You Can’t Start a Fire Without a Spark (Ron Speirs x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Night falls in Bavaria to victorious revelry, and at the goading of your friends, the lust you've been kindling in secret suddenly burns hot and wild to the touch.
Note: Female reader, but no other descriptors are used besides the slightest bit of backstory. Inspired by several Bruce Springsteen songs. This is based on the fictional portrayals in the HBO miniseries and not the real individuals. (Also, hi I’m Battie! Let me know what you think🖤) Do not interact if you’re under 18, are a terf or radfem, or post thinspo/ED content.

You weren’t sure how six of you managed to squeeze into a booth together in the Bavarian bar, elbow-to-elbow as you drank beer and shouted over each other. Sitting squished against Talbert, who was squished against Malarkey, one of your legs wasn’t even in the booth. On the other side of the table, Babe, Perconte, and Luz were in the same situation.
Victory in Europe had just been declared. The celebratory feeling filled your lungs with each breath despite the cloud of cigarette smoke that hung over the bar. With the war in Japan still raging on, the likelihood of those without enough points having to endure another drop remained up in the air. One night of fun wouldn’t hurt anybody. No one could say you hadn’t earned it.
Glancing around at your friends, the guys you lived and would’ve died for—even after the war ended, if you were being honest with yourself. You couldn’t imagine being closer with anyone else. Growing up without much of a family, passed around homes of distant relatives and near strangers until you had enough and ventured out on your own as a teen, you’d never had such strong connections before. The only reason you were even allowed to work so closely with Easy Company, was the absence of any next-of-kin, no one to cause a fuss if something went wrong while you were overseas. You were non-combat detail, of course, typing and running errands as needed, but more often than was likely ideal, you found yourself somewhere on the line with the medic training you’d gotten.
You hadn’t been at Toccoa with them, only meeting most of the guys just before D-Day. After Operation Market Garden’s failure in Holland, they came around to you upon the return to Aldbourne, least surprising of whom was Talbert, ever so kindly taking you under his wing when he was recovering from being accidentally stabbed by Smith. The two of you became close friends, and though you heard of his exploits with women in just about every city the company passed through, he seemed hellbent on being your wingman, trying to set you up with at least half a dozen members of Easy to little success.
With the taste of sweet victory and bold German beer on everyone’s lips, declarations of what and who everyone would ideally do to celebrate poured from your friends with little prompting. Knowing you well enough at that point, Tab took the opportunity to get you in on the conversation, the light mood and buzz in your system leaving you more loose-lipped than usual.
“Alright, our company’s eligible bachelorette,” Tab said, conspiratorial mirth in his voice. “Fraternization rules to the dust, which of Easy’s officers would you do your celebrating with?”
Your lips twitched, failing to suppress your smile as your drinking buddies awaited your answer. “Speirs.”
Finishing off the rest of your beer, you stifled your amusement at the clamor that ensued. Undoubtedly the least expected answer, part of Tab’s failure to secure a date for you among his comrades was your infatuation with the legendary captain—closely guarded, until you had a beer or two in you, apparently.
“Speirs?” Babe repeated incredulously.
“No way,” Malarkey said, shaking his head. “No fucking way.”
“They need to get you to one of those headshrinkers,” Perconte said.
“Hold on a minute,” Tab said with an amused smile, trying to reign in the chaos. “Let’s hear her out.”
“You wanna know why?” you asked.
Ever since Speirs stuck with Easy Company after Bastogne, you worked closely with him as you did the other officers, taking notes and keeping memos for them. Speirs often requisitioned you to type up reports for him, finding it easier to dictate what he wanted written to you than typing them himself. Sometimes you found his attention drifting off when it was a more mundane report, his words trailing away while he looked at you, typically slouched on a chair or couch at the end of a long day. You would let yourself take him in, hoping the perceptive man wouldn’t notice the way your eyes trailed up his long, outstretched legs to his disheveled hair.
He provided the most attention to battlefield exploits, and at times you couldn’t keep up with how fast he was speaking or would find yourself a bit startled by some of the gruesome details he relayed. You’d heard the rumors about him. Everyone had. But a disgustingly repressed part of you that’d emerged at some point during the war was secretly thrilled by them, almost hoping they were true.
“Well, you owe us that much,” Luz said.
“I owe you all jack and shit.”
“What if I buy you another drink?”
“I think I’m gonna need another one after hearing this,” Babe muttered.
“Let’s see, why would I sleep with Captain Speirs,” you said, playfully tapping your chin in faux thought. “For starters, he’s fine as hell, which should be reason enough. I like that he’s a no-nonsense kinda guy. He has this intensity that I think is really sexy.”
The cacophony of bewilderment and objection that filled the booth met its slow death when the occupant of the booth behind yours got up. You weren’t sure whether to laugh or cry when you saw it was Speirs.
He made his way out of the pub, your light mood with him.
“Oh my god,” you groaned. “Do you think he heard?”
“No way he didn’t,” Malarkey said.
“Fuck, I need to do something before I get demoted or transferred or something.”
Tab grinned. “Well, if you’re not walking straight tomorrow, we’ll know you did something.”
“Shut up, jerk!” you hissed. “I’m in this mess because of you.”
He gave you a mocking salute.
You flipped him off as you got up from the table, running after your CO who more than likely overheard you expressing to your buddies that you’d enthusiastically have sex with him. Of course it happened the one time you actually joined in on their vulgarity.
Unlike his silent stride, your boots pounded against the pavement, announcing your approach to him.
He turned around abruptly, and you nearly fell over your own feet as you stopped in your tracks.
His intense gaze on you felt like being at the end of his rifle’s sight. “Are you drunk, Y/L/N?”
“No—no, sir.”
“Good. I could use your help with a report.”
You stared at him blankly. A report. At ten o’clock at night. “Of course, sir. Anything you need.”
The corners of his lips upturned for a split second. “I’m sure.” Fuck. He’d definitely heard you.
The two of you started off down the street, toward a more residential area wherein officers had requisitioned houses for the US Army’s use for the foreseeable future. Almost dreamily picturesque, tree branches waved at you in the cool night breeze, the surrounding mountains illuminated by the bright fullness of the moon. From the soft glow of street lamps lighting your way, something you’d previously taken for granted, you tried not to stare at him. In the warm glow of that balmy summer evening, however, he looked almost too good to be true. Hair slightly unkempt, the whisper of stubble along his jaw and cheeks, surely his face would feel like heaven between your thighs.
Soldiers in all states of drunkenness ambled up and down either side of the street, hollering and singing in carefree celebration. Speirs placed a hand on the small of your back, guiding you past a group of men who could hardly walk straight. One of them walked right into you, his head nearly colliding with yours.
“Fuck,” the young soldier grumbled under his breath, shooting you a dirty look for being in his way.
Speirs wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you aside to stand in front of you. “Private,” he snapped, staring down the young man who looked like he was about to shit himself. “I advise you get yourself together and watch where you’re going.”
“Yes, sir—Captain Speirs, sir,” he said, turning his attention to you. “Sorry, ma’am.”
You nodded silently, and the private ran off after his buddies.
Speirs turned to you, his hands on your shoulders as his intense gaze searched your face for any sign of injury.
“Are you alright?” he asked.
“I’m fine.”
In Hagenau, one of the replacements had been pestering you the moment he laid eyes on you. At first, you humored him, supposing he needed a friend, as the men who’d been through Normandy and Bastogne were understandably closed-off and tight knit. Thought the new guys were too green, too eager to do something stupid and get someone killed in pursuit of battlefield glory that was too haunting to exist.
