Confession time - I find Miles Wei’s character more interesting that Li Xian’s.

It’s honestly The Double again for me - a female centric narrative about a driven woman with a terrible weak ex and a powerful new dude - and I find myself much more interested in the bad dude than the good one.

OK, before people come for my head, this doesn’t mean I find Peony husband a better person than the Envoy or that I ship him with FL (no thank you!), I just find him more interesting as a character for the same reason that I found Shen Yurong more interesting in The Double (tho in The Double, it was exacerbated by the fact that SYR and Princess Wanning actors gave the best performances in the drama - the mains were great but those two were another level. Here I don’t think Husband is giving a better performance than Envoy.)

You never truly know how Husband would act and which way he’d jump. He’s not the noble main character bound by the narrative restrictions (and censorship restrictions) within a certain path. And that is what makes him interesting to me - the complexity but also the uncertainty. I mean both actual MLs of The Double and Peony have a bit of an edge - Duke Su is dramatic and ruthless and starts out using FL and Envoy is dramatic, standoffish from FL and seemingly corrupt. But it’s a cdrama in this era, not a decade plus ago, we all know every minute they are actually good guys - no, Envoy is not actually corrupt and Duke Su is not actually murder happy - the former is saving the bribes for the people of treasury or w/e, Duke Su only kills death penalty people and both are super super duper loyal to the crown and of course would save the FL if she really needed it.

That makes them great husband material but it removes a lot of the tension I find interesting. No, a character does not need to be dark and/or unhinged for me to find them interesting - I loved 17 in LYF and am loving XXC in The Blossoming Love and those two are utter Boy Scouts - but it is hard to do in such a way they grab me.

Meanwhile secondaries are out there running free of confines of the moral messages which gives them an edge.

In the olden days, you could have MLs which were like this (I am thinking of Glamorous Imperial Concubine - the deliciousness of it was that Kevin Yan started ready willing and able to harm FL for his goals, not to mention all the “proper” historicals - think of Three Kingdoms or Advisors’ Alliance - those were not romantic heroes in traditional sense or a more recent example of Goodbye My Princess or Siege in Fog - except their inability to let FL go it was anything goes for those MLs) but for obvious reasons, this doesn’t happen much any more - the closest we’ve come recently is Kunning and Blossom and I adored both - there a lot of tension was that even after we realized MLs would die for FL, you often had no idea how they’d jump for other reasons and it gave us tension.

(Interesting side note is something like Eternal Brotherhood where even until the last episode, in terms of romance, I could not tell how Xiu would react to Ning - he was a very good person but the tension in the narrative came from his immense damage - every scene between them crackled with whether his feelings would win or his issues - it was constantly his issues but in every scene I kept going…but what if? That’s good acting and writing! But then there was the other tension because what Xiu was dedicated to was brotherhood and his platonic ideal of what a just society should be - which put him on a collision course with the wishes of his heart, and his friends and even the ruler - it gave uncertainty also. That’s a hard balancing act.)

Anyway this is a ramble so I will finish this failed attempt at an essay by saying - if cdrama rules allowed mains more edge and uncertainty, I’d probably be (even) more interested but as is, much as I love the mains, I often end up more drawn to secondaries in terms of interest.

the_most_happy: love how emotional their work can be! they have smut and fluff works, and most of all—which i think the the most delicious one, is the way they write angst <3 I actually made a bunch of fanart for their fics/aus when I was just getting into the fandom :3 They're writing is like going into a spicy sexy emotinal adventure... idk how else to describe it xD my fav fic of theirs... augh so hard to choose... In Loving Memory caught me so off guard (cuz i forgot to read the tags and immediately dived into it the moment i saw their post about it hhhh)

forest_racoon: The fluff and softness and magic in their writing is so good! I love the energy and comedy and seriousness and everything in their writing! it's always so fun to pick up any of their works~ Don't be tricked tho,, the angst they deliver have the same gravity ToT it's just so... augh... I first found them through Plate :( and have reread it several times (please check out their other works too it's all so amazing!!)

devilrin: love how she writes. period. the emotions and the poetic energy of it?? the angst?? so. good. the skk energy in their writing is more mellow(?) it feels more realistic—it's like watching people instead of characters ;w; (very cool how she world builds an entire life outside of her fic for her characters actually, got to witness the behind the scenes first hand myself its pretty insane to me) The fic that ruined me tho is Down to a Sunless Sea (which is so angsty im so--)

themadtree: The energy in their writing is just so amazing. it's very hard to stop mid-way! The dialogue feels very fun and engaging and you really get very attached to the characters because of how energetic and full of life they are. Whimsical is the best word I can think of to describe the reading experience of their work :3 They made a bunch of fun aus; their brain is just so amazing (pirate au and avatar au like broooooo) My favorite is Mors Vincit Omnia (yummy pirate au!)

