Small Aria battle headcanons until I can do more research to make a big battle meta:
Stealth is the main game for her -- perhaps the most fitting skill for a hunter. She has a maxed out stealth skill, and is good for scouting ahead. It’s likely that she’ll disappear in the heat of battle, only to reappear on the other side of the battlefield to fight her way back to the party. She’s certainly motivated, if not a good team player at times.
She’s also quite a dirty fighter -- anything is fair game to a rogue. Traps are her favored tactic, but she also stuns enemies and tends to coat her blades in poison to weaken them further. Aria’s also the teammate who will use her surroundings to her best advantage, working her way to and utilizing ballistas, cornering opponents between a corner and her swords, even sending her Mabari to shepherd bad guys closer to the Pack. Nothing is fair. Everything is permitted.
Speaking of her ranger skills, that’s another environmental element she can use. Dog is sufficient to herd others towards local fauna she’s tracked, or even into the waiting jaws of her wolf familiars. Other times, she will unleash the pack and disappear in the chaos, only to strike from above in urban settings or stealth and trap her way into catching anyone who has the idea to run from her wolves.
This, of course, assumes her party is staring down a number of enemies. For only a few stragglers, or when stealth is absolutely necessary, Aria is all too happy to demonstrate why Sabrae is fabled for their archers. She doesn’t need to be fancy or clever with a bow in her hand, just draw and shoot like she has since she was a little girl.
#All of this probably means Aria is usually bruised or cut at some point or another for being such an in your face fighter with her daggers.#But having a healer on hand usually helps her stave off scarring or serious injury post-battle.#it proceeds you like a black smoke pall [HEADCANON]#really cut him up girl [ABILITIES]

Things Aria had no idea about until she left her clan
Tranquility
Mabari Worship
Arranged marriages
Pickled eggs as a cure all
What an alieange actually was
Boots. Flats. Heels. Any footwear
Actual real beds that people sleep in
What actually goes on inside of a brothel
#it proceeds you like a black smoke pall [HEADCANON]#She only wants to keep the boots and the Mabari worship she's gotta put a stop to the rest.#What do you mean the rest of you don't have blanket nests that is the COMFIEST shit in an aravel.

I’m pretty sure the shock of learning what being a Grey Warden really is and all of its negative effects are exactly why Aria is upfront with her own potential recruits as a Commander.
'The Wardens hide it because otherwise no one would volunteer.'
Good. Why is that considered a negative? Aria finds it absolutely disgusting that this organization force people to die for them, one way or another, by what she perceives as any deception or force necessary. It's barbaric. It's monstrous. She cannot bring herself to lie to someone else the way she feels lied to. Whatever mystique or secret other nation’s orders might enforce, Aria prefers to bring it all to light whenever someone comes to serve under her. It’s controversial but there’s more method to her alleged madness than simply spitting in the face of her own conscription and its fallout.
You cannot force someone to serve and expect their utmost obedience. You cannot really devote yourself a thing you do not choose. She would rather have those who understand the risks and stay loyal in spite of it to those who are only going to grow bitter and resentful like she became. She’s been trying to escape her position since the Blight kicked off -- and she knows that she’s the weak link for it. There don’t need to be any more of her within the Warden’s ranks. What they need is a united front with nothing to shake them.
Aria agreed to none of this -- and she certainly didn’t agree to obey any traditions or standards set by her seniors. She is not here to play into what is expected, she is here to fix whatever she perceives as broken to make the best of all of this bullshit she never asked for and got saddled with.
#it proceeds you like a black smoke pall [HEADCANON]#Aria is a lot more aware of her faults than her status as a bitter jaded vitriol-fueled gremlin imply.#Anyway she should have bought a summer home in the Anderfels for as often as she's at Weisshaupt answering a summons from her superiors.#Anyway this is why you do not give an angry youth with no idea how to run an organization in a time of peace FREE REIGN.#SHE WILL DO HER OWN THING HER OWN WAY AND GRIND CONVENTION UNDER HER HEEL. TO WHATEVER END THAT MIGHT BRING.

