Moderately Interesting Japanese Ep. 8 Hokkaido Dialect

The typical winter scenery of Hokkaido.

One of my favorite aspects of language learning is studying dialects. I am fascinated by how language branches and adapts to new environments like some form of linguistic natural selection. Japanese is rife with interesting dialects, some of which are so different from the standard that they can sound like a totally different language to the untrained ear. I thought I’d make a series of posts highlighting different dialects in Japanese. Since this sort of post will take a bit more research on my end and I plan to find native speakers of the dialect to confirm with, they won’t be very regular, but I hope that you enjoy them!

What are some of the main Japanese dialects?

Firstly, let me tell you how to say “dialect” in Japanese, because I know I’m gonna use it and I don’t want to cause any confusion.

方言 (hougen) Dialect

___弁 (__-ben) __ Dialect, so “Osaka Dialect” is “Osaka-ben.”

I daresay that just about 100% of all Japanese learners are familiar with Tokyo-ben, because it is Standard Japanese. The next most popular dialect is Kansai-ben, which is spoken in the Kansai region (Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.). The Kansai Dialect can be broken down into several smaller, regional dialects. Next would probably be Okinawa-ben.

(Caution! Some people, particularly Okinawans, consider Okinawan Japanese to be a language independent from Japanese, and they can be offended if you refer to it as a dialect. Japan’s official stance is that Okinawan is a dialect, though, so I am calling it a dialect in my posts.)

Now without further ado, let’s actually start learning about one of these dialects!

Hokkaido-ben, namara ii!

Hokkaido is the island in green. It’s the biggest prefecture in Japan by far.

I am a foreigner and Japanese is not my native language, but I have been living on the island of Hokkaido for 5 years now and am very comfortable with the Hokkaido dialect, so I chose to introduce it to you first. Also, it’s not one that gets talked about a lot, so I figured maybe there weren’t many posts about it.

Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan, and it wasn’t settled and officially incorporated as part of Japan until the late 1800��s. There is a group of indigenous people here called the Ainu who speak a language completely different from Japanese, but their language has not bled into Hokkaido-ben. (Many place names in Hokkaido are from Ainu, though).

Because Hokkaido was settled so late in history compared to the other islands of Japan, their dialect doesn’t differ drastically from Tokyo-ben. There are some minor intonation differences that, frankly, I don’t feel confident explaining. I have internalized the intonations through exposure, but I’ve never been taught it and don’t really know what is correct. So I’m not going to talk about tonal differences, and instead focus on the different words and a wee bit of grammar.

投げる　Nageru

Standard Japanese: 捨てる suteru

English: to dispose of (lit. “to throw/toss”)

To an English speaker, “throw away” feels just as natural as “dispose of.” But to people outside of Hokkaido, it sounds very unusual and the image it conjures is comedic, like someone is hurling trash into the garbage can like it’s the opening pitch at the World Series.

Example: そこの古い新聞を投げていいよ。 Romaji: Soko no furui shinbun wo nagete ii yo.

Standard: そこの古い新聞を捨てていいよ。 Romaji: Soko no furui shinbun wo sutete ii yo.

English: You can throw away those old newspapers there.

おっかない　Okkanai

Standard: 危ない abunai

English: dangerous, scary, a “close call”

My hostmom uses this with me, like, all the time. According to her, I’m always doing okkanai things, like walking alone at night or *gasp* going outside with wet hair. I love her so much haha.

Example: うちの子が熊のぬいぐるみだと思って遊んでいたのは本当の子グマだった。おっかなかったわ！ Romaji: Uchi no ko ga kuma no nuigurumi da to omotte asonde ita noha hontou no koguma datta. Okkanakatta wa!

Standard: うちの子が熊のぬいぐるみだと思って遊んでいたのは本当の子グマだった。危なかったわ！ Romaji: Uchi no ko ga kuma no nuigurumi da to omotte asonde ita noha hontou no koguma datta. Abunakatta wa!

English: Our kid thought he was playing with a teddy bear, but it was actually a live bear cub. What a close call!

（手袋を）履く　(Tebukuro wo) haku

Standard:（手袋を）はめる (tebukuro wo) hameru

English: to put on (gloves)

Winter in Hokkaido is long and cold. Gloves are one of the most essential articles of clothing here, and I have heard/used “haku” so much that “hameru” sounds incorrect to me. The “haku” sounds funny to other Japanese people because it is used for putting on socks, underwear, and pants, and they will imagine you putting socks or panties on your hands instead of gloves.

Example: 外は寒いから、手袋を履きなさい。 Romaji: Soto ha samui kara, tebukuro wo hakinasai.

Standard: 外は寒いから、手袋をはめなさい。 Romaji: Soto ha samui kara, tebukuro wo hamenasai.

English: It’s cold out, so put on your gloves.

めんこい　Menkoi

Standard Japanese: 可愛い kawaii

English: cute

I included this because it’s one of the famous aspects of Hokkaido-ben, but I actually don’t hear it used that much. I tend to see it on souvenir shirts for tourists more than in actual conversations.

Example: この子猫はめっちゃめんこい！ Romaji: Kono koneko ha meccha menkoi!

Standard: この子猫はめっちゃかわいい！ Romaji: Kono koneko ha meccha kawaii!

English: This kitten is super cute!

Note: Even though it is functioning as an adjective and ends with an “i,” it is not an “i” adjective. It is a “na” adjective.

あずましくない　Azumashikunai

Standard: 居心地が悪い、嫌 igokochi ga warui, iya

English: uncomfortable (surroundings), unpleasant

This is a word that many Hokkaido people use but struggle to explain. Azumashikunai describes any place that you find unpleasant or uncomfortable, maybe due to it being too crowded, or too empty, or because it’s very cramped, for example.

Example: 日曜日の札幌駅が人混みであずましくない。 Romaji. Nichiyoubi no Sapporo-eki ga hitogomi de azumashikunai.

Standard: 日曜日の札幌駅が人混みで嫌だ。 Romaji: Nichiyoubi no Sapporo-eki ga hitogomi de iya da.

English: Sapporo Station is always crowded on Sundays and I don’t like it.

いずい　Izui

Standard: none

English: different (in a bad way), off-kilter, something is “off”

Hokkaido people really struggle to explain izui because Standard Japanese doesn’t have an equivalent for it, but I think it can be likened to “off” in English. You got something in your eye but can’t find it and your eye feels funny? Your eye is izui. You have a hair in your shirt and can’t find it? That feels izui. Sometimes it can be a mysterious ache not painful enough to warrant a visit to the doctor, or sometimes it can just be a sense that something is “off.”

Example: 目にゴミが入って、いずい。 Romaji: Me ni gomi ga haitte, izui.

Standard:目にゴミが入って、痛い。 Romaji: Me ni gomi ga haitte, itai.

English: Something got in my eye and now it feels off.

汽車　Kisha

Standard: 電車 densha

English: (train, lit. “steam engine”)

The first time I came to Japan, I could just barely hold down an everyday conversation in Japanese. My hostparents (hostdad especially) both spoke very strong Hokkaido-ben, and during my first meal with them my hostdad asked if I had traveled from the airport to their city by “steam engine,” and I was just baffled. Wait, did he just say locomotive? What year is it? Are steam engines still a thing in Japan?! Then my kind hostmother explained that he meant regular, modern trains.

Example: すみません、函館ゆきの汽車はいつ出発しますか？ Romaji: Sumimasen, Hakodate-yuki no kisha ha itsu shuppatsu shimasu ka?

Standard: すみません、函館ゆきの電車はいつ出発しますか？ Romaji: Sumimsaen, Hakodate-yuki no densha ha itsu shuppatsu shimasuka?

English: Excuse me, when does the train bound for Hakodate leave the station?

しゃっこい　Shakkoi

Standard: 冷たい Tsumetai

English: Cold

Being the northernmost prefecture and next door to Russia, it’s only natural that Hokkaido-ben have its own word for “cold.”

Example: このかき氷ってめっちゃしゃっこい！ Romaji; Kono kakigoori tte meccha shakkoi!

Standard: このかき氷ってめっちゃ冷たい！ Romaji: Kono kakigoori tte meccha tsumetai!

English: This shaved ice is super cold!

とうきび　Toukibi

Standard: とうもろこし Toumorokoshi

English: corn

Hokkaido is famous for their sweet corn, and “toukibi” is a word you will hear a lot here as a result. A popular summer snack is corn on the cob with soy sauce and butter, and it’s made just like in the gif above! Japanese people tend to eat it using a toothpick, picking off kernel by kernel. So when I just rocked up, grabbed an ear and started going to town on it, they thought I was a barbarian hahaha.

Example: やっぱり、とうきびに醤油だね！ Romaji: Yappari, toukibi ni shouyu da ne!

Standard: やっぱり、とうもろこしに醤油だね！ Romaji: Yappri, toumorokoshi ni shouyu da ne!

English: Soy sauce really does go good with corn!

なまら　Namara

Standard: とても totemo、結構 kekkou

English: very, super, rather

This word is like “menkoi,” in that it is famous throughout Japan for being Hokkaido-ben, but I rarely hear it in actual conversations. I hear people use it when they are surprised by something. “Namara oishii” has a nuance of “It’s (actually) very tasty.”

Example: 曇ってるけど、今日の天気はなまらいい。 Romaji: Kumotteru kedo, kyou no tenki ha namara ii.

Standard: 曇ってるけど、今日の天気はけっこういい。 Romaji: Kumotteru kedo, kyou no tenki ha kekkou ii.

English: It’s cloudy today, but it’s still pretty good weather.

なんぼ？　Nanbo?

Standard: いくら？ Ikura?

English: How much?

My friend asked me to go get a couple drinks from the convenience store. I came back with a bottle for her and for me and she asked, “Nanbo datta?” I thought that bo was maybe a counter for things, and desperately tried to figure out what we were supposed to be counting. Then she explained that, for whatever reason, “nanbo” means “how much (does something cost)?”

Example: そのお弁当はめっちゃ美味しそう！なんぼだった？ Romaji: Sono obentou ha meccha oishisou! Nanbo datta?

Standard: そのお弁当はめっちゃ美味しそう！いくらだった？ Romaji: Sono obentou ha meccha oishisou! Ikura datta?

English: That bento looks super good! How much was it?

ボケる　Bokeru (for produce)

Standard: 腐る kusaru

English: go bad (produce)

In standard Japanese, “bokeru” means “to go senile” or “to develop dementia/Alzheimer's.” While I wouldn’t say it’s a slur bad enough that it would be bleeped out, it certainly isn’t a kind way to refer to aging.

So when my host mom told me, “I would give you some apples, but they’re all senile” I had no clue what she was going on about. But then she showed them to me, and they were all wrinkled like this:

Not exactly the most appetizing, but also not entirely rotten. I’m really not sure why Hokkaido-ben likens produce to senility, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s because pretty much every single person with Alzheimer’s/dementia is wrinkled.

