The Halloween stranger au has me in an actual chokehold PLS—
you didn’t ask but i have so much more for hsr.
tw for typical halloween slasher fics talk — murder, blood, gore, obsession, stalking, yandere themes, overall horror themes & subjects.
Tumblr media
sunday & robin in a wrong turn (2021) / mandy (2018) / midsommar (2019) spin off: where, surprise surprise, your car breaks down and you get picked up by a sweet girl who introduces you to her small private town off the highway. she expresses that her town is due to have a religious celebration over the weekend, and it’s going to be a bit to get your car repaired in town.
you’re introduced to the family head who is oddly pleased to meet you, and says you’re just perfect for the celebration. somehow, along the way, as repressed and closed in robin is, she turns her affections for you—the most normal person she’s met—into this strange twisted romance. you’ve somehow seduced her, and sunday finds out.
as revenge, sunday brings you in for questioning. he’s disgusted that someone like you—who he now labels as some sort of antichrist—can trudge into this town, sully and ruin his sister’s innocence. somehow, however, you manage to seduce him, though not on purpose. you plead your case and promise to leave and never come back, but as you’re being held captive, sunday finds himself falling victim to whatever curse you’ve inlaid upon him.
doctor ratio in gothika (2003): where you work as a psychiatrist and struggle to help your patients. your coworker, doctor ratio, has continuously held down his advances and interests towards you, despite the chemistry. you then wake up confused as a patient in the hospital you used to work at, and doctor ratio does everything in his power to believe you and help you out.
and despite how much you plead and beg to be set free, he can’t do anything that would result in you hurting him, someone else, or even worse, yourself.
acheron and black swan in scream (1996): two girls crash into your house, chase you around with knives, killed all of your friends and anyone that tried to make any advances on you in the past. two repressed homosexuals running after ANOTHER repressed homosexual (you)? banger.
and yes, you do shove a grand piano down the stairs. and yes, black swan gets smacked right in the face with it. all the better when you’re dragged by your hair into the bedroom and she has a nice bruise on her face, and acheron is extremely pissed off.
jing yuan or argenti in the candyman (1992): the ghost in the mirror that only comes out once someone has uttered its name three times becomes infatuated with a detective trying to investigate the mysterious disappearances and murders over the infamous ghost story.
both argenti and jing yuan fit the personality of sinister, yet gentle and beautiful, where the candyman in the original 1992 slasher worked more to seduce his victims that outright murder them.
blade in a the boy (2016) / halloween (1978) spin off: where you find another resident living in your house after investigating a series of strange knocks. you end up communicating with the supposed ghost that haunts your home.
and it is only when you fall victim to an unfortunate home invasion that the apparent ‘ghost in the walls’ is a real man that’s been living in your attic for years, and has been watching your every move.
he’s also developed an unhealthy obsession with you—and, boy, has it been a while since you’ve seen certain articles of clothing.

halloween (1978) is of course a genre-defining piece of slasher horror, but its theme that fascinates me more than the standard sex and gender discourse is that of suburbia. cars and telephones are major motifs in the film; in the broad-lawned world of haddonfield, neighbors shut their blinds on fleeing final girls, and it is only with cars and phones that the characters can seek connection and help. cars in this film represent agency and place in society. the sheriff’s power is written on the hood of his lawfully issued car. the girls are granted limited agency and a caveated place in society when their parents allow them to borrow their cars; they are in a tenuous position where they must hide their adult behavior—smoking in the car, or having sex—lest their parents remove their conditional agency and place in society by no longer letting them borrow the car. the film’s huge emphasis on how little credence, freedom, and power children are given in suburban society raises the stakes of these teenagers potentially being socially reduced to children. and, finally, michael myers drives a stolen car with driving lessons he acquired in secret: he takes agency despite never having been granted it. michael’s motivations are an ultra-simplified rehash of norman bates’s; what he wants or does is not important, but it is important that he is able to do it without being granted agency or a place in society. he is a blank slate who has never existed in the world as an adult, and yet he is able to drive without permission, enter homes without permission, punch through doors as though they are not there. he approaches through the blurred background of shots, rather than appearing in the foreground like other characters do. the horror of michael myers is that he resists the rules and categorization suburban society lives and dies by, and so it is appropriate that he is only weakened enough to be chased away when first his father and later laurie pull off his mask, revealing his face and making him vulnerable to naming, categorization, and personalization. although most of the themes of halloween (1978) are extremely popular and well-trodden roads in the film world, its presentation of american suburbia and the horror it is weak to is well-conceived and well-executed

Happy Halloween 2024, from Quetzalli (and the Local Group)!
Tumblr media
"But the road you're walking might be long sometimes You just keep on steppin' and you'll be just fine, yeah!"
OHHHH MAN, I had to rush pretty hard to get this done just before Halloween officially ends, but somehow I did it, and it was definitely worth it! Going off a theme inspired by a film I've had a strong fondness for and have been liking even more since I rediscovered the soundtrack recently, here's the Local Group dressed as the main characters from The Wiz (1978): Looks to the Moon as Dorothy, No Significant Harassment as the Scarecrow, Five Pebbles as the Tin Man, Seven Red Suns as the Cowardly Lion, and Rivulet as Toto! I would go more in-depth for my reasonings for each, but alas, I don't have the time right now.
I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! I think I got quite a bit more practice with my digital sketching style, and of course, this really makes me wanna draw the Local Group being silly together more often!
But for now, I hope you enjoy this! Happy Halloween, everyone!

