I fucken love nonbinary representation in media, I love it so much it makes me ache, but I can’t help but feel a sort of weirdness when the only nonbinary representation we get in a given media platform is from a singular assigned-gender group.

Stop me if I’m out of line here, but it just feels counterintuitive to have a cast of nonbinary characters who are entirely afab. Or entirely amab. Although I’ve literally never encountered the latter. It’s fucken weird, okay. If nonbinary representation in media is going to be taken seriously it needs to include people of all ‘sexes’ and of all body types. Any representation is better than none at all, but it would be nice to see a broader and more accurate representation of people and characters existing outside of the binary.

Im AFAB and heavily questioning my gender. I feel like so much discussion around dysphoria is centered around this very kind of active, aggressive dysphoria that causes you to hate your body, but for me i feel as if im sort of playing the role of a girl? it has its good moments, but i feel like its not me. its this kind of vague feeling thats always there. I cant imagine myself in a relationship as a girl. Only as a boy. Im not sure what i want from this... just to be told its okay? sorry lol

Hey, friend, it’s gonna be okay, alright?

Dysphoria can be hard, but what helps is trying to find the good things in life—train yourself to notice the positives. Even if it’s just little things. Maybe you feel like you’re in someone else’s life, but hey, the sun’s bright today, and there’s a flower on the sidewalk you didn’t notice before, and your friend had a bigger smile than usual, and slowly, bit by bit, you’ll start to be happier, and maybe your life isn’t so bad after all.

And while your life living as a girl isn’t ideal, it’s what you’ve go now, so learn to make peace with it. It isn’t great, but it’s not that bad, hey? 

If you feel disconnected from yourself, try to take a deep breath, and try to find parts of your body, just parts, that you like. Look in the mirror and see your eyes—look at the colours and light and know that those eyes will be lit up with happiness one day, know that your teeth will show again when you smile one day, know your hair looks wonderful in the light, and maybe your hands don’t look too bad, and hey, if you wear a baggy t-shirt, maybe your body all in all isn’t too bad either!

If the room’s too dark, try to focus on the light streaming in from the window and the plant growing through the cement, and slowly, the darkness will begin to fade away.

And, my friend, I know what it’s like to play the role of a girl, believe me, to feel like you’re the actor playing the role of a main character in someone else’s life, when your life hasn’t even had a chance to begin. 

And my advice for that is to make peace with it. You’ll have to play that role for a few more years before the curtains can draw and the actor’s life can begin, but for now, it’s gonna be okay. Take a deep breath and grit your teeth through the misgendering and the days you feel disconnected from yourself, and know that it’s going to be okay. 

Find a way to have a bit of your own life where you can be who you are, maybe with close friends who’ll use the right name, with online friends who’ll always gender you correctly, on discord and tumblr, if the real world won’t accept you.

In regards to gender questioning—just do what makes you happiest and everything will begin to fall into place, I promise you. Take your time, there’s no rush! Whether you never stop questioning or you find a label tomorrow, it’s going to be okay, alright?

Endlessly asking yourself “what am I? What gender am I?” is never going to help, so just—take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay. Do what makes you happy. Maybe using a certain set of pronouns or a certain name makes you happy, or maybe using your birthname makes you happy, maybe masculine clothes make you happy, or maybe feminine ones do! 

Do what makes you happy and don’t worry about labels, just grab the nearest thing that fits like nonbinary or genderqueer or transmasc, or even go unlabelled! Be happy!!

Just, take a deep breath. If the next week seems too hard to face, take things day by day. If the next day seems hard to face, know that if you smile and look for the light, the next hour won’t be so bad.

Babe wake up im going to rant about my ocs lore because im bored

I write angsty stuff for my ocs oops-

When i first started making my characters they were very different in alot of ways and they were very different from what they are now. But i some how managed to glue all the chaos of my ocs together into a semi-coherent story. I went through an insane amount of world building with myself and i honestly dont think ive ever writen or typed any of it out before! its all just up in my head (and you know my memory is trash so ive probably forgotten of alot of things i made before lol). Anyways- i have two main story lines for my characters. Ethan's story, and Vevlet's story. Although i must admit Ethan's story is less complex than velvets simply beacsue it acts as a story of prequeal to Velvets story line. (Alternate realities that happen to have effect on each other basically- we love space time junk)