StarshipDancer: one of the first ao3 writers whose name i decided to remember by heart (which means a lot considering how bad i am with names) because they are my most searched user in ao3 xD The fluff is just so addicting. The sillies and shenanegans are so on point for me, idk it just scratch this itch so perfectly in my brain. I draw a of inspiration from my skk sketches from their works actually :3!! READ EVERYTHING THEY HAVE PLS ITS ALL SO GOOD (you should check the fluff week collection augh) Without Words is one of my most reread ones... I think... I reread a lot of their works tho...

setosdarkness: let's be honest. i think everyone whose dived into ao3 skk just knows her alreayd xD she's such a kween for that, making sure we are so well fed with so much fun skk writing. Her works are so fun to read! Very comedic and has such similar energy to the gag moments and bickering and shenanigans of the anime skk for me idk why. Fanfic idea

Charles & Erik are secretly dating (i'd say that they're really not. Just that they don't advertise it & no one has either connected the dots or just asked them). It's 5 times where the X-Men find Charles / Erik looking at eachother lovingly (or w/ desire) & +1 where they're making out.

1- The X-Men & the Brotherhood team up temporarily (& quite spontaneously) to break out some experimented on mutant children from a facility (for some reason Charles had to go, perhaps it was their first official mission & was there as back up?) & the X-Men find Charles staring at Erik while he's bending some metal.

A lot of the Brotherhood (including Erik) & X-Men end up hurt. Charles convines Erik into letting them stay at the mansion to heal.

2- A few days after the mission Charles is giving a speech / assembly to the students (Abt the Brotherhood perhaps?) & they catch Erik staring intensly at Charles w/ a loving gaze.

3- The X-men enter a kitchen & encounter a delicious smell - Erik is cooking. Erik & Charles are talking with eachother abt smth. Erik is giving his back at charles & using his powers manuver the cooking utensiles. Charles is staring the way his muscles move while he does so.

4- Charles is teaching a class outside - one of using mental powers as they all are somewhat similar (this is a hc of mine, that all powers that are of controling smth function similarly). Erik is looking as he teaches, not paying much focus on the actual lesson / the children but more so just looking at Charles, from not very far away. Most of the children dismiss his attendance as for safety purpuses (bc he can stop any dangers from escalating) they still notice tho.

5- The X-men have something to request from Charles late at night. They go into his office & find Charles & Erik locked in a game of chess. They linger at the door before making their existance known, watching 2 or more turns of their game. They see how while Charles is in his turn - looking at the board & thinking - Erik is staring at him (or his lips). They watch Erik glance down as Charles makes his move & the roles are now switched: Erik is thinking of a next move while Charles observes Erik's face (lips). Eventually they make their presence known & the game is stopped temporarily

+1- Another day (also late at night) the X-Men need Charles' presence for something trivial (I'm thinking of them needing him to break off a discusion abt a board game?). Expecting their professor & Erik to be just playing chess (as they normally do at an hour like this) they barge into his office & instead of them playing chess they're making out, a forgotten game of chess on the table.

Personally I've thought of this fic w/ a movieverse AU (w/o Apocalypse & Dark Phoenix tho) in which everything has been somewhat maintained the same with some tweaks:

1) Raven & Charles treated each other's mutations much better in general - Charles encouraged Raven to use her own skin & she let him stay in her mind w/o overstepping, forming a close thelepathic bond.

2) They didn't end in such bad terms after beach divorce (all of them). They stayed for Charles' recovery but ended up still parting ways (the same mutants as in first class went w the same person they did)

3) No Darwin death & he stayed w/ Charles after beach divorce

4) Angel didn't leave w/ Shaw at the CIA but eventually did w/ Erik to the Brotherhood. The Shaw attack still happened & them going to mansion too (but w Angel)

5) The school wasn't shut down & Charles didn't fall into such a bad depression (the loosing his legs still affected him tho & he still struggled w his alcoholism).