Halloweenathon:Someones Watching Me
So I am a John Carpenter fan and Ive seen most of his movies ,but there are a few ones I havent seen. This year I decided to take a look at this lesser known TV movie that he made around the same time he made Halloween. Now this is technically Carpenters first horror film......Though while it was made first it came out the month after Halloween
Tumblr media
In this 1978 TV movie Leigh (Lauren Hutton ) who is being stalked by a peeping tom,but is having trouble having people take her seriously save for her friend Sophie (Adrienne Barbeau ) and boyfriend Paul (David Birney )
I find both this film and the Carpenter written (Though directed by Irving Kirshner ) Eyes of Laura Mars interesting .While both came out after Halloween ,their orgins are before it ,so you see the orgins of the themes that were solidified in Halloween.....If that makes any sense
Anyway the film is a pretty good TV suspense film, the struggle of Leigh to be taken seriously is very well done,it is suspenceful and its fun seeing Charles Cyphers (The cop from Halloween) in this .The cast is all good though the scene stealer is Adrienne Barbeau as Sophiie, and I think the film handles her being a lesbian better then I expected for a film from 1978 made for TV
Its not perfect,it drags a bit ,I think it ends suddenly and while the villain is realistic.....I wouldve liked a bit more from him.Ill admit while John Carpenter has a thing for anonymous evil,Im not wild about it
Overall, its pretty decent ,Ive seen better TV movies though it might grow on me

2024 Megaman Valentine’s Day Fanart Contest Rules Thread *CLOSED*
Hiya. Anybody still using social media or drawing and not using AI? OK, cool. Drawing neat Meganman pics contest #17 for Lovey Dovey Day sponsored by me and stuff is go time. After last year was a little different, and went the gift exchange route, it's back to your regularly-scheduled competition this season. The deadline this year will be on Tues., Mar. 12th, 2024. Nearly a month AFTER Valentine's Day? Wh…why? Because I'm tired, and you all are too, that's why. Or, well, read on to find out. XD As is the usual norm, there are two categories this year, one for Talent and one for Humor. You are allowed to submit one entry for each category, if you would like. If you place in one category, you will be automatically disqualified from the other, for reasons of fairness, and to give other people a chance to win a prize.
CATEGORY 1 (Talent): Black and White Day
Tumblr media
This year, good ol' Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, went into public domain and people got somewhat excited about that. On top of games like Cuphead or Bendy and the Ink Machine, the retro look of 'Rubber Hose' animation has had a bit of a revival over recent years. You might even know a fellow Mega Man artist or two who has experimented with that style, or maybe even own a Mega Man shirt that has the pic above on it, as I do. So, for this year's talent category, your goal will be to create a beautiful monochrome piece in a retro Rubber Hose art style celebrating the pseudo-Valentine's holiday known as White Day. What is White Day? How would you draw something for it? If you've played X DiVE, you certainly know about the White Day outfits for characters such as Alia, Cinnamon or Axl. But here is a basic explanation via Wikipedia: "White Day is relatively new, created by the confectionery industry in Japan. White Day was first celebrated in 1978. It is celebrated one month after Valentine's Day, on March 14th. It started as an "answer day" to Valentine's Day on the grounds that men should pay back the women who gave them chocolate and other gifts on Valentine's Day. Men are expected to return gifts that are at least two or three times more valuable than the gifts received in Valentine's Day. The color white was chosen because it's the color of purity, evoking "pure, sweet teen love", and because it's also the color of sugar. Gift exchanges happen between romantic partners, friends, and coworkers. Traditionally, popular White Day gifts include food like white chocolate, marshmallows, candy, cookies, and other "white" accessories like jewelry, bags, lotions, and lingerie."
Content Requirements: * Mega Man characters of your choice celebrating White Day * Mimicking retro "rubber hose" art style (Eg: Steamboat Willie era Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, Popeye, Cuphead, etc.) * Black and white/monochrome palette. Seeing as this is a Mega Man contest, a retro Game Boy screen-like greenish tint is acceptable. As it is for love, I will also accept a garish Virtual Boy reddish tint, if you are that daring. Otherwise, try to keep your art retro-looking, using black, white and grey. No full-color illustrations for this category. * As this is the talent category, judging will be primarily based on the effort, creativity & overall concept of your piece. How well you pull off the rubber hose style for your characters and how well your picture fits the White Day theme.
CATEGORY 2 (Humor): Showing Some Skins
Tumblr media
If you are like me, you have a favorite skin/outfit in X DiVE and you never end up changing it out. It may not be Christmas or Halloween anymore, but you might be that person who always uses Christmas Ferham or Halloween Vile, regardless of the time of year. So, forget the Cupid costumes or giant teddy bear outfits this Valentine's. Create your own holiday skin/outfit you wish would have been implemented in DiVE, but it's being worn at the wrong time of year. For the humor category this year, I would like you to create a funny Valentine's day pic where some character is wearing the wrong holiday outfit/skin that kinda changes the whole mood of a romantic evening together. Then again, it may or may not kill the romance, and might enhance it. Whether it be St. Patrick's Day Toad Man driving Snake Man and Ophiuchus out of a candle-lit restaurant, Tron Bonne picking up her date on her Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Float Gustaff, Tax Day Armor X crunching numbers with Alia in bed while asking her if she plans to file single or jointly this year, or someone risking themselves for President's Day sexy Mr. Lincoln skin Proto Man, the romantic holiday mismatches are endless!
