On Friday, I had a really uplifting and motivating conversation with one of my supervisors, who, upon me asking whether my PhD is coming together the way that it should, said that I am making really good progress and am on the right trajectory. Despite the stresses of it, I am grateful for the ability to work from home. I see this as a tremendous opportunity to focus on my PhD without the interruptions of travel, field work, office conversations, meetings, outings, etc. It has also been a welcome distraction from the current situation across the world. Obviously, it would not be healthy to work every day and on our days off my other half and I have been trying to diverge our focus and energy on ‘stay at home’ activities like gardening, puzzle doing, brunching, baking, painting etc., which is exactly how we spent this weekend. 🍰

It is clear to us that workplace policies and culture can undermine women’s success in STEM fields. The “mom penalty,” for example, is all too familiar to many of us. Now, the global COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing necessary to address it have compounded our concerns about women’s success in scientific disciplines, worsening nearly every disadvantage that women already face.

Preliminary anecdotal evidence suggests that some journals have received fewer submissions from women authors since the start of stay-at-home orders, while submission numbers have increased in other journals for men. While there are ethical and methodological concerns with inferring gender based on names (on which some of these anecdotes may be based), it is unsurprising that there has already been talk about the impacts of the pandemic on the “maternal wall” that limits the advancement of all women in academia.

The impacts on women scientists are by no means uniform. Women scientists of color face even steeper hurdles than white women as they reconcile the increased risk of COVID infection and death in communities of color resulting from structural racism, concerns about racist reactions to precautions such as masking, and increased surveillance and policing in some communities to enforce social distancing, among other challenges. These inequities make clear that there are many steps that scientific institutions and colleagues can and should take now to alleviate the burden and start to address the inevitable inequities that will be exacerbated by this crisis.

The challenges of working as a scientist from home with children is, of course, a tremendous privilege in a world where the pandemic continues to exacerbate long-standing societal inequities, and where many have already lost jobs, health care and loved ones. In addition to the rising death toll of the illness, others have suffered and survived the illness, and many more essential workers risk their lives every day to allow the rest of us to live comfortably and receive care when we need it. We do not want to understate the significant sacrifice that many are now taking to protect all of us.

For those who are able to work from home, women—especially those at early and more vulnerable stages of their careers—are more likely to bear the responsibilities of childcare. Even when parenting tasks are split with a partner, it is widely assumed that mothers are in charge of managing caregiving. Scientific institutions can take steps now to ensure that the careers of their staff can survive the pandemic and thrive when it ends. Parents have figured out short-term solutions to balancing work and family in quarantine, but our demanding schedules are not sustainable. And we risk our long-term physical and mental health in the process.

These are not ideal conditions. We may not be able to work during standard business hours. However, it is also not reasonable to expect that we can work through the night, given that sleep loss is shown to result in reduced work quality and to pose health and safety risks. We are likely to experience decreased productivity. We no longer have the luxury of dedicating working hours to our jobs, as the lines blur between work and home life. We also are required to stay informed on changing emergency measures and to coordinate basic tasks that are now more difficult, such as going to pediatrician’s appointments and the grocery store. These tasks are complicated for everyone right now, and we must help the hardest-hit in the scientific community, especially those particularly at elevated risk in their careers due to this crisis.

For those in early-career positions, including interns and graduate students with educational obligations such as coursework or thesis writing, it is crucial to provide as much certainty as possible that training or degree programs are still viable. This might include extending contracts and funding beyond the original agreement dates. It will also be critical to consider the barriers postdoctorate academics face in obtaining data for their projects; the cancellation of conferences, networking and job interviews; and uncertainty in funding. These issues will affect whether some early-career mothers are able to stay in science or academia. We urge national funding agencies to provide gap funding for graduate students and postdocs who are particularly affected by the current crisis. This would provide a crucial lifeline to our most vulnerable early-career scientists awaiting their next career steps so that they can stay in science or academia.