Then he started getting handsy, not enough to be outright inappropriate, but enough to make you uncomfortable. You weren’t sure what possessed you to mention it to Speirs when he’d asked you how you were doing one afternoon. His brow furrowed, he gave you a silent nod in response. The replacement had been transferred elsewhere the following day.
Though Speirs stared right at you, there was something far away in his eyes as he squeezed your shoulders.
“I’m fine, sir,” you repeated. “I promise.”
“Hmm? Oh, right,” he said softly.
He pulled a cigarette from his pocket, not bothering to offer you one. You were in the minority of people who didn’t smoke, allowing you to leverage the packs in your rations to trade amongst the men. As time went on, you’d leave them on top of your finished reports for Speirs, especially if they were Luckys. You watched silently as he lit the cigarette in his mouth, a shining silver lighter in his hand. His eyes drifted from the flame back to you, though you noticed the slightest spark behind them.
The rest of the walk was uneventful until you reached the house. A few stragglers hung around on the street outside, their voices becoming the slightest bit more hushed as they watched you follow Speirs inside. By the time the front door shut, they’d already begun speculating why the two of you were going to his place so late. With the way the men spread gossip, you could hazard a guess as to what the tale would morph into by the morning. You silently bemoaned the prospect of the night hardly being as interesting as whatever they conjured up.
Following him upstairs, the makeshift office seemed especially cramped with the boxes and papers that were haphazardly spread around the place. It’d probably take weeks to sift through it all, especially since a glance at one of the files appeared to be in German. Getting help wouldn’t be the issue, but rather the fact that none of the members of Easy who knew German were particularly inclined toward office work, becoming restless after an hour or so.
A problem for another time, however. Glancing at the clock, it was nearly half past ten, and you were almost inclined to ask Speirs about coffee, depending on how long he expected the report to take. You sat down at the desk, ready to begin typing the date when you noticed the ink was out.
“Is there any typewriter ribbon around, sir?” you asked.
He nodded. “Should be in one of the drawers.”
You opened the drawer immediately to your right, finding a mess of stationary that had clearly been shoved in carelessly. Or maybe someone had taken something out of it in a hurry. Digging through it, you came up empty, and moved onto the drawer below it. No dice. The one to your left didn’t have typewriter ribbon either, at least, you would have been surprised to find it tucked in with the loot that nearly filled the thing to the brim–shining silverware, glistening jewelry, and trinkets that someone with a keener eye than you had clearly decided were valuable enough to keep.
His extensive looting was an open secret, but a glimpse of this treasure trove was a shock to the system. So entranced by the contents of the drawer, you didn’t hear him walk up beside you until his shadow fell over the necklaces and rings you silently coveted.
He gave you a sly smile, wolfish in the dim lighting. “Haven’t had much of a chance to organize those.”
“They’re beautiful,” you whispered in awe, gingerly touching a pearl necklace.
“Try them on.”
“Are you sure?”
“Go ahead.”
You picked up the string of pearls, a nervousness washing over you at holding something so valuable, something of his. Walking over to the window, the nearest reflective surface you could find, you pulled the necklace on, garish against your uniform. You tried shaking off the odd feeling of playing dress-up in front of your commanding officer, a girlish whim he inexplicably allowed you to indulge in. His expression was unreadable when you turned around for him.
“They suit you,” he finally said, brushing his fingers against the pearls, slowly drifting lower to the exposed skin of your decollete. “Keep them.”
It wasn’t uncommon for him to bring you small gifts every now and then—typewriter ribbon, fountain pens, chocolate, trinkets. You knew better than to question where he got them, as he seemed to give them to you at the perfect moment. The stationary supplies when you were running low on them, chocolate and trinkets when you were feeling down. At times they’d be accompanied by notes from him. Usually short, but so sincere you treasured them more than the gifts. Whenever you’d try to thank him, he’d just shrug, almost dismissing the gesture.
This time, feeling bold in the cover of night, you pressed your lips to his cheek, uttering a quiet “thank you.”
He didn’t react. Disappointed, you moved to sit back down at the desk until he grabbed your arm, gently pulling you back to him.
“Were you telling the truth?” he asked, his voice a husky, demanding whisper. “Back at the bar.”
“Yes.”
“So if I said I’ve wanted you in a bad way since Bastogne?”
You kissed him, an explosion of warmth in your chest as you tangled your fingers in his hair. He settled his hands on your hips, squeezing them with a tenderness that betrayed his longing. Parting your lips for him, you allowed him to deepen the kiss, wanting to see how far he’d take it.
Almost overwhelmed by his gentle intensity, you pulled away from his lips, though his mouth chased yours, capturing yet another kiss from you.
“Show me how you want me,” you pleaded with desperate kisses to his face, trailing down to his throat where you could feel the way he groaned in pleasure at your touch.
“In my room,” he managed to say. “I wanna lay you on the bed and–”
“Anything, anything you want, Ron.”
His lips slightly blushed from the ferocity of your kiss, he parted his mouth as if to speak, but instead took your hand firmly in his.
He led you straight down the nondescript hallway that nevertheless left you feeling turned around, dizzied by your desire for him. A door opened, and you were promptly pulled inside the room. The click of the lock behind you sent a slight shiver down your spine.
Pulled into his arms again, you lost yourself in his fervent kiss, until you reached down, palming his hardening cock through his pants. He moaned into your mouth, the sound only exacerbating the heat between your thighs, the ache inside of you that up until that point had been abated by your fingers, always rushed, never satisfying the urge to be filled–by him, preferably. From the way he felt beneath your hand, he could do all of that and more.
And after the months of silently, almost guiltily lusting after him like a nun, he wanted you too. The ego boost emboldened you. “Did you ever think about me when you were alone?” you asked, giving his bulge a gentle squeeze.
“Yes–fuck,” he groaned.
“Like what?”
“Besides keeping me warm in that goddamn forest? This–I thought of this,” he murmured against your lips. “But I didn’t let myself think of a future with you. I couldn’t have survived if I did.”
“And now?”
“I want everything you’ll give me, sweetheart.”
“Lucky you, that’s exactly what I wanna give.”
He smiled slightly, his hands hastily working to unbutton your shirt. “Lucky–except you’re wearing too many clothes.”
You reached for the pearls, about to take them off when he caught your wrist in his hand.
“Leave them on.” His voice was steady, authoritative, the closest he sounded to Speirs since he scolded the private who walked into you earlier.
Weak in the knees, you acquiesced to the one and only order your captain would give you that night. You otherwise undressed, your uniform in a pile at your feet. Your bra and panties were simple, certainly not the sexy lingerie you’d fantasized about seducing Ron in, but his eyes blazed as if your body were hugged by an inviting satin set. A burst of confidence rushed through you, and you held his gaze as you discarded your bra and panties.
You laid back on the bed as he undressed, watching intently until he was down to nothing more than his underwear, his hard cock straining against the fabric. He pulled them off, and you sucked in a breath at how big he was. Erect, at attention for you, all the more intimidating as he approached, joining you on the bed. His daring in the line of fire sure as hell wasn’t compensating for anything.
He straddled your hips, his eyes taking in your naked form with a primal intensity that made your breath catch in your throat. He reached down, two of his fingers circling your clit, your body trembled beneath his touch. By the way he studied how your face contorted in pleasure as a foreign-sounding moan rose from deep in your chest, you could tell it was payback for your teasing him just minutes before.
His fingers shifted, slipping inside your wet core with ease. He pumped them in and out at a steady pace that made your stomach tighten and toes curl, but slowly bringing you closer to orgasm. You bucked your hips when he curled his fingers inside of you, blood rushing in your ears so loud that you could hardly hear the obscene sounds coming from your pussy. A lump formed in your throat, one that made you nearly howl in frustration.
