blues mock trial part 1/?

(this came from me mentioning something about snuggy in the blues discord server, and then quinn [shoutout quinn] said snuggy would be good at mock trial and then i realized i could give an opinion on how every single blues player would do at mock trial. SO now here we are)

jordan binnington - plays the expert witness (mostly for the defense) every. single. time. he is so dry and monotone that it works. his character is “sarcastic”. he can’t really do anything else, but that’s fine because he’s the expert. no one expects him to be trying to make jokes or show emotion so it’s a perfect fit. he just has to remember a whole expert report on top of an affidavit but he ends up being good at that. sometimes you think he’s boring on the stand and then he absolutely shines on cross examination and fires off some snappy comeback with no warning that gets his score bumped up a couple points.

joel hofer - great character witness, and actually a decent attorney as well. gets kinda frustrated when making arguments sometimes but if he just relaxes then he’s fine. he likes arguing enough that he enjoys the activity overall. loves to do a dramatic opening statement. has the type of energy that works for directing a more lighthearted or funny witness a lot of the time. 

jake neighbours - definitely got dragged into this by joel, who got dragged into it by jordan, who got dragged into it by schenner. is trying really hard to be a good middle (no statement) attorney and is definitely improving. but at the same time his brain is not completely built for this. would be a hilarious witness if he could focus on remembering his lines. instead has had several mishaps in trial with joel as his attorney where joel asks him a (completely scripted and planned out way ahead of time) question from their direct and he blanks on the answer and just stares at joel from the witness stand and joel nearly kills him because they just went over this on the fucking 8 hour drive up here!

brayden schenn - your classic decently overconfident male attorney. thinks he is incredible at this. is not necessarily, but he sure is loud and a man so many judges will be swayed by him. often insists on being jordan’s attorney bc he thinks they work well together. they do, but jordan would be better suited with a lawyer who can handle expert witnesses better. bc brayden cannot cross a good expert to save his life. so his direct with jordan will always be fine, since they can work on it well ahead of time, but if he’s a lawyer for the plaintiff and then has to cross jordan’s character (played by someone from a different team) then things start falling apart. the same is true if he is a defense lawyer but gets stuck with crossing the plaintiff’s expert. basically, do not trust him with crossing an expert because he doesn’t match their energy. at all. is often the closer, but he probably should not be trusted with a statement as much as he is. 

jimmy snuggerud - an AMAZING defendant. he’s so innocent. he wears a little sweater and a nice little button down shirt underneath and looks at the jury with his big brown eyes and who could convict him? no one. that’s who. when the defendant isn’t a witness that can be called, he plays some character with a similar amount of emotion needed in their role- the kind of emotion that garners sympathy from the judges before they remember none of this is real. he scores very well and remains so believable on cross.

He wouldnt say much when you started ranting about your face, and if he ever caught you looking at yourself in the mirror with disgust, he would simply ignore it for the moment thinking that in anytime you will realize that youre pretty and not as hideous as you think you are

...Still, if you get too dense about it, its time for Luka to shut you up! with facts more than anything. He would use your visual score, standards and any tool that could prove his point

The most reassuring way he has to make you feel better and not hideous—is simply sitting you by his side and kissing or biting every part of your body, lingering on the ones he likes most. He's pretty sick, honestly. Im sure he has licked your face once or twice

You couldnt help but whine when your attempt at a new makeup style ended in failure—not even a different brand, thousands of tutorials, or countless tries could make you stop feeling hideous. You started to feel uncomfortable in front of the mirror. Maybe ignoring your reflection would make it better? It didnt matter, its always the same feeling anyways. Quickly, you began wiping off your failed makeup attempt when you sensed a presence walking through the hall. Peeking out, you caught a glimpse of blonde locks—it was Luka