Department heads, deans and upper administration should also think creatively about ways to facilitate accommodation for their hardest-hit faculty members, often either untenured or not on the tenure track, in the wake of this crisis; this could be in the form of one-semester teaching releases or temporary no-cost release from service or advising responsibilities. The widespread implementation of optional tenure clock stops for pretenure faculty may be a positive development, although it will have negative longer-term consequences such as lower salaries for those who choose to take these accommodations.

Finally, academic leadership should carefully consider how to use student teaching evaluations, as they are susceptible to biases. These are likely to be amplified during the pandemic, when faculty had a matter of days to revise their courses so they could be moved online. Accommodations to help avoid the exacerbation of lasting inequalities are crucial as we recover from this crisis. However, such accommodations should be implemented not only in the wake of the pandemic, but as standard policy for any early-career scientists facing life circumstances that have the potential for long-term career impacts, be these caring for sick family members, pursuing treatment for infertility or facing serious illness or disability (see here, here, here and here).

Nonacademic institutions that support scientists can draw similar lessons. Ensuring that employees who are caregivers are allowed flexibility while not penalizing their career advancement or depriving them of professional opportunities is critical for ensuring that inequities in career potential don’t arise between parents and nonparents.

Some in the scientific community are already stepping up. A recent letter from the Colorado State University Council for Gender Equality on the Faculty to the President and the Office of the Provost asked university leadership to take specific actions to counter the disadvantages sure to face many at the university, if left unaddressed. “Leadership must be thoughtful and intentional,” the letter reads, “even at these early stages of the pandemic, to avoid promoting inequalities as outcomes that could persist for the lifetime of a career.”

Even as governments and communities reopen, challenges will remain. Returning to offices and labs will take time, as children may not return to school or day care on the same schedule. For the youngest children, group day-care settings may remain closed, and some scientists may need to continue working from home. And when elementary, middle or high schools finally reopen with social distancing measures in place, it may also be difficult to collect needed supplies such as face masks, especially for those in places where they are required and children are taught how to properly wear them.

Parents are already thinking about how to prepare our children for new routines that may be very different from what they have previously known. For example, if public schools open in the fall, they may operate on staggered schedules, without recess, to reduce the risk of viral resurgence.

We ask that scientific institutions do everything possible to ensure that all of their employees—parents and nonparents, caregivers and noncaregivers, abled and disabled people—have the tools to succeed, given the new and long-standing hurdles our society faces. Indeed, nonparents also have changed circumstances and many of the current challenges for women scientist mothers have been ongoing hardships of others, such as providing care for extended family members, or working with their own disabilities.

The pandemic has made clear that many of the accommodations that employers are now willing to make could have been made sooner. For years, #DisabledandSTEM advocates asked for the ability to work from home and flexibility of assignments, but met resistance. These are the same accommodations that scientific institutions are now making for all staff.

It is our hope that the empathy and support that have been demonstrated among colleagues during this time extends beyond our immediate crisis situation, and that we don’t fall out of the habit of supporting each other in our personal and professional lives. The pandemic is making it abundantly clear how scientific institutions can make science more inclusive and accessible for everyone, parents or not.

We are thankful for the understanding of our colleagues and students as we navigate the challenges of parenting in a pandemic. Our children have seen us persevere and work hard to stay up on our projects and responsibilities. This is a good life lesson for them. We want them to know the value of hard work and nimbleness. In fact, the ability to shrug off the absurdity of one’s circumstances can boost creativity. It is our hope that we can take the best lessons of doing science from home back into workplaces; we hope the rest of the scientific community will too.

Today, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, SHM Shipcare spoke to some of the most experienced Lady Officers and Chief Engineers as well as the new generation of cadets in the maritime industry in India about their inspirations, challenges, and experiences in this journey.

The women interviewed include Capt. Radhika Menon,the first woman in the world to be honoured by the IMO with the Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, Ms. SuneetiBala, India’s first Lady Chief Engineer, and Ms. Sharvani Mishra, the three founders of the International Women Seafarers Foundation; Chief Engineer Rupali Joshi, 3rd Engineer Bhagyashree Ogale, Ms. Reshma Nilofer, the first Marine Pilot in India, and Ms. Poonam Devangan, former seafarer and recipient of the Varuna Award.

