The Sloppy Joe - Patty & Bun, London
The first and only time i had previously been to Patty & Bun was back in February 2013, according to Foursquare. I have tried on numerous occasions to revisit but every time I have been met with queues of at least an hour long. Its quite a small place on James street, not far from Bond Street station but its been VERY popular for the last couple of years with burger enthusiasts. I hadnt had chance to put my review up of when i first visited P&B, but after taking an early lunch there today I had no choice but to get this review up as soon as possible.
The Sloppy Joe is their current special. I have no idea how long its on for, I need to get better with details like this, but i do know its only just become available.
I decided not to go for any extras, im not a fan of either really. I had seen a picture of the burger earlier in the day so i was aware of what to expect, it actually looked like a monster that could be fairly hard to eat whilst remaining any amount of respect for how much of a gentleman i could look like. Basically, shit could get messy.
This burger is what my perfect burger should look like. The fact that it DOES look like that is already half way to becoming famous for me. I like messy burgers; Mother Flipper, Dirty Burger, Meat Liquor. This is one hell of a messy lil thing.
Right, i'll get the boring part out of the way. Brioche bun, we all know my thoughts on that. I would prefer something different but i cant seem to escape it nowadays. Im slowly learning to embrace it, or aybe just put up with it. It doesnt seem like restaurants want to try something different, so I wont let it affect my scoring anymore. The ben held together well, though. Especially with the amount of toppings inside.
Lettuce is about all i can stand as far as salad goes, but i feel this burger doesnt need lettuce at all. Its too sloppy to try to be made to look pretty. Its why i love that Meat Liquor doesnt bother with much salad. But the lettuce isnt the deal breaker in this burger, it didnt bother me too much.
The patty was cooked medium rare, exactly how i like it. P&B are famous for how good their patties are, as I say quite often if the patty isnt great then the burger is an instant fail for me. Even with all the toppings you can still taste the beef and realise its a good quality bit of meat.
Gruyere cheese is something i dont think ive ever had before. Its a sweet tasting cheese with a slightly salty edge to it. Its gooey and thick, exactly how i like my cheese in a burger. When you eat a burger with something other than American cheese you realise how amazing a burger can be by just changing this little factor. The way it mixes with the ketchup and mayo was superb.
Jalapeno Lime mayo is another little invention i had never encountered. It sounds hot, right? It wasnt, but thats fine. It still has an identifiable taste. I would like to try it on its own just to see what its like away from the combination of flavours its put with.
So ive saved the best for last, Oxtail Chilli. Its quite deceiving as its not like your regular chilli you would imagine, its not like chilli con carne. I can only describe it as braising steak that you would have in a stew. The way it looks like pulled pork and falls apart from each other, strands and shavings of ox meat (if thats what its called). But it was magnificent. It could be one of my favourite toppings in a burger, along with pulled pork and candy bacon. The burger was packed so heavily with it that after i had finished it there was heaps of it waiting for me that had fallen out. The Oxtail Chilli was definitely the star of the show and makes this burger exactly what it is.
I have been blessed recently with the amount of amazing burgers ive had in the last couple of months. I also realise how much i have been saying "you NEED to go have this burger NOW", but you really do. I cant give you a list of priorities, but if youre like me and eat burgers about 14 times a week then it wont take long for you to get round to it.
There is a new Patty & Bun in Liverpool Street but im not sure if they do this special, so please check ahead.