Once you ended up washing your face and went to the living room you found Luka sitting on the couch looking at the Tv, a program presenting the secrets and photoshoots of the stars in Alien Stage— of course he was one of them. Was he studying his opponents? admiring himself? Who knows, you sitted on his side without saying too much because you were already feeling that Luka was tired of your low esteem even if you discreetly saw him from the side of your eye, he noticed it since you entered the room, but he didnt call you out until a couple of minutes later. - "Whats on your mind?" - Luka asks bluntly without taking his eyes out of the TV. You hesitated for a moment, but at the end you talked just like Luka wanted. Your own thoughts camed out in almost a soft murmur since you were embarassed of them:

"i...i didnt like the makeup our guardians gifted me, not because of the brand or something! but because it doesnt fit me i guess, not even that makeup managed to go well with my features..." - You sigh frustated leaning your head back into the couch. You tried to soften your words as much as you could, but you knew very well that you could rant for more than three paragraphs about why your face didnt look good with anything Yet, your words managed to irritate Luka— there was no way you could be that stupid. So, in a chance for you to actually hear him for once and change your opinion about yourself, he pinned you against the couch— not giving you the opportunity to escape in anyway from this scolding. Luka was planning to actually do this until your mind understanded for once the value of your beauty "Stop saying such stupid things, if you were ugly you wouldnt be in Alien Stage from the start, you wouldnt even enter on the top of visuals for the aliens, cant you see the reality, dear?" - He looks intently into your eyes, not giving you the chance to escape or avert your gaze. It doesnt matter how surprised you look at his words or if you start protesting about him being on top of you, he wont let you go Luka continues - "What's so hard to understand about how pretty you are? Do I need to be more affectionate for you to get it? Well, Im tired of waiting for you to change that mindset of yours. So, I guess its my turn to get inside that little head of yours…" He takes one of your hands, kissing and biting your knuckles lightly without breaking eye contact, almost forcing you to see things his way instead of drowning in your awful thoughts

Luka started to kiss, lick or whatever he managed to consider it would show you the affection you needed to feel for yourself too. He focused on the features of your face— the ones you always complained didnt match the rest. He took his time, longer than you expected, almost like a slow, drawn-out torture meant to make you surrender

When he finally reached your lips, it was a slow yet deliberate kiss, lasting longer than the usual ones Luka gave you— short, always meant to satisfy him when he needed it. He found it pretty amusing when you pouted, wanting more

When he pulled away, his eyes remained fixed on your embarrassed expression, boredom flickering in them. He didnt let you hide behind your hands. Instead, in a serious and firm tone, he whispered into your ear:

"No, youre not moving from here. Youre not leaving until you accept how gorgeous you are, until you give up those shitty thoughts and finally acknowledge how your face can give you so many advantages with the aliens votes and everything."

i cant quite express what i mean, but any conception about what's important in all human lives will find many many, possibly the majority, perfectly normal (i.e. not particular miserable for their time and place) lives that do almost nothing to touch on those themes. life cant be about love (in anything in the modern sense), life can't be about friendship (in again, the modern sense), life can't be about family, life can't be about pleasure, or about great achievement, or art, it can't even be about god. i think any conception of what makes human lives valuable has to have a vast number of independent senses of the good, if it wants to see the way all these normal lives are valuable, if it doesnt want to see the human life lying behind us as "mostly a waste"

and importantly....i think such a conception is correct! that when we look on these lives, it is only by contorting our minds that we can dismiss these lives. human lifespan is limited, the ways human life can have value are unlimited, so every life (well, not every life. lots of lives) is virtuous in ways that other lives have not been as virtuous. and this isnt against striving towards virtue, its very in favor of striving to virtue! but the point is that striving toward virtue isnt like there's some score (or small set of scores) that everybody gets, and youre always going to be lower (and higher!) on the virtue score than someone else, and your position on the virtue score matters. its more like....math research! that there are a million ways to be virtuous, vita brevis, ars longa, even if everybody set their heart on being virtuous as hard as possible, we could never come close to "completing" or "perfecting" virtue

i think "moral saints" really got to me. but i mean, you can see the vision im pointing at right? you can still be BAD at math research. but also, comparing at math research is silly. there's only so many math geniuses, and math is infinite! if math is going to get better, it needs all hands on deck. comparative advantage. its *comparative advantage* at virtue!