“Who got you this worked up, sweetheart?” he asked, nipping the shell of your ear.
A whimper. “You.”
“What was that?”
“You.” Through a haze of lust-soaked desperation, you took his face in your hands. “Don’t make me beg, Sparky. It’s always been you.”
He pulled his hand from between your legs, and you nearly whined until he slid his length inside your pussy, your walls clenching around his cock. You braced yourself on his shoulder blades, your nails doing a number on him as you dug them into his taut skin while he thrust into you. Carefully at first, almost frustratingly so, until you cried, “More.”
He was bigger than you were used to, even before the war, but the slight discomfort was drowned out by the way his steady, deep thrusts filled you. He ducked his head down, taking one of your breasts in his mouth, his hand groping the other. Sucking on your breast, his teeth grazed your nipple, the hint of pain complimenting the pleasure. Your climax was so close you could see it if you closed your eyes, raw and vulnerable.
“Ron, I’m so close,” you moaned. “Don’t stop.”
He lifted his head, nodding. “Where should I–”
“Inside–fuck–I want you to cum inside me.”
And he did, with an erratic thrust that pushed him deeper inside you still. You kissed him as your pussy milked his cock, lifting your hips to grind against him for the slightest bit of friction to your clit. You threw your head back as you came, an obscene moan escaping your lips as pleasure spread across your body, white-hot like a star in supernova.
His name fell from your lips, laced with curses, over and over like a vulgar prayer. He pressed sloppy, open-mouthed kisses along your decollete, his lips brushing the pearls that stuck to your sweat-sheened skin until he shuddered, bottoming out in you.
He pulled out slowly, his toned chest heaving before he collapsed next to you. Reaching over to the nightstand, he grabbed a pack of cigarettes, silently offering you one. You declined, and he placed one between his lips, using a nearby match to light it before taking you in his arms. You settled comfortably against his chest, closing your eyes for a few moments.
“So, what about that report?” you asked slyly when you’d finally caught your breath.
His quiet laughter rumbled in his chest, and he took a drag from his cigarette, his gaze betraying his adoration as he looked at you. “I might need your help again tomorrow night."
Knowing it was too risky for you to spend the night, he reluctantly let you leave around three in the morning, a slight pout on his face as you took off the pearl necklace and tucked it into your pocket. You left him with a passionate parting kiss, one that he used to nearly convince you to stay just a little bit longer until you quietly promised you’d report to him first thing.
The streets were mostly deserted except for the men on patrol. You kept your head down, booking it back to where you were quartered, hoping your arrival wouldn’t wake anyone up, or at least raise any questions.
Just your luck, you ran right into Tab, a shit-eating grin on his face at your disheveled appearance. “I knew it."

What we know about the upcoming Green Arrow run by Chris Condon and Montos, from interviews with Condon on the Ideas Don’t Bleed and Sheehan Is Dead Comics podcasts:
- Condon grew up reading GL/GA, mentions loving JLU’s take on Ollie. Kin Shriner’s voice is the one he hears when writing him
- wants to go back down to street level, deal with real world problems, “he’s a lefty asshole, that’s who he is to me.”
- aims to harken back to Denny O’Neil’s, Mike Grell’s, Mike W. Barr’s Green Arrow because Ollie “hasn’t been that way in a minute.”
- has read all the way back to Jack Kirby's Silver Age stories, even mentions reading Ollie's Bronze Age backups in Tec. The legacy and history of previous runs are important to him
- says the run is similar in tone to his indie comic with Jacob Phillips, That Texas Blood vol. 3, as well as Mike Grell’s GA run – “very much the vibe of what we’re doing.”
- also specifically mentions the Mike W. Barr, Trevor von Eeden and Dick Giordano GA 1983 miniseries as an influence (minor spoilers for the upcoming run under the cut)—
—which shares a direct connection to Condon and Montos’ run, and is an “integral part” of the story.
I've been trying to stay cautiously optimistic about this run, but ngl I'm completely sold. Between these interviews and reading That Texas Blood (an incredible series in its own right that I can't recommend enough), I think Ollie's in very good hands. All aboard the Condon train, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fave 2024 korean releases
IMPORTANT CAVEAT: I HAVE YET TO LISTEN TO 'AAA' BY HYUKOH x SUNSET ROLLERCOASTER! IT IS NOT ON THIS LIST! I AM WAITING FOR THE RIGHT TIMING! IT IS NOT TIME YET!
on to this year's list:
beautiful world - kimhwol
akin to its album cover, it's best to listen when you are out on a walk. kim hwol's voice cradles you like a beating fire, like a baby bird. while forest child might be the best song of the album, my favorite is the demo track of dear my love with its plinky piano which i find particularly delightful. sparse, basic, but each tracks soars.
yin - colde
i was hesitant to place this here since it's only 3 tracks long but considering it's on my top spotify wrapped, i felt it'd be bias not to give it a place of honor. the background adlib at 3:25 mark in I Color You is laced with cocaine. solid rnb singles, per usual. where is that offonoff album.
dudndudndudn - yujin kim
get on the ground floorrrr. kim yujin is a gorgeous jazz vocalist (listen to her past 2 albums if you haven't) and this EP is rich, bright and her voice is playful and unpretentious. the double track You Love Me / I Love You are so disgustingly cheesy it rounds back to being good. personal fave track is hit me back where it dipped its toe in shoegaze.
orange hour - joyce kwon
have your ever heard an album that is so technically perfect that you get mad? this is that album. i don't even know what else to say.
neom 0541 - BØJEONG
during my first time listening of Unreal, i had to pause and check out if they were a side project of the band The Solutions - they're not. it doesn't mean this release isn't an absolute barn-burner. a concept rock album of landing in a desolate new world, this EP's highlight is Unreal but i implore to stick around for the next track Hyenoid as it hits you with a solo that can melt your face clean right off. check out their latest EP kin as well.
angel interview - meaningful stone, swervy
the latest entry in this list, not even a month old as i am typing this. however, i had a sneaking suspicion this album is going to be an instant shoegaze classic (red car and i open the window instead of the closed door especially) the transition from garage rock esc to house track _()_ is insane.
are you watching at all? - min.a
while i can't say i am a fan of the current epidemic of particularly nasal tiktok singing that's hitting youngsters, min.a is an exception to the rule because she actually has the sauce. by that, her EP thoroughly impresses in its production that i am here for everything she releases from now on. while skipping stones has the play numbers, do not skip on sunshower and petty because they are so cleverly arranged that i don't wanna spoil it.
cool - hyelyn joo
this is a funnnn indie-pop EP with great earworms like Kiss! and Crazy. it's bubbly nature oddly reminds of Lee Jin Ah, albeit steers more safely to the pop side. it's a true crowd pleaser release and each track can be someone's favorite. no on asked but B-Yum is my tongue-in-cheek fave.
the world you live in - ashmute
let it be on the record that everytime they release, it's gonnaaaa be on this list. i prayed for an album from them and my prayers were answered this year. to top it all, it's good and STILL so underrated. Air and Saudade deliver their signature sad sexy bops but surprisingly HARUMADA comes out as the citypop track i didn't know i needed.
honorable mentions:
growing pains - ghost bookstore, miniseries 2 - sumin & slom, play with earth! 03 - wave to earth, "L" - the volunteers, PUMP - epik high, sphere - jooyoung, gimbap - george, entire i & and july - kim kak sung, overtime life - 8호실 peridot, the earth - mrch, bonfire - cifika

One of the big reasons I think that it's always a bit of a bad thing to forget the Endless really aren't human:
Is because, and I admit here that this is from the POV of someone who does most, if not quite all, of my fanfics from a Death-centric perspective flip both because Gaiman did Dream well and like prequel Anakin there is only so much man pain and mangst I can take before wanting to reach through the screen and strangle the son of a bitch. Disliking Dream as a wangsty jackass who is the architect of almost all of his own problems does not mean being blind to how dysfunctional the Endless as a whole are.