Content Requirements: * A Megaman character of your choice wearing any holiday-themed skin/outfit that does not really belong for Valentine's Day, in a Valentine's Day setting. * As this is the humor category, judging will be based primarily on how funny your piece is. Creativity, concept and execution may get you some bonus points. But the focus of this category is how well you make us laugh, not how technically skilled you are at art!
PRIZES:
The winners for both the Talent and Humor categories will receive the following:
1st Place: $175 USD 2nd Place: $100 USD 3rd Place: $75 USD
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
When you submit, I would prefer you include the following information in this format, along with your entry:
(Your name/preferred alias) – As much as I usually know who you are, there’s always someone new or somebody who has a different preference from what their email name says. A link to your preferred social media account also works.
(Category this entry is for) – You can either say 1/2, or Talent/Humor
Anything else you feel I need to know about your piece is always welcome.
Only submit your own work, as usual. Any character, major or minor, from any series is allowed. Pairing characters from different series is totally allowed. Same-gender pairings are completely fine. OCs are allowed, as long as your art contains at least one canon Megaman character.
As always, participants are allowed to submit from all over the world.
Paypal is still the preferred method for cash prize payouts. Please have a valid account to receive your winnings.
Youngin’s, get your parents permission before entering.
Entries can either be e-mailed to me at rock2125[at]hotmail[dot]com, or you can just DM/note me a link to your pic.
DO NOT post your pics in this thread, your dA galleries, Twitter, tumblr blogs, other sites, etc. until the contest is over. This is the fairest way for competitive reasons. I prefer to keep them all secret until the deadline has passed. I’ll edit a confirmed entry list in this thread when I receive them. So you won’t be in the dark about whether or not I’ve received your entry.
DEADLINE:
The deadline for this contest will be Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, by the global end of the day. This gives you nearly 2 months to finish your entries! And if I'm lucky, results can be posted on or near White Day, which is March 14th. A little different this year, both to give people more time, and to fit in with this year's themes mixing it up.
MISCELLANEOUS INFO:
As usual, If you don’t plan to enter, but would like to help me judge, please let me know through DM or mention so here. Never hurts to have extra opinions on all the entries.
Bug me with questions if you have any. Please join in, and good luck to everyone who enters!
Confirmed Entries:
Cat 1 Talent - HikariLux, @eulogysinger, Kaitlin.EXE, @wennastudio, Komito, @sylviidaee,
Cat 2 Humor - AbilityField, @aurantia-ignis, Miralie

Total Number of Completed Works/Fandoms Written In: 24 completed works for a total of just under 150k posted. posted five RWBY fics, posted twenty one LotR: TRoP fics, and one Baldur's Gate 3 fic.
Overall Thoughts: horny as hell, tracks.
Personal Favorite: my personal favorite for the year is probably the first cut is the deepest, mostly because of the themes I get to explore. the sequel is shaping up to be one of my favorite things I've ever written, but I really do love how visceral and vivid this one is. It was also me really dipping my toe into horror, which has been a blast!
Most Under-appreciated: going to have to once again say the first cut is the deepest because I poured so much into this emotionally and creatively. maybe not my best work of the year, but I really do adore it.
Most Popular: Fucking in Love continues to dominate my stats, but of the ones exclusively posted this year, out had the most hits and a fairy tale had the most kudos! although you know where to find me is creeping up there quickly, especially considering how not so long ago it was posted in comparison to the other two.
Story with the Sexiest Moment: oh GOSH, what a choice! i think i have to go with catharsis when Galadriel is interviewing Halbrand about what punishment "how that would work," I loved that dialogue and body language. That whole fic is really sexy, though, lots of fun moments in there! Out of the corner of her eye, Halbrand shrugged.  “For the first time, I’d recommend staying simple.  It can be overwhelming, for some.  Brings up things some people aren’t ready to feel, or don’t realize they feel.” She tried not to take that as a challenge.  “You’re making it sound intense.” “It can be,” he said.  “I’ve had a lot of criers afterward.  It’s a, ah, catharsis, if you would.  Releases all your pent up shit and makes you feel it.  Not a bad thing, just intense.”  He tilted his head.  “You seem like you would like intense.”   Galadriel bristled, even as her insides turned gooey and her tongue twisted itself into knots.  She settled on, “And if I would?”
Most Fun Story to Write: WHAT A DECISION! writing Fucking in Love with @set-wingedwarrior is always a blast because of its nature as a collaboration. in most recent memory, you know where to find me was exceptionally fun, especially the dialogue scene with everyone. I don't know, writing Astarion and Shadowheart bitching at each other was a blast!
Hardest: emotionally, the darkest day was tough because of personal experiences but also quite a release. creatively, Fucking in Love poses a challenge if only because it is intimidating to be writing such a loved fic. as much as we try to keep that in perspective, knowing thousands of people have literally read it is intimidating!
Biggest Surprise: starting to write dead dove! it came at a crucial point in my personal life, and I'm so grateful it did, for both the emotional coping it has brought me, the community I have found, and the fun i've had.
Did you take any risks in writing this year?: OOO! I guess I took a few! Starting to post dead dove was certainly a choice and one that I'm still nervous about, but also broaching out into horror! I've been quite settled in my niche for a few years now, so trying something new in both those regards was quite a risk for me.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: while it's not posted, I am going to say the sequel to the first cut is the deepest if only because I really dig down into a LOT. of the works I've posted, catharsis was a turning point for me personally in some ways, or a pivot point at least, just because that psychological and emotional release alongside the physical one is such a huge aspect of why I write smut.
