Is Anwar Ibrahim government the beginning of a new political era or is it a false dawn?
Lim Kit Siang
This is the most important question of the 15th General Election on November 19, 2022.
I fully support the DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke in taking a stand prior to the formation of Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government, pledging DAP’s unconditional support to the Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.
But I can understand the frustrations, unhappiness, and disappointments from DAP members, supporters, and voters who felt that there was no fair reflection in the Cabinet composition based on DAP’s voting and parliamentary representation, and this must be noted.
I was not a candidate in the 15th General Election but I have been to eight states and clocked some 15,000 kilometres in the two weeks of the election campaign, and everywhere I went, I did not come across any anti-Malay, anti-Chinese, anti-Indian, anti-Dayak, anti-Kadazan or anti-Muslim, anti-Buddhist, anti-Hindu, anti-Christianity sentiment on the ground, confirming that Malaysians are the most tolerant and sensitive of people.
But during elections, there are political parties and personalities who want Malaysians to believe that the Malays and Islam are under threat and face extinction.
Why is this so? Who want to threaten the Malays or wipe out Islam?
I am optimistic about the future.
If the Anwar government can last five years, and we can explain that the fear that the Malays and Islam are being downgraded is a figment of the propaganda and the toxic politics of lies, fear, hate, race, and religion of irresponsible politicians in the information age, we stand a good chance to succeed in our mission to reset nation-building principles and policies as set out by nation’s founding fathers, which include the first four UMNO Presidents, for Malaysia to be “a beacon of light in a difficult and distracted world”.
I always believe that Malaysia can be a great plural nation because Malaysia stands at the confluence of four great civilisations — Malay/Islamic, Chinese, Indian, and Western — and if we can leverage on the values and virtues of these four great civilisations, Malaysia can be a great nation, better than the countries in the Middle East, China, India and Indonesia.
The most important challenge of the Anwar Ibrahim government is to ensure that it marks a new political era to reset the national agenda to return to the original nation-building principles of the nation’s founders, and that it is not a false dawn.
Now that I have withdrawn from the frontline of the DAP leadership, I will like to read the book “Why Nations Fail” which my friend, Kalimullah Hassan have given me many years back but I have had no time to read it.
I will like more leaders and academicians to discuss why Malaysia had failed in the last six decades to maintain her position as first-rate world-class nation to become a second-class mediocre nation, and how Malaysia can avoid becoming a failed, divided and kleptocratic state on Malaysia’s Centennial in another four decades.
The blurb on the book, “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty” by Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson, said:
“Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? “Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? “Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence?
“Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities.
“The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions–with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories.
“Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today.”
The Anwar Ibrahim government should mark the turning point of the country from a failing state to reset nation-building principles to restore our original dream to be one of the first-rate world-class nations in the world.

Have Yourself A Coronavirus Christmas
In “The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis, one of the hardships Narnia suffers under is that it is always winter but never Christmas.  Imposed upon the realm by the White Witch, the plot point serves as a powerful symbol of the extent to which despots are willing to suppress the basic joys of existence for the purposes of advancing their own agendas at the expense of those that they conspire to rule over.
For decades now, secularists along with those thinking they know how to organize the details of your life better than you do have conspired to impose any number of policies intended to disabuse the American people of their Christmas habits and more importantly the religious source from which such traditions stem.  Fortunately, the nation has yet to fully yield to this particular assault against their liberties and most have at least been alerted regarding this threat arrayed against our own underlying Western culture.
Unfortunately, the agents of tyranny are seldom discouraged.  Such operatives are always eager to try new strategies in the attempt to achieve their nefarious objectives.
Often the issue and policies are formulated in the following manner.  A government authority forbids the erection of Christmas decorations or the holding of a holiday celebration on public property.  But take heart, the discouraged yuletide reveler is admonished, you are perfectly free to commemorate these holidays in any way that you desire in the confines of your own home with whomever it is that you please.
However, now with the Conornavirus Plague, there exists a pretext by which thoroughgoing statists are unabashed regarding the extent to which assorted government bureaucrats and  agencies intend to intrude into the lives of average Americans to an even more unprecedented level.
For example, a number of jurisdictions have decreed the number of visitors that that will be allowed into your home, often limiting the number to ten guests.  And what if you allow eleven to fourteen; does it somehow though off the occultc numerology or Masonic geometry?
If that means cutting off family members from the family during Thanksgiving or Christmas, then so be it.  In the opening days of the New World Order or what is being called “The Great Reset”, the primary disease to be eradicated is not so much a virulent microorganism but rather the notion that you as a free individual should be able to decide for yourself the risks one is willing to take in a world fraught with any number of dangers.
Like the giddy urchins depicted in propaganda posters erected by dictatorships spanning the ideological spectrum, your joy is no longer to be derived from traditional notions of family or even personal relationships.  Rather that satisfaction is to be derived from knowledge of your dutiful obedience to the regime even if that means those small pleasures that gave life much of its meaning are obliterated in pursuit of collectivist goals and agendas.  After all, to paraphrase the motto of the Psi Corps from the drama “Babylon 5”, “The State is Mother. The State is Father.”
Just as bad and perhaps even worse than the state telling you how many may enter into your domicile is its functionaries telling you which otherwise perfectly legal activities you may or may not engage in while ensconced within the four walls for which you will no doubt be required to pay increasingly crippling taxes on in the years to come in order to finance economic amelioration efforts to address conditions imposed by the state to not only address the virus but also manipulate the masses into embracing extensive authoritarian intrusion into their lives.
For example, the state of California views itself as so all-pervasive that, in an act of beneficence, permission has been granted for the occupants of structures (for at this point of existential regulation can one really be considered a “home owner” any longer) and their permitted guests to engage in the basic excretory functions in the confines of the domicile's designated facilities.
In a number of microtyrannies (a phenomena I foretold the pending of over a decade ago), the assembled are forbidden from singing or chanting.  But it must be asked if the phrases articulated include “Black Lives Matter” or “This is what democracy looks like” (which apparently consists now of riotous mobs looting in the streets or assorted state functionaries imposing an increasing array of arbitrary restrictions in no way authorized by legislative law) does the edict still apply?  After all, one of the main lesson learned in 2020 is that the rules promulgated by the technocratic elites do not have to be obeyed when countermanding them in violent protest advances the revolutionary conception of social justice advocated by the aspiring planetary administrators.
In the attempt to make these deprivations and impositions supposedly easier to bear, propaganda disseminated through various venues assures that “We are all in this together.”  Nothing could be farther from the truth.
For example, throughout the 2020 presidential campaign, the rallies at which Trump devotees gathered to bask in their candidates stream of consciousness orations were condemned as “super spreader events” by the most thoroughgoing adherents of Harris/Bidenism.  Yet as soon as the establishment media declared victory for the Democratic ticket, these partisans and their affiliated masses swarmed into the streets ignoring most CDC decrees that have been invoked for months to keep you away from cherished loved ones, recreational pursuits, and houses of worship and are still in place to prevent you from enjoying the simple pleasures of life most fully.  Perennial media whore Charles Schummer was caught with his mask down until he realized a video camera was focused on his shenanigans.
In Washington DC, residents are discouraged from traveling outside the boundaries of the federal city and those coming into the district from jurisdictions characterized by high rates of Plague are threatened with demands to quarantine.  Yet Mayor Muriel Bowser traveled to Biden's victory announcement in Wilmington, Delaware.  This mere municipal functionary insisted such a pilgrimage was essential even though the office she holds is so insignificant that government there would probably operate more efficiently if it didn't even exist in the first place.
Relatedly, Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago invoked what listeners of “The Sean Hannity Program” might recall as the Ariana Huffington Doctrine when that perennial airhead responded as to why she was riding around in private jets when the average American was obligated to flagellate themselves over their own use of automobiles and fossil fuels in that these aircraft were going there anyway.  In a voice significantly less sultry than that of the flip-flopping Grecian pundit, Lightfoot excused her own frolicking amongst the Biden throng conspicuously failing to socially distance in that these celebrations would have taken place whether or not she participated.  Mind you, Lightfoot's contempt for the Almighty runs so deep that in the name of the Coronavirus dictatorship that she blocked access to church buildings and threatened to tow the vehicles of assembled parishoners.
Throughout nearly every level of government across America, pronouncements have been issued threatening punishment ranging from punitive fines to outright jail time for citizens daring to decide for themselves what otherwise perfectly legal and inherently moral activities can take place in their own homes.  Yet when the elected officials that ironically rank among the most strident in insisting upon unwavering obedience within their respective police state fiefdoms are caught violating their own restrictions, the errant such as California Governor Gavin Newson seem to think a rendition of Brenda Lee's “I'm Sorry” with Covid-specific lyrics ought to be enough.
See if the articulation of such formulations of contriteness prove sufficient when law enforcement operatives are beating down your door to enforce edicts that technically don't even arise to the procedural specifics of law.  These statements on the part of governors such as Gavin Newsom insinuate that the vanguards of the proletariat such as himself should be showered with celebratory gratitude for providing an incarnate example of exactly how we ought not to do in furtherance of the grand experiment of transformative revolution we now find ourselves thrust into.
This holiday season your once-vibrant elderly loved ones will slip deeper into cognitive twilight locked away in their once mentally stimulating assisted living communities now likely not much different than a cross between a prison and a loony bin.  Remember that as the governors yuck it up Etruscan  vomitorium  style ironically maskless and shoulder to shoulder in violation of social distancing decrees with the very hierarchs of the medical establishment bent on turning the nation into a pharmaceutical police state.

Beheading in France could bolster president’s claim that Islam is in ‘crisis’ – but so is French secularism
An homage to Samuel Paty, a instructor murdered after displaying caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed from the satirical journal Charlie Hebdo, Oct. 18, 2020. Adnan Farzat/NurPhoto through Getty Photos
A French highschool instructor who had proven caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to his class was beheaded on Oct. 16 by an 18-year-old Muslim refugee in what France’s President Emmanuel Macron characterised as an “Islamist terrorist assault.”
