yes he really is talented, one of the best rappers in my opinion actually, could it be a fluff, you being an idol and something like you two are dating and go to a variety show together and everyone just adores you two 🥺
words: 4,2k
genre: fluff
early a/n: omg im so nervous about this, my first request!! i kind of got carried away with the idea and just wanted to write a lot of things for it. it’s also my first time writing an idol and variety show au so i hope i did it justice <3
Tumblr media
“Today, we have a special, new couple with us, everyone please welcome them!” The short and chubby woman said, a little nametag hanging off the rough material of her shirt, Jiyoon. Her voice rose slightly at the last word, arms extending and hands pointing towards the two youthful souls that stood not so far away. Slowly, the camera zoomed out and focused on the excited and cheerful appearance of a young couple.
Today, after exactly two weeks of going public about your relationship with Haon, you were guesting on your first “couple” variety show. Needless to say, nervousness taking a toll on your mind, although it wasn’t the first time guesting on this exact show. Being a popular solo artist, you’ve been invited a few times, and so has the rapper beside you, but being here as a couple was a completely different story.
Still, you didn’t let the tension win, and decided to film today’s episode as per usual – with a lot of fun and laughs. Now that your boyfriend was there, the atmosphere was only going to be better. Haon had a huge smile on his face, one that was well matching with yours. His cheeks came up high and made his eyes turn into thin slits. Just seeing him so happy was enough to make anyone’s day perfect.
The two of you walked hand in hand, bodies moving to the slowly increasing volume of a song playing. It took a long second to realize that it was your recent collaboration – a song that earned a lot of praise and became a hit overnight. Letting the beat glide, your idol persona took over and you started bopping and mouthing the words of the song.
When in the center of the room, Haon turned around and rapped along, hyping up the whole set. His lyrics flowed perfectly, breathing perfectly in control for the speed he delivered the words. Although so close to the boy, you still envied him, there was still so, so much to learn from such an experienced person. Slowly but surely, he built up the atmosphere for the main part of the collaboration – which were your own lyrics. When they finally started, the set went silent.
Still in the chic persona that the fans adored so much, you rapped along, holding an imaginary mic. At some point, you’d lift up your leg and step on Haon’s thigh, the boy now crouching down and enjoying the show. He looked at you with a cheeky smirk, but the eyes held so much indescribable adoration for the female before him.
Distancing away, and deciding to walk around the room, you showed off the powerful aura that was one of the main reasons you were an instant hit right after debut. The producers and cameramen bopped their heads along. In the last few lines, your boyfriend joined in on the vocal parts and you ran towards him to perform together, satisfied with the smooth execution of the beautiful collaboration.
The song ended with a strong growl and an imaginary mic drop from the both of you. Sounds of amazement resonated through the room, and the MCs appeared in the shot once again, also clapping along.
“Exactly what do we say about this duo? Legendary, exceptional, talented couple” Jiyoon chirped, her voice high but slightly raspy. “Haon and _____ everybody!” Hoseok and Lim, two of the other MCs joined in, chanting names and motioning towards you for the main camera to move and switch focus.
A brief filming cut was made, and suddenly there were a lot of people running around. Some staff came close to check up on makeup, hair, clothes, while the rest prepared the set behind. Haon’s disappearance went by unnoticed, until he came back, holding a fluffy blanket in your favorite color. Unable to control the sudden rush of feelings, you hugged him tight, hearing quiet coos from the production crew.
Everything was finished in a matter of one minute, and the filming resumed. You were seated now, with the blanket covering up your legs, a warm feeling spreading over the chilly skin. There was a wide smile on your face that only widened as the male beside reached out and held your hand, placing it neatly in his lap.
“First off, welcome! It’s a pleasure seeing some familiar faces again” Lim spoke, deep voice contrasting his soft features. He looked at the boy on your left, then you, a friendly smile on his lips. The man’s cheeks were high and full, making it clear as to why the media often compared him to a mochi. Seeing Lim hosting again allowed you to relax more. You were already comfortable enough to joke and fool around with the older.
“Thank you for inviting us!” Haon replied, glancing to his right quickly as if to catch your reaction. Even after so long, there was that soft smile he fell in love with so long ago.
“It’s always refreshing when couples guest on our show, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised with today’s lineup” Lim continued, and was met with approving hums from the others. You looked down at the blanket, feeling a slight flush overtaking your features.
“We hope you guys will have fun with today’s segments we prepared just for you” The host continued, flipping over a page on his script and taking a quick glance at it. The announcement had your eyes widening and mouth forming an O shape. Haon was in charge of vocal reactions, an amazed (or perhaps thrilled?) sound leaving his parted lips. You looked at him in excitement, resuming to clapping and legs swaying back and forth.
“Ah, just for us? Stop it, I’m gonna blush” Haon suddenly said, putting a hand to his heart, trying to fake fluster. The tone with which he spoke was high in pitch, almost way too cute for his usual demeanor. You laughed at his little remark, seeing just how comfortable the other was with the older man.
“You know you’re my favorite, how can I not?” Lim replied with the same type of undertone, mimicking the actions of your boyfriend. A slight commotion developed between two friends. You, and the two other hosts, sat on the side, watching with attentive eyes the teasing conversation that went back and forth – providing yet another source of entertainment. The room was quickly filled with laughter and claps of excitement.
Once the noise died out, Hoseok was the one to speak. He was the newest MC of the show, yet he always seemed so professional.
“As you can see, we always have fun with our guests” He said, taking a glance at the script in his lap. The motion was brief and quick, almost unnoticeable. “And I hope you’ll continue to enjoy the show because we are jumping straight onto the first segment!”
The MCs did their usual transition between introductions and first segments, their strong cheers followed by your own. Adding to points for style, the couple made little hand guns that were pointed at the camera. They were later on edited to shoot colorful hearts.
“So, guys, you’ve been dating for some time now” Jiyoon noted, looking at you with adoring eyes. The woman was in her mid 40s and always loved seeing such young but aspiring people happy together. It was something about these pupils that had so much weight on their shoulders, but found time for each other, that made Jiyoon’s chest feel warm. It’s probably exactly why she loved doing shows like these.
“9 months” You interrupted, trying to hide the excitement that threatened to drip off those words. Honestly, it wasn’t possible to remain emotionless while speaking about your relationship. The boy meant so much to you, that whenever talking or thinking about him, you’d smile.
“9 months, yet only decided to go public recently, how did that go? How did you come about making such an important decision?”
“Well, we talked about it a lot ever since we got together actually” Haon spoke, the dark strands of hair falling over his eyes, failing to hide the raw emotion in his pupils as he spoke. Out of nowhere, the boy’s hand reached for yours and for the nth time that day, you let him hold it.
“But I think that just after our collab came out, the fans managed to catch onto that little bit of emotion. That’s when we realized it couldn’t be hidden for much longer. So, as we appeared in more videos together, they kept on picking on all these little looks because you know, it’s impossible to hold all of them in-” The boy laughed, cocking his head to the side. “And then maybe I slipped and posted a certain story...”
“Slipped and went through the effort of putting a filter and timestamp on the picture” You noted, remembering just the exact moment when it all unfolded. It was a late Friday. In quest of breathing some fresh air, you walked out on the balcony, leaned against the balustrade and enjoyed the beautiful view. The full moon greeted you happily. Haon joined you on the balcony shortly after, but his steps were quiet, unalarming of his presence. From his point of view, your form was only a dark silhouette, contrasting the city lights and white city behind it. Without much thought, the boy snapped a picture, turning to instagram story and writing ‘late night inspiration’.
The fans weren’t slow to catch up. Fortunately, it appeared to be a good decision.
“We were with supportive comments even before going official, and when that accident happened, we decided to come clean of it. That’s what he’s trying to present an essay about” You answered the question with a sassy tone, rolling your eyes playfully at the other, earning a laugh from the hosts in return. Your boyfriend tried faking offense at being so nonchalantly interrupted, but the smirk that followed on his expression didn't wait to appear.
“And how did all of this happen? How did the relationship develop?” Lim questioned, raising his eyebrows in a teasing manner.
“Haon was actually there when I auditioned for the company. He wasn’t allowed in by the judges-” You began, trying to vividly recall the exact moment of your first encounter. Haon was shorter back then, hair curly and covering most of his forehead, reaching his eyes even. It was a wonder he was even able to see you audition through those strands and blurry glass. Haon wore baggy clothes, and you remember thinking that his outfit of the day was inspired by homeless fashion.
“Mind you, I was called, but I refused”
“He refused and then stood right outside, watching the audition. When I came out of the room, he greeted me and we talked while I waited for my friend to finish her audition. We became friends in a span of 10 minutes”
“I knew she was going to get accepted, and when that finally happened, I was there to help her with all the burdens of the trainee period. Especially because she was trained to be a solo artist. We’re similar age, so I was there to be a friend as well as some kind of a tutor. Then, it all slowly developed from that friendship” Your boyfriend spoke with so much pride in his voice and you had to physically restrain from cooing out loud. Despite all effort, there was still a faint tint of red on your cheeks.
“The two of you are people of great qualities, what are some things that you exceptionally like about each other?” Hoseok questioned, quite interested in the whole topic. He wanted the two of you to talk your hearts out, to show just how happy people could be when together. The man was an idol too and completely aware of how cruel the industry could be, especially towards young artists that tried living life outside of work. Seeing a couple like you, openly talking about the relationship, gave him some faith to believe in.