What its like hugging the creepypasta characters

jeff and ben and toby are the only ones written as strictly platonic but the others can be seen either or! kind of wanted to do something easy for creepypasta characters (+ masky and hoodie) since i missed writing for these bozos </3 that said requests for creepypasta are open so crp fans go ham! return to this blogs roots! rah! written more as a rating as well as how it actually feels to hug them and not really a scenario that leads to you guys hugging yk?

SLENDERMAN:

very tall and skinny, maybe even boney. im still trying to decide if slenderman/slenderbeings have internal organs/bones/ect... though i can say that slenderman is fairly cold. hes not ICE cold, but hes noticeably cooler than your average person. can adjust his height to better suit his needs, so you dont have to worry about literally climbing him like a tree if you want to give him some affection... likes wrapping some of his tentacles around you during an embrace. not bone crushing, but not... well now its hard to explain, he seems odd with affection, not too sure how long or how tight to hold you... but hes learning! 7/10 love him, my tall wife

SPLENDORMAN:

very similar to slenderman in the regard that hes also very skinny and tall, though i do think hes just a teeeeeeny tiiiiiiny warmer than his brother! not by much but its a noticeable difference! loves lightly swinging you around before tugging you close to his chest, sometimes sways a little while holding you! holds you a little tighter than slenderman does. perhaps even nests his head on top of yours when you guys hug. honestly i can see him having a habit of just picking you up and carrying you around, platonic or romantic it doesnt matter, hes going to do it unless you express that you dont like it... 8/10 due to him being a little less cold (emotionally and physically)

EYELESS JACK:

now this ones ice cold, like youre going to need to bundle up if you want to cuddle up next to him since hes going to just snatch the heat out of you in a few minutes. admin personally hcs him to be on the shorter and thicker side, so theres that at least! very soft! generally not the type to seek out affection, though, so youre going to need to step up and initiate a lot of that stuff. not that he doesnt want it, he just doesnt really think about it all that much + he may or may not fear taking a bite out of you. shrugs... though i like to think that despite that, he can give some solid hugs! 6/10

LAUGHING JACK:

very warm, always seeking attention and affection from you so hugs are not in short supply. sometimes purrs when you guys hug, and similar to splendorman hes going to swing you around a bit.. though sometimes he gets too into it or too excited and it comes off more as thrashing you around. probably when hes feeling a little sillier than usual he pokes his cone nose into your cheek (gently). wraps his arms around you, like. totally around you since his arms can stretch and they dont really have.... bones... you know? probably sometimes hugs you from behind, typically after sneaking up behind you/poofing behind you from his smoke thing 8/10, would say 10/10 but i think he might accidentally crush you to death

MASKY/TIM:

not... very.. good at hugs. at most youre going to get one of those side hugs from him, at least when hes awake. sometimes when you two cuddle and he falls asleep, hes wrapping his arms around you and locking you in to his chest. normal body heat, maybe a little above average, but nothing too insane since hes still a human... hmm... doesnt really give those two armed hugs unless hes sleeping or you were just in danger. adrenaline and fear can do a lot to someone, you know... 6.5/10 masky gets a higher score than EJ since hes warmer

as for tim, hes a little more open to giving you affection, i think! while masky only really does it when you ask, i like to think that tim might be more likely to do it unprompted! likes resting his head/chin/jaw on your shoulder or head, depends on the height difference! 7/10