The killing is the newest high-profile assault by a Muslim extremist in France, coming after the 2015 bloodbath at Charlie Hebdo journal and the 2016 truck assault in Good. It additionally occurred two weeks after Macron gave a controversial speech defining Islam as “a faith that’s in disaster as we speak everywhere in the world.”
France, which colonized many Muslim-majority territories in Africa and the Levant within the 19th and 20th centuries, equivalent to Algeria and Mali, has Western Europe’s largest Muslim minority – 6 million folks, or 9% of its inhabitants.
Macron’s Oct. 2 speech outlined a legislative proposal to combat “Islamist separatism.” If handed in Parliament, it will basically ban home-schooling of all youngsters aged three and up and stop foreign-trained imams from main French mosques. The purpose, stated the president, is “to construct an Islam in France that may be suitable with the Enlightenment.”
Macron’s evaluation concludes, merely, that Islam is in some way at odds with fashionable Western society. However my analysis on state secularism and faith exhibits that the fact is far more sophisticated.

French versus American secularism
French secularism, which is embraced by each the progressive left and the Islamophobic proper, goes nicely past the American democratic idea of separating faith and state. Referred to as “laïcité,” it basically excludes spiritual symbols from public establishments. France has banned Muslim ladies’s headscarves in colleges and outlawed spiritual face coverings in all places. There aren’t any such bans in america.
Whereas each America and France have ongoing debates about “Islamic fundamentalism” and “Muslim terrorists” and views that may be outlined as Islamophobic and have some common assist, American democracy typically supplies higher alternatives for the mixing of varied spiritual teams.
In France, the Structure defines the state solely as secular, with out delineating the boundaries of that secularism. In america, the First Modification restricts the secular state’s engagement with faith, saying the federal government can neither set up a faith nor prohibit a faith’s free train.
It might be tough for the U.S. to announce, as Macron did, a state-sponsored venture to “forge a sort of Enlightenment Islam.”
Tumblr media

Certainly, 11 years earlier than Macron voiced his provocative view, U.S. President Barack Obama gave a well-known speech on Islam in Egypt in 2009, trying to reset the connection between America and the Muslim world.
Emphasizing Muslims’ contributions to American society, Obama stated, “It will be significant for Western international locations to keep away from impeding Muslim residents from training faith as they see match – for example, by dictating what garments a Muslim girl ought to put on.”
Obama’s speech mirrored an idealized American melting pot, a spot the place hyphenated identities like Muslim-American are widespread.
French secularism sees no hyphenated identities – solely French or Not French.
Islam and the secular state
Some in France additionally see this inflexible secularism as unequal to the challenges of multiculturalism and migration. The eminent scholar Jean Bauberot, for instance, defends a extra “pluralistic secularism” – one which tolerates sure spiritual symbols in public establishments.
France has in actual fact made many exceptions for Catholics. The federal government supplies substantial public funding to personal Catholic colleges, which educate a couple of quarter of all Okay-12 college students, and 6 of 11 official holidays in France are Catholic holidays.
Too usually, laïcité interprets into an unwillingness to accommodate the religiously primarily based calls for of Muslims.
In 2015, a Muslim advocacy group sued a municipal authority in France’s Burgundy area for refusing to supply an alternative choice to pork in public college cafeterias. The courtroom compelled the city to reverse its coverage, however not as a result of it violated spiritual freedom. The courtroom discovered the menu violated the youngsters’s rights.
France’s founding dedication to equality beneath the legislation likewise forestalls significant social debate on racial discrimination; its census doesn’t even accumulate info on race. Though France’s largest minority is generally composed of nonwhite Muslim immigrants from its former colonies in Africa and their descendents, Macron’s speech referenced solely in passing to French colonialism.

Blasphemy
That stated, I discover some fact in Macron’s speech. However the “disaster” dealing with Islam lies within the historic and political failings of the Muslim world, not within the faith itself.
As my 2019 e-book, “Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment,” paperwork, many Muslim international locations like Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia have long-lasting authoritarian regimes and continual underdevelopment. In 32 of the world’s 49 Muslim-majority international locations, blasphemy legal guidelines punish individuals who converse sacrilegiously about sacred issues; in six international locations, blasphemy is a capital offense.
These legal guidelines, which block freedom of expression, are extra rooted within the pursuits of the conservative clergy and authoritarian rulers than within the Islamic religion, my analysis exhibits. They really contradict a number of Quranic verses that urge Muslims to not coerce or retaliate towards folks of different faiths.
Nonetheless, in Western international locations the place Muslims are a minority, extremists sometimes take it upon themselves to punish those that, of their view, mock the Prophet Muhammad. That has brought on world controversies over cartoons and flicks. At occasions, in France and past, it has led to an unacceptable consequence: homicide.
Such killings, whether or not perpetrated by the state or by people, are tragedies. However to border them as a purely spiritual downside ignores the socioeconomic and political origins of Islamic blasphemy legal guidelines, and the anti-democratic cultural penalties of authoritarianism in lots of Muslim international locations.
It additionally overlooks the tough actuality that social alienation is an underlying issue within the radicalization of some younger Muslims within the West.
A number of secularisms, a number of Islams
Macron’s speech made some gestures towards better inclusion.
“I need France to grow to be a rustic the place we will educate the ideas of Averreos and Ibn Khaldun,” he stated, referencing two eminent Muslim thinkers of the 12th and 14th centuries, and envisioned “a rustic that excels within the examine of Muslim civilizations.”
That plural in “civilizations” is significant. It acknowledges that Islam shouldn’t be monolithic. Neither is French secularism. Each are advanced programs with diversified interpretations.
In reality, Macron doesn’t must “construct an Islam in France that may be suitable with the Enlightenment,” as a result of that already exists. Whether or not French secularism can adapt to Islam is one other query.

Rising inequality threatens world economy, says WEF
Income gap was behind Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s victory, says World Economic Forum risk report
Tumblr media

Wednesday 11 January 2017 | Larry Elliott
Rising income inequality and the polarisation of societies pose a risk to the global economy in 2017 and could result in the rolling back of globalisation unless urgent action is taken, according to the World Economic Forum.
Before its annual meeting in Davos next week, the WEF said the gap between rich and poor had been behind the UK’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election victory in the US.
And it warned that there were new threats to social cohesion from the robotics and artificial intelligence revolution. The organisation said fundamental reform of capitalism may be needed to tackle public anger.

The WEF’s annual global risks report – culled from 700 experts – found that rising income and wealth disparity, and increasing polarisation of sectors of society, were ranked first and third among the underlying trends that will determine the shape of the world in the next decade.
Climate change was considered the second most important underlying trend, with the WEF noting that environmental concerns were more prominent in the report than ever before.
Trump’s inauguration on 20 January coincides with next week’s Davos meeting and the founder of the WEF, Klaus Schwab, said 2017 would be a pivotal moment for the global community.
“The threat of a less cooperative, more inward-looking world also creates the opportunity to address global risks and the trends that drive them,” he said.
The WEF said the growing mood of anti-establishment populism meant economic growth was no longer enough to mend fractured societies and that “fundamental reforms of market capitalism” would now be needed.
The global risks report said Brexit, the US presidential election result and the referendum defeat suffered by former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi last month meant some people were now questioning whether “the west has reached a tipping point and might now embark on a period of deglobalisation”.
The US economist Dani Rodrik has coined the phrase “the globalisation trilemma” to capture the idea that countries cannot have democracy, national sovereignty and globalisation; they can only ever have two out of the three.
The WEF said recent events in Europe and the US suggested an “appetite for rebalancing towards democracy and national sovereignty”.
The WEF said it had been pointing out the dangers of rising inequality and political polarisation for more than a decade, but that the slow pace of recovery from the deep recession of 2008 had intensified income gaps within countries.
Emergency measures such as quantitative easing – the creation of money by central banks – had become permanent features of economic policy, and had exacerbated inequality by boosting the returns of those holding financial assets.
It added that the trends of recent years had come into sharp focus in 2016 with rising discontent and disaffection evident in the UK referendum and in the US with Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton.
“Urgent action is needed … to overcome political or ideological differences and work together to solve critical challenges,” said Margareta Drzeniek-Hanouz, head of global competitiveness and risks at the WEF.
“The momentum of 2016 towards addressing climate change shows this is possible and offers hope that collective action at the international level aimed at resetting other risks could also be achieved.”
The report warned that society was not keeping pace with technological change. It found that of 12 emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and robotics had the greatest potential benefits but also contained the greatest negative threats.
“Technology has always created jobs as well as destroying them, but there is evidence that the engine of technological job creation is sputtering,” the report said, citing evidence that only 0.5% of the current US workforce was employed in sectors created since 2000 compared with approximately 8% in industries created in the 1980s.
“Technological change is shifting the distribution of income from labour to capital: according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, up to 80% of the decline in labour’s share of national income between 1980 and 2007 was the result of the impact of technology.”
The WEF’s top five risks to the global economy for 2017:
1 Rising income and wealth disparity
Since the 1980s, the share of income going to the top 1% wealthiest citizens has increased in the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland and Australia – though not Germany, France, Japan or Sweden – says the WEF.
This group has shielded itself from austerity and the worst of the post-financial crash recession. Investments in new technology put a premium on workers with higher education and better skills, leaving the unskilled to languish on low pay, while globalisation has raised the incomes of the world’s poorer workers at the expense of those in the west.
The discontent this brings about “has now become an election-winning proposition” that demands action, says the WEF.
2 Changing climate
Climate change is ranked as the second biggest risk for this year, due in part to the increasingly frequent extreme weather that it heralds. While the end of the cyclical global weather phenomenon El Niño means 2017 is unlikely to top 2016 as the hottest on record, the Met Office forecasts it will still globally be one of the warmest ever.
The heat is also likely to be cooler in political circles after last year, which saw the Paris climate agreement ratified at breakneck speed and several other climate deals agreed.
This year governments must get on with actually delivering the carbon curbs they promised at Paris – as the WEF points out, the pace at which emissions are being cut is not yet fast enough to avoid dangerous global warming.
3 Increasing polarisation in societies
The WEF is concerned that democracy itself is in crisis. Policymakers and managers of public and private institutions have become divorced from their electorates both in terms of their cultural backgrounds and their pay and benefits.