Ethan's world is very similar to ours, the most similar out of any of my fantasy worlds lol. Ethan's story revolves around self-discovery. I mean for it to be a wholesome/lighthearted thing that quickly leads up to dark undertones (spoilers lol). Ethan's story begins with Eef pre-transition (AFAB to NB). We get to see Ethan learn about themself and have fun exploring emotions and what it means to be alive. Ethan comes from a run-down family (mom khs, dad mia). So he lives with his adoptive parents (who i have yet to design and think about- theyre lesbians 100% though). A major moment for Eef is meeting his partner Seth. As you already know Ethan and Seth are cute ass boyfriends and stuff but guess what! im jammed their story full of angst and edgy shit bc i "wrote" most of this when i was hella depressed! Anyways Seth's family is like moderally welathy, wealthier than most i would say. Seth catches feelings for the emo chick ofc (forgot to metion Eef was definately a hot goth girl before he transitions).... uh yea anyways seth ends up flirting and crushing on eef and eef is like yea sure im bored and sad why not. and they end up dating after a while. Theres an important moment in their relationship when Ethan take Seth to this dead tree. THis dead tree is very important also bc it is where his mother hanged herself, and Ethan doesnt quite remember that bc he was very young when it happened, but he knows it as a place of comfort and he goes there alot when he feels sad or alone. this tree could be taken as symbolizim but heheh ill never tell. anyways Ethan is like yo my fevorite tree and Seth is like wtf okay bro ily and all but why a dead tree with an unstable tire swing?? ANd ethans like idk but i like it here reminds me of my childhood (op my guy) and they spend the night there. Also when ethan comes out to seth as nonbinary seth is just like ok,,, because hes bisexual lol. anyways time skip and Seth has some addiction problems once he graduates, long story short- Ethan doesnt like it bc his dad was a druggie so he trys to help Seth and Seth raises his voice and ethan is tiny compared to his bf so hes naturally like terrified of being hit and he suddenly feels his world of happy and peace he build back up bieng destroyed once again so he heads to his mothers dead tree and decides life isnt worth it anymore, and he hangs himself in the exact spot his mother did.... once seth comes off one of his highs or whatever hes like- oh fuck i yelled and acted agro to my traumatized partner. and he immedatly goes to the tree bc its Ethans favortie spot but its to late. regret is the only emootion anymore... its over for them.

now youre probably wondering how the absolute hell does that tie into velvets lore?? well do i have a tale for you. Velvets sotry begins on her 21st birthday, she is out for drinks with her douchebag bf and her bestfriend. several drinks later she yells over blaring club music shes going to the restroom, and as shes walking back she sees her bf and her bestie making out and she doesnt even say anyhting and walks out alone. She is making her way back to her apartment very tipsy. She then hears a vechile driving beside her, she cant make out anyhting theyre saying and the people in the car get out and before she even relises whats going on shes thrown into the vechile and is being beaten and yelled at. She passes out as theyre driivng to somewhere. When she next awakes she is in a barn-looking place. Concreate walls painted red and straw all over the floor. she cant stand, her legs stung and so did her entire body. for several days- she doesnt know how long she stayed in this place unable to move or do anything. Weak and starving, she gathered up her last bit of strength and hung herself on a low board (havent really worked out the details on that scence bc i keep changing my mind but she does hang herself). Cut to a space of nothingness- legit nothing- exactly its impossible to imagine nothing. In the nothing sits velvet all skin and bone, and then an entity, a hooded figure with long hair, sits next to her. No words are spoke, but the entity looks at velvet longingly. Then it tears out its eye- just full on plunges its hand into its socket and rips it out. bloody mess honestly. the entity hands its eye to velvet, and she takes it. there is no thoughts here, no sound, only actions. Cut once more to a coriners room place? ya know the place with dead bodies and tables and shit- anyways a bright light emerges from dead!vevlets chest and surrounds her entire body. *cue stunned doctor mans* Velvet arises from her death with her scars healed over and... wings. Yup shes an angel now. I mean her world already had monsters and things of suppernatural belonging but- angels are rare. She makes 1 of 2 angels in their relam as of current. Angels are "made" from regrets. Regret overflowing from two sources- one long dead and the other recent. This is where ethan comes in. Ethan's regret from how he died was powerful and sad, powerful enough for his spirt- an entity- to reach Velvets. Velvet too, had much regret in her death. So young and so many things that could have been avoided. In the days following up to her death in the barn/cellar she only felt regret. Regret for all she did and all she didnt do. So much pain summoned the entity. Their powerful forces of regret pulled them together and allowed Velvet to return- but at a price for the both of them. the entity lost its eye- symbolizing a loss of humanity and conscientiousness. While Velvet lost herself, she no longer can view her world in the same way. She has severe ptsd- like episodes and halucinations. She cant go back, she has to live through he own grief. Velvets appearnace also changes quite a bit. Her hair got longer, she has two sleek gray wings on her back, and- one of her eyes are purple now. why does it hrut her to see that eye? why is it all so familiar yet far away. Her human brain can hardly understand all the changes. But she was gifted this- she knows she must try. And luckily for her society sees angels as higher beings. They are given the umost respect but they are also greatly feared because of how misterious their origins are. The only other known angel meets with velvet quite alot through her story, he will act as a sort of guide/plot device to make things a bit easier for myself (havent worked out his lore tho or even a design for him hjbfkjsdb). Anyways im tired and its 1:35 am so thats all the lore you get for now, plus its the stuff ive thought about the most so- i dont really want to think any furtherb ahead yet lol. to many little things to work out...... i love creating but oml typing hurts after an hour or so-