Favorite Lines/Scenes: DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE! ahaha, in all seriousness, the parallel opening perspectives and ending in meant to be (if it comes back) makes me tickled pink.
It was the CD still in her car.  The old sweatshirt tucked away on the back shelf of her closet.  The lip balm she still bought whenever she finished because he had liked the taste on her lips, because she had just gotten used to the flavor, she told herself.  It was the way she hadn’t worn that blouse since the breakup, and it was the songs she still put on every new playlist she made but skipped every time.  It was the way she couldn’t drink lemonade now without craving the mint he used to muddle into it for her, the same way she couldn’t ever make it how he did.  It was every imprint he had left on her, in her, and no matter what she did, no matter how she tried to smooth over and scrub every mark he’d left, he stayed like a scar.   ~~~ It was the pair of panties still tucked into his drawer.  The blonde hair ties he kept finding all over his place but never actually tossed out.  The way he hadn’t needed to buy chamomile tea since he’d run out, because she was the only one who drank it and she wasn’t coming back.  It was the shampoo that he’d only switched to because she liked the scent of lemongrass better than his former eucalyptus, and it was the fact that he hadn’t tossed her mug, the one that was short and stout and matte gray, because he didn’t entirely believe that she wasn’t not coming back.  It was the way he still made curry on Thursdays, even though that had been her weekly tradition that he’d stolen when she started coming to his place for almost every meal, but it wasn’t like he could stop himself from craving it.  It was the way she had carved into his life like a scalpel wielded with brutal force, precise and cruel and cutting far too deep, and how he was still gushing blood from every incision.
My Fave Part of Fandom in 2023: finding a new fandom space in the form of LotR: TRoP fandom! tolkien's writing in incredibly rich, and the people there, especially my fellow Haladriels, has just been incredible for me.
2024 Writing Ambitions: Oh, so many! I don't know if I'll be able to write every day of 2024 as I've done so far with every day of 2023 (!!!), but I hope I continue to make and leave space for my words.
2024 Fics on the Immediate Horizon: Yuletide fic reveals x4 Fucking in Love chapter 16 something self-indulgent, just a matter of which one ends up finished first!

5, 20 + 29 for horror film asks!!
5. Underrated film(s)? so many!!! i genuinely think everyone, horror fan or not, should see peeping tom (1960) bc it literally blew me away with how good it was. incredible psychological thriller that really moved me and lingered in my mind. idk if it's underrated per se but it's really odd how it was almost universally panned at the time for (allegedly) being disgusting and depraved, and basically destroyed celebrated director michael powell's career, while the same year hitchcock had a huge hit with psycho which deals with some similar psychosexual themes and is just as, if not more disturbing than peeping tom. really makes you think
as another really underrated one is wake wood (2009) which is SO scary and nobody talks about it?? i also really liked pyewacket (2017), tourist trap (1979), and a slightly less underrated one that i still don't think gets enough attention is frailty (2001 - bill paxton directs and stars HEEHEE)
20. Mandatory October viewing? my october/halloween favs are the craft (1996), ginger snaps (2000), trick 'r' treat (2007), and of course halloween (1978). also any gothic horror i think fits the vibe. honourable mention to practical magic (1998) which isn't a horror movie but it is one of my favs of all time and definitely essential for halloween
29. Favourite production design in a horror movie? 1000% the wicker man (1973) it just looks incredible and it's so my vibe

Hii! So every time I see your username on discord or here I always wanna ask you about it but then I don’t cause I’m socially awkward as heck and I don’t wanna seem like a weirdo - but here I am anyway - so, are you into horror movies??? I love finding horror movie fans in the wild cause I feel like none of my friends are into them 😭 who’s your fave final girl?? And what are your fave movies??
Oh my gosh. Thank you, thank you for asking this!!
If you don't mind, I'm gonna use this to go HARD lol.
I would dedicate far more of this tumblr to the genre if I could but I don't want to assault everyone's eyes with it, teehee.
Hello fellow horror fan! I'm so glad someone noticed!! Yes, I am a HUGE horror fanatic. It's like a major part of my identity!!! I love horror movies, video games, books, literally all things spooky. I've got posters all over my apartment, a stupid amount of trinkets, including a Pyramid Head plushie that's my pride and joy. :)
Horror is a fantastic genre brimming with creative ideas and it is such a healthy outlet for the anxieties of life. It is also uniquely relevant for the social scientist in me. Horror can provide great insights into how social problems become ingrained in the public consciousness, shedding light on the fears and concerns of different eras, especially in the last 100 or so years since the film industry was created. I took a monster-themed class on college last year, and am following it up with a film studies course this next semester. I write a lot about the monstorous feminine and gender studies in relation to the horror. Because, as horror reflects the concerns of the outside world, how women get treated within them is fascinating material to explore power dynamics, social expecations, and persistent fears. One of my favorites was a piece I did on feminist commentary in 2019's Ready or Not. My graduating project is going to be a zine-style work where I'm choosing 4 different horror films with 4 core aspects of the female experience and I'm so excited to start it!
To actually answer your question, my favorite horror films as of now go as:
Scream (1996) The Thing (1982) Alien (1979) Ready or Not (2019)
Special mentions go out to Carrie (1976), Halloween (1978), REC (2007), Ginger Snaps (2000), and recents such as X and Barbarian. :)
Extra special mention, my favorite horror video games are Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill 2. (Very creative, I know, lol.)