The Inquisition Squad -- or, Aria’s Companions as sorted out by myself and @silvertonguedgod. Featuring a Vashoth abomination, a literal god mysterious maleficar benefactor, and one pissed off elf-blooded apostate.
Yulia - THE MOON. Vashoth. Hedge Mage. Abomination. Yulia is an unholy trinity in the eyes of any proper Andrastian, belonging to a monstrous race, with unholy powers beyond the control of the Chantry, and possessed by a demon from the Fade. For her part, she lacks many of the perceived earmarks of such sacrilege -- quiet, introspective, and driven to survive over bathing in the blood of the pious, the Abomination can make a fine travel companion to those who do not take offense at her mere existence.
Initially the daughter of a Tal-Vashoth mercenary, a less strange Yulia discovered pain at a delicate age. Routinely defiled and dehumanized by her father, the girl endured for years, until her agony and budding magical prowess began to lure whatever lay beyond the Veil closer to her. At fifteen, the victim finally lashed out, cleaving to one of the Demons that promised her power and taking back her life, if forever changed.
No one knows for sure what brought about the slaughter of her father and his men, or what destroyed his stronghold. It was assumed the Tal-Vashoth leader and every other living creature within the place was destroyed -- a tale Yulia is not about to correct. She saved herself. She need not dwell beyond that.
Having been an Abomination longer than she was ever a singular being, there’s a sort of comfort in the arrangement. Yulia been possessed so long that it's ceased to be an Anders and Justice scenario. Both The Girl and The Demon have fairly equal standing in this pale husk. They operate as one being. There is no real identity otherwise. Complete absorption/symbiosis into a single conscience.
Spending the intervening years traveling, cutting deals with the desperate, and quietly observing mainland society from the shadows, Yulia has become a powerful manipulator. Above all else, both Girl and Demon seek to survive, a prospect that Aria quickly capitalized by recruiting Yulia into a world-saving mission. As unsettling as the Vashoth might be, she keeps herself steady, playing long games and trying to bring about the best possible outcome for herself.. and whatever more nefarious schemes people assume her to have.
Has some kind of vaguely defined history with Loki -- Is the only one in the party that knew Dream for what he was without being told. Probably going to become an agent of Fen’Harel and double agent in general to double her chances of survival. Whoever wins this coming war, she will be on their team.
SOON TO BE AN AU ON ANOTHER BLOG OF MINE.
Dream - THE HEIROPHANT. Elf. Hedge Mage. Maleficar. Keeping a great many secrets from present company. No one is entirely sure where he came from or what he’s doing skulking around the outer edges of Skyhold, but the Hero has use of him and keeps him in her inner circle. He’s painfully cryptic, self-centered, and brooding, but keeps to his duties with utmost grace, and can settle into conversations or interactions with near-practiced ease. Should he desire it, he can speak as if he were your oldest and dearest friend, and you’d believe it, for all that he knows.
Unlike certain other mysterious mages, Dream has no pretty cover story. He came from ‘a far off place’ and ‘is here to observe.’ That’s the most anything of this earth can get out of him, and even Aria, his perceived leader, can only shrug when people come to her for answers. Spirits and the like might prove a touch more rattled by him, hinting that he is not what he appears, or is something far worse than his tall dark and handsome appearance implies.
His magical abilities certainly live up to the hype, as the man appears a natural talent with more destructive forces, ready to destroy anything that cross his path. His penchant for blood-magic makes his effortless style in battle all the more chilling. The knife and the power that comes from blood are used far too easily by him. It’s simply unnatural, beyond even the works of the Tevinter Magisters. In addition to this, he has access to some form of magic that toys with the mind, able to impart what he knows to others with little effort. It’s been rumored he’s put it to use driving enemies of the Hero mad, but then, how could you ever prove madness to be a calculated act?
He follows Aria like a shadow, but there’s faint amusement in it. It’s obvious that she is not truly in control of him, but that he instead holds greater power than even the Hero of Ferelden. He is planning something, or biding his time, but it’s obvious that he can do what he wants whenever he wants to -- and there is nothing that could stop him but his own sense of honor and his own admitted desire to ‘be changed’ from whoever he was ‘as a much younger man.
In truth, he is the only recently freed Evanuris, Dirthamen. Having been locked within the Fade for untold generations, the Lord of Secrets returned to a world totally foreign to him, and possesses a singular desire to find the Dread Wolf and repay cruelty with cruelty, see betrayal rewarded with due punishment. Dirthamen himself had made an art form of suffering, and he’s had such a long time to brood within his prison, dreaming of a wolf’s throat between his teeth. Whatever he must do to see Fen’Harel torn apart, he will do it, even if it means refusing the splendor of the world Dream remembers.
Accidentally caught feelings for Loki -- Has no strong feelings on Yulia regardless of what she is. Slowly starts to adjust to the world and with this understanding of it start to try and become a better fit for it.
SOON TO BE AN AU ON ANOTHER BLOG OF MINE
Loki - THE TOWER. Elf-blooded. Former Circle Mage. Maleficar. Son of a Keeper turned Teryn’s son turned Circle Mage turned Apostate turned potential hero. He’s had a hell of a life and comes out all the stronger as a fighter and a manipulator for it. Kinslayer, Apostate, and fairly recent addition to a particularly brutal Dalish clan, all he really wants now is to find his lost children and go from there.
It’s all actually a really neat interpretation on @silvertonguedgod so I highly recommend checking this AU out. He’s also Aria’s stabby murdery only living blood relative. even though both are ignorant to this fact -- the joy of both being raised apart from blood family.
Bonus!
Ras’vilem - THE STAR. Elf-blooded. Apostate. Healer-in training. The youngest of Loki’s children, and the first he has recovered from the clutches of Templars. Having been ostracized for her disfigurement, with a condition that calls to mind Shireen from GOT, and after being violently torn from her family once before, ‘Ras’ is deeply troubled but doing her best. A fragile bird of a girl, she finds herself strengthened by the people that love her and her own carefully cultivated coping methods.
She’s a would-be spirit healer, dedicated to learning the softer aspects of magic to try and do good in this world. Sometimes, it’s very hard to grasp that someone as vengeful and loathing as Loki ever made such a gentle child, but it’s the truth. Ras idolizes her father, as a proper Daddy’s girl -- but Aria is her hero and she hopes to be even half as great someday. Aria, for her part, treasures Ras as if the girl was her own, moreso in most of her verses where she has no children of her own. In the one verse where Aria does have a child by the events of Inquisition, Ras becomes thick as thieves with her daughter Natalie, and they do their best to bring Kieran into their ‘weird kids club.’
If someone is nice and doesn’t bully her or anything, she already loves them. This includes most of Skyhold and especially the ragtag bunch of misfits her father is palling around with. She’s not a companion in her own right, but she hangs around Aria as is, so she’s halfway to being one.

