Saw your tags about Niko as the principal and I just properly looked at her face when she looks at the case file name and it’s like sad happy many emotions - I feel way more than just looking at some random file!

exactly my thoughts! this shot was very deliberate. she's supposed to be this immortal, level, not-attached-to-anything being, but you can cleary see her face goes through this complex journey of: curiosity, then a flash of rememberance, surprise, the proud and wistful smile, before it turns into an almost painful and choked-up realisation. look at the way her fingers curl into her collar, and how her brows crunch.

i'm dreadfully curious how much of niko sasaki is in the principal. did she keep her memories? how old is she, really? is it a disguise, or the real age she properly moved onto the afterlife? i guess we'll have to see if steve yockey drops more lore on the way!

man i forgot how… kind the language in this book is. even though its a sad read with a lot of really tragic and difficult scenes, the prose in this book feels kind of like a mother’s hug comforting her crying child.

this comes immediately after such a sobering opening- nothing dramatic, just a pregnant cat that has been walking in a rainstorm after being abandoned by her owners and establishing that she’s not just helpless- she’s horribly alone. and when she finds shelter, the trees “watch over her”- a description that could have been sinister in another book, but here, it’s to show that Calico won’t always be alone- that nature itself cares about her. it’s so sweet