Humble Beginnings

The start of the road was small for women in the shipping industry, with a common love for the sea and ships driving them forward. Some of them were encouraged by their parents who were already in the field, but most were drawn to it because of its novelty and the desire to do something out of the ordinary.

Says Ms. Devangan, “Doing something interesting and different has always excited me. I wanted to enter the Indian Navy, so opting for marine engineering was a natural choice.”

Quite a few officers also chose the maritime industry incidentally. The lack of a proper channel that provides information about the kind of career opportunities the field offers, meant that they had to forge a path for themselves, overcoming challenges at every level.

Overcoming Challenges Along the Way

The principal challenge that all women seafarers had to face is the conservative mentality of the society. We believe that gender discrimination is in its last throes but in shipping, unfortunately, that is far from the case.

For these women, the choice of working in the maritime sector was often met by criticism, discouragement, and sometimes downright disdain. However, they successfully triumphed over these mentalities by constantly motivating themselves to prove that they were no less than their male counterparts.

In colleges, they were often seen as somewhat of an oddity. Being hardly one or two candidates in a class of thirty, the situation sometimes bordered on tragi-comic. On one hand, there was a curiosity to see who these plucky girls were, but on the other hand, they were constantly judged at every step along the way.

During this phase, there were both good and bad experiences. In the initial stages, most of the shipping companies had trouble with the idea of hiring female recruits. This meant that girl cadets were often overlooked, irrespective of their capabilities.

Ms. Sharvani Mishra recounted her own experience during the time of engineering placements. Despite being one of the top five students in her batch, she and her fellow female classmate were never called to company interviews. On talking to their College Principal, they realized that all the companies that had arrived were not even ready to interview female candidates because they were sure they would not be good enough!

The unwavering faith of her teachers, peers and her own confidence in her skills helped her through this. She later successfully sailed with The Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. Her stellar performance encouraged shipping companies to start recruiting female candidates in the upcoming years.

Over time, the industry has gradually come to accept the presence and the value of women in the maritime field and is becoming open-minded about employing them. Students and teachers alike respect the competency of women and are ready to offer advice and help as necessary.

The Shipping Scenario

Post college, the transition to a sailor’s life can be a little overwhelming. However, these women underwent rigorous physical and mental training to vanquish all hurdles that came their way.

Chief Engineer Rupali Joshi told us about the long hours she had to pull during her year-long training at MERI, Mumbai. However, all those then seemingly pointless tasks taught her numerous life lessons which have been useful in many instances through her career. There was an instance when the cargo ship she was plying stopped in a piracy-prone area. Understanding the gravity of the situation, she kept her cool and rapidly directed all the maintenance procedures that had them sailing out of danger in no time.

As a woman officer, you need tremendous mental strength to survive onboard ships. The inherent prejudice notwithstanding, there are many other obstacles one has to face and overcome, to prove yourself. The fundamental problem is the conventional mentality.

Capt. Radhika says, “People on ships always doubt a girl’s capability to perform a task that has been traditionally been done by a man, only because it has always been done by a man!”

“The only way to overcome this prejudice is by proving your mettle and keeping a calm and cool head while performing your tasks. Doing the jobs assigned to you with 100% dedication and perseverance goes a long way in convincing your peers that you know your subject and are serious about your responsibilities,” says Chief Engineer Rupali.

Safety Onboard Ships

One of the most common questions people ask Ms. Reshma Nilofer, the first Lady Marine Pilot in India, is how safe the sea is for women. “It is a common belief that one needs to know swimming and what not to be safe on the ocean”, she says. “However, the current safety regulations and the safety equipment available through dependable manufacturers have ensured that safety is no longer an issue.”