HOODIE/BRIAN:

i think in general i tend to type hoodie as a touch more open/social than masky.. masky tends to be a little... eh... he expresses stuff less than hoodie, at least in my take. shrugs. i do think hoodie likes to hug you from behind when youre doing something. very tall, personally hc him to be roughly 6 feet tall. neither buff nor skinny, have some pudge. generally very comfy, plus his hoodie is sometimes nice and soft, sometimes warm if you've managed to get him to wash it! likes swaying you a little while he looks over your shoulder to see what youre doing, only occasionally letting go to sign something to you.. 8/10

brian is more or less the same, but hes verbal so his hands are staying put on you. i also think hes a little bolder and more willing to just hold you whenever, let that man be affectionate with the reader! if this is romantic he likely puts his hands on your hips.. also 8/10

TICCI TOBY:

very affection starved, i think, but he also doesnt really initiate anything due to a deep rooted fear of rejection. so youre going to need to take the lead here! skin and bones, very cold since skinny people tend to be colder (at least in my experience with hugging!). when you guys do hug he does tend to hold you a little too tight. he doesnt mean anything malicious by it, its just that hes truly not used to hugging people and also subconsciously he doesnt want the hug to end, you know? 7/10 me thinks

BEN DROWNED:

very short very cold and... damp? i personally headcannon that the most of the time hes in a digital device, but on the rare chance hes in the real world... hes very cold and as previously mentioned damp. might also have a general electric buzz about him, too. kind of like holding a cold soggy plushie straight from a washing machine. not at all pleasant but he cant help it :( 4/10 the ghost boy does not make a good hugger there isnt much else to be said

JEFF THE KILLER:

very lanky, admin also headcannons him to be very tall. like 6'2. lanky fucker. probably a "where's my hug" person but not in the gross neckbeard way and more so mocking those kinds of people because the look you give him makes him lose his shit and cackle. his jacket kind of smells, youre going to have to get him to go wash it. it doesnt smell putrid or anything but it definitely needs a wash. what being a dude on the run after committing homicide does to a mf 5/10 only because he has a weird aura

PUPPETEER:

VERY lanky and VERY cold, kind of rigid thanks to his weird puppet joints. kind of like hugging a wooden puppet. i dont think thats a pleasant thing.... hm... is usually slightly levitating off of the ground so its even harder to get a hold of him, given that hes also already really tall as is... you have to make him stop hunching over so you can actually get in there. absolutely basks in the fact that youre giving your time and energy to him, kind of gets annoying with it sometimes but thats just him being an ass. 6/10 but only because i fuck with him sometimes when i remember him

73 yards is a bit difficult fit because the first half felt like a 10/10 episode. Then after kate (hiiii btw 🥰) runs away and the whole roger ap gwilliam thing it drifts a little bit off, but it doesnt matter. Still REALLY good. Dreading. Enjoyable. Like I ate this episode UP.

But then the ending just sort of happens. It reminds me of those "and it was all a dream 👐" stories.

It feels cut off (not enough time?), and like an unsatisfying resolution, because it explains nothing- actually, I think I have more questions now. And its not like midnight where not-knowing-anything is part of the charme.

This ending makes the dread I felt all episode feel 'unearned'. Midnights story doesnt rely on the mystery, so its fine left unsolved and amplifies the dread, even. But this whole story was 'set up" to have this mysterious woman, and she says things to people that make them run away even if theyre your family, your friends. And is Ruby the woman? Maybe? Its implied? But that actually makes me question what the woman said and did even more. What is the 73 yards about? Introducing the exact measurements like that and make her only visible from so far away feels super important. And the distance was only *one* thing that was left totally unexplained. If it was just that? Who cares. The fairy circle? Id be more concerned if they explained that one than if they didnt. But still. What made them run away? What is old-woman-possibly-ruby's connection to the fairy circle? And other stuff, but who cares. Still.

And i think what really bugs me is the fact the ending presents itself as if it WERE a solution.