Yet at the end of the day Dream is not your pantsfeels, he's the in-universe true architect of fear and maker of all nightmares, the guy who casually sends a woman to Hell because she told him no. He is inhuman and fickle and dangerous for any mortals that cross his path.......and as a being of story he is also bound by story-logic to pursue the path that makes the better story at the expense of multiple logical and even emotional reactions.
And in terms of this Dream is not really so different to the rest of the family. Even Destruction, when he walks off, very much remains an Endless and is still Destruction. He doesn't become human, he doesn't give up his powers and he goes into a long rambling set of justifications on that and believing simultaneously that the Endless interfere too much in human affairs and turns his group of friends into a minefield to ensure he stays hidden. Destruction, in short, is a flaming hypocrite at best and should not be taken as the reliable one true truth. None of the Seven Endless are that.
So what does all this have to do with Death? Simple. She will outlive the universe and Death of the Endless will be a title and a moment in time. Unlike any of the others she did outright completely quit and walked out and where Dream's captivity and Destruction's hippie moment didn't cause immediate unraveling of reality as opposed to the realm Death did. She is unlike the other six in ways that would and do contribute to why there's so much talking past each other.
The other six, even Destruction, all see their natures as intertwined with their functions, spheres, and all that go with them. Every hundred years for a day Death gives up all that power and becomes fully, truly mortal. She takes the step none of the others can bring themselves to do, and in spite of being the one that outlives the universe, she has died the most of all her kin and the DCU being what it is probably more than a few of those deaths were not pleasant ones. And this is without the equally logical assumption based on Overture that we only see the Earth mortal day, that there were and are such days on all worlds, in all forms of life.
And as I've brought this up before, too, Death's little apartment is not her realm. The realm is only glimpsed partially once, in her second miniseries and it looks every bit as dark as a realm called 'sunless lands' would. With the exception of Destruction all the other realms are seen in detail and not just a partial glimpse. Death has that detachment from that realm, which is as much a part of her as she of it.
In short, unlike the rest of her siblings I think Death is if anything in the comics the least truly focused on duty and much as I consider the 'none of them came for me' to be a good example of Dream's self-serving hypocrisy as he'd hate and scorn and react violently to anyone that actually did and Gaiman is repeatedly on record as noting that, I see the 'our purpose is our function' line as a bit of self-serving hypocrisy in the interest of cheering up her brother. Death couldn't and doesn't take dealing with her function or being an Endless well. She walked out, she keeps trying to turn herself mortal, she will one day continue to exist but no longer be an Endless.
Thus in the end, there is a great irony here. Dream is too rigidly bound by duty to ever truly entertain the idea that he could leave and figure out how to do so short of dying. Death is too frantically eager to discard her Endless status to figure out why anyone would, given the choice, choose to remain one even if it hurts them.

He who Dares: Marvel star Charlie Cox on moving to Dublin, gangland crime, and perfecting the accent
The Kin and Daredevil star has played alongside greats such as Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, but he says as an actor you never presume you’ve ‘arrived’
By Niamh Donnelly  March 24, 2023  (X) (X)
Tumblr media
Charlie Cox is on the move. When I Zoom-call the British actor to talk about his role in the latest series of RTÉ drama Kin, he’s in the back of a car, phone camera swaying slightly from the movement of the vehicle. More precisely, he’s in New York being ferried to and from meetings for what he calls “this new show”.
Cryptic. Might he be referring to the much-anticipated Disney+ Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again in which he plays the title role? He might. “We start shooting next week.”
In the run-up, the 40-year-old has been doing “gym work, and stunt work, and accent work, and just brushing up on a lot of the stuff I would have done before,” he says. “It’s been a while since I’ve played the character in his own show, as it were.”
Indeed, Cox played Daredevil in a Netflix series of the same name from 2015 to 2018. But given the licensing saga that followed, he’d be forgiven for thinking he had long since hung up his superhero suit.
Briefly, a clash of contracts between streaming platforms Disney+ and Netflix left some characters caught in the crossfire. Netflix lost the rights to air anything Marvel-related, while Disney was pumping resources into new Marvel projects and pretending the Netflix version of that world and its characters didn’t exist. Daredevil was one such character. Fans were so miffed that their favourite blind New York lawyer turned vigilante crime-fighter was stuck in no man’s land, they launched a #SaveDaredevil campaign.
Tumblr media
Whether for this or reasons pertaining to complex contracts and their expiry, Cox’s hero eventually became the first lead character to cross the threshold from Netflix to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, guest starred in She-Hulk and is soon to be “born again” in his new show.
It must be an extraordinary feeling when people campaign to see you on screen. Did Cox’s world change when he became a Marvel star, and was exposed to its fandom?
“When you play a Marvel character, you do immediately become more recognisable, and the fan base is incredibly enthusiastic and passionate,” he says. “It’s great when the fans feel like what you’re doing is good and they appreciate the character that you’ve created, and the show is successful and well regarded. But equally if that wasn’t to be the case, I’m sure it feels pretty lonely.”
Cox hardly need worry about such things: YouTube is chock-full of glowing reaction videos to Daredevil’s appearance in Spider-Man and the buzz around his new show is strong. But even aside from his Marvel chops, Cox has an impressive CV. From his early appearance in the 2007 fantasy film Stardust to starring in two seasons of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and his leading part in the Netflix spy miniseries Treason, he’s amassed a stellar list of acting credits.
His role as Michael Kinsella in Kin might never have come about were it not for his wife, Samantha Thomas, and her role as executive vice president at Bron Studios which produced the drama along with RTÉ. When Thomas first got Peter McKenna’s script, she showed it to her husband.
“Initially, she just thought I should read it because she was interested to hear what my opinion would be,” he says. “And I read it and I immediately fell in love with it.”
Because a Covid lockdown had hit, the prospect of keeping their family together while the pair worked on the same project made perfect sense. Along with their son and daughter, they set up camp in Dublin.
“And it ended up being a really fantastic decision. We had such a great time. We’ve now spent two seasons in Dublin making the show. [During] the first one, we didn’t get to see much of the city because obviously everyone was in lockdown, and it was all just about working. But this past summer, I really got to experience Dublin in its full glory.”
This included partaking in what now seems a rite of passage for Hollywood stars who come to Dublin: jumping in the Irish Sea.
“I did it almost every day. I absolutely loved it. In fact, during the second season of the show, I actually chose living accommodation near Vico [Baths in Dalkey], so I could walk down every day. And for me, the colder the better. I couldn’t have been happier, waking up and getting in the sea before work.”
Whatever was in the water, it must have worked. The first season of Kin, which saw Cox’s character return from jail and attempt to get his daughter back while becoming embroiled in his family’s gangland feud, broke RTÉ drama streaming records with 2.1 million views.
Peter McKenna, Kin’s co-creator and showrunner has remarked that the cast is “probably the strongest thing about [it].” Cox’s co-stars include Clare Dunne (The Last Duel), Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones, Love/Hate), Emmet J Scanlan (The Fall) and Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Commitments).
What drew him immediately to his role, he says, was the contrast between what we know of Michael and how we perceive him as we follow his story.
“When we meet Michael at the beginning of season one, he’s just coming out of prison. And I felt like it was pretty clear that the man we were meeting was very different from how the family members described or remembered him.