Capt. Radhika demonstrated that not only can women be competent when it comes to ship safety, but can rather go out of the way and take the decisions required to save lives at sea as well. Her daring rescue of seven fishermen earned her the International Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea from the IMO, making her the first woman in the world to do so!

Technology and globalisation have made a marked difference in the tools for communication, though safety equipment is pretty much the same. Automation and the implementation of technology have led to increased alertness and more timely checks. Safety equipment manufacturers like SHM Shipcare have introduced quality personal safety devices that can be used onboard ships. A new software is making it easier to keep track of systems and receive warnings well in time to take preventive measures.

“The one thing that can be done to improve safety on ships is to make the equipment fool-proof”, says Ms. Reshma. “Making people more acquainted with handling and using safety equipment and ensuring that they follow all the do’s and don’ts is a must.”

Given these factors, it is evident that shipping is emerging as a strong career option for young women.

Shipping as a Career for Young Women

Over the past 15 years, shipping has become a potential career option for girls, thanks to the ground-breaking work of these women. There are several different opportunities available for women in the sector today in sailing, safety maintenance, ship engineering, logistics, supply chain management, as technical superintendents, radio officers, surveyors, and many more.

Even after the mandatory sailing duration is over, there a number of ways to stay connected with the marine industry, at port and companies, through onshore jobs.

However, the lack of proper guidance about these opportunities and the various ways in which girls can avail of them leads to lesser number of recruits into the stream. This has been remedied to some extent by the International Women Seafarers Foundation (IWSF), which has been founded by Capt. RadhikaMenon, Ms. SuneetiBala, and Ms. Sharvani Mishra.

Role of the IWSF

The IWSF was created to provide a common platform to bring together all the women in the marine community. The idea is to connect all women seafarers so that the younger generations can benefit from the experience of their seniors and the senior officers are aware of the challenges being faced by the newer recruits.

At the organizational level, the aim of the IWSF is to guide and mentor young women sailors to make their foray into shipping easier. It also works to create awareness within the government and shipping companies about the fundamental policy changes that need to include clauses for women.

There are major gaps between the policies for women and men in shipping at present. As a matter of fact, quite a few companies do not even have provisions for women in the policies. Ms. Bala mentioned an instance where a renowned shipping company did not have a clause providing maternity leave for women. In addition, post their maternity break, women are expected to join at a lower rank than their existing designation. Men, on the other hand, can resume their responsibilities at the same rank after an extended break.

In this context, Bhagyashree Ogale lauds the husbands of women seafarers who support their wives in spite of having a family to look after. She says, “To have a family life, you may have to quit after becoming chief engineer. It is a personal choice though; some women have husbands who have taken a step backwards in their careers to promote the wife’s career.”

The IWSF intends to stand as a recognized entity that can assist the companies to design and implement policies for gender sensitization.

Ms. Suneeti Bala says, “The organization intends to be a primary source of information for young girls and their parents who are desirous of joining the maritime world. There are a lot of rumour-based misconceptions in the minds of the people which prevent girls from venturing into these waters. The IWSF can provide quality counselling and genuine guidance to these aspiring seafarers.”

Bhagyashree, a 3rd Engineer and a seafarer herself, stressed on the positive role of IWSF in the welfare of a woman seafarer. She said, “IWSF plays a crucial role to address problems in the field. It is difficult for one person to bring about a change but the voice of an entity and a group of fellow women seafarers is impactful. IWSF provides a good platform to discuss problems and look for genuine, realistic solutions.”

The Road Ahead

There is tremendous scope for women in shipping, provided the field is given the right exposure. Talking to the women stalwarts of Indian shipping, we see that the future for women in shipping is a bright one.

All across the world, women have ventured into the maritime field. Various organizations like the IWSF and WISTA are coming forward to educate and encourage women to prepare themselves for a future in seafaring and assist them in any problems they might face.

Entering the maritime world is no longer a barrier; surviving in it is a challenge. “Choose your career based on passion, not gender”, advises Ms. Devangan. These women have proved that gender is not an issue when you do your work well. As Ms. Joshi puts it, “The sea does not distinguish between a boy and a girl. Stick to your job, do your work properly, and it can be one of the best careers in the world.”