It doesnt feel like it acknowledges its almost a sort of deus ex machina moment. It doesnt acknowledge the fact it isnt a solution at all. In midnight, they acknowledge no one knows what the heck that was. And listen both wraps up most of the mystery while keeping it sort of open in other regards. Heaven sent basically wraps everything up.

But 73 yards? Nada. And I absolutely HATE that because I genuinely would LOVE for this episode to be one of my all-time favourites. I love the camera work, the score is really good, and most of the episode is really captivating, but the ending makes all of this dread feel so unearned that it 'overshadows' the great episode 73 yards starts of as.

I've been a fan of your works for...a while and am down on my knees for Arlecchino

But I have a slight problem. I've also started falling for Mavuika and the fact that they both are in 5.3 banners is extremely frustrating. So now I have to choose between Arky or Mavuika. I was thinking about going with Arlecchino as Mavuika will probably have a rerun. What do you think I should do?-

ooooh idk if I‘m the right person for that question because I‘m a meta NERD. i also might be biased since I have Arle on C6 (NO I AM NOT A WHALE), but I‘ll try sharing my opinion on the current situation you are in.

starting with Arle, it is her second banner and I don‘t think she will have second rerun before 6.0. she’s even at low investment a very good damage dealer and by low investment i mean LOW investment. literally give her white tassel and 4p gladiator and throw her in a team with xingqiu, bennett and sucrose and that‘s it. but she also scores in high versatility and doesn’t have to rely on vaporize, melt etc at all. you can put her in hundreds of combinations and she‘d still deal massive damage event at c0. she is just that girl. i am just waiting for a bond of life support at this point.

now about mavuika, it is always a bit difficult for me to rate a characters gameplay without having actual in game comparisons, so I‘ll base matters off of her kit. mavuika is a damage dealer than can be used as either an off-field or on-field unit. her elemental skill manifests a ring that follows the active character around and deals nightsoul-aligned pyro damage at a set interval of two seconds. a fairly good pyro application if you are asking me, while xiangling does an equal good job but the focus of her kit is actually her ultimate so let us move over to that.

mavuika‘s burst is the first burst in the entire game that doesnt use energy like every other to charge up, it uses „fighting spirit“. fighting spirit has a limit of 200 and mavuika can trigger it once it reaches 100 fighting spirit. but to get out the highest damage from her, you want to use her burst with full fighting spirits (her damage seems to be diabolically high btw). now the main problem for me arises here: to gather fighting spirit faster, you will need natlan characters. you can also gather them via using normal attacks with party members but the gain is so LOW, without xilonen it‘s not a viable option imo. but again, there is still the option of using her as a sub dps in a large variety of teams and she will probably get more team options in the future so not all hope is lost.

Now this was just my meta view on the situation! mavuika will get a rerun on before august either way so if you skip her for arle and regret it later on- don‘t be sad! at the end of the day they are both wonderfully written characters and you should pull for whatever characters speaks to you more, maybe you are lucky and can manage to even pull them both! i hope i could help anon and tysm for enjoying my works❤️

That’s an autistic boy if i ever did see one. Tom is me i am tom. The no shoes thing is definitely a sensory issue, i like to think its the socks more than its the shoes, likely the seams around the toes. I feel like if tom is forced to wear socks and shoes he’s got very specific sensory needs. Absolutely no ankle socks, those were sent by the government to make your ankles feel like they’re being strangled by their oppressive regime, only gym socks pulled up as far as they can physically stretch with sneakers that are tied so tight he takes them off and there’s an indent of the laces on his foot and absolutely zero circulation from the ankle down

Tom runs a very successful horror blog, he talks about behind the scenes info for his favourite movies and also provides ratings of movies both new and old. It’s really funny to watch him in the cinema because he sits with a little norepad and makes notes the whole time so he can come up with a decicive score on the blog. He spends a lot of time in the movies, its where most of the money he threatens out of other students ends up. He goes to watch movies a minimum of 5 times to make sure he didn’t miss any details or lose any plot points that might bump up his initial scores. He has a secret spreadsheet and everything, its insane commitment, but special interest is gonna special interest, am i right gamers?