Post-truth news media is undermining trust in pillars of the constitution, such as the judiciary. Austerity is hacking back at welfare provision for the vulnerable in society. And multiculturalism is under pressure from nationalism.
“This could be a pivotal moment in political history,” the WEF said, “and it requires courageous new thinking about how best to manage the relationship between citizens and their elected representatives.”
4 Rising cyber dependency
Amazon Echo’s virtual assistant Alexa adding unwanted items including doll’s houses to shopping lists is just one example of the problems arising from an ever more interconnected world.
An increasing amount of critical infrastructure relies, not just on information technology in general, but on the open internet in particular. This has brought great benefits but it also provides more opportunity for anyone hoping to wreak havoc through hacking attacks.
Beyond critical infrastructure, the developed world relies on the open net for a large proportion of economic activity. An estimated 10% of British GDP comes from the “internet economy”.
5 Ageing population
A quarter of Japan’s population is aged over 65, and the proportion is on track to reach 40%. Japanese people younger than 19 comprised 40% of the population in 1960, but are projected to make up just 13% of the population in 2060. The rest of the developed world, and much of the developing world, is heading in the same direction.
To fund welfare programmes, including a long-term care insurance begun in 2000 that ranks as one of the most generous in the world, Tokyo has run up a debt to GDP ratio of 240%.
This culminated in a plea for the fit elderly to look after the unfit, the disabled and ill. It could be argued that Britain’s current healthcare crisis is largely due to successive governments ignoring the lessons from Japan.
China is getting old at the point it gets rich, forcing it to address care and healthcare issues decades before western countries at a similar stage of development.
This article was amended on 13 January 2017. An earlier version referred to Japan’s budget deficit where its debt to GDP ratio was meant.

Why is it that you think changing characters races from white to PoC is okay, but not the other way? Especially when they're canonically white? I know you're probably going to ignore this but I think as an admin you have to defend yourself on this one. If it isn't ok one way, it isn't okay the other.
This is a jar full of major characters
Tumblr media
Actually it is a jar full of chocolate covered raisins on top of a dirty TV tray. But pretend the raisins are interesting and well rounded fictional characters with significant roles in their stories.
We’re sharing these raisins at a party for Western Storytelling, so we get out two bowls.
Tumblr media
Then we start filling the bowls. And at first we only fill the one on the left.
Tumblr media
This doesn’t last forever though. Eventually we do start putting raisins in the bowl on the right. But for every raisin we put in the bowl on the right, we just keep adding to the bowl on the left.
Tumblr media
And the thing about these bowls is, they don’t ever reset. We don’t get to empty them and start over. While we might lose some raisins to lost records or the stories becoming unpopular, but we never get to just restart. So even when we start putting raisins in the bowl on the right, we’re still way behind from the bowl on the left.
And time goes on and the bowl on the left gets raisins much faster than the bowl on the right.
Tumblr media
Until these are the bowls.
Now you get to move and distribute more raisins. You can add raisins or take away raisins entirely, or you can move them from one bowl to the other.
This is the bowl on the left. I might have changed the number of raisins from one picture to the next. Can you tell me, did I add or remove raisins? How many? Did I leave the number the same?
Tumblr media
You can’t tell for certain, can you? Adding or removing a raisin over here doesn’t seem to make much of a change to this bowl.
This is the bowl on the right. I might have changed the number of raisins from one picture to the next. Can you tell me, did I add or remove raisins? How many? Did I leave the number the same?
Tumblr media
When there are so few raisins to start, any change made is really easy to spot, and makes a really significant difference.
This is why it is bad, even despicable, to take a character who was originally a character of color and make them white. But why it can be positive to take a character who was originally white and make them a character of color.
The white characters bowl is already so full that any change in number is almost meaningless (and is bound to be undone in mere minutes anyway, with the amount of new story creation going on), while the characters of color bowl changes hugely with each addition or subtraction, and any subtraction is a major loss.
This is also something to take in consideration when creating new characters. When you create a white character you have already, by the context of the larger culture, created a character with at least one feature that is not going to make a difference to the narratives at large. But every time you create a new character of color, you are changing something in our world.
And that my friend is the raisin analogy (X) and I hope it helped you.

Koreans will not always have the opportunity to experience earliest love, or mutual sympathy during teenage years, as is traditional in our country. Because of having life ideas and probe in place of their pre-teen years most girls inside the Philippines are taught to please their very own parents, by no means consider actions that may shame the family, remain moral and upstanding so everybody in the spot knows they are “good girls”, fear the wrath with their angry fathers, dress appropriately so as to not appear to be a “loose girlfriend, ” and possess an overall “straight-laced” life until they find a better candidate for any husband.
When the Simple reformation emerged people’s thoughts were changing. Protestants presumed weddings needs to be orchestrated by a justice with the peace and this couples who were not fitted to each other are able to divorce freely. Unfortunately the legality of these philosophy were only valid for a short period of time before the Catholics once again renewed an older legal system. However the Protestants had been victorious in adding wedding vows to marriage ceremonies, a series of oaths and promises to treat each other with dignity and admiration, something that until then wasn’t really thought to be of particular importance. The vows lacked any legal authority but they were one step in the right direction.

You may ask why would probably Korean brides to be want currently men right from abroad? Oriental culture in too stern but it shouldn’t turn local brides in snow queens”. Korean young girls find it as well difficult to find appropriate partners inside their home country. Community brides are smart, hard-working, regimented, family-oriented, and living but they are unlucky in love. Regional men are definitely not keen on the idea to get married to and develop families. This kind of us what forces community girls to locate intended for partners abroad. Girls right here conservative thoughts about relationship and marriage. That they dream of a cheerful family and kids their minds full of like and they imagine sharing this with males who admire the same.
By the way, when you advised your fiance you don’t want him to send cash, you would a good thing to get building his trust in you. He then does a good thing by telling you is actually not wrong for a future husband to receive cash from her soon being lifelong spouse. This seems like a good relationship beginning with trustworthiness and trust between the two of you.
Since you are interested in a Korean language mail buy bride, it could be reasonable to consider that you will most probably find involvement in Asian culture as well. Communications in your way on the path to your potential Korean star of the event will be method easier whenever both of you know and speak the local language.
Korean females strive for international husbands because of the classic impact on that are prevalent in Parts of asia. By default, the male figure commands respect and reverence even though the females are expected to grow in quiet and almost out of the limelight.
We have 3 categories of older gals, middle from ages ladies, and young ladies. In person, I prefer an individual at least 20 years the younger. Why? Since they have energy, enthusiasm, a positive outlook toward their potential new existence, and just plain youthfulness. I actually didn’t formerly start out searching for a really youthful wife nonetheless it ended up doing this. I collection the search engine in FilipinaHeart to look for a candidate candidates that had been 35 to 45 like we are taught to choose in the U. T. – 10 to 20 years younger than myself. However the next time I went on this website, the search engine totally reset itself for the purpose of 18 to 45. I’ve no idea so why the lower number reset nevertheless the higher a single didn’t. Immediately there were so many of new possibilities and the absolutely adore of living was in generally there. So I will have a Filipina wife that is 32 years younger than myself.
This woman is automatically developed from arrival to work at a paid out job always but be mindful about that. She could go find the lowest paid job in the area and think she’s succeeding because it appears to be much higher than she would generate in the Korea but you know it’s certainly not and that living expenses are much higher in this article. I’ve also found that a sugary and kind Filipina will more often than not start to pick up feminist, bitchy, attitudes right from female co workers and her personality will change because this woman is around them a whole lot. Filipino people are born copiers and cloners so she is going to absorb many methods from others. Did you know enjoy the result of her working with a bunch of crabby gossiping ladies.
Do Korean language Women Have got Family Ties?
Over the last few decades, men’s affinity for Korean girls has significantly increased. As you can see love is definitely a recent idea when it comes to marital life and when that concerns the law the idea doesn’t seriously know what best for the people. Marriage has long been used to discriminate, prosecute, and harass. Easy methods to a tool for bigotry and ignorance. It is been seen in religious and nonreligious adjustments. Laws and politics have always said a lot about marital life but sometimes individuals have an overabundance to say. Make sure you continue reading since my subsequent article represents different types of marriage by arranged marriages, child brides, polygamy, and even the odd circumstance of polyandy, when one particular woman usually takes several partners. Or perhaps you’d like to learn about distinctive forms of family instead.
In the event they’re seriously interested in a romance with YOU rather than just wanting to conquer here to the promised area of dairy and honies, then they’d be willing and want to speak to you designed for an extended period of time to discover you well. Being rapide about you approaching over isn’t a characteristic of the Filipina you need to marry, in my view. It’s not your matter if others are talking her up without wishing to commit. They have something they should endure if perhaps they’re going to be online for that husband. A Filipina who’s cautious and takes time to discover you is normally worried about your ability to possess deep thoughts for her, worried about you possibly coldly treating her as an inanimate residence cleaner and baby developer, you as being a hot head who sounds wives, you being an alcohol or drug addict, etc . She really wants to “probe” you with dialogue to satisfy her curiosity about somebody she’s planning upon spending other parts of her life with and would not mind many months of communicating.
It’s healthy for you to be cautious but never be THEREFORE cautious that you just miss your perfect diamond necklace. I entered this while using attitude that out of a country of 89 , 000, 000 people which more than 50% are woman, I would get the perfect pal that I was meant to meet up with. If that took 12 months, I’d hold out it out. If this didn’t, I’d personally be happy that we didn’t need to wait it. I found my wife’s account the very first evening I seemed on FilipinaHeart, she was in my favorites in the future for the next 3 days, and she was the first We wrote to. Maybe I lucked out, maybe this lady was suitable for me ahead of I even got at this time there. I believe we were meant to get together and get married to. But which just me personally.