More Companion Verse Headcanons I’m Playing With:
Recruited in Haven, regardless of when the quest is undertaken. Has, according to comments made, been hunting the Warden for some time now. Is generally kind of odd and cryptic unless Nature of the Beast has been completed and the Dalish survive. There’s definite tension otherwise as she appears seemingly out of nowhere to help the party fight off some locals while being fairly off-kilter herself.
Seeking out her lost ... friend... Tamlen. Is willing to join the Warden’s quest to find him, as she heard of an elf matching his description amidst Darkspawn, though this was a while ago. Loyalty quest basically comes down to helping Aria find him and closure in the aftermath.
Starts off awkward and standoffish because she's never really experienced the world outside of her clan, but as things go on becomes fiercely attached to the party and loyal to the Warden depending on choices. Very much comes off as ‘has no idea how to socialize’ with those who are not Dalish, but learns through friendship with the Warden.
Approves of saving the Circle, ending the feud between the Werewolves and Dalish, putting Bhelen on the throne, and other acts of what she perceives as goodness or shrewdness. This balance between approval of ‘what is right’ and ‘what is clever’ means Wardens can usually keep her approval level even unless they go out of their way to be a cockbite -- agreeing to work with the slavers, telling the Werewolves to slaughter the clan, killing Connor, etc.
Doesn’t much care about the plot regarding the throne of Ferelden. Is pretty much in line with Sten like ‘why are we even bothering the Archdemon is in the OPPOSITE direction.’ Won’t care who ends up on the throne so long as she gets to go home afterwards. End-game offers to let the Warden come with her to find her clan, or alternatively will choose travel on with their friend.
Would be romancable for any warden except having to mercy kill her boyfriend or the Warden doing it for her leaves her very much disinterested in relationships for the foreseeable future.

small clan/family headcanons that have been bugging me but not enough for their own posts
Magic runs deeper in Aria’s line than just her father Nodyn -- his own mother was the daughter of another clan’s Keeper. The gift seems to always skip a generation.
Aria isn’t an only child by her people’s standards. After her biomother bolted, Aria was nursed by Fenael’s mother, making the two milk-siblings. In their culture, that’s as binding as blood kinship.
Ashalle isn’t just Aria’s chosen guardian. She was the mutual partner of Aria’s parents, and by rights became the guardian of their child as a sort of third parent. Their clan wasn’t especially fussed about polyamory, especially where certain bloodlines were concerned.
Also, Ashalle has the most embarrassing stories about baby Aria. She did not exactly have the makings of greatness. She once put a bucket on her head and ran headlong into the side of the aravel.
Free range Dalish babies. Kids who are largely left to their own devices once lessons and chores are done. Half of Aria’s resistance is just the standard trappings of running freely across the wilds without any adult supervision. You get tough. You get independent. You get a lot of knicks and bruises that really worry your mom.