A very very good student when he applies himself, especially as a creative writer, if you look past all the blood, gore, and general slasher rapiness in his works you can definitely see all the signs of a promising novelist or screenwriter. In the poetry department, he’s not so stellar. Tom is still of the mindset that all poems must rhyme and are generally quite superficial and pointless pieces of writing. And they’re completely separate to all the private free form stuff he writes in his journal from time to time. Those aren’t poems at all they’re just… succinct vents

Tom is also a greatly talented drummer, the kid has rhythm all the way up to his eyeballs, and if he wasn’t so scared i think he’d be a great asset to bullworth’s marching band. He borrows a drum kit Russel keeps in his garage and practices using karaoke tracks of songs he illegally torrented onto his iPod, no sheet music, just vibes.

Tom’s face bruise is actually part bruise and port wine stain birthmark, hence why it stays that lovely purple hue forever. The redness in his eye is from repeated blows to the head from both friends and foes but the purple skin around his eye is (mostly) just birthmark

The rest of his bruises are actually just from minor injuries. I think tom has elhers danos syndrome (EDS) so the kid bruises like a peach. Minor bumps from passersby in the busy halls of bullworth leave him looking like he was in a full on beat down. That’s not to say that he’s not often in huge scuffles because he absolutely is, he’s just a little more physically delicate than the other bullies

Tom has the hots for angie (at least in my save he does) so he tries to act like a sweetheart whenever he’s around her. He knows that she knows he’s a bully but i think tom really wants to show her that he’s more than that, he’s better than that. Tom doesnt even like being a bully all that much, it’s just the hard facts of life at bullworth that you’re either in or out, and god knows he wouldn’t last a day if he was out.

How i made xenos nails!!

Materials

-worbla

-2mm eva foam

-scissors

-heat gun

-soldering iron (technically optional but helps A LOT)

-gesso (i used regular gesso, but if you can id buy heavy body gesso)

-P400+P600 sand paper

-acyrlic paint (just silver is ok, but black will help)

-white gloves

-hot glue

PART 1- forming the base

This part is VERY hard to explain so hopefully the diagram helps- ill explain every step here

Finger tips

1. Cut out a piece of worbla thats double the length of the finger tip you want + a little extra.

2. Heat it slightly and fold that piece of worbla in half around your finger.

3. Form it slightly around your finger, leaving a little extra space for the glove material, then cut it out with good scissors. (NOTE- if you try to form it on your finger while wearing gloves, the worbla MAY stick to the gloves. Id recommend just doing it on your bare finger)

4. Heat it up again until its very soft and round out the shape, making sure the sides stick together. If its too small when you test fit it around the glove, try to push out the walls a bit more.

Nails

Watch this video before starting this part-

1. Find a good length for your nails- mine are approx. 3 inches. Make a template and then cut the shape out of eva foam.

2. Cut out TWO pieces of worbla a little bigger then the nail strip and heat one up, sticky side up (the sticky side is shiny). Put the eva foam strip in the middle. Heat up the second piece of worbla and put it on top, sandwiching the eva foam.

3. Score all around the eva strip then cut AS CLOSE as possible to the edge.

Attaching the pieces

1. Heat up the finger tip and half of the nail. Attach the nail to the finger tip while wearing it to make sure it doesnt cave in. Use a picture from the manga as reference while doing this part

2. Once again, using a manga reference, use scrap worbla to fill out the sides and smooth everything down. This is the part where you can use a soldering iron to smooth everything out- be careful though, because you can easily burn the worbla.

2.5. I forgot to make a diagram but dont forget to curve the nails! I used a little metal dome to get a consistent curve for all of them.

3. Make little worbla balls, flatten them with something flat, then attach them to the nails while still hot.

Now repeat ALL these steps for all 10 nails! Yay!

