E1, S1: Sorry.
I wasn't poor like other kids. I had money. My family was working hard to earn money. I wasn't filthy rich, but nor was i starved poor. I was inbetween.
My mother works at a kimono shop. She designed fabulous clothes. She would always get customers day after day. She was famous, always being the main fashionista in town.
My father worked at a blacksmith. He would forge swords and weapons until his arms felt like snapping into two. In the end, he had to quit due to his health.
There was one family member i've grown attached to. And that was my sister. She didn't have a job, but she would always come back with money in her pockets. She wasn't a thief, i know she wasn't.
Sometimes, when my mother was gone and father was out searching for jobs, she would take care of me. She would cook food, play with me and my dolls and tell stories to me before i went to sleep.
Then, when i turned twelve, a strike in badluck happened.
My mother wasn't earning as much anymore. She was getting old and her designs we're getting dull. It didn't help that a new woman moved in town with the same talent as hers.
She closed the shop, making an excuse of a delivery not arriving. On the third day, she fell ill.
My father, who had no luck in a job, drowned himself in alcohol. He would come out of their room crying and sobbing. Then, after a few minutes, he would start being angry. Thrashing around the house and yelling at everything.
It wasn't a pleasant sight for a twelve-year-old girl to see. My sister would always try and hide me from dad. Knowing if I didn't, I wouldn't recover from it.
Speaking of, my sister went out frequently now that mom isn't working. She would sometimes come back with a bunch of money, sometimes she only came back with a few.
She was a ray of hope in my eyes. Despite our circumstances, she fought.
I was weak. I could never cook without being scared of the fire or the knives. I could never go outside without the fear of someone taking me. I could never make friends without the judgement of what they see in me.
"Sister? When are you coming home?"
"It depends, but say. I'll come back with your favorite!"
"Really?!"
"Yes, yes. So, make sure to take care of mom and dad in the meantime. Okay?"
—
"Im off to sleep!" I said. Blowing out all the lights. I stepped into the doorway before realizing my sister wasn't home. I turned and saw the lights in my parents room is gone already.
I slipped on my slippers and closed the door behind me. Opening the gate door and leaving.
"Sister!" I rang out from the streets. Walking in the dead and empty streets. "Sister, where are you?"
Then, the smell hit me.
I focused my eyes and saw my sister. There was blood everywhere. I wanted to run, but I can't. My sister is there, i need to save her.
But, who could save her, from herself?
She was on top of somebody. Kneeling down as if she was praying. She turned and i saw who she had become.
A demon.
"S-Sister?"
We held in eye contact. Her fangs was bright, her eyes wasn't the familiar, soft ones i knew. She had blood on her kimono and her mouth. Her neck had a axe stuck in the side. Only revealing more grotesque view. It took a minute to realize who she was staring at.
Stupidly, i took a step forward. "Sister!" I call out. Running towards her. She backed away, letting herself trip in the body. "Stay away!" she exclaims. "Stay away Y/N!"
"No!" I said desperately. Almost tripping over myself. Letting the blood of the deceased splat on me.
My sister was kind. She was always smiling. She always turned a blind eye to people who've done her bad things. She would always sing me songs, cook me my favorite meals, tell me stories and play games with me. My sister.
"Y/N! Listen to me!" She says, her hands on me shoulders. Shaking me while trembling herself. "You see this?" she asks, pointing to the axe in her neck. "You need to push this in!"
"NO! no no no! I cant!" I cried, pounding on her chest as she made the request. "I can't! Please! I can't do this! Not to you!"
"You have to! If you don't ill kill more people! Please Y/N!" she frantically replied. Reaching for my hands and placing it on the handle of the weapon. "You're a strong girl, aren't you?"
"Please! No!" I shook my head, trying to remove my hands off. "Sister!"
She knelt on the ground. Cradling me like a child. "I can't do this! Sister please." I cried in her chest.
"Its okay." She hummed. Her voice was nice, and warm as summer. "Sorry, Y/N."
I looked up at her, seeing she was also crying. "I haven't been truthful to you."
"What..?"
"The truth is, i've been a bad person. I always stole from kind people. Im sorry for making you look up to me. I've not exactly been a role model for you."
"Who cares?! I dont want you to be perfect! I just want you to come home!"
"Sorry, Y/N. I think I won't be coming home this time." She says, her tears falling down to my face. "I won't be making your favorite food anymore, or telling stories to you."
Her hands felt cold. Pushing my hands on the handle. "Remember what i said earlier? Take care of mom and dad?"
She looked pained. She was crying. I've never seen my sister cry. She was always so happy.
"So, please Y/N. I want you to take care of them for me from now on."
"NO NO NO PLEASE!" I yelled. Pounding my free hand against hers. I felt my hand being pushed more and more as more blood came down her neck.
"Ah, i wish i could see you grow up and get married." She replied calmly. Feeling herself slowly die.
"Y/N. If you dont let me die, I'll kill more people. You dont want that, do you?" She asks me, patting my back.
I shook my head.
"So then, please."
I slowly started to stop crying. "I dont want to be selfish, but do this last thing for me. Y/N."
I found strength in my arm. Calmly pushing the axe slowly.
I lookes at my sister one last time and found a smile.
The same smile she always had. The one i've grown attached to.
"Y/N. I love you."
The axe met the other side. I clung to her body as much as i could. Taking in what scent i could still smell. Taking in what warmth remained.
"I'm sorry, for making you do this to me."
—
It was raining, that day. I guess even the gods felt bad for what happened.