Herd au

I wanted to add to (one of) my head canons (this one goes along with the Pinkie Pie Headcanon post I made). This will be about the mane six, as well as some other characters.

Okay! In this AU (I might turn it into an actual story but I'm not sure. Definitely gonna do drawings based on it)

Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash are a herd (closed? polyamorous triad) and all three of them are transstallions(All of their names will remain the same as I don't feel like they are necessarily feminine or masculine).

Rainbow(I will also refer to him as Dashie or Dash) is the most masculine of the three, Pinkie is kind of in the middle, being kind of masc sometimes, femme sometimes, and sometimes a combo of the two, and Flutters is usually rather feminine.

Rainbow Dash is gay(questioning, but gay is what he has come up with for now, you will see later on), Pinkie is Pan, and Flutters is Bi, they are also all on the Ace spectrum.

Rainbow is the tallest of the three, Flutters is the shortest, and Pinkie is a bit taller than Flutters. Both Pinkie and Flutters are chubby, Pinkie being a bit chubbier than Flutters(Pinkie loves food and is not ashamed to admit it), while Dashie is rather slim and muscular(he also loves to eat but he has a very high matabolism). Pinkie has the shortest mane of the three, and Fluttershy has the longest.

As stated in my Pinkie headcanon, He is autistic(and adhd), as is Fluttershy. Fluttershy also has Social Anxiety Disorder and Generalized Anxiety disorder. Dashie is Diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia (which is part of why he didn't read much before that time he was in the hospital), and it is thought that he is also autistic, but he has not yet been diagnosed.

Fluttershy's favorite stims are stimming with music(this varies and he usually prefers to have music anyway), various body stims, colorful lights (when they aren't too much for him), soft textures, swings, he likes soft movements and calm things, he also tends to flap (wings and hooves) when he's greatly excited about something and can also get loud at these times (like when he saw spike the first time). Fluttershy loves tight hugs when he gets overwhelmed, they help him calm down immensely. Fluttershys skin is very sensitive(even more sensitive when he's overstimmed), so he is picky about clothing (when he wears it. His coat helps prevent some irritation). Some of his special interests are animals, animal care, and fashion. Rainbow on the other hoof prefers to move fast and is usually constantly moving in some way, flying is one of his favorite stims. When Rainbow gets overwhelmed(which doesn't happen very often) he is very sensitive to touch and lights, so it's best for him to be in a familiar place with dim lights (like certain places in his cloud home or Flutter's cottage).

All three of them wear clothing from time to time, when they do Dashie prefers scene, emo, and comfy styles of clothing, Pinkie also likes scene and other colorful styles of clothing as well as some pastel styles (like fairy kei), Flutters prefers pastels and comfy is his default (he loves loose flowy things, and adores dresses and skirts).

When the three aren't working at their respective jobs or spending time with their friends, they are spending time together (usually at flutter's cottage as it is the easiest to get too(compared to Rainbow's) and the quietest (compared to the Cake's).

Also, I put closed with a question mark after the bt about them being a herd, because they are considering adding Twilight to their herd. Twilight is questioning their gender so they use they pronouns for now. They are intersex(which is part of the reason they use the pronouns they do) as well as autistic. (Note, Flutters is intersex as well and Pinkie and Dashie have both physically transitioned). Twiley is bi.The herd all loves spending time with Twiley.

Twiley special interests include magic, books, an learning.

Pinkie and Dashie are the most outgoing of the four, with Flutters being the most shy, Twiley having the hardest time understanding other ponies. Twilight is in between Rainbow and Rarity height wise.

Next are Applejack and Rarity.