“She’s extremely selfless. She’ll first make sure everyone is doing fine and everyone’s needs are met before hers. Also, she’s very determined. If this girl has her mind on something, she’s not going to stop working until it’s achieved. If some things meet bumps along the way, she tends to talk herself through it-”
“I do not!” You tried defending pride, but the words held no truth. It was a trait you were aware but definitely not proud of.
“You do. Personally, I find it cute, especially when you’re working on songs, composing or writing. You hum a melody and then explain it to yourself. Or when your tongue pokes out while concentrated, like this” Haon explained, carefully moving his tongue to place it between his soft lips, resembling a puppy. Although called out, you found the situation to be a great source of even more entertainment. Deciding to tease the boy further, you squinted and leaned in.
“No I don’t?”
“Yes, you do, exactly like this” Your boyfriend repeated the action, turning around so you could observe from different angles. Unfortunately for him, there was no affirmative reaction, and you only resumed staring at him. At this point, the MCs caught onto the game and started giggling silently, hands covering their mouth and trying to prevent the sounds from escaping.
“How? Can you please demonstrate again I didn’t see it” Just then, the façade broke and your voice pitched up at the end. A sneaky laugh slipped just in between the last two words. The boy looked at you seriously, taking a second to process the situation before gasping. His head shook in disapproval while everyone around laughed loudly. Your shoulders shook with so much power that they managed to throw you off balance and off the chair – almost. Almost, because just like always, the protective and reassuring side of your boyfriend was there to steady your form. With an appreciative look, you silently thanked him. Just a few more moments passed before you were answering to Hoseok’s question too.
“Haon... he’s very outgoing, to the point where I have to mentally prepare for whatever might happen tomorrow. He’s always doing something, always busy with something. Also, he loves to gift and surprise people, with small pieces of affection or big extravagant plans”
“Haon likes to interrupt me mid writing to listen to his songs and I really can’t complain about that because I get to hear all of the songs in their raw, original format” You tried to do the boy justice, although it is extremely hard to do so using plain, simple words. Your feelings went further than any sentence could ever portray.
“He’s very clingy and loves to show affection at any moment possible” To prove the point, you pointed towards the other hand that was securely in his. The hosts cooed at the sight, and instead of pulling back, Haon only caressed your fingers carefully.
“He likes to switch between English and Korean a lot, thank god that I understand him, for we’d definitely not be able to communicate properly if I didn't”
Truthfully, it was possible to go on for days about your boyfriend. It was that huge space the boy had in your heart that held so, so many reasons for why it loved him. Deeming that the show wasn’t an appropriate place for your heart to write love letters, you decided to stop there, ending the presentation with a slight nod and look at the ground. The hosts took a few seconds to drink up this beautiful confession, before agreeing on moving on to the next segment.
“For every couple, communication and understanding are very important, right?” Jiyoon started, looking around as if to gauge reaction. Humming and nodding along, you agreed with her statement. She flipped the pages of the script, a little more obvious than Hoseok, and continued the speech. “Those who are close can understand each other without words, even, so that’s exactly what our first game is going to be about”
As if on que, Lim ran towards the production crew to pick up a a stack of papers. All of them had something written on them, but thanks to his broad form, the words were hidden from sight. Hoseok took it upon himself to explain the game, saying you’ll be explaining words to each other using only your body. In the first round, Haon will be the one describing, while you guess, and in the second, vice versa. Six points and above were considered a win, there were two passes and one minute per round.
“I don’t think this is a good idea, we have a collective sum of three braincells” Your boyfriend spoke, realizing that such a game maybe wasn’t one of his strongest fields. Laughing quietly while walking towards your position, you listened to the funny exchange between him and Jiyoon.
“Three work better than none” The woman tried encouraging the boy, patting him softly on the back.
“The problem is all three of them are hers” Haon replied, a teasing tone noticeable in his words. The older giggled, pushing him softly towards his own position, shaking her head while doing so. Lim stood a few steps behind you, holding the papers high above his head so the boy describing could easily see the words. The countdown began and in a matter of three seconds, you were thrown into the game.
A minute passed by way too quick for your liking. It was as if you’ve only had enough time to properly think about two of the terms the other was mimicking, when in fact you’ve managed to do quite well. Succeeding on guessing explosion, roller coaster and cute, with a pass on police officer, you thought you’ve done well enough. For the first round, you were very proud of the both of you. Now the team only needed to get three more right, to win the game.
Unfortunately, this word set appeared to be a lot harder than the last. Still, somehow, with incredulous amounts of effort and teamwork, you’ve managed to succeed on cloud, phoenix and leaf with a pass on machine. Hearing someone yell “PASS” sent both youngsters into overdrive.
Cheers of celebration echoed throughout the wide space, as you all but yeeted yourself across the room. Succeeding appeared to be a huge accomplishment, even though it was just a simple game. You ran across the studio, occasionally throwing glances at the rest. Haon was wiggling his body like a spaghetti, making weird noises to emphasize his happiness. Once in arms reach, he lifted you off the ground and spun around. As a succession gift, the pair was gifted a Korean beef set, that managed to increase their already huge amount of happiness.
The next segment was calmer than the last. The MCs discussed a little bit more of your life and daily routines, still curious about how you were managing everything. They brought up some funny pictures and videos you’ve posted together in the past two weeks, and listened to the stories behind them – especially the video where you were running away from a flock of angry ducks at a local park, all while Haon was sneakily laughing and recording. Or the one where he was trying to make a certain type of pastry and managed to completely drown himself in flour. Of course, the picture you snapped then was immediately posted on Instagram.
When the hosts introduced the next game, your interest was immediately earned. Although alone, it actually was something you’ve practiced before, therefore doing it with your boyfriend shouldn’t be that challenging.
The explanation was brief and clear. You will be shown a yoga pose for exactly half a second and will then have twenty to recreate it as accurately as possible. Two executed poses are a success.
Apparently, this was supposed to showcase another side of your teamwork and compatibility. Just how the hosts imagined the game to prove your compatibility was beyond the couple, but as long as you had fun, nothing else mattered.
Feeling a rush of confidence from the last game, you stood up and approached the little screen that will be displaying the poses. Haon joined in and you were shown the first picture not long after. A gasp left your lips.
“Tell me I didn’t see that well” You whispered, surprise evident both in your voice but also eyes. Seeing your confused face, the boy was ready to explain, but upon noticing the clock already ticking down your precious twenty seconds, he realized there was no time for it.
“Unfortunately, you did, now hurry!” He said, already moving to mirror the pose of the man on that picture. It was easy for him to hurry, when his part of the pose was way easier. Carefully approaching him, you stood on his foot with yours, then looked back.
“I swear if you drop me-”
“Wouldn’t be the first time now, would it?”
“Just please don’t drop me this time” You pleaded, letting Haon grab the other leg by the ankle and slowly lift it up. Thanks to the idol training, you were quite flexible so the boy easily lifted your leg in the wanted position. Crossing yourself, you dared to push forward, screaming when the force on the ankle pulled you into a secure position and prevented the fall from happening. At that moment, your heart beat faster than ever. Extending arms forward, the pose was finished and you listened to the last few seconds tick away.
The second one seemed to not have put you in a wishful position either, but it was easier than the last one. You took the black shoes off while Haon executed the downwards dog, strengthening his back so you could easily climb up. Shifting all weight on strong arms and stepping backwards (and carefully) on Haon’s back, you stopped only when you reached his hips and were folded into a 90-degree angle. Once again, the clock ticked away, the MCs screaming ‘PASS’ and coming over to assist you coming down.
It was only easy yoga, yet the both of you gasped hard for air afterwards. A weak fist of celebration was risen into thin air, as you sat down cross legged, still somewhat dizzy and disoriented. The camera made sure to zoom in everyone’s face, from different angles, eager to catch raw reactions. Haon on the other hand, although out of breath, was able to talk and stand up. He decided to go grab water for you, commenting on the experience while walking.
“I don’t know how it showed our compatibility, but it for sure proved how out of shape we are if we managed to get out of breath like this”
You were given two minutes to calm down and have makeup checked (for the nth time that day), before the shoot continued. For the next, and at the same time last segment, you were seated again, speaking with the MCs about different goals and future plans. They allowed you to be as cliché and cute as possible, listening to the long bucket list of things you wanted to do together. Lim took a teasing approach and asked if you had any plans about the future wedding, to which your face flushed and turned a bright red shade. You were still pretty young, and there were a lot of things both had to experience and achieve before settling down; but it would be a lie to say that such thoughts haven’t crossed your mind. Haon decided to play along and replied with a laugh, saying that once it happens, all three of them will be invited.
The show wrapped up in a beautiful atmosphere. You were asked to perform another one of your collaborations, which was a slower, ballad song. Your hands stayed intertwined throughout the whole performance, only letting go at the last few lines. Then, you raised one arm up, meeting Haon’s just above your head, succeeding at forming a lovely heart.
The director yelled ‘CUT’ and the filming finished. Politely bowing to every one of the show’s staff, you walked away from the set, proudly holding the big set of Korean beef.
Tumblr media
The next week, when the episode officially aired, you were nervous checking the reviews, still unsure how such a wide audience would react to it. Thankfully, as the two of you sat comfortably on the bed, in each other’s embrace, scrolling down the comment section, you couldn’t find a single negative remark. There were two million views already, and ten thousand comments, all of them filled with praise, delight and support.
“They’re nations new couple!”
“Look just how cute they are!”
“Their interactions are so precious; their chemistry is so strong!”
“Haonnie, we know you’re going to take good care of our angel!”
“They’re so close... I wish I had someone as precious as she does T.T”
And maybe, just maybe, that was all you had to see to finally experience full happiness with the boy your heart loved more than anything ever.