PART 2- priming

For priming i used regular gesso because I was impatient, but if you have plenty of time I recommend heavy body gesso. It took me 12 layers to get everything decently smooth, but if you used heavy body it would probably take 3-5 layers.

I also used floral foam, craft sticks, and sticky tack for my painting setup- if you can think of a better method without sticky tack id recommend trying something else- just because i had to pick out the sticky tack with tweezers, and it took forever lol

Two things to note about gesso-

1. It doesnt self level so you need to sand it smooth

2. DO NOT DRY SAND!! Always wet sand gesso

My exact steps were this-

4 layers of gesso -> sand with P400 -> 4 layers of gesso -> sand with P400 -> 4 layers of gesso -> sand with P600

This part is very time consuming if you use regular gesso, but its definitely worth it for the smooth finish.

PART 3- painting

Before adding silver, I threw down a quick matte black layer. It tends to make metals look much better and it wont take long to dry, so I highly recommend it.

For the silver, i used decoart extreme sheen in silver, which i highly recommend. Relatively cheap and can be found in any craft store

Id also recommend having all your brush strokes go vertically if you can- it looks much cleaner.

PART 4 (final part)- attachment

I used a pair of white gloves i bought a while back at spirit halloween, but you can make them or buy them- doesnt matter as long as you like them.

This part is kinda dumb but I genuinely dont know if theres a better method… i put hot glue in the nails, let it cool for a couple of seconds, then put them ON MY FINGERS while wearing the gloves. It gets you the best fit possible but also burns a little so watch out.

This is dedicated to the best teacher ive ever met in my life.

He was our class in-charge in 10th standard and taught us english grammar, literally the most happy, joyous chill person i had ever met. Always smiling. Always. Even his wife who taught us biology was our class in-charge in 8th grade, she was the sweetest woman ive ever met.

They both would always smile and talk, they loved my trio, Because in 10th grade we were put in a class of studious students (A section) bcs of our previous grades. And everyone would just be fixated on the books, (it is good but even during lunch time, they would ignore food and study which us unhealthy) and my trio was shameless, but all teachers loved us, because of our jolly nature too i guess, we were the sun of the class (except 2-3 others)

And our class in-charge would love to talk to us, make jokes with us, tell us to not worry about our grades and tell that he tells his daughter the same, he would talk that how he will build a house in his hometown after retiring. Never had i seen a frown on his face. I still can visualize this smiling face. Not only that, he cared about us.

I remember during my pre boards, there were continuous exams and i slept very less and got eye bags and visible changes, And he decided to tell me remedies how to cure this and manage stress and schedule, he told that “it doesnt matter how much you score in pre boards, boards is what matters, so just keep preparing for boards, not destroying yourself, so keep chill and just revise the topics, you’ll only get these questions to practice for boards, marks dont matter here.”

Istg he was so good, And his wife too. Actually the only male teacher i respect this much. The one who treated us like daughters. Such a genius guy. absolute goat. I hope to meet him and his wife before i leave to anywhere else for college.

i think the majority of people who like this stuff have pulled it into their normie sphere, rather than leant into the lore. what makes a nerd a nerd? is it the content you like itself, or the way you engage with it? i'd argue the latter.

nerds are teased because they're passionate about something, doesnt matter what it is. sci fi and fantasy i think is a poster child of nerdery mainly because it involves escapism and a detachment from reality, which is frequently considered childish, as if you're not facing your responsibilities and running away from problems. this is compared to something 'tough' like sports (but even then, it's only a few certain sports considered macho! think how nerdy something like luge or curling is! and anyway, big sports like soccer and football are full of grown ass men rolling around in the grass in pain at any given opportunity lmao.)

inner child pop psychology became mainstream in the 80s and 90s and people embraced a simpler nostalgic ideal. you see it in the 1950s-inspired teen movies that were made in the 80s (Grease, American Graffiti, even some John Hughes), so I think Hollywood sort of twisted this nerdy content to make it mainstream palatable, for lots of reasons...

i mean, if you think of comic books, originally they were aimed at like 12 year old boys in the 60s or something. its hardly content for adults, and it was made darker into the 2000s. Remember how fresh the dark knight was when it came out? But at its core, it's still IP originally created for kids.