As Scream is my favorite horror series, I'd have to say Sidney Prescott is my favorite final girl. She's just such a resilient badass and I love all of the Scream films and her journey so much!
Thank you again! I hope my excitement isn't overwhelming! Feel free to message to chat about it any time!

10 Underrepresented Horror Movies to check out for Spooky Season. (List originally written in May of 2021):
1.) Happy Death Day
This movie is great if you want a (mostly) comedic movie with a horror edge to it.
Like I said, this is a horror comedy first and foremost, with a time-loop twist…
It’s fun, fast paced, and has a surprising amount of character development and conflict throughout.
Tumblr media
2.) Get Out
Delightfully refreshing.
This movie mixes horror with meta humor and racial commentary. I thought it did a great job creating a feeling of unease throughout, and it managed to have a fleshed out and intriguing protagonist that you can really root for.
The music gave me Coraline-vibes for some reason— what with all the harp/string based instruments, and with the unsettling chanting throughout its soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Overall, it’s a movie that mixes typical horror conventions with a couple of modern twists.
3.) Freaky
This movie isn’t without it’s faults, as the dialogue and the tropes are often very cliche…
Purposely so... But it was still a bit corny at points.
But it grew on me as it went on.
There was some great character acting, and much like Happy Death Day, it takes a familiar concept and adds a horror-style twist to it. (Which makes sense, considering they’re both directed by the same person.) This time, the gimmick is the tride and true, good ol' body swap.
Tumblr media
There were a ton of classic slasher/ horror movie references and meta moments, and it was rich with humor. Plus there's a group of diverse leads that helm this movie… they bounce off each other well, and have a ton of chemistry together. It's just an all around fun, freeeaaaky, horror movie.
Tumblr media
4.) Suspiria (1977)
Suspiria does a brilliant job obtaining an eerie and eye-catching atmosphere, with the use of primary/secondary colors and it’s haunting original soundtrack... It’s also the first (and only) Giallo film I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
The plot is pretty straightforward. But the real artistry, is in the atmosphere it sets and in the strange surrealism and mysteries it presents.
It relies much more on supernatural thrills and horror than your typical Giallo film typically does. But it is certainly a welcome change here, it's a movie meant to be experienced. Using it's strange, uncanny nature to garner thrills in the audience, both sonically and visually.
Tumblr media
5). Doctor Sleep
The sequel to the horror classic, The Shining.
As far as sequels go, I found this movie outstanding. They did a fantastic job recreating the iconic settings, and with the character casting. The villains were really unnerving. They presented a real danger to the heroes, (Rebecca Ferguson did a fantastic job in particular). The powers were dynamic and unique. And even though it ran at a fairly long runtime, it flew by very quickly.
Tumblr media
6.) Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter and Debra Hall are masterful, as a directing and scoring team. The soundtrack is tense and iconic, and this is the horror movie that popularized the slasher. This movie had shockingly little-to-no gore, and mostly relied on building suspense instead. The way that this movie makes you search for Michael in the frame is amazing, and not something I've seen too often since.
7.) The Descent
(Probably?) The of the most well known horror spelunking movies…
This British-Australian movie stars an all female cast, and kicks some serious ass.
It had some serious build up, and some of the better executed jump scares I’ve seen in a horror movie.
Tumblr media
There's themes about trauma, and not knowing who to trust. And what follows, is a story about a group of adrenaline junkies. that inadvertently get themselves lost in a cave.
Though it eventually veers into a creature feature.
The cast were convincing and distinctive as their respective characters, and the cave scenes were brilliantly claustrophobic.
Tumblr media
The sets were impressive. The (original) ending is incredible… And the characters were capable, (and maybe just maybe,) equally as vicious as the cave dwellers.
(note: it is so important to watch this with the og ending!)
8.) The Lighthouse
This is one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever...experienced.
Shot in black and white, on Kodak Double-X 35mm footage, this movie really commits to the time period it’s set in.
Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe really bring their A+ game here, and really commit to portraying the compelling tale of strangers that slowly start to lose their sanity, while cut off from the rest of world.
Tumblr media
The set design is immaculate and the aforementioned lighthouse is truly impressive in scope.
Tumblr media
It feels like one big fever dream, and has the watcher yearning to know who’s actually telling the full truth. There’s a lot to unpack and analyze: from the painting inspired shots, (ie. Hypnosis.) and it's references to mythology, and even explores themes like sexuality, isolation, etc.…
It does a ton of interesting things visually, too.
Tumblr media
If I had to describe this movie… I’d probably look to how the director himself put it: “You know, does Prometheus ever encounter Proteus in any classical mythology? Not that I’m aware of, but maybe that’s happening in this movie. And so, therefore, Prometheus is taking on some of the heroes that wrestle with Proteus’s characteristics as well as his own.” —
9.) The Banana Splits Movie
Basically, it’s Five nights at Freddy’s meets the Banana Splits show. (A REAL 1960s children’s program that actually existed.)
It’s a crazy ass horror movie that takes real life kid show characters, and makes them the bad guys...
Tumblr media
So, if you’ve ever watched a television show, and thought that there was something just... inherently creepy about it, than this one’s for you. (Especially if you’re into crazed-animal animatronics.) (I'm looking at you fnaf fans)...
Tumblr media
It was insane, gory… and while it’s admittedly not the greatest horror movie in the world, it certainly ran with it’s ridiculous concept and knew exactly what it was going for. (Not to mention that it also has some pretty decent practical effects.)