Example: このリンゴはボケてるから、パイでも作ろうか… Romaji: Kono ringo ha boketeru kara, pai demo tsukurou ka...

Standard: このリンゴは腐りかけてるから、パイでも作ろうか… Romaji: Kono ringo ha kusarikaketeru kara, pai demo tsukurou ka...

English: These apples are about to go bad, so I guess I’ll make a pie...

～べ　~be

Standard ～だろう、～でしょう darou, deshou

English: ..., right?

This is probably the most famous aspect of Hokkaido-ben. Japanese people get a real kick out of it when this white girl uses it haha. “~be” is a sentence-ending particle that functions about the same as “darou” or “deshou” in that it:

asserts the speaker’s confidence in the likelihood of something

asks for the listener’s confirmation

This sentence-final particle has its roots in the particle ～べし (~beshi) found in Classical Japanese, which had a similar purpose. Other forms of ~beshi survive in Modern Standard Japanese with the words べき (beki) and すべく (subeku).

Here are two examples, one for each function ~be fulfills.

Example 1: 君の飛行機はあと5分に出発するって？間に合わないべ！ Romaji: Kimi no hikouki ha ato 5 fun ni shuppatsu suru tte? Maniawanai be!

Standard: 君の飛行機はあと5分に出発するって？間に合わないでしょう！ Romaji: Kimi no hikouki ha ato 5 fun ni shuppatsu suru tte? Maniawanai deshou!

English: You said your plane takes off in 5 minutes? There’s no way you’ll make it!

Example 2: このサラダに白菜も入ってたべ？ Romaji: Kono sarada ni hakusai mo haitteta be?

Standard: このサラダに白菜も入ってたでしょう？ Romaji: Kono sarada ni hakusai mo haitteta deshou?

Standard: There was napa cabbage in this salad too, wasn’t there?

～れ　~re

Standard: ～なさい ~nasai

English: imperative command

I really don’t like giving grammar explanations because it’s been a long time since I’ve formally studied Japanese grammar and I’m scared of explaining something poorly or incorrectly. But an upper-elementary level Japanese learner should know that there are many different levels of imperatives in Japanese that vary in politeness. In order of rude to polite, we have:

Imperatives that end in an “e” sound or ろ, as in:

死ね！Shine! Die!

待て！Mate! Wait!

食べろ！Tabero! Eat!

Imperatives that end in tte, te, or de and are not followed by kudasai

死んで Shinde. Die.

待って Matte. Wait.

食べて Tabete. Tabete.

Imperatives that end in nasai. (These are most often used by parents/teachers to their children.)

死になさい Shininasai. Die.

待ちなさい Machinasai. Wait.

食べなさい Tabenasai. Eat.

Imperatives that end in tte, te, or de and have kudasai after them.

And then there’s super formal Japanese, but that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

Anyways. Back to the Hokkaido-ben. I went to a picnic here with a Japanese friend’s family, and her aunt gave me a plate of food and said, “Tabere!” I knew that this had to be an imperative, but I had never studied it before. It felt like it was the same as the rudest imperative, and I spent the whole rest of the picnic wondering what on earth I had done to have her family speak to me like that. Conventionally, they should have been using the -tte form or -nasai form with me.

After the party, I asked her, “Dude, what’s the ~re stuff for? Do they not like me?” I was close to tears I was so hurt and confused.

And that when she laughed and explained that the ~re is a facet of Hokkaido-ben, and it is the same in politeness and nuance as the ~nasai imperative used by parents and teachers to their children.

So I had spent several hours thinking that her family hated me, when really they were treating me like I was their own child!

Example: ちゃんと野菜を食べれ！ Romaji: Chanto yasai wo tabere!

Standard: ちゃんと野菜を食べなさい！ Romaji: Chanto yasai wo tabenasai!

English: Eat all of your vegetables properly.

This was a monster of a post. There are actually a few more words I wanted to introduce, but I had to cut it off at some point haha. hey remember that time a couple of weeks ago when i translated some bnha leaks

because i found some today from @trashformha and i’m going to Make Another Attempt

edited bc i messed up one bit!!! i mean, i’ve messed up many, but still

so, basically, they’re all fucked. there’s a threat too big, even for all of these heroes.

bubble 1: nani teki wa hitori! kore wo uteneba

i don’t really get the first bit, because i’m nowhere near fluent. “nani” is, as we all know “what?” and “teki” is “opponent”

therefore i’m thinking it’s basically “which opponents are alone,” or something along those lines, for now

there’s a familiar “u” for “utsu,” in “uteneba,” and “ute” is an imperative of that. “ba” is kind of an “if, and” particle, i think. before i get a headache, i’m just going to try and summarise that bubble, like. fuck it i’m making logic bounces. “the opponent is alone! attack that way”

bubble 2: nanno tame no HERO houwajidai ka

“nanno” is, like, “what kind,” and “tame” is, as usual, basically “sake.” the “no” makes that possessive, too

you’re not gonna believe what “hero” means

whenever i look up “houwajidai,” it. OH. this is basically “what good is the age of the saturation of heroes!”

“a single opponent attacking this way! what use is this age of hero saturation?”

oh, cool!!! we’ve got rock lock, aizawa, and manual? Dad Squad!!!!!!!!!

bubble 1: “masshou” wa kaijyou shite nai...!

“masshou” is “erasure” so that’s pretty simple. “kaijyou” is “cancelling,” though jfc it’s so hard to make out the kanji that i had to use waifu2x, which made it worse, bc it’s not designed for words. and, “shite nai,” that’s just the te-form of “suru” with a negative attached, which basically means “being unable to”

so! “erasure isn’t working...!”

bubble 2: kanpeki na ... noumu tte wake ka...!

“kanpeki na,” is just adjectiving “perfect” for the noun, which is “noumu.” so, like, “the perfect noumu”

“tte,” is like “to say; as for,” you know, like all that. “wake” is like, a reasonable conclusion, or just “circumstances,” which is really kind of vague, dude

“my “erasure” isn’t working...! the perfect... noumu is...!”

i can conclude that, while aizawa can erase every quirk that belongs to a normal noumu (when he’s aware that he has to erase more than one quirk; he could not do so in the initial usj encounter until he’d been told that the noumu had multiple quirks), he cannot erase the quirks of a high-end noumu

we saw earlier in this arc, even, when it was still a hospital raid, that the narrative didn’t let aizawa use his quirk on them before

here’s the long-awaited Gran Slam. he just. slaps izuku and kacchan to the ground

bubble 1: kokora de iika

“kokora” is “hereabout” and “iika” is “listen.” he’s saying “listen here.” unless it’s “ii ka,” in which case, he’s saying “is here fine?”

bubble 2: ima shita ni aizawa-sensei ga!!

i don’t need to note this out at all. “aizawa-sensei’s down there now!!”

bubble 3: aa, shigaraki no “kosei” wo fuujitoru

the first bit is, “ah, shigaraki’s quirk” but “quirk” is in quotation marks, because that’s how it’s indicated in japanese, i guess, while we capitalise it to indicate that It’s A Special Thing; Not The Normal Word

“fuujiru” is a verb that means, like, “seal” or “block.” this is unlike “azarashi,” which is a Good Seal. you know, a selkie friend

i’d hazard that this is, like, “ah, shigaraki’s quirk is blocking everything”

bubble 4: shii-san motto hanareta hou ga iidaro!!

“hanareta” is past tense of “hanareru,” which is, “to leave; to get further away; to lose connection,” and “hou” is, in this case, i think, “direction.” “daro” seems like a shortening of “darou,” which is indicating a question, like “don’t you think?”

so, “shii-san’s got even further away, don’t you think!?”

bubble 4: jii-san motto hanareta hou ga ii daro!!

“how the fuck did this old guy get us so far away!!?”

bubble 4.5: “gran torino, kacchan wa...” which is basically “gran torino and kacchan are...” (or “huh...”) he’s introducing his other mentor to his... to his rabid pomeranian

bubble 5: OFA no kyouyuusha jyaro toshinori kara kiitoru

just so you know, the mention of “toshinori” has my brain going “!!! :D !!!”

“kyouyuusha” is “joint owners,” essentially. “jya” is just “da” in regional dialect, making “jyaro” “daro.” “kiku” can be “listen” or “ask” which sucks, but “kara” is “from,” which i know

“didn’t toshinori tell you about joint owners of one for all?” or, “didn’t you ask toshinori about joint holders of one for all?”

bubble 5 but the other half: koko ga gendo jya bakugou

“here,” a particle that indicates a specific subject, “limits,” particle indicating existence, “bakugou”

"here, you are limited, bakugou”

so!!! gran torino dumps them somewhere. he says, “around here should be fine.”

“sensei’s down there, now!” says izuku.

i think it’s kacchan who says he then says, “ugh, shigaraki’s quirk is blocking everything.”

to that, izuku says, “he’s gotten even further away, hasn’t he? gran torino, kacchan, i...”

to that, kacchan says, “how the fuck did that old dude get us so far away!!?”

then, gran torino says, “didn’t you hear from toshinori about joint owners of one for all? here, you’re limited, bakugou.”

and, while izuku tries to introduce kacchan to gran torino, gran torino says, “i’m the co-owner of one for all, basically. didn’t toshinori tell you? you’re limited here, bakugou.”

tbh i initially thought we’d switched to the league, because “shii-san” is. so weird. i could only imagine toga calling him that

oh no. he’s talking about aizawa

bubble 1: washi wa ERASER no ashi ni nari ni modoru

“washi” is just an old man personal pronoun. “ashi” is foot, and, with the particle added, i think it’s “by foot,” as a mode of transportation. “nari ni” is, like, doing things your own way. “modoru” is, in essence “to return”

in this case, i think “wa” is used as a comparison, rather than a topic marker. so, it’s like

“eraser and i both take our own paths.”

bubble 2: kakurete rotte ...... koto desu ka!?

“kakureru” is a verb meaning “to hide,” combined with a bunch of te-forms

“we’re being hidden... is that it?”

bubble 3: yatsu wa ALL FOR ONE no “kosei” wo ijyoku sareta rashii

“yatsu” is just. “him. that guy. blergh.” but “ijyoku,” is. it’s like. it’s “working from your house.” i don’t get it. and “sareru” is the passive form of “suru,” “to do.” so it’s “to be done.” and “rashii” is like. like. ish. seeming

“it’s like all for one’s quirk is working through him”

as in, like, it’s the quirk that’s really doing it, or all for one is puppeteering him from tartarus

little bubble-less text next to gran torino: DJ HERO ga ittotta

“it’s like the dj hero was saying,”

i think so, anyway

bubble 4: man ga ichi ONE FOR ALL ga ubawarete mo shitara...