Tumblr media
A/N: Here it is! My first request! Thank you so much for requesting and giving me a chance to write such a scenario <3 Also thank you for introducing me to Haon, i’ll keep up with him from now on  <3 Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Hi! I want to have comprehensive list of the BL manga/manhwa etc. that I’ve read because I want to spread the love for this genre 💜.  This post is a list of works that I’ve read which is not in this page yet + my comments on each work. I hope some people will find something that they like here ^__^
🐣 All BL recs from me
manhwa  🐓
💜 Never Understand
Yuri, one of the school's most handsome guys, and Jaerim, one of the school's ugliest, collide!...or don't they? Can't understand what's going on between these two! It's Out of Control!
shounen-ai, completed, 87 chapters
Tumblr media
THE STORY IS SOOOO GOOD. The art also improved by a lot upon reaching the later chapters. Jae-rim is dubbed as “ugly” (he’s a whole cutie tho) and I’m glad to see a non conventional character design for an MC! I highly recommend reading this!!  👌💯
Incorrigible
A sequel to “Never Understand” which is focused on Cho Ayeon’s story after being free from Soyeon’s control.
yaoi, completed, 8 chapters
Tumblr media
This has few chapters so maybe that explains the fast pacing. Nonetheless, it was a nice read, I have a really soft spot for Jae-rim so seeing his r-18 experiences with Yuri really got me ahkdjashdkajshd ;W;
💜 Dirty Vibrations
Best friends Yeong and Nohae thought it was a joke when they downloaded the infamous “cursed” app. It’s said to command the user to perform…sexual acts and punishes those who disobey or delete it. It started with making them kiss. When they disobeyed its order…the punishment was anything but a joke.
yaoi, ongoing
Tumblr media
This one is from Fujoking (author of Youjin)! In all honesty, I love this for its sex scenes. They are so well made, the art, the dialogue, the expressions, and just *chef’s kiss* 👌. When it comes to expressing sexual scenes in BL, my top authors would have to be Fujoking for manhwa and Zaria for manga.
💜 Paid
Executive director Heejae is nicknamed "Chaebol Prince" by the public. But his life is turned upside down when documents linking him to an embezzlement scheme are unexpectedly found by an accounting collegian Taekyung! So he pretends to have a crush on him, but.. Taekyung wants more than just flirting!
yaoi, ongoing
Tumblr media
This is another one from Fujoking! This has a heavier plot as compared to Dirty Vibrations, so you get amazing smut AND an engaging story!
💜 On or Off
Yiyoung is building a startup with his college friends. They get a chance to present their proposal to SJ Corporation, one of the leading companies in the country. But in the meeting room he sees Kang Daehyung, the extremely handsome company big shot that's so very much his type, and Yiyoung's heart starts to race...! Can pretty-faced Yiyoung win both in love and his career?
yaoi, ongoing
Tumblr media
Okay this! It’s really funny and the pacing is nice and the characters are nice and the art is nice and the perfect mix of romance comedy and slice of life i just HUHDADKAJDHJK it’s rly a feel good read and both MCs are SO ATTRACTIVE.
Penthouse XXX
Siyeon, a contract killer, has declared a boycott on men after being screwed over by his ex. That is, until he moves into a penthouse owned by Taekyung, a rich heir with killer looks.
yaoi, completed, 49 chapters
Tumblr media
It has meme worthy illustrations xD. The graphics are nice but I found Taekyung (one of the MCs) to be a little toxic. Also, some parts of the story were not wrapped up/discussed enough imo. But overall, it was a pleasant read.
Home Sweet Home
The last thing Jungyeon expected was for his mom to ask if she could remarry. The new man was kind, considerate, a perfect match for his mother but there’s a catch: he has a younger son. Sunwoo is an introvert. He’s shy and has trouble opening up to others, until he meets Jungyeon and finds himself opening up for the first time. As their parents get closer to marrying, they become close, too close, and that’s when Sunwoo learns Jungyeon is already seeing another man.
yaoi, completed, 57 chapters
Tumblr media
I honestly don’t know why this has quite a low rating on mangago because I found it to be a good read! It’s like sitting through a romance-drama movie. I liked the ending and the relationship between the main couple.
K’s Secret
Employee Kim Doyoon has been working for 5 years. He has one secret that he can't tell anyone else - the fact that he's a half-vampire born between a human and a vampire.

The art is so good in the recent chapters ugh. Also the sex scenes are well made. The plot is a little unclear though, and I feel like the relationship of the two MCs are kinda forced and unnatural hahaskdhakjdh. Still reading it tho since it’s ongoing.

Sports manga/anime always had a little (or lots) of gay, well this one made it officially gay! A cute rom-com bUT I feel like the ending was rushed. I would have loved it if there was more, but nonetheless, a good read! :)

It’s by Harada (author of ‘Yatamomo’ and ‘Color Recipe’) so expect dark themes. Trigger warning for rape. I suggest you skip the rape if you can’t handle it because this manga is so good. Its art and story (much like Harada’s other works) will really suck you in. This left a deep impression on me because the characters felt so alive. I respect Harada so much for that ability.
💜 Eigyou Nika!
Sakisaka, stationed in the second Sales Division, has an unrequited love for Toujou, his directing senpai. He had no intention of confessing his feelings. This is like watching a really good mature drama. The characters feel real and the situations presented in the manga were also something one can easily imagine themselves being put into. A short and good read.

In exchange for Azumaya's silence, Azumaya states, "Please let me hold you"'?! "Embrace me, who was the Most Huggable No.1? What the heck is he saying!"

I remember dropping this because MC was obviously raped, but upon watching the first episode of the anime adaptation, they made the sex consensual (thank God) and the story is not so bad after all. I suggest skipping the first chapter altogether and just start off at episode 1 in the anime, then you can pick it up in the manga to see the explicit scenes xD
That’s it for now! Will continue updating in this tumblr acc. as I continue on reading more BL ehe. Hmu on my twt if u wanna talk about BL and/or anime and manga in general hehe. Love lots~ 💜🐓

It's so eye catching!
The bold color scheme immediately creates a strong identity for the comic
The contrast between the two MCs is
I'll comment more when I've read past literally just the first page lol
eli [a winged tale]
Wow I love the art! Very beautiful palette and interesting characters right off the bat (pun intended!). Great dynamics between our two mains and love the magic so far!
mcapriglione (Falconhyrste)
yall I heard you were talking about hover girls and I came running
I just caught up like yesterday because I'm sick so I've spent the whole day reading comics, also I picked up a physical copy from geneva at c2e2 and that's what got me started on the series!
What stands out to me so much is the characters, jalissa and kim are total opposites, and it's really interesting to see them interact with each other. also the little things in the background that tell more about the characters, like jalissa's love for soap operas and kim's references ahaha
RebelVampire
So time for me to jump into the chat. What I like about the beginning is that it starts you off with this sort of beautiful artwork and magical feel, only to drop the mundane on you with the coffee shop and the obsession with ranking on social media. Something about how this starts really gives me this sort of more modern day magical girl feel that usually isn't quite there. Like it's a bit gritty feeling cause life is gritty, and I like that. As for favorite moment in the comic so far, I'm partial to when the girls discovered their powers. I like how it just sort of happened, and the different reactions they had to it. It was both magical and funny. Also for the reasons below. My favorite character is Jalissa, no content. Jalissa is basically my spirit animal. Doesn't want fame, just wants to catch up on the soaps, but somehow winds up with more energetic people. All of Jalissa's reactions to everything are great and I love it. For characters interacting, really it has to go to Jalissa and Kim. They're such polar opposites I think you'd have to try to NOT enjoy it. But either way, that opposites thing really just makes their interactions endearing and interesting since going in you know they'll disagree and yet somehow wind up doing the same thing together anyway. So I really enjoy that about their relationship.
As for the art, I really just love the color design combined with the style. It has a very whimsical feel that works for the abundant blue schemes and I really just adore every bit of the atmosphere it creates. For themes, I like that the comic explores ego. Like that moment where Kim asked if she was getting too full of herself really hit home. And I like that the comic kind of explores that even if you know that you might get egotistical and all high and mighty, its not the easiest thing in the world to stop either. For the story's overall content, I'm just gonna point to what I liked about the beginning. I like that its a bit more mature, modernized magical girl story where the magical girls are adults. That's probably just bias in that I'm an adult so I relate more to adults.

DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 2
9. What do you think Jalissa’s backstory and relationship with her family is? How do you think Jalissa will continue to change as the story progresses, and what will Kim’s role be in it? Further, how will Kim change?
10. Why do you think Kim was suddenly possessed, and how dangerous are they? Can Kim be saved from it? Additionally, why was the person who possessed Kim surprised Jalissa also had powers?
11. Do you think Jalissa and Kim will succeed as magical girls and become popular? Why or why not? Additionally, how might this change the future plans each has decided upon for their career?
12. What do you think this comic teaches us about pursuing our dreams and responsibility? What has been your favorite moment in the comic so far that deals with these themes? Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!

Hello CTP! This is the creator of HoverGirls c: I want to thank you all for taking the time to read and discuss this comic! I bet you're all pros at what makes a good story, so it's really humbling to know that it's liked so far. I'll be happy to answer any q's about story, chars, etc. And it was super nice to finally meet you @mcapriglione (Falconhyrste) and hope you feel better!
mcapriglione (Falconhyrste)
Aaaaa hey welcome to the chat @gee !
