The Story of Oil in Western Pennsylvania: What, How, and Why?

I am a fries-on-salad, haluski dinner, dairy farm heritage kind of Western Pennsylvanian. I grew up near Venango and Crawford County and had a rural childhood. I went to a small school with about 300 kids in K-6th grade. Around 4th grade, I remember taking a field trip to Titusville, Pennsylvania. I remember seeing the familiar road signs and buildings as our bus gassed along the back roads. I had family in the Titusville and Oil City area, so it was a familiar route to take with my parents. I remember thinking, even at that young age, that the area looked worn and just, well, tired. But I was too young to grasp how this tired little town’s geology had changed the global economy and course of human history. When I was older, I pursued a degree in geology and began to understand more about my local community.

Our field trip took us to Titusville, Pennsylvania to visit Drake’s Well, the first commercial oil well in the United States. The site is named after the well’s driller, Edwin L. Drake who in 1859 struck oil outside of Titusville for the Seneca Oil Company. The company took the name from the Seneca Nation, one of the original Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy, who had long made use of the resource Drake sought by skimming naturally-occurring slicks of petroleum, or unrefined oil, from the surface of local waters. These Indigenous people, who were removed from their native lands in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, did not benefit from the Seneca Oil Company.

In the early 1800s oil was an unwanted by-product from salt wells (wells used to mine salt), and before that, a traditional medicine. In small doses, oil was used to treat respiratory diseases, epilepsy, scabies, and other ailments¹. Even today, chemicals made from the refining of petroleum are responsible for many of our modern medicines. Ointments, antihistamines, antibacterials, cough syrups, and even aspirin are created from chemical reactions created from petrochemicals².

However, the purpose of Drake’s Well was to produce oil for refining into kerosene for lamps, and thereby provide an alternative to the whale oil then used to illuminate homes and workplaces. Salt wells used water to dissolve salt source rock, and then carry the resulting brine through piping to the surface where it would be evaporated to leave salt as a solid residue. Although this method works for producing salt, it was far less efficient for producing oil. Productive oil drilling required new techniques, and one of Drake’s most important innovations was the “drive pipe,” sections of cast iron pipe driven into the shaft to protect the drill bit from water and cave-ins. Through experimentation and innovation, on August 27, 1859, Drake struck oil when his drill reached a depth of 69.5 feet.

While Drake’s Well was not the most productive, or largest oil well, the Titusville site is globally significant because it kick-started the petroleum drilling revolution that eventually changed global economies and environments. While Edwin Drake lived a hard life even after his discovery, he is still considered the father of the modern petroleum practices and industry³.

When my field trip class arrived at the Drake’s Well Museum I remember seeing an odd looking wooden building with an awkward chimney-like structure on one side. We were led through single-file so everyone could get a look at the steel machinery used in the drill, and the pipes that dispersed oil into wooden barrels clustered in the building. In my 10-year-old brain there is no way I could properly fathom that this discovery was related to many of the comforts and conveniences I took for granted in my life, such as cars, heating, electricity, plastics, medicines, and even the asphalt roads that we drove on. Why was Titusville special? More specifically, why did western Pennsylvania have oil in the ground?

From about 490 to 360 million years ago, during the span of geological time known as the Ordovician Period and Devonian Period, most of what is now Pennsylvania was an ocean basin teeming with life. Pre-Appalachian Mountains systems eroded over time and deposited sediment of sand, silt, and mud that mixed on the seafloor with the dead plant material. Currents at the ocean bottom were minimal, leaving the accumulating sediments and organic material relatively undisturbed and oxygen-free. Without oxygen, bacteria that normally break down organic material could not act. A thick, black, anoxic ooze formed, preserving the organic material. Over millions of years, forces caused by plate tectonics generated enough heat and pressure to compact the sediments into rock and “cook” the organic material into petroleum.

If you’re from western Pennsylvania, you’ve probably heard of the Marcellus and Utica shales. The natural gas extracted from these rock units formed in a similar way to petroleum but was subjected to a much longer period of heat and pressure.