Rarity is a Trans mare. Applejack is a stallion (born that way but they thought he was a filly until he hit puberty and developed properly, but he knew from when he was younger what he was). Rarity had supportive parents and transitioned early on, first with growing out her mane and changing her name and pronouns, then physically(through magic) transitoning to the way she wanted to look. She is one of the tallest of the mane six. Apple jack is the tallest. Applejack is also the strongest, thought the others are strong in their own ways. Rarity and Applejack are both bi. Rarity is diagnosed with ocd and autism. Her main special interest is fashion. Applejack isn't diagnosed with anything but the mane six isn't so sure he's nurotypical. They do know he's stubborn as a mule and can be rather resistant to change as well as quite possibly have dyslexia and discalculara(he's always had problems with reading and math but he hasn't let that stop him.)

Okay, now the CMC.

Applebloom is afab (assigned filly at birth) genderfluid(trying he/him and they/them at the moment) and pan , Sweetie is acab (assigned colt at birth) questioning (currently trying out she/her) and pretty sure she is bi, and Scoots is a pan trans boy. They are trying out being a herd together(but if that doesn't work they will still be friends). Scoots can't fly well (still aren't sure why), Sweetie has difficulty walking sometimes(and needs help from the others when this happens), and Applebloom has attempted to get sweetie to use a walker that he/they built for her when she has trouble but she fears it will make her look weak. Scoots is adhd, and sweetie is autistic and has hearing processing difficulties, Applebloom has a lot of the same problems his/their brother Applejack does. Applebloom and Scoots are the same height, and Sweetie is a bit taller than them.

Babs is afab questioning(thinks they may be a trans colt or maybe a demicolt but they aren't sure, uses they for now) and is pan. Babs has hearing problems because when they were born they had ear infections in both ears and has scar tissue from those infections as well as others. They don't have a massive amount of problems because of it, but they can't hear as well as other ponies their age and it's worse on the right side so it's best to be on their left side and have them facing you when talking to them. Babs also only has three legs, being born without their front right leg. The CMC and the Mane six are understanding and do their best to help Babs in any way they can. Babs has a very advanced magical prosthetic that helps immensely and a hearing aid for the ear that has more damage.

Spike is a nonbinary transgirl and questioning her sexuality (and if she is ace or not).She is pretty sure she is panromantic.

TenderTaps is a cis gay colt.

Some family of the mane six now.

Big Mac a cis stallion, Pansexual.

Shining Armor is intersex and acab(like Twiley) and she realized early on that she was both but identified more as a girl and wanted to use feminine pronouns. Cadence is a transstallion who only realised it a little while ago. Flurryheart(taking after her parents not only with her wings and horn but is also intersex like her mother) is still young and they are waiting until she gets old enough and she can decide for herself what she is. They use she/her pronouns for her as she was assigned filly at birth.

I think that's enough for now. Note I haven't seen the newest seasons and I may or may not change things in this headcanon (due to the show and personal preference ) in accordance with this. I will probably also add more as I come up with it.

Same size-difference anon, I've seen some TFA MegOP where Megs is the female and OP is the male, and let me tell you that I'm pretty sure because this goes against the mainstream dynamics that I *love* it, even though MegOP isn't really my favorite ship. As for cygate, yes I don't get why I still see lots of male!Cyc when his avatar was shown to be a strong, elegant woman. Her and a little bf (or gf) would be 1000x's cuter.

like, arcee. i rarely look for anything with Arcee despite the fact that she’s my deadass favorite character outside of literal megatron, but you know, the way she gets treated in fic just makes my fucking skin crawl half the time and so its!! just not worth it. ill stick to art and the canon shit

Luz: honestly i saw a post involving genderfluid luz and i can't get that out of my head. Generally no pronoun preference, but gets very specific Days where if you don't use a specific set of pronouns gets depressed and Self Doubt.

Amity: Nonbinary *lesbian Amity. I think they liked they/them pronouns as a kid and Willow to this day still uses them for Amity despite their parents disapproval. Willow, Gus, Eda, King and Luz are the only people (besides eventually Boscha and Skara + Edric) that use the right pronouns immediately.

Eda: Gives me massive i don't give a fuck vibes, like as long as you respect their name Eda does not care what pronouns are used. Genderfluid-ish vibes in the sense that their gender varies from time to time, but will accept any pronouns like Luz.

King: doesn't really understand the pronoun thing in reference to themselves, just lets people use he/him pronouns because someone in this family has to have a stable gender goddammit.