“man ga ichi,” “if by any chance,” or so the jisho collocation says. it also says “ten-thousand to one,” which is more what i was thinking

“ubawareru,” or, “to steal.” i keep forgetting this, though it’s growing more familiar, and “mo,” is like, “in addition to.” like “inu mo neko mo minna suki” as “i love every one of them; dogs and cats!”

“shitara” seems to be past tense of “suru” and also a supposition, so:

“if there’s a chance, no matter how small, that one for all could be stolen...”

and, subsequently: “saiaku” wo kangaero

and i don’t think i need help translating this. i know “aku” and i know “kangae”

“if there’s any chance that one for all could be stolen, the villains will have won.”

a lot of the kanji and such are blurred, so i’m doing my best, but it’s going to be super vague and not very notey

panel 1 top: “kosei” jya nai...!! su no... chikara...!!?

“it’s not a quirk...!! that power... is his own!!?”

panel 1 bottom 1: ano chouyaku(?) mo sou datta no ka!?

“was that jump also due to it!?”

panel 1 bottom 2: furuu dakede sora suru jiyuu ni - !

i have, like, half a clue with this one, sorry

“by simply wielding it, he’s free in the sky!”

panel 2: sonna chikara... marude

“that power... it’s just like-”

bubble 1: ALL MIGHT ni wa oyobanu teido jya gana!

the bubbles are a lot clearer, so

“oyobanu.” i have no idea. it’s, like, “oyabu” is “to reach; to measure up to,” and “nu” seems to be turning it into a negative, but i have no idea what tense it’s supposed to be.

“teido” is a suffix for a noun as in “degree, amount,” so i think the “nu” nouned the “oyabu”

“gana” is kind of airy with its meaning. is it, like “wouldn’t it be nice if...” or is it making things uncertain, or is it being empathetic? where does the “jya” fit in? is it a “jyaa” or a “da?”

“don’t you think he could reach the impossible standards set by all might?”

bubble 2: karada no kado na kaizou wa nou ni fuka ga kakaru

“kado” - “excessive. “kaizou” - “remodelling; reformatting.” “nou” - “brain.” “fuka” - “burden; strain.” “kakaru” - who the fuck has a clue

“the excessive remodelling of his body allows his brain to handle this burden”

bubble 1: tasukarimasu, MANUAL-san

...yeah. i checked. he’s being so polite and he is breaking my heart

“please save them, manual”

bubble 2: bunryou kajyou ni naru to kaette shimite

“bunryou” - “amount,” “kajyou” - “excess”

“ni naru to” is a bunch of particles and shit, equating to “when it becomes”

“shimete” is, like, “to touch; pierce; sting; permeate; influence; impress”

for now, i think it means something along the lines of “you have a bunch of kids to get back to and influence,” but it’s all dependent on bubble 3

edit: i saw “kae” and thought “ah, kaeru; return!” and it’s not!!! it’s “instead!!!”

bubble 3: me wo tsumutte shimaimasunde... iki awasemashou!

“me wo tsumutte” is just, “close your eyes.”

“shimaimasu” is a polite conjugation of “shimau,” or “to end; complete.”

the “nda” means, funnily enough, “and”

“awasemashou,” i think, means, like, “let’s do it together!”

In Depths Below: Epilogue, Part 3

[ OOC Disclaimer ] | Over the last year HoTN has put together this story ‘In Depths Below’ it began with Lazarius being taken from Kun-Lai Summit, and the chase to get him back from the Hunters hired by Magister Dawnseeker was unveiled. Every member eliminated a certain threat, the Order banded together to orchestrate the take down, and accomplished their mission they’d set out to do. The events here are what happened during. This is Lazarius’ side, where he was; and what he’d done. And just how he and a certain new savior became bonded. Id like to give a tremendous thanks to @zandalaridruidofgonk for the help in putting this together and making it happen. And thank you to everyone who has offered support and kind words over the last year. Without further delay, the conclusion of our 2nd fictional collaboration. In Depths Below. |

[ J ] Jursol listened to his words, his questions about how far she’d go to protect her family, her way of life, her freedom. Many thoughts crossed her mind in those moments. Memories of how she came to care for her raptors. How she was taught magic that others saw as dangerous, or to primitive. How upon returning home to Zandalar she has only suffered at the hands of others.

The magic she used brought the wrong kind of attention from others. Some days she wondered why she even came back. This man was one of the few who seemed to not despise her. He was also something that fascinated her. Especially seeing how he seemed to be healed already after suffering such damage.

Jursol continued to pet the small raptor as she gave a fanged smile before speaking.

“Freedom not be free. It be paired for in blood, death, suffering. It be something I will never give up without a fight. Dis war be something I want nothing to do with. Dis world be suffering. Dis world be afraid of anything it not be understanding.”

Taking a look around at her hut with a slight smile she spoke frankly to him.

“I be doing anything to protect my freedom, my family, my way of life. Even if it be meaning killing.”

As she finished speaking the little raptor leaped off her to run around the hut. It found a place to rest as she moved to prepare to follow the elf into the jungles. Grabbing a few small bags, and; some vials that were empty to collect blood, before moving to the door to leave.

“If you be healed it be time to hunt.” She seemed eager to shed the blood of those they are after.

[ L.K ] “We are very much alike in that respect Miss Jursol.”.

Lazarius would make his way beside her. Taking it upon himself to move from the inside of her cabin to the outer jungles that seemed to scream with life. It was obvious he didn’t seem all too bothered by the sounds and sights of the jungle. Unlike most elves that would have probably found dirt and sweat to be unappealing, he was quite comfortable.

“I will need you to lead the way as I have the navigation skills of a drunken dirt farmer. Especially in these unfamiliar territories.”.

[ J ] As the two walked outside, Jursol noticed the elf seemed very at ease here. She remembered another she met who would swat at every single leaf or insect, and jumped at every sound they did not recognize. Laughing softly at the memory before she took the lead.

“At least you be honest about dis. Most I bet not be wanting to admit any weakness.”

[ L.K ] His voice cracked as he let a small laugh escape his lips. Lazarius was pleased so far, free from those shackles and bindings, free from the grips of his captors. Hopefully the rest of his order was not irrationally starting a war, God’s only knew his twin must have been livid with him missing...again.

As she was permitted to take charge, he relinquished control to her. Staying close but not too close as to crowd her. He was trying to match her stride but he was absolutely no where as skilled at jungle traipsing as she.

“My views and...thoughts have changed over...the years.”.

He said brokenly as he walked behind her, his voice only loud enough for her to hear under the weight of their steps along the brush.

“My life has... been in the service of the ... old ones since I was only ... very young, but now ... I know that I must balance ... carefully on both sides...”.

[ J ] As she lead the way with her white raptor near by, she heard a sound in the brush. A simple wave her hand and the raptor took off after what ever it was. A screech was heard as the sounds of a struggle came from the brush. The loud sound of crunching of bones was the last thing heard, before the raptor returned looking pleased. It’s mouth dripping in the blood of what ever poor animal was there. Jursol listened intently to him as she moved branches such out of his way.

“Old ones? Ah you be meaning Old gods I take it. Mmm, yes as with everything balance must be held. As one once be telling me, da be no darkness without light, no light without darkness. Even da shadows need da light to exist. It be hard to be free here in Zandalar. One must follow certain ways, or be shunned.”

[ L.K ] Lazarius was more thinking out loud than anything, thank the gods they found flat soft ground to walk on finally.

“The people who serve with me, I will do anything to ensure they are free of tyranny, judgement and persecution.”

He thought to himself for a moment then spoke.

“Consider that my debt paid in full Miss Jursol, should you ever need somewhere safe... of these jungles come to claim you and the tribes encroach on your lands...should you need an ally in your darkest hour. The Nine...our Bastille, and my wrath...will be yours to use as you see fit.”

[ J ] A deep sigh escaped her lips as she continued to clear a path. The beach was now close enough to hear the waves crashing on some rocks at the shoreline.

“I tank ya for dat, really. . . I be under attack more den most know. Now more den evah...”

[ L.K ] “ We are family...and I will protect the ones who protect me with my life...if that means we can be at peace and do as we wish....Freedom...” he said softly as they came closer to the exit of the forest edge.

[ J ] Growing silent Jursol pointed to the beach now within sight. Scattered around still were bits of the ship, and maybe it’s contents of anything made it ashore. The white raptor made a sound as it seemed to pick up on something. Scavengers perhaps? Or perhaps others looking for this elf.

[ L.K ] He reached out and took hold of her scaled flesh with the wrapped edges of his bandages.

“ Wait...”

As he moved up closer beside her, both elf and troll would be in that sneaky crouching position, and from their height vantage looking down at the beach, a small fire with seven figures could be seen huddled about massive piece of drift wood and debris. They had in fact found part of the wreckage of the airship.

“It must have crashed nearby and drifted in the lagoons...”

She could see his eyes flare up at this point had she looked back to him when he spoke. Voided magic’s beginning to drip from the gaps of the wrappings around his fingers, sizzling like a black magma as it hit the ground and slithered back to its master to be reborn again.

“These men are mercenaries, come to claim the price on my head. Their intention was to return me to Quel’thalas and deliver me to a very powerful Magister. They have something very important to me that I need in order to return to my people.”

Lazarius slowly moved a hand toward his shoulder where his robes were not even covering half, she would see the circled serpent branding against his tattooed flesh. The symbol of the Nine.

“I need that talisman...”

[ J ] After scanning the intruders Jursol looked to the elf. She noticed more and more how he differed from others. He was definitely something else indeed.

Her gaze was locked onto the void magic dropping from his fingers seeming to come from the pours themselves. As it sizzled hitting he ground, her eyes widened in amazement and fascination. It was clearly alive as it even returned to his body.

Wishing to ask questions she held her tongue for now. There were enemies to deal with now. His words seemed to break her focus on the void magic as she nodded slowly to him.

“Mercenaries dey may be, but like others trespassing dey will die. I guess we be keeping dem alive long enough ta find what you be looking for.”

A sly wicked grin crossed her lips as she licked her fangs.

“Den I be feeding my raptors good tonight. Perhaps even da small little ones can eat some as well.”

Clearly she had no care for the lives on those down there. To her they were about to be a few meal for her family, and entertainment for her.

“When you be ready I be ready.” She said as she studied the mark, burning it into her memory.

[ L.K ] “There are no reasons to leave them alive... I will strip their flesh from their bones and flay them alive if I need to. The only one I want alive is the one wearing the red cap. He was second in command to the leader I killed on the way down during the crash.”.

Lazarius narrowed his black eyes at the rest of them.

“Elf flesh is delicious...so I have heard from a companion of mine. Your raptors will eat well.”.