“As an acting exercise, I found that to be quite an interesting challenge: to play someone who has a reputation of being someone you absolutely do not want to cross. There’s a side to him that’s incredibly scary and violent and dangerous, but the man we’re meeting for various reasons is actually in a very vulnerable place and trying to hide that vulnerability from the world.”
Tumblr media
Indeed, this sense of vulnerability or morality is something often Cox brings to his more cut-throat roles, be they an MI6 agent (Treason), an ex-IRA enforcer (Boardwalk Empire), a vigilante crime fighter (Daredevil), or a gangland criminal (Kin).
“I always try to approach any character as if it’s a clean slate. So I’m not knowingly trying to do things in a similar fashion. But I always think that there must be more to [people] than meets the eye. And so often when you’re playing, a ‘good guy’, I think it’s important to make sure that you focus on the qualities he has that aren’t maybe so righteous.
“Similarly, if you’re playing someone who’s got a pretty violent history, it’s also important to see the sides of them that an audience might identify with, where you could easily be friends with one of these guys and not know what they get up to in their business life.”
Cox wasn’t familiar with the Dublin gangland scene before Kin, but as research he listened to episodes of Eamon Dunphy’s podcast The Stand with journalist Nicola Tallant.
“I was kind of blown away,” he says. “What I was reading – what our show is loosely based on – is happening right now. It’s current. It’s not in the past. It’s a real thing. You know, that was a little disconcerting to me at first. I was like, wow, I can’t believe [it] . . . this is ballsy.”
Similarly, Cox didn’t have any particular connection with Dublin before signing up to Kin. All the more impressive, then, that he manages to produce a pitch-perfect accent. How did he master such a notoriously difficult task?
“I have an amazing accent coach – two really fantastic accent coaches, actually,” he says.
The first is Poll Moussoulides, a dialect expert who had worked on Normal People with Daisy Edgar-Jones. The second is Emmet Kirwan, the Irish actor.
“I got in touch with him – I’d seen one of his movies, and I felt like his accent was really good. So, I copied [it]. I had him record a lot of my lines.”
Along with Kirwan, the voice of ex-footballer Shane Supple provided inspiration for Cox.
“Poll found this interview with him, and there was a quality in his voice that I thought would be kind of right for Michael. I would listen to that and try and learn [it] by rote. And then once we started filming, I’d stay in the accent all day while I [was] at work.”
The on-screen Cox might make a convincing Dubliner, but the off-screen one hails from East Sussex. He is the son of Trisha and Andrew (a publisher) and the youngest of five, with one older brother and three much older half-siblings. Acting was something he always enjoyed as an extracurricular activity, but it wasn’t until the end of his schooling that he began to take it more seriously.
“I was doing lead parts in plays and enjoying it more and more. It was during the production of one of those plays when an audience member who worked at LAMDA [The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art] came up to me and suggested I might want to audition for drama school.”
Cox took this advice and tried out for some of Britain’s most prestigious acting courses. He ended up at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, but just a year into his studies was offered a role alongside Al Pacino in the 2004 film adaptation of The Merchant of Venice. Because the school had a policy of not letting students take part in outside productions, he decided to leave and make a start on his career.
Cue a succession of screen and theatre roles alongside the likes of Claire Danes, Steve Buscemi, Michael Caine, Robert De Niro and many more. Were there moments along the way when he really felt he had made it as an actor?
“You know, it’s funny because in retrospect, there have been moments where it just feels like everything’s clicking and you’re getting a lot of the jobs you’re going for, and you’re working back-to-back. But in the moment that it’s happening, I have never really felt that way,” he says.
“On paper, you go on IMDB and you see [Stardust and Boardwalk Empire], and that looks like a really clear trajectory. But in reality, I shot Stardust in 2006. Boardwalk Empire was in 2011.”
Tumblr media
He also points out that his Boardwalk Empire role got bigger as the series continued.
“When I got it, it was a small part. They only offered me three episodes. And if you think about it, I’d been the lead in Stardust which was a big Hollywood movie. And then in 2011, five years later, I’m taking a three-episode arc on a TV show because things had not escalated in the way that I’d hoped they would from being in a movie with Robert De Niro.”
Perhaps owing to this early wobble, or perhaps because of the insecure nature of acting as a career in general, Cox has always had the feeling of “staring down the barrel of looming unemployment – not knowing where the next pay cheque’s going to come from”.
“I have been very fortunate. The phone has always rung, and I’ve always gone back to work. But there have been, you know, long periods in between. I’ve never felt completely confident in the idea that the work will continue to present itself.”
Cox does however, say that he’s learnt a lot from the uncertainty of his career. “It’s a great discipline, because it really [teaches] you – and it took me quite a long time to learn this – [that] you have to really learn to love the job you’re doing in the moment that you’re doing it. And try not to project too far into the future about where you’re going to be this time six months, a year. Because you can ruin the experience of a really amazing job by worrying about what’s coming next.”
Being in the moment is also key to how Cox approaches acting. “A lot of it is instinct, and a lot of it should be instinct, but for your instinct to be well informed is a really good thing. My experience has taught me that you do as much homework as you possibly can, so that when you’re on set you don’t have to think about it. It’s a bit like sports: an athlete [or] a tennis player. You drill, and drill, and drill all your shots so that when you’re in the game, you don’t think about it, you just play them.”
On the topic of sports, Cox is a devoted Arsenal fan. Will his beloved team, now seated at the top of the Premier League table, pull off the win this season?
“I can’t answer that question. It’s too fraught with emotion for me at the moment. All I’ll say it’s a very exciting time, and I hope we can maintain the standard. I believe it’s possible. I’m starting to believe it’s possible.”
Besides, Cox’s busy life doesn’t allow a whole lot of time for fretting over league tables.
“I have a young family. So right now, whenever I’m not working, it’s spending time with my kids and my wife. That’s my priority. I’m really conscious that when I do work, I work really hard. And I love my work. I’m very grateful to have work. But when you are filming something it’s a huge commitment. So it’s really important to me that I don’t want to blink and my kids are going off to college . . . that’s my whole world. They’re my whole world right now.”

What's Hornblower + what's it about? It looks interesting
Tumblr media
Special interest mentioned ong!
Ok! So Hornblower is a miniseries and book series about the British navy from the French Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars (miniseries is only to the middle of the Napoleonic Wars) following the fictional character Horatio Hornblower! :33333 The original series is by C.S. Foster and is 11 books long! This time period is one that I'm not super into but these series is soooo good. I've always had a little interest in naval history so I find it very fun!
All the characters are very likable and there is never a dull moment. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it is a bit like TURN but on the high seas and the characters are more likable. It is also a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean but no magic and no cringe (hooray!), the series is good all the way through! If you like James Norrington from PotC then you will like Hornblower. However, a lot of characters die which is sad, don't get attached. There are a lot of jokes making fun of France which is kinda silly.
I never have seriously kinned a character until now: The protagonist Horatio Hornblower is spectacular. He is a little silly guy little blorbo. He gets into shenanigans (war). The shenanigans seriously make me giggle sometimes. OH OH and he is good at playing the card game whist. :) and he's a little autistic (and we love that), every jokes goes over his head...autism creature incarnate!
I'm not integrated into the fandom quite yet but there is a little one here on Tumblr! I have some posted with the Hornblower tag, at least. Here is a link to the series on Internet Archive is anyone is interested in watching it! :)
This ask made my day thank you. Woah this post is kinda long.

Rules: List ten comfort movies and tag ten people. Or not. I’m not your boss.
Thank you for tagging me @taralkariel! I don’t watch a lot of movies these days, partially because the way our house is set up isn’t really conducive to that, but… I do have some that I think about all the time and bring me joy.