Willow: I live for trans willow. Just, Willow who was this adorable little kid and whose parents knew the second she'd screech when they tried to cut her hair. Willow who had good parents in the queer support area, but not so good in the listening area. A Willow who doesn't really remember a time she wasn't treated like a girl.

Gus: He/they. No reason behind it. He/they and achillean.

hey you posted something about "i rec anime. its what i do" (as a funny guide to troubled birds edit!) and i would love some! i am not really familar with anime to be honest because alot of fanservice (sexulation of kids! and queerbaiting! but no representation!) really hinderd me, but i want to expend my horizon/not judge a whole big media form on this. i love team feels (serious power of friendship/love saving the day? sign me up) aka shaman king, digimon, yu gi oh. a newer one i loved was

contin: a newer one i liked was sweetness and lighting (almost no fanservice, did not go the teacher/student route! sweet kid! a big found family!!) i tried Izuetta the last witch - because i heard it was gay but broke it off because of the adult woman fondels teen girls chest-joke. also if possible no world war 2 stuff, i find that a very sensitiv topic that is almost never handled with grace.

first of all thank you very much for the message!! i love recommending anime (especially to new comers). :> second, i’m sorry if this is late, tumblr doesn’t tell me when i get new asks and there’s no dates on when they’re sent either. 

i agree quite a lot honestly, that’s the kind of stuff that turns me away from a lot of anime too. but while there is a lot of that stuff there’s also a lot without so hang in there if you can, there’s a lot of anime gems to be watched. 

March comes in like a lion. March is about a young, depressed shogi player and essentially overcoming that depression and trying to make it as a professional shogi player. it’s a slice of life drama with amazing visual story telling and expressive figurative language. this anime can make you feel very warm and fuzzy. the family feels are definitely there since the three sisters essentially adopt Rei and better yet there’s no fanservice. 

Haikyuu!!a volleyball sports anime. the characters have really dynamic personalities and it’s as funny as it is interesting how they interact with one another, so much so that it still has the potential to be enjoyable even if you hate sports. it’s more shounen like yugioh and digimon than March is. there’s no fanservice but that’s partially because there’s hardly any female characters. a lot of people ship the boys, which is totally okay to do, but that’s not the creator’s intent and they’re all just friends (so no queerbaiting is what i’m getting at here.) 

The King’s Avatara Chinese anime i enjoyed recently. it’s about a bunch of adults who play mmorpgs competitively for a living, the main character being the best of them since he’s been playing for 10 years. the main appeal of this is watching this guy beat and/or trick these other stuck up, haughty professionals and bringing them down a notch. and then rounding up his own team of weirdos and bringing down those pros together. some of the girls’ avatars are videogame-esque (therefore have kind of revealing outfits,) but the actual girls look like adult women and are treated as adult women. 

Tsuritamaanother sports anime (fishing this time) only it’s got a lot of sci-fi elements as well. it has that close group of friends saving the world thing going for it too. it’s a weirder experimental anime so i’d say give it at least two episodes before deciding whether you’ll watch it or not. again, not a lot of female characters so no fanservice, but some scenes could be interpreted as queerbaiting? Haru and Yuki actively live together and Haru likes physical affection a whole lot. 

Hunter x Hunter most like Shaman King as an action adventure shounen series. team saving the world feels. it can get bloody and also very sad though so beware. it’s mainly about this 11 year old kid, Gon, trying to find his father who left him, but there’s so many sub plots and side adventures that findind his dad takes a back seat to other more interesting things. a little fanservice-y but very rarely (if you like this you can also check out Yuu Yuu Hakusho which was created by the same person and has similar story telling, haven’t watched it though so i can’t say anything on fanservice or queerbaiting)

for actual gay representation, that’s not weird and fetishy, you could try these things as well: 

Doukyuuseia quiet slice of life about two boys in high school with very different lives. it’s slow and calm feeling. it has some really cute, funny moments as well. 

No.6gonna start by saying the novels are better but it’s the anime that made me want to read the novels so i’ve gotta give it props for that. it’s set in a dystopian future and Shion, one of the lead characters, lives in a very authoritarian city who is later rescued by Nezumi. it can be horribly morbid. alongside the fact that Shion and Nezumi eventually develop a romantic relationship, there’s also a trans boy/nonbinary kid named Inukashi. they’re implied to be afab but they only ever refer to themself with masculine or nongendered pronouns.

Maria Watches Over Us i’m kind of blindly recommending you this, since the only girl gay things i’ve seen have been either queerbaiting or bad. however a person’s who’s opinion i trust said this was a solidly written romantic drama. so there’s that.