Slowly the man rose from the brush and began to pad down his robes and clean himself the best he could.

“Well...how do I look?”. He stated as he gave her a generous charming smile.

“How about we go for a walk dear Jursol? I’m sure they will get quite the shock when we waltz on down and introduce ourselves.”

[ J ] Looking to spot the one he wanted alive she snarled.

“Den the one shall live, while de others become a nice meal for my raptors. I feel dis will be a great night a hunt.”

In the distance the sound of a raptor calling echoed though the jungles. Jursol grinned even more as she readied herself. Looking him over and quietly laughing at his charming smile, she gave a nod of her head.

“Be looking ready to be teaching a lesson to dem.”

She said as she made a strange animal like sound. The jungles seemed even more alive as the other animals reacted to her sound. As he gave word he was ready she started to make her way down, clearing a path for him as she went. Once they were near the beach Jursol blew loudly into her Death Whistle.

Her hope was that mixed with the sudden uproar of wildlife sounds would throw them off. Perhaps make them a bit uneasy being in a new place, that does seem very unforgiving. She remained hidden until he was back next to her. The raptors hunting call growing louder as they to neared the beach.

"Gentlemen!"

[ L.K ] Lazarius hollered loudly as he slid down the embankment and onto the beach where he could be seen clearly walking toward the group of seven turned even more startled.

First the death whistle and the sounds of the creatures nearby causing them to reach for broken pieces of metal and wood that they had used to as makeshift weapons, and now this?

"Gentlemen it is good to see that you've all survived our little crash. . ." He raised his hands upward as he offered to show them he was in fact unarmed. These men were not fools though. “Most of you. . .some of you. . .”

They knew that the restraints missing were a bad thing. Or maybe they didn't.

"Now I know none of us expected to get stranded here on the beautiful sun baked beaches of Zandalar but. . .that is what has happened. Suffice to say we should all hope to eventually make it off of this island in one shape or form or another."

Lazarius walked calmly toward the small camp. If Jursol so chose to join him, the introduction to the men would continue.

"This is Jursol, she is a friend of mine. We've actually decided to come down here to see if you fine, upstanding people were alright. And seeing as how at least some of you didn't get picked off by the shark swarms, it goes without saying that you'd probably like to live past breakfast."

"Shut up you fucking mouthy son of a bitch! Light be damned this was why we bound and gagged you, just Shut up!" yelled one of the men watching the Inquisitor coming toward them.

“Marill let him speak. . .maybe he actually has a way out of here." called another.

"No Calleh, we aren't going to let him speak. . .did you forget that Dawnseeker wants him. We're getting paid a shitload of gold to deliver him alive. . .fuck his plan, we take him in and get that-fucking-money."

The man named Marill snapped back, slapping the side of the moronic man who wanted to allow him a chance.

"Now gentlemen I think that is a pretty unwise decision. . .considering the fact that I'm not actually planning on going back with you. So why don't we just all relax and think about this. . .you just tell me where my talisman is. . . and we'll just forget this whole thing ever happened. . .How does that sound?"

Lazarius asked as he grew closer still, walking at the same pace with his hands raised above his head.

[ J ] Jursol grinned wide as she waited a moment before walking out from the thick jungle. She found the fact they reached for makeshift weapons highly amusing, clear by the pleased look on her face. Her eyes scanned the men as she walked out next to the elf. Hearing him introduce her she gave the men a, very sly, fanged grin.

Hearing the men speaking back to the elf in such a tone as they did, only stood to amuse her even more. She had seen what he can do, and she knew that lack of respect will be the end of them. They need him alive, but he only needs one of them alive. This won’t end well for those men at all. The banter was making her laugh as she kept her hands within sight for now. Staying close to him as they approached the hunters.

“Jo be in mah jungles now. Trespassers be not welcome here.” She said oddly calmly as she grinned more.

“I be thinking you best be tellen him where dat talisman be. That or we can be maken dis a game. I be happy ta help ja meet Ole Bwonsamdi. He be needen some new souls ta rule.”

As she spoke she stretched her clawed hands. A faint humming came from a bag she carried. She had a little surprise for those hunters with her. The screech of raptors grew ever louder as they grew ever closer to the beach.

[ L.K ] Lazarius calmly continued on his trek toward them, his hands raised, and a smile on his face hearing the troll interact with them.

The men were somewhat in a daze at this point. The sight of the tall elf walking toward them with hands raised high. The sight of an even taller troll beside him. That buzzing, what the hell was that buzzing. The screech Of raptors, why did it have to be raptors! They were panicking and bunched together. Eyes wide and hearts beating.

Lazarius turned toward Jursol and smiled.

“Do you hear that? Thump thump, thump thump...such a lovely rhythm that tempo...”.

Lazarius turned his attention back toward the men.

“My good men...this troll...this beautiful...mesmerizing creature...she will end you.”.

He stopped several paces from them, hands still raised.

“I am NOT kidding, she does not take kindly to strangers who burn fires, make messes and just overall are being rude on her shores...you are being rude, you haven’t even introduced yourselves..”

“Im Calleh!” shouted one of the men as he was swatted by Marill.

“ Shut up... look Kashebahl...no hard feelings or anything but you... you have to come with us, this isn’t personal it’s work...you shouldn’t be so hard on us we’re just doing our jobs...” one more of the group had called out.

Lazarius paused and nodded slowly.

“Just doing your...jobs. Right well I mean that does make sense, makes a lot of sense...”.

He looked at Jursol and sympathetically offered her a frown.

“That makes sense doesn’t it Miss Jursol?”.

Lazarius would slowly lower his hands and droop his head.

“Do...any of you know what my job is?”.

He asked as his bare toe started to draw little figures in the sand haphazardly.

“ Youre a rich guy!” Calleh borked again like a fool.

“Shut up Calleh!” Marill howled. “ Youre a noble...you move fine art, spice and fabrics. And you..owned a massive manor in Tirisfal. Look it really doesn’t matter. . .it isn’t personal, it just is what it is. . . ”

Lazarius was tracing a little smiley face as he nodded listening to them. Or wasn’t listening and he chuckled.

“Is what it is. . . Hmm. . . So you don’t know what my job is...”. He continued to draw and extended his palm toward Jursol. He completely ignored what they’d said to get back to his point.

She could see by the gesture that it looked like he was offering her his hand, but then he swept it away and moved it to point at the men. As if now he was saying, “have at them” which was exactly what he was saying.

“My job...is locating individuals such as my beautiful counterpart here; who share a like minded opinion of the state this world is in...rallying under one banner...forging a future together. . .drawing strength and resolve from one another in order to survive the insufferable garbage fire that is Azeroth and nearly all of its inhabitants. ..”.

All of that was said as she did whatever she was going to do. The only thing Lazarius had told her was to leave the one man alive, he changed his mind and called to her.

“Spare Calleh won’t you...I like him.”

Honestly, when I stand in front of the mirror and look at myself I don’t think I’m even the slightest bit cute (I know this is something an idol shouldn’t be saying), there are so many charming and attractive people around me (just look at the other 5th generation members, the senior members, they’re all super cute aren’t they?) compared to them I’m squishy, and if my legs were longer, my face was smaller than I think it’d be better… but regardless of that, for me there is no doubt in my mind that the time where I feel like I’m the most cute and adorable is when I’m standing in front of all my lovely and loving fans, or rather that’s what I want to be!

And so those feelings (desires) are put into the title of this blog eheh

Here’s a picture of me and Aruno after the first day at Jingu

We’re wearing the outfits of our, should be commemorative, 30th single ‘suki toiuno wa rock da ze!’ Even on the first day during the encore we performed SukiRock’ (Ikeda’s way of saying the name of the 30th single) and that’s how we ended the live concert.

What were we trying to hide, it was that our first over-the-air broadcast of SukiRock was a live broadcast! Yeah･:*+.(( °ω° ))/.:+

Everyone, did you watch CDTV? For us, it was the first time that we appeared along side the senior members on a music show! I was so glad, the camera was going around and around in circles while we were dancing and I was in a constant state of nervousness.

The dance this time, for me, was very difficult… it was the biggest feeling of despair I’ve had since Influencer lol

But for some reason, during the tour, when I watched the senior members performing it I couldn’t help be like, I want to dance it too!!! While practicing I could smile naturally, I didn’t have the any tragic feelings eheh

Now I’ll perform it in front of everyone! Are the enjoyable feelings I had when performing it! I hope my feelings of joy were able to reach you!

Everyone, were you able to spot me?

During the online meet and greet on the 4th of September from the end of the 4th time slot and 5th time slot I wasn’t feeling so good. I’m so very sorry to everyone looking forward to meeting me. We should have been able to meet that day but we weren’t able to, even now I’m still extremely sorry and I feel bad about it.

Right now Ikeda is super energetic.

I’m very thankful to all the kind staff members who advised and pleaded with me to not do the meet and greet despite me saying “Even though I’m completely exhausted please let me do the meet and greet!!!’

It’s best to meet when we’re both energetic, I really didn’t want to waste the time of my precious fans.

To everyone that came but couldn’t see me for that meet and greet, I know you were really looking forward to it, so if you like please come see me again in the future, I’ll be waiting.

🎫 National Tour

For a long time we’ve been constantly working up to the National Tour Final, and together we our first blog theme ‘Blog tour’ has come to a close, so sad ߹𖥦߹

But! The blog itself will keep going so if you like please continue to read them. Also about my Nogizaka activities as well!

Well then, my thoughts and feelings.

(I’m sorry, but this might be a little long)

Farewell Midsummer National Tour you did well.

All 15 performances…When I saw the announcement at the end of the birthday live I thought it was outrageous but now that it’s over I feel like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye and I feel really empty. Along with the ending of the National Tour it feels like we ended the Summer together. Maybe we also brought all the rain to Jingu

Having it rain while at Jingu is truly a jinx for Nogizaka but maybe that rain is a gift from the gods of Jingu say welcome back?

But on the 2nd day, the rain was so heavy, Asuka’s agitation of ‘Why is it raining this much’ was amazing.

On the 3rd day the sun was shinning brightly.

The stage was scorching and blinding (´つ_⊂｀)

While doing out midday rehearsal it was hot. While doing Manatsu’s exercise on the ground everyone was jumping like popcorn.

I remembered the words of the background narrator from the 10th year birthday live who said ‘Believing that blue skies will come, in the rain, I ran.’

This year at Jingu I was able to experience both the rain and sun and so I was able to understand the refined taste of the gods of Jingu, Lucky!

On this tour I was once again able to see how amazing the senior members are. The charm and beauty of their performances, backstage seeing their unrivaled effort, and my respect for them grew so much that next time I see their faces they’ll probably be smothered in an explosion of feelings.

The physical appearance of the members is number one, and the only people who’s feelings are even close to them are the feelings of the fans, I’m so glad!