Amongst all this, it is important to stay humble and self-aware, Ms. Reshma says. “Women can be very sensitive and compassionate, but this cannot take us through life. We need to be tough emotionally. We have the freedom to excel and prove ourselves in every field. The only way to do this is to keep becoming a better version of yourself.”

I Spent A Month Living With An Amazonian Tribe At 23, And It Changed My Career Forever: In 2000, I was working as an IT consultant in Sydney, Australia, and using some of my earnings to backpack around Southeast Asia. During a hike in the mountains in Northern Laos, I stumbled upon an Akha village and was invited to stay for a week. It was an amazing experience, and by the time I got home I was already determined to go deeper. For the next few months, I researched other opportunities to spent time in remote communities, and eventually I connected with FUNAI, Brazil's governing body for indigenous peoples. After many conversations with officials, I managed to secure permission to organize a solo trip to a remote area of the Upper Amazon Basin. Later that year I found myself on a flight to Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, to meet with a local representative of the Tucano tribe. That contact helped me with organizing the logistics and materials for my upcoming trip, advising me to buy gifts for the community leaders such as fishing nets, metal pots, cigarettes and machetes. With those supplies secured, we set off. And after five days of painful travel, some 50 miles upriver from São Gabriel da Cachoeira, I arrived at the Tucanos' home and was warmly welcomed. I was 23 years old, and the next few weeks changed my life and career from that point forward. There was no glory or romance here, I soon found, only nature at its most raw. All day, clouds of insects buzzed incessantly around my head and bit my skin. Since there was nowhere to escape, I had to learn to ignore them. Around noon, the heat was so unbearable that all human activity stops. Even in full shade, I'd sweat what felt like liters of water and would quickly dehydrate if I wasn't careful. In the afternoon, the rain would often come in such intensity that everything was muted by its roar. Sheltering from it wasn't always possible, so I'd often sit shivering, waiting for it to stop. I didn't sleep much, thanks to the bug bites, the rain leaking through the thatched roof, and the hard roots and vines on the ground beneath me. After a week of this, I was tired beyond belief, suffering from hunger pangs, and oscillating between unbelievably hot and horribly cold. But by the second week, something magical happened: I was so exhausted that I actually slept. Day by day, the very things that had bothered me so much that I'd wondered how I could possibly endure them began to fade into the background. Before long, I stopped noticing them. It's remarkable how adaptable the mind and body can be when you cut off alternatives. I've constantly used this lesson whenever I've faced subsequent challenges, including those of entrepreneurship. From downsizing to fundraising to scaling, the psychological hurdles have sometimes felt overwhelming. But whenever I've faced these obstacles, I remember the jungle. [Photo: Ammonitefoto/iStock] All For One And One For All When you're a potential food source for the other inhabitants of your environment, you start to see things differently. I was only a guest for a few weeks, but for my Tucano hosts, the excruciatingly difficult task of finding food was a matter of survival. In order to protect their quality of life, the tribe needs to specialize in tasks and work together. Meat is a rarity. It can take days for a hunting party to bring back game. The community's staple food, manioc—a root vegetable known elsewhere as cassava—is difficult to prepare. It takes a long time to extract the product's toxins with traditional methods in order to make it digestible. Overcoming all these daily obstacles meant constantly working together. Everyone I met had their own form of specialized knowledge and contributed in some way to the overall health of the community. Despite the fact that illness, accident, and death were ever-present realities, the tribe seemed to function like a highly coordinated organization. This lesson never left me. The value of bringing people together with specialized knowledge to exchange ideas and support one another is a bedrock of any team's growth and success. Wherever I've lived and whatever I've done since in my career, I've always done my best to surround myself with as many experienced people as possible. No Distractions Equals Deeper thinking It goes without saying that there was no cell-phone signal in the jungle, no power outlets, and no Wi-Fi (all things that many modern-day digital nomads often can't do without). I was completely cut off from the outside world and and, subsequently, any chance of distracting myself. This was before smartphones came on the scene, but as a 23 year old, I was still a pro at entertaining myself with digital media. It was just so convenient—and remains even more so today. But when distraction isn't an option, you're forced to face all your thoughts and emotions head-on. At first, the only thing I could think about was how much I hated this horrible place. What had I gotten myself into? I had no way of stopping my relentless feelings of frustration and self-recrimination—at least within the first few days. Then, after dinner one night, they came to an end. With nothing else to divide my attention, I began to reflect on more important things like family, community, love, and purpose. I was actually shocked that this stuff was coming from inside my own head; I'd never had such crystal-clear thoughts about those subjects before. I had never given myself a chance to reflect that deeply. To be honest, this freaked me out a little at first, but with no choice but to come to grips with these new thoughts, I realized they made me feel stronger, more connected, and better grounded. Meditation is now a key component of my daily routine and helps me grapple with my most pressing problems. My own life was dramatically different from the lives of my Amazonian hosts. No matter what high-pressure situations or low points I've experienced since—from sweating my way through VC pitches to wallowing in despair when my company wasn't meeting expectations—I know it's nothing like the realities of surviving in the Amazon. The month I spent in the jungle taught me, sooner than most people in their twenties learn, to move past self-pity, and to realize the tremendous privilege it is to work in an office with people I respect on something we feel connected to. I am grateful to be part of a team of intelligent, motivated people who care about their jobs. My visit with the Tucano people has served as a compass for my life and career ever since. Upon returning home, I joined the U.S. Peace Corps and volunteered in Romania for the next two years. I couldn't have been more prepared. Being stripped of everything I took for granted helps me to remember that things can always get much more difficult. Just as the bee stings and embarrassment subsided, so did my perception of them as negative events. GUEST COMMENT Your biggest omnichannel hurdle may be your tech vendor