With Edwin Drake’s success, and layers of oil-bearing rock relatively close to the surface, Titusville boomed. The year Drake drilled his first oil well, Titusville only had 250 residents. However, by 1865 the population increased to 10,000. Nearby Pithole City, now a ghost town, had 50 hotels during the oil peak of the area around 1866. This boom was short lived as other drilling companies began operations in the area and excess production lowered oil prices. Companies picked up to look elsewhere almost as quickly as they appeared⁵. While Titusville boomed and busted, the oil industry itself was growing. Drake drilled for a product to compete with whale oil, but the oil industry underwent phenomenal growth because the demand for its product grew as a lubricant for engines and many other types of machines, a resource for heating on a distributed scale, and as a refined fuel for developing motorized vehicles. Two World Wars during the first half of the 20th Century and the population explosion of the 1950s further increased demand for petroleum. During the Century’s latter half advancements in oil drilling technology made ocean drilling platforms a reality, and with them an increase in oil production as well as an increase in negative impacts due to devastating oil spills.

As of 2016, the world consumed over 97 million barrels daily⁶. So what does combusting 97 million barrels of oil a day, a resource from below the surface, mean for the Earth’s atmosphere? The burning of fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Greenhouse gases absorb heat from the sun that the earth’s surface reflects back out into the atmosphere, similar to how a blanket traps in body heat. Burning fossil fuels causes climate change by increasing the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, thickening the “blanket” around the earth, and increasing the global average temperature. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2019 greenhouse gas CO₂ emissions totaled 33 gigatons, or 1 billion metric tons, or about the weight of 1.5 billion school buses⁸. Climate change is responsible for increased frequency and severity of weather disasters, wildfires, and flooding, to name a few negative impacts. The abundant CO₂ in our atmosphere equilibrates with and diffuses into our oceans, causing the water to become more acidic and eroding the calcium carbonate structures of coral and other marine organisms. Climate change does not just affect wildlife, it also affects the lives of Pennsylvanians. In Pennsylvania climate change is likely to lead to increasing home insurance rates, higher taxes to replace infrastructure, longer allergy seasons, increasing heat stroke rates in citizens, rising food costs due to crops damaged by erratic weather and higher temperatures, and decreasing water quality and availability due to large storms causing water contamination⁷.

Early organisms were buried by sediment 488 to 360 million years ago and altered into petroleum by heat and pressure. For thousands of years, Earth’s petroleum reserves were largely untouched. Innovator Edwin Drake changed petroleum’s role by successfully drilling the first commercial oil well in North America that August day in 1859. Petroleum became a global commodity, eventually fueling a fast paced modern life. Now in the 21st century, the burning of fossil fuels, such as petroleum, is causing worldwide rapid climate change.

When I was on that field trip to Drake’s Well in 4th grade, we did not discuss the global or local implications of petroleum. This resource is responsible for many of the day to day conveniences that have come to define contemporary life, but it also feeds environmental change that is forcing a “new normal,” and will cause an existential threat to humanity. I could not have fathomed that this global resource had its start in my own family’s backyard. I think that Drake’s Well is a good reminder that Earth-changing innovations can happen anywhere. I don’t think Drake could have predicted the scale to which his discovery would change society and the environment over the next 160 years, in the same way that most people do not realize how their small individual actions are affecting the larger social-ecological systems, and sustainability of all life on Earth. Although individual actions can negatively affect Earth, they can also be positive. Who knows, the next innovation to combat anthropogenic climate change may be happening in your backyard. Wind and solar farms have been developing and growing throughout Pennsylvania since 2007, providing an alternative option for electric energy use.

I started having more appreciation for the Earth Sciences as I got older. This eventually led me to obtaining a bachelor’s degree in geology, interning with the National Park Service at the Hagerman Fossil Beds in Idaho, and working in mapping for a few years before returning to school for illustration and design in hopes to marry the sciences and arts together. While obtaining my geology degree I met my now husband who has a Master’s in Structural Geology, and worked in the natural gas field for five years before making the switch to environmental geology. Our family's income was supported by the fossil fuels industry for a time, and therefore we understand a decent amount of the ethics and controversy that is in the industry. However we are both very invested in the earth sciences and look forward to more sustainable tech preserving a better environment for the future.

Why I Moved Back to Vegas after Six Months in Austin

Las Vegas gets a bad rap. Known nearly exclusively for casinos and big celebrity performances on the strip (along with other stripping activities), it’s easy to assume that outside the strip, nothing is happening in Vegas. But the truth is, there’s a world of hidden gems in Vegas, which I personally discovered when I decided to move there from the east coast nearly a decade ago.