no but if the writers are trying to convince us the Dalish sound Welsh then this is totally Aria’s voice claim. She starts off trying to sound more Ferelden around the start of Origins but as her number of fucks dips ever lower the more she drops the act and reverts to her natural accent. By the time of Inquisition she’s just pure ‘Welsh’ and flat outta fucks to give about how it sounds to ‘polite’ company.

i know my end game will always be Aria puts Alistair on the throne but I’ve been musing recently on Aria and Anora interactions and even verses where Aria supports her instead and just.
Aria knowing a woman in power who does not make her want to tear her hair out. It does wonders for her blood pressure, especially given how she regards the like of later leaders by way of Celene and Elthina.
Mutual scowling at Orlesians. For entirely different reasons, sure, but at least someone else has reached that level of disdain.
Aria low-key adopting Anora’s dad as her mentor in a lot of ways. Loghain also came from nothing and ended up pretty well off in the hierarchy of things. Aria wants to learn from that and be inspired by it... certain incidents notwithstanding.
Never letting a certain queen forget about a certain imprisonment incident even as Aria becomes more comfortable around her. The more Anora tries to get her to drop it the more Aria brings it up.
Aria having to apologize on the way to kill the Archdemon for saying Anora looked 50. Even though she’s thirty. Actually you know there’s a lot to apologize for if this alliance is going to work.
Understanding that Anora is only doing what she can for the betterment of her people but also reminding her that the City Elves are her subjects too and how about you show them a little justice and mercy????
Two manipulators getting stuck in a room together and just doing their best to come out on top. In good fun. It’s all a game and the loser owes the winner something when all is said and done.
Aria continually not giving a shit about monarchies or human power structures meaning she’s a top choice to try and let Anora know if she ever fucks up. And she will let her know if she fucks up. Because she cares about her and this awful, awful country.
Aria being known as The Queen’s Hound for her armor and role in the battle of Denerim and you’re a fool to think that arrangement is not the stuff of lewd gossip. There are multiple smut stories written about the Queen and her loyal hound. Aria has yet to find the writers to shank them for comparing her to a dog beneath a shem.