You have a very high chance to meet many sole and single women on-line. You will be excited by how sugary, and kind regional women happen to be. They will demonstrate respect; they are interested in conntacting you and causing you to fall in love with all of them. Asian-Western marriage is considered the strongest. The divorce fee is twenty percent compared to marital relationship between people today belonging to the same competition. It’s not really a huge surprise that so many guys prefer to date and marry Oriental girls.
sixty two Interesting Korean War Particulars. The Korean language War begun at some: 30 a. m. about June 25, 1950, and ended about July twenty seven, 1953. Compared to WW II, there are few movies regarding the Korean language War. There initially were 6. eight , 000, 000 American individuals who served during the Korean language War period, by June 27, 1950, to January thirty-one, 1955.
But the term is certainly widely used which includes application of it is negative associations; the primary an individual being the concept of buying a female from a catalog. Further more, there are ramifications, derived from its initial application to Asian women, that define the form of women readily available from a catalog.
Jamjuree From Daejeon, Korea, Southerly Seeking For Guy
A mail-order bride is actually a woman who data herself in catalogs which is selected by a man with regards to marriage. Don’t think because the father is a water pipe fitter that he’s making a lot of money. It’s nothing like Journeyman Tube Fitter income in this region. He’s continue to probably lucky to make $5, 000US per year even if your dog is doing perfectly by their lesser standards. It’s not uncommon for that doctor for making $12, 000 a year until they have the possibility to come to the U. S. and make 15X as much per year.
The website is home to sexy and hot Korean language women meant for marriage. Signup for free and browse through user profiles that participate in the lovliest girls in Korea. Seek out young or perhaps mature ladies. View their photos and save your preferred Korean birdes-to-be. Find about single Korean females who want to time frame and get married to Westerners. Read their very own informative single profiles and viewpoint their personal photos. AsianBeautyOnline has a exciting interface and simple navigation in order to men to take pleasure from their period spent on the website.
I have to differ though. Whilst I’m sure there are plenty who do that very effectively, and I spoken to a few young girls while discovering my wife that I’m sure might, not all are searching for a scam sufferer to fund their families in high class, and give money with their illicit sweethearts. My blog page is actually about being careful to not receive stung, i really warn https://buyabrideonline.com/korean-women men to be careful.
I actually also feel that asking you if you are coming over may be a test at the girl’s portion to see if you are already thinking about coming over to select from a number of applicants instead of just browsing her only, or if it is just to have got a sex spree across her nation, etc . because she realizes you don’t have spent sufficient time to be interested in her however. She possibly doesn’t get a handle on how much a trip over presently there costs you or she actually is baiting you to see what their answer will probably be.
Angry jelous women after that, jajaja. Let me revise the silver digger portion, this article is old. The answer you gave it “like all of the countries you will find women aiming to be maintained”, that is what I highlighted. The article is “How to Date Colombian Women” as well as the relationship I realize between foreigners and colombian women is the fact one just. I i am talking to that crowd, the web dating picture. And I include tasted equally ways of Colombian women, the gold digger and the right ones. And met a whole lot of golden diggers, that may be what I find out. But I will revise and atone this article. Is avoid the object of denigrating.
Another advantage you will like when you understand Korean vocabulary is that you will see that incredibly simple to make a good first impression while using parents of the potential Korean language bride. Communicating with her father and mother in the local words is highly vital, especially during a family union dinner. By impressing her family, you will discover it easier to marry a Korean woman.
Colombian young girls can be hard to know. Sometimes they manage to dress to incite and they are very sexual in their actions. Compared to other cultures, physical contact is very normal and they may well stay near to you. But will not interpret this as in invitation to crib them, try it out and you will ruin everything.
The Xiongnu or Hephthalite are not Israelites. Xion and Zion are just punctuational conincidence. Among the chapters in my publication talks about “The Tower of Babel” that can answer your question exactly who the Xiongnu were. Xiongnu were bloodstream thirsty and wicked barbarians that caused a lot of troubles to China. These were finally conquered by the Chinese army in the Han Dynasty and got sent from the East fleeing to the West. At this time there, they started to be the well known Huns where a mighty soldier, Attila, came about and dominated them. They turned out to be a great enemy of your Romans.
blah blah blah, all this speak about Filipino women of all ages. These men whom said undesirable things about us I’m sure are good men (eyes rolling). The majority of these men who are going on about how crazy Filipino females are anticipate a obedient, compliant, acquiescent, subservient, docile, meek, dutiful, tractable wife that might give them the every whim and if a girl can’t squeeze into that field, they are disappointed. Expect to receive 100% if you’ve given your 100%. In any other case, it’s called karma. You get the things you give. There are good and rotten kinds and stop categorizing us like we are a fruit group.

Anime: is it changing for better or Worse
This is a editorial piece i created for an extended project at College, it is a good example of the kind of writing i can create and the vain of editorial that i would like to create in future for potential & hopeful entertainment journalism jobs.
If you read this editorial and have any positive or negative criticism please feel free to message me that criticism. Be kind xD, this is like one of the first things i written on this sort of scale. Hope you enjoy this if you read it.
Is Anime changing for better or worse?
Anime is a Japanese pop-culture behemoth that has grown from its mid-20th century origins to a near worldwide phenomenon in the 2010s. Personally, I have been a dedicated fan of anime for around three to five years although I was aware of the medium since I was around 5 or so spending a lot of my childhood watching kid-oriented 4kids dubs of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Anime has become one of my favorite entertainment mediums with beautifully sad movies such A Silent Voice, Thrilling Psychological films like Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue and interesting adventures shows like Made in Abyss, a great bustling fanbase and a huge amount of wonderful and genius crew members who work on anime; living and dead. However, it is also a medium that I have so many problems with from the ridiculous treatment of the people who work in it to the shaky western approach to the medium and the crazy over-saturation there is in the amount of pandering generic anime. So here at the start my opinion on anime is as follows; yes, anime is something I love and will continuously support due to the amazing content and creators in anime but as an industry it is so intensely toxic with all the behind the scenes problems it cast a bleak shadow over anime and as it continues to grow larger and goes further than ever before the shadow glooms darker.
Anime took Japan by storm in the early 1960s with Osamu Tezuka’s revolutionary animations such as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. Even though Tezuka’s work weren’t the first animes they were the first to gain a big level of traction. Tezuka’s animes led the way for other iconic animes such as 70s greats like Lupin III and Mobile Suit Gundam. The 80s booms of anime with staples such as the first Ghibli films, Akira and Dragon Ball. The 90s produced new age classics such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the shell, Pokémon, Cowboy Bebop and Sailor Moon. The 2000s came soon after adding more iconic animes with shows like Death Note, Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, One Piece and the Oscar award winning Ghibli film, Spirited Away growing the anime community to new heights.
Now in the 2010s anime is still growing in popularity with shows like Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online, One Punch Man, Tokyo Ghoul, Yuri on ice, Boku No Hero Academia and the highest grossing anime film of all time; Your Name leading the future of the medium. Over the life span of the anime industry it has grown from a small medium in the 60s which was mostly based in japan to something that became a cult phenomenon outside of its Japanese home of a genre in the late 90s to becoming a near worldwide mainstream hit in modern day. The fact that each decade there is at least a handful of shows produced that gain big fan acclaim shows and are remembered years later shows that anime has always been strong in its ability to produce great content and as time progresses more and more shows are getting noticed by anime fans. In the 60s there might have been around 5-10 shows that are still remembered today, but three decades later in the 90s easily 20-30 shows have stuck with the anime fanbase to today.
Western fans of anime have gained the name Otakus a Japanese word which celebrates their love for a medium such as anime. In the internet era a term has been coined "Weeaboo" which is a negative word to call someone who is an anime fan, a Weeaboo or Weeb is someone who watch anime but stupidly and ignorantly disrespects the culture, bastardise it and acts like Japanese culture is their own culture. Let me just state for the record, most anime fans are not Weebs but a select few fit their descriptions and their loud obnoxious personalities make the public sadly see them as these derogatory things. Sadly, it is common for society to see the worst in a community and see the bad as the norm for the entire group even though it might not be entirely true. Being a fan of anime for many years I have seen into the anime fanbase and have only come across individuals who fit the weeaboo archetype maybe once or twice out of 100s if not 1000s of individuals on numerous social media platforms.
Although the anime industry clearly has hit a big level in over-saturation in the amount of series it produces, it’s large quantity has opened-up the industry to many new and great creators. In the wake of the call for more series to be produced more talent has been brought to anime. In the world of directing, new visionary directors such as Makoto Shinkai are being brought to the industry creating some of the most beautifully crafted animations ever made with great music, art and story such as his films 5 centimetres per second, The Garden of Words and of course Your Name. Great musical talent that previously was neglected or ignored by Japan is now acknowledged with artists such as TK, Myth & Roid, Teddyloid and Daoko giving their vocal talent as more opening themes are needed. New Composer, Hiroyuki Sawano has become an iconic anime composer, composing music for many action animes that have come out in the big surge of animes in the last few years. Of course, voice actors or seiyuus as they are called in Japan are still very integral to anime with them being even more needed with more animes being produced with new voice talents such as Rie Takahashi, Jun Fukushima, Sora Amamiya and Inori Minase doing numerous voices a season, although this can be very taxing on a seiyuu with low pay and over working. Whole new studios have formed to combat the demand for new animes such as the crazily imaginative studio Trigger, WIT Studio, NUT, Kinema Citrus, MAPPA and Lerche that feature talent that will go on to shape the world of anime.
Even if the landscape of anime is changing the creators of old, those who shaped the world of anime before anyone else won’t be forgotten. Works from directors such as Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda, Animes made by Studios Madhouse, Production I.G, Gainax and Bones and iconic openings from J-pop history legends such as Flow, Asian Kung Fu Generation, The Pillows, Kumiko Noma, Yoko Takahashi and The Seatbelts. The individuals who make the anime that anime fans consume and adore, have always been the shining beacon in the many problems of anime and right now more than ever with the abundance of cast and crew needed to staff all the anime is made, this beacon is shining brighter than it has ever before.
Anime is typically released in waves with a handful of shows being released every seasonal period, the seasons being; Winter season that lasts from January to March, Spring season from April to June, Summer season from July to September and finally Fall season that starts in October and ends in December and then the cycle resets.