After seven years in Vegas, I decided to give Austin a try. Since I’d had an office for Grasshopper there for a few years, I was well aware of the many reasons it’s an awesome place to live – live music all the time, professional opportunity, a lake smack in the middle of town, a booming economy, great schools for the kids, and a general vibe of awesomeness. I just had to check it out.

But what I found out over the subsequent six months was that I’d been under appreciating Las Vegas. Austin’s great, but there’s a definite disparity between the hype and the reality. And honestly, Las Vegas has the opposite problem. I feel like it’s incredibly under-hyped. Six months into my Texas adventure, I picked up my family and moved back to Vegas, and I have zero regrets about it. Here’s why.

Cost of Living

Austin is the second most expensive city in Texas (second only to Galveston, a popular vacation spot filled with lux beachfront property). Outsized housing cost, whether you’re renting or buying, is a big reason for the price tag. Due to strict zoning restrictions and a fast-growing population, there’s not enough housing to go around, resulting in higher median home prices than the other metro areas of Texas. In Austin, the median home price is $360k, but in the nicer areas on the outskirts (West Lake, Lakeway) or the more historical neighborhoods in the interior of the city (Hyde Park, South Congress), the range gets much higher – $800k and up into the multiple millions.

Compare these numbers to Vegas, where the average home costs $280k, and you can get a beautiful four bedroom spot in some of the best neighborhoods in town for under $400k. A pretty stark comparison to Austin, especially if you have a couple of kids and need a little more space.

Housing is only one factor in cost of living. Other factors are food costs (groceries and dining out), healthcare, household services, and transportation. According to data from BestPlaces, both Vegas and Austin rank lower than the national average for grocery prices and notably higher than average for transportation. When it comes to healthcare, Austin ranks significantly higher than the national average, while Vegas is lower. Styles of state governance might have something to do with that discrepancy. I also found many household services in Austin were more expensive, from landscaping to cleaning.

Quality of Life

Cost of living surely has a direct impact on quality of life – if you can stretch your dollar further, chances are you will end up with a few more creature comforts. For me, that’s super important, but the environment I’m in has a huge impact on my quality of life too. So does how easily I can get from place to place. Fun things for my kids to do, traffic, proximity to great food and night life, and just general life amenities are all big quality of life factors for me as well. And honestly, Vegas checks pretty much every box better than Austin does.

The Great Outdoors

Austin is known for its beautiful natural places. Barton Springs and Town Lake run right through the center of the city, and a short drive takes you to beautiful hill country destinations, including state parks with larger bodies of water and endless hiking and biking. There’s also a rapidly expanding wine country just outside the city limits and into the hill country.

But truthfully, it’s so hot and humid in Austin and the surrounding areas that it can be demotivating to get outside and enjoy it. Furthermore, for the first time in my life, I developed allergies living in Austin. My kids didn’t fare so well either, which made hanging out in the great outdoors a bit of a disaster. Las Vegas has a much drier desert climate and a lot fewer allergens floating through the air. Plus, there are real mountains. Texas Hill Country is gorgeous, but it doesn’t really compare to the mountains of the Mojave Desert or the sandstone towers in Red Rock Canyon.

If you’ve only ever visited Vegas to hit the casinos or see a show on the strip, you might not realize the plethora of outdoor opportunities at your fingertips. Red Rock Canyon, a National Conservation Area, will give you some of the most amazing views you’ve ever seen. You’ll hike among glorious red sand stone rock formations, possibly run into some desert wildlife, and can even camp in certain areas. If you’re a rock climber – especially a sport climber – and haven’t visited Red Rock, be sure to add it to your bucket list.

Lake Mead is another major outdoors destination in Las Vegas. It’s a National Recreation Area perfect for boating, hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. Take a boat into crystal clear water and make your way through the gorgeous rock formations that line the lake. And if you’re not much of a camper, there are lodging options that still give you direct access the natural wonder of the area. The nearest city, Boulder City, is the home of the Hoover Damn and offers a ton of hiking and biking trails, in addition to two beautiful municipal golf courses.