"Damned you! You cursed us all you child!" Father screamed. Throwing glasses at me.
"You're a disgrace! Such a child as you should be left in front of a doorstep!" He said. Drinking more alcohol.
I hid in my room. Cowering in a corner i found staying hours in. The memory replaying over and over in my mind i barely had a chance to breath. I killed my own sister.
I attended the burial of the person my sister killed. I was so emotional i cried the whole day.
When i turned thirteen. I ran away. I was so sick of everyone that i saw in my town. I packed my things, my clothes, money and a small knife. It took me a second glance at my sister's bracelet before i wore it. I changed my clothes, fixed who i was and left home.
Im sure my sister would support my decision. She would want me to stand back up and continue running. She would want me to continue to be who i am.
I didnt know where i was going, nor where i was. It took me atleast a week to figure out what i was doing.
Strangers offered me kindness, and i payed their kindness tenfold. They would always take me in their homes, and i would pay them, help them around and left. Most didn't want to get paid but i insisted anyways.
"Here, thank you for your kindess."
"No no, its okay. We always have runaway children coming to our area."
"Please sir. Take it."
"As i said, its okay!"
"AND I SAID TAKE IT-"
Soon, it was snowing. I hiked up a mountain top assuming for a place to stay. My legs hadn't ever been this tired, getting more exhausted every step in the thick snow.
"Oi! Shigeru! I found someone!" A voice called. A young and male sounding one.
"Who? Who did you find? Is it brother?"
Before my vision blacked out, i saw two kids. A boy and a girl.
—
I awoke to a warm place. It was a contrast to the cold weather i've been walking on for the past hour.
"She's weird!" A young male says. Poking my cheek. "Hey! Don't do that!" An older one replied, swatting the hand.
I blinked a few times before finding myself in view of a family. "What.."
"Who the heck are all of you?!" I panicked. Backing up to a corner with my legs hugging my chest. "Hey! We should ask you that question!" A girl asked.
"Now now, dont be so mean to our guest." A woman says, appearing out of the kitchen. "My name is Kamado Kie. These are my children."
"Rokuta." A young boy with a weird haircut waves her arms everywhere. "Weirdo! Weirdo!"
"Nezuko." She was the only understanding one, well, i guess second understanding one. She had a patient look on her face.
"Takeo." He looked almost annoyed i was here. Even though he was hiding behind his mother.
"Hanako." A bright girl sprung up and walked towards me with a stick. "So? Who are you? What are you?" she asks, thrusting the end of the stick at my legs.
"And Tanjiro, the oldest." He was the first one to understand my situation. He guarded himself around me to make sure none of his siblings were poking fun at me. "Hey! Dont to that. She might get injured!" He says, pulling his sister and looking at me with a smile. "Hello."
"Explain yourself!" Takeo said, as fierce as he could. "I'm L/N Y/N." i finally said, noticing the air softened. "I'm sorry i made such a commotion." i say.
"Its fine. Besides, what we're you doing out in the cold without any proper clothes?" Mrs. Kamado asked, wiping her hands as the youngsters ran around. "I'm.. a runaway."
For some odd reason, they all stopped. Looking at me like i said im the daughter of some really famous guy.
"You're a runaway?!" Shigeru exclaimed, looking at me before running towards me. "That's so cool! I've never seen anyone from other places before!"
"Dont!-" Tanjiro was about to speak up before realizing it was fine now. I held her sister and let her sit on my lap. "Yes, im from another place."
She began kneading my face like it was dough as their mother talked to me. "Must be hard, huh?"
"Not really, i've met kind people on the way." I say, gently pulling off Shigeru and taking my things. "Where are you going?" Nezuko asked before i could bid farewell.
"Im going out. Thank you for-" "You cant!" Tanjiro replied quickly. Making me stop in my steps. I turned and saw they we're all looking at him too.
"I mean, you can't. Its night time. Maybe you should stay over." Tanjiro rephrases his words. Coughing to hide his embarrasment. "That's right! Brother is right!" Hanako agrees. Nodding along to a word he said.
I looked out, sure enough, the snow was brighter due to the night sky. "Alright then." I said. Dropping my things and pulling out some money. "In turn, i'll pay you and help around." I concluded.
"The money is fine, but you dont need to help around. It will be tough work." Mrs. Kamado shakes her head. "You're taking me for the night, no? I don't wanna be a burden." I replied, not taking no for a answer.
Once she saw my unwavering insist, she gave in. "Perhaps you could play with the kids and help around the kitchen."
"Yay!"
"A new playmate! Tag! your it!"
"Huh?! Already?!"
—
As morning came, i woke up early. I looked around and saw nobody was awake just yet. I decided to leave without telling them. I grabbed a piece of paper and a brush, finding a suitable surface to write.
'Thank you again for letting me stay here. Please take the money once more as a compensation for the extra mouth to feed.
—L/N Y/N.'
I placed the note in my futon and along with a little more money. I wore my clothes as silent as i could and slowly opened the door.
"Where are you going?" A tired, voice said behind me. I turned and saw Tanjiro, looking like a different person due to his morning hair.
"I'm leaving now. I've left some money on my bed, if the one i gave last night wasn't enough." I replied, noticing how he seemed almost asleep. Suddenly, he leaned over and gave me a hug. "Dont go."
He fell asleep after a few seconds, i had to drag his body towards his own futon and laying him gently. "I wish you all the luck in the world." I whisper, kissing his forehead before leaving.
I took a deep breath and began walking. Going in a opposite direction far from the warm and cozy home.
— End of ep 1