Here are my comfort movies in the order in which I thought of them:
Pride and Prejudice (2005): It’s such a pleasant adaptation. Is the 90s miniseries objectively a better adaptation in terms of closeness to source material? Probably. But this does such an incredibly beautiful job of capturing the essence of the novel and doing some really lovely things with showing the differences in class that exist between impoverished and wealthy gentlepeople which gets missed in a lot of regency romance adaptations.
White Christmas (1954): I love this film. It’s only kind of a Christmas movie, in that it takes place over the Christmas holiday and features the Irving Berlin’s (noted Jewish composer) White Christmas, but let’s face it: it’s really a thin excuse to smash as many completely ridiculous dance numbers together with only the tiniest hint of a plot.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992): Another completely ridiculous Christmas movie that I mostly love because it is probably the most faithful adaptation of A Christmas Carol that exists, even with the muppets. Possibly because of the muppets. I have a long, complicated history with Christmas (as someone who is Jewish; as someone whose mother tried to join cults a few times, and as a result, all holidays are weird; as someone with a lot of family trauma that often came to a head around holidays, both the ones we observed and sometimes especially when we were not observing them), but I found an uneasy détente with Christmas and now observe it in a way that makes sense for me and my (non-Jewish) family. So it seems weird that I have two Christmas movies on this list, but I cannot tell you how many good, fond, wonderful memories I have tied up with this movie. Just thinking about it lowers my blood pressure.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971): Angela Lansbury, my beloved. When I was growing up, we had a VCR and a very small collection of films on VHS, of which this was one. And this is definitely the one that I wore out through watching and rewatching. It’s such a weird, fun, lovely film.
The Birdcage (1996): Robin Williams and Nathan Lane clearly had so much fun making this. It’s a farce and looking at it any deeper than the surface means that the plot falls apart almost immediately, so you cannot take it seriously. And yet, it has such warmth and heart. I love this film, even though it has not aged well; even though it’s imperfect.
Empire Records (1995): What’s with TODAY, today? This came out when I was entering high school and it was the perfect film for that time in my life and it has remained a favorite ever since.
Auntie Mame (1958): Speaking of films that haven’t necessarily aged well, but are fun, hilarious, and heartfelt. Auntie Mame was a book (that also has not aged well) and was adapted to theater and film about making the best of the family you have and creating family from your friends as well as blood kin. My mom showed me this film when I was still in single digits and I knew then that my goal in life was to be Auntie Mame, the original wine aunt. And you know, I’m not doing a half bad job of it.
Galaxy Quest (1999): It’s the best star trek movie. Fight me.
Mystery Men (1999): It’s the best marvel movie. Fight me.
Persuasion (2007): Persuasion is my favorite Austen novel. When I was in high school/college, I was all about that Pride and Prejudice life, but as an adult (and one rapidly approaching middle age), I feel Persuasion to my core. There is something so incredibly human about grieving the life you might have had; of living with regrets and still living your life with as much integrity as you can; of having a terrible family and bearing with them; and of getting second chances that honestly were probably only available because of your lived experience, integrity, and living through that grief. Anne Elliot is my girl (and I’m actively mad about the Netflix adaptation, despite generally being very live and let live about adaptations being adaptations). Why is this one my comfort movie? Because this is the one that captured Anne for me. Sally Hawkins was beautiful casting and she shines with subtle, understated grace. 10/10, would Anne Elliot again.
Tagging (with no pressure whatsoever): @marycontraire, @saritasoyyo, @totchipanda, @capinejghafa, @whatanybodygets, @pyrrhlc, @tlonista, @feelinglikecleopatra; @jackwolfes; @carolinawrenn; @whimperandabang

Comics read this past week:
Marvel Comics:
Captain America (2002) #27-32
These issues were published across June 2004 to October 2004. Issues #27-28 were the storyline “Requiem,” and issues #29-32 were the storyline “Super Patriot.” Issues #27-28 were written by Robert Morales, penciled by Eddie Campbell, inked by Stewart McKenny, and Brian Reber. Issues #29-32 were written by Robert Kirkman, penciled by Scot Eaton, inked by Drew Geraci, and colored by Rob Schwager. Issues #27-31 were 22 pages, and issue #32 was 23 pages.
Reading these issues was just to finish off this series; I didn’t care for any of it. This was my first time reading anything written by Robert Kirkman, most famous for The Walking Dead (2003) and Invincible (2003), and I was surprised that I found his work here to be so terrible. I will say that it impresses me that this book was followed up by Ed Brubaker’s long and well-regarded run writing Captain America.
In issue #27 Steve’s told by a civilian friend, while discussing 9/11, “It’ll probably take an entire new generation of New Yorkers to get over it.” Steve asks in response, “[W]hat generation got over the Holocaust?”
And after a presidential candidate is seemingly killed in a large terrorist attack, Tony tells Steve, “Every day, it’s always 9-11 somewhere,” which I don’t think is true.
Issue #28 introduces an alternate version of Isaiah Bradley. In the main continuity he was the first Captain America, but was badly mistreated by the U.S. government and has been severely limited by brain damage for decades. This other Isaiah was the President of the United States from 2005 to 2013. He explains, “Once I got the Super Serum, I tomcatted for years and gave up on settling down.” And, of Becky Barnes, “My Bucky didn’t die in the war… and he was always cleaning up after my indiscretions. Becky’s my blood kin, but it was Buck that adopted her- after both gave up on my ever finding time for being a proper father.” Bucky died stopping a terrorist during Isaiah’s presidential campaign, and Isaiah says, “I didn’t drop out of the election, and I was less available once I won.” Becky developed serious mental problems after that.
Diamondback is Steve’s love interest in “Super Patriot.” In the end it’s revealed that the Rachel that Steve’s been spending time with isn’t the real Diamondback, but only a “new, improved and advanced life model decoy.” It’s explained, “For all intents and purposes that is Diamondback. Her brain scan was downloaded in such a way that it’s a flawless reproduction. The problem is, they don’t even know they’re not the real thing. When you try to tell them what they are- they get a little dangerous.” This isn’t a new concept at all; Scorpio had an L.M.D. of Nick Fury exactly like that in the 70s. Steve watches, uncomfortable, as the Diamondback L.M.D. is taken away by S.H.I.E.L.D. and begs for his help, but he doesn’t do or say anything in her defense. I thought that this was out of character for him. It specifically made me think of his defense of that Nick Fury L.M.D. in Secret Avengers (2010) #5, in which he cited his friendships with the original Human Torch and the Vision.
Captain America: What Price Glory? (2003) #1-4
These issues were all published in March 2003. All were written by Bruce Jones, penciled by Steve Rude, inked by Mike Royer, and colored by Chris Sotomayor. All were 22 pages.
I thought at first that the art style was clearly Jack Kirby-inspired, but at the same time I did recognize Steve Rube’s work from having read World’s Finest (1999) #1-3, which starred Batman and Superman, characters with no relation to Jack Kirby, so I’m not sure much had to be changed for that effect for this miniseries. Unfortunately, though I hoped this book would be a sort of different-company counterpart to it, I didn’t think the story of this series was nearly as strong as World’s Finest (1999)’s. I did previously enjoy another Captain America story written by Bruce Jones, an 8-page story set during WWII in the anthology Captain America: Red, White and Blue (2002).
There was a lot going on in this miniseries, the first issue in particular felt crammed. I really wasn’t into the themes of this book, about trust and how Steve relates to women, or at least how they were approached in this particular story. Nor was I into what the situations prompted as demonstrations of Steve’s characterization. The plot felt cheap. The artwork was great, and in particular I really liked the fight scenes, which aren’t what I normally am the most into. And I did also enjoy the dialogue in the fight scenes, too.