Other great outdoor destinations include Mt. Charleston Regional Recreation Area (Mojave Desert mountains) and Havasau Falls and Creek (a tributary of the Grand Canyon!). The City of Henderson is just over fifteen miles from Vegas and jam-packed with parks and trails for hiking and sight seeing. It offers sixty-five well-maintained parks featuring open grass lands, playgrounds, skate parks, dog parks, lighted sporting areas, and more.

Traffic and Travel

If you’ve ever lived in or visited Austin, feel free to skip this section. You already know that very few cities rival the hectic gridlock of Austin’s rush hour. The problem is that Austin was never meant to be a big city of almost a million people. It has the infrastructure of a college town and has exploded into a major destination without the ability to expand one of its major thoroughfares, interstate 35. And that’s without the visitors for Austin City Limits or South by Southwest flooding the streets. Bring all those people in and you’re not going anywhere unless you leave after 10am, before 4pm, or well after 6pm.

Las Vegas is just the opposite. It’s a city built for massive tourism but maintains a relatively low local population (roughly 620k). When combined with neighboring Henderson, it ends up being roughly 1M. Most tourists don’t venture too far off the strip, so day to day life in Vegas is pretty traffic-free. Furthermore, because so many people fly in and out, McCarran International is a major airport that flies direct almost anywhere. Compare that to Austin-Bergstrom, a relatively tiny spot that usually sends connections through Houston, Dallas or San Antonio. Two wins for Vegas in the way of traffic and travel.

For the Kids

Admittedly, there’s a major problem with public schools in Las Vegas, and Nevada in general. For the most part, Austin has an awesome reputation for both public and private school education, due, at least partially, to a higher real estate tax. The state of Nevada is ranked 50th out of 52 states in education – not good. It was a big reason I moved to Austin in the first place. There’s just less money for public schools in Nevada than in many other states because it has both a low property tax (.77%) and no state income tax to go towards education. While Texas also has no income tax, property tax is more than double Nevada’s (1.86%).

The reality of poor public schools was a major setback for me until I discovered the private and montessori options. You have to do a little digging, but if you’re willing to do the work, you’ll find that in the end, your kids have great academic opportunities in Vegas, and they’re all pretty easy to get to, regardless of where in the city you live.

For fun with kids though, Vegas wins again and again. I mentioned the overwhelming natural beauty of the surrounding areas, but there’s a lot to do right in the heart of the city as well. The strip might not be the first place you’d think to bring your kids, but there’s the Adventuredome Theme Park, the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, and the Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N all right there, just to name a few. Not to mention, with the sheer volume of national music and performance acts coming through Las Vegas, chances are, a performer your kids like will be visiting at some point.

Food and Entertainment

Although Austin isn’t known for it’s food scene, that’s slowly changed in recent years. New creatives are coming in to spice up what has historically been a somewhat “meh” dining culture. Cool, creative fusion restaurants like Loro and Elizabeth Street Cafe are popping up all over the city and gradually elevating the food scene, which I definitely appreciate. That being said though, the draw just isn’t there compared to the caliber of cuisine in Vegas.

Owing to the fact that Vegas is an international tourist destination, you’ll find world class food of nearly every stripe in this city. Celebrity chefs the likes of Gordon Ramsey, Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Tom Colicchio, and Giada de Laurentiis all boast top quality restaurants in the most popular part of the city, but there’s phenomenal local talent off the strip as well.

Just to name a few, for local Thai food, Lotus of Siam was voted best in the country. Le Pho, a traditional Vietnamese spot offers the perfect bowl of pho and a DIY spring roll plate – fun to eat and delicious. Honey Salt, started by local restauranteur Elizabeth Blau, offers amazing farm to table cuisine, made with seasonal ingredients. And for a classic Italian meal, head over to Ferraro’s for a bowl of pasta or a generous osso buco.

Comparing Austin and Las Vegas isn’t exactly an apples to apples thing when it comes to music and entertainment either. Both cities have their merits. Whereas in Austin, you’re more likely to be serenaded by a local band or songwriter while you’re eating dinner on a regular basis, major acts usually only end up coming through for the major festivals a few times a year. It’s known as the live music capital of the world, but national acts don’t come through as often as they do Vegas. Home to upwards of twenty five music venues alone, Las Vegas hosts all manner of national music acts, performing artists and ensembles, and comedians. Just about anything you’d want to see live, you can find in Vegas on any given night of the week.

