she doesn't hear him at first. chiyo doesn't even realize jai's found her, back pressed against the wall of an alley, eyes squeezed shut, and holding her breath as she counts. when she exhales, it's stilted like chiyo's fighting with her own lungs, and when jai grasps her chin, tilting her head up to meet his eyes, he's met with a startled gasp and her panicked, brown gaze. she didn't want to be found, didn't want anyone to see her. it's ridiculous to be so overwhelmingly anxious because she lost jai in a crowd, and to feel helpless against her own body's reaction ignites a frustration that is unbearable. she hates this. she hates this.

but the panic melts into relief within seconds even as shame scorches her cheeks. chiyo presses her hands against jai's chest, focusing on the rise and fall of it and attempting to mirror his breathing. her eyes never leave his face but rather study the way his eyebrows scrunch when he's worried, the particular shade of grey his eyes are, the beauty mark just beneath his left eye, the slant of his nose, the curve of his mouth as he frowns. she lost him earlier, but he's here right now, chiyo reminds herself. there aren't people surrounding her, pressing against her from all sides. it's just jai, palms pleasantly warm against her jaw. she has nothing to be worried about anymore.

she leans into jai's touch without thinking and starts counting the strands of hair that hang in his face. " 'm sorry, " chiyo mutters, still breathless but visibly more relaxed. there is a tiredness in her voice, in the way her eyes become hooded. " didn't mean to worry you. "