And there's a noticeable infantilisation of art and media for adults today. I whinge about this a lot because it connects to spicy byler and the dearth of erotic cinema since the 90s, which leads into puritanism and all the nonsense we have to deal with here. There's actually interesting debate on this topic in academic circles, because in history, infantilisation of the public has often preceded fascism - basically, get grown ass people to have more and more childish interests and desires, and eventually they start to believe in their own powerlessness, where they wait for someone else to come and be an adult, to save them or take control. an obsession with superhero movies sounds pretty familiar to that on a cultural level, don't you think?

so maybe the MCU -> trump/putin pipeline is real lmao.

when i think of the things and genres of film/books/music/art i love, it ranges to so many types that I only just felt like it made sense as an adult. as a teen, i couldnt find a place anywhere cos i liked a mix of everything. I love lotr, i could probs talk about it for hours as a cinematic score / filmmaking nerd, but I'm definitely not someone who would ever dress up as an elf. so where do i fit? what kind of nerd am i, if at all?

This is the big question I posed when thinking about this topic, and here's a worthy answer: "what makes a nerd a nerd? is it the content you like itself, or the way you engage with it? i'd argue the latter. nerds are teased because they're passionate about something, doesnt matter what it is."

So many good points here. In particular -the infantilisation of art and media for adults. Huge example, important subject. It's the dumbing down of everything, it's catering to the lowest common viewpoint. It's not trusting an audience to formulate their own emotion or regulate an emotional response. See, not letting anything be sincere. Isn't that something we talk about often around here - sincerity. That's something pretty relevant to nerd culture. Sure, some may be overly passionate, too dedicated, obsessive, etc. about their interests - but are these such huge crimes? The love of something is sincere, unashamed.

Back to the other root issues with so much media. It's not letting the story be a story and hoping it resonates with someone. Anyone. To entertain, yes, but to say something. When art tries to cater to everyone - it loses itself. There are times and places for that sort of thing, not everything needs to be deeply deeply meaningful - but when too much of everything is catered to this mindset, what's left?

See one big example that might be hard to stomach - "basically, get grown ass people to have more and more childish interests and desires, and eventually they start to believe in their own powerlessness, where they wait for someone else to come and be an adult, to save them or take control." You know what comes to mind? Disney adults. I'm talking those conservative-aligned vlogger style obsessives who worship the house of mouse and build entire identities around The Brand. To the untrained eye - some might lump them in with nerd culture. And these people would be wrong. It's the idealization of childhood and fear of growing up and pledging yourself to corporation in a way that happiness is a commodity and commercial and it's as insincere as an obsession can get. I'm not lumping in every Disney fan and theme park lover - no, don't be stubborn. I like a lot of Disney-made things myself. You know what I mean by this. And it's part of what our society is pushing, see points in this ask.

Anyway - I think the main thing with "nerd culture" is... what does it mean to you? It's such a silly word and we don't really need to categorize ourselves so much. Humans in present day society are obsessed with boxing ourselves in and creating little groups and names for things that fit us and we can list as easily recognizable attributes for out identities. Some - important, useful, just for navigating the world. Other - completely arbitrary. Why do I care to call myself a nerd? Because despite wherever I've been in life, my personal passion and way I approach my personal interests have felt different from my peers and friends in a way that did feel othering. I'm the type of nerd who has always used my interests as escapism and I'm ok with that, and with the term as identifier. Depends on what an individual feels is right, though of course, it's a much different conversation when with ill intent someone calls you a "fucking nerd" - but that's the thing with adjectives and human identifiers alike: anything personal can be turned into an insult.