If you’re a sports fan, you’ll have to root for another city’s pro team as an Austinite, but Vegas has an NHL team (Golden Knights), and the Oakland Raiders are moving to Vegas for the 2020 season.

Proximity to Fun

As if everything I have already mentioned isn’t enough, Las Vegas is a short drive away from other major attractions in California, Arizona, and Utah. It’s kind of an amazing jumping off point. I love getting to enjoy all that Southern California has to offer without having to actually live in CA and endure the high cost of living there. Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Anaheim (home of Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Six Flags) are all a few short hours away, so we can pick up and head to the beach or a theme park for a weekend if we want. Go East instead, and visit Sedona, AZ or Brian Head, UT for a weekend of natural beauty and camping. We often drive to our house on the Colorado River in Arizona, an under 2 hour drive.

A Properly Hyped Vegas

When I was planning to move to Austin, so many people were excited to see me off. Austin has a great reputation all over the country for being a cool place to live. It’s progressive beacon in a sea of Texas red. It boasts an ever-growing tech scene and an amazing community of entrepreneurs. Monacres like “the live music capital of the world” and sayings like “Keep Austin Weird” make it famous. When you say you live in Austin, people pay attention and assume you have it made.

Not so with Las Vegas. Sometimes when I say I live in Vegas, I hear, “Oh, people live in Vegas?” Now you know the answer is a decided yes. People live in Vegas and actually really love living here because there’s tons to do. You get all the amenities of a big city and none of the setbacks. Little to no traffic, a major airport, phenomenal food, breath-taking natural beauty, entertainment, and lots of fun for the kids all make me proud to call Vegas home after my little soiree in Texas.

MARRIAGE FOUNDED ON THE ROCK

• In building engineering, the structure that lies under another structure, a base or foundation, is known as substructure; while the part of the structure above the ground is called superstructure.

- There cannot be superstructure without the substructure. The foundation of a building determines the strength of the building.

• Jesus said:

47. “Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:

48. “He is like a man building a house, who DUG DEEP AND LAID THE FOUNDATION ON THE ROCK. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house and could not shake it, for it was FOUNDED ON THE ROCK (well built).

- Now, the two houses mentioned in the above passage of the Bible were exposed to the same problem– natural disaster. Albeit, the one founded on the rock withstood the flood while the other that was not founded on the rock collapsed. The Scripture says:

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

Psalm 11:3(NKJV)

- For your marriage to stand against the billows, stand the test of time; it has to be built on the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word of God, the Rock of ages (1Corinthians 10:4; Revelation 19:13).

• Jesus was invited

- There was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and Jesus was invited. For disharmony and chaos to be avoided in marriage, Jesus has to be invited.

- The first step is to invite Jesus into your life. Accept Him as your personal Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9,10).

“Behold, I (Jesus) stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

• Single life

- Use your single life wisely.

“Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult (evil) days come…”

- If you claim to be born-again; you have to keep your body for Christ, do not defile your body– you belong to Him (1Corinthians 6:19,20; Ephesians 5:3-6; Romans 6:11-14).

• Flee youthful lust (2 Timothy 2:22).

- Sexual sin has become the norm, even perverted ones. In some part of the world, homosexuality–sodomy, lesbianism– has been legalised. They even call one ‘phone sex’ (Romans 1:26,27).

- Albeit, if you belong to Christ and you know your body belongs to Him, you will keep yourself for Him (2 Timothy 2:19).

• Fire place

- If you keep fire in the fire place, it will not do harm. However, if fire is taken out of the fireplace, it can cause damage– destructive and severe one for that matter.

- Sex is for marriage. Keep sex for marriage, keep your body for your would-be-spouse (1 Corinthians 7:2-4).

“Promise me, O women of Jerusalem, do not to awaken love until the time is right.”

• Look before you leap

- Do not rush into marriage because of your inability to control inordinate, excessive, sexual urge. Marriage may not solve the problem if you do not deal with it!

- Those who cannot discipline themselves in one area of their lives will find it difficult to do in other areas of their lives.

- If you cannot discipline yourself in food, you cannot fast; you may discover that you cannot discipline yourself in sex, in spending, and in other areas of your life.