A big problem in the anime industry in 2018 is the level of anime that’s produced; anime production has become much more quantity over quality in the past few years. With over forty-three new anime tv series being released in just the short time span of the winter 2018 season alone. Not including the eight series that are ongoing from the previous season, the four animes that came out exclusively to Netflix and the eleven-short form shows that also were released during the period. In total that’s sixty-six different anime series being released in the space between just two months, 66 in 2 months is a ridiculous amount. In winter 2016 sixty-two Tv animes were released, in winter 2014 sixty-seven Tv animes were released again similar big amounts of animes being produced, but in the winter of 2012 only twenty-six were released and in winter 2010 only twenty-one came out.
So, what changed, well simply the anime industry grew to new heights with the birth of streaming sites, Crunchyroll and Funimation. Crunchyroll started as a website that hosted anime illegally at its creation but eventually became officially licensed in 2009 and in late 2012 to 2013 it took off as the best place for western anime fans to legally consume anime soon after it aired in Japan. Funimation is a company that has played a big part in the anime industry since the mid-90s being the main distributor for anime in the west, allowing numerous shows to be brought to home video and Tv and had a big part in the creation of official localizations of animes for non-Japanese speakers in the forms of both accurate subtitles and professional dubbing. Funimation eventually made a mark on online streaming giving the type of quality they give but online, the companies streaming is now known as FunimationNow with it primarily focusing on streaming of dubbed anime giving a majority of its subbed anime to Crunchyroll though a partnership the two companies developed in 2016. Once Japan saw this they clearly and naturally saw it as a great business venture and produced more and more content to give Crunchyroll, Funimation and their competitors, which clearly paid off as in 2015, the export value of the anime industry reached a new high of 349 billion yen and in 2016 the anime industry reached an industry income milestone of 2.9 trillion yen with a large portion being from export value. Yes, it works well in a business standpoint but is it worth the cost of the anime content itself and the backlash the fans and people in the industry have towards the over-saturation.
Others saw the success of Crunchyroll & Funimation and clearly decided to jump on the bandwagon while it’s still piping hot. Netflix and Amazon are the two biggest culprits of doing this, both streaming sites had some animes on their streaming sites prior to the anime streaming boom even though they were mostly just shows that had reached an audience outside of the usual anime sphere. Netflix and Amazons approaches to anime are in no way to the standard of streaming that we as western anime fans have come to expect with Crunchyroll & Funimation. Crunchyroll is probably the best thing to happen to the western anime scene in the 2010s, even though it has had small missteps such as the badly run Crunchyroll anime awards and its shaky legal issues in its origins. The biggest draw of Crunchyroll is the fact that they release the anime within an hour of it airing on Japanese Tv networks such as the NHK with the shows being subbed also within that hour, much quicker than some not so legal streaming sites can get the shows uploaded and subbed; with the subbing being not terribly accurate. Amazon seems to understand the importance of trying to bring new animes as soon as possible vowing to do so; when they became heavily involved in anime streaming in 2017, the airing of shows was terribly unreliable with shows sometimes appearing hours or a day late something that won’t help a new service get off the ground. Netflix for the most part completely ignored this crucial part of anime streaming, with them only bringing the animes they had the licenses for months later after they finished airing, you could argue this was done to fit the Netflix model of series being released all at once. However, with US live-action shows such as Orphan Black and Better Call Saul being added to Netflix as they air on Tv, it raises the question of why they aren’t doing this for their anime shows. They might have finally realized that they need to do simulcasts of animes to keep up with the competition as this past season they released Kyoto Animations’ long-awaited anime series Violet Evergarden as it aired in Japan, although this is one show out of the handful of shows they have licenses for in the 2018 winter period. Another reason why the streaming scene has been so successful for the last few years is because you would be able to go to one of the big two streaming sites and be able to view most of the biggest and best shows on one site for one cost. Now that Amazon and Netflix have joined the fray the licenses for animes are spread all over the streaming space. In the past you could go to just Crunchyroll or Funimation and find all the shows you’d want to watch from a new season albeit maybe one or two being hosted by smaller sites.  But now every new season five shows you want to watch might be on Crunchyroll, three might be on Netflix and two other great ones might be on Amazon. You see the problem, right? If the average avid otaku wants to check out all the shows that interest them in a release season they must pay out to get numerous streaming sites. Amazon took advantage of the anime fanbase when they got into anime streaming, gating their animes behind an extra paywall in places such as the states where you would have to buy amazon prime and then buy amazons anime strike service on top of prime; thankfully they realized the negative backlash and finally got rid of the extra paywall at the start of this year.
In the case of Netflix, you must wait months for Netflix to actually utilize the licenses they own and then you’re paying for months in between new releases with nothing new. It’s so anti-consumer the way licenses are strung around the different sites and the way that amazon and Netflix give their anime. It makes otakus feel more inclined to use illegal sites or download torrents which hurt the industry and those who work hours upon painful hours making these animes. But when they make it seem like their working against the consumer they don’t help themselves. They make the free illegal alternative sites appealing which is so wrong, with the expensive numerous expensive sites and the abnormal streaming methods of both Amazon and Netflix. Even though Netflix certainly aren’t the best when it comes to dealing with bringing Tv animes to Netflix they are trying to help the industry by funding anime studios to make animes purely for them which they can release in a binge format, with Netflix reportedly putting a large part  of their 2018 budget into funding animes, Anime would represent about a quarter of their new content. Funding shows by studios such as Bones and WIT studio who are two of the biggest anime studios who created the two biggest action series of 2017; Boku No Hero Academia 2nd Season and the long awaited second season of Attack on Titan, respectively. This has proven good for the industry with shows like Devilman Crybaby which would never have been allowed to be created on Tv due to its crazy soundtrack, unique art and very mature content now having somewhere to belong. Netflix’s approach to funding the industry could really help excel it into the mainstream and if they can do simulcasts like Crunchyroll, Netflix could take over the western anime scene.
If you have been anywhere in the anime community sphere in the past six-ish years, you have probably seen someone bashing on a little-known series called Sword Art Online (SAO). I’m not trying to beat the already dead horse that is SAO hating just trying to add to the conversation and add a view on it that I personally haven’t seen before in the numerous articles and YouTube videos on SAO, SAO’s repercussions on anime.
But just in case for anyone who hasn’t heard of Sword Art Online…Sword Art Online, is an anime based off a light novel that took over the industry and shaped it for worse. Sword Art Online (SAO) came out in 2012 to commercial success, critically the show was not a success; the show had many problems from its contrived borderline creepy romance storylines, shallow character arcs, inconsistent animation quality & its non-existence understanding of the video games mechanics when its video game based. The show is of the Isekai (another world) genre, Isekai series typically feature the protagonist getting trapped or transported in another world; in the case of SAO the protagonist, Kirito and 100s of other gamers get stuck inside of a video game. The protagonist, Kirito is a typical young adult with black hair (the most common hair colour in the world) who before entering an isekai is a socially numb shut-in and once he enters the isekai is overly powered and unbelievably hopelessly attractive to everyone. Kirito is something known as a self-insert protagonist which is a protagonist that is designed in a specific way so that the average anime watcher can easily connect to the character and practically insert themselves into the character and then get invested in the show. Even though the show is terribly flawed from a critical standpoint it was still very popular due to its intriguing concept, its self-insert protagonist and was very successful commercially. The anime industry saw the cash cow SAO became and unfortunately ran with it. Then the flood gates opened, once SAO ended numerous other anime producers created shows in similar veins. Isekai changed from something that was used sparingly in anime to something that became its own genre, every seasonal period contains one or even a handful of Isekai shows. There was also a bigger influx in the amount of self-insert protagonists where before these types of protagonist were kept to just tongue and cheek romcom harem animes, now they appear in romance dramas and even some action shows. Light novel adaptions also have become much more common place as many Japanese light novels have self-insert protagonists and intriguing yet hollow premises. Even though SAO led the way for so many trashy by the numbers samey light novel isekai animes there are some good shining through such as Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru isekai Seikatsu which starts as a basic isekai show with a self-insert protagonist that later turns into a meta character building show with surprises around every corner with twisted time travel twists. Re: Zero and maybe 4 other shows are diamonds in the much larger rough which aren’t worth the Isekai insane oversaturation that SAO caused.
Just like the west have taken anime and adapted to our streaming platforms, they have also adapted it in other ways. Hollywood have leached onto anime as of late, after anime being around for numerous years they were bound to take a stab at trying to milk it for money and now that it has gained near mainstream popularity in the last 10 to 15 years they have taken stabs. Three notable stabs from Hollywood at anime were their live action adaptations of Dragon Ball, Ghost in the shell and Death Note. These three adaptations made Hollywood a quick buck due to the names that are tied to them but were all critical failures from fans and critics alike. These adaptations completely miss what makes anime, anime. They change plot, characters, cultural differences and ultimately brutalize what made them good to begin with. The Dragon Ball movie titled Dragon Ball: Evolution was just a complete train wreck that tried to condense the entire plot of a 200+ episodes anime into a less than 90 minutes long movie with terrible script, acting and CGI. The Ghost in the shell movie and Death Note movie were still pretty darn terrible but at least they were kind of competent at being movies with decent effects, passable scripting and acting. But both just felt like empty lifeless imitations of their predecessors. Ghost in the shell turned from an iconic cyberpunk with punchy dialogue and stellar visuals to pretty much a bog-standard action sci-fi flick.
Death Note’s Live action version completely misses the originals appeal, the original anime was a tense psychological drama as we saw the protagonist Light a genius anti-hero who is popular, trying to avoid getting caught by the master detective, L; Light manipulates those close to him and practically is the antagonist even though he’s the protagonist. In the Hollywood version Light is still an anti-hero and is still trying to avoid getting caught by L but he’s not a genius and instead is a moody outcast, he doesn’t manipulate those close to him, he gets manipulated. One of the biggest parts of the anime was how Light manipulates a character called Misa Amane, we see how far he’ll go to get his goals and how far he’s fallen; in the live action its almost like the roles of Light and Misa had reversed with Misa, changed to Mia in the live action manipulating Light and makes Light have another adversary for no reason except for just creating unnecessary drama. On top of this, in the live action version they take away the tense psychological theming and replaces it with over the top gory death scenes, the Death Note anime does have death scenes but their never overly extreme just to shock the deaths in the anime are much more about how Light manged to kill them. Overly Gory deaths isn’t and never should be Death Note.