Omnichannel isn’t just the future of retailing. It’s the now of retailing. Retailers know they must leverage their stores to offer a superior, seamless, omnichannel experience. The pressure will only grow more intense: Forrester predicts that in Western Europe, for example, the web will influence 45% of offline sales by 2020.

So what’s standing in retailers’ way?

Many blame siloe’d backend systems that are not well integrated enough to execute the intricate dance required by a “simple” transaction such as buy online, pickup in store – and oops please switch the size and take back this mobile order return.

But it’s more than that. Retailers’ own technology partners are also standing in the way.

Some of the biggest retail tech brands out there have significant gaps in their solution sets, as well as multiple, overlapping products. The path forward is unclear, so their users turn to systems integrators to pull together the pieces and parts and layer on functions in an attempt to mimic fully omnichannel solutions. The truth is, legacy software – even knit together to facilitate some omnichannel functions – just isn’t nimble enough for an omnichannel world. Instead, retailers need solutions that provide faster time to value, easy migration and native integration. That is found only in retail cloud solutions built to work seamlessly across channels.

A new blueprint for a new world of retailing

Two of the most important considerations in charting a path to omnichannel are time and money.

Time: The average cloud project takes six to nine months. Trying to achieve omnichannel functionality by layering on top of multiple disparate legacy solutions takes at least double that time: 12 to 18 months. Speed to value is vitally important as consumers’ omnichannel expectations evolve at lightning speed. It’s hard to think of a retail category in which it will still be okay to operate siloe’d channels in 2019.

Money: The CIO of one US big box retailer estimated that for every $1m they spend on multivendor software, they spend 20 to 30 times more on integrating that software into their omnichannel platform. So if the CIO wants to purchase a $3 million solution, the board must approve $63m or more. The vast majority of this spend goes towards making sure that omnichannel journeys can work and scale through the disconnected assets. And this problem isn’t static, it changes and expands as the vendors update their solutions and become less friendly in multivendor environments.