- If you have the problem of inordinate sexual urge, impulse buying, extravagant spending etc. and you ask God to help you, He will– that is the essence of the Holy Spirit on the inside of the believers.

Hotter ‘n Tandems Hundred

With the sun still asleep, we were unloading the tandems. Many might think it to be ridiculous to be awake this early. For us, that barely scratched the surface of our insanity. Today, Marde and I, were riding our second Hotter than Hell Hundred on our tandem. In a year’s time we have forgotten the sting of the saddle sores, the heat of an unrelenting sun, the never ending headwinds. All we could recall was the satisfaction of finishing a hundred miles on our bicycle. At least that’s how we sold it to Donald and Amanda. “Get a tandem” we said. “Ride a hundred miles” we said. “It’ll be fun” we said. Donald and Amanda have a natural talent for the tandem. Whatever their weaknesses may be on single bikes, they are quickly overcome on a two seater. They ride faster and can go farther working together. In the few months they’ve shared the horsepower at the rear wheel, they’ve clocked in several high milage rides. Today, however, would be their first triple digit ride. That is, if they made Hell’s Gate in time.

Pre ride smiles

We find ourselves packed in with many other tandems, along with recumbents. Among our ranks are even a few recumbent tandems. Everybody needs a good challenge every now and then. At roughly 6:45, they release our rag tag renegade fleet of odd looking bicycles. The race for the gate is on! Thinking in race terms, makes the first miles hard. It’s not as tough physically as it is mentally. You have to pace yourself. Start too fast and you just won’t last. With the cool morning air and relatively flat road, it’s hard to not push yourself. This is, after all, the best you’ll feel all day.

In the initial chaos, we lose Donald and Amanda. The nice thing about the tandem is that I won’t lose Marde. We wind our way through a sea of flashing red lights and catch up to our tandem friends. Before we realized we’ve made it very far, we arrived at the first rest stop. We were ten miles into the ride already. Donald and Amanda were as excited as they were at the start, they were ready to hit the road again. A quick photo with the Beatles, a banana, and we’re off just behind the first surge of a 10K+ armada of single bikes that had finally caught up to us. With the weeble-wobble bikes spread out, it was easier to keep up with Donald and Amanda. That is, until the hills began. North Texas doesn’t offer the worst hills ever cycled. Still, a tandem is a slog as it progresses up them. The slog turns into a rocket as the handlebars angle back down though. This super speed will be thwarted time and time again, as single riders will eclipse us as we make our way up each hill. Brakes will get much use as we avoid running over the (now) much slower pack of riders. Occasionally, we are able to get around, but the slope turns back skyward and the tandem slows to molasses. This yo-yo effect continues all the way to mile twenty and rest stop two.

Pickles and cookies are scarfed down. Our metabolisms have ratcheted to high boil. From this point on, everything consumed will be turned directly into energy. Still feeling great, we get back on the road. The gate waits for no one. The sun has been up for awhile now. Luckily, we can’t see it. An overcast is hiding it from us and subsequently keeping the temps not so Hell like. We are not complaining. Well, except for the headwind that has developed. I’m complaining about that. This isn’t my first HHH though. Headwinds come with the ride. I know that and I still come back. The ride is definitely worth it, yet for this moment I will bad mouth this wind. A hard left takes us off a narrow two lane and back on Business 287. A shoulder and a recent repave has us clicking off the miles with little effort. The surrounding riders are now a mixed assortment. Mainly single riders, but still a fair number of recumbents and tandems remain. A plethora of color. I enjoy seeing the many different brands of bicycles and their approach to finding what works for the consumer. Marde is enjoying the latest train we’ve seen today. Donald and Amanda are simply enjoying the ride on roads the’ve never seen before.

A stampede of singles

We are coming into the sleepy town of Electra. Marde’s phone begins ringing. It’s our daughter Makaidi attempting to FaceTime us! Having just recently enlisting in the Navy, we are adjusting to a new life of not having her home. It’s a tough transition, but Marde and I are extremely proud of her choice to join the Navy. “What are y’all doing?” Makaidi asks. “Just riding” is Marde’s response as she pans the phone around allowing Makaidi to see the cyclists all around us. The conversation is all too short. Marde and I will take what we can get. The third rest stop is in Electra. There is an endless line of people doing the pee dance. Legs crossed while shifting side to side. Marde hears the music and joins in. I find myself making repeat trips back to the cookies as I kill time. I also top off our waters. With Donald and Amanda by our sides, we head out of Electra. A hard right sends us due north along with a tailwind. Oh, blessed free speed. If only for a few miles, we will savor this beautiful thing.

