...
Bucky was friends with a couple of idiots. This was a known fact. They were couple of meat-heads who didn’t care about anything but themselves and their reputation. The only reason he hasn’t ditched them was because they were the only ones who didn’t see him as some god-tier high school cliche.
There were times when he considered them more than acquaintances, mostly when they made him laugh so hard he could feel his sides cramping. But most of the time, they truly tested his patience.
...
Bucky and friends stood idly outside of the school’s entrance. Bucky stood opposite of the two jocks before him, his hands thrust in his pockets and his gaze directed out at the field next to the school. His eyes caught onto a girl sitting beneath a lone tree before one of his friends broke his focus.
“We should bring dogfights back.” chimed one of Bucky’s friends, causing him to bring his attention back to their conversation.
His name was Eli, though the girls just called him “Hercules”. He had a tall surly build. His skin was tanned and his cheeks were dimpled. He drove the girls wild with just wink and he knew it; his inflated ego wafted off of him just as thick as his cologne.
“What the hell is a dogfight?” the other asked, his brows furrowed with confusion.
This one, Jason, had a shorter and slimmer build. His pale skin was dotted with small freckles and his hair was buzzed short. His features consisted of big brown eyes and freckles dotted across his cheeks. Most girls liked to think he was a sweetheart before they actually meet him, and were proved horribly wrong.
“It’s basically a competition to see who can bring the ugliest chick as their date.” Eli replied, a smirk resting on his face. “Shouldn’t be too hard with the dogs we’ve got at this school.”
Bucky chuckled in disbelief and shoved his hands in his pockets, “You guys are really gonna drop that low, huh?” He shook his head, “I’m friends with a bunch of jerks.” He muttered to himself.
“C’mon, Buck, give it a try,” Jason crossed the small space and thrust his arm around his shoulders, “Who knows, maybe we’ll finally find you a girlfriend.”
The added chuckle just made Buck roll his eyes as he shrugged his friend’s arm off of his shoulder. “Think again, dumbass, I’m not participating in one of your cruel jokes.”
His friend just sighed and shoved his own hands into his pockets, “How would this thing work, Eli?”
Eli smirked, “We would all pool money together, and who ever has the ugliest girl with him wins the pot.” He didn’t miss how Bucky perked up at the mention of money being involved. “If you win, you could make that trip you’ve been wanting to, Barnes.”
Bucky cocked his jaw and shifted his gaze back toward the field. He never should’ve told him about his friend out west.
“There’d be no more working at that crappy McDonald’s down the street...” He had a sly smile on his face, as if he was dangling this in front of his face. “I know you hate that job.”
Bucky sighed and bit his lip, letting his mind reel and think it over. His best friend, Steve, had moved out to California near the end of their junior year claiming that he would have better opportunities out there. Bucky tried to argue that fact but he lost, and he’s been working his ass off to save up the money to see him ever since.
Doing this would be low. Really low. But it has been over a year since he had seen his best friend, and at the rate that McDonald’s was paying him, he wouldn’t get to see him for another two. This would be the cheap way out, but at what cost?
“C’mon, Barnes,” coaxed Eli, “Are you in or out?”
Bucky sighed and ran his hand through his hair, knocking around his options in his head for a few more moments before he settled on his answer. “What are the rules?” His voice was hesitant as he could already feel the guilt coiling in his system.
Jason smacked Bucky on his shoulder, nearly knocking him over, “Hell, yeah! I knew you had it in you, man!” He exclaimed.
Eli chuckled slyly, “There are only three rules. Rule number one, you’ve gotta be nice to the girl you bring, or she won’t wanna go with you in first place.”
“Makes sense...” Bucky mumbled. So not only will he be ridiculing an innocent girl based on her looks, but he’ll also be betraying her trust. Great.
“Rule number two,” Eli continued, counting it off on his finger, “You have to buy her a drink. And lastly, in order for her to be judged, you’ve gotta to dance with her. We’ll figure out where we’ll be able to do that later.”
“How much money are we putting into it?” Jason asked.
Eli sighed, “Normally, we would each put in fifty bucks,” he said, rubbing his chin, “but I say we up the pot to about one hundred a piece. What do you think?”
“One hundred...” Bucky grumbled, “That’s my entire pay check, Eli.”
“Do you really think you’ll be able fly to California and back with only one fifty in your wallet, Barnes?” Eli asked, continuing on when Bucky didn’t have a rebuttal, “If you win, you’ll get three hundred, and Jason and I will cover what ever else you need. How does that sound?”
Sometimes, Bucky forgot that his friends really are there for him when he needed them to be. Deep down under their egos and playboy attitudes, there is a little bit of heart in them. It’s one of the few things that Bucky likes about them.
“Fine..” He responded, “I get paid next week. We can do this ‘dogfight’ then.”
“Alight boys!” Eli clapped his hands together, “You have until then to find the ugliest broad you can.”
Bucky couldn’t believe what he was getting himself into.
...
When Bucky finally arrived home, he could only find it in himself to lie down and mull everything over. He wished he could’ve taken a longer shift at work, just so he could distract himself with something.
He felt horrible and he hadn’t even done anything yet.
He thrust his arm over his eyes as he let out a groan, his mind reeling over that afternoon. He can’t believe he’d gotten himself into some sick game that should’ve been left in the time frame it came from.
His thoughts wandered back to the girl he’d seen in the field earlier. He knew her from his English class; a sweet girl she was. He chuckled as he remembered waving at her during lunch that day, it was like she couldn’t believe that he’d seen her. It was cute.
A few moments passed before the idea hit him: She could be his date.
It’s not like he found her particularly ugly, but he knew that she wouldn’t fit his friends’ standard of beauty. It was cruel, but it was the truth. And he’s sure if he explained everything to her, she wouldn’t be too upset...right?
Lord, he hoped not.
He gnawed his bottom lip between his teeth as he dug his phone out of his pocket. It’ll be quick and easy, won’t it? He’ll just explain everything in this little chat, and move on.
With a deep breath, he opened an app on his phone and messaged her before he could change his mind.
bbarnes: Hey
He quickly left his inbox and scrolled through his timeline for a few minutes as he awaited a reply.
(y/n): Hi
He’d planned to jump right to his explanation, but then he started to think...he doesn’t have to skip all of the pleasantries of light conversation. He can afford stalling for few minutes, just so he can get his nerves under control and deliver an explanation in the least hurtful way possible.
Piece of cake.
...
This is harder than he anticipated.
Through the conversation, he’d discovered that she only has one friend...one friend in the entire school. He could only guess what her last group had done to her. He just couldn’t find it in himself to explain the real reason why he’d messaged her.
Firstly, he knew that if he told her what was really going on, she would absolutely decline, and probably block him. Secondly, he didn’t expect her to be so...cool. She was holding up the conversation like a pro, which is the complete opposite of what he was expecting her to do.  He was prepared for awkward, quiet, and bland, and that is not what he got.
He could see himself liking this girl, so it hurt him even more when he thought about what he was about to do to her.
So he merely offered her a spot in his friend group. That’s not too bad, right? Obviously he’ll have to find a way to keep his friends away from her, knowing that they’d blab something to her and chase her away. But for the time being, friendship will have to do.
Steve would not be proud of his actions; Bucky knew that. But at least, by the end of this, Steve’ll be able to tell him that in person.