Tantz Aerine (Without Moonlight)
Ok I just finished reading the entire comic start to finish. I have to say I'm not only impressed by the wonderful art and refreshing color scheme that makes me think of wild summer, but amazed that I find myself invested in this story! Usually it's not my cup of tea at all, but Hover Girls are going to clearly be the exception. I'm adding this to my comic bookmarks The first thing I have to give my kudos for is the sheer character design and characterization. I had sincere, and in Kim's case, almost visceral reactions to both girls, and the Korean guy (his name sounds Korean). While Jalissa intrigued me from the start, Kim got under my skin to the point I found her insufferable! It is only in the last few pages with her backstory flashback that I somewhat feel sympathy for her. I love the interaction between these two, and also how the story is paced so that we get to gradually become aware of more layers and nuance in the relationship they have. Jalissa's love and concern for Kim was clear to me from the start, while Kim's not so much. She (Kim) came across to me as immature, self-centered and inconsiderate. Later, when we see more of their history, I got to see the concern and love from Kim's side too. That's excellent writing to go with the excellent art. I also really like the premise with the alien creatures! I am intrigued and want to know more. Finally, I want to talk about the humour in the dialogue and the art in general. I love how there's a streak of black humour throughout the comic. My favourite character is (in case you didn't infer it yet) Jalissa, but I like the entire cast. They need each other to organically bounce off each other and develop. And lastly, I have to mention the really fun brand names and soap titles. Always makes me grin. Wonderful work @gee !(edited)
RebelVampire
I get the impression that Jalissa was a typical delinquent and that her parents werent around much - hence the delinquency. And so I imagine it's a bit strained at the best of it. I think Jalissa moving is her attempt to turn things around, and I think that is what will happen. Jalissa will become more responsible, take more of a sense of duty, etc. Which is what I think will happen with Kim, along with a healthy dose of gaining some humility. As for why Kim was suddenly possessed, maybe the weather? Regardless, 100% I'm sure Kim can be saved. Only bad villains monologue so Kim got taken over by a bad villain. As for why Jalissa's powers are a surprise, probably a lack of communication due to alien bureaucracy. Jalissa and Kim will definitely succeed as magical girls if you tone down expectations to be heroes who fight crime as opposed to what we see in every anime where they fight and just are completely fine and sparkly. As for becoming popular, maybe for a bit, but honestly, probably not. The internet is fickle so sure they might get a viral video....but then everyone will move on. I think it will mostly only change Jalissa's plans as she's finds there are more important things in the world than soaps. As for what the comic teaches about pursuing our dreams is that it's hard. My favorite moment is actually Kim checking if anyone liked the pic and it was just Jalissa. The world is saturated with talent, and even if you have the drive, the skills, etc., getting noticed is kind of a slog. But I think Kim shows us at least might as well keep trying.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I had the opposite reaction as @Tantz Aerine (Without Moonlight) ! Jalissa irritated me at first, while I liked Kim. But then, when I saw Jalissa's genuine kindness, I liked her more, and when Kim started showing her flaws- how she's kind of self-centered and naive, I started to like her less. That's not to say I think this comic has bad writing, though! I like how the author has given everyone such realistic flaws. I went through a lot of cycles of liking and disliking the characters, and I think that reflects how it feels as you get to know some people irl. These characters are complex!
Seeing stoic Jalissa get truly angry at Kim was powerful.
I like the detail of Jalissa keeping her bat in her backpack's water bottle holder
"Only bad villains monologue so Kim got taken over by a bad villain. "
Rebel, that made me laugh
I think it's true too(edited)

Tantz Aerine (Without Moonlight)
@Eightfish (Puppeteer) it's exactly that we get different and real reactions to these characters that is the proof of excellent writing. We react differently, but we react as if they were real people and that's an absolute win!
mathtans
Woo, my schedule's eased a bit and this looked interesting. For the discussion prompts...
1. The beginning set things up well in terms of a quickie fight and then the characters and city situation. There was humour in that too. Good tone.
2. Fave moment, as far as plot was probably Jalissa interacting with blonde boy (sorry, forget the name) in particular because it seemed to be foreshadowing. Fave moment for relatability was the phone message with "Get to the point" because I SO relate to that.
3. Tough call on character. Both mains have good qualities and I don't feel I know the others well enough yet. I suppose Jalissa for her straightforward nature and sticking to her guns (like about dresses).
4. I liked Jalissa and Blonde Boy interacting, funny enough, as I said earlier. The cousin banter is good but the former stood out somehow.
5. The art's a neat blend of emphasis in some places and less in others; also interesting how the hair is done. Not sure why that sticks out.
6. I'm very bad at noticing themes. It's neat showing what "magical girls" do in their off hours. Also the troubles with getting noticed.
7. Story's clever, and I felt suspicious of Blonde Boy from him being around during the powers acquisition, which seems to be paying off. Nice to see ladies of colour too.
mathtans
8. Comic's got a bit of everything. Magic, mystery, slice-of-life... a reader can probably gravitate to something.
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 3
13. What are you most looking forward to seeing in regards to the comic?
14. Any final words of encouragement for the comic? Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
mathtans
9. Jalissa seems to be someone who grew up in a difficult situation and needs to blow off steam sometimes. I'm reminded of the time she punched the wall - but then within a day went to get the materials needed to fix it. I feel like she had an unhappy home life with no real outlet or people to talk to about it. Maybe the fighting evil will help, or at least give her a sense of accomplishment. Kim needs to be a bit more grounded in reality, and I suspect will, although at the same time you kind of hate to see it happen, like the death of innocence or something.
10. I wondered if possession was always part of the plan against Kim (once it happened), and that's why the water beings were around, like they're trying to get access to the powers... though it's seeming like it was always something inside her, she was simply able to suppress the feeling for a time. Until she was at a low point emotionally.
Actually, I always thought BlondeBoy had something to do with the attacks, and in the scene between him and Jalissa (the earlier one in the alley) you saw hint of blue in the art, and one wonders whether he was acting normally. I wasn't sure if it was a subconscious thing or a conscious thing. Now I wonder if Kim wasn't manifesting the items herself on some subconscious level, wanting something to defeat. Though maybe he still had a hand in it too.
Of course, maybe the weather has something to do with it too, as Rebel remarked on.
mathtans
11. I feel like their power as magical girls is possibly tied to the presence (or at least strength) of the enemy, otherwise why wouldn't it make the news more? (Granted, could be obliviousness by the populace, but this seems to be reinforced by the current plot elements.) As such, their magical days seem numbered... unless they could fight against regular mundane foes? I dunno. The world doesn't seem to care much about supernatural either.
mathtans
Maybe they should change their name? Hovering doesn't sound too aggressive, and I don't think they do it that much anyway. Granted, DampGirls isn't catchy, and H2OGirls is a bit clinical. ^.^
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I love this comic! The two main characters play incredibly off each other, and there's lots of great comedic moments. My fav is Jalissa.
I wonder if it is the weather that's causing these possessions? Because, like, the flying fish attacks in general are tied to the rain. Maybe particularly rough rainstorms cause possessions? I feel like the thing that possessed Kim and the boy was what brought about the powers in the first place - the energy that came down from the sky on the beach. It's odd how the blonde dude didn't seem to use powers but got possessed first, while Kim uses her powers the most and got possessed second... maybe Jalissa has an easier time resisting because she has the strongest will?
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
@snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights) I don't think Jalissa can get possessed- Bob said that his soul was split in two, and Jalissa got the powers while Korean guy got the mind
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
ah yes, that's true
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
@mathtans I like "Hovergirls"! It's cute and catchy
gee
The title I still don't 100% like, TBH. I legitimately thought on it for a week before starting on this comic and still couldn't think of anything better XD
RebelVampire
What I'm most looking forward to in the comic is probably just more Jalissa in general and finding out why Jalissa is the way Jalissa is. Overall though, this is a beautiful comic with a great combination between modernization and magical girls with just the right hint of maturity that makes it more appealing for an adult. Definitely would recommend to adult fans of magical girl stories!
mathtans
To be clear, I had no issue with the title of the comic... with some comics there's only an offhand reference too. I guess I was more picturing the ladies arguing, were Jalissa to get more into it.
As to the rest of the questions, I think the comic can show that reality is somewhere between the two of them (though they do play off each other very well) as far as dreams and responsibility go. I'm vaguely curious to know whether the alien might be having a positive (or negative?) influence on BlondeBoy, who seemed a bit of a jerk from the lens of the others.
The world building is well done too, like I could even see spinoffs... these aliens apparently just sent a couple emissaries to Earth, maybe there's some sort of space force out there fighting too. Maybe they see Kim's videos and want to recruit her. Or hire her for public relations. idk.
Anyway, looks great, definitely an interesting read and nice showcasing of things you don't see other places, best with it!
gee
Huge thank you all CTP group for giving HoverGirls a read! I cannot thank you enough for giving your time and thoughts on this story and it’s been incredibly helpful and encouraging!!

Some Orange Jerk’s Hazbin thoughts, the longer version.
As I mentioned in a prior post, I  thought the pilot was so-so. Don't hate it with a capital H but find everyone's love for this show to be... odd. Though considering the late 2000s Devinart vibe I get from the show’s art style, probably not too odd now that I think about it. So here’s my longer, more rambly, thoughts on Hazbin Hotel by some rando Orange Jerk on Tumblr.  And as always, more power to ya if you do love it, obviously.
Art direction wise, I’m just not crazy about Viv’s color choice. The red and black and pinks give a Valintine’s day meets Wonderland Queen of Hearts vibe that just doesn't personally work for me on a visual level.