Tumblr media
10.) Carrie
Sooo seventies, and sooo awesome!
This movie is another horror classic based on Stephen King’s first published work.
It's definitely more of a slow burn, saving most (if not all) of the terror until the third act.
So, if prom night movies seem boring to you, Carrie is here to shake things up… And nothing spices up prom night quite like religious overbearing parents, pigs blood, psychopathic kids, and a telekinetic massacre… right?

Scream (1996)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
For heck’s sake, it’s time I watched a classic. Time to binge what cemented the genre until I’m blue in the face. I LOVE how much this film referenced itself as a meta thing. It was probably done before being meta was even a thing.
I read things about the marketting on this movie and I believe it would have unsettled me if I saw it in ‘96. Having Drew Barrymore as the main face of advertising just to have her die within the first 15 minutes would have been traumatising. That is sort of the whole point of the franchise, to misdirect, shock and build suspense. I understand. But in 2023, it feels like camp (encouragingly).
AND YEAH. The whole cast is really hot. So what?
Screaming at the dialogue. Some stuff is out of pocket (but funny, sorry). Like “There’s always some stupid reason to kill your girlfriend.” HUH??? 🤨
I can’t help but think that in modern day context, this reads as a story of abuse. Wanting to believe the person you trust is not responsible for unspeakable things, and that you should be able to trust them. But that is not always the case. Not sure if this would be a similar reading from the noughties, but the fact it still carries is crazy. There is a double-barrelled plot about the poor justice system. Characters like Courtney Cox’s make me interested in journalism. Even if she is slightly shady at times.
I also love the fact this movie could have been called Scary Movie, thus inspiring the Scary Movie franchise. Also interesting the Red Right Hand (Peaky Blinders theme) is integrated into many important scenes. Hm. What does it mean? As Billy says: It’s all one big movie, only you can’t pick a genre. For fuck’s sake, it even references its own conservative ideology as a genre, and mirroring what happens in “real life.”
You should watch this if:
Untrustworthy narratives and characters
THE horror formula!!! (it always comes back to mommy issues)
Men destroying each other (more specifically, film bros destroying each other)
Similar Titles:
Halloween (1978) (vintage horror, similar premise)

“The brightest star on darkest night.”
Nine.
Tumblr media
.・゜゜・ ・゜゜・.
Tw: themes of hinted at ptsd, yelling, survivors guilt, and hallucinations.
Italics other than diary entries represent past memories
October 31st, 1978.
Dear diary, it's Halloween today, yay..
I feel sad for all the families who have lost their children, how they can no longer trick or treat with their kids they way they used to. It's heartbreaking to think about, knowing that there isn't a single thing I could've done to prevent that.
I get told I'm strong for surviving, but in all honesty I wish I had died that night, so I wouldn't be stuck with the constant struggle to get up, the struggle to keep my eyes open when I can see the mangled bodies of all those children. They are trying to recommend shock therapy to me and I honestly don't think it would help.
Nothing can get rid of these images, not the blood, not the pressure it applies to my chest when I hear a long serious of bangs, I can hear an axe chopping wood and I freeze and hyperventilate.
I don't think I'll ever be the same again.
- Maxine.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
"You've seem to be getting better, Maxine." The woman spoke, after her interaction with the last therapist they offered her a new one, seeing as male therapist's seemed to trigger that kind of response.
"It's Halloween.." she looked out the window of the small dingy room, it looked over a parking lot filled with cars, nice ones.
"Yes, it is. Do you like Halloween?"
She furrowed her brows for a moment before speaking, "I've always loved Halloween, the theme of horror had been such a big part of my life, I loved Stephen King books, I loved thrillers.. I loved Halloween."
"But horror now is just a bad memory correct?"
"..yes." Her eyes now narrowed on the woman. "..my boyfriend or well..ex-boyfriend enjoyed things like that too.. it was something we both could agree to, or well upon.." she laughed dryly.
-
"You can't handle this!?" She stared at Nick, her eyes wide with tears brimming the corners of them.
"Yes! I can't! You- you won't get out of bed! You refused to make any progress!"
"...Did you love me? Or was the idea of me that tempting."
"Max- I-" he seemed to stutter.
"Tell me, Nick. Did you love me?" Her voice broke slightly at the end. "Or- or was having a Shadysider girlfriend just a spot on your fucking bingo card?" She hit his shoulder a bit. "Was I just a game to you!?" Her voice kept breaking.
"No- what-"
"Tell me!! Tell me, Nick! Where's the boy I met huh?! Where's he!" She cried. "Where- Where's Mr.wasn't afraid of me! Or wanted to watch a movie every weekend as a hope for me to hold on! Well guess what! I lived! I lived!"
"Max! Please!" He grabbed her forearms holding the sobbing young woman in place. "I'm going to leave now.." she looked up at him through red bleary eyes.
"..please.."
-
"Maxine are you alright? You've seemed to be lost in thought."
"I'm..okay.." she sighed, "is the session over?"
"..yes, it is..I'm writing you a prescription for, Valium."
"Valium? My mother takes that.."
"Oh, uhm. Okay?" She wrote down the prescription and tipped it off the note pad and handed it to her.
"Take this, and I'll see you next, on Friday have a happy Tuesday.."
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Standing in line at the pharmacy her eyes just kinda drifted around the small store. "Next!" The cashier called out, she turned making her way upwards.
