I'm probably living in the neolithic since I can only make traditional art but I made fanart of some of my favorite scenes of Spy Wars by @clawedandcute !!!
#too bad the best part of this fic cannot be translated properly with images : Obi-Wan being accused of sleeping with everybody in the galaxy#the Padmé vs Satine fight was Epic I need to represent it better#I did NOT just spend hours studying concept art for Padmé's hairstyles. I wanted inspiration sleep was secondary#if you look closely on the second picture you can notice I don't know how to draw forks. and Anakin's padawan braid coming loose#I still haven't watched Satine's part in Clone Wars so I imagined she came to fight in full medieval princess attire. idk it fitted her#star wars#obi wan kenobi#padmé amidala#anakin skywalker

‘ALL FILMS ARE PERSONAL’: AN ORAL HISTORY OF STAR WARS: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE [x] Queen Amidala’s Throne Room Gown: Iain McCaig: First of all, we were only going to have one costume, and I just kept drawing all these costumes. George finally came up and said, “Well, why don’t we do this. We’ll have her change costumes every time we see her.” And then later, “Oh, my God, I’m making a costume drama!” He was shocked himself to realize that. I remember the only through line I had from the previous films for Padmé was that her mom had that wacky cinnamon-roll hairstyle, which ended up not being so wacky, now that I know it’s from the Hopi Indians, and with a bamboo figure of eight it’s made in a very specific way that they didn’t know when they made the Princess Leia ones, and that’s why it came out looking like cinnamon rolls. I thought, “Okay, well, if this is her mom, maybe her mom’s hair was even crazier.” Right? And that just made a mark on Princess Leia. Of course, I didn’t know that she wouldn’t have remembered her mom. But that was my through line. Every time I would start with Natalie Portman, because I had seen her in The Professional. I counted the years from that to this and realized she was exactly the right age for the queen, and I just kept drawing and drawing and drawing her because I loved her face. George came up to me at one point and said, “Do you know this girl?” And I said, “No, sir, but she’s your queen.” And lo and behold, she was cast shortly after! The one and only time I actually got a casting choice put through. But that face is so strong and so beautiful and so innocent and so powerful, it can support any amount of crazy stuff going on around it. So I would dig through history and different cultures, and I would look for crazy hairstyles that I could jump off of. I think there was a fan one that comes from ancient Egypt, there were all kinds of crazy things. This one, I do remember there was a very powerful upside-down heart shape, and I needed something powerful at the bottom. This design happened right as the idea of “Space Nouveau” took hold. I remember we were searching for that through line for an earlier Star Wars, and I thought, “Well, yeah, it’s handmade, it’s artist-made, so it must be a kind of Space Nouveau.” [Art] Nouveau, as we all know, is inspired by nature and plant forms, and stuff. I used to lie down on the grass at Skywalker Ranch, and draw all the vegetation and come back and turn it into Star Wars costumes. So fresh off of that epiphany, I was doing this costume, and I thought, “Oh, my God, she should have plant forms!” So I put all these seed pods down at the bottom of her costume and colored them up, left them bright for some reason. When George was looking at it, he goes, “Iain, what are those?” You think on your feet, and I went, “Oh, they’re lights, George!” He said, “Oh. Won’t that be kind of heavy, down there at the bottom of the dress?” “Oh, no, they’re very light lights, George!” I quickly called ILM and went, “Help! There are these lights down at the bottom and they’ve gotta be really light and I don’t know how to do this!” Bless their heart, they made one. Trisha Biggar: The throne room [gown] was probably the most complex of the Episode I costumes for the queen. It looks quite simple in terms of shape; in terms of construction it was quite a complex dress to make. It started off being built onto a frame with sort of a canvas undergarment. The whole thing was almost like an upside-down ice cream cone in shape, with lots of panels being reinforced with a thing called crinoline steel, which kept the shape quite rigid. Originally, I was making the dress in velvet. I changed from that and used a red silk. I think it was between 20 and 30 panels, and it took about two months to make. It was quite a long process, because it had to be really precise. There were hanging panels, and the collar — there was a Chinese Imperial feel. The other big influence was Art Nouveau, and you can mix influences. It was a favorite of mine. Now there would be lots of different ways to light it, but then there were less. So it had a great big battery, but you can’t see that, so that was good. [Laughs]

You even wonder to yourself:
"My oh my, Mick sure does design great OCs how does he/she/they do it?"
Well, first of all, you flatter me, and second, todays your lucky day! I'm gonna break down how I designed my latest OC: Star Sapphire! (to the best of my ability) (also under the cut cause it ended up a lil long)
To start, this character isn't one where I can just go ham and do whatever I want. (i mean i could but...) She's a Sapphire, a type of gem we've seen quite a few of in SU canon, and there are some rules of thumb for design here.