Where the west completely fails with its live action adaptions, it excels for the most part in its cartoon shows it has produced in the past few years that are heavily inspired. It is not unusual for a western media product to take influence with people like the Wachowskis siblings who were inspired by Ghost in the Shell when they made The Matrix in the 90s. But in the last few years the anime inspired western content has been much more frequent. RWBY, Castlevania, Voltron and Legend of Korra are four western shows that are very anime inspired in storytelling and animation styles. These shows are all held in high regard by fans and critics alike, largely because of how much they are like anime in the way they are more mature like anime is than the usual run of the mill western cartoon were most adult cartoons are just comedies and not serious like these four examples. Of course, there’s exceptions to these great western anime inspired shows one notably being, Neo Yokio that was co-created by the US and Japan which was poorly animated with terrible voice work and just a mess in terms of tone. Other than Neo Yokio, anime inspired western content is pretty great and doesn’t seem to be slowing down in terms of quality. This is one of the better parts of the wests approach to anime.
Japan has an overworking problem, it is something that is prominent in most Japanese industries and Anime is no different. On average an animator or mangaka (an artist for manga) work 10hrs + a day in uncomfortable conditions this is because they are paid on the amount of work they get done not on a set pay roll like a normal job. This leads to either people giving up on their anime industry dreams due to the insane pressure to get work done with short deadlines or overworking themselves to poor health; mentally and physically, or in extreme cases to death. Overworking is such a problem in Japan that the Japanese made a word to describe death by overworking, Karoshi. In the past few years industry greats have passed away most likely because of Karoshi. In 2017, Hiromi Tsuru, a seiyuu who was famous for her work as Bulma in the Dragon Ball series died from Aortic dissection which is often caused by high blood pressure. High blood pressure is very common from stress which is common in overworking in stressful conditions, so her death is most likely Karoshi. In 2010 a staff member at the animation studio, A-1 Pictures committed suicide; Shinjuku Labour Standards Inspection Office cited depression due to overwork as the cause and medical facilities caring for the staff member recorded that he worked 600 hours a month. The problem of overworking and Karoshi is already a big problem in japan and the Japanese anime industry is not helping this change, in fact its making it a whole lot worse.
I love anime but hearing about these cases are so disheartening and upsetting, I believe that anime is a great artform and it should be something that should have a lot of time focused upon it but when people are dying for the making of anime. It makes anime not worth it. As I mentioned much earlier in this essay the anime industry is making more money than it ever has at 2.9 trillion yen which translates to one billion nine hundred fifty-nine million eight hundred twenty thousand pounds. If the industry is making as much as it says why are those in the industry being payed so little, those who work in anime are payed practically pennies. In November of 2016 an animator who works for the studio, P.A Works posted a picture of their budget on their twitter and according to that budget the highest pay the animator got was 67,569 yen (£456) in October 2016. For the number of hours that the staff put in and their health that they risk just to make a living and to achieve a dream of working in anime that kind of pay is disgusting.                                                                                                       On a lighter note now that anime has opened more to the west and westerners are hearing about the conditions of working on anime in japan, some westerners are reaching out to try to support creators, so they don’t have to overwork themselves as hard such as the 2017 animator dormitory project which was a fundraiser for animators to have stable living conditions. The project was able to raise $26,442 USD to help animators.
This whole situation gets even more ridiculous when overworked creators become too ill to even do their work. Hunter X Hunter is a very famous manga and anime series; its mangaka, Yoshihiro Togashi is clearly very overworked. Hunter x Hunter has been in publication since 1998. It is meant to be a weekly series appearing in the Japanese magazine, Weekly Shounen Jump. Out of the 20 years that its been in publication its actually only appeared in Shounen Jump 382 (39.3%) of the 971 potential times it could of. That means that in the past 20 years, Togashi could have not been payed for 589 weeks out of the 971 weeks he has been making Hunter x Hunter; we don’t know that for sure but that’s a potential reality caused by the fact that creators like Togashi are pushed to illness because of overworking to the point that they simply can’t work and if they push themselves too far karoshi could occur.
To conclude anime has changed in many ways, in some way heavily for the better but in some ways extremely for the worst. To most parts of anime there is a better and a negative. In terms of the anime that is created there is more anime being created than ever this allows greater gems to be made but then it also allows for the market to be heavily over-saturated and certain genres such Isekai are getting way too much focus upon them. There is a good fanbase surrounding anime but it’s over casted heavily by the bad vocal minority of the fanbase, so this is a change for the worse that keeps getting worse as this minority sadly grows louder. In terms of the accessibility to anime in the west it is getting a lot better but sites like Netflix are throttling this accessibility. Hollywood isn’t helping anime change for the better at all with its tarnishing versions of animes, but the anime inspired cartoons in the west are a great homage to anime. One of the best changes in anime is the great new influx of anime creators that are bringing anime to new heights. But the treatment of the creators behind the scenes is a disgusting plague on anime that is dragging the anime industry into The. Fucking. Dirt.

Expert: You ever wonder what a Martian might think if he happened to land near an emergency room? He’d see an ambulance whizzing in and everybody running out to meet it, tearing the doors open, grabbing up the stretcher, scurrying along with it. ‘Why,’ he’d say, ‘what a helpful planet, what kind and helpful creatures.’ He’d never guess we’re not always that way; that we had to, oh, put aside our natural selves to do it. ‘What a helpful race of beings,’ a Martian would say. Don’t you think so? ― Anne Tyler, The Accidental Tourist, April 2002 Respite. Oregon Coast. Tidepools, grey whales, seals and sea lions, puffins and eagles, riotous rookeries and crashing tides, Milky Way and bioluminescence. One large emotional palette from which to paint new images, and to recharge batteries, reset some clocks, and reflect. Yet, how can a thoughtful person go minutes or hours or days with a blank mind, or into some levitating meditative state without all those deaths by a thousand cuts eating at the conscience? Death by a thousand laws, by a thousand penalties, by a thousand codes/regulations/permits; death by a thousand fines/levies/fees; death by a thousand firings/sackings/diminishments of our collective humanity. Death by a thousand tons of toxins in our community’s air, water, soil, education system, legal framework, urban planning. Death by a thousand seconds of celebrity culture, insane fake news, mauling media, lecherous lawyers, junkyard scientists, medical malpractitioners. Death by a thousand broken treaties, broken laws for the One Percent, broken promises, broken bureaucracies. How can you not wake up, look in the mirror, and be angry? Really angry at the state of the world, at the state of inequities, at the state of billionaires capturing our souls by the gigabytes to the 1,000th power, billionaires foreclosing on our jobs, our schools, our communities, our safety, health, sanity? John Trudell said a lot about that, waking up angry every single day . . . decrying what whites like to think are the great civilizers of the world (themselves) – what whites think western civilization is: The great lie is that it is civilization. It’s not civilized. It has been literally the most blood thirsty brutalizing system ever imposed upon this planet. That is not civilization. That’s the great lie, is that it represents civilization. — John Trudell Think about it: going into tourist space has more curves and dangerous cliffs to negotiate than being in the mix 24/7. The mix, man: fighting for homeless, fighting for the drug addicted, fighting for students, fighting for our people’s health, fighting for clean air, water, soil, money. With each overfed, overpaid/-paying, overly obnoxious and arrogant tourist, with every 30-foot RV with Lexus SUV in-tow, with every Indian Pale Ale microbrewery pitcher consumed and mountain of fried clams gobbled up, well, reflection isn’t just looking at Ursula Minor and Major as the tide goes out and the Dungeness crabs come in. Reflection is seeing the human species as a cancer. Self-centered, violent, believing there is a dung heap for the rest of the scum and a golden city for the vaunted, valued, human. More specifically, here’s sentiments from Susan Sontag, not to be taken lightly: If America is the culmination of Western white civilization, as everyone from the Left to the Right declares, then there must be something terribly wrong with Western white civilization. This is a painful truth; few of us want to go that far. … The truth is that Mozart, Pascal, Boolean algebra, Shakespeare, parliamentary government, baroque churches, Newton, the emancipation of women, Kant, Marx, Balanchine ballets, et al., don’t redeem what this particular civilization has wrought upon the world. The white race is the cancer of human history; it is the white race and it alone—its ideologies and inventions—which eradicates autonomous civilizations wherever it spreads, which has upset the ecological balance of the planet, which now threatens the very existence of life itself. Scheme of things, the scale of the glass half full or glass half empty. The hierarchy of needs, and the implosion of those who have and those who do not. Peter Principle of the most incompetent, the most ethically challenged, the most philistine, the most ignorant, the most self-aggrandizing, the most murderous and sociopathic, rising to the top – in governments, parliaments, boardrooms, corporations, militaries, schools, hospitals . . . et al. A Pacific Coast that was once sane and peopled by Salish Tribes, now one with pink-skinned folks like Gremlins scurrying about to stake out more retail space, more consumer opportunities, more territory yanked from anything left in a fractured “natural world.” Five days of being on the coast, and it was all white people looking for saltwater taffy and goofy expensive humpback whale blown glass monstrosities. Unending kitschy stuff while the Anglo Saxon/Caucasian minds funnel through moving lips to purge out strings of commentary that are insipid, childish, all bundled up in the “where are we going to eat breakfast next and then find a nice seaside table to sip that Pinot while we stay comforted in our great white world?” Not an African-American, Black, Indian, Native American in sight. The smartest things in the air out here along the Oregon Coast are the corvids and thousands upon thousands of sea birds, falcons, bald eagles and osprey. It certainly isn’t the thoughts, words and actions of humanity here, from Newport south all the way to Golden Beach. We are talking about unending caravans of motor homes with full-sized SUVs in tow, the other traffic feeding a crisscross onto summer home beaches, some of them two-month-stay homes, and a lot of real estate for sale, properties moving from one hand to the next and a world of tourists devoid of color. It’s five days, and no Mexican-American families, no African-American families. It’s as if the US of A is that alt right David Duke land of the white Christian. Disconcerting, being out here for a respite for myself and my significant other. Tough jobs both of us manage back in Portland, and the getting away from the woods and rivers where we live and work, to the Oregon Coast is a deserving break. But, again, bizarre, really, the lack of diversity as if the USA, with 335 million citizens, is not about to largely (percentage wise) transform into a country of non-white-Germanic-Anglo people. State of the mind of white Americans tied to their whiteness, their Crypto Christian/Crypto Zionist earth razing and financialization schemes to corner everything we do, see, hope for, dream of, create, think of, believe in, live for, die for, hold dear, propagate as a market, it’s a sickness sent out to all corners of the world through the London School of Economics-Oxford-Yale-Stanford-Yeshiva type of recruiting as slick and effective as any School of the Americas or West Point! Trump is Obama is Clinton is Bush is Andrew Jackson is Nixon is Roosevelt is Washington. Whiteness is the key to civilization, even with our one outwardly mixed-race CEO. He excels as a man of white civilizers holding the key to final subjugation. Obama, who is like a Stepford Son! But let’s pause on the sheer demographics and exponentiality of the globe’s racial make-up coming onto the 8 or 9 billion mark: One demographer, who didn’t want to be named for fear of being called racist, said: ‘It’s a matter of pure arithmetic that, if nothing else happens, non-Europeans will become a majority and whites a minority in the UK. That would probably be the first time an indigenous population has voluntarily become a minority in its historic homeland.’ Lee Jasper, race relations adviser to the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, predicted a similar future, telling The Observer : ‘Where America goes, Europe follows 30 years later. There is a potential for whites to become a minority in some European countries.’ In Europe, with its 40,000-year-old indigenous white population, the rise of a non-white majority may not be greeted with such equanimity. In the United Kingdom, the number of people from ethnic minorities has risen from a few tens of thousands in 1950 to more than 3 million now. •In Italy, the birth rate is so low that, without immigration, the population is predicted to decline by 16 million by 2050. •The United States government predicts that non-hispanic whites will become a minority in the country by 2055. •The United Nations predicts that 98 per cent of world population growth until 2025 will be in developing nations. •The population of Europe is expected to drop from 25 per cent of the world total in 1900 to 7 per cent in the next 50 years. — Anthony Browne, The Last Days of a White World, Guardian, September 3, 2000. No matter how quickly the demographics shift in the US of A, correcting and redressing the past biggest injustices of Native American genocide by the white economists, bankers, clerics, militaries, serfs into this country will never happen. First Nations aboriginal peoples used to have this land to themselves. But now, less than one percent of the population they teeter on complete historical banishment, as the largest growth groups are among Latinos (largely derived from Spain), and Asians, (largely from China and the Philippines). This state of the world a la Oregon Coast is a state of people not able to get under the skin of how messed up the country is, has been and is continually going. No large conversations about those things, even the ones who adore and lust after Trump, they just move along in a world of retail relationships, one where the food is talked about while eating it, where the weather is detailed beyond absurdity, and where no serious talk about our collective and individual pain ever unfolds. Whites are lobotomized by debt, depression, deceit, emasculation, Hollywood, F-U Book, the Billionaire Mile High Club of Data Dealers, overeating/under-nutrition, delusions, and dreams of a UFO End Times or New Times. I attempt to gauge how illiterate folks are along the coast, looking at stuff in museums, people trying to understand the scheme of 70 percent of the globe’s surface (oceans) on all life, and their attempts at trying to understand the clouds above and the winds below. The corporations-TV-jefes have done a very good job, alongside the schools, media, ignorant politicians, and celebrities, AND scientists, of denuding the western mind of anything real or pressing, anything resembling a solution to the unfolding ills of climate warming, oceans rising, resources dwindling, bodies toxifying, communities eroding. This vast Pacific Coast is, of course, under the gun as acidification of the waters around Oregon is ramping up due to all sorts of upwellings, smokestack-tailpipe spewings. Species are collapsing. More people are moving into the tsunami belt here, and more woods/forests are being clear cut. More cars, more CO2 pushed out of internal combustion machines and burning of other fossil fuels all the way up the Industrial Age chain our factory technology 12,000 miles away from Depoe Bay. This is a big thing, ocean acidification, and the Oregon Coast is sort of the testing ground for the rest of the world tied to this double-headed monster – climate changing (warming) and ocean acidification. The Surfrider Foundation is working hard on this project to understand how Oregon’s coast will be affected by lower PH levels. Take a look at this amazing web site and organization, a coalescing of forces that very few tourists and locals alike know even little about. Here, the news not fit to broadcast or turn into a Netflix drama (sic): Canary in the Coal Mine Whiskey Creek Hatchery became the ‘Canary in the Coalmine’ for Oregon’s shellfish industry in 2007 when their oyster larvae experienced a massive die off. Scientists determined that the lower pH of the seawater they were pumping in from Netarts Bay was preventing the larvae from growing their shells. On a map of Oregon, find the coastal town of Newport. Draw a straight line directly west, perfectly perpendicular to the coast, out into the mighty Pacific 200 nautical miles from the blinking beacon of the Yaquina Head lighthouse. You’ve just sketched the Newport Hydrographic Line. Nearly everything we know about the function of Oregon’s coastal ocean ecosystem has been learned from samples collected at these stations between 1961 and … well, last week. The technology used along the Newport Line has evolved with the times. Since 2006, autonomous underwater gliders (the first two were named “Bob” and “Jane” after Bob Smith and Jane Huyer) have been patrolling it 24/7. At this very moment, two gliders resembling small yellow missiles are swimming their lonely way, diving and surfacing in an undulating path, collecting data on temperature, salinity, water clarity, ocean currents and more. These remarkable instruments transmit about 10 percent of their data as they “fly,” communicating via satellite when they surface. When a battery gets low, the glider surfaces and calls home. Scientists retrieve it from a boat, switch the battery out for a fully charged replacement, download the full data set and release it. The gliders can be monitored and even controlled via a smart phone app. Initially, studies along the Newport Line focused on physics — currents, temperatures and winds — in order to understand and characterize the most important oceanographic phenomenon in the region: wind-driven coastal upwelling. This process underlies nearly everything else that happens in Oregon’s ocean, from the flourishing fisheries to the presence of gray whales to the low-oxygen conditions and ocean acidification that have been in the news in recent years. In a nutshell, summer winds blowing from the north push surface water to the west and drive the conveyor belt of deep, cold, nutrient-rich waters into the coastal zone, fueling the Northwest’s food webs. Sometimes called “climate change’s evil twin,” a phrase coined by Oregon State’s Jane Lubchenco, ocean acidification is an insidious and unseen effect of rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere. The oceans have always absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere, but as levels of the greenhouse gas have climbed, primarily the result of fossil fuel burning, the oceans have taken in ever-higher amounts, leading to shifts in ocean chemistry. Organisms from oysters to corals are considered sensitive. Over the past 200 years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, average ocean-wide pH has dropped from 8.2 to 8.1. That may not sound like much, but on the pH scale, it amounts to a nearly 30 percent increase in acidity. Other researchers have found that highly acidified water can cause calcium shells made or used by many marine creatures to be harder to build or to dissolve. The net effects may be felt up and down the food chain. Animals in the intertidal and near-shore zones, including economically important species such as oysters and crabs, may be at risk. ‘The ocean may look the same, but the water is changing, especially on the Oregon coast,’ says Chan. Here’s why the Oregon coast is particularly vulnerable to acidification and thus an important place to study ocean chemistry. A Deep-Ocean Conveyor Belt The summer sun can warm your face, and the air can feel hot, but if you’ve ever been swimming along the Oregon coast, you know how cold the water can get. It gets especially chilly when north winds blow and push warmer surface water to the west. In its place, currents from deep in the ocean rise along our beaches and bays to replace it. This water — delivered by a process that scientists call upwelling — isn’t just colder; it also carries more nutrients that can fuel ocean life. On the downside, it has less oxygen and tends to be acidified. Like the proverbial slow boat to China, it can take decades for deep ocean currents to travel to the West Coast. When it last touched the atmosphere at the start of its journey, CO2 levels were lower than they are today. In the future, the water upwelling along our coast will carry the memory of the annual increases in CO2. Okay, so I cut and paste a lot here, but again, what are those crab cake bakes and flounder fries really about here along Oregon’s coastal water, which mostly originates in the North Pacific off Japan? Answer: Two cold, deep-water currents, one of which takes a decade to reach Oregon, while the second current brings those waters to the Oregon coast in about 50 years as it follows amazingly serpentine routes around the globe. Now, here’s the physics and chemistry we don’t talk about when eating our dill-infused, olive tampenade-drenched salmon — cold water holds higher concentrations of CO2 than warmer water, so these circuitous currents start off with increased CO2 levels. Then while making their slow flow toward the U.S. West Coast, the biological activity by organisms living in that water layer — zooplankton, phytoplankton and other microorganisms — constantly generates CO2 until, by the time the ocean conveyor belt of water rises to the surface off the Oregon coast, its CO2 level has increased greatly. Then, as the water is exposed to our atmosphere after decades in the depths of the mother ocean, even more of the greenhouse gas gets absorbed. This is something most Americans can’t-won’t-don’t grasp – chemical changes caused by engines of biomechanics of currents, air, and pollution. Okay-okay, not all tourists get into this level of science and deeper looks at how messed up the world is because of the Corporate Line and Power (One Percent) and the Collective Delusion of their Compliant Consumers (us). But truly, how can people in 2018 NOT go through the thought process of considering each and every bite we take, each mile we drive, each foot of earth we walk onto, each inch of clothing we buy, every trinket and every product we consume as part of the big picture? That little oyster stand in Newport has its intended and unintended consequences already built in, all that embedded energy to get to the oysters (metal in the ships harvested in mines/smelted/galvanized; then fossil fuel dug up and piped in to propel those ships to sea); to harvest the bivalves, then to haul them back, and next to process, package and ship them out, and, finally, to attract people from all parts of the West Coast to consume them. Yes, our own trip to get there and each nibble we make with the squeeze of a lemon, well, the footprint of Homo Sapiens-Consumo-Retailpithecus is dramatic. We are talking about those shellfish, now vulnerable to ocean acidification, all that fossil fuel to propel humans to the parking lot and propel foreign made utensils and plates and equipment to the little archetypal oyster shack, in Oregon, well, consequences are being laid out as I write this on the Cloud. In a world where everything is a retail transaction, where no thought of how the stuff we stuff into our mouths got from farm to fork is expended, it’s no surprise we are cooked intellectually and as communities of me-myself-and-I cancers. Then, more onion peel pulled back: who are these owners of these small businesses in these small towns on the Oregon Coast? Do they care about the world, or their little zone, little hamlets or beach towns? Do they care about the rampant poverty, the growth of shaky families aging in place, in the death spiral of education and decent ways to be, to be human, in small style, while living in a world of entertaining ourselves to death and make-believe idealism and ideals tied to the rich and the famous or notorious? Do they care Portland is filled with houseless people, homeless veterans, youth living on couches under an average of $80K in college debt, people like me working our tails off for the underpay the non-profit world of social services spreads like disease across the land? And that’s not just Portland, but Every Town USA. Do they care about fence line communities in Houston or the lead in water in Flint or the lack of electricity in Puerto Rico six months after a hurricane? Do they care about words having universal meaning, or the poetry in being versus consuming, or the truths of human kind, or the lessons in evolving history, or the potentiality of real revolution, or the bigger power of changing him-or-her-self into a giver, no longer a taker, or being part of the smaller and bigger solution, while still grappling with their privilege, and then finally seeing the future of seven generations out being more important now than ever before? “What both administrations fail to realize is that the West is already at war, whether it wants to be or not. It may not be a war we recognize, but it is a war. This war seeks, at home and abroad, to erode our values, our democracy, and our institutional strength; to dilute our ability to sort fact from fiction, or moral right from wrong; and to convince us to make decisions against our own best interests.