The island of currents, listening from under C stage for some reason put me at ease and it felt like I was being wrapped in something warm, my permanently tense heart and my stiff cheeks felt something kind and gentle brush against them. I really like the lyrics ‘like is like an ocean’

Everyone that help create Nogizaka 46’s history is amazing. It feels like a miracle that I’m able to work with them. Also for ‘aitakattakamoshirenai,’ we were able to go up close to everyone! And the intensity was super cute and everyone it was a really hyped up stage ( ˃ ᵕ ˂ )

To the member with whom I touched hands, and when the song only became claps and we created a circle I was so happy because I could really feel the bonds of the other members.

During Hazuki’s MC, and when we sang Omoide First, we remembered our best memories while we sang →Isn’t that time now? Is what I heard from the other members and it made me want to be like the 3rd generation members and continue to create new memories.

Jumping Joker Flash, Ayame’s first pose was so cute, the melody is kind of like one from Precure.

When I heard it, it felt like everyone was getting a little bit of our energy. Before the hook of the song, I love the gradual increase in voltage of energy for the ‘Saaa’!

I See… really showed of the shinning smiles of the 4th generation members. The smile of the Kaki-san at the center was dazzling, it made me feel that I want to be someone that is able to fit a smile like that.

We sang Zetsubou no ichi byou mae and BanHaga, we performed them multiple times throughout the tour and I feel like I’ve become even more attached to those songs! I wonder if our performance of those songs has improved?

At first I didn’t feel like I fit the first row, but after to talking to the other members and practicing a lot I got better and better little by litte, and when I saw the final performance video I was really happy, I hope that my fans think the same…

Memowies (tears)

Why was Hii-chan no here, it will forever be a mystery 𓅿𓅿𓅿

Campfire block…

The tears of the senior members really left an impression on me, Kaki-san’s tears while singing in that outfit, Manatsu-san’s beautiful tears…

Not only a smile but I’ve come to realize the power of emotions as well. I’m so glad that I was able to sing alongside these members.

Speaking of which the word for emotions in English is ‘Emotion’ at that time I could feel the emotional moments.

Summer block. Summer festival block…

Sky Diving and Namida ga mada Kanashimi datta koro, it doesn’t feel real that the members that performed these songs are no longer here. Even now, wearing those clothes I want to jump on the stage with a one handed microphone *⋆✈︎

The outfit of Sky Diving, when I was just a fan, left an impression on me. On music programs it was the outfit for Guru Guru curtain.

The more that we wear the outfits of the senior members the more and more nervous and anxious that I become, but at the same time I feel that their power is being shared with me and I feel that I’m able to give more than I usually can, so much so that I can fly.

When Matsuo-san was center, the stadium changed their penlight color to turquois and white and it felt like we were up in the sky 💭

Namida ga mada kanashimi datta koro, it felt nostalgic to do the outro rhythm with the senior member backstage.

We had our voices in sync doing ‘ichi ni saan, ichi ni saan’ lol

Personally, I wonder if a sulking face would fit the image of a girl who can’t convey how they feel to someone? And so I tried doing it during rehearsals and the face that was reflected on the camera looked like a pout, I remember regretting trying it. I’m pretty sure I was smiling during the live version.

I wanted to ride in Yamashita-san’s cart, I’m glad there wasn’t any requests to see the paper and bamboo grass blizzard‪🎋

I joined the 5th generation in February of this year, and since then I can’t believe that half a year has already passed, I’ve had a rich and enjoyable time in Nogizaka46 during that time.

Especially the feeling that this is the first summer that I’ve ever had. It was difficult, hot, tiring but most of all fun and enjoyable…! I did more than live it to the fullest.

I’m very grateful to Nogizaka46 for giving me this wonderful and precious experience. Thank you so much to the senior members for bringing us to such a wonderful stage, and to the staff and the fans.

Trivial talk

At the other venues on the tour there was on the main stage and center stage, but at Jingu there were three more, main stage, C stage, B stage, Upper stage, lower stage.

Ikeda surely thought that it went B stage, C stage and assigned the order of ABC, but didn’t know where A stage was, how embarrassing…(´∩ω∩｀)

B (back) stage and C (Center) stage, Yep, I realized this before I asked anyone, yep

Such a bright A stage…

Those are my memories of Jingu.

I know it was long, I still have feelings that I haven’t written about but I’ll write about them some time in the future!

Celebratory flowers! Iwaibana (　・´ｰ・｀)

Without the fans I don’t think I would have been able to make it this far on the National Tour.

While in rehearsals and while on the stage I was always nervous thinking, ‘I wonder if there is anyone supporting me, I wonder if they will be able to see me’. Now, when I saw people holding up towels with my name on it at the live concert I was so happy, it’s something I will never forget. No matter how far away they were I could see the sparkle of my pen light colors and I was able to wave my hand soooo much.

Seeing the celebratory flowers before the live concert gave me a lot of strength, of course at the live concert there were a lot of people watching me and after the live I was able to read all the opinions and thoughts of the concert through my blog comments and at Meet and Greets… I’m so glad.

It’s a symbol from SukiRock! When we’re taking a picture or anything else I do it. YaY 🤟🏻

Does it have a name? I want to know.

This time we watched the senior members ‘let’s make this single a hit’ portion.

To climb that cliff alone, you really need to be brave and have guts. From Yumiki-san and all the other members, watching them do their best gave me a lot of strength and energy.

I watched the other 5th generation members on TV when they were participating in the 29th single campaign. I feel like participating in the single campaign is a really precious opportunity and if I ever get the chance I would like to do my best to make it a hit as well.

How much so… from what Bananaman-san asked, one of the main reasons that Satsuki-chan got a slightly good luck name was because of how hard she worked for that campaign. That’s why I want to do my best so they can bestow me with the name Ikeda 💪🏽( ¨̮ 💪🏽) Power!

💌Meron-san…I was thinking about asking you a question but then I remembered about it recently, I completely forgot, I’m a little annoyed and so I’ll send you the outline of the cheeseburger I made and ate for lunch. First the patty (meat) I made it with a slightly rich flavor. Then, while listening to the sizzling tune played by the Hamburg steak patty which is already good on it’s on I place the cheese on top. The cheese melting upon the patty is like Niagara falls, an earthly paradise. And then of course the patty which was prepared like a Hamburg steak which is thin and took into consideration the commercially available bun but also large enough that it could not contain that size of the patty, the overflowing cheese, and the of course the vegetables and sauce make it a sight to behold. Yuri on Festival voice drama (detailed report)

I went to watch the next-day viewing of yesterday’s Yuri on Festival event, and this time I took notes for the drama so I’ll write a more detailed summary, also because this one isn’t going to be sold on DVD. I believe other people have probably written reports too, but in cases such as this I think “the more the merrier” because it’s not recorded so it’s better to have more accounts. Also, now you’ll start seeing more Japanese reports & art too. Most people were keeping quiet out of consideration for the ones who could only watch the viewing and didn’t want spoilers.

Official title of the drama: “Fundoshi da yo!!! Sekai Metsubou Daipinchi Hasetsu Kunchi Spiritual!!” which roughly translates to “Fundoshi!!! The world is in danger of being destroyed. Hasetsu Kunchi Spiritual!!”

It was in 3 parts, separated by game and information corners. I hope it’s not too confusing, but especially the last part is impossible to summarize decently because they talked a lot and I couldn’t possibly take note of everything, not to mention what they say is mostly crazy stuff, lol. For some parts and lines I double-checked looking at other Japanese comments online. If something is not clear feel free to send me an ask.

The story starts with Yuuri and Victor watching Hasetsu Kunchi, a local festival in Hasetsu, the day after the “Victor With Friends” ice show (and the Chihoko drama). Victor says “Look Yuuri, so many sumo wrestlers!” and Yuuri replies “It’s not sumo wrestlers, they are wearing fundoshi!”. He explains to him that fundoshi + happi (the “coat” they are wearing) are the traditional clothes people wear at the festival, and Victor seems very interested in the fundoshi. Yuuri flinches and says that he has a hangover from the day before, and they have a conversation somewhat like this: Victor: “You were amazing yesterday~. (he says this in a sexy voice and the audience was like “wooohh”) I can’t believe you did that~.” Yuuri: “Did I do something again??” Victor: “Eh, you don’t remember? Last night you…” Yuuri: “No wait, don’t tell me! Some things are better left unknown…” Yuuri seems kind of resigned, like “I messed up after drinking once again.. well, as always..” (he says this in a monologue, not to Victor). Yurio suddenly shows up and is super excited about the hikiyama (the festival floats). He comments that the floats look like the warriors’ cars in Mad Max. Yuuri explains that Hasetsu Kunchi is a harvest festival, and that the floats all have their own story. Victor sees one shaped like a squid, and Yuuri says it’s called “ankoku ika aramitama” (which Yurio translates as something like “dark ika wild heart”) (ika = squid) and it’s based on the legend of a dark squid that tried to destroy the world by spreading dark matter. Yurio is totally thrilled by the story. To placate the squid and save the world from destruction, people sang, danced and flattered the squid a lot. Victor finds the story original and proposes to use it as Yuuri’s new SP, wearing fundoshi as the costume. Yuuri curtly replies that he’d get kicked out for excessive nudity, and that if he had to leave figure skating because of something like that he’d probably want to hide under a rock and die. Yurio comments that “doing the squid dance in fundoshi” is exactly what Yuuri, together with his father, did the night before, and Yuuri says “ok, I want to hide under a rock and die” (he says “人間やめたい” in Japanese, that literally translates to “I want to quit being a human”, but the meaning is the same as “hide under a rock and die”).

The scene moves to Chris, who is enjoying the festival too. He notices people wearing fundoshi and says “oh, that’s the Japanese traditional T-back (thong)” (he says exactly that, in English). He wants to try it on, so he asks one of those people but mistakes the sentence in Japanese and ends up saying “I want to become your fundoshi”, of course shocking the guy. He then manages to convey the message using a Hasetsu guide that he got at Yutopia and finally gets to try the fundoshi. He comments that the fundoshi feels like “freedom and danger mixed together” and he likes it. In the end they also invite him to ride one of the floats.

Back to Yuuri and Victor, who have lost sight of Yurio. Yuuri explains to Victor that the floats are 14, though they were originally 15 but one suddenly disappeared. This 15th float represented “Ame-no-chihoko-nushinokami” and of course Victor reacts to the word “chihoko”. Yuuri (who is clueless regarding the “chihoko” issue) says that it’s a god of crops, relationships and basically like a god of love. Victor asks whether it’s a goddess and Yuuri replies that it’s a genderless god that was said to bring love to people. No one knows why it disappeared, some say that it might have burnt down and some that it was killed by the ankoku ika (the dark squid), but it’s also said that it will appear again when the world is filled with love.

