Marcel Delamare and his owl.
This will be a 3-painting situation, first with Marcel, then Dorothea then a painting of them together to celebrate WYL's anniversary (and the rewriting chapters lol). Will I ever finish this project? heh, likely not.
This painting took me about 12 hours, spread between three days. I'd say it's quite good for how fast I've done it. As usual, Aidan Turner is my main inspiration (straight-up face claim) for Marcel, I add a few tweaks like the birthmarks and stuff and I try to keep his eyes dark, though Marcel's are supposed to be dark grey iirc.
For this painting, I used Jonathan Bree's Sleepwalking album cover as the main color palette, for a couple of reasons, including that Sleepwalking is the most Marcel song I've heard so far. The cover is a blue monochrome with a nice range of values, I add a bit of coral to his skin just to make it less uniform than the cover. The owl has yellow eyes because I try to portray daemons as their own entities, so she shares some of his shadow blues, but her eyes have their own set of colors. She's very angular in shapes because I wanted to make her seem intimidating and uncanny, in a way. Marcel is very non-chalant, but as Marisa's brother, it's hard for me not to at least give him something to stand-out for, so the owl shows what he hides, in appearance more so than in nature.

William Tyler & The Impossible Truth — Secret Stratosphere (Merge)
Tumblr media
Secret Stratosphere by William Tyler & The Impossible Truth
It’s been a while since William Tyler released a full-length album of his own music, the most recent being Goes West, his 2019 foray into soft rock. A movie soundtrack, an ep , and a fantastic collaboration with Marisa Anderson have followed, all brimming with interesting ideas, and he’s presumably been in the studio cooking up something new. In the meantime, he has released a live recording from 2021. With Secret Stratosphere, Tyler returns to the classic rock sound of 2014’s Lost Colony ep — two of the three songs on which appear here — with a line-up that includes a conventional rhythm section and Luke Schneider on pedal steel.
There is a dad rock vibe to the proceedings (Tyler even name-checks Blue Oyster Cult and Rusted Root), from the accomplished soloing to the power chord crunch. Generally, the versions of Tyler’s compositions here don’t vary a whole lot from the studio versions apart from being fully electric and stripped down, though the lead-off track trades the AOR stylings of one of the better tunes on Goes West (the only one in the present set) for a proggy veneer. A stylistic pillar of post-rock, the slowdown before the big climax, is especially well-represented.
Secret Stratosphere doesn’t overlap with previous live sets Elvis Was a Capricorn (2012) or Live at Third Man Records (2016) but does draw on most of Tyler’s releases. It also includes one new tune (apart from a new ending grafted onto “Highway Anxiety” dubbed “Radioactivity”), “Area Code 601,” which Tyler introduces as a “Hawkwind Meets Charlie Daniels band number.” However, nothing quite so interesting develops; instead, heavy generic riffs create the impression that Dave Grohl may be waiting in the wings to launch into an anthemic chorus.
The recording has a definite live feel; Tyler talks up the crowd, which, though sounding a bit thin, responds enthusiastically, and the drums are way up front in the mix while the bass is more felt than heard. Schneider’s steel occasionally shines, as on the slowdowns before the big climaxes of “Whole New Dude” and “Gone Clear,” but more often it is in the background, filling the space often covered by keyboards.
Perhaps it is best to view Secret Stratosphere through the lens of the pandemic. Recorded in May 2021 (in Huntsville, Alabama), amid the first wave of vaccinations and the relaxing of many public health restrictions, the audience must have been thrilled to be back in a brew pub listening to live music, and Tyler sounds happy to be back in front of a crowd. In that context, the bar-band ethos makes perfect sense; this is music that would sound best after the third beer. I hope, though, that Tyler is preparing to offer up some fresh, forward-looking music soon.