6) Logan still came from the future to convince Raven to not kill Trask but it was much easier. Charles & Erik mended their relationship during this & here is when they begun to date. Erik continued w/ the Brotherood & Charles w/ the school not rlly supporting Erik's ways but they reached a compromise (They didn't). Publicly they still are portrayed as enemies & very much are still somewhat so - even if they're together.

(Erik was still at the pentagon for 10 years. Reason why Charles didn't rescue him sooner was that bc of the school & the Brotherhood the contact between Charles & Raven was practially lost & w/ Erik it was practically non-existant so when eventually they stopped talking he didn't think much of it)

However I do think this idea fits different canons / AUs. If you do actually want to write this idea feel free to ignore anything abt it that you don't like & change the canon it's in (i have however only watched the moveies & X-Men '97).

Personally I'd think it'd be hilarious if the X-men dont really catch on & kinda dislike Erik. So they're really surprised that they're together (this is my fave in cherik fics it's so sad it's not written more tbh).

Myb eventually I'll write this fic myself but rn I don't have the time nor motivation to do so propertly. So I can only hope that someone capable of doing so can get inspired by this post & do it themselves.

- I don’t think I’ve talked abt him a lot but erm he got captured by the legion, didn’t help his squad out when they got tortured + killed one by one, gets carved up like crazy and then rescued but his CO was mad he didn’t do anything so he got demoted (MSgt -> Sgt. Was so close to Lt :3) And then his wife found out he was alive and divorced him. And then the NCR lost his records in CA because of being “declared dead” so he’s lowkey stuck in the Mojave regardless.

- he’s fully incapable of yelling or screaming from his torture and it makes his voice sound kinda gravelly, and it makes him a bit insecure so he lets his face do most of the talking (but he’s perma looking pathetic)

- his whole existence is to be depressing and funny for being depressing.

- surprising literally everyone he works with, he’s extremely knowledgeable w explosives but liek u Would never know because he’s forced to guard cargo for life

- the rangers freak him out, and also piss him off a little but not to the level of hate that East has for them. He just thinks they’re a bit unruly.

Colorado

- he likes comic books bc he can’t read, but he also thinks they’re on the same level as philosophy and might be convinced everything in them is real

- he draws out notes rather than write them, unless the person he’s talking to understands Latin. In which case he’ll provide u w essays.

- piercings and tattoos freak him out so bad, he stares at ppl like toddlers do w anyone who isn’t their parents.

If swordblade was gonna be a proper character, what would his relationship be like with the rest of the cast?

Blizz: Swordblade first meets Blizz at an event that is still canon, so I cant talk about it in detail. Blizz was basically abandoned by the other main boys and was- in the process of having a panic attack and Swordblade talks to him. From that point on, Swordblade notices things like how the other main boys treated Blizz and he becomes his friend in response. A very supportive, very caring friend that matched his energy. And he defends Blizz and tries to help him with his anger issues, social anxiety and honestly was just super supportive. And Blizz adored him back TTuTT They became best friends really quickly. Blizz reminded him of an eevee he heard of that went by the same name.

Dusk: Swordblade hated Dusk. He was appalled about how Dusk ran the eevee box, hated how Dusk treated Miku and Blizz, and actively tried his best to bring justice. To the point where he joined the Greenpaw brotherhood to crumble things from the inside. Dusk on the other hand, really wanted SB to like him, because like- everyone likes him! Why doesn't he like him???

Eve: Eve saw how Swordblade treated Blizz and was very happy that Blizz had a new friend. SB was very nice to her as well and they did hang out a lot too ^^ Lots of banter between the three of them lmao

Vay: Vay hated Swordblade. SB didn't know how to feel about Vay. Vay saw all the attention Blizz was giving Swordblade and got extremely, EXTREMELY angry & jealous. Cause of things that will be very apparent when we look at Blizz and Vay's relationship in the future after all the things that happened between them. Swordblade tries to help the two reconnect. (Keyword, tries) Vay and SB had a lot in common honestly, they both strive for justice and love helping others, but Vay is just a bit more.... well. He views things a bit more like fiction than reality (aka- HE'S DELULU)

Bolt: Honestly never thought of their relationship cause Bolt was a piece of wet cardboard left out to dry on a clothes line when SB was being developed

Flame: Swordblade didn't hang around Flame much due to Flame being distrustful of him. And because SB had a crush on Miku too and it was obvious and Flame didn't want him anywhere near her cause well... SB had the tag and earrings that indicated that he was a Lab eevee. *gasp*

Daisy: SB didn't have much of a relationship with Daisy, and the stuff I can say about their relationship is spoilers for her arc so >w>;

Dawn: Swordblade was part of a friendgroup with Miku, Dawn, and Eevui. (mostly Miku and Eevui) Dawn and him got along great! Tho she had to tech him and Miku a lot of basic things they were not aware of of the world.