They are interrupted by some floats coming their way, and they notice that Chris is riding one of them (it was funny how Victor said “oh, it has some familiar eros as a topping”). He jumps down (with a triple Salchow) and asks them how he looks in the fundoshi. Yuuri says that he stands out because he’s the only one who clearly has an athlete’s body. Chris wants to use it for his next program, but Yuuri once again says that he’d get a huge point deduction, so Chris proposes to use it for an exhibition program together with Victor. He wants to “make the rink wet with our fundoshi bomb” (I believe it’s a reference to Plushenko’s “Sex Bomb”) and Yuuri strongly opposes saying “You can’t do that, the rink’s not gonna get wet, it’s gonna become like the Genkai Sea!!!” (it’s a sea in Kyushu, in front of the Karatsu bay). They then have this conversation: Victor: “Yuuri, we want to try the Hasetsu Kunchi look too, right?” Yuuri: “’We’?” Victor: “It’s a pity to only watch. A festival must be enjoyed by participating!” Yuuri: “Ehh…” (clearly annoyed) Victor: “Yuu~ri~” Yuuri: “Don’t make that cute face Victor, it won’t work. I said I feel sick because of the hangover, didn’t I?” And then Victor and Chris start chanting “en~ya~” “en~ya” (it’s a call the participants say during this festival) one after the other, over and over, changing the tone midway, with Yuuri repeating “no way” “I’m NOT doing it” “I’m not wearing that” “you’re not gonna convince me even if you change the tone” “I said NO” and then the drama fades out. The second part starts with Georgi who seems to like the atmosphere of the festival and wants to incorporate it in his program for the next season. He then starts composing some “haiku” because he got interested after Yuuri’s mom told him about them. He also mentions Yuuri & his father’s squid dance, says that he wants to thank the Katsuki family for entertaining him during his stay in Hasetsu and takes note of the names of Yuuri’s parents on his notebook. He then receives a phone call from Yakov (we do not hear Yakov’s voice), who is calling him because he can’t reach Yurio. Yakov asks him to tell Yurio to get him a heated “washlet” (the Japanese toilet seat with incorporated “shower” function) from the local department store of electric appliances Best Denki if he passes by Fukuoka on his way back to Russia. While taking notes, he is worried that he might mix up “Yuri” and “Yuuri” so he writes “Yurio” instead because that’s how Victor was calling him (I’m sure Yurio will love Victor for this..). He suddenly happens upon Yurio and at this point we find out that Georgi is actually wearing a fundoshi too. Yurio is running away from the Yuri Angels. Georgi tells him that if he wants to hide he should wear a fundoshi, because “as leaves can easily hide in a forest, you can hide among fundoshi with a fundoshi”. Georgi then leaves after Yurio calls him “old man”, but he notices that Yurio is stalking him. When he confronts him about this in the beginning Yurio tries to feign ignorance, but eventually confesses that he lost sight of the others and can’t find his way back (here the audience went “awwww”). The scene ends with Georgi creating a haiku where he calls Yurio “lost kitten” and Yurio gets mad.

Leo and Guang-Hong are watching the festival together. Leo says that he is considering creating a “wa-pro” (a figure skating program with a Japanese theme) for the upcoming season. He said that he was deeply influenced by Carolina Kostner’s 2017 SP programs “God of Thunder” and “Bonzo’s Montreux”, especially the use of drums and other rhythmical sounds combined with her skating technique. Guang-Hong says that he likes Akio Sasaki’s SP program “Japanese Dance No.5” and the ninja-like sound effects/performance. They both say that ninja are cool. Speaking about cool performances that include movements like slashing with a sword they quote Tatsuki Machida’s exhibition program to “Concierto de Aranjuez”. They then conclude mentioning Yuzuru Hanyu’s “Seimei” and Leo says that one day he wants to create a wa-pro that suits his own style. (I am thankful to the skating fans who listed up all the programs mentioned in the drama because I would never have been able to remember them...)

The scene changes to Michele and Emil, who find a fundoshi shop. Emil is fascinated by a very long fundoshi and asks Michele if he ever tried aerial skating (skating performance that involves lifting oneself up with a rope hanging from the ceiling). He said he has tried, and Emil proposes to do an aerial skating exhibition program together in the next season. He then starts saying progressively crazy things like “with the fundoshi we will be able to be free and fly to space!”. He says that, once in space, they will battle an enemy army and fuse together with the power of fundoshi. Since Michele doesn’t seem thrilled Emil says that if he doesn’t want to do it he will ask Sara, and of course he gets mad. Leo and Guang-Hong join them and get all hyper looking at the fundoshi too. Guang-Hong says that he wants to use the fundoshi to train to become a ninja, because of something he read on the Hasetsu guide he got from Yuuri’s house. Emil is like “we can’t do something so stupid” (the one who was talking about flying to space..) but Michele is actually interested in becoming a ninja because apparently Sara used to love ninja when she was little.

Third part. Yuuri, Victor and Chris are now in “Hasetsu Kunchi style” (fundoshi + happi). Victor: “Yuuri, how do I look in the Hasetsu Kunchi style?” Yuuri: (annoyed) “It looks great, of course. Both you and Chris have a nice athlete’s body even now in the off-season, of course it looks good on you.” Victor: (evidently making fun of him) “Oh Yuuri, I know we’re in the off-season, but don’t you have a little too much flesh over that fundoshi~?” Yuuri: (more irritated) “Yeah, my belly stands out, doesn’t it?? That’s why I said I didn’t want to do this… Oh, I might try to hide it with the happi”. He also suddenly mentions feeling cold, which might be foreshadowing what happens later in the drama. Yuuri wonders where the others are, and Chris says “I’m going to help” using a Japanese expression that literally translates to “I’m going to strip” (人肌脱ぐ, I can’t come up with a more literal translation that would have a similar nuance right now..), so Victor tells him “if you get more naked than you are now it will be considered a crime in Japan”. Chris starts doing a rotational lift (no one says who is lifting him lol) on the top of the float to act as a beacon so that the others can find them, and they actually do find them.

The first ones to arrive are Georgi and Yurio. Yurio is dressed in Hasetsu Kunchi style too now, and he says it’s because “fundoshi will hide other fundoshi”. Georgi asks what “en~ya~” means and Yuuri says it’s like the Russian “davai”. Georgi takes note. They then spot a few long fundoshi in the distance and realize it’s Guang-Hong, Leo, Emil and Michele. Guang-Hong says “I told you that rotational lift was Chris!”. They explain that they were running because they are training to become ninja for their “wa-pro”, and Yuuri can’t understand how running in a fundoshi could be connected to the wa-pro. Chris points out that Michele didn’t participate in the ice show “Victor With Friends” and Michele says he came because Emil told him he could see something extreme in Japan (he is probably referring to Victor doing the shachihoko pose on the top of Hasetsu castle, because I remember him referring to it as “extreme” in the previous drama too). He says that he was actually in Canada with Sara to prepare their new program but then Sara left him alone to go on a “girls’ trip” with Mila. Yuuri asks about Phichit and Leo says he went to Detroit to prepare his new program with Celestino (they are basically explaining why the skaters who participated in the ice show are not here, though the actual reason is of course that their voice actors couldn’t come to the event). Guang-Hong says that Seung-gil is having his next program choreographed by Kenji-sensei (Kenji Miyamoto). Yuuri comments, almost to himself, “I see, everyone is getting ready for the next season”, and Guang-Hong tells him “why don’t you prepare a wa-pro too, since you’re Japanese?”. The word “Japanese” reminds Yuuri of Minami, and Guang-Hong tells him that he went back to Fukuoka because he has to study for an exam.

Guang-Hong says that Minami wanted to get inspiration from a festival for his program, and Yuuri decides to send him a video he took of Hasetsu Kunchi for him to use as a reference (he also writes “good luck for the exam”). However, Guang-Hong remembers that Minami talked about the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Yurio comments that it’s a super cool festival, much bigger and cooler than Hasetsu’s, and that he found out about it at the information desk of Fukuoka airport. He also says that in Fukuoka there is “Best Denki, a very cool shop where you can find all kinds of electric appliances”, and that you cannot find it in Hasetsu. Yuuri mentions (with a sulky tone) a series of places that you can’t find in Hasetsu but only in Fukuoka, because it’s a larger city where people “can follow all their dreams”. Victor tells Yuuri that he should start thinking about his next program too, and you can hear that Yuuri is getting progressively upset about the matter. He says (with a self-deprecating tone) that he feels stupid for acting like a “senpai” and sending Minami a video of Hasetsu Kunchi while he had in mind Yamakasa which is much cooler, and that maybe he (Yuuri) should perform as a clown in his next program. Victor says that in the morning he met Minami in the onsen and he told him very excitedly that he loved Takahito Mura’s program “Shogun” and one day he also wanted to perform a program like that (here Suwabe imitates Minami’s voice and it was hilarious). Yuuri comments that it’s a cool program with which Mura won the Four Continents in 2014 and that he (Yuuri) would never be able to perform such a heroic program. Guang-Hong says that Minami even uploaded a video in which he skated Mura’s “Shogun”, like Yuuri’s video in which he skated “Hanarezu ni Soba ni Ite”.

The atmosphere gets progressively tense as Yuuri is clearly shocked by the fact that Minami looks up to Mura and wants to become like him, because he thought he looked up to himself. The scene where Minami tells Yuuri that he looks up to him is shown on the screen and Yuuri is like “Minami-kun said that he looked up to me, didn’t he???”. (It was amusing how one of the things that contributes to upset Yuuri is that Minami did “kidoku through”, which in messaging programs like LINE means that the other person has read your message but ignored it instead of replying to it). Victor says that Yuuri is starting to “break”, and the others suddenly see the dark squid float getting close. Yuuri starts saying nonsense like “Victor is my inspiration, and I’m Minami-kun’s inspiration, so basically I am to him what Victor is to me, so basically I am Victor. If Mura-kun becomes Minami-kun’s inspiration, it means that Mura-kun will become Victor. Victor Mura Nikiforov Takahito! He said that.. I was his inspiration.. You said it, didn’t you… MINAMIIII”. Guang-Hong sends a video of what’s happening to Phichit, and Yuuri jumps on the dark squid float. He starts exhaling something dark from his mouth and Yurio (who is convinced that Yuuri just drank too much) says “I bet it’s just puke”. Emil replies “But it’s like, swirling in the air. I’ve never seen such extreme puke!!” (Even after this they keep on referring to it as “puke” or “extreme puke” a few times)

Yuuri starts to speak with a low tone, like a villain, and says he is “ankoku ika aramitama” (he also says a few lines that are basically parodies of lines that he actually said in the anime) and he will destroy the world. Michele says he laughs like the final boss of a game, and Yurio comments that sometimes Lilia laughs like that too (roar of laughter from the audience). They try to speak to Yuuri but no matter what they say he replies with a sentence that ends with “I will destroy the world”. Georgi says that what Yuuri is exhaling is “dark matter”, and as soon as he says that Yurio suddenly gets excited (like “OMG DARK MATTER SO COOL”). Georgi says that it comes from disruptive feelings such as jealousy, which attracted “ankoku ika aramitama” and caused it to possess him. He explains that a long time ago a dark squid created a black hole with the dark matter it had inside and tried to destroy the world. He read this on the Hasetsu guide written by Yuuri’s father. He starts talking about the guide itself but Victor stops him and tells him “You can tell us on our flight back, we have to save the little piggy (kobuta-chan) first”.