Militarie Gun Unleashes Electrifying New Single "Thought You Were Waving" with Thrilling Video!
Tumblr media
Militarie Gun, the Los Angeles-based hardcore band, is back with their new single “Thought You Were Waving,” accompanied by a cheeky Neta Ben Ezra-directed video that portrays the band in unruly and dangerous situations. Premiered by Zane Lowe on his New Music Daily show, this track marks the first fresh material from the band since their acclaimed debut album, "Life Under The Gun," released last year. This new release, created with the talented Zachary Dawes (known for his work with Lana Del Rey, Sharon Van Etten, Bully, and Elton John), signals a promising new chapter for Militarie Gun. The single follows closely on the heels of “Gun Under The Gun (MFG),” a track created for the WWE 2K24 video game as the entrance music for Post Malone's wrestling character. Post Malone also included the band's hit "Do It Faster" on his curated playlist for the game's soundtrack, underscoring the band’s growing influence in the music scene. Militarie Gun has been on an international tear, recently wrapping up a series of headline and support shows with Hockey Dad in Australia. Their globetrotting schedule continues through the end of the year, highlighted by a highly anticipated hometown show in Los Angeles on July 25th, supported by Gouge Away, Heart to Gold, and Human Garbage. Festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Project Pabst, Thing Festival, Reading & Leeds, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock are also on the horizon. Additionally, the band will embark on a European tour with Lip Critic, Pluto The Racer, Never Yours, Chiefland, daysdaysdays, and Tripsun on select dates, and will join Manchester Orchestra for the 10-year anniversary tour of their album "COPE" across North America in September. Tickets for all upcoming shows can be found here. Earlier this year, Militarie Gun released "Live Under The Sun," a mini-documentary that showcases the band and their collaborators reimagining tracks from the "Life Under The Sun" EP at Manchester Orchestra’s Atlanta studio. Featuring guest performances from Manchester Orchestra, Marisa Dabice of Mannequin Pussy, and Christine Goodwyne of Pool Kids, this documentary highlights the dynamic and expectation-defying songwriting of bandleader Ian Shelton and the growing community around Militarie Gun. "Life Under The Sun" strips back a selection of songs from their debut album "Life Under The Gun," placing Ian Shelton’s intensely personal songwriting at the forefront. The EP includes standout tracks like "Never Fucked Up Twice" featuring Bully's Alicia Bognanno, "Very High (Under The Sun)," "My Friends Are Having A Hard Time" featuring Manchester Orchestra, "Will Logic" featuring Mannequin Pussy, and a cover of NOFX’s "Whoops I OD'd." "Life Under The Gun" was one of 2023’s most celebrated albums, earning praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, Revolver, Stereogum, SPIN, Paste, The FADER, and more. It landed on multiple best-of-2023 lists, including those from Alternative Press, The Ringer, UPROXX, Stereogum, and Rolling Stone, who noted that the album "takes everything that’s uniquely cathartic about hardcore and lacquers it with insanely catchy melodies." The album's infectious appeal was showcased in Taco Bell's ad campaign featuring "Do It Faster." Read the full article

Back to Black: Review
Chasing Amy
Tumblr media
With her signature look and soulful vocals, Amy Winehouse left an indelible mark on music and pop culture before her untimely death. But that’s why a film about her life presents such a challenge to film-makers. Is there any way of telling the story of the singer’s life - so often exploited in the tabloids - without simply retreading the tragic story that we already know? Thankfully, Back to Black just about pulls it off.
No stranger to a musician biopic with John Lennon film Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson has framed Back to Black as a way of giving Amy’s story back to her. Following Amy (Industry’s Marisa Abela) as she chafes against the limelight of her first album, it’s clearly more concerned with the key relationships that fuelled her greatest songs. But at the outset, Matt Greenhalgh’s script seems content to follow the rise-and-fall blueprint of every other biopic, running through key moments with the nuance of a Wikipedia entry. Yes, that means scenes where studio execs try and sculpt Amy in their image, and obvious set-up scenes that exist to explain the inspiration behind Amy’s songs.
Where Back to Black works best is in its portrayal of the doomed love story between Winehouse and on-and off boyfriend and drug addict Blake (Jack O’Connell). Played with swaggering blokey charm by O’Connell, you can completely believe the way Amy falls under his spell, their chemistry soaring over a game of pool in the back of a pub (it’s more romantic than it sounds). Their tumultuous relationship feels like the most authentic part of the film, and lays out the context for Amy’s issues with addiction.
Playing such a huge character, the film pretty much hinges on the lead performance. But what Marisa Abela lacks in physical resemblance, she more than makes up for in capturing the spirit of who Amy was - boisterous and playful, but a fragile girl beneath the surface. More impressive still is her ability to capture one of the most distinctive voices in music. While her North London accent wavers at times, her renditions of Amy’s songs will make it tough for you to separate the original from the cover.
Less successful is the way the film handles Amy’s relationship with her dad Mitch (Eddie Marsan) - which is to say, it doesn’t really handle it at all. In fact, there’s not a lot unearthed here that Amy enthusiasts won’t already know - people looking for more insight into Amy’s life are probably better off watching Asif Kapadia’s terrific documentary Amy. But if you want a reminder of the downsides of fame, packed with great songs and strong performances, Back to Black does exactly what it says on the tin.
While it lacks the soul and depth of some of Winehouse’s hit songs, Back to Black keeps you invested with captivating performances from Abela and O’Connell.
