FINALLY got around to watching a playthrough of PPT chapter 4 and uuuhh it did not bring the fixation back like I hoped it would

I,,,, wasn’t really a fan of this chapter, captivated me more than 1 and 2 did but that isn’t exactly a high bar to clear

Doey is neat! I like his clay gimmick and conflicting personality, his concept is really cool! But I couldn’t really??? Bring myself to care about him?? He was kinda just there and I kept sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for him to either turn out to be evil -because GOD did his introduction make it feel like he was going to be a villain- or to have a bonding moment with the player. Which never happened

Same problem with Poppy, I feel like the game tries to gaslight you into thinking you care about or trust her so they can pull the nonexistent rug out from under you at the end ‘hah! Told you you couldn’t trust her!.. what do you mean you never did? That’s not how this is suppose to go’. I feel no sense of betrayal, I don’t feel her distress, I don’t CARE about her as a character. Which. Sucks! Cuz it makes the main moral conflict of blowing the factory up not matter because of course you’re going to side with Doey. He actually feels human, he actually tries to help, unlike her

The doctor and Yarnaby were also pretty good concepts! I enjoy their designs, they’re neat. The doctor’s robot segment was one of the two scenes I actually enjoyed in this chapter. Dear mob co please don’t tell me he actually died that anti climatically I’m going to riot

This chapter in general felt underwhelming. Unfinished. It felt like there was supposed to be more but there wasn’t. So many scene that seemed like they had more build up behind them then they did. And the lack of new cutout dialogue aside from Doey, Yarnaby, and Pianosaurus was so strange??? The critter’s cutouts felt especially out of place. Dogday’s dialogue especially lacks all the weight behind it that it had in chapter 3, the fact the screams are still there in full length makes it way worse. And what was the point of the nightmare critters???? They didn’t even get cutouts, if not for their Twitter teasers we wouldn’t know who any of these motherfuckers are! How did you manage to make a gang of characters even LESS utilized than the original critters?!? I’m glad they weren’t the focal point but holy shit why were they even there to begin with! Just replace the baba chops segment with Pianosaurus or a bunch of frozen together, broken little critters, that would’ve been neat!

On the topic of the little critters, these two predictably mean everything to me and the hint towards what Catnap could sound like normally is much appreciated

there are a lot of evil people in the world and a lot of darkness in the world and so it’s very important for me to stress that now more than ever is the time to spread kindness and compassion. combat the evil by not only not partaking in it, but actively refuting it. destroy the notion that being compassionate or generous or kind to someone is uncool or embarrassing or even scary. be the change you want to see. start a chain reaction. positivity only breeds more positivity. do an act of kindness for someone so that that person who is too afraid to do it themselves can see you, realize that they’re not alone, and perhaps sheepishly follow your example. and then the next person who is too afraid but sees that person can do the same. when bad news comes out about bad people or horrible atrocities in the world it’s such an easy impulse to despair, and obviously it’s important to feel what you need to feel. grieve. be angry. be sorrowful. be empathetic. but dust off your pants and get up and be a part of a chain reaction that, no matter how small the scale, and spread compassion and love and care. all the reasons why you might not—“it’s hard! it’s scary! people will make fun of me! it’s useless because there’s too much evil!” are all grade A arguments as to why you should. you have no idea how many people you could inspire to do the same. even if it doesn’t get you anyway far, you can at least say you have the nobility of trying. please choose love and please choose life. you are worth loving and you are worth inspiring others to love

one thing i really wanted to do with this au is reverse the initial dynamic we had in canon with these two; now sadness is the one who has to... "put up" with joy, be the more experienced and respected one of the two, not quite understand what her whole deal is, get frustrated with her optimism, and put some work in to understand her point of view.

samira's been a journalist for around six years by the time the story starts...and she's purposefully isolated herself and sidestepped having a coworker for all those years. suddenly gaining such a goofy, chaotic "partner" is...a bit much for sammy, initially. while she's as patient as ever, jane seems to have a talent for testing that patience. and what's with her rare moments of seriousness that she brushes off just as quickly? it takes sammy a while to stop viewing jane as an extra responsibility that's been dumped on her, and yet despite her insistence that getting stuck with jane is "just her luck" , a lot of her thoughts and time seem to be consumed by her...a suspicious amount, even... 🤔😳 and that's not even counting her endless notes (and doodles...) of solarflare.

annnd while felix himself has never met jane (even though he HAS very much met sol), he's frequently subject to sammy's complaints about her. not that he minds. maybe this strange mystery coworker can finally convince his best friend to stop wallowing in her misery all the time...