The world order we know is already over, and Russia is moving fast to grab the advantage. Can Trump figure out the new war in time to win it?
A little over a year ago, on a pleasant late fall evening, I was sitting on my front porch with a friend best described as a Ukrainian freedom fighter. He was smoking a cigarette while we watched Southeast DC hipsters bustle by and talked about ‘the war’ — the big war, being waged by Russia against all of us, which from this porch felt very far away. I can’t remember what prompted it — some discussion of whether the government in Kyiv was doing something that would piss off the EU — but he took a long drag off his cigarette and said, offhand: “Russia. The EU. It’s all just more Molotov-Ribbentrop shit.”
His casual reference to the Hitler-Stalin pact dividing Eastern Europe before WWII was meant as a reminder that Ukraine must decide its future for itself, rather than let it be negotiated between great powers. But it haunted me, this idea that modern revolutionaries no longer felt some special affinity with the West. Was it the belief in collective defense that was weakening, or the underlying certitude that Western values would prevail?
Story Continued Below
Months later, on a different porch thousands of miles away, an Estonian filmmaker casually explained to me that he was buying a boat to get his family out when the Russians came, so he could focus on the resistance. In between were a hundred other exchanges — with Balts and Ukrainians, Georgians and Moldovans — that answered my question and exposed the new reality on the Russian frontier: the belief that, ultimately, everyone would be left to fend for themselves. Increasingly, people in Russia’s sphere of influence were deciding that the values that were supposed to bind the West together could no longer hold. That the world order Americans depend on had already come apart.
From Moscow, Vladimir Putin has seized the momentum of this unraveling, exacting critical damage to the underpinnings of the liberal world order in a shockingly short time. As he builds a new system to replace the one we know, attempts by America and its allies to repair the damage have been limited and slow. Even this week, as Barack Obama tries to confront Russia’s open and unprecedented interference in our political process, the outgoing White House is so far responding to 21st century hybrid information warfare with last century’s diplomatic toolkit: the expulsion of spies, targeted sanctions, potential asset seizure. The incoming administration, while promising a new approach, has betrayed a similar lack of vision. Their promised attempt at another “reset” with Russia is a rehash of a policy that has utterly failed the past two American administrations.
What both administrations fail to realize is that the West is already at war, whether it wants to be or not. It may not be a war we recognize, but it is a war. This war seeks, at home and abroad, to erode our values, our democracy, and our institutional strength; to dilute our ability to sort fact from fiction, or moral right from wrong; and to convince us to make decisions against our own best interests.
Those on the Russian frontier, like my friends from Ukraine and Estonia, have already seen the Kremlin’s new toolkit at work. The most visible example may be “green men,” the unlabeled Russian-backed forces that suddenly popped up to seize the Crimean peninsula and occupy eastern Ukraine. But the wider battle is more subtle, a war of subversion rather than domination. The recent interference in the American elections means that these shadow tactics have now been deployed – with surprising effectiveness – not just against American allies, but against America itself. And the only way forward for America and the West is to embrace the spirit of the age that Putin has created, plow through the chaos, and focus on building what comes next.
President-elect Trump has characteristics that can aid him in defining what comes next. He is, first and foremost, a rule-breaker, not quantifiable by metrics we know. In a time of inconceivable change, that can be an incredible asset. He comes across as a straight talker, and he can be blunt with the American people about the threats we face. He is a man of many narratives, and can find a way to sell these decisions to the American people. He believes in strength, and knows hard power is necessary.
So far, Trump seems far more likely than any of his predecessors to accelerate, rather than resist, the unwinding of the postwar order. And that could be a very bad — or an unexpectedly good — thing. So far, he has chosen to act as if the West no longer matters, seemingly blind to the danger that Putin’s Russia presents to American security and American society. The question ahead of us is whether Trump will aid the Kremlin’s goals with his anti-globalist, anti-NATO rhetoric– or whether he’ll clearly see the end of the old order, grasp the nature of the war we are in, and have the vision and the confrontational spirit to win it.
***
To understand the shift underway in the world, and to stop being outmaneuvered, we first need to see the Russian state for what it really is. Twenty-five years ago, the Soviet Union collapsed. This freed the Russian security state from its last constraints. In 1991, there were around 800,000 official KGB agents in Russia. They spent a decade reorganizing themselves into the newly-minted FSB, expanding and absorbing other instruments of power, including criminal networks, other security services, economic interests, and parts of the political elite. They rejected the liberal, democratic Russia that President Boris Yeltsin was trying to build.
Following the 1999 Moscow apartment bombings that the FSB almost certainly planned, former FSB director Vladimir Putin was installed as President. We should not ignore the significance of these events. An internal operation planned by the security services killed hundreds of Russian citizens. It was used as the pretext to re-launch a bloody, devastating internal war led by emergent strongman Putin. Tens of thousands of Chechen civilians and fighters and Russian conscripts died. The narrative was controlled to make the enemy clear and Putin victorious. This information environment forced a specific political objective: Yeltsin resigned and handed power to Putin on New Year’s Eve 1999.
From beginning to end, the operation took three months. This is how the Russian security state shook off the controls of political councils or representative democracy. This is how it thinks and how it acts — then, and now. Blood or war might be required, but controlling information and the national response to that information is what matters. Many Russians, scarred by the unrelenting economic, social, and security hardship of the 1990s, welcomed the rise of the security state, and still widely support it, even as it has hollowed out the Russian economy and civic institutions. Today, as a result, Russia is little more than a ghastly hybrid of an overblown police state and a criminal network with an economy the size of Italy — and the world’s largest nuclear arsenal.
Even Russian policy hands, raised on the Western understanding of traditional power dynamics, find the implications of this hard to understand. This Russia does not aspire to be like us, or to make itself stronger than we are. Rather, its leaders want the West—and specifically NATO and America — to become weaker and more fractured until we are as broken as they perceive themselves to be. No reset can be successful, regardless the personality driving it, because Putin’s Russia requires the United States of America as its enemy.
We can only confront this by fully understanding how the Kremlin sees the world. Its worldview and objectives are made abundantly clear in speeches, op-eds, official policy and national strategy documents, journal articles, interviews, and, in some cases, fiction writing of Russian officials and ideologues. We should understand several things from this material.
First, it is a war. A thing to be won, decisively — not a thing to be negotiated or bargained. It’s all one war: Ukraine, Turkey, Syria, the Baltics, Georgia. It’s what Vladislav Surkov, Putin’s ‘grey cardinal’ and lead propagandist, dubbed ”non-linear war” in his science fiction story “Without Sky,” in 2014.
Second, it’s all one war machine. Military, technological, information, diplomatic, economic, cultural, criminal, and other tools are all controlled by the state and deployed toward one set of strategic objectives. This is the Gerasimov doctrine, penned by Valery Gerasimov, the Russian Chief of the General Staff, in 2013. Political warfare is meant to achieve specific political outcomes favorable to the Kremlin: it is preferred to physical conflict because it is cheap and easy. The Kremlin has many notches in its belt in this category, some of which have been attributed, many likely not. It’s a mistake to see this campaign in the traditional terms of political alliances: rarely has the goal been to install overtly pro-Russian governments. Far more often, the goal is simply to replace Western-style democratic regimes with illiberal, populist, or nationalist ones.
Third, information warfare is not about creating an alternate truth, but eroding our basic ability to distinguish truth at all. It is not “propaganda” as we’ve come to think of it, but the less obvious techniques known in Russia as “active measures” and “reflexive control”. Both are designed to make us, the targets, act against our own best interests.
Fourth, the diplomatic side of this non-linear war isn’t a foreign policy aimed at building a new pro-Russian bloc, Instead, it’s what the Kremlin calls a “multi-vector” foreign policy, undermining the strength of Western institutions by coalescing alternate — ideally temporary and limited — centers of power. Rather than a stable world order undergirded by the U.S. and its allies, the goal is an unstable new world order of “all against all.” The Kremlin has tried to accelerate this process by both inflaming crises that overwhelm the Western response (for example, the migration crisis in Europe, and the war in eastern Ukraine) and by showing superiority in ‘solving’ crises the West could not (for example, bombing Syria into submission, regardless of the cost, to show Russia can impose stability in the Middle East when the West cannot).”
Solid commentary.