It’s a tandem life

Heading east on Texas 240, we are in full push to make Hell’s Gate before the 12:30 deadline. The clouds are beginning to break up, revealing a bright blue sky. We are still twenty plus miles away and the clock is ticking. The wind is hitting us on our right side. I miss the push of a pure tailwind. With the increasing sunlight, I am appreciating the cooling breeze though. A pure tailwind has a stagnate feel because you are flowing with the wind and not feeling it actually move. Find the silver lining. The cool breeze is our silver lining. Determined to take in the day’s full suffering, we push hard. We could easily pull back a little and miss the cut-off. It would mean twenty-five less miles. Our mental stress would be eliminated. It was, after all, completely self imposed. We could ride through the Sheppard Air Force Base. We have heard great things about riding through the base. If only we’d slow down and hurt less. Instead, we embrace the challenge a century presents. We want that one hundred miles! We make it to Burkburnett knowing we are close on time. Still full of excitement, we keep the speed up, blowing by the final rest area prior to Pyro Pete. “You still have plenty of time!” a voice calls out over a PA system. We are taking no chances. Full of hot air, Pyro Pete towers over cyclists anxious to get their picture taken with him. We too, are anxious. We are also relieved. We made it to Hell’s Gate! Donald and Amanda will make their goal today, provided they can tough out another thirty-eight miles.

After the gate, Marde and I relax a bit. At our more relaxed pace, we fall behind Donald and Amanda. Regret from skipping the last rest area creep in. This fat boy needs a break and takes one. Marde shares a protein bar with me. We don’t want to bonk now. A few miles later, we arrive at an official rest area. With the realization that we could have easily made it without our impromptu rest stop, we share a laugh. As we refuel, Donald and Amanda are prepared to leave. Pushing seventy miles and they are still smiling. Marde and I will spot them a head start while we grab a chair in the shade. Partly cloudy skies and vast expanses are easier to take in with the current pace. Farm houses, windmills, and strange old trucks catch the eye. Recent scientific understanding reveals how experiencing traumatic events can change the way our brains function. Especially with severe or repeated exposure, the brain produces signals that makes a person feel as though the event is happening again and again; which can impede healing and keep someone stuck in a pattern that induces excessive anxiety, promotes fear, sleeplessness, or primes them to seek relief via alcohol, drugs or other harmful substances.

Fortunately, there are promising new treatments for PTSD, one of which is the use of service animals.

Most people may not realize the tremendous value that therapy/companion/comfort animals have for the purposes of easing the suffering of those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD), particularly within the military. This is entirely understandable and stands to reason. Most people do not suffer from PTSD. For those that do, however, research abounds that confirms animals can be a crucial part of their recovery.

A large part of the despair associated with these invisible maladies is a deep sense of uselessness and being a burden to family and friends. I know this from personal experience, as I had sustained a severe spinal injury in 1992. I, myself, sank into that abysmal pit of feeling utterly worthless, useless and burdensome. The caring for an animal, especially one that’s been rescued, can help return one to a sense of being needed and useful. In my own case, it was nearly miraculous. The relationship between human and animal is wholly symbiotic. The person needs the animal for comfort and companionship, and the animal needs the love and caring of the human. It is a classic “win-win” situation. It sounds simple – and it is. That is why it works so well. However, it is not a panacea. It is just one method for the easing of suffering from PTSD. If you know someone struggling with this profoundly frightening and frustrating condition, please encourage their friends and family to connect them with a rescue pet. In most cases, it will be remarkably spiritually uplifting to both human and animal.

I am not a doctor. Nor am I (Ken Wahl) a member of the military. The event, jointly promoted by the International Catholic Migration Commission, Caritas Internationalis and the Center for Migration Studies of New York, came during a second informal thematic session of the Global Compact on “Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants"

In the address, Fr Czerny – whose section of the new dicastery answers directly to Pope Francis – spoke about the reasons driving the current, complex movements of migrants and refugees, which few would deny “have reached crisis proportions”, he said.