As for hell itself, I thought the background stuff like ‘Radio Hack’ and the main city being named Pentagram to be... eh? Like, that’s the kind of world-building we’re going with here? It felt less like Hell and more like a city with the trapings of Hell, at least for me.
So, main cast, the trio as it were. Eh. Meh. Like, Charlie is a Disney Princess of Hell... even though no one treats her as one respect wise which just strikes me as odd from a background perspective. And Charlie has that standard Disney nativity going on... even though she was born and raised in Hell? Like, why bother to make your most optimistic and native character a denizen of hell if she’s not going to look or act the part personality wise?
The reason the personality thing confuses me I guess,  is that take Charlie out of Hell and we’ve seen her character a thousand times before: The bubbly sweet optimistic girl that’s been done so many times before.  Is the ‘But in Hell!’ aspect really that much of a grabber for people? Guess it is and more power to em but it just strikes me as a strange creative choice where once again a character's personality doesn’t logically flow from their background.
Design-wise Charile is fine, red tux reminds me of the God from the 1977 Oh God movie so that gets a thumbs up in my book. Still a bit weird that a princess is wearing it but it makes sense with the Hotel set up and all so her outfit has a logic to it.
Then we have Vaggie. So, legit question here people: If you went into the pilot blind and Angle Dust didn’t make his ‘taco’ comment would you have ANY idea that Vaggie is supposed to be Latina? Because I legitimately had no idea that was what her design was supposed to say about her as a charchter. Also didn’t really get a moth vibe from her, either if I’m honest. As for her personality, she’s the standard ‘loving supportive’ GF but with an angry side protective side for Charile... and she’s a Latinia/Latinix.  Does... Does no one else think that’s just a bit... off? Making the one clearly marked Latinia character the ‘angry girlfriend’ archetype?
Also, that weird pink X eye patch bugged the hell out of me when I was watching. Totally petty as shit nitpick, but I had to vent on that bit. Honestly, though Vaggie is also Meh? Like, she’s in a relationship with Charlie, cool and all but she just doesn’t strike me as a terribly interesting character if I’m honest. Gives me a sort of Lisa Simpson ‘stick-in-the-mud’ vibe.
And then we have Angle Dust. You know, in the words of Netflix’s Big Mouth, “Sassy and Gay”  isnt a personality. Angle Dust basically has that sort of ‘2000s  Yaoi OC’ vibe and considering Vive once had a DA character sheet where she literally listed his personality is ‘Bitch’... Yeah.
Also, as I’ve said elsewhere, Viv and crew are doing too much with this guy. So he’s an ex mobster killed by his homophobic father in the 1920s (not mentioned in the pilot but it is a pilot in all fairness so you can’t throw all your cards on the table). And he’s a Spider Demon... even though per Word of Viv how everyone’s designed in hell doesn’t have anything to do with how they died on Earth (then why deign them that way?). And he’s a porn star (being ex Mob shouldn’t he be the one paying for porn stars as a power domination sort of thing?). AND he’s going for a Beetlejuice meets CJ from Regular Show sort of design.
It just seems a bit much, imo. Like, you could make him just a gay ex mob who mostly uses a Tommy Gun and design him to fit that and leave the Spider-Demon stuff out and it becomes a lot more manageable. Something like a simplified Zoot Suit, or the like. You could keep the sexual humor but throw it a bit more 1920s slang and pop culture references for characterization/comedy purposes (Vaggie, for example, has no idea what he’s talking about most of the time). Granted, I’d personally rather they ditch the ‘animal bits slapped on’ aspects of the designs as a whole but that, as always is just me.
For the record, I’m not ‘offended’ by Angle Dust as a character concept, I’m just not wowed or impressed, ultimately.
And then we have Alastor. Now, I LOVE Alastor as a character. He’s got that classic ‘reality warper’ vibe ala Bill Cipher or Discord but with a 1920s radio show host twist that I just think is amazing and the sound distortion they added to his voice was a really cool touch on top of it all. The problem, as always, comes more with the color choice. One one of your own characters can’t take someone seriously because they look like a ‘strawberry pimp’ that might be the time to maybe go with a different color pallet? Like, idk,  maybe throw in some warm browns and brass golds to involve the 1920s radio vibe stronger? Radios of the 20s and 30s weren’t famous for being red, is what I’m getting at.
The other problem with Alastor is that he’s too strong a personality, ironically. He comes in at the tail end of the pilot and basically steals whatever interest a potential audience member (or at least fat orange jerks like me) might have had in Charlie's plight. It's like introducing Bill Cipher in the first episode of Gravity Falls. At that point whatever interest you might have had in the MC goes out the window and you think ‘what’s this dudes deal and can the show be about them instead please?’ Sure, Alastor in all of his pesudo deer (Those don’t look like horns in my opinion but whatever you say Viv) is fun to watch but he drowns out Charile through sheer force of charisma and showmen ship. Maybe the series itself will fix this but for the pilot at least I think it’s an issue.
Also, Nifty is Nifty and she needs her own spin-off ASAP. That is all.
Husk is literally Avocato from Final Space with wings and some gambling bits thrown in design-wise. That’s literally all I think of Husk, sorry Husk fans :(
The animation is good, but I do find it ironic that as much as people like the bitch about  SU being off model, Hazbin I thought suffered from so many different animators tackling different scenes that it just felt jarring going from one scene to the next due to the difference in style and the shifts in animation pacing. Now, don’t get me wrong, a lot of it looks great but that switch in animators kinda just took me out of the experience in places.  Well, that and the lack of proper scene transitions. Those are what also made the pilot feel like whiplash for me.
And now comes to Bob’s thoughts on the plot of the pilot and this is where the logical holes of the series start to get to me just a bit.
So. Charlie wants to reform the demons of hell of their sins so they can get to heaven and Hell can lower its population and angles down come down and deliver some righteous furry smiting on their asses. Okay. Stupid question but what the hell is Charlie basing this off of? I mean, was AD really THAT good an actor that Charlie thought going full steam ahead on the Hotel idea was the next reasonable step up?
Like, the Hotel was clearly a mess and her staff is literally just her and Vaggie and MAYBe Angel Dust. Even if the episode had ended with a horde of demons lining up to get into heaven by way of cleaning up their acts there’s no way two, three people could handle that (Or, you know, six if we throw in Nifty and Husk in fairness now that I think about it).
And that’s ultimately the thing with the pilot, the demons are assholes as you’d expect the citizens of hell to be but if they are assholes... why should we care if they get redeemed or not when not one of them is clearly interested in the idea? As cheesy as it would have been, the pilot ending with a horde of demons wanting to give this ‘become better’ thing a shot would have at least left the pilot on a better note to end on. As it is it just seems like Charlie is doomed to fail because no one but her gives a shit or belives about her idea for the Hotel and we have no proof that her idea will even work. Which just makes me wonder: Why should I care if no one else does?
Ultimately, the show has potential but the art style and aspects of the writing just don’t click for me. The show doesn’t say ‘adult’ to me so much as it does 'Hot Topic Teen trying to be adult' which works for a lot of people but for me I think Hellevua Boss as more potential concept-wise. And has scenes on Earth which do the red and black and pink and white colors of the demons a lot better visual justice contrast wise but that’s just me.

Megalo Box is the true successor
I felt a bit lost in between anime seasons this year. Perhaps because 2018 was such an absolutely amazing year for anime as a whole. Anime that would’ve been ‘series of the year’ any other year were crowding around each other asking for attention, so much so that I had to cut shows out of my (very leisurely, usually 1 anime per season) viewing schedule. One of those shows was Megalo Box.
On the surface, Megalo Box didn’t interest me. I mean, it looks like Cowboy Bebop, its structured more like Hajime no Ippo (fitting, since it’s also about boxing). But the gimmick of the ‘gears’ were enough to get me to roll my eyes. “Yeah, dude,” I said to my strawman, “I’ve seen Ippo, I don’t need mecha involved in my boxing anime”. I dismissed it because as I mentioned in my ‘Why I don’t like mecha anime’ post/rant that no one has read, it always feels like the show just SAYS someone is the best, but you can’t actually see how they are the best. I’ll even take shonen magic or pseudo-science to explain, I just want something more human.
Tumblr media
It took me months of ignoring it, working through other shows, for someone to come and tell me what Megalo Box was about. I hadn’t seen anything but the graphics of Junk Dog with his scrappy pneumatic Gear and seen some basic synopsis based on the first few episodes, so their excited explanation was very confusing to me. Gearless Joe? Wait, you mean the series gimmick is the one the main character is actively competing against? So, I was intrigued. It took me until this week, without Goblin Slayer and with Jojo rumored to be on a clip show, to finally sit down and watch it.
I found it completely fascinating, knowing what was coming next in the series was Gear-less fights. I found myself appreciating other parts I would’ve been not paying attention to, and now it’s easily one of my favorites that I’m going to start recommending to everybody.
Tumblr media
First off: the look of this show. The color palette is seemingly deliberately washed out to look as though it was animated on cels and then recorded to VHS, the same way I watched Cowboy Bebop back in the day. The art style is also reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop in the world is very run down and lived in, with lots of crumbling infrastructure, piles of sand against the corners of buildings, junk and trash everywhere. This contrasts very well with the gleaming spot-lit interior of Megalobox Dome and the neon lights of the District. It seems to me that the animators tried not to include any noticeable CG or use techniques that would’ve have been available for old-school cel animation. Only the 16:9 aspect ratio and modern background music makes it obvious that this is a 2018 production. Character design also looks like something out of 1990′s Gundam, with lots of individual tufts of hair and striking color choice and shapes for clothing.