Captain America (2013) #1-10
These issues were published across November 2012 to August 2013. This was the storyline “Castaway in Dimension Z.” All were written by Rick Remember, and all but issue #9 was penciled by John Romita Jr. Issues #1-4 were inked by Klaus Janson. Issue #5 was inked by Tom Palmer and Scott Hanna. Issues #6 and #10 were inked by Tom Palmer, Klaus Janson, and Scott Hanna. Issues #7-8 were inked by Scott Hanna and Klaus Janson. And the breakdowns of issue #9 were drawn by John Romita Jr. and then were finished by Klaus Janson, Scott Hanna, and Tom Palmer. Issues #1-2 and #10 were 22 pages, issues #3 and #5-9 were 20 pages, and issue #4 was 21 pages.
I skimmed through the first issue of this series back when I finished Ed Brubaker’s run writing Captain America and decided I wasn’t interested that in this run. But now I’m reading it since I’m apparently jumping around Steve’s modern books, while also working my way through his Golden and Silver Age appearances in order. What I’ve previously read that’s written by Rick Remember are the “Descendants” and “Rise of the Descendants” storylines in Secret Avengers (2010), which I enjoyed and are the issues that got me to really pay attention to that book. And also, more relevant to this, he wrote Winter Soldier: The Bitter March (2014), which did a great job of emphasizing how important Steve is to Bucky, but failed to compel me in the other characters original to it.
I can’t see that I’ve read anything drawn by John Romita Jr. before. His art here wasn’t for me, but I do think it’s possible for his style to work better with another character and setting. The only thing I thought he was bad at drawing was children. And Klaus Janson’s name was immediately recognizable to me because he inked a lot of Sal Buscema’s pencils on The Defenders (1972) across 1974 to 1978. Looking up his other credits I see that he drew the “Gothic” storyline across Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight (1989) #6-10, and he also inked The Incredible Hulk (1968) #227, which is a really significant issue to me because it’s the story where the Hulk finally goes to therapy.
Issue #1 opens with portraying Steve’s father as abusive when Steve was a child. I have yet to see that portrayed elsewhere. Mythos: Captain America (2008) #1 depicted Steve as particularly wanting to enlist in the regiment his father served in during WWI, during which he “took a bullet during the push for Soissons.” And Steve says, of his father, “I don’t remember much about him. He laughed a lot, I seem to recall, and smelled of applesauce. He died of influenza in 1926 at the age of thirty-three.” I prefer that more mundane portrayal of Steve’s father.
And in issue #1 Steve says, of Sharon having proposed to him, that it “caught me off-guard. In my day it was the man who asked.” I found this characterization surprising for him, because I would have thought Steve would be past those culture shock moments by now. But maybe he’s covering for a more personal hesitation. Steve then thinks that marriage “might not be so bad. Force me to have a life again. I sometimes forget how to be a normal person. I’ve been a soldier for so long… might be there’s no turning back.” This was also surprising to me because Steve is such a strong-willed person- I would think he would either really want to or really not want to get married, that he wouldn’t waffle like this. And the premise that Steve and Sharon are currently dating but them getting married would somehow drastically change Steve’s lifestyle confuses me.
“Castaway in Dimension Z” is about Steve being trapped in another dimension. In the beginning he escapes from Zola’s lab, along with Zola’s infant son, but then Steve finds himself in another world and he doesn’t know the way back to Zola’s kingdom, which is where the portal back to Earth is. Steve raises the boy as his son, naming him Ian, and they live together in that dystopian world for over a decade until they cross paths with Zola again. In the ensuing events Steve is able to turn Zola’s other child, his daughter Jet Black, over to his side. But Ian is brainwashed into hating Steve and joining Zola. And just as Steve is able to get through to his son, Ian is shot by Sharon. She’s confused by Steve saying that he’s been in that other world for years because from her perspective Steve’s only been gone for 30 minutes, and she thinks that Zola implanted false memories into Steve and Ian wasn’t really his son. In the end Sharon sacrifices herself to save Steve and Jet Black, who end up trapped back on Earth with no way back to Dimension Z and don’t know that Ian is really still alive there.
In issue #4 Steve thinks, “I never intended to raise this boy. But I’m glad to have saved him from Zola. Grateful to have had this time, to watch him grow- to train and teach him. To offer him a different path than the one Zola would have mapped. The boy is hot-tempered, sarcastic and brash. But he is also honest, loyal and tenacious. So there is this to be glad for. If I hadn’t stepped on that train I’d never have the privilege of knowing Ian. I’d have never met my son.” And in issue #5 Steve thinks, “The boy has such heart. I won’t fail him. Trained to be a warrior. But he is still a child- a child in danger because of me. Bucky, Nomad- all the young men I’ve led to battle- this fear’s not the same. Ian is my son- the urge to defend him drives me with a fury unlike anything I’ve known. He will not die today.”
In issue #6 Steve is upset about all the time and experiences on Earth that he’s lost, but thinks, “A decade, Arnim. You’ve taken that piece of my life- time I’ll never get back. And you can have it- but you can’t have him. You can’t have his future. He’s not yours. He might have your genes but he’s my son. He’s good at heart, and he’s strong- you’ll never corrupt him.” And he thinks, “I’m bringing him to Earth. To the normal life he deserves.” Steve phrases that later in issue #7 as that he’s bringing Ian “Home to his piece of the dream I fought so hard for.”
In issue #6 Steve thinks, after finally finding Zola’s kingdom, “The daily cost of survival here- the constant danger- left me numb- but this horror, piles of casually discarded bodies- draws up dark memories of old wars.” And he thinks, “Earth… a distant memory now. Been here longer than the 21st century waiting for me. This place- it’s become my normal. This is the life I lead now. The world I know.”
In a flashback scene in issue #7 to an earlier peaceful time with Ian, before the boy was captured, Steve says of his own father that “He was crushed by the weight of hard times- but he was a good man” and that “He was drinking, escaping what he saw as a hopeless situation the only way he could. Over time he just… disappeared.” And Steve says he’s realized, “I did disappear. Became a slave to an ideal, disappeared into duty. And instead of abusing those I loved… I was entirely unavailable to them. But that’s done- I’m always going to be here for you, Ian.”
In issue #8 Steve tells his brainwashed son, “Raised you with all the love I had…”
In issue #9 Steve, believing Ian to be dead, thinks, “The portal tears open- revealing the blue skies of home. The blue skies I’ll never show my son. All those broken promises I made. Promises about those skies. A blue the atmosphere here never shows. A color that represented a dream to him. In my paintings of home, those blue skies- Ian would often be lost in them. Dreaming of that other place. That place where he would be safe- for the first time in his life.”
Also, Steve’s parenting is contrasted against Zola’s. For example, in issue #10 Zola tells Jet Black, after previously claiming he did everything for his children, “Now you can die with the rest! So much time wasted on you, my daughter! So many failed opportunities to earn your name! I loved you with all my heart- and you chose to side with my greatest enemy! You chose frailty over power! You chose weakness and compassion over the father who gave you life! The father who offered you a world!” When Steve was about to be killed by Ian in issue #8, after raising the boy for years and teaching him his own morals, as opposed to Zolo’s, Steve said, “You don’t have to be a Zola. You can be my son… Choose a name, son. Choose the one that feels right… I’ll die happy if I know it was your choice… for yourself.”
And at the end of issue #10, of them suddenly finding themselves in New York City, Jet Black tells Steve, “And the portal home destroyed. There is no going back. For better or worse… we are stranded here.” I like how this story plays on Steve’s famous experience of being frozen in ice in the 40s and waking up in a future era.
Captain America (1968) #121-123
These issues were published across October 1969 to December 1969. All were written by Stan Lee, penciled by Gene Colan, and inked by Joe Sinnott. All were 20 pages.