In the meantime, Michele is about to be sucked into the black hole but is saved by Emil with their fundoshi fusion technique that they wanted to use in the exhibition. Georgi says that, according to the guide, to defeat the squid people sang, danced and flattered it, but Yurio says he’d rather get sucked into the black hole than flatter Yuuri. Yuuri starts making painful noises and they realize that the festival song which is now playing is affecting the squid. They want to sing but don’t know the lyrics of the song, so they decide to use the “poems” written on Georgi’s notebook (which are mostly the random notes he has been taking so far, like the names of Yuuri’s parents etc) (EDIT: You can now find a full translation of the "lyrics” here!).

They sing and then encourage the audience to chant “davai~ davai~” together with them. Yuuri wavers between the squid and himself, and Victor tells him to remember his dream, to remember Victor’s first arrival in Hasetsu and the time he, Yuuri and Yurio spent together there. “Yuri on Ice” starts playing over scenes from the first episodes, and Victor recalls their memories in Hasetsu, among which the scene where they talked on the beach. He says that he was very happy when he asked Yuuri what he wanted their relationship to be and Yuuri told him to “just be Victor”. Victor: “Remember your skating. Figure skating. All the people who support you. Me and you. What is there?” Yuuri: “Love” Victor: “Yes,” Victor & Yuuri together: “Love”. The dark matter starts to shine and they realize that darkness vanished from Yuuri’s heart. Suddenly, the float of “Ame-no-chihoko-nushinokami”, the god of love, appears. Georgi says that it appears when the world is filled with love, and that this is another thing he read on the Hasetsu guide.

Yuuri is finally back to himself. Victor grumbles “So this is Chihoko..”. Yuuri notices the float and exclaims: “Why is the ame-no-chihoko-nushinokami” float here!?”. Victor: “It’s love” Yuuri: “L-Love..?” Chris: “So Victor is the one who makes Yuuri go crazy and also that brings him to his senses. I’m jealous~”. (The audience here was “woooohhh”) At this point Georgi remembers to tell Yurio that Yakov wants him to buy a heated washlet from Best Denki. And Guang-Hong says that Phichit wrote on his SNS “my friend is a human again!” (parody of the line “my friend got married!”). Yuuri receives a reply to his message from Minami, where he says “Hasetsu Kunchi looks cool! I need to do my best to become like Yuuri-kun”, so Yuuri is all happy. The drama ends with Victor saying “The festival can’t start without you, Yuuri. Hasetsu’s night isn’t over yet.” and Yuuri yelling to the public “Everyone! Enjoy Hasetsu!”

And they lived happily ever after… (no they don’t say this but I think it fits). From here on it’s just my impressions.

This drama was really amusing and I could comment about basically every part.. I love when Victor and Chris annoy Yuuri together (like, you suddenly wonder who is the oldest there, lol), and how Yuuri complains but gives in. Also, Victor doing a cute face when he’s trying to persuade him… And Yuuri who is basically treating Victor in a way you would never have expected only watching the first 2-3 episodes of the series (and that just shows how close they are now).

Also, Yurio being annoyed the whole time but going ZOMG whenever something “cool” is involved. It’s hard to call this drama “canon” because of its surreal content, but if the characters are IC there is a chance he might end up being called “Yurio” by his Russian rinkmates too, lol.

Unfortunately I don’t think the summary does Georgi justice, because lots of the amusing parts are impossible to take notes of while listening… Same for all the crazy bits in the third part, and of course the way they pronounced the lines, which is hard to express with plain text but was definitely one of the best parts of the drama. Yuuri changes his voice so many times… And Victor’s lines too can sound completely different depending on how he pronounces them (sometimes he uses a sexy voice, so lines that would otherwise be normal sound more sensual or suggestive). I wish they’d release this drama on CD as a standalone, so more people can listen to it, but I guess it’s difficult because they mention names of real people and, most importantly, real shops/brands.. They’d have to bleep them out, but I’d be ok with them doing it if it makes the drama releasable, lol.

Reasons why you love the unit/character/series/pairings:

Unit: One is the genre of their songs. I prefer songs that are upbeat and rock-ish like SolidS and Procella, and unique like Growth. Its not to say I dont like the songs of SOARA, Quell, Gravi and the Tsukiuta girls… I like their songs too. But the top three units made me addicted to their songs. lol.

Another reason is their relationships. Procella’s relationship are like of a family (albeit dysfunctional lol) but still has this close group feeling that not entirely familial. I love how despite them being wary at first of Shun and always complains and comments (tsukkomi) on Shun’s mysterious ways, the members of Procella still cares and listens to their leader. As for SolidS, I was kind of shock at first, especially the dynamic of Shiki and Tsubasa, because unlike the other units, SolidS has the mature/adult feeling. And for me, its kind of refreshing, something new. And for Growth, its a first for me to see a member of a unit who was a former salaryman and a NEET, and was (sort of) adopted and being taken care of someone who is younger than him. Lol. Its like a new experience. And seeing that Mamoru, despite being an adult, actually acts childish, innocent and cute… and how the Growth members love Mamoru’s songs so much. Their relationship is so heartwarming.

Character: The fact that Shun-sama has the mysterious aura, a Demon Lord and a Hajime-fan immediately made me fall for him. Lol. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what happened, its like one glimpse of Shun-sama’s appearance and personality made me fall for him right away! XD. Meanwhile, Tsubasa, this cheeky yet charming guy… what made me fall for him is, first and foremost, his voice. I think I know what Shiki is feeling when it comes to Tsubasa’s voice. Its beautiful and… I’m actually having difficulty in describing it but its just really beautiful. Next is his personality and talent. I do agree that Tsubasa seems like a guy who is overconfident and a show off at first glance but if you just observe him and look at him really closely, you will see a guy who is full of confidence not because of his ego but because he has the talent and attitude befitting of an idol. Not only that but he’s also hardworking and he may not look like it but he genuinely cares about the other members of SolidS and his friends. And lastly Mamo-chan. This sweet, adorable, cinnamon roll sunshine is perhaps one of the unexpected characters I’ve ever encounter in an idol group/anime. An orphan who became a salaryman then a NEET but despite the harshness of life, he was able to retain his positive outlook in life and he has this vision to see the world in a different scenery, like how he composes songs that can take you to another place, another world. And to think he’s self-taught! Such talent!

Series: I love both the Tsukiuta and Tsukipro series. They have their own story to tell, songs that are addicting to listen to and personalities that some might say clashes with each other but its makes Tsukiuta and Tsukipro unique to other idol group/series.

Pairings: With the way they showcase Shun as a Hajime-fan, the way they’re showing the fans how HajiShun, ShikiTsuba, KouMamo, MoriSora and ShuEi are like semi-canon pairs…. Its hard not to ship them. Especially with all the not so subtle hints and the “L.O.V.E. Hajime Love! ” and the “Darling~ Honey,” and the “Kou-kun wa daisuki da yo.”

Yeah…. its hard not to fall in love with those ships…. XD

Tears of a Mother

Here I am with the first part of this month’s themed week in “Lyrical Love”! Today’s subject is one of the most famous songs by the Japanese band Buck-Tick, entitled Jupiter and released as one of the lead-tracks of the sixth album Kurutta Taiyou (Lunatic Sun) on 21st February 1991. This song is one of the most important of their huge repertory, because of the passage of genre which meant for them, between a nostalgical rock melody and the dark-shaded image which shaped the band as we know it now, dealing with a heartful theme.

THE MUSIC

A vibrant melody played by the guitar opens the theme, along with far and suffused vocals; Sakurai’s voice evolves inside the song, going from the suffused, closer to a nostalgical style, to a flowing and melancholic vibe, around a strong and melting melody, driven by the perfect harmony between the chilling instruments, which become stronger in the second part, thanks to the drums and the guitar and the overwhelming vocal interpretation, building up a gloomy and intense dark-rock ballad, unique in this band’s history.

THE WORDS

Written by the singer Atsushi Sakurai, this song is really important for the band itself, both for a musical and a more personal reason. As well as for the sound change mentioned above and for the different text style, darker and less closer to their early themes with a lot of symbolical elements, it has a particular meaning for the author. In fact at that time Sakurai has lost his mother, because of her disease, and the pain for her loss was the main image who inspired this song. For understanding it, we should start from the album title; the lunatic sun is a reference to the existence, lived by everybody and therefore impossible to avoid, despite its unpredictable shades. In general the album is filled with astronomical elements used as symbols and this song is titled Jupiter, as the biggest planet of Solar System, but mainly for the father of gods in Roman mythology, the one who created all the living things. From the words of the text we can see that the core image is a painful separation, between a mother and his son, like if the earth gets separated from the divine plan of existence; this separation brings out a strong loneliness for the protagonist, along with pain and unhappiness. And now... let’s analyze the song!

I) The text starts with the protagonist who notices a falling star dancing in the sky, while he is going away from the moon spiral, the following of each phase of life (Arukidasu tsuki no rasen wo ryuusei dake ga sora ni matte iru) and from there he saw her, who seemed little to him, waved gently with her hand (soko kara wa chiisaku mieta anata dake ga/yasashiku te wo furu); on her cheeks, red drops were flowing, a sign of a goodbye, of their separation (Hoho ni nagaredasu akai shizuku wa semete owakare no shirushi).

II) In this sequence he regrets of not having known before that he couldn’t leave without any consequence (Hajime kara shitte ita hazu sa modoreru nante), but it happened only for a little time (dakedo...sukoshi dake), because now he wants to forget all the knives who cut his chest and his heart and let him drowning deeply in his pain, thinking that it was good (wasureyou subete no naifu/mune wo kiri saite fukaku shizumeba ii); on his eyelids, the afterimages of his life are floating and disappearing, as if the light he sees next to him reminds the Mother (Mabuta ukande kiete iku zanzou wa marude haha ni nita hikari, the word “mother” has been translated in capital letter because it refers to the Virgin Mary, as you can see even in the song’s videoclip, the Christian figure of the motherhood in general, linked to the author’s mother) and finally all the tears, the blood, the withered things and the feelings he had become more and more distant, because he is closer to his mother (soshite namida mo chi mo minna kare hate/yagate haruka naru omoi).