"Uhm, pick up? I think..I've never really done this." She handed the girl her prescription paper.
"One moment," she turned handing the paper off to someone in the back.
Maxine stood there awkwardly as the shuffling of bags and pills seemed to fill the air, suddenly more aware of the people coughing and sniffling their colds away.
"Here you go," she handed the small bag off "that'll be 15.40."
"Uhm, alright.." she pulled out some money and handed it to her, and headed off.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Her eyes drifted over to the Shadyside bookstore, old and dingy.
A small smile tugged at her lips as she decided to head inside, the smell of mothballs and mildew hit her face almost instantly. Yet the store seemed to have this clean look to it, like it was taken care of nicely.
"Didn't you see the sign? We are closing soon so make it fast!" A male voice said from behind a shelf.
"Sorry! I wasn't paying attention to the sign." She looked over at the horror section but turned her eyes towards the romance section instead.
No more horror for her, she knew better. Maxine walked towards the area, old books scattered around, but this one seemed to catch her eyes the most 'Romeo and Juliet.' How sad, she grasped the old book in her hands, the sides of the hard cover seemed to be peeling and bent.
"Romeo and Juliet? A classic." She jumped a little at the voice as she turned her eyes towards the man.
"Hi." She smiled slightly.
"Hi, we close soon." He had such a sweet smile, but had the most unhappy tone.
"It's only.." she looked at her watch. "Two o'clock?"
"..."
"..."
"You gonna but that book or??"
"No need to rush me," she laughed a little. He stared at her expectantly.
“…”
“Aren’t you a tad rude..” she squinted as she looked at his name tag. “Rome.”
“I’m tired.”
“Same here but at-least I wouldn’t drive the customer out.” She rolled her eyes.
“Hey! We don’t get that many customers other than the old guys who think they still sell newspapers in here.” He hummed.
“Like Mr.Jenkins on Potters?”
“Yes! He’s so annoying, he needs to be put in a home..anyways.. book?”
“Yeah yeah, I’m buying.” He seemed relieved and lead her to the front.
“5.40 please.” He placed his hand out with a smile.
“Here,” she handed him the cash.
“Pleasure doing business with you, ms..”
“Maxine.”
“Pretty name for a pretty girl.” He winked.
“Weren’t you just trying to throw me out?”
“Is the flirting going to earn me a tip?”
“..No.” she laughed.
“Dammit.”

Happy STS!
If your WIP were to ever get an adaptation: Who would you want to compose the soundtrack and why? (me, for instance, I would want John Powell to compose FSF because of Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon, and I would want Hanz Zimmer to do TCIO because I love all of the superhero movie scores he’s done.)
Bonus: give us some examples of the composer’s stuff you like!
For Life in Black and White 100% Jeremy Weinglass! You can hear examples of his stuff on my Instrumentals playlist for Life in Black and White or my Instrumentals playlist for The Dotted Line, or, for non-Spotify users, I'll list a few of my favorites. I absolutely love his entire Dreams album (2005), but in particular February (libaw's end arc song), Moon Child, and Perfection (on The Dotted Line's playlist). Not from that album, I also like his cover of Clocks by Coldplay, September, his cover of November Rain by GNR, his cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and his cover of Don't Speak by No Doubt. My beta readers might recognize some of these titles as relevant to the story. ;)
For The Dotted Line, if we're speaking in pure pipe dream, I'd go with John Carpenter (also my favorite director). His work was a major atmospheric inspiration for what I'd like to create in terms of the horror genre, so that inspiration clearly bleeds into The Dotted Line's vibes. Bonus fun fact: his original Halloween film (1978) is my favorite movie! Some favorites: Weeping Ghost, Christine theme (from the 1983 film, also one of my favorite movies), Escape from New York theme, Halloween theme, The Fog, Night.

I randomly feel really bad and also stupid for not liking “critically acclaimed films” I’ve tried to go through them, and I have finished them but I just find it a chore to finish, some of the ones I’ve watched are
Pulp Fiction (what the fuck was that even about?!), The Godfather (I found it so boring), The Banshees of Inisherin (I’m sorry I found that boring and weird), Midsommar (I found that boring and confusing), The Lighthouse (I found it so boring and it confused the fuck out of me), Parasite (I’m sorry I really tried to enjoy it but I also didn’t understand it)
And so, so many more. And some of them are so loved, and I can see the movies are well written, acted, directed etc. I can tell they’re technically “good movies”, but I really don’t like them, and I just feel so stupid when I don’t understand them?!
And it’s weird I find those movies boring but I love Pride and Prejudice, 1917, Lady Chatterly’s Lover etc. and many more movies I should technically find boring but I don’t. I feel it’s so bad bc I want to be in the film industry and these are all movies I should love and recommend as masterpieces but I feel like I’d be laughed out of town.
