oh my god the only part of the LOTR movies (the part where Smeagol frames Sam and the ensuing split between Frodo and Sam before Shelob's lair) that I vehemently dislike IS NOT A PART OF THE NOVEL?!

#i shouldve guessed really #Tolkien knew better #don't get me wrong i greatly admire the movies and how close they managed to stay to the source material #but i always took issue with that whole ordeal in the movies #it feels so themetically and characteristically inconsistent. so tagged-on #and now i know why #it WAS tagged on #listen #every step that is taken by the fellowship had to happen that exact way for the story to unfold as it did #the split between frodo and sam though? resolved within a handful of scenes and never mentioned again with no further bearing on the story
