What if reincarnation? Like its Ullas soul or part of it, but Ruddiger doesn't necessarily have any of her memories, just has some really strong urge to be near Varian he can't quite understand himself. Some sense of comfort and care.

In the initial concept of vat7k, Ulla was essentially (un)dead and trapped in the library unable to pass onto the afterlife (unaware she cant go back, hence the posessing Varian thing when she found out). So what if she had tried so hard over the years to get back to the regular world but failed. The library has so many books with knowledge both science and magic, she could have found something she thought might work, didn't read the fine print bc she was in a state of panic, and it resulted in a patt of herself being reincarnated as Ruddiger.

She herself thinks the spell failed, the only side effect she really experiences is Ruddigers emotions affecting hers, so she can sense something is wrong during Vars villain arc and whenever hes in danger. But she doesn't know why she feels uneasy at those times.

Unrelated fun fact but Ruddigers eye color matches Varians hair stripe. Do with that information as you wish
