your dub propaganda posts have definitely got me curious about it, but how close would you say the translation of the dub is to the original japanese? like if the changes between languages are at ghost stories levels or not? i don't mind some adlibing and stuff like that, but i also don't want original language's humor to be completely lost by watching it in english if that makes sense.
well it's not going to capture the japanese humor style because it's in english lol. frankly i dont think comedy dubs can be 100% faithful to the source language in the first place because that makes them unfunny in their original language lol but it's funny in english! a lot of the humor is good lateral equivalents which is the point of a localization. like i cant say it exemplifies the tsukkomi/boke humor bc that's not an english language concept but i can say that choro gets snappy one-liners!
i guess the main qualm w the dub ppl have is it doesnt take as much care with giving the characterizations nuance or plausible depth, which the jp direction is very good with. for example a lot of people dont like how jyushi feels a lot Simply Stupid in the dub when in the jp there's an intentional nuance in his writing that lets people read deeper into it. and sure there's a small handful of line localizations that i think are unforgivable lol. im personally ok w prioritizing the punchline first though
anyways i watched the dub first and it was suitably funny since it got me into the franchise! it's a 9/10 dub i sorely miss that s3 didnt get one. if you have been into ososan for years you'll probably be a lot more picky than i was going in blind though