When designing a gem of an established type, I try to mimic the body proportions for that gem type from SU as best I can.
Princess-esque dresses are the staple clothing for Sapphires. They also consistently have gloves.
Bangs should cover her eye.
Not only that, but my Cat’s Eye Pearl is supposed to be Star’s Pearl, so they should echo each other, design wise. (honestly it felt a bit like reverse engineering a character design lol)
So my first question is this:
What design elements from C.E. Pearl’s design should Star mimic?
She should have these big shoulder poofs.
Something ear-like, or some otherwise protruding element at the top/sides of the head.
A similar torso design.
For the poofy shoulders I immediately knew I wanted to do this sleeve/glove combo. The “ears” were more difficult. I knew I wanted something there, but repeating the conical buns, or even a more traditional set of buns seemed boring to me. I ended up thinking of East Asian inspired hairstyles like Katara and Toph in that one episode of atla and ran with it.
It ended up feeling very Queen Amidala, so I leaned into the Star Wars vibe for the rest of her outfit.
Then it was time for colour, still taking cues from C.E. Pearl’s design. This is where her design started getting difficult for me. I’m used to working in cute, playful, feminine colour schemes. Lots of pinks and yellows, usually pastels. Star Sapphires, however, are a beautiful dark blue. I did three different colour mock-ups before hitting on what I wanted.
The middle design felt too “Evil Frost Queen” to me so I kinda just tossed it aside. At first I was really set on her having dark hair and skin, (like the design on the right) but I hated the hair board being white.
The final design ended up being more or less the top half of the left design and the bottom half of the right design. Though I did tweak a few colours here and there to add a little more saturation. I thought it had a good balance of light and dark colours.
The only changes while finalizing her design were making the hair board bigger and moving it up a little.
I think she turned out pretty nice. c:
I hope this wasn’t too boring to read.. I’ve never really tried to break down my process like this, so I hope it was interesting to at least one of you guys lol
Thanks for reading

You completely lack any and all critical thinking skills or media literacy.
I bet you think the green light in The Great Gatsby was just green, maybe because F. Scott Fitzgerald liked the color green, but not because it symbolizes the money and wealth Gatsby believes will bring him back to Daisy.
It's fiction--sure, but NOTHING, absolutely nothing is written in a vacuum. Do you know what that means? It means that writers and creators cannot separate themselves from real-world experiences. We are tethered to our own realities and that reality is a constraint within which we create.
If you're so convinced that this is just fiction and it has no deeper meaning, then why have they used a real-life hairstyle on a fictional character? Cornrows are a real hair style.
You can admit that real-life--like Sister's cornrows--influences fiction while in the same breath denounce that real-life influences can exist in fiction? If this truly took place in a galaxy far-far away, without any influence from real life, cornrows wouldn't even exist. They would have developed other culturally significant protective styles for coily hair. Because cornrows communicated who someone is in African societies-- from their tribe to their family to their wealth and religion. And then white people severed this identity by shaving off the braids.
If this took place--truly took place--in a fictional world untouched by our human experiences, there would be no Africa, and there would be no African tribes, and there would be no cornrows to communicate this identity to African tribes.
Yet Sister wears cornrows, a very human and very earth-based hairstyle that is culturally significant to a specific group of people. And Sister is a clone, a people who have cultural and identity elements inspired by the Māori, a Polynesian culture.
They have taken something--cornrows--that communicates a very specific identity and put it on the head of a person--Sister--who is not based off of or a part of that identity--not in real life and not in this fictional galaxy.
Star Wars, like all media, has taken influence from real-life cultures and peoples. You cannot discount the way Mongol culture played a role in Padme Amidala's wardrobe. We cannot ignore the way Korean culture inspired Padme Amidala's makeup looks.
These are things that are true, but when you don't correctly credit the culture and try to pass their traditional attire or hairstyles as "alien" and "exotic," there's a fucking problem. When you mix and match black and brown cultures like they're interchangeable, there's a fucking problem.
You are completely missing the point of Ivy's post. Black and brown people--and their cultures--are not interchangeable. Mixing and melting them together presents a bastardized version of the real-life inspiration. It simultaneously erases and appropriates the cultures being represented. It simply doesn't do justice to the inspiration.
As for your post where you tagged @clonehub and @ollovae3.
Do you think that Japanese people haven't discussed the way Imperial Japanese culture has been appropriated in Star Wars? They have taken the fashion, the makeup, the terms for positions of honor, and even the martial arts forms--all things that are culturally or historically important--and tried to pass them off as "exotic." Just look at how the Neimoidians were portrayed. Japanese and East Asian fans have complained.