That’s not all. Research by Accenture found software is either the first or second largest category of the typical company’s IT spend. Of that, 50 to 60% goes to maintenance and support. These fees are the real bread and butter for many top retail software companies. Most software companies are not willing to part with these support revenue streams, so they resort to a number of tactics to retain the cashflow, including irrevocably linking various support payment commitments and only temporarily suspending the commitment when a customer moves into an emerging cloud solution. Retailers should consider getting a completely fresh start by using a fully integrated cloud solution which eliminates these substantial payments and complexities, and delivers significant operating savings. Given the urgency, retailers must choose a path to omnichannel that will minimize both their time and cost investment.

Evaluating the omnichannel tech vendor

There’s no disputing the wholesale shift of enterprise software toward cloud and all of its iterations. A recent Gartner survey shows more than half of new enterprise software subscriptions use alternative consumption models including SaaS. For retailers seeking to lay solid foundation to support omnichannel demand now and in the future, here are three key considerations when evaluating cloud-based retail technology solution providers:

Support and maintenance of customer journey paths. A customer shopping journey might start on a device and end in a store, start in a store and end at the call center, start on mobile and end on desktop, or undertake many other variations. Mapping customer journey paths is perhaps the most difficult but important step in transitioning to an omnichannel solution, and most retailers are mapping 20 to 100 of them.

In a multi-vendor environment, mapping customer journeys is not a one-time task. Retailers must rework them every time there is a change in one of the four to five underlying systems they touch. This is precisely what causes much of the 20x to 30x cost requirements of implementing these solutions, most of which goes to the systems integrator.

When the omnichannel solution is fully integrated into the cloud and sold as a service, more of the responsibility is on the vendor, rather than the retailer, to maintain those common journey paths as the solution evolves. In fact, some cloud solutions have many customer journeys already built across the solution set. When the vendor is maintaining the solution, they natively address other issues where in-house management complexity is onerous, such as keeping up with evolving security and confidentiality regulations, removing that burden from the retailer.

Role of Enterprise Order Management

It is the enterprise order management (EOM) platform that supplies the connected intelligence that makes omnichannel customer journeys possible. Many retailers are making the mistake of focusing on one element of omnichannel, such as re-platforming ecommerce, implementing mobility, or purchasing a new POS platform. While the commerce platform and to some degree the POS become touchpoints, the EOM does the heavy lifting, order managing, order brokering and touching every system involved in omnichannel. Unfortunately, most retailers still buy ecommerce and POS platforms without fully considering the wider implications of customer journeys. There are surprisingly few order management options, and the legacy solutions that exist require costly systems integration work to connect to other systems. An order management platform should be at the centre of any well-designed cloud solution, already integrated with supporting applications and perfectly situated to orchestrate complex omnichannel customer journeys.

Integration and fit: Buying an integrated cloud solution requires the same due diligence that software purchasing has always required: Ensuring features and functions meet the need, checking references, fully vetting the vendor’s viability, ensuring solutions can easily integrate with your other software, and so on. Deal terms are also critical: It is very important to make sure the contract does not limit your ability to change vendors or products, or incur costs increases when legacy applications are used in a new way.

Turn retail tech back into an enabler: Omnichannel has rapidly evolved into retail table stakes, with digitally nimble retailers already gaining significant advantage over those not yet able to deliver a fully seamless experience across channels. That puts retailers under tremendous pressure to shift away from siloed IT infrastructure. But legacy software products – and notably, the big brand IT vendors that provided it – are standing in the way due to gaps in their solutions, too many products and diversion of resources into immature, me-too cloud offerings. Layering omnichannel functionality on top of this foundation costs too much, takes too long and produces unsatisfactory results.

To attract and serve today’s omnichannel customer, retailers need software architecture designed to support their complex customer journeys. And they need it right now. Fully integrated cloud solutions deliver two-times-faster time to benefit while decreasing operating, licensing and maintenance costs and shifting maintenance responsibilities to the vendor. Retailers adopting cloud solutions gain the nimble, modern IT infrastructure essential to meet omnichannel demands, and can adapt faster as omnichannel expectations inevitably change.
