so I was remembering the way I had to start wearing a training bra when I was like. seven or eight. and I hated wearing it so much that I would like hide it at the bottom of my drawer and try to sneak out of the house without it. (I was not allowed to go out without it, my parents were always on me about that.)

and I'd always conceptualized that as me just not liking my body being talked about the way it was now being talked about but sitting here in bed at age 33 I finally was like

wait there are times that I have to be really careful about wearing bras (or really anything that puts any pressure at all on my ribcage, including just well-fitting shirts) because that can cause rib subluxations. also, I regularly dislocate my shoulder while putting on bras.

and now I've got my head in my hands over here, because I swear, part of having chronic illnesses is just constantly recontextualizing your weird childhood behavior!!!

like I used to get in trouble a lot as a kid for sitting scrunched up at the dinner table (like crosslegged or knees pulled up to my chest) and when I went to Mayo to get diagnosed at 17 the doc was like "does she sit all curled up a lot?" and my mother was like "???? yes?????" and it turned out that was a behavior they'd noticed in a lot of kids with POTS because we had such weird blood flow problems.

BACKSTORY

henry had a relatively normal childhood until he was about eight, when his parents got divorced. since then it was a life of celebrating two birthdays, thanksgivings, christmases, y’all get the gist. there was no reconciliation in sight n he absolutely hated it.

on his 16th birthday he was so stressed out because his parents both decided to hold it at the same day, same time bc they were being selfish and terrible. henry was getting really sick of all the conflict and decided to just humor his parents a bit more, at least until he finished high school, and he could finally move away from the mess. so our boy did the classic party switcheroo trope without either parent knowing, not wanting to upset them and cause drama.

little did he know that the rush and anxiety that came with switching from one party to another triggered something in his weird, rare genetics that would allow him to accidentally replicate himself that day. in the midst of it all, he noticed he had been experiencing two events simultaneously, controlling two bodies at once. he was so distraught initially, thinking the stress had driven him crazy, but it was happening, he just couldn’t explain it.

realizing how this could work to his advantage, henry just .... went with it, lmao. and he ended up having a BLAST, the lil shit. he actually managed to pull it off without people freaking out on him, and no beans were spilled.

that is, of course, until their parents’ mutual friends spilled their confused “but i never saw him leave the party how could he have been at yours literally at the same time” beans and got him busted. henry was then forced to demonstrate what he did at the party, leaving them bewildered... and terrified. after all, there had been some controversy regarding mutants and their usage of power, and it turns out, their son had been one all along.

they found out about icarus academy and decided to send him to school there, where he could stay safe and possibly learn to temper his abilities. but it totally backfired, as icarus ended up becoming a space for henry to even practice self-replication. of course, using one’s powers was strictly banned on campus, so this only forced him to perfect his control on replication in order to keep it a secret. he started with two, then three, then ten, and so on.

he learned how to cultivate a hive mind within him and his replicas, so he would be able to control all of them simultaneously, while still being able to function in his original body. he can also absorb and carry information through all of his replicas, which can then become collective information for all bodies. the catch of a hive mind ability, though, is that the singular mind also carries the ability to feel. so when someone touches or hurts henry, be it a replica henry or not, every other body feels it, too. think sense8, only it’s a singular person so there isn’t much conflict wrt thought and reaction.

to this day, his replication record is 72 (!!!) replicas. he’s been in icarus for two years, using and working on his powers the entire time. he’s aware it’s against the rules, but he doesn’t think he would have lasted this long in the academy otherwise.

PERSONALITY

he’s an isfp, which means he’s big on living in the moment with cheerful but quiet enthusiasm. he doesn’t necessarily crave !!!Adventure!!!, but rather, sensory stimulation, so he’ll enjoy anything arts-related. he loves films n would like to create his own one day

he is carly rae’s “cut to the feeling” personified

v v v impulsive and has little to no patience. will knock u tf out if ur an asshole without even thinking!!! but this also applies to ppl he deeply cares about — he will fite for u to the ends of the earth if u ask him. he’s a puppy ok

can get a little mopey sometimes, especially when alone and/or he is reminded of how much the world sucks. he also has the tendency to snap at ppl, but most of the time he doesn’t mean it, he just finds it difficult to collect himself & his emotions. all in all though he’s quite pleasant n agreeable, just don’t piss him off or bring up trickle-down economics

kinda smart but also kinda dumb, he likes talking about ~deep~ stuff he’s not all that capable of discussing. also likely to space out and maybe think about how awesome the “holding out for a hero” sequence in shrek 2 is while discussing homework with someone. he’s also v “what if”-oriented, and sometimes says and does impulsive things simply for the sake of seeing how it plays out

highkey a flirt!!! he tends to crush on ppl quickly and intensely, but the attraction is usually short-lived. loves the chase, rarely ever the reward. don’t indulge him 

all his replicas have the same personality, and he’s really bad at pretending to be someone else so replica or not, it’s still p much him in terms of “authenticity.” he’s an honest guy despite the duplicitous nature of his powers (and, well, the situation at home).