When a Black or Brown person calls you out on your racism, let them call you in. Listen and learn. Believe it or not, all white people are racist <- and that's coming from a white Irish girl. We grow up in a societies built around the idea that different groups of humans possess different behavioral traits that correspond to inherited attributes, and that these groups can be divided based on the superiority of one over another. In our societies, there is a white social construct and power base that endeavors to keep the social, political, and economic power of a white majority at the expense of an ethnic or racial minority. This is both current and historical.
We are surrounded by these narratives everyday. It is essential to work to be anti-racist every day. If you aren't, then you are helping to propagate these insidious ideologies and narratives that hurt black and brown people. Anyone who tries to convince themselves that they aren't racist, even by proximity of living in a racist society, is only kidding themselves. I've found that those who protest the most are some of the worst "covert" offenders.
And then the fact that you--however unintentionally--compared Italians getting made fun of for eating pasta to racism?
I'm sorry that rural and Southern Italians faced class-based oppression in their own country. I'm sorry that Italy's pseudo-feudal system of land ownership left a lot of people in poverty. I'm sorry Italian Women faced violence and systemic rape from Italian landowning men, and then later their Anglo foremen. I'm sorry they continued to face class-based oppression as some of the lowest paid workers in the US. I'm sorry they were branded as criminals by the US elite and sorry that laws barred them entry to the country because the US thought the immigrating Italians were too poor. I'm sorry that American Protestants hated Catholics.
Italians were not forcibly sterilized, enslaved, invaded and occupied by a colonial power, stripped of their native language and traditions and religion and land and hair. Italians never had their (culturally significant) hair cut to conform to a white ideal of beauty. Italy was a colonial power. There were Italian slavers. Y'all are over here worshipping Columbus like he didn't commit a genocide. And you're gonna cry about being discriminated against?
Italians faced class-based abuse and gender-based abuse and immigration status-based abuse. Only one of these abuses were exclusive to their ethnicity. Italians have now long been considered a part of the white majority, in the US and globally.
Try some critical thinking for a change.
And don't think we didn't notice how new your blog is. Did you just come on here to harass Ivy and other black and brown fans who are--understandably--upset by this? Did you see EK Johnson's response and think, "I'm gonna go show these people who are upset an opinion they expressly didn't ask for"? Do you think you just had to come defend a white woman from these "unreasonable" black and brown Star Wars fans? Did you think being a reactionary would be a good for your blog numbers?
Okay.
E.K Johnston commissioned an artist to draw Sister, the first canon trans Clone Trooper.
In this artwork, Sister is drawn with cornrows.
At this point, people (Disney specifically) are so fucking willfully ignorant of anything Polynesian. Sister is a Clone Trooper. Which means she’s based on Temuera Morrison. A Māori man.
Cornrows have racial and cultural significance in Black culture. They are specific to Black culture. They’re not Polynesian. They shouldn’t be worn by a Polynesian woman. Black and Polynesian are not interchangeable races. Each are specific and deserve recognition and respect. Using cultural elements interchangeably is disrespectful to both parties and it’s so hurtful.
it’s hurtful to Polynesian fans like myself, who just want representation, and it’s hurtful to Black fans because their cultural identity is constantly stolen as an aesthetic.
This is such bullshit and I’m so fucking sick of it.

Zaha Hadid Design creates table based on Princess Leia's trademark buns
Zaha Hadid Design's Le-a table takes its corkscrew shape from the classic double-bun hairstyle worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars.
Created for pop culture collectable company Leblon Delienne, the table's two straight ends are contrasted by a looping middle, which also provides support for the furniture.
The piece is finished in shiny black glass and carbon fibre, although the table can also be ordered in white, brass or silver finishes.
It's not the first time the studio has drawn inspiration from the Star Wars universe, with late architect Zaha Hadid basing a desk – designed for a Disney event at London's Somerset House in 2016 – on a headdress worn by Queen Amidala.
Although the film franchise might seem like an unusual source of inspiration, Zaha Hadid Design told Dezeen that the studio's style is "perfectly in line with Star Wars pop culture, science fiction, futurist style".
Leblon Delienne specialises in products based around well-known characters and series – everything from Mickey Mouse sculptures to homeware based on Alice in Wonderland's tea party. The brand describes the table as "a perfect fit for most contemporary interiors".
Zaha Hadid Design was set up by the architect in 2006, and has created furniture and homeware in partnership with brands including Alessi, Artemide and Sawaya & Moroni.
Venetian designer Luca Nichetto also found a source of inspiration in the Star Wars universe, creating a Darth Vader-esque table lamp that he named after the villain.
The planets from the sci-fi film series also received their own flags, when art director Scott Kelly created 103 different designs to represent each of them.