Tumblr media
Secondly: The characters and story are compelling in a way I wasn’t expecting. Ordinarily I dislike ‘main characters’ because they are deliberately bland and generic-looking so that the audience can self-insert as them. Our MC doesn’t even have a name until he chooses one for himself, Joe, after seeing a billboard ‘Not for your average joe’. He decides to be an exceptional Joe, despite having no real backstory or much of a personality other than never giving up, which is perhaps the base level trait required to be a main character. His body is covered in scars, and he has this habit of driving his motorcycle at top speed towards a cliff, playing chicken by himself, but other than what those things imply about him, that’s all you get. For once, I didn’t mind!
Tumblr media
Supporting characters of the street orphan Sachio and trainer-slash-professional-grifter Nanbu by contrast have amazingly deep and detailed backstories. Nanbu’s history with one of the opposing boxers, and the interactions he has with the Megalo Box commissioner, the gang boss, and others are often unexpected, always fascinating.
Tumblr media
Of course the animation craftsmanship in the actual matches themselves are excellent too. It almost felt like a shame to gif them, robbing them of half or more of the frames of animation, almost all of which are drawn on the twos or even on the ones at times. Whether you like the spectacle, or the ‘heart’ behind the story and out of ring relationships between the characters, you’ll enjoy Megalo Box. Of course if you like both, this’ll elevate things to a new level, much like I did

There are forty-two muscles in the human face and Yoongi must be using half at them to smile at you. It's not his usual crinkled nose and toothy grin, no. This one shines through mock seriousness and curls the corners of his lips in barely concealed amusement. Joy plumps his face like botox ‘till he looks positively cherubic.
Tonight, the two of you are having some banter, trading witty remarks like playing cards in this crowded bar, slapping down shot glasses like aces of spades with vigor. Your quips are wrapped in dry humor, which, coming from anyone else might rub him wrong, might feel grating like sandpaper, but with you, he quite likes the burn in the back of his throat, accompanied with the tickle of laughter he fights not to release.
You don't drink often, but when you do it's usually never out in public with a bunch of strangers, let alone in a place quite like this.
One wouldn't think this establishment would be directly below a cute little cafe shop that was usually packed by young school girls or the busy working class that swarmed the streets until sundown. The juxtaposition was very appealing, most likely the intended effect, after all.  The contrast between the two was impressive as hell, but anyone who'd seen their co-owners, Jin and Namjoon together, would find it terribly fitting.
Its hip hop styling added to the vibe, complementing 90’s American hip hop and r&b tracks playing from high definition speakers strategically placed around so no one could escape the heavy bass. The pallet here was striking colors, heavy on the black and red while upstair’s aesthetic depended on gentle pastels. Further in was a lounge area with black leather furniture over by the wall adorned with the greatest hip hop records of all times.
This wasn’t quite a club, though on a Friday like tonight it was packed like one.
You and your date had taken the last few available seats at the bar, right up with Jin who was serving drinks without seeming to get a break from the ever needy customers.
You wince at your latest sip of liquor, laughing at yourself for even thinking it’d be a good idea to get the same thing Yoongi had ordered. Figures he’d like the hard stuff. You push it out of sight, with no real thought behind your actions, obviously.
Yoongi’s been testing your knowledge of rap music now, laughing every time you bluffed your way through a song, rapping your knuckles on the bar in faux recognition. “I know this one!”
“Yeah? Whats the name?”
You shake your head and shrug your shoulders. “I don't remember the name, I remember the flow, man. The, like, feel.” You giggle. “Feel me?”
He nods, all mock understanding. “Yep, totally, —” but his gaze is sliding elsewhere, and the warmth in his face seems to drain away all at once.
There are forty-two muscles in the human face, and Yoongi uses all of them when he sees someone slip something into your drink.
It's an instant of change, corruption that spreads through the bloodstream, something that happens in a millisecond—rage.
The exact shift of his facial features is devastatingly beautiful, the type of thing you don't get to really appreciate in the moment. Your mind will selectively remember the cruelty in his eyes as his pupils dilate, as his brows furrow instead—the tightening of his jaw, the soft blush on his cheeks fading with any trace of that youthful amusement from before. His face contorts into something savage, beastly—faster than your eyes can follow. When Yoongi shoots past you to rip the man next to you out off his stool, you almost choke on a gasp.
"Woah, man! What are you doing?"
Your eyes widen—Yoongi's got him by the lapels, ivory fingers crushing camo print jacket in a tight grip. He doesn't seem to be in any rush to verbally answer the startled question thrown at him. Like he'd prefer his fist to do the talking. It's obvious that he's strung with tension, his body seemingly shaking with rage. The proposed violence sends dominos falling down one by one, every patron in the room catching onto the change in energy.
Everyone's frozen. A few murmurs buzz around you but you can't make out anything clear.
You slide out of your chair. "Yoongi," you try. You take a step forward.
A strong hand curls around your upper arm. The startled squeak you make is completely involuntary.
Yoongi's head snaps over to you. "Get your hand off of her, Namjoon.”
"I just don’t want her to get too close, okay?" He lets go nonetheless, but doesn't lessen the proximity between the two of you, like he's prepared to pull you out of danger at any moment.
You frown up at him. He’s doing that awkward thing with his face that should probably be a smile. This imitation doesn't look even remotely similar.
He takes a deep breath, close enough to you that you can hear it rattle in his chest. The movement makes his loose t-shirt rustle and a waft of cologne hits your nose. It aids in masking the adrenaline in your veins only a little bit. "He tried to put something in her drink." And it’s said so emptily, you wonder if you'd misheard. "W-what no! He's crazy! I swear I was just minding my own business—" Which is when Yoongi decks him right in the mouth. The kid slides to the floor in a sloppy heap. Yoongi's only at his level for a moment, down on his haunches. "Don't you fucking lie." He hefts him back up to his original place, back pressed against the bar with enough force to bruise.
The kid (and there’s no way you’d think of him as a man—he looks too fucking young) seems sick with fear, sweaty and nearly green. He doesn't say anything, only swallows thickly. His saliva must go down like cough syrup in his throat, fear leaving its mark nasty on the back of his tongue. His brown eyes, glossy with tears, dart back and forth for help. Or a quick getaway. He looks impossibly smaller in that moment, anxiety molding him into panicked prey, the initial indignation, instinctual defensiveness literally knocked out of him. Something ridiculous is decimating all common sense in your head. It feels like sympathy. "You ain't going anywhere." Jin springs into action. He comes from around the bar quickly. Yoongi pulls him forward, then shoves him again. The kid cries out. His voice cracks and to you that makes him seem even younger. To Yoongi that means he's only half as scared as he should be. "Fucking answer me, you coward. What the fuck were you planning to do, huh? You like drugging girls so they can't defend themselves? Is that it?" That makes your skin crawl.
"I know roofies are meant to be undetectable which is why I can't see or smell any trace of it, but..." Jin’s got your abandoned glass dangling between well groomed fingers. Yoongi is quick to cut in. "Maybe if I shove the entire thing down his throat we'll see the effect—" "Jungkookie,”Jin calls. “Did you see anything?"
"I fucking saw him do it!—" and it's scathing, but Jin doesn't flinch. He's as calm as ever. So is his patient gaze as he says "I believe you, Yoongi." Jungkook clears his throat. And you rip your eyes off of the kid’s face to check him out. Kook’s part of security here, you recall, which you always seem to forget, but with the way he’s standing at the main entrance, in all black with his back to the wall, he really seems to fit the bill today. He must’ve been scanning the room all night, you realize. Probable saw it all. "He was starin' at her the whole time, hyung. I saw him walk in right behind ____, thinking he was her friend or something. But then she didn't seem to pay him any mind so I figured they must've not known each other after all."
You hadn’t noticed anyone even walking behind you. Had he been following you all along, since you got off of work and started taking the ten minute walk over here?
Jin's gaze slides over to the stranger, considering.
"Check his clothes." Yoongi shoves his hand down the boy's pocket invasively, digging around roughly until he finds something. What he pulls out is a very small baggy of pills. There’s a sticker on it. Something green—a dragon is what it looks like. You suck in a deep breath. Namjoon mutters a curse.
Yoongi tosses them over his shoulder and Jin plucks them from the air. He clicks his tongue. “No doubt about it.” The tiny bag rustles as he swipes a thumb over the contents. He smacks the boy’s forehead with it, who flinches away. “Who gave you these?”
“J-just s-s-some guy,” he squeaks. Some portion of that sympathy you had before dies.
You can't call the triumphant curve of Yoongi’s lips a smile per se. Those type of things should reach the eyes, warm one's face into something bright, nudge skin into welcoming valleys and crevices. The juxtaposition of the look on Yoongi's face at this moment and earlier tonight is disturbing. In them, you see anticipation in its darkest shade. Barely contained violence stuffed in an empty gaze meets trembling pupils. You're glad it isn't you meeting that stare. You fight the urge to ruin the tension, to open your trap, to say something to that might possibly help the situation at hand. But the moment to intercede slips from your grasp. “Do you even know where you are right now? They didn’t tell you? Or were you dumb enough not to care?”
They're close enough that Yoongi really doesn't have to lean in any closer but he does anyways. Their proximity looks almost intimate and the illusion is teased even further when you spot his lips start to move close to the stranger's ear, whispering words not meant for anyone in this room but the young man. All you get from it is the cutting edge of consonants on pretty pink lips when he enunciates the ugliest words. It's not hard to guess what's said, the nature of the threat. Especially, when the blood drains from the smaller male’s face.