Miku: Swordblade had a crush on Miku. He actually knew of her and she knew of him before he got caught. He admired her beauty and her strength when faced with adversity. He also knows what she is running from and wants to help her get away from it. Miku is her normal zany self around him and she tends to drag him into a lot of situations.

Arakawa did research about European culture & historical alchemy mysticism (she jokes about it in the omakes). I think she chose a lot of minor worldbuilding details to "feel" more European than Japanese (to me at least), and it sticks out because the 2003 anime reversed some of them - for example Ed eating dango on a train in episode 10. I don't think you ever see dango or other Japanese snack foods in the manga (though it's been a while since i read, so i'm not sure)

One place in Japanese culture where Christian symbolism *is* pretty prominent is post-Evangelion anime, and that absolutely applies to FMA. I think the Evangelion influence is much more prominent in the 2003 anime than the manga (I had a whole list of possible NGE references in the old anime, i wonder if I could dig that up) -- but one example in manga/Brotherhood is Robert Fludd's Tree of Life woodblock on Ed's Door of Truth-- the same design is prominent in the Evangelion OP. I've also seen it turn up in other anime though (e.g. Black Clover) so idk maybe it's just well-known in Japan?

That said, agreed there's a lot more Christ-figure comparisons to be made with Ed (once again, even moreso in the old anime, like holy shit guys)

And the old anime (more possibly-Christian references & plot) didn't give any of these wounds to Roy. Like, Lust has this whole subplot with Scar, she didn't even fight Roy as far as I remember. So, stigmata? Intentional? Coincidence? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

chapters 13 - 16

- these were some of the most emotional chapters so far for me.

- winry coming to central to fix ed’s arm again and seeing how beat up he was, and realizing that him and al really get in deep shit a lot but won’t tell her, just as she suspected… and also, her telling hughes that ed doesn’t really give her trouble, but more so makes he worry a lot ;;

- the ‘‘argument’‘ between ed and al because al finally expressed his discomfort with his body really got my tears going. all throughout we’ve seen how much ed struggles with the decisions he made in the past and this was kind of a confirmation that al disagrees with them as well. it’s just always so painful seeing the situation they got themselves into out of pure desperation and a wish to regain their family. like why does this shit have to be so tragic ;; also, winry telling al that all they have is each other (fuck).

- i loved when ed and al, once reconciled, laid on the rooftop and reminisced about the old days before everything happened. it gave really nice background support for the characters and made them feel even more compelling.

- experiencing hughes’ death all over again made me cry just as much as when i watched brotherhood… it feels way too real. he doesn’t get that much ‘‘screentime’‘, but it’s impossible to not feel some type of way when he’s killed if anything just because of his wife and daughter, and holy shit the transition to the funeral scene and the scene itself were heartbreaking.

- roy’s moment at hughes’ tomb when he expresses his newly found understanding of the elric brothers’ desire to bring back the dead ;; and then the ‘‘looks like it’s starting to rain’‘ because he feels powerless against the situation. arakawa did that. hands down one of my favorite scenes thus far.

- on a happier note tho, later on when roy decides what his plan is and he asks riza if she’ll help him and she replies that there was no need to ask… the married couple energy is too strong. and also in the extra chapter roy saying ‘‘lieutenant hawkeye may seem tough, but underneath all that, she’s got a gentle heart’‘ >>>> (even if it was only to set up the punchline at the end, it’s still valid)

From what I remember it was set in a dystopian future where magic was fading from the world. Wangxian knew each other but not well and they were not together. LWJ was a shifter, possibly a huli jing and could no longer shift into animal form. WWX had a workshop where he worked with androids and helps give LWJ his animal form back. It seemed like this was very dangerous for them.

For #9, this is super random but it caught my eye - this is almost the exact plot of a Ken Liu short story called "Good Hunting". I'm wondering if the fic in question was sort of a re-telling of that story with Wangxian as the characters?