In issue #121 a villain is able to walk up to the Avengers Manor and ask to be put in contact with Captain America because “I would like him to appear at a charity performance… at the orphans’ home!” Hank tells him that Steve’s “never yet turned down a bid to do something for youngsters!” And after Steve is contacted, he says, “It was good to hear from the Avengers! I’m going stir crazy with nothing to do!” This stands out because Steve turned down a civilian job as a physical education teacher at a college in the previous issue.
Steve’s monologued about being a man out of time many times before. There’s a new element in his thought process in issue #122, however, where he thinks, “It isn’t hip- to defend the establishment!- Only to tear it down! And, in a world rife with injustice, greed, and endless war- Who’s to say the rebels are wrong? But, I’ve never learned to play by today’s new rules! I’ve spent a lifetime defending the flag- and the law! Perhaps- I should have battled less- and questioned more! Yet, evil comes in many forms- and it isn’t only the young- and the rebellious- who dare fight it!” In the end he decides, of the establishment that he belongs to, “It was that same establishment that gave them a Martin Luther King- a Tolkien- a Mcluhan- and a couple of brothers- named Kennedy! We don’t claim to be perfect- No generation is! All we can do is learn to live with each other- learn to love one another!”
In issue #123 Nick and his agents are taken over by Suprema, a villain with the power to make men obey her commands. Steve says of being attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D., “It’s as though the whole world has suddenly gone mad! Or can it be- everyone else is okay- and I’ve suddenly cracked up!” Rather than it being that his love for Sharon protected him, as I originally assumed, it’s revealed in the end that Steve’s shield prevented him from being hypnotized. It stands out to me that all of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents present for Steve and Nick’s training session (and so were available to be hypnotized) were men. The agents that are the most prominent to me since I haven’t read much of the S.H.I.E.L.D. focused stories are love interests in other books- Natasha in The Avengers (1963) and Sharon in this one- but I understand that they’re unique cases and the organization is probably predominantly male at this point in time.

(English version here.)
The Clearing (S01) - Iniziata per Teresa Palmer e Miranda Otto, mi è piaciuta!
The Chemistry of Death (S01) - Serie tratta dai romanzi di Simon Beckett con protagonista l’antropologo forense David Hunter.
Complimenti all’ottimo cast, Tom Hiddleston su tutti! Lui è veramente fantastico!
The Fall of the House of Usher (S02) - A malincuore devo dire che non mi è piaciuta molto, ho preferito le precedenti serie di Flanagan.
The Gilded Age (S02) - Bella stagione! Sono pronta per la terza!
Slow Horses (S03) - Questa stagione mi è piaciuta molto e aspetto già con ansia la prossima!
Shining Girls (S01) - Non male ma secondo me un pò confusionaria e lenta.
A Murder at the End of the World (S01) - Partita bene si perde un pò nel finale.
Ghosts (BBC) (S01-02-03-04-05) -  Una comedy con personaggi un pò bizzarri ma ai quali ho finito per affezionarmi!

Continuing this post up to episode 7:
Marceline episodes (with Ice King and Bubbline) :

This are all Marcy's episodes, if you just want to keep up with Fionna and Cake I recommend the Stakes miniseries, the ones with Ice King, Bubblegum and Hunson, "Ketchup", and "Obsidian".
Season 1: Episode 12 "Evicted"
The first time we meet Marceline the Vampire Queen she arrives at the treehouse and informs Jake and Finn that it's actually her house.

Finn and Jake are terrified of Marceline, so when they find her yelling at a henchman, Finn decides to take the henchman's place.

Season 2: Episode 26 "Heat Signature"
Marceline has Jake and Finn over to watch a movie with her ghost friends. When they complain about not being able to float, Marcy decides to turn them into vampires.
Season 3: Episode 3 "Memory of a Memory"
Marcy is cast into a sleeping spell that Finn and Jake must save her from! This is the first time we really get to see some of her backstory, including meeting her extremely sh***y ex Ash.
Season 3: Episode 10 "What Was Missing"
Finn, Jake, BMO, Marceline, and Princess Bubblegum must come together and play music as a genuine band in order to open the gate of the Door Lord and retrieve their stolen items.

Finn and Jake are punks and go into Marceline's house while she's gone. When she comes home, they hide in her closet and get more insight into Marcy's life than they ever wanted.
Season 4: Episodes 5 and 6 "Return to the Nightosphere" and "Daddy's Little Monster"
The Nightosphere is quite literally a hellscape that Finn and Jake must navigate, but what the here got them to come in the first place? Oh right, Marcy and her dad are trying to make up.
Season 4: Episode 25 "I Remember You"
Ice King visits Marceline to ask for help in creating a song to attract princesses, but Marceline struggles to deal emotionally with his presence.
Season 5: Episode 14 "Simon & Marcy"
In this flashback episode, we follow toddler Marcy as she and Simon navigate the wreckage of our world. Marcy is little and sick and Simon needs to get her chicken soup. But monsters lurk everywhere and the crown Simon wields makes him act terribly.
Season 5: Episode 29 "The Sky Witch"
Marceline needs Princess Bubblegum's help to get something of hers back from the Sky Witch Maja. The whole episode is filled with delightful Bubbline moments, including Bubblegum making a huge sacrifice to help Marcy get a prized possession back.
Season 5: Episode 38 "Red Starved"
While on a mission for Princess Bubblegum, Marceline, Jake, and Finn get stuck underground by a cave-in. Marcy gets hungry and threatens to eat Jake who also gets hungry and tries to cook Marcy.
Season 5: Episode 48 "Betty"
When the crown's power is stripped away, Ice King becomes Simon again and only wants to say goodbye to his love, Betty. Marceline loves him so much that she makes a major sacrifice and Simon gets a new chance with Betty.
Season 6: Episode 14 "Princess Day"
Marceline and Lumpy Space Princess play pranks on Princess Breakfast because she's a jerk. They debate the nature of good and bad, but really they're just hilarious and judge-y.
Season 7: Episode 2 "Varmints"
Marceline helps Princess Bubblegum keep watch over her new "kingdom" (a pumpkin patch) after Bubblegum is deposed.
Season 7: Episodes 6-13 "Stakes" Parts 1-8
These eight episodes tell Marceline's story about how she became a vampire, how she became a queen, and what happened to the last humans (besides Finn).
Season 8: Episode 1 "Broke His Crown"
Marceline and Princess Bubblegum go to visit the Ice King and end up entering the reality contained in his crown.
Season 9: Episodes 2-9 "Elements"
Things have gotten a bit wonky while Finn and Jake were gone. No one is quite like they were before, but Marceline still loves Princess Bubblegum—and saves her the only way she knows how.
Season 9: Episode 11 "Ketchup"
BMO and Marceline hang out and tell each other stories.
Season 10: Episode 7 "Marcy & Hunson"
Hunson Abadeer returns to Ooo to bond with his daughter Marceline, but will he be able to prove he's changed his soul-sucking ways?
Season 10: Episode 13 "The Ultimate Adventure: Come Along with Me"
Distant lands Episode 2: "Obsidian"
Marceline and Princess Bubblegum journey to the imposing, beautiful Glass Kingdom, and deep into their tumultuous past, to prevent an earthshaking catastrophe.
This is a recopilation of Adventure Time episodes that is recommended to watch before Fionna and Cake (up to date to episode 6). Credits where credit is due, I only put this together, and added the season, episode and description when it wasn't mentined in the original post. Also i modified and added some that I find particularly important. Please don't take this post seriously and remember that Adventure Time makes even filler episodes important down the line. Have fun!