Especially when hot liquid seeps from his groin, staining his jeans an even darker color at the same time a shaky whine vibrates through his bloodless lips. Noise erupts. A disgusted groan probably made by the poor soul who'd have to clean up the mess later invites a few grossed out exclamations and laughter. A displeased tsk from Seokjin is almost buried under the morbidly amused chatter that blossoms around the room. "Jesus Christ," Namjoon spits. And you don't really think Yoongi realizes the kid has already fainted from terror when his grip completely slackens and the kid falls straight to the floor with a dull thump. You decide right then and there that you do not like the sound of heavy limbs obeying to gravity like that. It could be pure second hand embarrassment that keeps you from looking at him. It might be some cluster of disgust, pity, shame, guilt. All of them climb into your lung cavity like wild things, using the chamber of your rib cage as monkey bars to hang from. The extra weight is suffocating. You plant your gaze at the dart target on the far wall, nerves shot to hell, coincidentally meeting Jungkook's gaze. Even with thick arms folded across his chest imposingly, he somehow still manages to look winsome and cute. He's watching you with a curious glint in his eyes, seeing what you'll do next, obviously gauging your reaction. Namjoon steals your focus with a hand at the small of your back, steadying you. You roll your gaze up to meet his and he returns the contact, mouthing a question. Are you okay?
Which means you probably look as good as you feel.
And since there isn’t an answer to that question you’d like to admit, opting out of a response seems like the most appealing thing to do. Instead you choose to check back on the scene at hand, immediately regretting it when you do. Jin's crouched down, and from what it looks like, has poured the contents of your barely touched drink onto the assailant's face. The latter sputters awake, eyes comically wide while he looks up and past the older man’s head. Something inside of you chips away when a guttural sound, purely animalistic in its fear, vibrates from his chest upon seeing Yoongi's face.  Terror laces every word like a foreign accent. "Please don't hurt me, pleasepleaseplease,  I didn't know, I didn't know what they were for, I swear it I didn't. I swear to God—" "Quiet," Yoongi says disinterestedly.
"I just checked his ID. The little shit isn't even old enough to be served alcohol," says Jin. He tosses it over his shoulder to Namjoon who pulls it open with practiced ease and holds it down in front of you for you to see.
"Old enough to be held accountable for what he's done,” Namjoon adds.
"Tried to do.”
"The intent was there, hyung. This was just a failed attempt." “I know. That isn't what I'm saying.” Plastic crinkles as the little baggy of pills are crushed in Seokjin grasp. "Cops would be bad for business." Lee Minseok, seventeen years of age, curls into a fetal position. You watch on, morbidly fascinated at this public humiliation.
“Who said anything about police?” Yoongi says. You agree, but somehow you think for entirely different reasons.
Jin stands to his full height and lowers his voice to a near whisper. “We can't deal with things like we used to. This isn't some underground place, it's a legally owned building.” The words sound recycled.
“No one here would say anything if we just—”
“This town is different. These people don't go by our code, we can't assume—
“Close up early, then.”
“Yoongi—”
“Excuse me,” and you don't mean for your voice to crack like a wuss but it does. The three boys turn wide eyed to look at you as if they'd forgotten you were there. Two employees wearing shirts with Monster’s Delights logos on their left breast approach and begin to heft Lee Minseok off the floor. They don't go anywhere though, like they’re waiting for more instructions.
One speaks up. “What do we do with him?”
You clear your throat, and cock a hip, the safety of bravado pulled from your arsenal of defense mechanisms. “Shouldn’t I get a say in that?” and that sounded bitter, maybe even angry but due to the circumstances—pretty damn appropriate.
Jin sighs. “You do. You do. I'm sorry. We should’ve considered your feeling on this, ___.” He pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs again. “This is a mess. Just...what do you want to happen here? You're in control.”
This is one of the few things you don't overthink.
“Let him go,” you say like it's the simplest thing. Namjoon startles next to you, quick to jump in but, “The cops can't really do anything because he didn't actually succeed in drugging me, thanks to Yoongi.” Your gaze is trained somewhere near the ground but even still you can feel his eyes burning a hole into the side of your head. “And like you said, Jin, they'd be bad for the business.” You shift your weight onto your other foot. “In all honesty, I think this is punishment enough.”
“I agree,” says Namjoon. “If the bruises he's sure to be sporting isn't enough to teach him a lesson, then I think pissing his pants in front of a hundred people will work just fine.”
“Agreed,” you exhale.
Jin seems to relax at this. A part of you is pleased to not have caused even more of an inconvenience to him. He's a good guy and a good boss. You don't want to bring bad luck here.
You plaster a smile onto your face. “Well, it's getting late. I'm...gonna leave now.”
“I'm really sorry this happened, ___.” And he does look sorry.
“No, it's my fault. I should’ve kept my eyes on my own drink.”
“No. It isn't your fault. At all. And you're welcome back here at any time, okay? Even if you don't want to just know that you're welcome.” For some reason that makes a lump form in your threat. You walk forward and grab his hand, smooth, warm, and huge. His other squeezes around yours once, just a quick pulse and it's amazing how so much kindness can travel through his touch into yours like current on a wire.
“Hyung, this guy’s heavy.” Jin seems to prickle a bit at the interruption before sighing in defeat.
And he looks it, you think. Skinny and lanky, but very tall. Just dead weight. January 18th, 2001, you recall from his ID. What happened in his seventeen years of life that turned him into the kind of person that could put street-run sleeping pills into someone’s drink.
That spike of distress returns. It isn't even fear, really. It's something much more complex—a certain combination of chemicals in your head with old memories that set you off, alters your perception of events like a change of filter. You don't want to see him differently though and that's the problem.
Even so… The boy's nose was bleeding and Yoongi got him pretty good on the countertop. He could have a broken rib. You glance up at Jin who seems to be debating options in his head. You're about to suggest something pretty far fetched like medical aid when Yoongi speaks.
“Throw him out back. He’ll leave if he comes to.”
You check his face for the first time in too long. Was that “if” wishful thinking or an adequate assumption?
He catches you looking, fierce protectiveness surprisingly leaving room for a gentle fondness in his gaze. Your heart skips a beat to dodge the ones his eyes throw at you.
He holds out a slightly bruised hand. Jin gently releases yours to give you an option to go to him. You don’t.
Yoongi’s hand falls limp to his side, fingers dangling. He shoves a fist into the pocket of his jacket and looks to the floor. He furrows his brows. "Namjoon, would you take ___ home, please?" "Of course—" You roll your eyes. "Thanks, Namjoon. But Yoongi's right here." You smile a little, and Namjoon returns it. He's happy with you, you can tell. Like he approves of how you're handling the situation. "You heard the lady." Without another word you grab Yoongi's hand and walk out of there, stopping only to give Namjoon a partial hug in appreciation. You pat Jungkook’s arm when you go by him.
The walk from the bar up to the main street isn’t bad. Yoongi keeps you talking, asking questions about your classes and your latest hobbies and you indulge him. You need the normal. But when the conversation falls into comfortable silence you can't help but wonder. What could've happened had no one seen, if Yoongi would have left earlier, if things would've gone according to that scumbags plan and something ugly climbs up your chest like vomit and you fight the sob down with a hand to your mouth. Breathing through your nose, too fast to be safe. A group of boys make a ruckus across the street and it occurs to you he could've had friends, he could've taken you somewhere and you'd be drugged and dazed, defenseless— It's claustrophobic, the feeling of being trapped in your body, in your own head and the blackness behind your eyes don't help. You open them, needing to see some scenery but only meeting cracked cement. When'd you get so close to the ground? "Hey, hey, ___? Take some deep breaths, okay? Just keep breathin' in and out, in from your nose, out from your mouth.” Like you were some newbie to the whole respiration thing.
You hate being babied. “Yoongi," and there's a part of you internally cringing at the raspiness of your voice. You'd hold out a hand but everything's shaking and tingling and your body doesn't feel like yours anymore.
“You're fine, you're safe. I got you. I'm right here, you’re okay.” It takes a moment for your eyes to focus but when they do, he's the first thing that becomes clear. His lips are in a cute pout, like a crestfallen kitty, all of this in front of you less than a foot away.
It's comin to you now, the both of you are crouched down in the middle of sidewalk on a Friday night. You throw out your hands and he pulls you to a standing position with no effort. You take your nails through your hair and crane your neck back, pat away a few more teardrop from the corner of your eyes and look at Yoongi. He looks adorably worried, almost antsy at being unable to touch you for so long. But he did a good thing, playing it safe. Had to be careful not to make things worse by touching you when your were like that.
It's you offering a hand since the few feet of distance between you has him at an arm's length. Your fingers tangle together and you draw him to you. He lets it happen like his body was born for that kind of inertia, such movements that lead him to you will remain that way, consistently, unless you say otherwise. Or something along those lines.
He sounds out of breath too when he grumbles, "You okay now? You fuckin’ scared me.”
“I scared you?” you blurt. He looks away.
“I'm sorry about that I just—”.
“No. Don't apologize. You haven't wronged me in any of way.” He searches your face for something.
“I just thought with, like, how pissed I got and everything…” He lets your mind fill in the blank.
“That it'd be a turn off?”
He bites back a smile. “Yeah. A turn off.”
You lick your lips and press them together, a pleased grin trying to slide its way onto your face. “I don't like violence, Yoongi. But I'd say you're anger was pretty justified.”
He says the next words like it’s something he isn’t sure he should admit. “I'm ain't gonna lie. I wanted to do worse.”
You nod, still maintaining eye contact. “I'm glad you didn't.”
He blows out a breath. “Any chance you wanna see me again after tonight? ‘Cause I had fun.” Then he furrows his brows. “Before that last bit, of course.”