I’m sorry for the random rant, you’re one of the people I look at for good recommendations! And you’re also the reason I watched Nope, I didn’t enjoy “Us” so I wasn’t sure about Nope but you said how good it was so I watched it and loved it, it’s my favourite Jordan Peele movie! Anyway, I hope you have a great rest of your night! ❤️
one of the greatest things about film is we all interpret it really differently - we see the story differently, the themes differently, the message differs depending on who watches it. with this in mind, what some people will find to be outstanding, others will find average or frankly boring.
a secret about me is i have seen very few “critically acclaimed” films (for instance, ive never seen pulp fiction or the godfather, ive also never seen avatar or any of the lord of the rings films) because a lot of them just don’t appeal to me. i have film bros tell me all the time “cosmos you’re not living, you have to see them!” but truth is, i don’t.
when i watch a film, i watch it to enjoy myself and to learn about a story that interests me. if i read a premise and none of that sparks any interest or harbours any joy for me, i’m just not watching it- no matter how many awards it’s won.
same reason i very seldom read film reviews, usually because the author and i have vastly different tastes. i saw a million and one reviews of folks saying the harley quinn movie sucked and it was awful. i watched it (cause it sounded good to me) and thoroughly enjoyed it- that’s because i like margot robbie and a bit of unserious action. the people writing those reviews did not share my sentiments.
i’m glad you listen to my recommendations, obviously we have common interests and as someone that’s pretty passionate about film- it means a lot that i can recommend films to others. i’m glad you liked Nope but don’t worry, i wasn’t too keen on Us either. i did like Get Out though!
i think what i’m trying to say is, i understand your worries and i think you are worried because you’re obviously quite invested in enjoying film- however, focus on that and don’t worry about other people’s perceptions of your movie taste.
my favourite film of all time is Juno, my second favourite film of all time is Halloween (1978), my third favourite is Nope, and my fourth is SuperBad- what i mean by that is i have a very eclectic bunch of films there. some of those are critically acclaimed and some are not. what matters is i think they’re good, which is why they’re my favourites 🤍
i genuinely hope this helps and i’m lucky to have you here on this blog x

What I watched this week 3/13-3/19
this week was a little skimpy because I had to work so much, but fret not I still have plenty of stuff for y'all
The Shining (1980, Dir. Stanley Kubrick)
Tumblr media
Did y'all know I go to the "overlook" (The Timberline lodge up in Mt Hood national forest) every year in the summer? It's a beautiful place. Anyways you'd think with that I'd have seen the shining by now, but nope! This was my first time ever watching it! And man - what a film! Nothing beats a well made horror movie, in my humble opinion, with that sweet spot blend of the meta-physical and the physical threats, threatening, stylistic cinematography, and a small-yet-solid cast of characters portrayed by talented actors really giving it there all makes for such a satisfying watch!
I've never read the original novel, where most of the subtext and themes of those movie -obviously - are drawn from, and I likely never will as I generally dislike fiction. However. I still found the themes permeant and the subtext moving despite not having it in full context. That, in my own opinion, is what makes the Shining such an effective adaptation - although I am rather uninformed as I've only ever heard people talk about the book.
Definitely one of my favorite horror movies -5/5
Enemy (2013, dir. Denis Villeneuve)
Tumblr media
Okay so I'm just gonna be frank - I am bad with metaphors and symbolism. I can understand character growth, plot structure, timelines, cinematography, lighting, peroid accuracy, and all sorts of more technical and object elements of a movie. I mostly critique based off of these things, I stay in my lane. It's not that I can't ever understand a metaphor or pick up on any forms of symbolism, it's just not really how my brain works.
That being said, I still really really enjoyed this movie. It was a well made slow paced pysch. thriller that tackles adultery and cheating in a way I've never seen a movie do before. Villeneuve's style, as always, adds such a rich, amazing, and lonely air to the film - one which I think helps enhance it's message.
To condense, this is a film about double lives, about two drastically different halves inside one body. It's about secrets and hiding and ultimately letting the facade all down and the chaos all of that will cause in one's life (illustred quite well by the ending scenes of the film.)
I can't really describe this film, just go watch it for yourself. Unless you can't stand spiders. 4.5/5
Halloween (1978, Dir. John Carpenter)
Tumblr media
After marathoning all 6 Scream movies over the course of 2 weeks, my hopes were really low for Halloween. Specifically because Scream, at least the first one, is a pretty self admitted satire of tropes Halloween brought to the table. But I was really surprised with how good this one was!
I don't really know why? Maybe it's because I don't tend to super love what is super popular? But I'm happy to say Halloween holds up and is a genuinely creepy slasher. John Carpenter's slow, meandering style really lends itself well to the genre - making the final kills feel well deserved and establishing a true sense of fear in the audience. Especially with how hidden Michael Meyer's is from the camera for the first 2 acts.
This films lighting and cinematography are also on another level, the way the film gets both literally and tonally darker as the day drags on, the way Michael is always kept in the shadows, the intimate, stalker-esque camera... It's amazing!
Me and the friend I watched Scream with are doing the same thing but for the Halloween franchise now, but less frequently cause there's no upcoming film. So stay tuned as I work my way through 9 more fucking Halloween movies.
This movie was really well made, though not something I would consider a personal favorite. 4/5.
Breaking Bad Season 4 (2011 shrn. Vince Gilligan)
Tumblr media
So I'm just about finished with season 4 and hollllyyyyyyy shit Vince Gilligian is a mastermind. I've really been enjoying the plotline with Hank catching up to Walt + Gus, and am really excited for the payoff in S5. Jesse's arc continues to carry the show and I want nothing but the best for this man. Please oh god Mike just help this man he NEEDS it.
The scene where he went back and cussed out his old rehab therapist was *amazing* and really hit home with just how far gone he thinks he is and gives you a really good look into his pysche. Speaking of Pysches Walt's undoing is finally starting to rear it's head and boy howdy am I ever ready for that clown to kick the bucket. Fuck that guy.
I also really enjoyed the Gus backstory, and Max's death is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire series (is that a spoiler? i don't think so...) Anyways brba continues to be a masterpiece and you'll be seeing more of dis.