so replaying Aria’s origins has given me hella ideas and headcanons on this pretty Sunday. Follow along with screencaps under the cut.
Aria’s a VISA - Very Important Short-Ass. Just the right size to save Ferelden and punt Genlocks. JK they’re roughly the same size. Not really. But I’m never going to get tired of this angle and never going to stop making it canon.
Fenarel’s the tallest of the clan and Aria is only barely taller than Merrill, thus keeping her from being the shortest. It is known.
Wowee Aria here’d you find all those boxes to stand on???? It’s the little things that give me ideas. Like Fenarel is so deeply offended on Aria’s behalf that I can’t... not... make them as good as family. She’s basically his kid sister even though they’re the same age. He just has that big brother instinct over everyone else from his generation, at least as I see it. He was pretty serious about finding Tamlen, after all, and unlike most wouldn’t walk away when Tamlen’s survival seemed less and less likely.
Who needs a biofather when Paivel is there and already filled with stern fatherly disappointment? No, but I still headcanon that Paivel is her favorite old grump in the clan, and has been since she was a kid. She spent quite a bit of time trying to get him to tell her more stories and teach her more than the other kids ere learning under his tutelage. The arrangement of ‘If you do this busywork I don’t want to do I’ll tell you more about our history’ was great until Marethari had to intervene and tell Paivel to do his own work and stop relying on a child to run his errands.
Plus he has a less gruff center that Aria sometimes manages to bring to the surface. He loves his stupid kids, don’t let him fool you with that stern patriarch aesthetic. He’s hands down the closest thing to a dad Aria ever had in terms of relationship dynamics.
Did I mention everything about this origin hurts?
Aria always had the makings of a ranger #Confirmed. Aria abso-fucking-lutely ended up riding a Halla with Merrill and the Dudes as kids #Confirmed
Ambient chatter from NPCs + this scene has me convinced Aria was something of a cool big sis to the kids in her clan. The boys want to grow up to be like her, or say as such when my completionist ass clicks on them. I’m leaning towards Aria was the fun and supportive type to these kids, with her A+ hunting skills securing her a place as life goals for some of them.
Now here’s something I never noticed before and found interesting. Lingering around the area where I found Ashalle without actually interacting with her will see Ashalle start to make all sorts of grandiose movements -- kind of reminds me of when my Mom and I go ‘full Italian.’ She keeps gesticulating to her ‘audience,’ which is all new to me. I’m not sure if it’s on account of some of the Dalish mods I downloaded, or if I just never caught on before, but this brought on a headcanon.
Maybe Ashalle is some kind of storyteller of her own. The idea that she’s the one that tries to engage the audience where Paivel is a long-suffering purist amuses me -- and puts forth the idea that the dialogue a Dalish Warden can interject into telling the Fall of the Dales comes from Ashalle teaching them the story as a child.
Paivel thinks Ashalle’s stories are full of fluff and talk down to the listener. Ashalle thinks there’s nothing wrong with allowing ones audience to better empathize with a tale. Aria sits and watches the two carry on this discourse war and wonders if they’re going to kiss yet orrrr.....
There isn’t a single blessed thing in Thedas that is as pure as Ashalle. (´;ω;`)
I can just hear some jackass little shit during the meeting of clans trying to piss off a Sabrae kid by saying their clan was first to run away like cowards. And then that kid gets hit so hard in the mouth his great-grandkids are gonna feel it. I’m not saying this might have been one of my Lavellans and Aria herself but y’know.
I just found this an interesting Sabrae fact. It does some good gameplay and story integration for why so many Sabrae characters are running around with bows.
Also helps me to explain why Aria is such a damn good archer in her own right. Her clan is apparently infamous for its sharpshooters. She was raised by the best and in turn became the best.
I’ll do a later write-up wrt Tamlen and Merrill, since both get some interesting reveals and in Merrill’s case foreshadowing in their dialogue, but this is really about all I can milk out of NPCsfrom Aria’s origin.

hc + elvhen language
hc. ll accepting.
When Duncan said he would drag Aria kicking and screaming to Ostagar, the half-dead huntress simply hardened her eyes and recited a piece her people’s creed to him in icy Elvhen. Her place, her people, and her language were here – better to die free than to live in submission to this man’s people. It was a grand gesture, one that future Dalish generations will no doubt make into songs and tales. It will become an iconic use of the phrase ‘never again shall we submit.’
To Duncan, in that moment, staring down an apparent numbskull who was resisting actual life-saving care, it all meant nothing but ‘oh yes, mr. nice warden who is trying to save my life, please conscript me!’ It’s an incredibly misguided translation, but he stood by it.

not fun concepts that have been bugging me in my new playthrough
Aria meeting a Tranquil for the first time and being too horrified to speak because not only do humans do this, but they do it to their own. It’s so foreign to her own understanding of mages and how they are to be treated that she can do nothing but fight against the churning in her stomach and the wetness of her eyes.
Aria having a terrible time in Orzammar and especially the Deep Roads because the last time she was in similar close quarters, it was the beginning of the end. She nearly died in that cave, because of that mirror, and stone above and around her makes her want to do nothing but run as far and as fast as she possibly can.
Aria realizing she’s been played by Flemeth and was too star-struck by meeting Asha’bellanar to realize how convenient Morrigan joining the fight against the Darkspawn was. Her respect blinded her to what was really going on until it was too late to do anything, and swearing never to let it happen again.
Aria entering an alienage for the first time and wondering how her people can be so cruel in how they regard the ‘flat-ears.’ This is not the life she was led to believe the City Elves had, willingly baring their necks to the shemlen and reaping some kind of rewards. There are animals who live better than this in Ferelden.
Aria looking at the state of the world, becoming angry and lashing out against those who made it that way. People taking this as a sign she came from a place of violence and that cuts her deep, that this Is what people infer of the clan that raised her because of her own actions. When she's good and humans like how she acts then she's the exception to elvhen standards. When she acts against their wishes or frightens them with her talk of revolution then she's just like every other Elf.
#long post //#it proceeds you like a black smoke pall [HEADCANON]#fighting in a foreign war [V: ORIGINS]#I'VE HAD A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS STOP ME.#I DIDN'T WANT HER TO SUFFER LIKE THIS.#JUST LET HER GO HOME GOD DAMN IT.
