kinda wish a more critical take on jotaro's character was hip and happening y'know. obviously we're talking about someone who's gone through a bunch of shit over the course of his life and from a meta perspective it's understandable to sympathize with that, but i don't want that bleeding to in-universe takes on him. i want to see the people around jotaro fed up with his continued self-isolation and how stuck on past he is, even those who know what he's been through and know that he should've gone on with his life already. in canon-compliant takes with jolyne i want to see her be angry even after watching jotaro's discs, and have a hard time trying to give him another chance to grow and be the dad he was too afraid to be. for takes with kakyoin more than anything i want a kakyoin who doesn't coddle jotaro or sympathize with him to a fault and act like a kind of vessel for that meta perspective, i want kakyoin who's ready to punch jotaro in the face when he starts that self-destructive cycle of isolation again to bring him the fuck back to the present. i suppose giving a character like jotaro the comfort that he lacks has it's appeal, but i'd argue it's much more interesting to put him in situations where he's forced to face the kind of hurt his behavior causes to those around him, and take responsibility of those actions
#soda offers you a can#jjba#stone ocean could have honed in on this if it wasn't a shonen manga that focused on the fighting#it shares some of that with stardust crusaders i think where the relationship dynamics had the potential to be very interesting#but there wasn't really any time for that sort of stuff bc there were stand users to fight and showcase#it is a valid focus sure and probably does the series overall a lot of favors? perhaps?#alas im one of those gremlins who loves to see what happens when you place two blorbos in the same enclosure#and force them to have a conversation