III) This sequence is more focused on the protagonist’s conscience; in fact he wonders how long he should be sorry for his pain, in order to get used in being kind in his life (Dore hodo kuyami tsuzuketara/ichido wa yasashiku nareru ka na?) and after having said goodbye to her mother’s gentle smile (sayonara yasashikatta egao) he asks if he will sleep alone in that night (konya mo hitori de nemuru no kai?), with his own pain.

IV) The final sequence starts with the repetition of the final line from the first one and then goes on with the image of the protagonist’s body, wet by the beautiful drops of the moon, the tears of his mother (konya kirei da yo tsuki no shizuku de yogoreta kono karada sae mo); then he wonders how long he should hurt other people because of his pain, in order to become kind only for one night (Donna ni hito wo kizutsuketa/konya wa yasashiku nareru ka na?) and after having said goodbye to his mother’s smile, now sad and kind (kanashikatta), asks again if he will sleep alone in that night, and probably he will be forever in his own pain.

A mother’s love, which gives joy and kindness to whoever feels it, but when she is not there anymore, the person who felt it lives with a great pain and a big sense of emptiness. Buck-Tick deals with a not simple theme, starting from a sad personal event, related to the author, and arriving to unveil the true sense of the tie between a mother and his son, one who can’t be broken completely, where the loss is something who destroys and gives pain for the son and for whoever loved her.

Yeah so @starsburnouttoo tagged me in this like a month or two ago and I typed it up and never posted it so here it is. My bad.

Hello! Project 2021 Spring "Kacho Fuugetsu"

Today, was also the last performance for Kacho! Everyone, really, good work~!

Thank you for your support until the end

It was really supposed to be a performance in Osaka today for Fuugetsu

Everyone --- :(

It ended up being cancelled, Since it was was long-awaited day, Please let me write about Kacho Fuugetsu today too!

(I said I would yesterday though! lol)

My 2shots with the members, I successfully challenged taking them with everyone, so there are a lot

they're all together on Instagram

Having concerts, with the members, there are lots of scenes where our eyes met <3

Everyone was grinning,

It had a warm feeling

But,

Towards those scenes of us meeting eyes, our basic posture was facing towards everyone so!

What makes you feel the members the most,

this time its the voices!!

Everyones singing voices, it come in with a thud!

Since I had a lot of moments like, I like that voice now,

I think I'll look back on it..... <3

Kamu-chan, thank you for really doing your best in both the Wind and Moon performances!!

Kamu-chan's voice!! I like it so much!! (its the best in the last chorus of Oyogenai Mermaid)

Its also the best in the last chorus of Dakishimete Dakishimete, and also her lines in Hatsukoi Sunrise are the best,

my favorite in particular personally is, Oh my wish!'s ♪this is what you have to do to shine..... (Susumu beki michi ya kirakira to) Listening to Kamu-chan there she has a great and kinda voice

Even as we've been performing it in Morning, I like that it wasn't like something I had heard before

During the face to face dance in Dondengaeshi, even though its a cool song, she wasn't at all! She was grinning ←

Rin-chan!!! Rin-san!!!

Um, yesterday, I was like, one night I saw a pretty big lizard stuck to the window of my house and I was like Uwaaaaaa! Since Rin-chan likes reptiles, even though it was late at night, I took the trouble of sending her a photo of it

It was fun! its like we could feel each other, I liked that time

Dan-chan's voice, her singing, everywhere has left an impression on me

Why is it there, until Dan-chan's solo part there, Dan-chan and I make eye contact, I'm grinning <3

This girl, the next moment, singing so cooly?

I wonder if its conveyed I fell in love every time it was really cool

Renai Destiny ~Honne wo Ronjitai~'s ♪this feeling of fuzziness, rather, this sense of justice put on as a public façade (Moyamoya to sore ijou no tatemae no seigiken)

Matching the music, aren't there various ways to sing this phrase? I feel like its packed in, I really love that its so cool there!!!!!

This was when BEYOOOOOND's weren't able to perform in Kacho Fuugetsu but, all the parts that were sung with Koko-chan, they became Saorin's solo parts, her doing that was really cool and impressive

Really! Amazing!

Speaking of making eye contact, the part where we put our hands together in the choreography of the B melo for Date ja nai yo Uchi no Jinsei wa, Saorin's eyes were big and round, was she being charming? or was she doing it normally? what is it?,,,I was arbitrarily being played with <3 I liked it <3

For Saorin, I'll call her Saorin but, sometimes, Saori!!! its like want to call her that, I find it interesting and unique~~~ lol

Maopin! Good work performing with Moon as well she performed more than anyone else, thank you

I had many duet parts to sing with Maopin♪

the part I liked from Maopin is,

DanshaISM's, ♪ the things we really need (hitsyou na, mono wa)

her sense of rhythm between the no, na, to, mo!!! I love that part!!!

For the performance, even with Maopin singing, the moment our eyes meet, she is naturally cute, I love it

by the way since this is a Tsubaki song, I can listen to it in the future!! I'm happy!!

she was also cool in Ai no Sono...

For Oh my wish!, in Winds she was a dance member, in Moon she was a singing member, she did both of them

the choreography is different, and the standing positions are different

I make eye contact with her in Renai Destiny, I try to pull in Koko-chan, but probably, as it seems like Koko-chan didn't really get it, she was moving all floaty~, it was doubly cute lol

I'm happy we stood on stage together, I was happy again from Miyo-chan, feeling happy about it!!

I feel like I am in the process of a recovery of some kind.

While this summer has been really stressful so far, I have come to some realizations. One of them was that my entire method of storytelling has changed, and somewhere along the line I stopped telling stories. I have been too wrapped up in strategy, and that is largely because I work on social marketing all day. Posting a photo of my life is quick and easy to do in the moment, but somehow all my actual stories have been condensed down into photos and attempts at witty commentary on whatever’s going on in my life. I MISS telling my stories. Case in point:

Back in the day, yada yada, I used to write far too many words. Honestly, I think I may be coming full circle – because I need to bring back storytelling the way I used to do it, back when I wrote because I wanted to. So all strategy aside – I’m going to tell the story of a recent weekend with my bestie on a road trip to Devil’s Lake in Baraboo, WI.

This hiking trip was like someone threw me a lifeline and pulled me out of a well. I suppose it’s appropriate to say thanks, Adam. ❤

I’m really not sure what was getting me down other than the general malaise of American politics and personal existential doubt… but down I was and these past few days I forced myself (with help) up and out of the doldrums. Let me just tell you how I lived my best life for a little while:

Devil’s Lake State Park – Road Trip!

My best friend had a great idea to go hiking and he had some really scenic land in mind for the trip. We both needed to have fun on a budget this week, too, so this worked out great. We tried to get up early, but ended up not leaving until after 8 pm. It’s about two hours drive to Devil’s Lake State Park, and of course we had to make a pit stop at a random Old Navy. Like you do.

I’ve known Adam since we were in middle school, and despite all the twists and turns of life we have remained as close as ever. Despite years apart, living on opposite ends of the country, he has been one of my biggest supporters and is my brother as far as I’m concerned. Sort of like Odin and Loki – and we often seem to have that dynamic at play. Still, we have survived a few road trips in our day and each one makes us stronger. We lost our GPS connection at one point, and ended up changing routes for a more “scenic route” and discovered that we were going to have to take the Merrimac Ferry across the Wisconsin River. Adam remembered a family vacation from childhood where they had taken this ferry, and we video chatted with his mom briefly while we crossed.

Once we were off the Ferry, the rest of the drive was short but scenic. I held my phone out the sunroof to get shots of some of the beautiful rural parts of Wisconsin. Rolling hills, sprawling fields, and sun dappled forests swept past as we drove through a 73 degree day around lunchtime. Finally we got to the park, and I was ready for the workout that I knew I was about to get. Honestly, I only had one real moment of concern during our 5 hours on the rocky trails up and down the East bluff. The stairs were so steep, and my legs were feeling the burn, and I seem to only remember my fear of heights when I’m a few feet away from a sheer rocky cliff with a breathtaking view.

But I made it to the top, and over to the Devil’s Doorway. This is where my mood turned a little darker; people were climbing all over these formerly sacred stones. Adam told me a bit about the history of the lake, as well.

According to Wikipedia, “The term, ‘Devil’s Lake’ is a misinterpretation of the Ho-Chunk name Tawacunchukdah or Da-wa-kah-char-gra, which better translates to “Sacred Lake” or “Spirit Lake.”[4]

Earlier, as we were waiting in a line of cars to get in, searching for a spot to park, weaving through throngs of beach-goers and walkers and climbers and waiting in line for a bathroom only to give up and use the extra port-o-johns outside… I realized that this land was too crowded. We learn in school that our ancestors took the land from the natives, misplaced them and took over their homes. But what they don’t seem to get across to elementary aged children, many of whom are pushed to go to church regardless of their interest in spirituality, is that we took everything that was sacred to native people on this land.

This place, once called “Spirit Lake” or “Sacred Lake” was a place for celebrations, and was a place where the spirits could be heard. Once upon a time, these stones may have actually been considered to be spirits or to house them. The doorway could have been not that of the devil, but one to the spirit world – and I can’t even get a decent photo of it because there are multiple tourist children and teenagers scrambling up onto it, through the door, and out on to the precipice that is entirely unsafe and sort of important for a nature photo.

Humans and Nature

I couldn’t get a photo without someone climbing on the structure. =(

Even on the steep trails with rocky outcroppings at Devil’s Lake, I had to carefully crop out the body parts of strangers to take pictures. Along the trail we saw trees growing through glacial boulders that looked as if they had toppled into place, despite being the size of my garden shed or my car. I wanted to photograph everything! Several times I had to stop and wait, or accidentally got someone in the shot, because it was just that damn busy on the trails. We passed large groups of college kids, joggers, and people playing music on speakers rather than in earbuds (so that I had to wait for the birdsong and the quiet buzz of insects to come back). It was honestly heartbreaking.

Still – the natural beauty of this place was more powerful than all of that.

As much as I’d love to have it all to myself, it’s awfully big and people must be coming there to enjoy nature. Many of the passersby were quiet, and seemed almost meditative about their journey up the cardio-torture-stone-steps at the beginning. Along the way I saw the occasional body of someone stretched out on a rock to nap near the edge. Quiet could be had in sporadic bursts, if one was patient enough to be still there. And I had lunch on a rock ledge sheltered by evergreens, munching PB&J while a falcon landed on a treetop 20 feet away and slightly below my feet.

Overall, I have to say that it was a truly beautiful place. Despite all the other humans, the trip was worth it and I can’t wait for our next #DerpkinSquad Adventure!