“Of course,” you echo. “You know, Yoongi, as long as we stay on the same page I think this—” and here you gesture between the both of you,”—we’ll be okay.”
And he doesn't say anything to that, just smiles to himself. Hair being tousled by the late night breeze, cheeks dusted pink—who’s this sheepish young man, with the endearing smile? Where was he back there, you wonder.  This is a shade of Yoongi on the opposite side of the spectrum, so different than the one filled with bloodlust and rage from earlier.
You didn’t lie. Violence is not something you fuck with. Too many ugly things in this world as it is, who needs senseless fighting to top it off.
You aren’t a saint, though. And though authorities would’ve taught the kid a lesson, nothing scares boys straight better than a good ass whooping, unfortunately. Especially those with no respect for the law. Even more so for the ones with no respect for a woman’s body.
The words of Jin and Yoongi come to mind, which conjures more questions as to what side of the law they’re on. What lines were they willing to cross tonight and for whose sake?
You aren’t a saint. Neither are you a fool. The threat to your wellbeing wasn’t the only thing they were concerned with.
You’d definitely ask. ‘Cause leaving these types of things go unasked would only leave unwanted surprises in the future.
He laces his fingers with yours. The two of you fall into step on the way back to your place in silence, and in your peripheral you catch him surveying the surroundings, watching drunken youth walk sloppily through the streets in small clusters. He’s concentrated, or seems like it, so you don't think he’d notice you staring at him. His gaze cuts to yours suddenly. You cut off the ocular eye contact with a slight turn of your head, wrinkling your nose in embarrassment at being caught as you feign interest in a new bougie, overpriced apartments complex on the other side of the road. The amused sound he makes is throaty, barely loud enough for you to hear it, like maybe you weren’t meant to.
“What are your plans for the weekend?” You ask, boldly.
He looks surprised, but pleased that you asked. “I don't have any.”
“Do you wanna keep it that way?” Which would be perfectly understandable. Some folks need those two days of freedom more than people realize.
He makes a soft noise in disagreement.
“We could hang out then, listen to new music, watch a movie or something.”
“M’down. My place is shit but I got nice speakers. There’s this album I’ve been meaning to listen to for weeks now. But my mind wasn’t in the right place to listen to it.”
You can’t help but grin. “Is it now?”
“Yeah,” he says through plumped cheeks, all shy and smiley. “‘Cause of you, I think.”
You laugh, because the happy tension in your chest demands to be released somehow.
Though it’s not like you could’ve silently swallowed down the surge of joy even if you wanted to. Things tend to be like that with Yoongi by your side.

Cover Art Basics: How to Talk to an Artist
At the recent (fabulous) 20 Books to 50K Conference in Las Vegas last weekend, one of the speakers challenged the 450-odd authors there to think of something they could contribute to benefit their peers. It occurred to me that there is something, as an artist, that I am eminently qualified to speak about – cover design, and how to get the absolute best out of the artist you’re working with so you both end up happy with the finished product.
How not to commission
There are two things all freelance artists dread.
The first one is the “I want a cover that has sparkles and unicorns and bevelled typography and looks like [insert bestseller name here]. Can you do that for $50?” client. Don’t ever be that client. You will not get what you’re looking for, and your artist will be sad.
If you have $50 for a cover, you can expect a $50 cover. That’s the first thing to know: approach artists within your price range. It not worth anyone’s time: yours, or the artist’s. Find someone who probably works for the amount of money you have. Email them, give them a description of what you’re looking for (genre, examples of other covers, the pitch of your book) and ask them for an approximate quote. Most artists will happily reply with a quote, or an hourly rate and the expected number of hours your cover will take.
This leads on to the second thing artists talk about around campfires late at night: the client who has the money, but has no idea what they want or how to describe it. This is actually worse than the cheapskate, because the erstwhile freelancer can tell the cheapskate to get lost. If they have a paying and otherwise awesome client, their heart sinks as a conversation like this gets going:
Artist: “So, what kind of cover are you looking for?”
Client: “I don’t know. Something like… uhh… something with magic in it.”
Artist: “Okay. What kind of magic? Do you want characters? A dragon?”
Client: “I don’t know. It’s fantasy with a female MC. There’s demons and dragons later on in the series.”
Artist: “Dragons. Okay… I can work with dragons.” *creates thumbnail sketches* “Like this?”
Client: “Sure.”
Artist: “You sure you’ve approved this thumbnail sketch? The one with dragon?”
Client: “Sure.”
*Three weeks and 20 hours of painting later, artist returns with a cover.* “Here you go!”
Client: “Why is there a dragon there? I wanted a demon. I write urban fantasy with a demon hunter.”

Tumblr media
While slightly exaggerated, this kind of exchange is more common than you’d think. There’s also variation of the same string of communication errors where an artist provides exactly what an author thinks they want, but they don’t get the result they were seeking. The author can’t fault the artist, because they delivered exactly what they asked for… but what they asked for just doesn’t work for some reason. They go away feeling disappointed, unsure of why their cover isn’t as great as their fellow’s, even though they both had the same designer.
Here’s why.
How to speak Artist
An artist is capable of delivering within the constraints of two things: their skill and ability to fulfill a creative vision, and the author’s ability to describe their own vision and their needs. So as with all things in Indie publishing, the initial responsibility to form that creative vision of your cover starts with you.
To start with, go to Amazon or Kobo or whatever and pull up books in your genre. Make note of the following things:
Tumblr media
Even though the characters are interacting, the scene is very ‘still’.
Are the cover images static or dynamic? These qualities describe movement. Romance covers tend to be static, with half-naked people in various states of artful passion or, conversely, very well-dressed Victorian ladies (for Regency). But static. The people are standing around, sitting or posing, like portraits. By comparison, Action, Thriller, and Urban Fantasy tend to have dynamic covers, with action poses or interactive scenes. So do children’s books. Why do you think that is?
Are the cover images desaturated or saturated? Saturation describes the intensity of color in an image. The more saturated an image, the brighter and cheerier it looks. Horror and Memoirs tend to have desaturated, subdued palettes. Urban fantasy and PNR often have highly saturated colors against dark backgrounds, sometimes almost garish. The more desaturated something is, the more ‘dark’ (in terms of emotion’) and the more serious it seems. Very high saturation can make images look psychedelic. Find some desaturated covers and some highly saturated covers within your genre and see how they seem to be selling. Does bright and cheerful work better?
Tumblr media
Look at the way the covers use light. Light is the foundation of all art, and the skill of an artist can be measured in the way they use light to manipulate mood, emotion (yes, they are different – mood is the overall tone conveyed by setting, emotion is something you read in specific parts of an image, such as a facial expression or the placement of objects). The darker the content of the book, the less light there tends to be. What light there is will be seen in ‘slices’, such as flashlight beams or small focused sources (like the helmet above). BDSM Romance will have light used in focused, almost spotlight-like ways. In sweet, uplifting, or Christian Romance, you’re going to see a lot of sunlight, and diffuse, dreamy, yellow and blue light tones.
Tumblr media
What kinds of colors are used in the covers in your genre? Make a list of five or six (or two or three, if you write Horror. Hint: They’re Red, Dark Red, and Gray).
Make note of composition in your example covers. For example, in the Nicolas Sparks covers above, we have a series of very similar images that convey the very specific thing this author writes: emotional, love-focused, uplifting romance. We see that in the way the composition focuses on the people’s faces, closed eyes (a sign of trust), and their hands touching their lovers’ cheeks or necks. Note in all but one it is the man doing the clutching. That’s important – it tells us something about the expectations the readers have of the relationship dynamic between the characters. If you’re trying to indicate intense possession with body language, how would you go about that? What about ‘magic’?
Think about the emotion or ‘feeling’ you want to see in your book. If your book is dark, you can communicate this with low saturation, focused light sources, moody composition. If you’re writing contemporary women’s fiction, you probably want a lot of white, light breezy colors.
Tumblr media
Speaking of colors: Colors by themselves communicate a lot of different emotions and can be used to express personality. Goths wear stark black and red for a reason. So do vampires, for similar reasons. Red, violet, gold, silver… they’re colors that communicate opulence, passion and royalty. Good colors to use if you’re writing vampire regency romance (I assume this exists).
When you talk to your cover artist, these are the kinds of things you will want to know. Your artist doesn’t know your audience – not unless they’re a specialist in a certain sort of cover, and even then. Someone like Tom Edwards, who is very well known in the space opera market, produces images he thinks will work as covers. You, as the author, are going to know whether or not your audience prefers battling dynamic spaceships with drop marines dropping from drop ships or majestic whale-like battlecruisers with no people or dynamism at all. Look up Dead Space and Battlestar Galactica, and make note of the similarities and differences. Same basic genre – space opera – but one is horror and one is drama. Note differences in saturation, dynamism, palette, light, and composition.
When you go to an artist, you can use these as frames of reference. Let’s redo our dragon conversation from earlier:
Artist: “So, what kind of cover are you looking for?”
Client: “My book is Urban Fantasy with a female main character who is a demon hunter, and I’m competing with the likes of [this cover] and [this cover]. I’m looking for art with a central character figure, really high contrast and saturation in black plus reds and oranges – ‘Hell’ colors, and some high contrast ‘flash’ somewhere in the piece to indicate that she can use magic.”
Artist: *spontaneously orgasms* “Why yes, I can do that for you. Let me draw up some thumbnail sketches…
That’s the basics of image composition. Next post, I’ll discuss where typography fits in, and how you can correctly identify your perfect font.