The most “honest, comprehensive and effective way of addressing the drivers of forced migration”, he continued, is “to ensure the right of all to remain in dignity, peace and security in their countries of origin”.

Speaking of the many reasons why people are forced to flee from their homelands, Fr Czerny pointed to the immediate need to stop arms sales to countries in conflict, end the unscrupulous exploitation of territories and resources, and open “new and accessible channels for asylum and legal migration”.

Finally, I am very happy to speak in the name of the Migrants & Refugees Section, whose mission is to assist the Church, its leaders and members and many other parties as well, to accompany people forced to flee in each phase of their trajectory: in their country of origin, during their transit, at their destination, and finally their possible return. To accompany, Pope Francis teaches, means to welcome, to protect, to promote and to integrate. Activating these four verbs would go far in fulfilling the promise of the New York Declaration and the purpose of the Global Compacts.

Few would deny that today’s large movements of refugees and migrants are very complex, often disorderly, unpredictable and dangerous; have reached crisis proportions; seem likely to continue if not increase; and currently constitute a most alarming issue or topic. They seem to clutter many minds with alarming statistics and fill many imaginations with distressing images.

To deal with today’s large dislocations responsibly, a first step is to employ adequate tools of analysis, rather than letting fear and self-interest prevail. On closer examination, there is much to appreciate rather than to fear, and much to do together rather than reject outright. For very plausible reasons, people opt to risk their lives in a dangerous journey hoping for better living conditions in country of destination. The total world scenario is made up of many millions of individual situations. Each one represents a particular reality to which fundamental rights apply, and the protection of those rights must always be a priority. This challenge calls us to steadiness of purpose and fidelity to our deeper values. Let these be the marks of the current thematic session and indeed of the whole Compacts process.

Everyone wants migration flows be “safe, orderly and regular”; the Sutherland report calls for their “management” or, better, for their “governance”. But these values can easily, if unconsciously, get reduced to control, national control. Control, as just one legitimate dimension, cannot be exercised in neglect of other essential factors, many of which are embodied in the right to remain. Human security takes precedence over national security.

The current informal thematic session, the second, wisely seeks to address “the drivers that create or exacerbate large movements”. It takes its orientation from Paragraph 43 of the New York Declaration which states:

We will analyse and respond to the factors, including in countries of origin, which lead or contribute to large movements. We will cooperate to create conditions that allow communities and individuals to live in peace and prosperity in their homelands. Migration should be a choice, not a necessity. We will take measures, inter alia, to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, whose objectives include eradicating extreme poverty and inequality, revitalizing the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, promoting peaceful and inclusive societies based on international human rights and the rule of law, creating conditions for balanced, sustainable and inclusive economic growth and employment, combating environmental degradation and ensuring effective responses to natural disasters and the adverse impacts of climate change.

Migration will be “orderly, safe, regular and responsible” (paragraph 16) only when people are really free to stay. To make today’s migration a choice, not a necessity, is an enormous challenge. It would seem to depend, inter alia, on nothing less than the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. To motivate and orient such an enormous worldwide coordinated effort, will surely take a reliable compass, a shared sense of direction. This is what the Holy See Delegation and the other sponsoring organizations wish to offer under the deceptively simple title “Ensuring the right of all to remain in dignity, peace and security in their countries of origin.”

To elaborate and promote the right to remain is deeply rooted in the Church’s faith and in her social teaching. Instead of putting the accent on control, promoting the right to remain is a deeper and more practical way of addressing the root causes. This then is our conviction: in order to prevent forced, involuntary and disorderly migration, which translates inevitably into unmanageable or ungovernable migration, there is a need to reaffirm the right to remain in one’s homeland and to live there in dignity, peace, and security. The right to remain includes access to the common good, protection of human dignity, and access to sustainable human development. These are rights which should be effectively guaranteed in one’s own country and by one’s own State. With these assured, then, migration can flow from a free choice.

And therefore the theme of this side-event: the right to remain is the indispensable basis or condition for the free choice to migrate. The right to remain is prior to, deeper and broader than, the right to migrate. The right to remain really addresses those drivers of migration which compel people to abandon their homes and countries and contribute to disorderly, unpredictable and dangerous migration flows.
